Bitmain allegedly fired staff after salary complaints

Bitcoin application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) mining manufacturer Bitmain has allegedly fired three of its employees for speaking to the media regarding the withholding of salary payments by their employer.

According to local news reports on Oct. 17, citing an alleged internal Bitmain memo, the company accused three staff members of breaching various clauses in their employment contracts for sharing their remuneration on social media platforms. The note reads:

“The EMT [Executive Management Team] has decided: (1) Employee Li of product operations and circuit development, is to be fired immediately and blacklisted. (2) Employee Xie of product operations and circuit development, is to be fired immediately and blacklisted. (3) Employee Ding, administrative intern at strategic development PMT, is to be fired immediately and blacklisted. The intern’s post-secondary institution shall also be informed of the incident.”

“In addition, the company reserves the right to pursue legal action against the individuals above,” Bitmain allegedly wrote. “Without authorization by the company, nothing can be said, nothing can be given [to outsiders!]”

On Oct. 9, Cointelegraph reported that Bitmain allegedly paused September salary payments for its staff members as the company “has yet to achieve a net positive cash flow, especially in the orders of [new] ASICs.” In addition, employees allegedly face a 50% cut to their base salary, with all bonuses and incentives being removed.

Founded in Beijing, China in 2013, Bitmain is one of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining ASIC manufacturers, with an estimated 70% market share during the previous bull market that ended in 2021. The firm’s Antminer ASIC series currently leads the industry in terms of hash rate computations for mining Bitcoin. Over the past year, several Bitcoin mining operators have gone bankrupt as the price of Bitcoin plunged while electricity costs surged.

Hong Kong investors spooked by JPEX scandal

Despite efforts to regulate the sector, it appears that some Hong Kong residents have lost their confidence in crypto after the largest Ponzi scheme in the city’s history, the $175 million JPEX crypto exchange scandal, unfolded last month.

According to a new study published by the HKUST Business School Central on Oct. 17, 41% of Hong Kong residents are no longer interested in holding crypto assets, a sharp rise of 12% compared to before the JPEX incident. The survey featured 7,900 respondents and was conducted between April and October.

The study also revealed that 84% of Hong Kongers have heard of crypto, with 27% of respondents claiming they either hold digital assets now or were previously crypto investors. For those investing in crypto, over 80% said they would not invest over 50,000 Hong Kong dollars ($6,390) into the sector. Interestingly, 57% of respondents said they understood that crypto exchanges must obtain a license before operating in Hong Kong, an increase of 15% compared to before the JPEX scandal unraveled.

Wu Huang, a professor at HKUST Business School Central, commented:

“We hope that the results of this survey can provide industry stakeholders with more perspectives to help build a sound virtual asset industry. As virtual assets play an increasingly important role in the digital economy, there is a need to strengthen education efforts to make the public better Understand the risks and potential of this emerging field.”

Last month, JPEX staff fled their corporate booth at Singapore’s Token2049 event after the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission issued a warning regarding the exchange’s unregulated activities. Subsequently, Hong Kong police arrested more than 10 corporate executives and influencers connected to the exchange on charges of fraud. The JPEX scandal has since grown to over 2,300 victims, with losses estimated at $175 million. The exchange was unlicensed at the time of the incident.

“Factually inaccurate” news report wipes out $54 million in market cap

When it comes to reporting, Cointelegraph has seen some blunders over the years. That said, fake news is a problem across the industry.

On Oct. 16, Bloomberg reported that BC Technology Group, owner of licensed Hong Kong crypto exchange OSL, is contemplating the sale of the latter for 1 billion Hong Kong dollars ($128 million).

On Oct. 17, BC Technology Group issued a clarification stating: “The Board wishes to clarify that the contents and statements in the [Bloomberg] Article are factually inaccurate and highly misleading” and that it was not contemplating a sale of OSL.

Unfortunately, investors who bought BC Technology stock based on the divestiture euphoria were not so happy. After publishing the clarification statement, shares of BC Technology tanked 22% during the trading day, wiping off $54 million in market capitalization. “Shareholders of the Company and potential investors are advised to exercise caution when dealing in the shares of the Company,” management wrote.

Bitget’s new crypto credit card

Joining the likes of its peers, cryptocurrency exchange Bitget is launching its own crypto-fiat credit card. According to an Oct. 16 announcement during the Future Blockchain Summit in Dubai, the Bitget Card, issued by Visa and backed by digital assets in users’ accounts and wallets, will be denominated in U.S. dollars and will be accepted in over 180 countries.

Although many exchanges have rolled out their own crypto debit or credit cards, some have seen pushback from payment processors. On Aug. 25, Mastercard said it would end its cryptocurrency card partnership with Binance in Latin America. Although the firm did not cite a specific reason, experts have pointed to Binance’s recent regulatory scrutiny as the underlying cause.

Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen on two wild NLCS home wins: ‘I’m glad we could defend the pool’

0

After dropping the first two games of the National League Championship Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks pulled off back-to-back thrilling comeback victories to even up the best-of-seven series.

The first couple of games were played at the Philadelphia Phillies‘ home ballpark, but the series shifted to Chase Field for Games 3 and 4. Since Philadelphia entered Game 3 with a 2-0 series lead, they could have advanced to the World Series if they had won two games at the D-Backs’ home stadium.

If the Phillies had pulled off the road wins, the team planned to celebrate by jumping into the outfield pool. “If we take two here against Arizona, we’ll be bee-lining it for the water,” Phillies backup catcher Garrett Stubbs said.

The Diamondbacks appeared to have caught wind of Stubbs’ comments, which seemed to provide the team with some extra motivation to defend their home pool.

“I’m glad we could defend the pool. You don’t love when teams can jump in your pool. That means they did something that we didn’t get to do,” Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

ASTROS’ DUSTY BAKER ON BRYAN ABREU’S EJECTION: ‘I AIN’T BEEN THAT MAD IN A LONG TIME’

D-back manager Torey Lovullo said his team plays with a “chip on their shoulder.”

“This team is extremely motivated,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said on Friday.

“I know that guys are going to step on it, stand on it, find a way to get it done. I think they take things personal. They have a chip on their shoulder. I know their backup catcher made a statement about sprinting towards the pool or making a bee-line to the pool. So I think they’re wearing that a little bit, and they’re motivated by that externally, and they’re motivated to be as good as they possibly can internally.”

The Phillies appeared to be heading towards a commanding 3-1 lead on Friday night, but the D-backs had other plans. Phillies manager Robert Thomson elected to bring closer Craig Kimbrel into game in the 8th inning, and Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas crushed a two-run homer to tie the game.

University of Utah gymnast retires amid alleged ‘verbal and emotional abuse’ from coach

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

A member of the University of Utah women’s gymnastics team announced her retirement from the sport and withdrawal from the school on Friday, citing “verbal and emotional abuse” from head coach Tom Farden and being “completely dismissed” by the athletic department when she tried to report it.

Kara Eaker, a two-time gold medalist at the World Championships and alternate for the 2020 Olympics, said she has recently contemplated suicide and self-harm and was recently diagnosed with “severe anxiety and depression” while also suffering from “panic attacks, PTSD, and night terrors.”

“I accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Utah because I truly believed the school was a place where I could contribute to the community, be a strong asset to the gymnastics team, and be free to develop myself and future career,” Eaker wrote in an Instagram post.

“For two years, while training with the Utah Gymnastics team, I was a victim of verbal and emotional abuse. As a result, my physical, mental and emotional health has rapidly declined. . . .

“During my recruiting process, I was promised a ‘family’ within this program and a ‘sisterhood’ with my teammates, who would accept me, care for me, and support me. But instead, after I entered as a freshman, I was heartbroken to find the opposite in that I was training in an unhealthy, unsafe, and toxic environment.”

Eaker wrote that instead of being constructively critiqued, she was ridiculed “to the point of tears in front of the whole team.”

“I was scared to death by the loud and angry outbursts from the coach, ‘What the hell is wrong with you!’ What the f-ck are you doing!’ ‘You better get your sh-t together!’ and ‘Pull your head out of your ass!’” she wrote.

“The words are so intense and hurtful that it feels like a knife that’s stabbed so deep in my body that there’s no way to pull it out.”

Eaker added that even texts from the coach “caused a panic attack.” She said she is speaking out “for all the women who can’t because they are mentally debilitated and paralyzed by fear.”

“I, too, find myself frozen in moments when fear takes over. But I can no longer stand by while perpetrators are still allowed in sports and are causing young girls and women to suffer,” she wrote.

An investigation was recently completed into Farden and the culture of the women’s gymnastics program, which found that Farden “did not engage in any severe, pervasive or egregious acts of emotional or verbal abuse of student-athletes,” nor did he “engage in any acts of physical abuse, emotional abuse or harassment.” However, it was found he did make “personally degrading comments.”

“Despite these findings, we note that a majority of student-athletes interviewed, two-thirds of the student-athletes who participated on the 2022-23 Women’s Gymnastics Team, and all but one current or former staff member affiliated with the Women’s Gymnastics Program described Coach Farden as a caring, passionate coach and did not report any concerns related to the treatment of student-athletes,” the university said in their investigation.

Eaker called the investigation report “incomplete at best,” saying it has no credibility, because it “omits crucial evidence and information.”

The University of Utah did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

UCF receiver blows kiss to Oklahoma sideline while running for 86-yard touchdown

0

Javon Baker was feeling himself against the fifth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners.

The UCF wide receiver didn’t care one bit about how his Knights were huge underdogs going into Norman on Saturday, and he let the Sooners know as such.

On 2nd and 10 from their own 14-yard line, Baker caught a pass from John Rhys Plumlee at the 40 with no one around him, so he was able to take it to the house for an 86-yard score and give UCF a 17-14 lead.

But mid-run, he channeled his inner Tyreek Hill by looking over to the Sooners sideline on his left and blew them a kiss.

Baker was promptly called for unsportsmanlike conduct, but the taunt didn’t exactly fire up the Sooners immediately.

Oklahoma were able to tie the game as the half ended with a field goal, but they opened up the second half with an interception, and UCF kicked two field goals, shutting out the Sooners in the third quarter.

Oklahoma took the lead, though, in the fourth, and after forcing a UCF punt, they extended their lead with another touchdown to go up 31-23 with 3:13 to go.

However, the Knights drove write down the field, and Rhys Plumlee found Baker for another score. But the Knights’ trick play on the two-point conversion failed, so Oklahoma held on for a 31-29 victory.

Baker finished with five receptions, two of them scores, for 134 yards, four yards of tying a career-high.

The Sooners moved to 7-0 on the season, surpassing their win total from last year, while UCF fell to 3-4, with all of their losses coming in conference play.

Bitcoin core developer steps back from Lightning Network over “hard dilemma”

0

247da51a 02d5 439f b5db 3fac951f4143

Security researcher and developer Antoine Riard is stepping down from the Lightning Network’s development, citing security issues and fundamental challenges to the Bitcoin ecosystem.

According to a thread on the Linux Foundation’s public mailing list, Riard believes the Bitcoin community faces a “hard dilemma” as a new class of replacement cycling attacks puts Lightning in a “perilous position.”

The Lightning Network is the second-layer solution built over the Bitcoin blockchain. It is designed to improve the scalability and efficiency of Bitcoin transactions by enabling off-chain, peer-to-peer transactions.

Through the Lightning Network, users can open payment channels, conduct multiple transactions off-chain, and settle the final result on the Bitcoin blockchain. The replacement cycling attack targets these payment channels. It is a new type of attack that allows the attacker to steal funds from a channel participant by exploiting inconsistencies between individual mempools. According to Riard:

“I think this new class of replacement cycling attacks puts lightning in a very perilous position, where only a sustainable fix can happen at the base-layer, e.g adding a memory-intensive history of all-seen transactions or some consensus upgrade. Deployed mitigations are worth something in face of simple attacks, though I don’t think they’re stopping advanced attackers as said in the first full disclosure mail.”

Riard also noted that addressing the new type of attack may require changes to the underlying Bitcoin network:

“Those types of changes are the ones necessitating the utmost transparency and buy-in of the community as a whole, as we’re altering the full-nodes processing requirements or the security architecture of the decentralized bitcoin ecosystem in its integrality.”

Lightning developers grapple with challenges, including criticisms surrounding the network’s complexity and the demands placed on user experience. Since its inception in 2018, the layer-2 network has gained popularity, with a total value locked reaching $159.5 million at the time of writing, according to data from DefiLlama. However, this figure is still very modest when compared to Bitcoin’s $587 billion market capitalization.

Riard plans to focus now on Bitcoin core development, but warned about upcoming challenges for the major cryptocurrency ecosystem:

“On the other hand fully explaining why such changes would be warranted for the sake of lightning and for designing them well, we might need to lay out in complete state practical and critical attacks on a ~5 355 public BTC ecosystem. Hard dilemma. There might be a lesson in terms of bitcoin protocol deployment […]”
