Steelers fight back from fourth-quarter deficit to beat Rams

0

Jaylen Warren and Najee Harris rushed for touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and the Pittsburgh Steelers awoke from a quiet offensive day just in time for a 24-17 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

Kenny Pickett passed for 230 yards and ran for another score for the Steelers (4-2), who had just 110 yards in the first three quarters at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Pittsburgh’s only early touchdown came after T.J. Watt intercepted Matthew Stafford’s first pass of the second half and returned it inside the Los Angeles 10, setting up Pickett’s TD sneak.

Much-maligned coordinator Matt Canada’s offense finally found some holes in the Los Angeles (3-4) defense in the fourth quarter, racking up three long drives that culminated in two TDs and the chance to run out the clock. George Pickens made four of his five receptions for 107 yards in the second half.

Pickett got a generous spot on a sneak to convert a 4th-and-1 at the two-minute warning, allowing Pittsburgh to secure the franchise’s first win over the Rams in Los Angeles.

Head coach Sean McVay couldn’t challenge the questionable spot because the Rams were out of timeouts, and the play occurred just outside the two-minute window that would have resulted in a booth review.

Stafford passed for 231 yards and hit Tutu Atwell for a 31-yard touchdown right before halftime for Los Angeles, which dropped to 1-3 at home.

Rookie sensation Puka Nacua had eight catches for 154 yards, but the Rams struggled for consistent drives after halftime, scoring no points on their final three drives and managing only 20 yards in the fourth quarter. Brett Maher also missed two long field-goal attempts and an extra point.

Darrell Henderson rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown in his season debut for Los Angeles while Royce Freeman had 66 yards. Henderson was released after 3 1/2 seasons with the Rams last November, and the Super Bowl winner was out of the league this fall until L.A. re-signed him last week when its top two running backs went down with injuries late in a win over Arizona.

Both offenses struggled for sustained possession in the first half until Los Angeles mounted an 88-yard drive shortly before halftime, capped by the long TD catch by Atwell, who appeared to cut in front of a pass intended for Cooper Kupp from a scrambling Stafford.

Pittsburgh managed just 91 yards of offense in the first half and failed to convert a third down.

Watt didn’t have a tackle in the first half, but the star pass rusher slipped into coverage to open the second half and made his seventh career interception on a pass meant for Kupp, returning it a career-long 24 yards. Pickett scored three plays later.

Los Angeles responded adeptly with a 75-yard drive that included an exceptional, 32-yard toe-tap catch by Nacua and a 1-yard TD run by Henderson.

Pittsburgh tied it with 13:49 to play when Diontae Johnson’s 39-yard catch set up Warren’s 13-yard scoring run.

Travis Kelce’s big day with Taylor Swift in attendance helps Chiefs to huge win over Chargers

0

When the superstars are in the seats, the superstars on the field have to show up – and that’s exactly what Travis Kelce did.

With rumored girlfriend Taylor Swift yet again in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium, Kelce made Swifties, his fantasy owners and Chiefs fans all happy campers with his dominance on the gridiron in the Kansas City Chiefs‘ 31-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

This one started slow as both teams put up three points each in the first quarter. But in the second, they exploded for a combined five touchdowns.

Patrick Mahomes found Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a 46-yard score to put Kansas City up 10-3, but Joshua Kelley answered with a 49-yard rushing touchdown to tie it up. It took the Chiefs just four plays to score again, though, following a 53-yard catch-and-run by Kelce, Mahomes hit Rashee Rice for a six-yard touchdown.

But the Chargers had practically a carbon copy of that drive. Justin Herbert found Joshua Palmer for 60 yards and then hit Gerald Everett for a seven-yard touchdown to tie it again.

However, just before the half ended, Kelce scored on a shuffle pass, giving Kansas City a 24-17 lead.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third, but late in the fourth, Isiah Pacheco added insurance with an eight-yard receiving touchdown to make it a two-touchdown game. Herbert threw a late interception, but the Chiefs kneed the clock out to clinch the victory.

Kelce finished with 12 catches for 179 yards, both season highs. He was 12 yards short of a career-high, and he has 303 yards in his last two contests.

Mahomes threw for a season-high 424 yards, completing 32 of his 42 passes for four touchdowns. Ten different Chiefs caught a pass from the two-time MVP.

Swift made the trip, her fourth Chiefs game in the last five weeks, after hanging out with former quarterback Bernie Kosar.

It’s Kansas City’s sixth win in a row after losing the season opener, without Kelce, to the Detroit Lions. Los Angeles moved to 2-4.

Thai crypto investors turn to tarot cards, divine signals to predict market

0

Crypto and stock investors have always found interesting and sometimes bizarre ways to “predict” the market’s ebbs and flows.

Some have suggested that our unconscious minds can predict the stock market through “precognitive dreaming,” while others have recently been turning to the advice of artificial intelligence chatbots.

However, in Thailand, there appears to be a growing group of investors turning to divine powers and astrology to predict market movements, including crypto — as recently highlighted in a r/cryptocurrency thread on Reddit.

One astrologist, who goes by “Pimfah,” has a 160,000-strong Facebook group where members ask for and send tarot card readings — some ask for help on what their readings mean for the crypto market.

Another self-proclaimed fortune teller, Ajarn Ton, has a YouTube channel with nearly 26,000 subscribers where he’s uploaded hundreds of videos attempting to predict the price of various cryptocurrencies using astrology.

Ton’s most recent focus is predicting that Terraform Labs’ collapsed crypto Terra Luna Classic (LUNC) will see a surge of nearly 50,000% — saying it could hit $0.029.

So far, however, it’s trading at less than $0.000055.

Occasionally, these predictions turn out to be somewhat accurate.

High-profile fortune teller, Mor Plai, made local headlines earlier this year for her August 2022 prediction of a crypto market recovery starting that November — which turned out to be somewhat accurate, ignoring the crypto retrench around FTX’s collapse.

“Color me skeptical”

Commenters on the Reddit post were largely doubtful about the so-called method of prediction.

“Put out enough vague predictions, and you gotta be right eventually,” one Redditor commented.

“If a hamster can perform better than most adults I don’t see why we shouldn’t try astrology,” another joked.

However, while spiritual beliefs would likely attract skeptics in the West, it is not considered out of the ordinary in Buddhist-majority Thailand.

A September Pew Research report said just over 80% of surveyed Thais believe in God, deities or spirits and nearly half believed spells, curses or other magic influenced people’s lives.

Even in parts of the Western world, self-described astrologers have also been using signals from the stars to divine price movements in crypto.

During the 2021 crypto bull market, the United States-born TikTok astrologer Maren Altman gained a following of millions for her astrology-backed Bitcoin price predictions.

Altman told Magazine in January she was “familiar with financial astrology, so it just made sense to apply it to cryptocurrency.”

Didi Taihuttu, a Dutch-born Bitcoiner and “Bitcoin family” patriarch — who sold all their assets in 2017 and lived off Bitcoin since — has a homebrew market indicator that considers moon cycles alongside directional trading data to flag buy and sell opportunities for Bitcoin.

One Redditor postulated that there could be an indirect relation between astrology and prices, as belief in it could cause traders to “act accordingly” — and thus cause a shift in prices in itself through a self-fulfilling prophecy.

As for what lies in store for Bitcoin in the near future, the pseudonymous crypto-focused astrologer “Crypto Damus” claimed in an Oct. 18 X (Twitter) post:

“Mars is lining up to make a favorable sextile to [Bitcoin] natal Mars over the next several days, (with Mercury cazimi),” which is assumedly positive as they claim it shows strength and will “pump the market.”

However, the “transit of Mars in Scorpio generally hasn’t been that good for BTC” they said — whatever that means.
