Immigration enforcement efforts in Los Angeles served as the ignition point over the weekend, as coordinated ICE raids across the city sparked violent clashes with law enforcement, leading to the arrival of military forces.

The Trump administration’s crackdown culminated in the president’s decisive action Monday to deploy a battalion of hundreds of U.S. Marines to respond to anti-immigration enforcement riots, Fox News has learned.

“Approximately 700 Marines with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division will seamlessly integrate with the Title 10 forces under Task Force 51 who are protecting federal personnel and federal property in the greater Los Angeles area,” U.S. Northern Command said in a statement.

Assemblyman David Tangipa, R-Calif., called the protests an “orchestrated attack.”

“Law enforcement is under violent assault—pelted with bricks and weapons by rioters,” he told Fox News Digital. “This isn’t peaceful protest, it’s an orchestrated attack. Organizers aren’t just enabling it—they’re inciting it. Now, even the Marines are being deployed to restore order.”

“Violence must be condemned and stopped before more lives are put at risk.”

President Donald Trump described the demonstrators as “violent, insurrectionist mobs” and praised the 2,000 National Guard troops for their role in restoring order after hoards of protesters clashed with law enforcement in Los Angeles.

Here is a timeline of key events surrounding the immigration enforcement actions and ensuing protests in Los Angeles:

Friday, June 6:

Federal immigration enforcement efforts in Los Angeles began on Friday, June 6, with coordinated ICE raids across the city targeting migrants. These operations, which resulted in more than 100 arrests, focused on known areas of unlawful employment and activity, including the Fashion District and commercial hubs.

Among those arrested was 49-year-old Cuong Chanh Phan, an illegal immigrant from Vietnam with a criminal history that includes a conviction for second-degree murder. Phan was convicted of shooting up a high school graduation party after a dispute, killing an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old. Seven others were injured in the incident, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

One man has already been sent back to Mexico after being picked up at a Home Depot on Friday morning. During the demonstrations, David Huerta, president of SEIU California, a labor union, was arrested and charged with impeding a federal agent while protesting.

Saturday, June 7:

Trump deployed California National Guard troops to Los Angeles on Saturday following the chaotic standoff between protesters and federal immigration authorities. Photos from the scene in California captured protesters blocking streets, throwing bricks at law enforcement and setting cars ablaze.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom requested the administration to rescind the deployment, saying Trump is trying “to manufacture a crisis” and that the president is “hoping for chaos so he can justify more crackdowns, more fear, more control.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized California’s Democratic leadership, stating they had “completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens.”

She declared that the Trump administration maintains a zero-tolerance policy for criminal behavior and violence, especially when directed at law enforcement officers, and that such individuals “will be arrested and swiftly brought to justice.”

DHS released a statement on Saturday noting it took the LAPD two hours to respond to the Roybal Federal Building, despite multiple calls.

“Last night, over 1,000 rioters surrounded a federal law enforcement building and assaulted ICE law enforcement officers, slashed tires, defaced buildings, and taxpayer-funded property,” according to DHS. “Our ICE enforcement officers are facing a 413% increase in assaults against them. Disturbingly, in recent days, ICE officers’ family members have been dox[x]ed and targeted as well.”

Newsom, meanwhile, strongly condemned President Trump’s decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles without state consent, labeling the move as “purposefully inflammatory.”

“California – Don’t give Donald Trump what he wants,” Newsom wrote in a X post. “Speak up. Stay peaceful. Stay calm. Do not use violence and respect the law enforcement officers that are trying their best to keep the peace.”

Sunday, June 8:

On Sunday, rioters gathered downtown, including near the Metropolitan Detention Center, to protest ongoing immigration enforcement and the arrival of National Guard personnel.

Law enforcement agencies, including the LAPD and National Guard troops, employed crowd-control measures such as tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets to disperse protesters.

Newsom arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday evening to oversee the response to the anti-ICE riots and meet with state emergency officials.

“We’re here to keep the peace — not play into Trump’s political games,” Newsom wrote.

Rioters were seen targeting the LAPD headquarters on Sunday night as violent demonstrations continued.

The LAPD declared an “unlawful assembly” Sunday evening as protesters failed to disperse in the downtown area.

“Agitators have splintered into and through out [sic] the Downtown Area,” the LAPD’s Central Division wrote on X. “Residents, businesses and visitors to the Downtown Area should be alert and report any criminal activity. Officers are responding to several different locations to disperse crowds.”

Monday, June 9:

DHS on Monday called on California’s politicians to “call off their rioting mob,” asking why Newsom was supporting what the department called “foreign criminals.”

The post included a video that shows a masked, shirtless man holding a Mexican flag while standing on top of a vehicle covered in graffiti. A second vehicle is seen burning in the middle of a street as crowds of people gathered nearby.

Newsom continued to spar with Trump over the riots erupting in Los Angeles, calling the president “unhinged” on Monday. Newsom has peppered Trump with criticisms over federalizing the National Guard in a series of posts on X.

“We’re suing him,” Newsom added.

On Monday afternoon, Fox News learned that hundreds of Marines were mobilizing in Los Angeles. They will be tasked with protecting federal property and federal personnel, according to a senior defense official, and the deployment is open-ended.

The Marines will not be carrying out a law enforcement role, but it Is unclear what their use of force rules are if protesters throw things or spit at them.

The Marines are from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines at Twentynine Palms, California.

Moments before the deployment, Trump expressed optimism that the situation in Los Angeles was improving.

“I mean, I think we have it very well under control,” he told reporters. “I think it would have been a very bad situation. It was heading in the wrong direction. It’s now heading in the right direction.”

Newsom expressed his outrage at the possibility of the presence of Marines, writing on X, “U.S. Marines have served honorably across multiple wars in defense of democracy. They are heroes. They shouldn’t be deployed on American soil facing their own countrymen to fulfill the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial President. This is un-American.”

The California governor initially said that the information they have is that Marines are not being deployed, but moving “from one base to another base.”

“From our understanding, this is moving Marines from one base to another base,” Newsom wrote in a statement on X. “At this time, the information we have is that Marines are not being deployed (there is a difference between that and being mobilized),” he continued.

“The level of escalation is completely unwarranted, uncalled for, and unprecedented — mobilizing the best in class branch of the U.S. military against its own citizens,” Newsom said.

Weight-loss drugs continue to grow in popularity, with market researchers predicting that global demand for the medications could reach $150 billion by 2035.

GLP-1 agonists — including semaglutides like Ozempic and Wegovy and tirzepatides like Mounjaro and Zepbound — are intended to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Recent studies, however, have linked these medications to additional benefits, such as a reduction in heart disease and dementia risk, as doctors recommend them to a growing number of patients.

Even so, recent Yale research found that only 3% of eligible adults received a prescription.

Who should take weight-loss drugs?

Most adults who have obesity are good candidates for these medications, according to Dr. John Anderson, an internal medicine physician and diabetes specialist at the Frist Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee.

“However, the most important group that we really want to address are the patients who have obesity alongside other comorbid conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea and significant osteoarthritis,” Anderson, who is also a board member of the Diabetes Leadership Council, told Fox News Digital.

“Anyone who wants to lose weight who is obese is a good candidate, but from a medical standpoint, we’re most concerned about this higher-risk patient population.”

STUDY DIRECTLY COMPARES ZEPBOUND AND WEGOVY FOR WEIGHT-LOSS RESULTS

To qualify for a weight-loss drug, the patient should first work with a physician to make lifestyle changes in the areas of diet, exercise, sleep and stress management, according to Dr. Michael Aziz, a board-certified internist and regenerative medicine specialist based in New York City.

“A healthy, balanced diet with plenty of vegetables and low-sugar fruits should be the first step in weight loss,” he told Fox News Digital.

“But some people, despite their best efforts, can’t lose weight. This could be related to injuries that prevent them from working out or a slow metabolism.”

“By treating obesity earlier, we can prevent disease progression.”

Insurance pays for weight-loss medications if the patient’s body mass index is over 27, according to Aziz.

(Patients are considered overweight if they have a BMI of 25 to 29.9, and are considered obese if the number is greater than 30, according to the National Institutes of Health.)

Beyond the high-risk groups, Anderson said he’d like to see these medications made “available and affordable” for a vast majority of patients impacted by obesity.

“By treating obesity earlier, we can prevent disease progression,” he said. “GLP-1s have been shown to reduce progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes by 94%, and significantly reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events.”

“Obesity is connected to 200 comorbidities, including heart disease, kidney disease and 40% of all cancers, which is why addressing the disease early is key.”

Patients don’t have to be diabetic to benefit from GLP-1 medications for weight loss, according to Dr. Wiljon Beltre, a board-certified bariatric and metabolic surgeon and the founder of Beltre Bariatrics in Orlando, Florida.

“I also agree that patients with lower levels of obesity (BMI lower than 30) can derive great benefits from these medications,” he told Fox News Digital.

“In fact, these patients can turn out to be excellent candidates for GLP-1s, since they seem to lose weight faster and notice a change almost immediately.”

Benefits beyond obesity and diabetes

Several ongoing studies are exploring the use of weight-loss medications to treat a range of conditions, including alcoholism and addiction, Alzheimer’s and dementia, liver disease, and more, according to Anderson.

“The way these medications work is by slowing stomach emptying so that you feel fuller longer, but they also have feedback to the appetite center of hypothalamus in the brain, which turns off the food noise,” he said.

“The most important group that we really want to address are the patients who have obesity alongside other comorbid conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea and significant osteoarthritis,” a doctor told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

“Experts across the country are finding that it also seems to reduce cravings for alcohol in patients — that their reward center is turning off the desire for alcohol.”

More research is needed to confirm this effect, but Anderson said these drugs could potentially be “life-changing” for those battling addiction.

Aziz noted that GLP-1 drugs have also been shown to reduce the risk of both heart attacks and stroke by 20%.

“They also help to reverse a fatty liver and improve sleep apnea,” he added.

Risks and limitations

Diabetes and obesity medications are widely known to cause gastrointestinal issues in some patients — primarily nausea, with some reporting vomiting, constipation and diarrhea.

“Most of those occur when doing dose escalation, and the vast majority are able to get through that,” Anderson said. “This typically occurs early in therapy and tapers off over time.”

Patients with a family history of medullary thyroid cancer or pancreatitis should avoid these medications, according to experts. Pregnant women are also advised against taking them.

Some patients have also reported a loss of muscle mass, hair thinning or shedding, mood changes and other unwanted outcomes.

“People should understand that GLP-1 is not a magic solution to weight loss, but one leg of a three-legged stool — it needs to be combined with healthy eating habits and exercise,” said Beltre.

It’s also important for patients to understand that they cannot take these medications forever, the doctor noted.

Many doctors, however, report that their patients’ benefits outweigh the potential side effects.

“Importantly, I’m seeing many patients now able to participate in activities for the first time in many years following significant weight loss — ice skating, going on walks, canceling knee replacements and dropping blood pressure medications,” Anderson noted.

A graduate student in Sweden has been learning about Vikings through an unusual method: He’s done it by sailing like one.

Archaeologist Greer Jarrett, a doctoral student at Lund University, has navigated over 3,000 miles along historical Viking trade routes in the Arctic Ocean.

With the help of his team, the academic has sailed the seas with a reconstructed sailing boat that would have been used by Vikings 1,200 years ago.

So what has his research uncovered so far? Among other things, Jarrett has identified four possible Viking harbors along the coast of Norway.

Jarrett’s research suggests that Vikings ventured farther from Scandinavia than previously thought and used decentralized port networks during their journeys, according to a press release published by Lund University.

“In his latest study, he has found evidence of a decentralized network of ports, located on islands and peninsulas, which probably played a central role in trade and travel in the Viking era,” the statement added.

Due to the type of boats Vikings used, Jarrett said that they likely used small, easily accessible harbors quite often.

“With this type of boat, it has to be easy to get in and out of the harbor in all possible wind conditions. There must be several routes in and out.”

The archaeologist also noted that, while Viking historians know where trade journeys generally started and ended, knowledge about the more informal stops is scant.

Jarrett said his research is focused on “what happened on the journeys between these major trading centers.”

“My hypothesis is that this decentralized network of ports, located on small islands and peninsulas, was central to making trade efficient during the Viking Age,” he explained.

“Our hands really suffered. At that point, I realized just how crucial it is to have a good crew.”

He also ran into a few challenges during his three-year journey.

In one instance, while 15 miles out to sea, the boat’s mast spar broke and sent the mainsail toppling down.

“We had to lash two oars together to hold the sail, and hope that it would hold,” the student recalled. “We made it back to the harbor safely, but then we had to spend several days repairing the boat before we could sail again.”

“On another trip, a minke whale suddenly surfaced and flapped its huge tail fin just meters from the boat.”

Underwater currents and downslope winds also made it difficult for him to navigate near land. Jarrett needed to develop “mental maps” to figure out where to go, as the Vikings did.

But he was also pleasantly surprised by other aspects of the journey. Jarrett found that the primitive boats are stable, even without a deep keel, the release indicated.

“You need a boat that can withstand all kinds of weather conditions,” he said. “But if you don’t have a crew that can cooperate and put up with each other for long periods, these journeys would probably be impossible.”

“The cold in [Norway’s] Lofoten Islands was a challenge,” Jarrett said. “Our hands really suffered. At that point, I realized just how crucial it is to have a good crew.”

As European cities grapple with overtourism, many have implemented tax hikes on tourists in an effort to curb the throngs of visitors.

Norway is the latest European country to introduce a tourist tax, allowing certain cities to introduce a 3% tax on overnight stays in “areas particularly affected by tourism,” Euronews reported.

Officials passed the levy this past Thursday and will be allowed to adjust the tax percentage based on season.

Similar to what’s occurred in other vacation destinations, the funds will help tourist infrastructure such as public bathroom facilities and parking areas.

Top summer attractions for tourists are places for hiking, places to experience nature such as fjords and mountains, water activities, and beach visits, according to Visit Norway’s official site.

Many tourists are drawn to Norway to witness the Northern Lights.

Cecilie Myrseth, the minister of trade and industry in Norway, noted the “historic agreement” in a Facebook post.

“The scheme is voluntary and it applies to areas that have a particularly large [presence] of tourists. The tourism industry is also the future of Norway,” Myrseth wrote.

It’s “an industry that creates housing, happiness, good experiences, value creation and important jobs all over the country,” she added.

“If the industry wants to grow, we depend on trust locally. We ensure that with this agreement.”

President Donald Trump on Monday confirmed he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding Iran and the ongoing negotiations.

In speaking to reporters after the call he said he reiterated to Netanyahu Washington’s push to make a deal to avoid direct conflict.

“We’re trying to make a deal so that there’s no destruction and death. And we’ve told them that, and I’ve told them that, and I hope that’s the way it works out,” Trump said. “But it might not work out that way.

“We’ll soon find out,” he added.

Trump claimed that Iran had already returned a counter-proposal to the U.S. following its rejection of a proposal given to them last week, though the president said “it’s just not acceptable” and that more negotiations are needed, particularly regarding enrichment-related demands.

The call came after the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog, which is charged with monitoring all nations’ nuclear programs, warned on Monday that it cannot verify whether Tehran’s program is “entirely peaceful” despite the regime’s claims.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, on Monday issued a warning statement that the agency has not only long been barred access to old and new nuclear sites, but that Iran has scrubbed locations in an apparent move to cover up its activities.

In 2020, the IAEA found man-made particles of enriched uranium at three sites, including Varamin, Marivan and Turquzabad. The locations were previously utilized in Iran’s nuclear program and gave the agency credence to believe Tehran had once again turned to deadly nuclear ambitions.

“Since then, we have been seeking explanations and clarifications from Iran for the presence of these uranium particles, including through a number of high-level meetings and consultations in which I have been personally involved,” Grossi said. “Unfortunately, Iran has repeatedly either not answered, or not provided technically credible answers to, the Agency’s questions.

“It has also sought to sanitize the locations, which has impeded Agency verification activities,” he added.

Grossi, who confirmed during an April trip to Washington, D.C. that the IAEA has not been involved in nuclear negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, said on Monday that he has been working “closely and intensively” with both parties in “support of their bilateral negotiation[s].”

The warning comes after the IAEA in a report late last month, also confirmed that Iran had drastically increased its stockpile of near-weapons-grade enriched uranium by nearly 35% in three months.

In February, the IAEA assessed that Tehran possessed 274.8 kilograms (605.8 pounds) worth of uranium enriched to 60%, but on May 17th it found Iran now has some 408.6 kilograms (900.8 pounds) – meaning the regime is just a technical step away from being able to make up to 10 nuclear warheads.

Last week, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei came out in strong opposition to a U.S. proposal submitted to Tehran to end its nuclear program, though it remains unclear what details were included in the document, including on enrichment capabilities, and on Sunday, Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf claimed the proposal didn’t include any sanction relief.

The White House has remained tight-lipped about what was included in the document, though according to some reporting, President Donald Trump gave Iran until June 11 to reach a deal with the U.S., though Fox News Digital could not independently verify these claims.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that “The U.S. proposal is not acceptable to us. It was not the result of previous rounds of negotiations.”

“We will present our own proposal to the other side via Oman after it is finalized. This proposal is reasonable, logical, and balanced,” Baghaei reportedly said.

Some reporting has also suggested Iran might submit their proposal as soon as June 10, though the Iranian UN mission in the U.S. would not comment on or confirm these claims.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) just announced a major update. Starting this summer, Americans with a “My Social Security” account will be able to access their digital Social Security number (SSN) online. The goal is to simplify access, reduce paper card replacements and improve data protection.

But with convenience comes new cybersecurity concerns. Here’s how the digital SSN works, why it’s being introduced now and the steps you should take to protect your SSN from identity theft both online and offline.

What is the digital SSN? New Social Security feature explained

The SSA is introducing secure digital access to your Social Security number through the “My Social Security” portal. If you forget your SSN, misplace your card or need to share your number for non-SSA purposes (such as job applications or financial services), you’ll be able to view your number online from a mobile device.

“This enhancement will provide individuals…a simple solution allowing them to securely view their SSN online,” said the SSA. This update eliminates the need for mail delays or in-person visits to your local SSA office.

Why the SSA is releasing digital SSNs in 2025

There are a few big reasons the SSA is rolling this out now:

Aging physical cards: The SSA estimates there are 47 different versions of the Social Security card still in circulation. Many of them were issued before 1983 and lack basic security features, making them easier to forge or misuse.
Rising identity theft risks: Your SSN is one of the most sensitive identifiers tied to your name. When cards are lost, stolen or handled carelessly, it creates opportunities for identity theft, fraud and account takeovers.
Demand for digital access: More Americans now expect to access government services from their phones or computers. Long lines at SSA offices and delays in mail processing have made it harder for people to get help quickly. A digital SSN provides faster, safer and more convenient access to your number when you need it.

Digital SSN launch date: When you can access it

The digital SSN option will be available in early summer 2025. If you already have a “My Social Security” account, you’ll be able to access the feature once it rolls out.

How to access your digital Social Security number online

You’ll need a “My Social Security” account to use the digital SSN features. Here’s how to get started:

1) Visit the SSA’s account portal: Go to ssa.gov/myaccount and click “Create an Account.”

2) Verify your identity: You’ll be asked to provide your name, birthdate, SSN and address. The SSA may use a third-party identity verification service and ask questions based on your credit report.

3) Choose a username and password: Use a strong, unique password and set up two-factor authentication with your phone number or an authenticator app. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

4) Log in and check your dashboard: Once the digital SSN feature launches, you’ll be able to view your number securely from your account on a mobile device or computer.

Even with digital access making your SSN more convenient, it’s still one of the most sensitive pieces of personal information you own. If your SSN falls into the wrong hands, it can lead to identity theft, credit fraud and even tax return scams. Here are the best ways to protect it:

1) Use a strong password for your SSA account: Create a unique, complex password for your “My Social Security” account and enable two-factor authentication. This ensures that even if someone guesses your password, they won’t be able to log in without a second verification step. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords. 2) Avoid public Wi-Fi when accessing your SSN: If you’re checking your SSA account, avoid doing so over unsecured networks like public Wi-Fi. 6) Request an IRS Identity Protection PIN: Prevent fraudulent tax filings using your SSN by setting up an Identity Protection PIN with the IRS. This six-digit number adds another layer of protection during tax season.

7) Review your Social Security earnings record: Log in to your “My Social Security” account regularly to review your earnings history and benefits. This helps ensure your information hasn’t been altered or compromised.

Maine proposes ban on small hotel shampoo bottles to reduce plastic waste

A bill in Maine would mandate hotels to forgo small bottles containing “single-use plastic containers” in “lodging establishments” — banning single-size hotel shampoo offerings and other toiletries.

The enforcement bill is advancing in the Pine Tree State’s legislature in the hopes of reducing waste.

“This bill prohibits lodging establishments from providing personal health or beauty products in small single-use plastic containers to persons staying in a lodging establishment or within bathrooms shared by the public and guests of the lodging establishment,” reads bill LD 1928’s summary.

Hotels, motels, resorts, bed and breakfasts, inns, time-share properties, short-term rentals and vacation rentals are listed as lodging establishments.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2030, lodging establishments with more than 50 rooms will not be able to provide toiletry bottles under 6 ounces.

In 2032, the ban will expand to lodging establishments with fewer than 50 rooms.

For hotels that do not comply, a civil violation will be issued with a $100 fine.

While the bill says lodging establishments cannot provide single-use toiletries, it is unclear if establishments can still sell them to travelers.

Some large hotels have already begun making adjustments.

“We have long been focused on our residential amenities program, switching from small toiletry bottles to larger, pump-topped bottles as part of our commitment to reduce plastic waste,” a Marriott Hotels spokesperson previously told FOX Business.

A Hilton spokesperson previously told FOX Business, “As of 2023, Hilton properties were required to transition to full-size shampoo, conditioner and soap amenities, eliminating single-use miniature bottles and reducing disposed bars of soap.”

Maine is not the first state to tackle a ban on hotel toiletry bottles.

New York, California and Illinois all have similar laws in place — while Washington’s ban will take effect in 2027.

Rare Shem Tov Bible returns to Israel after selling for nearly $7 million at auction

Israeli officials recently put a unique 14th-century Bible on display just a year after it was bought for a seven-figure sum.

The National Library of Israel announced its display of the Shem Tov Bible in a recent press release. The library began exhibiting the centuries-old book on loan from its owner on May 8.

The Jewish book, which has been called a “monumental work of biblical, artistic, Masoretic and kabbalistic scholarship,” dates back to medieval Spain. It was sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $6.9 million in 2024, a representative confirmed to Fox News Digital.

The Bible was created by a Kabbalist rabbi named Shem Tov ben Abraham Ibn Gaon, who completed it in 1312 in Spain. After finishing the book, he took it on a two-year-long journey to modern-day Israel.

He studied Judaism for the rest of his life until his death in 1330. The Bible soon began changing hands, but it remained in the Middle East before being moved to North Africa in the 17th century.

“In the 17th century, it moved to North Africa where mystical powers were attributed to it, including being brought to women in childbirth to assure an easy labor,” the press release noted.

Pictures of the medieval Bible show intricate artwork that was inspired by the Islamic and Christian art of its day.

“These motifs were inspired by the Islamic and Christian visual languages of the period, adapted to the long-standing Jewish tradition of beautifying ritual objects.”

“Its design features include arcades, gothic arches, birds and beasts, gilded frames surrounding biblical verses, illuminated marginal markers, and more,” the statement explained.

“These motifs were inspired by the Islamic and Christian visual languages of the period, adapted to the long-standing Jewish tradition of beautifying ritual objects.”

Sallai Meridor, chairman of the National Library of Israel, called the display of the manuscript “profoundly significant.”

“Having traveled from Spain to Jerusalem, Baghdad, Tripoli, London and Geneva, the Shem Tov Bible has come full circle and is now back home, returning to the very place where Rabbi Shem Tov ben Abraham Ibn Gaon lived and intended for it to be, in the land of Israel, and now in Jerusalem,” the official said.

Meridor also thanked the owners of the Bible, the Herenstein family, who in turn said the book “characterized the best of medieval Jewish bookmaking.”

The family’s statement read, “We are delighted to know that the Shem Tov Bible is incorporated into the Library’s permanent exhibition of its greatest treasures, and equally delighted that the manuscript will be digitized to the highest standard, making it available worldwide, for study, research or to simply enjoy its beauty.”

National Library of Israel curator Chaim Neria also noted that the Bible allows scholars to study Jewish traditions “that have all but vanished from the historical record.”

“A significant aspect of the codex is its observance of the Sefer Tagei, a traditional guide outlining the scribal practices required for writing sacred texts,” the historian said.

Neria added, “The surrounding notations reference earlier, now-lost documents, specifically the Hilleli Codex of 600 CE.”

The Shem Tov Bible is one of many recently publicized Jewish historical finds in the last year.

Last fall, the 16th-century Di Gara text was returned to a Jewish seminary after mysteriously ending up on an online marketplace.

Earlier this year, a 1,600-year-old mikveh was uncovered in Italy – making it the oldest of its kind in Europe.
