Fox News Politics: DeSantis Calls on Congress to Rein in Courts

DeSantis Urges Congress to ‘Strip’ Judges of Immigration Jurisdiction

As aspects of President Donald Trump’s agenda are stymied by judges amid legal challenges, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has suggested that Congress could strip federal courts of jurisdiction.

“Congress has the authority to strip jurisdiction of the federal courts to decide these cases in the first place. The sabotaging of President Trump’s agenda by ‘resistance’ judges was predictable — why no jurisdiction-stripping bills tee’d up at the onset of this Congress?” DeSantis wrote in a Wednesday post on X.

When someone responded by asking how such a move could pass when 60 votes would be needed to push it through the Senate, DeSantis replied, “Attach it to a ‘must pass’ bill…”…Read more

New bird flu outbreak reported in Mississippi, infecting more than 47K chickens

0

A new bird flu outbreak has been confirmed as the virus continues to spread across the U.S.

The deadly H7N9 strain was detected on a poultry farm in Noxubee, Mississippi, last week, for the first time since 2017.

The infection of 47,654 commercial broiler-breeder chickens was confirmed on March 13 by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).

Samples of the flock were tested at the Mississippi Veterinary Research & Diagnostic Laboratory and came back positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, the State of Mississippi Board of Animal Health announced in a press release on March 12.

The affected area has been quarantined and birds on the property have been depopulated to prevent spread.

None of the birds from the flock have entered the food system, according to the Mississippi board.

“The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with state animal health and wildlife officials, is conducting a comprehensive epidemiological investigation and enhanced surveillance in response to the detection,” WOAH wrote in its report.

The H5N1 strain of bird flu has caused the most damage to poultry in recent years, as well as the death of one person, although H7N9 has had a “high death rate for humans worldwide,” according to Reuters.

The strain has reportedly killed 616 of the 1,568 people infected globally since its first detection in China in 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported.

Neither of the two forms of bird flu have been found to transmit easily from person to person.

Congressman calls for Zuckerberg to answer on dealings with China

0

Congressman Ro Khanna, D-Calif., is calling for Mark Zuckerberg to appear before the congressional oversight committee to address accusations about his efforts to create censorship tools for China.

The demand comes in the wake of explosive allegations made in a new memoir by a former Meta employee. Here’s what Khanna told me this morning:

“I think Mr. Zuckerberg needs to appear in front of my congressional oversight committee to answer questions about these allegations with China.”

Shocking revelations from inside Meta

Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former director of global public policy at Facebook (now Meta), has penned a tell-all book titled “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism.” The memoir paints a damning picture of Meta’s leadership, particularly focusing on Zuckerberg’s alleged attempts to gain access to the Chinese market.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

“This is all pushed by an employee terminated eight years ago for poor performance. We do not operate our services in China today,” a Meta spokesperson said. “It is no secret we were once interested in doing so as part of Facebook’s effort to connect the world. This was widely reported beginning a decade ago. We ultimately opted not to go through with the ideas we’d explored, which Mark Zuckerberg announced in 2019.”

META’S AI FUMBLES BIG ON BIDEN AND TRUMP

Zuckerberg’s China strategy unveiled

Zuckerberg’s China strategy, as revealed by Sarah Wynn-Williams, was far more extensive and controversial than previously known. According to her account, the Meta CEO went to extraordinary lengths to persuade the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to grant Meta permission to operate within China’s borders. Zuckerberg’s efforts reportedly included providing detailed briefings to CCP officials on cutting-edge technologies, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence.

Furthermore, Meta allegedly collaborated directly with the CCP to develop custom-made censorship tools tailored to the party’s specifications. Perhaps most alarmingly, Wynn-Williams claims that Zuckerberg attempted to conceal these cooperative efforts with the CCP from the U.S. Congress, raising serious questions about transparency and potential legal implications.

META MAKES MAJOR MOVE BACK TO FREE SPEECH AND ENDS THIRD-PARTY FACT-CHECKING PROGRAM

Meta’s response and past statements

Meta has refuted the claims, stating that they haven’t seen the book and that the former employee was terminated in 2017. The company spokesperson referenced Zuckerberg’s 2019 speech at Georgetown University, where he claimed that despite his efforts, they could never reach an agreement with China on the terms of operation. We reached out to Meta for a response to our article but did not hear back before our deadline. Here is some of what he said back then:

“It’s one of the reasons we don’t operate Facebook, Instagram or our other services in China,” Zuckerberg said. “I wanted our services in China because I believe in connecting the whole world and I thought we might help create a more open society. I worked hard to make this happen. But we could never come to agreement on what it would take for us to operate there, and they never let us in. And now we have more freedom to speak out and stand up for the values we believe in and fight for free expression around the world.”

The call for Zuckerberg to testify before Congress underscores the gravity of these allegations. Officials in Spain push for Canary Islands tourist tax as judge strikes it down

With European cities grappling with overtourism, some have implemented various tourist taxes while others debate introducing a levy.

A community in the Canary Islands, a group of Spanish islands off the coast of Africa, is seeking to implement a tax that would fund infrastructure projects to handle the numerous tourists.

Onalia Bueno, the mayor of Mogán, said “the tourists who stay in the municipality contribute to paying what proportionally corresponds to them for the services and activities they enjoy during their stay,” the Irish Independent reported.

“Mogán does not turn its back on tourism but quite the opposite. We embrace it and expect it with quality services,” Bueno added.

Judge Francisco José Gómez de Lorenzo-Cáceres said the tax created “an inappropriate and disproportionate burden” and should have been regulated by a formal law, the Canarian Weekly reported.

A spokesperson for Mogán City Council confirmed that the group will appeal the decision, the Independent reported.

Last year, 9.9 million tourists visited the Canary Islands between January and September, according to the Spanish National Statistics Institute.

Pope’s condition improves, no longer dependent on mechanical ventilation: Vatican

0

Pope Francis’s condition continued to improve Wednesday and he hasn’t needed to use the noninvasive mechanical ventilation to help him breathe at night, the Vatican said.

The 88-year-old pontiff is also reducing his reliance on high-flow supplemental oxygen during the day, the Vatican said in a medical bulletin. His double pneumonia infection, while not completely eliminated, is under control, the Holy See press office said.

Francis celebrated Mass on Wednesday, which is an important feast day for the Catholic Church and is the anniversary of his installation as pope 12 years ago.

Jillian Michaels says ‘extend your lifespan up to 7 years’ by walking 150 minutes

0

While various factors contribute to health, fitness remains exceptionally important, according to fitness expert Jillian Michaels, a supporter of the Make America Healthy Again movement.

“Fitness is the No. 1 form of preventative medicine,” the Miami-based host of “Keeping It Real Podcast” told Fox News Digital during an on-camera interview. (See the video at the top of this article.)

Michaels said she supports efforts to improve nutrition, highlighting HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s push to reform FDA regulations on food additives. She stressed that exercise, however, is ultimately up to the individual.

FEDERAL DIETARY GUIDELINES WILL SOON CHANGE FOR AMERICANS, HHS AND USDA ANNOUNCE

“This is not new news, and this is really where we have to encourage people to take agency … when it comes to exercise, this is really where we need to pick ourselves up by the bootstraps and start moving, even if it’s just having a daily step goal,” Michaels said.

“Fitness is the No. 1 form of preventative medicine,” Jillian Michaels (pictured) told Fox News Digital. (Don Flood)

More than 100 million adults are living with obesity and more than 22 million have severe obesity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Between August 2021 and August 2023, 40.3% of US adults above the age of 20 were considered obese.

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health

As a former celebrity trainer, Michaels advises people to do more than the “bare minimum” — and walking can be the best way to start getting in shape.

“One hundred and fifty minutes of walking a week has been shown to extend your lifespan by up to seven years. Something simple like that goes such a long way,” she said.

Michaels (pictured) said people should not focus on doing the bare minimum, but instead should start with a simple workout like walking to get into shape. (Donald Kravitz/Getty Images)

“I worry about false messages of lethargy. In other words, ‘just do the bare minimum’ – I don’t love that messaging because it implies that’s all somebody can do. That’s simply not true,” she went on.

“Don’t be intimidated, don’t be overwhelmed. I know you’re worried about cost. I know you’re worried about time. I know you’re worried that you’re not fit enough to do some of these things that you’re hearing from people like myself.”

Starting with a simple goal of 5,000 steps a day and using a walking pad is a great way to begin, according to the expert.

Jillian Michaels offers simple workout tips.

Starting with a goal of 5,000 steps a day is an easy way to get started, Michaels advised during an on-camera interview with Fox News Digital. (Fox News Digital)

“[Walking pads] are a couple of hundred bucks,” she said. “Put them under a stand-up desk or right by a kitchen counter, and you can shuffle around working, and you will hit those 5,000 steps no problem, every single day.”

Michaels said her morning routine looks a bit different each day, but she tries to stay consistent with a few things.

Whether friend or foe, flyers might be unsure who they can trust when it comes to getting their seat stolen on a plane.

One passenger heading from Chicago to New York City took to Reddit to share a “seat stealer” story.

In the forum “r/delta,” the user said that they went to an Irish bar in the Chicago Midway International Airport for a drink and began chatting with a fellow patron.

FLIGHT PASSENGER SHARES ‘INFURIATING’ MOMENT WHEN MAN INTRUDES ON HER LEG SPACE: ‘PLEASE DON’T DO THIS’

“Joked around with the guy next to me about his weak-looking old-fashioned, to which he rolled his eyes and agreed with me, also showing his $30 tab for said poor drink. He left for the lounge after getting [a] notification,” the person wrote.

The user said they and their spouse had been upgraded to first class.

“Got on the plane and my bar buddy was in our seat. I showed him my ticket and he moved aside. I said, nooo sorry we have both seats. He mumbled and moved back to the first row of comfort plus,” the user wrote in the post.

A Reddit user (not pictured) shared that a “bar buddy” attempted to seat-squat in first class after grabbing drinks at the airport bar prior to the flight.  (iStock)

“He wasn’t rude, but it was so awkward. I’m like, bro I thought we were friends,” the post concluded.

Reddit users took to the comments section to discuss the encounter.

“You aren’t friends. He’s a seat stealer. Don’t call a seat stealer a friend,” commented one blunt user.

Another user added, “It astounds me the people who think they can get away with sneaking into an entirely different class of service like that.”

“You aren’t friends. He’s a seat stealer. Don’t call a seat stealer a friend,” commented one blunt user. (iStock)

“I bet this wasn’t his first time. People do this because they know they can get away with it or have to sit in their assigned seat at worst,” said one Redditor.

“Sounds like homeboy was a bit tipsy. Surprised he was able to board,” another person wrote.

“Small world,” a user commented.

“Who steals seats, knowing it can just be shown that it’s not their seat and they’d be told to move. It’s wild,” added a user.

“I don’t understand why these people think the FAs [flight attendants] won’t notice someone in a FC seat that isn’t supposed to be there,” said another.

The term “seat squatters” has been used to refer to those who rob the seats that were selected and paid for by other travelers. (iStock)

Brandon Blewett, Texas-based author of the book “How to Avoid Strangers on Airplanes,” told Fox News Digital that he sees more people encountering airplane seat squatters.

“Let the flight attendant handle it. Nobody wants to go viral in a reel titled, ‘Passenger meltdown at 30,000 feet,'” Blewett advised.

He said sitting in someone else’s seat can cause disruptions to an entire flight.

“[Squatter] encounters often lead to delays that often cascade, leading to missed connections and frustrated passengers throughout the cabin,” Blewett added.
