Tom Brady pokes fun at Peyton Manning’s bad flight story as rivalry continues

0

When Peyton Manning revealed a recent flight debacle on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady couldn’t hold back making a comment on social media that shows their rivalry is still very much alive after they both retired.

Manning told McAfee and his gang about a recent Delta flight during which he was freezing cold in the back of the plane. And in Brady’s defense, Manning brought Brady’s name up first.

“I was on a Delta flight the other night,” Manning said. “I was in 36F. Has Tom sat in 36F on a Delta flight?”

Manning went on to explain how cold he got sitting in the exit row.

“They put me in an exit row, Pat, which was great because of the legroom,” Manning said. “But I swear the door was open. I was cold as I’ve ever been. I’ve played some cold-weather games. I’ve been in Green Bay, played in New England.”

That’s when Brady stepped in on X.

TOM BRADY SOUNDS OFF ON CONTROVERSIAL GIANTS-BILLS ENDING

“I’m sure the temperature was perfect,” Brady wrote with a video from the show. “Peyton could never handle life outside the dome…”

Manning played 13 of his 17 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, and McAfee was a teammate as the team’s punter. Their home games were at Lucas Oil Stadium, an indoor stadium. Some critics have argued Manning could never perform outside a dome, especially during cold-weather months.

Manning and Brady faced each other 17 times in their careers with Brady winning 11 of the matchups.

It was just a playful jab between two of the best signal-callers in NFL history. Brady won six Super Bowls with the Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring last season. Manning won the Super Bowl once with the Colts and once with the Denver Broncos, which came during his final year in 2015.

But even with Manning retiring after winning it all that year, Brady continued to take shots at him. In 2021, Brady was in attendance when Manning was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“I just need to make sure he’s really done,” Brady said on X. “Can’t risk this guy coming back…”

Nick Saban has one request for Alabama fans ahead of Tennessee clash

0

The noise level at Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium in October 2022 was deafening as the Tennessee Vols upset Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide to snap a 15-game losing streak.

There’s no doubt Saban remembers, and he’s now asking Alabama fans to return the favor.

No. 17 Tennessee travels to No. 11 Alabama Saturday as the rivals square off for the 106th time.

“We talk about what a great rivalry game this is and what a big game it is, but it should be a big game for everybody. You know, everybody is on the team, all the fans, everybody. And the fans in this game should have a huge impact on this game,” Saban said Thursday on the “Hey Coach & The Nick Saban Show.”

“You can have a huge impact with the noise that you make. This team [Tennessee] is trying to go fast. They run 2.7 plays every minute in the game.

“So, you can affect that and disrupt that by making noise. And it’s going to create energy and an environment that our players will play better in, they’ll be able to sustain their intensity better in. Which is what we lost last week.”

Tennessee has not won at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2003, losing the last nine matchups in Tuscaloosa.

“These guys make a lot of explosive plays. They go fast,” Saban added. “So, it’s going to be one of those kind of games. And everybody has to stay with it, and you got to play the next play and stay in it as fans. And you create the momentum of the game by what you do as fans. Don’t worry about the players creating it. You create it for them.

“One time. One time I’m asking you to do that.”

Unlike last year’s matchup, the defenses will get most of the attention.

Alabama and Tennessee are third and fourth, respectively, in the SEC in yards allowed per game, and both defenses are giving up less than 20 points per game.

Tennessee’s defense gets after the quarterback — 24 sacks in six games — while Alabama’s offensive line has allowed 31 sacks on the year (126th in the country).

Ex-Alabama star Brandon Miller named as co-defendant in wrongful death lawsuit filed by Jamea Harris’ mother

0

The family of Jamea Harris, who was shot and killed near the University of Alabama campus in January, has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against three individuals.

Former Alabama star Brandon Miller was one of the men named as a co-defendant in the case. He has not been charged with a crime. In June, Miller was the second overall draft pick.

Former Alabama player Darius Miles and Michael Davis were also named in the lawsuit, which was filed on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama Western Division on behalf of DeCarla Heard, Harris’ mother.

Harris was with her boyfriend and was visiting a family member when she was fatally shot in Tuscaloosa in the early-morning hours in mid-January.

Heard is being represented by Birmingham law firm Farris, Riley & Pitt. The lawsuit alleges that all three defendants “knew or should have known that bringing a dangerous weapon to a dispute and discharging said weapon would likely result in harm.”

Miller is scheduled to begin his rookie season with the Charlotte Hornets when the NBA regular season begins later this month. He signed a four-year contract with the team in July.

During a hearing earlier this year, a police investigator testified that Miller had been at the scene of the deadly shooting. The investigator also said that the gun police claim had been used was found inside Miller’s vehicle.

An attorney representing Miller previously stated that his client “never touched the gun, was not involved in its exchange” and that the basketball player had “no knowledge of any intent to use the weapon.”

Alex Rodriguez doesn’t understand why Yankees haven’t retired his No. 13: ‘It bothers me’

0

From 2004 through 2016, Alex Rodriguez was a cornerstone of the New York Yankees, earning multiple All-Star appearances and playing a big role in their 2009 World Series victory.

His accomplishments with the team – 351 home runs, ranking sixth in franchise history – give him an argument to have his No. 13 retired among the illustrious group that sits in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium today.

In fact, it rubs the three-time MVP the wrong way that his number hasn’t been retired by the team yet.

“Of course, it bothers me,” Rodriguez said on “Evan & Tiki” with Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber on Wednesday. “It’s less about bother, but of course it would be nice to be recognized in one of the coolest places to be in Yankee history, but that’s not my decision.”

Not only has his No. 13 not been retired, but one of the most disastrous free agent signees in the modern era for New York – Joey Gallo – was allowed to wear it when he came to the team in 2021.

“It did not make me happy,” Rodriguez told Roberts and Barber.

When Rodriguez finally ended his 22-year career, 12 of which were with the Yankees, the Bombers didn’t have anyone using his No. 13 until Gallo came along via a trade with the Texas Rangers during the 2021 campaign.

In 140 games, Gallo hit a putrid .159/.291/.368 with 194 strikeouts, 25 homers and 46 RBI.

Rodriguez noted that his relationship with Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner is “fine,” though he admitted to being pretty critical of his former squad in his role as an MLB analyst for FOX and ESPN.

“I’m too critical to the Yankees, and that doesn’t help my case,” Rodriguez said. “But I get paid to tell the truth, and if you guys ask me a question, I’m going to tell you exactly as aI see it and not sugarcoat it because I want my number retired. If it’s not retired, so be it.”

While Rodriguez certainly has the career accolades to be a Hall of Famer, let alone have the Yankees retire his number, his image in baseball will forever be tainted by his steroids suspension that came in 2014 by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. It was the entire 162-game season – a record-setting suspension – though it was initially supposed to be 211 games for his role in MLB’s Biogenesis scandal.

Because of that, Rodriguez’s claim for Cooperstown falls into the category that Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and many others have, as voters continue to keep those stars from the Steroid Era out of the Hall.

Perhaps the same is happening for the Yankees, but Rodriguez certainly believes that his No. 13 should be next to those of Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio and his former teammate Derek Jeter among many others.

‘Raging’ bedbug infestation at Iowa senior living apartment complex leads to lawsuit: ‘Pay special attention’

0

Tenants of the Walnut Court apartments, a large senior living complex in Waterloo, Iowa, have filed a class-action lawsuit against the owners due to what they claim has been a years-long bed bug infestation.

The suit was filed by Theresa Allen, a current tenant, and Gary Montgomery, a former tenant, on behalf of all tenants who have lived on the property since the issue began, as reported by the Iowa Capital Dispatch.

The lawsuit claims that a “raging, unabated bedbug infestation” has been in effect at the 91-unit apartment complex since 2018.

The defendants named in the lawsuit are 315 Walnut Co-Op and Larson Management, the two companies that own and manage Walnut Court apartments.

The tenants claim that over a five-year period, the owner and manager of the property have not taken proper measures to eliminate the bedbugs, which reportedly have moved to different areas of the complex.

They also claim the residents were not informed about the infestation, and that they suffered from bites, rashes and anxiety as a result.

Fox News Digital spoke with an employee of Walnut Court apartments, who directed all questions to the company’s attorney, Henry Bevel with Swisher & Cohrt in Iowa.

BEDBUGS COULD TRANSMIT MRSA BACTERIA THAT CAUSES STAPH INFECTIONS ‘IN SOME SETTINGS,’ STUDY SUGGESTS

When contacted, Bevel told Fox News Digital that the defendants are denying any liability.

He said he could not comment further given the pending litigation.

How bedbugs affect seniors

The task of discovering bedbugs can be harder for seniors, as their skin is actually less sensitive to the bites, according to Robert Edwards, a property manager and pest control expert who specializes in bedbug infestations in Butte, Montana.

Bedbugs - bedding

Bedbugs often hide in the seams of a mattress or box spring, or in cracks in a headboard or bed frame. (iStock)

“In general, about 40% of the population has no reaction to bedbug bites,” Edwards told Fox News Digital. “As we age, that number gets up to around 80%.”

Bedbug bite reaction is usually the first step in identifying the presence of the bugs — so with seniors, the problem is more likely to be an infestation by the time it’s discovered.

For those who do have reactions, the itchy bites can lead to scratching, which could cause other medical problems for seniors.

Older adults tend to have more fragile skin, which means persistent scratching could lead to irritation or infection over time, according to the Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care website.

“Another reason seniors are more vulnerable to bedbugs is that as we age, our vision, mobility and strength generally decrease,” Edwards said. “This makes it more difficult for seniors to inspect hard-to-reach areas for bedbugs.”

It’s harder for a senior person, for example, to crawl across the floor to look under a nightstand or flip over a mattress for inspection, for example.

“Declining vision also makes inspections harder, since a bedbug is about the size of an apple seed and its eggs the size of a grain of sand,” Edwards noted.

Additionally, those living in senior housing are more likely to be exposed to bedbugs, because they are in higher density quarters with a lot of shared common areas, he said.

“Plus, there are a lot of people coming in and out, including friends, family, maintenance and medical staff,” added Edwards.

IS IT JUST A MOSQUITO BITE — OR COULD IT BE ‘SKEETER SYNDROME’? HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW

Ben McAvoy at Insectek Pest Solutions in Phoenix, Arizona, agreed that elderly adults can be more vulnerable to bedbugs because of their sedentary lifestyle and their difficulty in noticing infestations when they occur.

“Caretakers and loved ones should pay special attention to signs of bedbug activity by inspecting mattress seams, bedding and bedroom furniture regularly,” McAvoy told Fox News Digital.

“Routine inspections become even more important if an elderly adult is in an assisted living facility,” he continued.

“The top things to look for are brownish red stains on bedding, the physical bedbugs themselves, and exoskeleton sheddings left behind by the maturing bedbugs.”

Bedbug basics

Bedbugs are small, flat, oval-shaped insects that are reddish-brown and do not have wings, according to WebMD.

They feed on the blood of humans and animals, usually by biting at night.

Bedbug bites typically cause a red, itchy spot on the skin.

Some people with a bedbug allergy may experience severe itching.

BEST CARE FOR BUG BITES: DOCTORS SHARE TREATMENT TIPS FOR MINOR AND SEVERE BITES

The bites are often found in clusters, either in a straight row or zigzag pattern, WebMD states.

It can take up to two weeks for the bite marks to become visible. They are typically found on the back, arms, legs, shoulders and neck.

Bedbugs can easily move from one area of a home or building to another. They are also often transported via luggage, furniture, boxes or bags.

Exterminator

To ensure complete removal, chemical treatments with pesticides are often necessary. Experts recommend hiring a professional exterminator who has treated properties for bedbugs in the past. (iStock)

The bugs often hide in the seams of a mattress or box spring, or in cracks in a headboard or bed frame.

Here are some telltale signs of bedbugs, according to WebMD:

  • Actual bedbugs in the bed
  • Blood spots on the sheets or mattress
  • Tiny, pale yellow eggs or eggshells
  • Tiny black dots (bed bug feces)
  • White, oval eggs (about as big as an apple seed)
  • A sweet, musty odor around the bed

To eliminate bedbugs, experts recommend washing all bedding, clothing and curtains in hot water.

Next, use a stiff brush to scrub the mattress to dislodge any bedbugs or eggs from the seams.

Then, vacuum the bed and the area surrounding it every day.

It is also recommended that people use a mattress encasement during this process to prevent bedbugs from escaping or entering, WebMD noted.

In today’s fast-paced world, the classic tale of bumping into ‘the one’ at a coffee shop is getting rare. Now, a single selfie on the dating app SciMatch is all it takes to open the doors to potential romantic sparks.

This newcomer on the dating app scene is shaking things up by tossing out the tedious task of crafting dating profiles, opting instead to dive into AI-powered facial recognition

Love at first . . . algorithm?

SciMatch proposes a simple premise. Snap a selfie, and let the app do the rest. Its AI, named A.I. Ruby, scans your facial features to deduce personality traits and fish out compatible profiles from its database.

While this method promises an escape from the tedious swipe-left, swipe-right routine, it also veers away from the age-old romantic notion of stumbling upon love organically. There’s a certain charm in getting to know someone through shared smiles, awkward silences and the gradual unraveling of personalities over coffee dates. SciMatch, with its tech-driven approach, seems to leapfrog over these tender, formative moments.

How facial features reveal the ‘Big Five’ personality traits

The underpinning science of SciMatch encompasses a collective body of research in the field that demonstrates the capabilities of deep learning algorithms in extracting personality traits from facial images. The research delves into how our faces can be a roadmap to understanding traits like extroversion, neuroticism, openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness.

PHILIPPINE MILITARY ORDERED TO STOP USING AI APPS

These traits form a part of a recognized model in psychology known as the “Big Five” personality traits, which are often considered to be the core traits that encompass a range of other personality traits. This research suggested that machine learning could be employed to identify these “five-dimensional personalized features” from static facial features.

SciMatch lets you find lookalike matches to your celebrity crush

Adding a sprinkle of celebrity allure, SciMatch allows you to upload photos of your celebrity crushes in a bid to find lookalike matches. It’s a fun, playful feature but also a stark reminder of how digital dating is morphing into a somewhat superficial game where appearances reign supreme.

SciMatch’s virtual speed dating feature

A virtual speed dating feature of the SciMatch app allows you to have five-minute video dates with potential matches and see your compatibility in real time. If you like someone, you can send them a message or a wink to show your interest and continue the conversation on the app.

The price of digital love

SciMatch has got people talking with its claims of an 87% accuracy rate in personality matching. It’s a hit with many, but not all are singing its praises. Some critics call it “complete wizardry” and worry that it’s pulling us away from real, human connections. The quick chase for the “perfect match” might be skipping over the nice part of slowly getting to know someone.

We reached out to SciMatch, and Yanina Strylets, its Founder and CEO, had this to say:

“Through AI, we delve deeper than mere appearances and shared interests; we tap into the very essence of human connection — the alignment of personalities. After all, love isn’t about both adoring cats or liking the same sport; it’s about our souls resonating with each other. Faces tell stories that words often can’t, and they’re our guiding compass, providing honest data that’s not easy to forget. With the help of AI and proven psychological models, we’re here to light the path to genuine connection.”

How technology is transforming online dating

Now, with SciMatch and other dating platforms diving into AI, the dating game is getting a tech twist. Big players like the company behind Tinder, Hinge and OkCupid are also playing around with AI to make dating easier.

MORE: HOW TO AVOID THE WORST DATING APP SCAMMERS

Scammers can use AI to create fake profiles and trick you

Here’s the snag: With AI, there could be a new set of scams popping up. One big concern is fake profiles made using AI.

Imagine a profile where the photo, the voice on the other end of the phone, and even the funny bio were all cooked up by AI. It’s like a fake person pretending to be real, which could open a whole new door for scammers. This means real people looking for love might get tricked emotionally and even financially.

With AI getting in on the dating action, it’s becoming easier for scammers to create fake identities. The tech for making fake images and voices is rapidly getting better, which could lead to more fake profiles that seem very real.

The scary part? There’s a real possibility you could fall for someone who turns out to be just a bunch of code and not a real person.

MORE: DON’T EVER DO THIS ON A DATING APP

How to spot and avoid online dating scams on dating apps

Online dating scams are a serious threat to your safety and finances, so you should be careful and vigilant when looking for a potential match on any dating app.

Be wary of profiles that have very little information, only one or two photos or photos that look like stock images or models. These could be signs of fake or bot accounts that are trying to lure you in. You can use tools like reverse image search to check if the photos have been taken from somewhere else.

Don’t rush to move the conversation to another platform, such as email, phone or social media. Scammers often try to get you to leave the dating app or site so they can avoid security measures and scam you more easily. Stay on the app or site until you feel comfortable and trust the person you’re talking to.

Be careful about sharing personal or financial information with someone you’ve just met online. Scammers may ask you for details like your full name, address, bank account, credit card or social security number. They may also ask you for compromising photos or videos that they can use to blackmail you later in a sextortion scam. Never send money or gifts to someone you haven’t met in person.

Watch out for red flags in their messages, such as poor grammar and spelling, inconsistent stories, vague answers, or requests for money or favors. Scammers may also try to manipulate your emotions by professing their love quickly, making you feel guilty or creating a sense of urgency. Don’t fall for their tricks, and always trust your instincts.

Do some research on the person you’re interested in before meeting them in person. You can use internet tools like background checks or social media searches to verify their identity and see if they have any criminal records or suspicious activities. You can also ask them to video chat with you to see their face and hear their voice.

If you decide to meet someone in person, always choose a public and safe place. Tell someone you trust where you’re going and whom you’re meeting. Don’t let them pick you up or drop you off at your home or workplace. And don’t leave your personal belongings unattended.

Federal judge rules former Baylor coach Art Briles was not negligent in assault case involving former player

0

A judge has dismissed a lawsuit against former Baylor head football coach Art Briles, who was accused of negligence in a case involving a former female student who reported being physically assaulted by one of his players in 2014.

U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman ruled Briles, former athletic director Ian McCaw and Baylor University were not negligent in the case. Judge Pitman said “no reasonable jury can conclude” that happened based on evidence that was presented during trial.

Dolores Lozano, the plaintiff in the case, claimed the three defendants were negligent after reporting her first assault in March 2014, which led to more alleged abuse by Devin Chafin, a running back in the Bears’ program who she had been dating.

Pitman also dismissed a federal Title IX lawsuit against the defendants.

“I am happy for Coach Briles,” his attorney, Reed Simpson, said after the rulings, per KWTX. “He did nothing wrong.”

Briles and McCaw both testified in court Thursday, and Briles said he simply did not know about Lozano or her allegations of assault by Chafin until a lawsuit was filed in 2016.

McCaw noted that when he saw the report of the allegations from a staff member in 2014, he took the appropriate course of action, which included letting her know how to further the report.

“Everything that’s been said about him is not true,” Simpson said about Briles, per ESPN.

Briles was fired by the Bears in 2016 amid investigations into the situation. Simpson said he hopes these dismissals help restore Briles’ reputation as a coach

However, other alleged sexual assaults were discovered by the law firm Pepper Hamilton during an investigation into the school’s handling of the allegations.

Pepper Hamilton accessed dozens of reports in 2015 and 2016 of sexual assault and used five, all claims against football players, in a presentation to the university in May 2016.

Lozano’s report was not brought up in that presentation.

“There is no question that bad things happened and mistakes were made bay Baylor,” said the university’s attorney, Julie Springer. “Baylor accepts and accepted responsibility for those failures. This case is not one of the cases in the findings. In Dolores Lozano’s case, Baylor got it right.”

How Briles is viewed since his firing at Baylor was illustrated after he emerged on the field with Oklahoma Sooners offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, his son-in-law, during the Sooners’ 28-11 win over SMU in September.

Lebby apologized for Briles’ presence.

“Just want everybody to understand, my father-in-law – his presence on the field after the game the other night is just something that created a distraction,” Lebby said in a statement Monday. “And I do – I apologize for that. Why is Bitcoin price up today?

0

Bitcoin (BTC) price is up today, rising to an intra-day high above $30,200 and a new 2-month high. The Bitcoin price increase today comes after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced it would drop all charges against Ripple’s leadership, including CEO Brad Garlinghouse. The crypto community gleefully celebrated Ripple’s victory.

Although Bitcoin price could struggle to hold the $30,000 level, a certain degree of the bullish momentum is likely driven by institutional investors recent amendments to multiple spot Bitcoin ETF applications and retail investors’ hope in the upcoming Bitcoin supply halving.

Let’s look into the reasons why Bitcoin price is up today.

Institutional interest in Bitcoin boosts market sentiment

Despite a bevy of macro headwinds, a rush of spot Bitcoin ETF amendments in mid-October helped BTC price reach above $30,000 for the first time in 2-months, boosting market sentiment.

After U.S. Court of Appeals Circuit Judge Neomi Rao sided with Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) in its case against the SEC on Aug. 29, many large institutions filed for ETFs. On Oct. 14, Grayscale secured another victory after the SEC announced that it would not appeal this decision. The decision not to appeal may have led to Grayscale filing for a new spot Bitcoin ETF on Oct. 19.

To date, the SEC has refused to approve a spot Bitcoin ETF despite numerous applicants including BlackRock, Fidelity, ARK Invest and 21Shares which has filed for approval three times.

The Bitcoin halving narrative is back

The next Bitcoin halving is projected to take place in April 2024 and analysts continue to debate whether or not the event will produce bullish outcomes for BTC price this time.

According to Capriole Investments,

“Through Bitcoin’s 14 years of cyclical history, all of its returns and more were accounted for in the 12-18 month period following each Halving. Investing in the 4-6 months prior to each Halving saw even greater 12 month performance in 2020.”

A Bitcoin ETF approval could help solve the liquidity issue, generating $600 billion in new demand according to reports. A recent report from Capriole Investments suggested that gold instantly sprung out of a bear market to generate a 350% return after a Gold ETF was approved.

The market perceives coins leaving crypto exchanges as a bullish signal, given traders withdraw their BTC typically when they want to hold it in self-custody long-term. On Oct. 19, long-term Bitcoin holders hit 76% of all BTC ownership for the first time in history.
