TikTok’s viral back-scratching service takes off in Miami area

A new wellness fad is raking in business in the Miami area: paying someone to lightly scratch your back, scalp and arms for pure relaxation. 

“I think it’s a very weird thing,” Tomi Lahren said on “Outnumbered” on Aug. 29 in response to the trend.

“I guess good for them for making a business out of it, but why am I not surprised that something like this has gone viral on TikTok?”

The family-run Scratcher Girls brand bills itself as purveyors of “professional back scratching,” operating a studio in Miami Gardens and a weekend booth at Hollywood’s Yellow Green Farmers Market.

The company calls itself the first of its kind and says clients come for “mood-enhancing scratch therapy.”

Online booking shows pricing at $74.99 for 30 minutes and $129.99 for an hour; couples sessions run higher. Clients are asked to arrive clean, and staff can do a scalp check if “hair play” is requested.

Part of the surge in popularity comes from social media. Scratcher Girls’ ASMR-style TikTok clips have pushed the niche service into the mainstream, sparking hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of likes, and turning the simple act of a soothing scratch into viral content.

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a “previously unstudied sensory phenomenon,” according to the National Institute of Health, in which individuals experience a tingling, static-like sensation in response to specific audio and visual stimuli.

“I will say, my boys, they have my mom scratch their back… they love it… they melt, they fall asleep,” co-host Tiffany Smiley added as an example of the appeal.

Longevity simplified to two main metrics by cardiovascular surgeon Dr. London

There are numerous paths to living a longer, healthier life, mostly through physical activity, diet and other lifestyle factors.

But according to board-certified cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Jeremy London, the key to longevity could come down to two main metrics.

In a video posted to his more than one million followers on social media, London broke down how two factors – VO2 max and muscle mass – can help increase health span and lifespan.

VO2 max is an indicator of how efficiently the body utilizes oxygen with intense exercise, said London, who is based in Savannah, Georgia.

“In other words, the health of your cardiovascular system,” he said. “Not surprising that it increases health span and lifespan.”

In an on-camera interview with Fox News Digital, London added that VO2 max is “statistically” the No. 1 indicator of longevity. (See the video at the top of this article.)

In comparing individuals with a low VO2 max to those with a higher VO2 max, scientists have identified “magnitudes of improvement” in reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, as well as increasing longevity.

“Even if you’ve never exercised, or if you haven’t exercised for a long time, you can still get benefits.”

A recent Harvard Medical School publication confirmed that a high VO2 correlates with better physical fitness and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

“If you know your VO2 max, you can use it as a tool to help you exercise more efficiently,” the Harvard experts wrote.

“If you have a higher VO2 max, that means your heart and lungs are more effectively supplying blood to your muscles, and that your muscles are efficiently extracting and using oxygen from your blood. That’s why a high VO2 max is a good indicator of a high fitness level.”

Muscle mass is the next element that can impact longevity, London noted.

“It’s a close second, and plays a significant role in the ability to continue daily life activities as we age,” he told Fox News Digital. “The combination of the two is the magic sauce.”

One reason is that muscle is a “glucose sink,” meaning it decreases the risk of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.

When the body is ill, muscle mass can also secrete “myocines,” which are anti-inflammatory proteins that can decrease the severity of illnesses.

“Muscle is so important for your functional capacity, being able to do the things you want to do in later years,” London said. “The deadlifts you do at 30 enable you to pick up the suitcase at 80.”

Building muscle mass doesn’t always require heavyweight training or strenuous exercise. In fact, London said he’s sometimes hesitant to use the word “exercise” at all.

“Just move,” he said. “It could be dancing for some people, it could be swimming, it could be just going for a walk … It may just be body weight or yoga, or Pilates or whatever.”

The key is consistency, he emphasized, and finding a balance between what you need and what you enjoy doing for fitness and movement.

“There’s no one answer for everybody, but you just want to put your muscles under stress and strain so they can grow,” London went on.

“And you want to be moving on a regular basis during the week so that you’re getting your heart rate up to keep your VO2 max as high as it possibly can be, based on your age.”

Ancient Egyptian sun hat is displayed for first time, 115 years since its discovery

A one-of-a-kind sun hat, likely worn by a Roman soldier in Egypt, was recently unveiled for the first time – and its survival is considered miraculous.

The sun hat is currently on display at the Bolton Museum in Greater Manchester, England. It was found at the Illahun archaeological site in the Egyptian city of Faiyum in 1888. 

The accessory was donated to Bolton’s first museum, the Chadwick Museum, in 1911, and had been in storage for nearly 115 years – until now.

Ian Trumble, a curator of archaeology for Bolton Library & Museum Services, told Fox News Digital the hat survived thanks to Egypt’s dry conditions.

“In Egypt, textiles are often well-preserved in areas where the ground has remained dry, but do not survive in wetter areas nearer to the Nile or in lowland and valley areas that were prone to flooding, such as the Valley of the Kings,” he said.

“This hat was excavated from a drier area of the city, but the Faiyum is generally a wetter area, so the survival of this piece is still quite remarkable.”

The hat is believed to be between 2,100 and 2,400 years old, dating to either the Greek or Roman period of Egyptian history. 

“The exterior of the hat is of a cream-colored wool, whereas the interior is a dyed red wool.”

“Our current theory is that it was worn by a soldier, who could have adapted it for Egyptian conditions when they moved with the Roman army from Anatolia to Egypt,” Trumble said.

There are only two similar hats in existence, the expert noted. One is in Manchester, while the other is in Florence.

“We believe that Bolton’s example was always the more complete survival, but now that the conservation has been done, we believe it to be the best example in the world,” said Trumble.

The hat is made of woolen felt, but the exact type of wool is unknown until further testing.

It would have been “particularly susceptible to damage from pests and natural degradation,” the curator observed.

“The exterior of the hat is of a cream-colored wool, whereas the interior is a dyed red wool,” Trumble said.

“The conservation allowed us to examine the construction of the hat in more detail, and it appears that the conical body of the hat may have been made earlier than the scalloped brim, as the brim is of a less dense felt and seems to have been added onto the body in a different type of stitch.”

The hat now sits in the entrance case to the museum’s Egypt galleries. It will be moved to a permanent display in September.

The Bolton Museum boasts the largest collection of ancient Egyptian textiles in the United Kingdom. Its collection spans over 7,000 years of Egyptian history, Trumble told Fox News Digital.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un met on Wednesday after attending a Chinese military parade celebrating the anniversary of the end of World War II.

Putin and Kim were meeting at the Diaoyutai state guest house in Beijing after spending time with other world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, at the parade.

The two men traveled to the bilateral talks in the same car after departing a formal reception, according to the Kremlin on social media, per The Associated Press.

Putin kicked off the meeting by praising the North Korean soldiers for their “bravery and heroism” in fighting alongside Russian troops in Moscow’s war against Ukraine, according to the AP, which said the North Koreans were specifically helping to keep Ukraine from attacking Russia’s Kursk border region.

South Korea estimates that 15,000 North Korean troops have been sent to Russia since last year.

Along with manpower, North Korea has also supplied Moscow with ballistic missiles and artillery, among other military equipment.

Kim said his country’s cooperation with Russia has “significantly strengthened” since last June when both leaders signed a strategic partnership.

Kim did not bring up the Russia-Ukraine war, per the AP, but told Putin that he would do “everything possible to help” the people of Russia in whatever way is needed.

“If there’s anything I can do for you and the people of Russia, if there is more that needs to be done, I will consider it as a fraternal duty, an obligation that we surely need to bear, and will be prepared to do everything possible to help,” Kim said, according to the AP.

The bilateral meeting between the two marks the first time Kim has been to Beijing since 2019 as he seeks to strengthen ties with China and Russia.

Kim had his senior party and government officials, including Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, with him during the trip, KCNA added. 

The visit comes a couple of weeks after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung met with President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., where he emphasized trilateral cooperation to counter North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile programs.

EU bans chemical used in gel manicures due to health concerns

Gel manicures are a beauty staple for millions, lasting weeks without chips and staying glossy through work, workouts and everything in between. 

But as of Sept. 1, 2025, the European Union has banned a chemical used in many gel polishes, sparking safety concerns and uncertainty for nail salons, according to a press release.

The ingredient in question is Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO). This compound reacts under UV light to make the polish harden quickly and give it a glass-like finish.

The decision appears to stem from several studies linking TPO exposure to fertility issues. 

These studies often focused on animal subjects, not humans, but the EU uses a strict “better safe than sorry” approach when it comes to cosmetics.

Regulators reclassified TPO as a Category 1B CMR substance, meaning it may cause cancer or reproductive harm. Under EU law, that triggered an automatic ban.

As a result, both the marketing and use of cosmetic products containing TPO — including in professional settings like nail salons — are strictly prohibited. 

Gel vs. regular polish

The key difference between gel and regular polish is the application process — and it’s not just the compounds people need to watch, according to Cleveland Clinic.

“The two products usually look identical, but while you simply wait for regular nail polish to dry on its own … gel nail polish quick-dries under a specialized UV or LED lamp in 60 to 90 seconds,” the site reads.

During a manicure, these lamps help to set gel manicures and dry polish. However, they also emit ultraviolet rays, which have been linked to skin cancer and premature aging, the above source stated.

These rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage collagen. However, studies have shown that the connection between nail salon lamps and cancer appears weak or inconclusive.

Salons in the EU must immediately stop using TPO products, even if they stocked up before the deadline, the release states.

Technically, even old bottles of polish containing TPO aren’t legal after Sept. 1. The ban only applies in the EU for now.

The good news for customers, however, is that gel nails aren’t going away. 

Brands are already reformulating with alternative ingredients like TPO-L, BAPO and methyl benzoylformate, according to industry reports.

It projects that 19 million Americans plan to take cruises this year.

Stewart Chiron, a Miami-based cruise industry expert known as “The Cruise Guy,” told Fox News Digital that “2025 is another record year.”

Last year, 18.2 million travelers went on cruises, according to the AAA report.

The cruise forecast report found that 72% of passengers are heading to Caribbean destinations in search of sunny vacation times.

Six percent plan on heading to Alaska, while 5% of people will be cruising in the Mediterranean, according to the report.

He added that he’s seeing interest in the Panama Canal, Japan and Asia growing along with expedition cruises to the North and South Poles.

“Cruise lines are responding to strong demand from cruise passengers who are desiring private destinations and the enticing experiences that are unavailable at the other ports being visited on regular itineraries,” said Chiron.

While the cruise industry is on the uptick, Chiron said there are a few things to consider.

Hackers have repeatedly found ways to bypass Apple’s safeguards, especially on older Macs that no longer receive regular security updates.

The good news: just because your Mac is aging doesn’t mean it has to be at risk. With a few smart precautions, you can keep it safe and running smoothly, even if it’s no longer eligible for the latest macOS version.

1) Keep your older Mac up to date

Even if your Mac no longer supports the latest macOS version, Apple often releases security patches for older versions. Make sure you’ve enabled automatic updates. Follow the steps below to do so:

  • Choose the Apple menu.
  • Select System Settings

  • Then click General in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down).
  • Click Software Update.

  • Click the Info button next to Automatic Updates
  • Then turn on all the options.

2) Update your apps and browsers

Apps, especially web browsers, are a major target for attackers. If you’re using Chrome, Firefox, Brave or another browser, make sure it’s up to date. Most browsers have their own update systems independent of macOS, which is good news if you’re running an older OS.

I’ll walk you through how to update Chrome on your Mac. If you’re using Safari, you can skip this step since it updates automatically alongside your device’s software.

How to update your Chrome browser

  • Open Google Chrome browser
  • Select About Google Chrome from the Chrome menu

  • Allow it to scan from a most recent update

  • Click Relaunch to complete the update

Also check for updates for productivity apps, media players and email clients. Developers often patch vulnerabilities quietly, so it’s worth keeping everything current even if the Mac itself isn’t.

3) Strengthen password protection

A secure Mac starts with a strong password. Avoid simple combinations or anything that includes personal information. Use a passphrase if you have trouble remembering complex strings. Don’t reuse passwords across services. If one account is compromised, others will be too. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

How to Change Your Mac Login Password (with current password)

  • Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
  • Select System Settings (called System Preferences in older macOS versions).
  • Navigate to Users & Groups or Login Password in newer versions.
  • Click the Info (i) button next to your user account.
  • In the pop-up that appears, click Change next to the password field.
  • Enter your old (current) password, then type your new password, verify it, and set a password hint (optional).
  • Click Change Password to finalize.

4) Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of protection to your accounts. Even if someone guesses or steals your password, they won’t be able to log in without the second code, usually sent to your phone or generated by an app.

Make sure 2FA is enabled on your Apple ID, Gmail, social media accounts, banking apps and any cloud services you use. It’s a simple step that significantly increases your account security.

5) Install strong antivirus software

While Macs have built-in security features like Gatekeeper and XProtect, older systems may not receive the latest threat definitions. Installing third-party antivirus software can help fill in the gaps.

This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.

6) Turn on FileVault to encrypt your data

Even if your Mac is older, FileVault can still encrypt your entire hard drive. This protects your data if your device is lost or stolen.

How to turn on FileVault:

  • Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault.
  • Click Turn On FileVault.
  • Choose to use your iCloud account or create a recovery key.
  • Restart your Mac to begin encryption.

Pro tip: If your Mac is too old to support FileVault 2 (full-disk encryption), consider encrypting sensitive files manually using Disk Utility.

7) Use a VPN

Outdated macOS versions may be vulnerable to DNS hijacking or network-based attacks. Secure your internet traffic by enabling a VPN to encrypt your data in transit.  A reliable VPN is essential for protecting your online privacy and ensuring a secure, high-speed connection. 8) Remove unused apps and system extensions

Older apps and background processes can introduce vulnerabilities if they’re no longer maintained.

  • Open Finder > Applications and delete anything you don’t use.
  • Check System Settings > General > Login Items for anything unfamiliar.
  • Review System Settings > Privacy & Security > Extensions and disable outdated tools.

 9) Use a limited (non-admin) user account for everyday use

Running as an admin all the time increases your risk. Creating a standard user account for everyday use limits what malware can do if it sneaks in.

How to add a standard user:

  • Go to System Settings > Users & Groups.
  • Click Add Account (+).
  • Choose Standard instead of Admin.

 10) Back up your data regularly

If malware does sneak in or your system crashes, a recent backup can save the day.

  • Use Time Machine (built into macOS) to back up to an external drive.
  • Or choose a cloud backup provider that supports macOS.

New 3-minute brain test detects early Alzheimer’s signs at home using EEG

A new brainwave test could detect early signs of Alzheimer’s years before diagnosis — in just three minutes.

That’s according to researchers at the University of Bath and the University of Bristol, who recently tested the new technology — called Fastball EEG — in patients’ homes.

The three-minute test records electrical activity in the brain as the person looks at a series of images. It is designed to pick up on signs of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which often precedes Alzheimer’s.

Because Fastball is a “passive” EEG test, it automatically picks up on the brain’s responses without requiring the participants to answer questions or recall information.

This makes it less likely to be influenced by factors such as anxiety, education, culture or language, according to study lead Dr. George Stothart, a cognitive neuroscientist in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath.

“Fastball is sensitive to both pre-diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease and individuals at very high risk of developing it,” Stothart told Fox News Digital. “Importantly, EEG data collection for Fastball is entirely feasible in people’s homes, making it a practical tool for real-world use.”

In the trial, 53 patients with mild cognitive impairment and 54 healthy older adults were tested with the tool to gauge their memory skills. They were then re-tested after one year.

The patients with MCI were found to have “significantly reduced” memory-related brain responses compared to those without any cognitive decline.

The findings were published in the journal Brain Communications.

“We were pleasantly surprised by the test-retest reliability in healthy older adults,” Stothart said. “In the one-year follow-up, measurements remained stable, indicating that for healthy older adults, Fastball provides consistent results over time.”

The main limitation, according to Stothart, is that the researchers didn’t have biomarker data for participants with MCI due to cost and resource constraints. 

“It could be valuable to investigate how this technology could complement other diagnostic methods.”

“However, our larger ongoing clinical validation studies in the U.K. and U.S., each involving 1,000 patients, now include extensive biomarker coverage,” he noted.

The hope is that the tool can be rolled out for use in doctors’ offices, memory clinics or homes, helping to enable earlier Alzheimer’s diagnoses.

That could allow patients to get earlier access to key Alzheimer’s drugs, like donanemab and lecanemab, which are most effective earlier in the disease progression, researchers said.

“Patients themselves do not receive the Fastball results directly,” Stothart said. “Instead, results are provided to the clinician, who integrates them into a broader diagnostic assessment.”

Christopher Weber, Ph.D., senior director of global science initiatives at the Alzheimer’s Association in Chicago, said this technology has potential as a non-invasive tool for the detection of memory changes that could indicate the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

“However, more research is needed before this could be considered for inclusion in the diagnostic toolbox for Alzheimer’s,” Weber, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital.

“This includes confirmation of these findings in larger, more representative study populations, over longer periods of time, where tests are done to confirm that study participants have brain changes related to Alzheimer’s.”

Weber also pointed out that this technology does not appear to determine the cause of the memory loss.

“As a result, it is unclear what the results of this test may mean about your Alzheimer’s risk and/or your health status,” he said. “So even if this tech proves itself with further research, it is still likely that additional tests, looking at disease-related biomarkers or imaging of the brain, would also be needed to inform treatment or risk reduction.”

Despite the limitations, Weber said Fastball may prove to be valuable for initial screening or to inform a patient’s conversations with their doctor. 

“And it could be valuable to investigate how this technology could complement other diagnostic methods, such as PET scans, blood tests and ‘paper-and-pencil’ cognitive assessments,” he added.

Any future use of at-home screening or testing should be done in a “careful and controlled way,” Weber advised.

He added, “When considering any Alzheimer’s- or dementia-related testing, it is important to have a conversation with your healthcare provider to see if you are a candidate.”

Self-driving trucks are moving closer to reality. PlusAI released its first half 2025 performance results, showing how far the company has come toward its goal of launching factory-built autonomous trucks in 2027.

How PlusAI plans to launch autonomous trucks by 2027

PlusAI has created a roadmap that sets it apart. Instead of retrofitting trucks with autonomous systems, it is working with major manufacturers like TRATON GROUP, Hyundai and IVECO to integrate the technology at the factory. This approach makes scaling production faster and ensures consistency.

The initial launch is planned for the Texas Triangle, a major freight corridor connecting Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. From there, PlusAI plans to expand into other U.S. routes and eventually Europe.

The company has also committed to publishing regular performance updates as it transitions to a public company. By sharing measurable results, PlusAI builds trust with regulators, the public, and businesses that may one day rely on its trucks to move goods.

“We have a clear roadmap to the commercial launch of SuperDrive,” said David Liu, CEO and co-founder of PlusAI. “By publicly sharing these performance metrics, we are showing our commitment to safety and scalability while bringing partners, customers, and regulators along on this journey.“

What’s next for PlusAI and driverless freight trucks?

PlusAI still has milestones to meet. Safety readiness must rise from 86 percent to 100 percent. Remote Assistance Free Trips must surpass 90 percent. These are ambitious goals, but the progress so far suggests the company can achieve them.

Fleet trials are scheduled to begin later this year, and PlusAI continues testing in both the United States and internationally. Each step adds to the case that driverless trucks will be ready for commercial launch in 2027.
