RFK Jr. calls on West Virginia governor to lose weight during joint event

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is on a mission to make America healthy again, and he’s tackling the country’s most obese state — and its governor.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey, R, and Kennedy held a joint event on Friday to announce a ban on certain food dyes. The governor also took the opportunity to announce that his state has submitted a waiver that would prohibit Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants from using the benefits to purchase soda.

Morrisey celebrated the move, saying his state was “putting ‘nutrition’ back into the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.”

“I urge every governor to follow West Virginia’s lead and submit a waiver to the USDA to remove soda from SNAP. If there’s one thing we can agree on, it should be eliminating taxpayer-funded soda subsidies for lower-income kids,” Kennedy said in a statement ahead of the event.

Kennedy, however, isn’t just looking to make the state’s residents healthier, he’s trying to shrink Morrisey’s waistline as well. He recalled getting to know the governor during the transition period as the Trump administration prepared for the president’s return to the White House. According to Kennedy, he didn’t sugarcoat his thoughts on Morrisey’s weight.

“The first time I saw him, I said, ‘You look like you ate Governor Morrisey,’” Kennedy said during his joint appearance with the West Virginia governor. “I am going to put him on a really rigorous regimen, and we’re gonna put him on a carnivore diet.”

Additionally, Kennedy suggested that the governor do a public weigh-in every month and encouraged those in the audience who wanted Morrisey to participate to raise their hands. The HHS chief also vowed to return to West Virginia when Morrisey loses 30lbs to do a celebration and a public weigh-in.

Morrisey’s policies could make a big change for West Virginia, which currently has a higher rate of obesity than any other state. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of 2023, West Virginia was one of only three states to have an obesity prevalence of 40% or greater. Arkansas’ obesity prevalence was 40%, Mississippi’s was 40.1%, while West Virginia’s was 41.2%.

As of 2022, the World Obesity Foundation ranked the U.S. as the 19th most obese country in the world with 43.29% of adults being obese. Meanwhile, American Samoa was ranked number one with over 75% of adults suffering from obesity.

Utah becomes the first state to ban fluoride from public drinking water

Utah has become the first state in the U.S. to ban adding fluoride to its public drinking water systems as concerns about the decades-long practice continue to grow, fueled in part by the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement.

Republican Gov. Spencer Cox signed legislation Thursday that bars cities and communities from deciding whether to add the chemical to their water systems.

The bill was passed by the legislature last month and is set to go into effect on May 7.

RFK JR. CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF FLUORIDE FROM DRINKING WATER, SPARKING DEBATE

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that fluoride strengthens teeth and reduces cavities by replacing minerals lost during normal wear and tear.

Critics, however, have long said that washing teeth with fluoride is not comparable to the risks posed by ingesting fluoride, with the latter potentially triggering harmful neurotoxic effects. The fluoride used in public systems is typically not naturally occurring fluoride and is instead sourced from the phosphate fertilizer industry, where it’s captured during processing to prevent environmental emissions.

Utah lawmakers who pushed for a ban said putting fluoride in water was too expensive and didn’t improve dental health. Cox, who grew up and raised his own children in a community without fluoridated water, compared it recently to being “medicated” by the government.

Bill sponsor Rep. Stephanie Gricius, a Republican, told Fox News Digital in January that she had been working on the bill since early last year, noting that fluoride is federally regulated as a prescription.

“Community water fluoridation and informed consent, which is foundational to good health care, cannot coexist,” Gricius said. “I believe strongly in individual choice when it comes to what prescriptions we put into our bodies.”

She said only two of Utah’s 29 counties practice community water fluoridation, and with a sample size of more than 70,000 children, researchers found there was no significant difference on children’s dental decay between counties that add fluoride and those that do not.

“In fact, the county with the lowest amount of decay does not add fluoride,” she said.

The American Dental Association sharply criticized Cox and Utah lawmakers, saying the ban showed “wanton disregard for the oral health and well-being of their constituents.” The group said that cavities are the most common chronic childhood disease.

FLUORIDE IN WATER LINKED TO LOWER INTELLIGENCE

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. vowed in November to outlaw the practice nationwide.

“Fluoride is an industrial waste associated with arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders and thyroid disease,” RFK wrote in a post on X in November.

Kennedy, who is seen as the father of the MAHA movement since he endorsed President Trump’s presidential campaign in July, aims to improve nutrition, eliminate toxins, preserve natural habitats and fight the chronic disease epidemic in this country.

If Kennedy were to end the practice, it would overturn a policy first enacted 80 years ago when Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first city in the world to fluoridate its water supply.

Currently, more than 200 million Americans, or about 75 percent of the population, drink fluoridated water.

In September, a judge in California ordered the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to further regulate fluoride because high levels could pose “an unreasonable risk” to the intellectual development of children.

“Indeed, EPA’s own expert agrees that fluoride is hazardous at some level of exposure,” the judge said. “And ample evidence establishes that a mother’s exposure to fluoride during pregnancy is associated with IQ decrements in her offspring.”

Lawmakers in states including Ohio, South Carolina and Florida have also made proposals to restrict local governments or water system operators from adding fluoride to water.

Proposed restrictions on fluoridation in New Hampshire, Tennessee and North Dakota were rejected. A measure in Kentucky to make fluoridation optional stalled in the state Senate.

How to use the built-in Duplicates finder in the Photos App (macOS Ventura and later)

If you’re using macOS Ventura or newer, Apple has added a Duplicates finder inside the Photos app. Here are the steps to find and merge duplicates in the Photos App on a Mac:

First things first, open up your photos app.
You can do this by clicking Finder in the dock at the bottom of your home screen.

If you have any duplicate photos, this will show up automatically. Once you’re in the duplicates section, you’ll see all the duplicate images the app has detected. Take a moment to review them.
Next to or above each set of duplicates, you’ll see a “merge” button.
When you click it, your Mac will keep the highest-quality version and say goodbye to the others.

It’ll ask you to confirm your decision.
Go ahead and click it.

Just like that, you’ve cleared out all your duplicate photos. Now, you’ve just freed up some valuable space on your Mac, and your photo library is duplicate-free.

Use a third-party app for deep duplicate scanning

Third-party apps are a great option for more advanced duplicate detection (including photos stored outside the Photos app). If you have antivirus software, some offer a duplicate file finder that detects duplicate images, videos, and files stored on your Mac. Once installed, you can scan your folders, review the detected duplicate files, select the ones you want to delete and click “Remove” to free up space. (We always encourage you to back up your system before doing this if you ever need to restore any files.) Bonus tip: Clear out old iCloud photo duplicates

If your Mac syncs with iCloud Photos, any duplicates removed from the Mac will also be deleted from iCloud. However, if you keep a lot of photos outside the Photos app, running a strong antivirus software on your Mac storage can help clear space efficiently.

Empty trash

When you delete something on your Mac, it remains in the Trash folder and continues to occupy storage space until you empty the Trash. The Trash does not automatically hold files for a specific number of days unless you have enabled the “Empty Trash Automatically” feature, which can be set to remove items after 30 days. If you need to free up space immediately, emptying the Trash is a good first step.

After clearing the Trash, the next step is to delete unnecessary apps. Unused applications take up valuable storage space and can slow down your system. Removing them will free up space and improve performance.

Open Finder.
Click Applications.
Click and drag unused applications to the Trash icon in the dock.
Empty the Trash by right-clicking on the Trash icon in the dock and selecting Empty Trash.
Confirm the deletion by clicking Empty Trash.

Delete the files you don’t need

Take some time to go through your files and delete anything you no longer need. Old documents, large video files, duplicate photos, and outdated downloads can take up a surprising amount of space. If you are unsure about deleting certain files, move them to an external drive or cloud storage before permanently removing them.

Click the Apple menu.
Then select System Settings.
Click General and select Storage.

Always exercise caution when deleting files and ensure you have a backup before making significant changes to your data.

Transfer files to external storage

Choose the right external drive: Opt for an external hard drive or solid-state drive (SSD) that suits your needs. SSDs offer faster speeds and better durability, while HDDs provide larger capacities at lower costs.
Transfer files: Connect your external drive, copy your files to it, and verify that all files are successfully transferred.
Delete original files: After verifying the transfer, delete the original files from your Mac to free up space. Use Finder to move files to Trash and then empty it.

Consider cloud storage

Use services like Google Drive, Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive to store large files and free up local storage. These services offer automatic syncing and backup features.

Study reveals parents have favorite children — here’s why

Whether they admit it or not, previous research shows that the majority of parents do indeed have favorite children.

A recent study from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah examined the reasons behind parents showing favoritism, a phenomenon dubbed parental differential treatment (PDT).

To do this, they gathered a large set of existing studies conducted between August 2015 and April 2022, according to a university press release.

Searches for terms like “parental favoritism,” “siblings” and “differential parenting” in multiple databases led the researchers to at least 243 studies. After applying certain criteria, the pool narrowed to 30.

The team also reached out to researchers around the world and identified 14 more datasets with unpublished or unique data.

The researchers then analyzed patterns related to traits like birth order, gender and personality to draw conclusions about PDT.

Fox News Digital spoke to the lead author of the study, BYU School of Family Life Professor Alex Jensen, to discuss the findings, which were published in the journal Psychological Bulletin.

Daughters tend to be given preferential treatment, according to Jensen, although the children themselves did not perceive that.

One reason could be evolutionary, he surmised. “In many past societies, sons were a safety net of sorts as parents aged. Sons could provide material resources to help them.”

“Parents should work on being open to hearing the perspective of their kids without being defensive.”

In modern western societies, daughters are much more likely to care for aging parents, Jensen noted.

“In that way, parents may be storing up ‘social capital’ with their daughters, with the potential of the daughters providing care later on.”

During childhood, he said, sons are more inclined to play outdoors in larger groups, and daughters indoors with smaller groups.

“Over the past several decades, parents have become less and less inclined to allow their kids to play outdoors without supervision,” Jensen told Fox News Digital. “Daughters may, on average, be more suited to current parenting culture, and thus easier to parent.”

Birth order also appears to be a factor, with the youngest siblings often getting preferential treatment.

Older siblings, however, are given more autonomy and freedom, according to Jensen. That same treatment seemed to last into adulthood, the study found.

More agreeable and responsible children also tend to be favored. “I think it’s that they are just easier to parent,” said Jensen.

“For example, an agreeable child will be more likely to do what they are asked by the parent. A conscientious child will be more likely to do their homework, their chores … or be aware of those around them and their needs.”

Looking ahead, Jensen hopes that understanding more about how parents treat their children and the resulting impact may enable them to take steps to better tap into their kids’ feelings.

A study several years ago suggested that if children understand why they are treated differently, the differences don’t matter as much, according to the researcher.

“In some cases, I would argue that what the kids think is more important,” he said. “Parents should work on being open to hearing the perspective of their kids without being defensive.”

As investigators look into the death of teen Miller Gardner, son of former New York Yankees player Brett Gardner, experts are speaking out about exposure to food-related illnesses during travel and how serious they can be.

The Gardner family was vacationing in Costa Rica when they announced their tragic loss.

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st,” the Gardners said in a statement, which was released by the Yankees.

“Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.”

Brett and Jessica Gardner said other family members fell ill on the vacation.

The focus of the investigation has shifted to possible food poisoning, a judicial official told Fox News Digital Wednesday.

While the cause of Miller Gardner’s death remains unconfirmed, the incident is a reminder of the health risks travelers could face.

Francesca Page, a New York-based travel expert, told Fox News Digital there are some safety factors to consider while on vacation, which is a time when families typically eat outside food daily.

Page says travelers should prioritize cooked food by opting for hot, freshly cooked dishes and to avoid raw or undercooked foods, especially seafood.

“Be wary of buffets and salad bars. Food left out for long periods, especially in humid environments, is more likely to harbor bacteria,” Page said.

She also said people should be cautious of street food.

Page said, if possible, peel your own fruits and vegetables to ensure they are clean.

You should also avoid ice in drinks as it may be made with contaminated water, she added.

“Anywhere with any suspicion of dirty water be careful, and you can be surprised. I myself caught giardia while surfing in, of all places, Malibu Beach at 20,” said Page.

“I grew up surfing in dirty waters and was warned early on about packing a safety pack when going to places there could be risks for health or wellness,” she added.

Page said bacterial testing strips can be put to use in water samples, which will identify possible contamination.

Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health and a Fox News’ senior medical analyst, said that, in Costa Rica, the water is generally considered safe at resorts.

“But when out of the country, including in Mexico or Central America, it is often a wise precaution to use bottled water when brushing teeth, etc.,” Siegel said.

“Eating at local restaurants as the Gardner family reportedly did, should include caution,” he added. “I would consider staying away from salads or uncooked vegetables for concern about bacteria or parasites.”

In addition to addressing food consumption safety, Siegel advised travelers to use insect repellents to help protect against mosquito-borne diseases.

Walz calls for shadow government to counter Trump

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Friday said a “shadow government” is needed to provide Americans with the truth about the Trump administration’s actions.

Speaking at a town hall in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Walz accused the Trump administration of attacking voting rights, which he argued could be remedied through a new form of government.

“We see one of the first things they do is try and restrict the vote,” Walz said of the Trump administration. “This is one of the things, though, that this is going to take power industry to — I don’t know what the answer is on this, but I’m kind of — I’ve been saying this: I think we need a shadow government, so when all these things come up every single day, we’ve got an alternate press conference telling the truth about what things are happening, tell them what’s going on.”

The remark prompted criticism from Republicans.

“Unhinged loser @Gov TimWalz wants to form a ‘shadow government’ in protest of requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration and banning foreign nationals from interfering in elections,” President Donald Trump’s social media team said on X.

“Pls keep this up sir,” U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said.

The term “shadow government,” mirrors a similar term used in the United Kingdom, where a component of the government creates a group of opposition leaders who mirror the actions of the cabinet in power.

That group “shadows” the other cabinet by scrutinizing their actions and offering alternative solutions.

For the first time in three decades, researchers believe they have identified a new class of antibiotics.

Teams at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada and the University of Illinois, Chicago — led by researcher Gerry Wright — collaborated in the discovery of lariocidin, which was found to be effective against drug-resistant bacteria.

The results were published this week in the journal Nature.

Lariocidin is a lasso peptide, a string of amino acids in a lasso shape that attacks bacteria and keeps it from growing and surviving, according to a McMaster press release.

It is produced by a type of bacteria called Paenibacillus, which the researchers retrieved from a local backyard soil sample and cultivated in a lab for one year.

Paenibacillus was found to produce a new substance that attacks antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

“Lariocidine is not susceptible to many of the mechanisms that make disease-causing bacteria resistant to the available antibiotics,” the researchers told Fox News Digital.

The molecule has a unique structure of a “knotted lasso or a pretzel.”

“Lariocidin binds to the molecular machine, the ribosome, that makes all the cellular proteins, which is one of the most vital processes in the cells,” the researchers said.

“It binds to a specific site in the ribosome to which none of the known antibiotics bind, and stops the ribosome from making proteins.”

Another key benefit of lariocidin is that it’s not toxic to human cells, the researchers noted.

The finding is significant in light of growing antimicrobial resistance, which the World Health Organization has described as a global public health threat that kills more than 4.5 million people worldwide each year.

“The antibiotic resistance crisis that we’re currently facing represents a major threat to how we practice medicine,” the researchers told Fox News Digital.

“We need to prevent and treat infection if we are to continue to have unfettered access to surgeries, hip replacements, cancer chemotherapy, the treatment of premature infants, etc. — consequently, we need new antibiotic drugs to do this over the long term.”

Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox News senior medical analyst, applauded the discovery.

“Artificial intelligence promises to improve new drug targets, including for antibiotics — and in the meantime, research at McMaster in Canada has found a new class of antibiotics,” he told Fox News Digital.

Dr. Stephen Vogel, a family medicine physician with PlushCare, a virtual health platform with primary care, therapy and weight management options, said this discovery represents a “promising answer” to tackle infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria.

“Because this microbe can kill bacteria in a way that it can’t evolve to evade, due to its protein production system called the ribosome, it has the potential to be a durable and lasting choice for a large variety of deadly bacterial infections,” the North Carolina-based doctor told Fox News Digital.

Looking ahead, the McMaster researchers will investigate ways to modify and produce the newly discovered molecule for use in clinical settings, a process that will require significant time and resources.

Italian archaeologists uncover surprise Jewish mikveh in ancient city

A 1,600-year-old Jewish bath, also known as a mikveh, was recently uncovered in Italy – and the find is the oldest of its kind in Europe.

On March 10, Italian officials announced the discovery, which was found at the archaeological site of Ostia Antica last summer.

In a statement translated from Italian to English, the Ostia Antica Archaeological Park described the mikveh as being a “small semi-underground room with a well underneath.”

Pictures released by officials show ancient stairs leading down to what was once used as a ritual bath. The steps show “notable traces of wear,” according to the statement, and are “flanked by two masonry shoulders covered inside with hydraulic plaster.”

“In the north-eastern corner, immediately above the northern abutment, there is a through hole in the masonry, probably intended to house a pipeline for the supply of water,” the statement says.

The well’s diameter measures roughly 3.5 feet and is “crowned by a brick ring probably added at a later time, certainly intended for the collection of groundwater.”

As archaeologists dug deeper, they also uncovered a lamp from either the 5th or 6th centuries A.D. – roughly the same age as the mikveh.

The lamp was decorated with the image of a menorah and a lulav, or a palm branch associated with the Jewish holiday of Sukkot – and the combination of all the above discoveries pointed to the site’s use as a mikveh.

“The walls covered with hydraulic plaster, the presence of a groundwater collection well…and the discovery of the lamp with Jewish symbols at the bottom of the well…leads us to hypothesize an interpretation of it as a Jewish ritual bath,” the statement said.

“Intended for people to dive (but also objects) for purification purposes, [mikvehs] generally appear as rectangular basins, in most cases covered, dug into the ground and covered with hydraulic plaster, with a row of steps that occupy their entire width, connected directly or indirectly to a spring, a well or a rainwater collection tank,” the press release described.

Mikvehs are used by Jews to achieve ritual purity, such as during a religious conversion, while cleaning utensils or while preparing for a wedding. The latest discovery is the only ancient Roman-era mikveh found in Europe.

The only other ancient mikveh in Europe is located in Palazzo Bianca in Syracuse, Sicily, which was “probably built near the local synagogue between the 6th and 7th centuries AD,” the release stated. That places it after the fall of Rome in 476 A.D., which the Ostia Antica mikveh appears to predate.

Though few ancient mikvehs survive in Europe, they undoubtedly existed. Historians say that the decline of mivkehs can be pointed to the Roman persecution of Jews in the first century.

“Widely spread in Judea, Galilee and Idumea in the Herodian age, particularly within residential buildings, they progressively decreased in the 1st century until they almost completely disappeared at the beginning of the 2nd, in connection with the full Romanization of the region following the destruction of the Temple in the year 70 AD and the subsequent repression of Bar Kokhba in 135 AD,” the release said.

Alessandro Giuli, the Italian Minister of Culture, said that the recent discovery “strengthens the historical awareness of this place as a true crossroads of coexistence and exchange of cultures, cradle of tolerance between different peoples who found their union in Roman civilization.”

“It represents a unique one in the Roman Mediterranean area outside the Land of Israel and attests to how deep-rooted the Jewish presence was in the heart of Roman times,” Giuli noted.

In a statement, Victor Fadlun, the president of the Jewish Community of Rome, said that the discovery brought on “emotion and pride.”

Before Skype officially shuts down May 27, 2025, it’s a smart move to save your data and prepare for a transition to another platform. Here’s how to do it:

Sign in with your Skype (Microsoft) account.
