Ivanka Trump’s jiu-jitsu trainers on why the martial art is great for families

0

First daughter Ivanka Trump has gone public with her practice of jiu-jitsu.

In a recent Instagram post by martial artists The Valente Brothers, Trump showed off her mastered maneuvers with trainer Gui Valente.

Trump recently shared that her daughter, Arabella, first started taking classes before the entire family joined.

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who has also trained with the Valente brothers and is the mother of Joaquim Valente’s child, has publicly called out the benefits of her own jiu-jitsu practice.

“I feel stronger, more confident and empowered since I started practicing self-defense,” she said in a previous Instagram post. “I feel it’s an important skill for all, but especially for us women.”

In an on-camera interview with Fox News Digital, the three Valente brothers — Pedro, Gui and Joaquim, who are based in Miami, Florida — shared why a self-defense practice like jiu-jitsu is a great physical and mental workout for the whole family.

“We have students starting as young as 3 years old and as old as 87 continuing their training,” Joaquim Valente said. “It creates an opportunity for everyone to engage.”

For kids facing bullying, the practice helps them develop the physical confidence to protect themselves and parents wind up tagging along, according to Joaquim.

STAY SAFE WITH 4 SELF-DEFENSE TIPS FROM EXPERT RENER GRACIE: ‘NOT AN EASY TARGET’

“Saturday, we call it family day here at Valente Brothers,” he said. “We have so many families that come together, and they train with their kids.”

The art of jiu-jitsu

The martial art, which originated from samurai warriors in medieval Japan, started to become popular in the U.S. during the 20th century, when then-President Teddy Roosevelt practiced it in the White House.

For the last 30 years, the Valente brothers, whose family is originally from Brazil and trained with world-renowned Brazilian martial artist Helio Gracie, have specialized in teaching jiu-jitsu as both a self-defense tool and a path to wellness.

The brothers focus on a “7-5-3 code” philosophy, which is intended to create “spiritual, mental and physical wellness.”

Joaquim Valente shared that their instruction focuses on empowering people for various situations, like being put in a headlock or preparing for a punch.

Gui Valente added that jiu-jitsu can also provide health benefits, noting that their predecessors were doctors — including their father, Grand Master Pedro Valente Sr., who was a plastic surgeon.

“He often talked about how what he learned on the mat helped tremendously with his career,” Gui said. “All the fundamentals of jiu-jitsu, the philosophical aspect of jiu-jitsu, can be beneficial on and off the mat.”

Pedro Valente trains members of the U.S. military.

“Self-defense is a human necessity,” Pedro Valente added. “Our style of jiu-jitsu gives students this opportunity even if they’re very busy with their lives – with business and work and family – they still can come in and learn a very powerful system of self-defense but in a very safe way.”

Jiu-jitsu is an “exercise of the mind,” the brothers described, which makes it a great mindfulness practice amid the stresses of daily life.

Maneuvers to master

The brothers repeated that their 7-5-3 philosophy – which represents the seven virtues of a warrior, five keys to health and three states of mind – is lesson No. 1 in learning self-defense.

Simple techniques — like learning how to release control if someone grabs you by the wrist and pulls, or if someone places two hands around your neck with the intention to choke — are a basic necessity, Joaquim Valente noted.

CRUNCHES BY AGE: HERE’S HOW MANY YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO

Another essential technique of jiu-jitsu is learning how to fall without being injured.

But the best self-defense technique, according to the trainers, is avoiding confrontation altogether.

“We want to think about self-defense even before the fight happens,” Gui Valente said. “When we talk about situational awareness, we also talk about teaching students risk management.”

STAY FIT IN YOUR 40S AND BEYOND WITH THESE SMART WORKOUT TIPS

Pedro Valente also discussed the importance of emotional balance and developing a “sense of poise” when approached with danger.

“When you are in a state of panic, the frontal lobe of your brain is not functioning well, you’re not going to be able to rationally decide what’s the best escape route,” he told Fox News Digital.

“The best self-defense is always avoidance. If you get into a physical fight, you’re already a step behind.”

Pedro added that having emotional balance also helps to avoid “petty arguments, bickering, that many times will lead to a fight.”

“Anticipation is key — and the only way to anticipate is to be present,” he said, emphasizing the importance of being connected to one’s surroundings.

“Presence is something that can really enhance our mental state and, at the same time, allow us to anticipate a problem that might be happening around us.”

Self-defense in schools

The three brothers, who are all fathers to young children who train, shared their goal for jiu-jitsu to be taught more widely in schools as physical education.

The brothers have been leading this movement in the Miami area, where a few instructors have been teaching in some schools.

“We consider it to be the best form of PE,” Gui Valente said. “It really complements the academics … and what develops into physical confidence, improves children’s self-esteem.”

Pedro Valente echoed that this education is a “powerful combination of intellectual and physical confidence.”

“Jiu-jitsu — and this is something that we work on with psychologists and therapists — is one of the key ways to address these common problems that every kid faces,” Gui Valente added.

The brothers also emphasized that jiu-jitsu has helped students of all ages with weight loss due to the physical elements of the sport, as well as nutritional awareness.

“Self-defense is a human necessity.”

“You work every single muscle in your body and in different ways,” Gui Valente said. “You have to be able to develop great stamina, because when you spar, you have to last for sometimes 20 to 30 minutes, or even longer than that.”

A McDonald’s in Franklin, Tennessee, attracted viral attention last month after a customer called out the children’s play area and posted a photo on X.

The photo showed a sitting area in the corner of the restaurant, with two screens embedded in the wall.

X user @NancyAFrench posted an image of the PlayPlace, writing, “This is so heartbreaking. I’m at a new McDonald’s in Franklin, TN, and look at their ‘play place’ for children. Two screens/two chairs.”

A McDonald’s spokesperson told Fox News Digital that while this restaurant “has a few interactive features for younger guests, it does not represent the full PlayPlace design and experience.”

Gary He, author of “McAtlas,” a visual social anthropology book about McDonald’s, has traveled to McDonald’s locations in over 55 countries across six continents.

“[McDonald’s restaurants] come in all shapes and sizes; some of them have massive PlayPlaces, but most of them have nothing at all,” He told Fox News Digital.

McDonald’s PlayPlaces, before the digital age, featured character-themed displays that were designed to attract kids and families.

The Road to ‘Liberation Day’

For decades, President Donald Trump has remained a staunch advocate for tariffs — routinely declaring the word one of the most beautiful in the dictionary and regularly accusing foreign countries of ripping off the U.S.

Following through on 2024 campaign promises and building upon policies his first administration introduced, Trump unveiled a series of historic tariffs at the White House’s Rose Garden Wednesday for a “Make America Wealthy Again” event as part of a day his administration dubbed “Liberation Day” for the U.S.

While some lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have voiced concern over the policy, tariffs are an area where Trump’s views have remained incredibly consistent over the years, as he has routinely decried that other countries have treated the U.S. unfairly in trade deals…Read more

Research shows link between shingles vaccine and lower dementia risk

0

The link between the zoster vaccine and a lower dementia risk has been strengthened in new research.

A study by Stanford Medicine, published in the journal Nature on April 2, found that the vaccine — which is used to prevent shingles — reduced the probability of a new dementia diagnosis by about 20% over the next seven years.

“If these findings are truly causal, the zoster vaccine will be both far more effective and cost-effective in preventing or delaying dementia than existing pharmaceutical interventions,” the researchers noted in the study.

NEW BLOOD TEST DIAGNOSES ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AND MEASURES HOW FAR IT’S PROGRESSED

These findings also support an emerging theory that viruses impacting the nervous system can increase dementia risk.

Senior study author Pascal Geldsetzer, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at Stanford, said he considers these findings “hugely important” for clinical medicine, population health and research.

Researchers have marked a link between the zoster vaccine and lower dementia risk in multiple data sets. (iStock)

“For the first time, we now have evidence that likely shows a cause-and-effect relationship between shingles vaccination and dementia prevention,” he told Fox News Digital.

“We find these protective effects to be large in size – substantially larger than those of existing pharmacological tools for dementia.”

The randomized trial took advantage of the unique way the zoster vaccine was rolled out in Wales, U.K., in 2013, Geldsetzer noted.

TWO ALZHEIMER’S DRUGS HELP PATIENTS LIVE INDEPENDENTLY AT HOME FOR LONGER PERIODS

“They said that if you had your 80th birthday just prior to the start date of the program, you are ineligible, and you remain ineligible for life,” he said. “If you had your 80th birthday just after, you were eligible for at least one year.”

“We see in our data that just a one-week difference across this date-of-birth cutoff means that you go from essentially no one getting vaccinated to about half of the population getting vaccinated.”

The study found that women benefited from the vaccine more than men in terms of reduced dementia risk. (iStock)

Both the vaccine-eligible and ineligible groups are “good comparison groups,” according to Geldsetzer, since the only difference is that they were born a few days earlier or later.

The same protective effect of shingles vaccination for dementia has been identified in different populations and countries that rolled out the vaccine in a similar way, the researcher revealed.

EXPERIMENTAL WOMEN’S CANCER DRUG BOOSTS SURVIVAL RATES IN NOTABLE STUDY

To gather more evidence and confirm the link, Geldsetzer recommends conducting a clinical trial.

“I’m currently trying to raise funds to conduct such a trial from private foundations and philanthropy,” he said.

“We want to trial the live-attenuated vaccine (the vaccine for which we have generated our compelling body of evidence), which is no longer being manufactured in the U.S.”

Vaccine in the arm

The protective effect of shingles vaccination for dementia has been identified in different populations and countries, according to researchers. (iStock)

Family physician Dr. Mark Loafman, who was not involved in the study, weighed in on the association between the shingles vaccine and dementia risk.

“We commonly see intriguing headlines from studies showing an association between a particular health outcome and exposure to something in the environment, our diet or medication,” the Chicago doctor said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“The challenge when interpreting this type of data is that an association is in no way proof that the exposure is what caused the health finding.”

Loafman said this large-population study does a “very good job” of excluding the possibility that the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups share different attributes that could skew the outcome.

“So, it really does look like the vaccine does indeed offer a fairly significant level of protection against developing dementia.”

Dementia brain scan

These findings support an “emerging theory” that viruses impacting the nervous system can increase dementia risk, according to Stanford Medicine. (iStock)

“The study also includes compelling evidence to support two highly plausible mechanisms … in which the vaccine decreases the incidence of dementia,” he added.

This includes the fact that the herpes virus, which causes chickenpox and shingles, settles into the nervous system and lies dormant, which can ignite shingles later.

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health

“Secondly, the live-attenuated vaccines, like the shingles vaccine, are associated with neuroprotective properties,” Loafman went on. “The association is not in itself causal, but this study adds a lot more credibility to this association.”

Loafman, who has already received the shingles vaccine himself, said he will recommend it to patients in light of this research.

“These findings bring even more encouragement for me to recommend it to my eligible patients, friends and family,” he said.

Cruise ship gets hit by 40-foot waves in Drake Passage

Passengers on a cruise ship sailing through rough seas got more than they bargained for when waves up to 40 feet rocked passengers onboard.

Video posted to Instagram shows massive waves hitting the Quark Expeditions’ Ocean Explorer ship, which was traveling between Antartica and the tip of South Africa, known as the Drake Passage, according to the New York Post.

“Imagine if you signed up for a 48 hour rollercoaster,” one travel blogger wrote on Instagram. “Yes, we were safe and it was insane…and at times, even fun? 1000% worth it for this trip of a lifetime!”

Lesley Anne Murphy, a travel blogger, said that crew on the ship had told passengers to stay in their cabins until the ship was no longer being rocked by the waves.

Quark Expeditions said the Drake Passage has “fierce weather and extremely powerful waves,” since it’s an area where the Pacific, Atlantic, and Southern oceans flow.

Steps for easy troubleshooting to remotely reset your router

0

Does your home have a ton of smart home devices running it? If you do, there’s a good chance that you’ve been out of the house when your internet has gone down and needed a way to quickly reset your router remotely to keep everything at home running smoothly.

Tom from Carol Stream, Illinois, reached out to us with this same problem: “When I’m out of town and my internet goes down, all of my ‘internet of things’ goes down too. Yes, I’m supposed to turn off my router and turn it on again, but if I’m not at home, is there anything I can do when I’m out of town? Any help? It’s very frustrating!”

Tom, we understand your frustration. It can be inconvenient when your internet goes down, especially when you’re not at home to reset your router. However, there are ways to reset your router remotely. Here are the general steps to resetting your router remotely using a web browser.

How to reset your router with a web browser

Before we start, though, it’s important to note that you will need administrator access to your router. Luckily, this is simple if it’s your own home router. Unless you’ve changed the settings, your router uses the default username and password for its model, which you can find by a simple web search. Once you have your router’s login information, follow these steps.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

  • Open your browser: Open any web browser with a good Internet connection.
  • Have login details prepared: Have your router’s login information handy, including the public IP address, the network name and the password.
  • Login to router: Open any web browser and input: http://192.168.1.1. This will lead to your router login page, where you will sign in before adjusting settings.
  • Reset router: Look for a setting devoted to resetting or restoring a router to its factory settings. You can enable this process by pressing enter. The settings page should let you know when the reset has been completed. Depending on your ISP, you might have to use their dedicated app. For example, as you can see in the screenshot below, I have Spectrum at home and can only edit the router’s settings via the Spectrum mobile app. Typing in the router address will launch the same page, but Spectrum has a note redirecting you to their app to change your settings or reset your router.

The exact steps may vary depending on your router’s make and model. Also, ensure that your router has no power issues and a stable connection, as interruptions can affect the reset process.

Most of the major ISPs in North America now allow you to reset your networking equipment remotely via a smartphone app, making it even easier to reset your router. This assumes you are using their router and not one you purchased for yourself. If you use a third-party router, you’ll need to follow the steps above to reset it.

What if my router doesn’t allow remote restarting?

If your router doesn’t support remote rebooting, you might consider investing in a smart plug that can be controlled remotely. This would allow you to power cycle your router from anywhere by turning the smart plug off and on. Remember, it’s always important to secure your router and any remote access with strong, unique passwords to prevent unauthorized access.

Smart plugs come with smartphone apps that will allow you to set schedules and remotely turn and off plugs around your house, including the plug you plug your router into. All you need to reset your router with a smart plug is a high-quality smart plug.

Val Kilmer’s death from pneumonia: Doctor shares common causes

0

Val Kilmer’s death on Tuesday has sparked reminders of the risks of pneumonia.

The actor, best known for his role as Iceman in “Top Gun” — along with “Batman Forever,” “The Doors” and many other movies — was 65 when he succumbed to the respiratory infection in Los Angeles, the Associated Press reported.

Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes, confirmed the cause of death, noting that the actor had previously recovered from throat cancer after a 2015 diagnosis.

LINGERING LUNG DISORDERS 5 YEARS POST-COVID: HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW

What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is defined by Cleveland Clinic as an infection in the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi.

This can cause the lung tissue to swell and create a buildup of fluid or pus in the lungs.

Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox News’ senior medical analyst, said the risk of pneumonia depends on the underlying health conditions of the patient and the strength of the person’s immune system.

‘I VAPED FOR ONE YEAR AND ALMOST DIED’

“Val Kilmer had a history of throat cancer, but we don’t know if he was receiving recent treatment that would have made him immunocompromised and more susceptible to severe pneumonia,” Siegel told Fox News Digital.

“We also don’t have information on the exact kind of pneumonia he had.”

Bacterial vs. viral pneumonia

Most cases of community-acquired pneumonia are bacterial or viral.

Bacterial pneumonia is normally more severe than viral pneumonia, according to Cleveland Clinic.

It can be caused by an infection of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, also called pneumococcal disease. Other bacteria that can cause the respiratory condition include mycoplasma pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, Chlamydia pneumoniae and Legionella (Legionnaires’ disease), per the above source.

“Pneumococcus is a major cause of pneumonia — it can be deadly,” Siegel said. “Invasive pneumococcal disease can have a death rate of up to 20% in adults.”

The risk of bacterial pneumonia increases with age and with chronic illness, the doctor added.

Viral pneumonia can sometimes stem from viruses that include the flu, common cold, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), according to Cleveland Clinic.

This type of pneumonia typically improves on its own.

In less common cases, some fungi (molds) or protozoa can cause pneumonia.

“The biggest concern is that it could spread into the bloodstream and cause sepsis, which is definitely life-threatening,” Siegel cautioned.

Atypical pneumonias are caused by mycoplasma, legionella and kinds of chlamydia (not STD) and pertussis, the doctor added.

Treatment and prevention

Early diagnosis and treatment is key to recovery, especially in patients at risk, Siegel said.

High-risk groups include the very young, very old, immunocompromised people, those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and people who smoke.

For those over age 60, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the pneumococcal vaccine.

“The effective version, known as Prevnar, can work against 20 different strains,” Siegel said.

Proof of ancient garden in Jerusalem found near holy site where Jesus was crucified and buried

Proof of an ancient garden, consistent with biblical scripture, has emerged at the holiest site in Christianity — and an archaeologist says “many surprises” from the site are in the works.

Archaeologists excavating the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the ancient church in Jerusalem situated where Jesus Christ was crucified and buried, recently found evidence of ancient olive trees and grapevines. The specimens date back roughly 2,000 years.

The discovery echoes the New Testament verse John 19:41, “Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.”

METAL DETECTORIST UNWITTINGLY DISCOVERS STRANGE HOARD OF HUNDREDS OF ANCIENT OBJECTS: ‘RARELY SEEN’

Francesca Stasolla, an archaeology professor at the Sapienza University of Rome, confirmed the findings with Fox News Digital on Wednesday. She said the proof of the ancient garden came in the form of seeds and pollen.

Calvary, the site where the church stands, had multiple uses in ancient times, including being used as a quarry.

While the exact age of the organic material has yet to be determined, Stasolla said the pollen and seeds date back “in between the use of the quarry and the Roman age, when the area had a funerary use.”

“The quarry had to be gradually abandoned and as the stone extraction ended it was used for agricultural areas and tombs,” Stasolla said. “This must have been what it looked like in the 1st century A.D.”

Stasolla also mentioned that many artifacts have been found at the site so far, with some dating all the way back to the Iron Age. The discoveries attest to the area’s status as a pilgrimage location since the fourth century.

“Ceramics, metals, glass… [all] document both the occupation of the area and the presence of believers and pilgrims,” she noted. “The excavation’s [aim is to gain] knowledge [about this] significant area of the city of Jerusalem.”

“And this is what it is giving back,” she added. “An area that, from a certain moment on, becomes central in the Christian cult.”

The excavation, first reported by the Times of Israel, is the first major restoration project at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in nearly two centuries. The diggings are “taking place in all areas of the church common to the religious communities,” Stasolla said.

The church was founded in 326 A.D., though the original fourth-century structure was destroyed by Islamic ruler al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah in 1009 A.D.

The site was taken over by Christian Crusaders nearly a century later, and Stasolla said that the still-standing church is largely the work of the Crusaders.

“The current church is that of the Crusader reconstruction, but the whole church is a composition of historical phases from the fourth century to the modern age,” she described.

When asked if she felt that the discovery echoes John 19:41, Stastolla agreed, though she drew a line between archaeological research and theology.

“Archaeology provides us with data that must then be historicized and interpreted,” she said. “In this case, it documents an agricultural use of the quarry… [the Bible quote] is certainly suggestive [of this].”

Stasolla also emphasized that the excavation work is “still in progress, and the study will reserve many surprises.”

“It is certainly a strategic excavation for the knowledge of the development of the city and its process of sacralization in a Christian key,” she said.
