Wildfire preparedness not compromised by Forest Service exits, USDA head says

0

The Trump administration is prepared for what could be a “significant fire season,” despite thousands of Forest Service employees departing under Trump’s deferred resignation offer, according to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins.

“It did not compromise and will not compromise at all, 1%, what needs to be done to make sure that we are ready,” Rollins told Fox News Digital Friday.

More than 4,000 U.S. Forest Service employees voluntarily resigned under buyouts offered by the Trump administration, according to a POLITICO report.

Wildland firefighters were largely exempt from the buyouts and a federal hiring freeze, but blue state leaders say President Donald Trump‘s slash-and-burn approach cuts key support staff.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burnum signed a joint memo in May instructing the Forest Service to examine the impact of “voluntary departures” on the firefighting workforce and plan to redeploy non-fire staff to support frontline firefighters when needed. SEN. SCHIFF URGES TRUMP ADMIN TO EXCLUDE FIREFIGHTERS FROM FEDERAL HIRING FREEZE

The reality is that Trump has decimated the U.S. Forest Service,” Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said in a May press conference. “Nearly every single Forest Service employee supports fire operations in some capacity.”

Many of the workers who departed held Red Cards, meaning they have special training to either fight fires or “provide essential frontline support to the firefighting crews,” Sen. Jeff Merkley, a Democrat from Oregon, said.

But Rollins said the Biden administration wasted taxpayer funds on unsustainable and irresponsible hiring of people who “really had no job description.”

“That was in the — not hundreds — in the thousands of hirings that went on just in the Forest Service in the last administration,” she said, adding that the service is becoming “more lean” but no less effective.

LA MAYOR KAREN BASS ACCUSED OF DELETING TEXTS IN WAKE OF WILDFIRE DISASTER

Rollins and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum signed a memo on May 20 signaling the Trump administration’s wildfire response strategy. It calls for the elimination of barriers and “unnecessary procedures” to ensure a rapid response when wildfires threaten life and property.

The memo also directs the Forest Service to examine the impact of “voluntary departures” on the firefighting workforce and propose a plan to “remedy critical vacancies.”

Non-fire staff should also be deployed to support frontline firefighters as wildfire activity increases, allowing for a “more robust and more intentional and more effective force as we move into this season,” Rollins said.

“But we are not going to waste taxpayer dollars the way that we’ve seen happen in the past,” she said.

Wildfires have already scorched more than one million acres across the country so far this year, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. The center’s outlook shows higher temperatures and drier conditions than typical across much of the West this summer.

“Our prayer is that it won’t actually happen, that it will be lighter than usual, but indicators are showing that it actually may be a heavy fire season,” Rollins said.

She added she’s confident Americans will see “an unprecedented level of coordination” among federal, state and local governments as the summer progresses.

“There is zero compromising [on] having the most prepared, most effective [firefighters],” Rollins said. “And we’ll do everything possible to ensure that they have every tool they need to be successful this season.”

Hidden dangers of common medications and supplements causing liver damage

0

As cases of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) are on the rise, experts are warning of the hidden dangers associated with some common medications and supplements.

Statistics show that DILI, also known as toxic hepatitis or hepatotoxicity — which is known to be a significant cause of acute liver failure — has been growing in Western countries since the 1960s.

Around one-fifth of the total population who are prescribed medications will experience DILI, according to recent research published in the journal Toxicology Reports.

COMMON DAILY VITAMIN COULD SLOW BIOLOGICAL AGING, MAJOR STUDY SUGGESTS

Potential triggers of liver injury include herbal products, dietary supplements and medications, the study found.

Those with pre-existing liver conditions and nutritional deficiencies are at a higher risk, as are pregnant women.

How drugs can harm the liver

One of the liver’s main functions is to break down substances taken orally, including supplements and medications, according to the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).

For some people, the process of metabolizing these substances can be slower, increasing the risk of liver damage.

COLORECTAL CANCER RISK REDUCED BY THIS COMMON VITAMIN, STUDY SUGGESTS

Even medications that have been tested for safety and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can potentially cause liver injury in rare cases, stated the ACG.

Common symptoms of liver disease include nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, generalized itching, dark urine and jaundice, although some people may notice no signs, per the above source.

ALCOHOL DRIVES UP LIVER TRANSPLANT DEMAND IN YOUNG PEOPLE

Most common medications that cause DILI

The recent study in Toxicology Reports identified several drugs that are most likely to cause liver injury.

  • Paracetamol (acetaminophen), a common over-the-counter pain reliever
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are often used to treat headaches, fever and chronic inflammatory disorders
  • Aspirin, a common over-the-counter medication used as a fever-reducer, pain reliever and blood thinner
  • Nimesulide, an NSAID used to relieve pain and reduce fever
  • Methotrexate, an antimetabolite medication that is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lymphoma, leukemia and other cancers
  • Corticosteroids, which are used to treat conditions involving inflammation or overactive immune systems
  • Isoniazid, a first-line treatment for tuberculosis
  • Tetracyclines, a class of antibiotics that treat multiple types of bacterial infections
  • Halothane, which is used as a general anaesthetic during surgical procedures

Supplements linked to liver damage

Medications aren’t the only agents that can cause drug-induced liver injuries.

Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, spoke with Fox News Digital about the risks of herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) affecting the liver.

“The biggest problem with herbal supplements is that the amount you are taking of active chemicals isn’t strictly regulated, so you don’t know exactly what you are getting.”

“The biggest problem with herbal supplements is that the amount you are taking of active chemicals isn’t strictly regulated, so you don’t know exactly what you are getting,” he said.

“And since several of the supplements are metabolized through the liver, there is now an increasing incidence of liver toxicity in users.”

Cases of DILI linked to herbal or dietary supplements have nearly tripled between 2004 and 2014, according to a 2024 study published in JAMA Network Open.

The researchers identified the following most commonly used botanical products known for potential liver toxicity.

  • Turmeric, a common spice added to foods
  • Green tea
  • Ashwagandha, an herb used for stress and anxiety
  • Garcinia cambogia, a popular weight-loss supplement
  • Red yeast rice, which is said to help lower cholesterol levels
  • Black cohosh, a dietary supplement used to relieve menopause symptoms

It is estimated that at least 15.6 million U.S. adults have used at least one of these six botanical products within the past 30 days.

COMMON SUPPLEMENT COULD HELP YOU LIVE LONGER, RESEARCH SUGGESTS

“The most commonly implicated botanical products in the DILIN (Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network) include turmeric, kratom, green tea extract and Garcinia cambogia, with potentially severe and even fatal liver injury,” the study stated.

Drug-induced liver injury caused by HDS can be severe or even fatal, leading to death or liver transplantation, the researchers noted.

Fox News’ Siegel also warned against the potential liver-related risks of some of these named supplements.

“Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and may be useful in small doses, but can be toxic in large doses,” he cautioned.

“Garcinia cambogia is very popular, especially as a weight-loss agent, but there is no real evidence that it actually works, and there is no reason to take it, especially with the new GLP-1 drugs.”

While red yeast rice has cholesterol-lowering statin-type properties, Siegel cautioned that the amount of active chemicals isn’t as strictly regulated as approved medications.

“Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory and may be useful in small doses, but can be toxic in large doses.”

“I find it useful in some patients who are reluctant to start statins and are looking for a more natural alternative, but I must strictly monitor the amount taken and the effect on the liver,” he said.

Regarding green tea, Siegel noted that it does have antioxidant properties and can be useful to consume as a beverage (though it has a lot of caffeine) — “but there is no reason whatsoever to take more of it in an extract, where it can be toxic.”

The FDA states on its website that it does regulate dietary supplement products and dietary ingredients, but under “a different set of regulations than those covering ‘conventional’ foods and drug products.”

“Manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded,” the agency says. “That means that these firms are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they meet all the requirements of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act as amended by DSHEA and FDA regulations.”

China accuses Hegseth of espousing ‘Cold War mentality’ for labeling country as a threat: ‘Vilified’

0

China criticized U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Sunday for his “vilified” remarks “filled with provocations” in which he said the Asian country poses a legitimate threat in the Indo-Pacific.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Hegseth touted a “Cold War mentality” when he delivered his speech on Saturday at the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore.

“Hegseth deliberately ignored the call for peace and development by countries in the region, and instead touted the Cold War mentality for bloc confrontation, vilified China with defamatory allegations, and falsely called China a ‘threat,'” a spokesperson for the ministry said in a statement.

“The remarks were filled with provocations and intended to sow discord,” the statement continued. “China deplores and firmly opposes them and has protested strongly to the U.S. No country in the world deserves to be called a hegemonic power other than the US itself, which is also the primary factor undermining the peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific.”

HEGSETH SAYS US WILL BOLSTER DEFENSES OVERSEAS TO SUPPORT INDO-PACIFIC ALLIES AGAINST CHINA

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Hegseth touted a “Cold War mentality” when he delivered his speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore. (AP)

On Saturday, Hegseth said the U.S. will bolster its defenses overseas to counter what the Pentagon views as rapidly developing threats by China, particularly toward Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own.

The Chinese army “is rehearsing for the real deal,” Hegseth said. “We are not going to sugarcoat it — the threat China poses is real. And it could be imminent.”

The Pentagon chief said China is no longer building up its military forces to take Taiwan, but it is “actively training for it, every day.”

Addressing the dispute over Taiwan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in its statement that the matter is China’s internal affair and that the U.S. should “never play with fire.”

“No country is in a position to interfere,” the statement said. “The US should never imagine it could use the Taiwan question as leverage against China. The US must never play with fire on this question. China urges the US to fully abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués, and stop supporting and emboldening the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”

The statement also accused the U.S. of deploying offensive weaponry in the South China Sea and “stoking flames and creating tensions” in the Asia-Pacific, which it said was “turning the region into a powder keg and making countries in the region deeply concerned.”

In the South China Sea, the statement said there “has never been any problem with regard to freedom of navigation and overflight there.”

“China has always been committed to working with countries concerned to properly handle differences through dialogue and consultation, while safeguarding China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in accordance with laws and regulations,” the spokesperson said. “It is the U.S. that is the primary factor hurting the peace and stability in the South China Sea.”

The statement concluded: “China urges the U.S. to fully respect the efforts of countries in the region to maintain peace and stability, stop deliberately destroying the peaceful and stable environment cherished by the region, and stop inciting conflict and confrontation and escalating tensions in the region.”

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang also called Hegseth’s comments a provocation that distorted China’s policy positions.

While Hegseth vowed to boost U.S. defenses overseas to counter any possible threat from China, the defense secretary insisted that allies in the Indo-Pacific also contribute more to their own defense.

“We ask, and indeed we insist, that our allies and partners do their part on defense,” he said on Saturday. “Sometimes that means having uncomfortable and tough conversations.”

The U.S. and China reached a deal last month to cut tariffs on each down to 115% for 90 days to allow time for negotiators from both sides to come to a more substantive agreement — U.S. tariffs on China were reduced from 145% to 30% and China’s taxes on the U.S. were slashed from 125% to 10%.

But Trump said in a social media post on Friday that he would no longer be “nice” with China when it comes to trade and accused Beijing of breaking an unspecified agreement with the U.S.

Baggage policy ‘rarely enforced’ has flight passenger fuming after recent incident

0

A flight passenger who boarded a late-night flight out of Atlanta, Georgia, shared frustrations about the baggage-related actions of some fellow flyers.

Posting in the “r/delta” Reddit forum with the title, “Another rant about carry-ons and personal items,” the user wrote to others, “Seriously, why have a ‘rule’ about one carry-on and one personal item when it’s rarely enforced.”

The user added, “I watch[ed] a person with two, what I would call, large roll bags and no personal items put both rollers in an overhead bin while an FA [flight attendant] watched him do it.”

The user then added, “[Since] I paid to check my bag, I figured I’d put my backpack above my seat and the same FA [then] tells me that I can’t do that.”

The person continued, “I mention to the FA that we just watched a person put two rollers in the overhead and why is that OK. The FA ignores me, moves on.”

The user said the flight attendant then put the bag under the seat in front.

Reddit users took to the comments section to speculate about the actions of the traveler with two suitcases, plus bag policy habits.

“Just from a personal experience, I once was asked about my two roller bags and my backpack as I was going to my seat,” said one user.

“I handle my mom’s luggage when she gets on a plane because she can’t. [So] it is very possible [this person was] doing the same.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t be trying to police others and [instead] should put your personal item under the seat in front of you where it [belongs],” one snarky user commented. (iStock)

Another user pointed out other issues: “Let’s talk about the real problem: baggage fees. This is why everyone uses a carry-on now. Which in turn makes boarding and deplaning take waaaay longer.”

Said yet another person, “Airlines need to start allowing a more generous checked baggage policy and start charging for carry-on luggage. That would solve several problems.”

A former flight attendant and etiquette expert told Fox News Digital the flight attendant in question might have been in the wrong.  (iStock)

“I’m [a member of a] flight crew who frequently travels as a passenger on commercial airliners,” claimed one user.

The person continued, “Rule of thumb is that if I’m not in uniform, I’m not allowed to bring more than the standard bag allowance for any passenger, whether crew or not.”

“If the flight is not full, oftentimes this rule is overlooked.”

Said another person on Reddit, “If I only have one item, that’s my carry-on regardless of size, and I’m definitely putting it in the overhead and not under the seat in front of me.”

Former flight attendant and etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore of Florida told Fox News Digital the flight attendant may have been in the wrong in the case in question.

“I’m not sure why this passenger was not allowed to put her backpack in the overhead bin. That’s perfectly acceptable unless the bins are full,” said Whitmore.

Regular exercise after colon cancer treatment significantly improves survival rates

0

Exercising regularly in the three years after treatment for a common cancer could significantly improve survival rates, an international study has revealed.

In the research, a total of 889 colon cancer patients who had undergone surgery and had also received chemotherapy were divided into two groups.

One group was enrolled in a structured group exercise program for a three-year period and a second group received educational health materials, according to a study press release.

SIMPLE DIETARY CHANGE COULD LOWER YOUR RISK OF COLON CANCER, STUDY SAYS

Led by coaches, the exercise group was permitted to choose their own type of moderate-intensity exercise, such as walking or pickleball. The overall goal was to add 2 ½ hours of activity per week.

At the eight-year mark, the participants in the exercise group were 28% less likely to have a recurrence of colon cancer or emergence of new cancers, and had a 37% higher overall survival rate.

“Our findings show that exercise is no longer just a quality-of-life intervention for cancer patients that can be offered when and where possible,” said study co-chair Dr. Kerry Courneya, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Alberta and Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity and Cancer, in the release.

“It is a treatment for colon cancer that must be made available to all patients.”

TERMINAL COLON CANCER PATIENT SAVED BY BREAKTHROUGH TREATMENT

One of the patients in the study, Terri Swain-Collins, was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2021.

After she underwent surgery and chemo, she was enrolled in the clinical trial and was assigned to the exercise group. Swain-Collins worked closely with a physiotherapist to create a fitness regimen that worked for her.

“It is a treatment for colon cancer that must be made available to all patients.”

“One of the biggest benefits was having a semi-structured routine that works for my lifestyle with someone to hold me accountable,” she said in the release.

“Simply being told to exercise by a physician wouldn’t have been enough to get me to where I am today; having someone walk alongside me, guide me and check in regularly was what truly made it possible.”

Three years later, Swain-Collins is still walking regularly and is cancer-free.

“The next step is to put this into practice,” said study co-chair Dr. Chris Booth, medical oncologist at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and professor of oncology at Queen’s University, in the release.

“That means health systems will need to invest in behavior support programs as part of standard care.”

Implementing exercise as an anti-cancer tool could be “remarkably cost-effective compared to many new cancer drugs,” Booth noted.

The study did find, however, that patients in the exercise group were more likely to develop muscle strains or injuries (18.5%) than the non-exercisers (11.5%).

Ravi Kathuria – Noted Spiritual Author & Coach – Reveals Why Religion and Spirituality are Completely Distinct. People Can Pursue Spirituality With or Without Religion

Ravi Kathuria - Noted Spiritual Author & Coach – Reveals Why Religion and Spirituality are Completely Distinct. People Can Pursue Spirituality With or Without Religion 32

Spirituality can only be non-religious. Spirituality does not care which religion one follows or if one is an atheist. Spirituality is all inclusive. It is accessible to everyone regardless of caste, creed, religious beliefs, age, status, gender, or sexual orientation. No judgments. No preconditions.

Houston, Texas, June 1, 2025, In a world where the lines between religion and spirituality often blur, Ravi Kathuria emerges as a guiding light. A renowned spiritual author and coach, he invites us all to explore the deeper essence of existence beyond traditional beliefs. With his insights, one can unravel the intricate tapestry that differentiates religion from spirituality—a distinction vital for personal growth in today’s fast-paced society.

Imagine having an inner dialogue about life’s most significant questions without being confined by dogmas or doctrines. This is precisely what Ravi advocates: a journey toward the understanding that spirituality transcends religious boundaries. Whether one identifies with a faith or stands firmly as an atheist, there’s profound wisdom waiting for everyone on this path of enlightenment and self-realization.

Religion and spirituality often intertwine, yet they serve different purposes. Religion is a structured system with doctrines, rituals, and community practices. It provides guidelines for followers to adhere to a specific belief system.

Spirituality, on the other hand, is inherently personal and fluid. It focuses on individual experiences of transcendence and inner peace. This journey does not require adherence to any particular dogma or institution.

While religion can offer comfort in times of distress, it may also create divisions among people based on beliefs or interpretations. Spirituality transcends these boundaries; it is an inclusive path open to all individuals regardless of their backgrounds.

Spirituality emphasizes connection and union — both within ourselves and with the Universe all around. In this way, one’s spiritual journey becomes less about conformity and more about authentic self-discovery. In his book, “Happy Soul. Hungry Mind.” Ravi uses a capital “U” in Universe as he declares, “God is the Universe. The Universe itself is God!” Union with the Infinite Universe is union with the Infinite God.

The role of religion in society:

Religion has played a pivotal role in shaping societies throughout history. It often serves as a moral compass, guiding individuals on what is considered right and wrong. Many find comfort and hope through the rituals and beliefs that religion offers.

Communities bond over shared faith practices, creating social networks that promote support during challenging times. These congregations can foster a sense of belonging, giving people a space to connect with others who share similar values.

However, religion can also lead to division. While it unites some, it has historically discriminated against different faiths or lifestyles. This duality highlights its complex influence on societal norms.

Through its teachings, religion encourages individuals to seek purpose beyond material existence. Yet sometimes, dogmas may overshadow the essence of spiritual exploration. The challenge lies in navigating these waters while remaining open-minded about varying beliefs and experiences around spirituality.

The concept of spirituality as a personal journey:

Spirituality is a deeply personal journey from one’s mind to one’s soul. It begins with quieting the “hungry mind” and ends with the experience of one’s life-force. That experience is the highest experience of life—where one is free from finite limitations and connects with the Infinite Self!

Many find that spirituality unfolds in quiet moments—during meditation, nature walks, or simply sitting in silence. These experiences, where the mind quiets downs, allow one to connect with an inner peace that exists unaffected and undiminished by modern-day external chaos.

Spirituality is in everyone’s DNA from birth. It exists naturally. That is precisely why spirituality is not subject to beliefs. What the mind believes has no impact on a human being’s ability to connect with their inner-peace. Just like everyone human has the ability to swim, so does every human have the ability to access the spirituality-within regardless of their circumstances.

How to pursue spirituality with or without religion:

One doesn’t need to adhere to any specific religion to tap into one’s spiritual essence. Start by cultivating quietude and self-awareness. Reflect on your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Learn to go with the flow. Learn to live in moderation where nothing in the world can hold you hostage.

Meditation is the most powerful gateway to access the infinite peace within. It quiets and sublimates the mind, allowing us to go beyond the mind. Even a few minutes daily can open doors within oneself that one never knew existed.

Explore nature and allow its beauty to inspire gratitude and mindfulness. Nature has an innate ability to ground oneself, helping to feel connected beyond human experiences.

Engage in practices like journaling or art. These mediums offer avenues for self-expression and deeper understanding of one’s spiritual path. Learn to be in the “zone” where the activity calms the mind.

Remember, there are no strict rules here; spirituality is flexible and inclusive. Embrace what resonates personally, regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof.

Ravi Kathuria’s perspective on balancing both religion and spirituality:

Ravi Kathuria presents a unique perspective on the intricate dance between religion and spirituality. He believes that both can coexist harmoniously, serving distinct yet complementary roles.

For him, religion often provides structure—a set of guidelines that helps individuals navigate life’s complexities. Yet he emphasizes that true fulfillment lies beyond mere rituals and dogmas.

Spirituality, according to Kathuria, is an inward journey that transcends external practices. It connects one deeply with one’s essence, urging one to explore the ocean of peace within oneself.

He encourages embracing the beauty of spiritual exploration while respecting individual religious beliefs. This balance allows for personal growth without judgment or restriction.

Through meditation and self-reflection, he suggests one can cultivate this harmony—connecting mind and soul in a way that’s enriching rather than divisive. It’s about finding joy in both realms while fostering inclusivity at every step.

As Ravi Kathuria emphasizes through his teachings as a spiritual author and coach: all must learn how to connect with one’s inherent spiritual abilities if one wants transformation in one’s lives. Making time for this connection amidst the chaos of daily living enhances one’s overall well-being.

Take a moment today—quiet your mind—and allow yourself an opportunity for realignment with your life’s ultimate purpose; let go of distractions that pull you away from the serene existence within yourself.

Microsoft dismantles dangerous Lumma infostealer malware targeting personal data

0

Infostealer malware has been on the rise recently, and that’s evident from the billions of user records leaked online in the past year alone. This type of malware targets everything from your name, phone number and address to financial details and cryptocurrency. Leading the charge is the Lumma infostealer.

I have been reporting on this malware since last year, and security researchers have called it one of the most dangerous infostealers, infecting millions. There have been countless incidents of Lumma targeting people’s personal data (more on this later), but the good news is that Microsoft has taken it down.

What you need to know

Microsoft confirmed that it has successfully taken down the Lumma Stealer malware network in collaboration with law enforcement agencies around the world. In a blog post, the company revealed that its Digital Crimes Unit had tracked infections on more than 394,000 Windows devices globally between March 16 and May 16.

Lumma was a go-to tool for cybercriminals, often used to siphon sensitive information like login credentials, credit card numbers, bank account details and cryptocurrency wallet data. The malware’s reach and impact made it a favored choice among threat actors for financial theft and data breaches.

To disrupt the malware’s operation, Microsoft obtained a court order from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, which allowed the company to take down key domains that supported Lumma’s infrastructure. This was followed by the U.S. Department of Justice stepping in to seize control of Lumma’s core command system and shut down marketplaces where the malware was being sold.

International cooperation played a major role as well. Japan’s cybercrime unit helped dismantle Lumma’s locally hosted infrastructure, while Europol assisted in actions against hundreds of domains used in the operation. In total, over 1,300 domains were seized or redirected to Microsoft-managed sinkholes to prevent further damage.

Microsoft says this takedown effort also included support from industry partners such as Cloudflare, Bitsight and Lumen, which helped dismantle the broader ecosystem that enabled Lumma to thrive.

NEW MALWARE EXPLOITS FAKE UPDATES TO STEAL DATA

More about the Lumma infostealer

Lumma is a Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS) that has been marketed and sold through underground forums since at least 2022. Over the years, its developers have released multiple versions to continually improve its capabilities. I first reported on Lumma in February 2024, when it was used by hackers to access Google accounts using expired cookies that contained login information.

Lumma continued targeting users, with reports in October 2024 revealing it was impersonating fake human verification pages to trick Windows users into sharing sensitive information. The malware wasn’t limited to Windows. In January 2024, security researchers found the infostealer malware was targeting 100 million Mac users, stealing browser credentials, cryptocurrency wallets and other personal data.

HOW TO REMOVE MALWARE ON A PC (2025)

6 ways you can protect yourself from infostealer malware

To protect yourself from the evolving threat of infostealer malware, which continues to target users through sophisticated social engineering tactics, consider taking these six essential security measures:

1. Be skeptical of CAPTCHA prompts: Legitimate CAPTCHA tests never require you to press Windows + R, copy commands or paste anything into PowerShell. If a website instructs you to do this, it’s likely a scam. Close the page immediately and avoid interacting with it.

2. Don’t click links from unverified emails and use strong antivirus software: Many infostealer attacks start with phishing emails that impersonate trusted services. Always verify the sender before clicking on links. If an email seems urgent or unexpected, go directly to the company’s official website instead of clicking any links inside the email.

The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

3. Enable two-factor authentication: Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password.

4. Keep devices updated: Regularly updating your operating system, browser and security software ensures you have the latest patches against known vulnerabilities. Cybercriminals exploit outdated systems, so enabling automatic updates is a simple but effective way to stay protected.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

5. Monitor your accounts for suspicious activity and change your passwords: If you’ve interacted with a suspicious website, phishing email or fake login page, check your online accounts for any unusual activity. Look for unexpected login attempts, unauthorized password resets or financial transactions that you don’t recognize. If anything seems off, change your passwords immediately and report the activity to the relevant service provider. Also, consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords. Get more details about my best expert-reviewed Password Managers of 2025 here.

6. Invest in a personal data removal service: Consider using a service that monitors your personal information and alerts you to potential breaches or unauthorized use of your data. These services can provide early warning signs of identity theft or other malicious activities resulting from infostealer malware or similar attacks. While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

MALWARE STEALS BANK CARDS AND PASSWORDS FROM MILLIONS OF DEVICES

Kurt’s key takeaway

Microsoft’s takedown of the Lumma Stealer malware network is a major win in the fight against infostealers, which have fueled a surge in data breaches over the past year. Lumma had become a go-to tool for cybercriminals, targeting everything from browser credentials to crypto wallets across Windows and Mac systems. I’ve been tracking this malware since early 2024, and its ability to impersonate human verification pages and abuse expired cookies made it especially dangerous.

Jet power and featherweight design

Unlike many personal flying devices that depend on large, noisy propellers, the Volonaut Airbike uses a jet propulsion system. While the exact technical details have not been disclosed, the Airbike’s design emphasizes extreme lightness and agility.

CHINESE WEARABLE EVTOL JETPACK MAKES HISTORIC FIRST FLIGHT

Extensive use of carbon fiber and 3D-printed parts allows the vehicle to weigh just 86 pounds without a rider. This is approximately seven times lighter than an average motorcycle, which typically weighs around 600 pounds. This featherweight construction makes the Airbike nimble and efficient in the air.

ORLANDO’S PLAN FOR FLYING CARS TAKES OFF

Meet the inventor: Tomasz Patan

Tomasz Patan is a visionary engineer with a talent for creating groundbreaking airborne vehicles. He is best known for the Jetson One, a quad-rotor electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) drone that can carry a human pilot. Building on the success of that project, Patan has now introduced the Volonaut Airbike, a smaller, more agile flying machine that relies on jet propulsion rather than propellers. His work continues to push the boundaries of what personal flight can achieve.

What about the cost?

When it comes to price, the Volonaut Airbike is still something of a mystery. Patan has not yet revealed an official cost, but if you look at his previous project, the Jetson One drone, which was priced at around $92,000, you can get a rough idea of where the Airbike might land. Given the advanced materials, jet propulsion and sophisticated flight computer involved, it’s safe to assume this won’t be a budget-friendly ride.

However, as with most new technologies, prices often come down over time as production scales up and designs are refined. So, while it might start out as a high-end gadget for early adopters and enthusiasts, there’s hope that flying bikes like this could become more accessible in the years ahead.

Dozens of Palestinians killed, nearly 200 wounded while on their way to collect aid in Gaza

0

At least 26 Palestinians were killed and at least 175 were wounded as they made their way to receive food in the Gaza Strip, according to health officials and witnesses.

Witnesses said Israeli forces fired on crowds around 1,000 yards away from an aid site run by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. A Palestinian journalist told the BBC that thousands of Palestinians had gathered near the aid site near Gaza’s southern city of Rafah when Israeli tanks approached and opened fire on the crowd.

The Israeli Defense Forces said it is “currently unaware of injuries caused by IDF fire within the Humanitarian Aid distribution site,” adding that “the matter is still under review.”

The foundation said in a statement that it delivered 16 truckloads of aid “without incident” early on Sunday. It has denied previous accounts of chaos and gunfire around its sites, which are in Israeli military zones where independent access is limited.

In its statement, the foundation dismissed what it referred to as “false reporting about deaths, mass injuries and chaos.”

The organization’s distribution of aid has been marred by chaos, with multiple witnesses having said Israeli troops fired on crowds near the delivery sites. Before Sunday, at least six people had been killed and more than 50 wounded, according to local health officials.

The foundation says the private security contractors guarding its sites have not fired on the crowds. The Israeli military has said it fired warning shots in previous incidents.

As thousands of people headed toward the distribution site hours before dawn, Israeli forces ordered them to disperse and return later, witnesses said. When the crowds reached the Flag Roundabout, around 1,000 yards away, at around 3 a.m., the military opened fire, the witnesses said.

“There was fire from all directions, from naval warships, from tanks and drones,” Amr Abu Teiba, who was in the crowd, said.

He said he observed at least 10 bodies with gunshot wounds and several other wounded people, including women. People used carts to carry the victims to the field hospital.

Another witness, Ibrahim Abu Saoud, gave a nearly identical account. Abu Saoud said he saw many people with gunshot wounds, including a young man who he said had died at the scene.

Mohammed Abu Teaima said he saw Israeli forces open fire and kill his cousin and another woman as they were on their way to the distribution site. He said his cousin was shot in his chest and died at the scene, while many others were wounded, including his brother-in-law.

“They opened heavy fire directly towards us,” he said.

Israel and the U.S., which also backs the foundation, say the new aid system seeks to prevent Hamas from taking away aid. Israel has not provided any evidence of systematic diversion and the U.N. denies it has happened.

U.N. agencies and major aid groups have refused to work with the new system, arguing that it violates humanitarian principles since it allows Israel to control who receives aid and forces people to relocate to distribution sites.

The U.N. system has struggled to bring in aid after Israel recently slightly eased its total blockade of the territory. The groups say Israel’s restrictions, the breakdown of law and order and widespread looting make it extremely difficult to deliver aid to Palestinians in Gaza.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
