Universal Music Group (UMG) announced a new partnership with social music creation platform BandLab Technologies on Oct. 18 to promote responsible practices with artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry.
The partnership focuses on the “ethical use of AI,” with one of the main goals being to protect the rights of artists and songwriters.
Michael Nash, executive vice president and chief digital officer of UMG, added:
“This is more important than ever right now as AI assumes an increasingly prominent place in the evolution of music creation tools.”
Nash commented that along with protecting artists’ rights, the two entities plan to create responsible approaches to using AI in creative processes to “champion human creativity and culture.”
A similar sentiment was expressed by the CEO of the Recording Academy, the institution behind the Grammy Awards, in an interview with Cointelegraph. He said AI could be an “amplifier” of human creativity.
This is not the first time UMG has taken on AI-related issues. In August, UMG and Google were reportedly in talks over ways to combat AI deep fakes through the development of a new tool that would allow for the creation of AI tracks using artists’ likenesses in a legal way.
YouTube said it had been in talks with major music industry players such as UMG over how to develop the principles. One was the introduction to its new “Music AI Incubator.”
The struggle for copyright infringement matters between artists, musicians and creators regarding AI has even reached the courts. In August 2023, a United States judge denied copyright for AI art.
Electric vehicle maker Tesla made no changes to its sizeable Bitcoin (BTC) holdings — the fifth quarter in a row — though it has directed more funds to double its computing capacity amid artificial intelligence efforts.
Tesla’s Q3 2023 results released on Oct. 18 show as of Sept. 30, it held $184 million worth of digital assets — a portion of the $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin it first bought in March 2021.
The latest quarterly results mean it hasn’t bought or sold any Bitcoin since its sell-off of around 75% of its holdings in Q2 2022 when it fetched $936 million for more than 30,000 BTC.

On the other hand, Tesla reported it had “more than doubled the size” of its computing power for its AI projects, citing a growing training data set and switching the training of its humanoid robot Optimus to AI rather than coded software.
“We have commissioned one of the world’s largest supercomputers to accelerate the pace of our AI development, with compute capacity more than doubling compared to Q2.”
Tesla saw its third-quarter earnings and profits miss Wall Street estimates, with reported total revenues of $23.35 billion. While this was up by nearly 9% from the prior-year period, it missed Zacks Investment Research’s estimate of $24.38 billion.
It also missed projected profits, with reported earnings per share (EPS) of $0.66 compared to Zack’s $0.72 EPS estimate.
Total third-quarter operating expenses came in at $2.41 billion, marking more than a 13% increase from last quarter and over a 42.5% increase from the prior year.
Tesla’s research and development expenses were $1.16 billion in the quarter, a 58% jump from last year. It attributed the increases to its “Cybertruck, AI and other R&D projects.”

Tesla shares were down nearly 4.8% on the day, closing at $242.68 and fell a further 4.25% in after-hours trading to $232.37 per Google Finance data.
Ian Kinsler received a standing ovation when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at Globe Life Park on Wednesday night.
Kinsler spent eight of his 14 years in the Major Leagues with the Texas Rangers, picking up three All-Star nods playing in Arlington.
He was a 17th-round selection in the 2003 MLB Draft, but quickly became one of their top prospects, and eventually a fan favorite. He had two 30-30 seasons with the Rangers, and is now a special assistant to general manager Chris Young.

But on Wednesday night, he made it clear he had other things in mind aside from baseball.
Kinsler is American-Israeli, as his father is Jewish. In 2020, he obtained citizenship in Israel, and played for the country during the 2020 Olympics. Earlier this year, he managed Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic.

So, as the crowd roared seeing their favorite No. 3 take the field before the game started, Kinsler took the field rocking his Team Israel jersey.
Kinsler has the most stolen bases out of all Jewish players with 243.
Israel went 1-4 in the Olympics and 1-2 in the WBC. Kinsler won the WBC as a member of Team USA in 2017.
Kinsler, a member of the Rangers’ Hall of Fame, won a World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2018.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes knows exactly what he wants to do when his playing days come to an end: NFL ownership.
Mahomes spoke about his latest sports ownership venture, buying into the Alpine Formula One race team, on Wednesday. Sports franchise investments has been a great venture for him, as he has stakes in MLB’s Kansas City Royals, MLS’s Sporting KC and NWSL’s Kansas City Current.
Once he’s done playing, though, Mahomes has his sights set on NFL ownership, and it’s his competitive spirit that drives him toward that ambition.

“Eventually, when I’m done playing,” Mahomes told reporters, via ESPN. “I think Tom [Brady] is trying to do it right now, but that’s definitely where you want to get to. I love this sport, and want to give back in any way possible. When I’m done playing, obviously I’ll be a Chiefs fan, but at the same time I want to have that competitive edge I’ve always had my entire life.”
So Mahomes isn’t necessarily saying he wants to keep it in the Kansas City family like he has with three of his sports ownership groups. And it’s because Mahomes is also aware of how hard it is to own in the NFL.
In the meantime, the two-time league MVP continues to see where he might be able to invest.
“I’m always looking around,” he explained. “I can’t do it in the NFL while I’m playing, so I’m always looking around at other sports. It’s hard to get in all sports, NBA and all that different type of stuff, but I’m always keeping my ears open. If they give me the opportunity, I’m going to jump at it.”

F1 has widely grown in the United States, leading not just Mahomes to want a piece in Alpine Formula One, which made its debut in 2021. Fellow Chiefs player Travis Kelce and PGA Tour professional Rory McIlroy have stakes in it as well.
“I think everybody can see the appeal,” Mahomes said. “I’ve been able to get to a couple races now. Seeing the environment and watching ‘Drive to Survive’ on Netflix, you see how competitive it is. Anytime you get an opportunity to get in on that. . . . I’m competitive on everything we can get, and so hopefully it can open up to some great opportunities, and we’re able to go to some of those races and have a little stake in the game.”
Mahomes will remain in his own profession for the time being, and he’s been excelling there with two Super Bowl titles already under his belt, including winning it all this past season.

The Chiefs are already 5-1 to start the season with Mahomes leading the way. Perhaps one day he’ll be off the field, hoping the team he owns will be producing like his current squad does today.

Taylor Swift has attended multiple Kansas City Chiefs games this season as rumors continue to swirl about a possible romance between her and two-time Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce.
Last month, Kelce told ESPN’s Pat McAfee that he invited Swift to one of his games.
“I threw the ball in her court and, you know, I told her, ‘I’ve seen you rock the stage at Arrowhead and you might have to come see me rock the stage at Arrowhead and see which one is a little more lit,'” Kelce said during the interview.
Now, USWNT star and San Diego Wave FC forward Alex Morgan is asking Swift to attend a “real football game.”

“There’s an open invitation, always,” Morgan said after the Wave’s regular-season finale. “American football games are fun, but real football is even more fun.”
Swift’s support for the USWNT goes back several years. After the American women won the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the pop star invited some of the members of the team on-stage while she was touring in support of her “1989” album.

This past summer, Swift helped reveal the USWNT 2023 World Cup roster. Shaquille O’Neal, Lil Wayne and other notable stars were also featured in the special announcement ahead of the Women’s World Cup.
Swift and Kelce made separate, surprise appearances on the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live.” They were also spotted together at an after party. Swift has attended three Chiefs games this season.
The National Women’s Soccer League posted Morgan’s quote about inviting Swift to a future soccer game with the caption: “What would happen if you just called Taylor up?”
Bitcoin layer-2 infrastructure firm Lightning Labs has released the mainnet alpha of Taproot Assets, a protocol aimed at enabling stablecoins and real-world assets to be issued on the Bitcoin and Lightning Network.
The current version, Taproot Assets v0.3, will provide a “feature-complete developer experience” to issue, manage and explore stablecoins and other assets on the Bitcoin blockchain, according to Ryan Gentry, head of business development at Lightning Labs.
“We believe this new era for Bitcoin will see a myriad of global currencies issued as Taproot Assets, and the world’s foreign exchange transactions settled instantly over the Lightning Network.”
“With this release, developers can issue financial assets on-chain in a scalable manner,” Lightning Labs stated on Oct. 18 in a separate post. “Today marks a new era of multi-asset bitcoin.”
Announcing the first mainnet release of Taproot Assets , a protocol for assets on #bitcoin and Lightning.
With this release, developers can issue financial assets on-chain in a scalable manner.
This version of Taproot Assets will work by routing through existing Bitcoin liquidity on the Lightning Network.
Gentry says the integration will extend Bitcoin’s network effects and move it one step closer toward “bitcoinizing the dollar.” He added:
“This is how we make bitcoin the global routing network for the internet of money. This is how we bitcoinize the dollar and the world’s financial assets.”
Gentry described developer demand for stablecoin applications on Bitcoin as “overwhelming” — particularly given that some stablecoin issuers hold more United States Treasuries than the likes of Germany, South Korea.
Nearly 2,000 Taproot Assets were minted on testnets over the last several months in the lead up to the mainnet alpha launch, according to Gentry.
Alpha launches typically mean the development isn’t in its final state. Lightning Labs said the alpha tag indicates that they expect the community to test it for potential bugs.
In the NFL, the quarterback usually gets the majority of the credit when their team wins and the lion’s share of the blame when a team loses. But in the case of Pro Bowl quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, things are more nuanced.
Tagovailoa is in the midst of an impressive season. Entering Week 7, the Miami Dolphins quarterback is leading the league in passing yards and is tied for first place in touchdowns. Tagovailoa started showing significant signs of improvement last season under head coach Mike McDaniel.
McDaniel spent several years coaching under San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. McDaniel has seamlessly implemented his offensive system in Miami, which has resulted in the best offense in the NFL.

McDaniel’s innovative system has prompted questions about whether Tagovailoa’s success this season is largely due the coach’s play calling and offensive scheme.
During Wednesday’s press conference, McDaniel was asked if other quarterbacks across the league could benefit from the Dolphins’ system, and the second-year head coach gave a fiery response.
“I’m about to push this podium over,” McDaniel said when a reporter suggested that many other quarterbacks could thrive in his system. “My answer to that would be, who the F cares? Because it is a team, we’re working together, and I know one thing: I’ve coached a long time, I haven’t seen people do what our guys do – to their credit, to their ability and their commitment to their craft.”
McDaniel added that the team is focused on working together.
“As a teammate, we’re all dependent on each other. I’m not in any hurry to prove myself without those guys because those are part of who we are. To say it’s this person or that person is kind of missing the point. It is a team working together, people working together. Myself, Tyreek Hill, Tua, cool, but what if no one’s blocking anyone? You know what I mean? We’re all connected in that way. That’s why, I think, a lot of the guys … Tua’s success in their success, Tyreek’s success, Waddle’s, Raheem’s, etc.”
The Dolphins are leading the league in many of the offensive categories. McDaniel said the team’s success so far this season is a result of hard work and “unbelievable abilities.”

“It’s a journey that we’re experiencing together. Somebody will get the statistics from it, but none of those statistics are worth anything if you don’t have a full support from your players across the board, all 11, and then it goes down to the organization and all those things combined. But I know this: Our players run a lot of plays that I have a lot of history with, and it looks different, and that’s because of hard work and unbelievable abilities.”
“Don’t try me on other players. I’m not trying to prove that.”
Tagovailoa will certainly need to continue to play at a high level if the Dolphins want to keep having success. Meanwhile, McDaniel appears to want to make sure that every player on the team can be the best version of themselves.

Football has often been referred to as the ultimate team sport, and McDaniel seems to want the focus to remain on the team and not individuals.
Tagovailoa faced criticism earlier this season. He threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. But despite his solid day throwing the football, Tagovailoa still had some doubts about his ability to throw the ball down the field.
“I don’t care,” Tagovailoa said when asked about those who question whether he can throw the deep ball. “I mean, I don’t care – 466. That’s what 466 is if I can’t throw deep. Thanks.”

First, it was Micah Parsons. Now, San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel is responding to shots fired by Detroit Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Gardner-Johnson posted a comment about a skirmish between Samuel and members of the Cleveland Browns before the Niners’ first loss of the season, a 19-17 upset on the road.
“U see Deeboo Run,” Gardner-Johnson posted on X with a laughing emoji. “Typical WR behavior…THEN ACT HARD WHEN TRENT [WILLIAMS] SAVE HIM.”

Samuel got his word in with his own post on X, and he used an old clip from when Gardner-Johnson was playing for the New Orleans Saints to do so.
In 2021, Chicago Bears wide receiver Javon Wims decided to punch Gardner-Johnson with his helmet on after a play.
“Boy stop playing before you get a rewind of this….boy sit down,” Samuel tweeted to Gardner-Johnson.
Gardner-Johnson, who has been on injured reserve with a pectoral injury, fired back.
“Deeboo, your not like that,” he said with a yawning emoji.
He also went on Instagram Live, saying, “Don’t be friendly when you see me because you be so flashy. You better hope all that talk you be doing when we see y’all whenever that may be. Because I can guard you. You can’t run routes, you’re a running back. You’re a running back. I’m not going to sit here and play with you, little boy.”
Making an appearance on the “Up & Adams Show” with Kay Adams Wednesday, Samuel responded to the Instagram Live video from Gardner-Johnson.

“He just sound like he’s mad I got a little bag and a lot of money and no one knows who he is,” Samuel said, adding that the Instagram Live was “comedy.”
Samuel and Gardner-Johnson would have to meet in the playoffs to see what would happen between the two in-person because they don’t have a regular-season game scheduled. At the moment, both teams look destined to reach the postseason. The Lions own the NFC North lead, and the 49ers lead the NFC West. Both teams are 5-1.

A recent panel at the Swan Pacific Bitcoin festival was cleverly titled, “Are halving price cycles bullshit?” Throughout the discussion, host and founder of the Bitcoin Layer Nik Bhatia asked Marathon Digital CEO Fred Thiel, Swan CIO Ralph Zagury and Swan product manager Andy Edstrom to share their thoughts on whether the Bitcoin halving is truly a bullish event or just another narrative that novice investors buy into.
While the panel’s headline might be offputting for some, the inquiry is of great interest to all manner of Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrency investors. The conventional belief held by many in the space is that the Bitcoin supply halving is a bullish phenomenon that when complete, is followed by near parabolic upside in BTC price.
Go and ask any Bitcoin lover about what they’re most excited about in the next year and if they don’t mention the chance for a spot Bitcoin ETF approval first, they’re probably going to say the upcoming halving event.
Previous Bitcoin halving events have coincided with bull markets ramping up.
But will the macro conditions be ripe for that next year in May?
~ If we are past the initial shock of a recession. ~ If a spot BTC ETF is approved. ~ If QE is back on the menu.
While previous performance does provide some compelling evidence for what might happen in the next halving, questioning long held assertions and price expectations for a high volatility asset like Bitcoin is probably something every investor should do more often — especially when considering the number of bearish events that have occurred in the past two years.
To start the discussion, host Nik Bhatia jumped right in by asking “if the halving is the main driver of the Bitcoin price?”
Thiel quickly responded with:
“In this cycle, no, I think it’s liquidity”
Zagury agreed, adding that “flow is really what drives the market, so the halving by definition, there’s nothing on it that should impact price.” Interestingly, Edstrom took a different position by suggesting that:
“I think the halving is still bullish and we can debate what the magnitude of that effect is, but yeah, I think it still matters for price.”
Each panelist, including host Bhatia seemed to agree that while the halving may possess some market moving capacity, it could be diminishing over time. According to Bhatia,
“The halving affects supply. It is less and less material as time goes on and it does nothing to affect demand. But from a psychological perspective, we might be able to play devil’s advocate.”
Halving hype and hopium is all in investors’ heads
Panelists at the “Are halving price cycles bullshit?” panel. Source: Swan Bitcoin YouTube
Speculation is essentially at the root of all investing, and while Zagury and Thiel are of the mind that investors attribute more hope, than fact, to the forecast impact of the Bitcoin halving, Edstrom sees the event as the manifestation of a “psychological feedback loop coming into the demand side.”
“We think that Bitcoin price is going to be higher in the future, and by extension we are applying a lens of investment as we’re investing in Bitcoin.”
Another popular yearslong held belief by many investors is the role derivatives play in Bitcoin’s price discovery. Bhatia asked whether derivatives played a larger role than spot trading in impacting Bitcoin’s price action and Zagury said,
“The reality is that the data points we have, in terms of halving, are not enough to come to any conclusion. If you look historically at Bitcoin price, we’ve got the whole data set of price, and you try to find patterns of distribution, of how returns actually work, very quickly you see that there’s a lot of outer correlation, which means that price depends on time and also past performance.”
According to Zagury, “a thing about Bitcoin which is super curious, and I think there isn’t any other asset class like this out there, is that most of the time, Bitcoin is moving either sideways, in terms of number of days, it’s either sideways or down.”
Bitcoin’s time spent trading in a rangebound band or in a downtrend is what Zagury says “makes it really hard to hodl, right, because it means you’re going to have months and years of pain and you’re going to have days of glory.”
“Being a hodler by definition, by distribution of prices that you see historically, it’s extremely hard.”
Peddling back to the initial question about the role derivatives play in Bitcoin price discovery, Zagury said:
“When we talk about derivatives, the first thing you’re going to talk about is probability. It’s impossible to conclude what is really going to happen with Bitcoin price, that’s the first thing that you conclude by looking at historical returns. Going back to the halving, the fact that it actually outer correlates a lot, sometimes, in particular times of low liquidity. A small move that bumps the price up, the marginal seller out there will go through the short term sellers and then the price will jump up significantly. This explains why price moves up very very quickly.”
Liquidity will be the focal point
Despite discounting the impact of Bitcoin supply halvings on BTC price, each panelist expressed their positive longer-term bullish perspectives for Bitcoin’s value.
With liquidity being the agreed upon future price catalyst for Bitcoin, Zagury said:
“I’m very bullish. I think we are going to see that soon, because liquidity has been drawing down and we see that these things are starting to happen and it’s not going to take a lot for us to see a very big move.”
When asked when and how this all-important liquidity comes back, Edstrom hinted that 10-year U.S. Treasuries pushing above 5%, the potential regional bank failures that mirror the ones seen 6 months ago, and the rising amount of banks holding long duration government debt at a loss, are all signs that a Federal Reserve pivot that returns to quantitative easing could occur sooner than later.

It wasn’t a Terrell Owens that’s-my-quarterback moment for Micah Parsons, but the Dallas Cowboys standout had a lot of things to say about how people have been bashing his team and quarterback Dak Prescott recently.
On his weekly podcast “On The Edge with Micah Parsons,” the elite edge rusher called out media outlets for their treatment of the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles after they both lost on Sunday to erase their undefeated records this season.
Starting with the Niners, who blew out the Cowboys 42-10 in Week 5, Parsons believes they got a free pass from former NFL player and current sports media personality Emmanuel Acho.

“I heard a quote, Acho said this, which pissed me off,” Parsons began. “He said, ‘I’m not worried about the 49ers, they were missing Christian McCaffrey. They were missing Deebo Samuel.’ This is what pissed me off about that, OK. They started that game. The Browns were missing Deshaun Watson. They were missing Nick Chubb. They were missing Jack Conklin. They were missing them key factors before the game even started. So, why is it that [the Cowboys] are just scrubs, and we’re nobodies that don’t deserve to be on the field, and we’re just all talk, but there’s 100 excuses for these other teams?”
Parsons has already shown some beef with the 49ers’ versatile receiver in Samuel, who posted a graphic of Parsons saying, “This is who I wanted,” before the Niners’ beatdown on the Cowboys. Parsons went into his comments on Instagram, and the two stars traded barbs with each other.
Parson responded: “Lol what did you do today fam lol?! But congrats on the win! But don’t put me in this weak a– slide.” Samuel replied, “what did you do is [the] question.”
That bad blood was already there between Parsons and the 49ers, but he called out his NFC East rivals as well in his argument.
The Eagles fell to the New York Jets in shocking fashion, as Jalen Hurts was picked off three times, which included his final interception that led to the Jets’ game-winning touchdown from running back Breece Hall.
But Hurts wasn’t dragged around in the media for his performance while Prescott’s three interceptions against the 49ers was talked about extensively in the following days after the loss.
“I just don’t condone the bashing of Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys and [not] have the same energy for the Eagles,” Parsons explained. “The Eagles were healthy. They had Jalen Hurts. They had their receiving corps. They didn’t have Lane Johnson. I will admit they didn’t have Lane Johnson. … Because I see my quarterback maybe not have the red-zone success but move the ball way better than the Eagles did Sunday night.”

“We want the same energy for everybody. Because there’s a whole bunch of bashing when it’s Dak Prescott but not the same when it’s the Eagles.”
Parsons has some backing for the Eagles argument, too. While they haven’t faced off yet this season, the Cowboys destroyed the Jets at AT&T Stadium in Week 2 of the season, which Parsons brought up.
“They said we didn’t have a significant win [against the Jets],” Parsons said. “They said we beat a nameless – Zach Wilson – or a team without Aaron Rodgers, all these things. One thing that the Jets did have was Sauce Gardner, D.J. Reed. They were also missing a few other pieces, and they beat the Eagles. But apparently, the Jets aren’t a significant win. They aren’t a good team without Aaron Rodgers, which I said wasn’t true. I’m glad that Zach Wilson is proving people wrong. He just beat a great Eagles team.”
The extra attention on the mishaps of the Cowboys is something Parsons should be used to by now. Much like the New England Patriots, the Cowboys can rub fans of other teams the wrong way. It’s the price of success over the years.

But Parsons is clearly showing that he’s not afraid to wear that star proudly, and anyone that has something to say about the team will be hearing from him shortly after.
