New York confirms first case of new mpox strain

0

The New York State Department of Health issued a health advisory Wednesday about the emergence of a new strain of mpox (formerly monkeypox).

The first case of mpox clade Ib in New York State was confirmed in a symptomatic individual who had recently traveled from Africa.

The present risk to the public remains low, the department noted, and there are no additional known community cases of this strain in New York State currently.

IS MPOX THE NEXT COVID? INFECTIOUS DISEASE EXPERTS ADDRESS PANDEMIC POTENTIAL

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald shared that the infected individual is under the care of a physician and isolated “until the full resolution of symptoms.”

“There is no known local transmission of mpox clade Ib in the community where the individual lives or anywhere within New York State,” he said in a statement.

McDonald added that the JYNNEOS vaccine, which is a two-dose preventative vaccine series for mpox, is “expected to be effective” against this new strain.

“[It is] available for individuals at risk with the standing order I signed last year,” he noted. “There is no immediate risk to the general public.”

The health department added in its advisory that individuals should inquire with their local pharmacy or healthcare provider about vaccine availability as they continue to “monitor and maintain the situation.”

Mpox is “rarely fatal,” according to the department, but can be dangerous for people with immunocompromising conditions, as well as older adults, young children and pregnant women.

Symptoms can include rashes that progress to “painful skin lesions,” in addition to swollen lymph nodes, fever, sore throat, headaches, back pain, low energy and muscle aches, the department listed.

There is a “high likelihood of transmission” until these lesions scab over, which means infected individuals are encouraged to isolate until new skin forms at the lesion site.

“There is no immediate risk to the general public.”

Mpox can spread through close, intimate contact with sores, scabs or rashes, the department stated, as well as through the respiratory droplets, saliva or mucus of an infected person.

Those who plan to travel to areas with reported cases of mpox should consider being vaccinated with the two doses of JYNNEOS, experts recommend.

Dr. Myles Druckman, global medical director at International SOS in California, told Fox News Digital that there have been reports of this strain in several countries in Central and Eastern Africa.

“We’re finding that other countries have also reported travel-associated cases of clade I, including Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Oman, Pakistan, South Sudan, Sweden, Thailand, the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe,” he noted.

“Cases of this strain are expected due to the ongoing outbreak in multiple countries and the risks associated with global travel.”

“It’s important to recognize that cases of this strain are expected due to the ongoing outbreak in multiple countries and the risks associated with global travel.”

Mpox can be infectious for up to four days before symptoms occur, but it is most contagious from the time symptoms appear until about two to four weeks later, according to Druckman.

The expert emphasized that vaccination is recommended for high-risk individuals, such as healthcare workers with high exposure or people with weakened immune systems.

“Prevention of mpox is mainly through vaccination and avoiding skin-to-skin contact with others – especially those with symptoms or visible outbreaks – and observing good personal hygiene and washing hands well and frequently,” he added.

Trump’s nominee for small business chief primed for final vote after clearing procedural hurdle

0

President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Small Business Administration, former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, passed a key procedural vote in the Senate on Thursday, clearing the path for her final confirmation vote.

The Senate’s vote this afternoon to invoke cloture ended the debate on the Georgia Republican’s nomination, as she now moves on to the confirmation stage.

The final cloture vote was 51-43 in favor of invoking cloture.

“Like President Trump, Senator Loeffler left behind a successful career in the private sector to advance the America First agenda,” Loeffler spokeswoman Caitlin O’Dea told Fox News on Jan. 28.

TRUMP’S COMMERCE NOMINEE PASSES KEY HURDLE

Should she be confirmed, she will continue the practice of donating her federal salary to charities and nonprofits across the country — and put her full focus on working to make the Small Business Administration a gateway to the American Dream for entrepreneurs across the country.”

Loeffler, whose net worth is estimated at roughly $1 billion, previously donated her annual Senate salary of $174,000 between 2019 and 2021 to more than 40 Georgia charities and nonprofits.

Those organizations included food banks, faith groups and organizations opposed to abortion, foster care/adoption groups as well as organizations promoting health care, agriculture, education, law enforcement and disaster relief.

Loeffler previously worked at several top financial firms, including Intercontinental Exchange. Her husband, Jeffrey Sprecher, whom she met at ICE, is the current chairman of the New York Stock Exchange.

Loeffler also previously bought a minority stake in the WNBA Atlanta Dream, but is reportedly no longer associated with the team.

Loeffler also sparred with Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass, during her confirmation hearing over the Trump administration’s announcement that it would freeze federal funds and grants.

TRUMP LANDS KEY TULSI GABBARD CONFIRMATION FOLLOWING UPHILL SENATE BATTLE

After Trump fired SBA inspector general Hannibal Ware in January, Markey — the top Democrat on the Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee – expressed anger and called for a pause on Loeffler’s confirmation consideration.

Markey said the process should be halted “either until Inspector General Ware is reinstated or until a qualified and impartial nominee to replace him is confirmed by the Senate.”

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, the committee’s chairwoman, called Loeffler the “perfect person for the job” in an Osceola Sentinel-Tribune column.

“Throughout her career, she rose through the ranks at multiple companies due to her determination and grit. She also started many businesses and knows what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur,” said Ernst.

“Most importantly, she knows what it means to be overrun by Washington’s bureaucratic overreach — and that the government must instead get out of the way so businesses can thrive.”

People visiting the Sunshine State may be in for a surprise as mysterious balls are washing ashore in South Florida.

Tar balls are popping up from Port Everglades to Palm Beach along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, the Associated Press reported.

The balls consist of dark pieces of oil, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Former Hamas hostage Daniella Gilboa was apparently forced to fake her own death for a propaganda video. In an interview with Israel’s Channel 12, Orly Gilboa, Daniella’s mother, detailed the horrifying ordeal.

“One of the captors just came to her with a camera and said, ‘Daniella, today we’re going to film you dead.’  She of course pleaded for her life and asked him not to do it,” Orly Gilboa told Channel 12. Gilboa also said that her daughter was covered in debris and powder to make it seem like she was killed in an Israeli airstrike.

In November 2024, Hamas claimed that Gilboa was killed in an Israeli airstrike, producing the video of her “dead body” as proof. However, Gilboa was in fact alive and was released from captivity on Jan. 25, 2025, alongside Liri Albag, Naama Levy and Karina Ariev.

Released Israeli hostage Daniella Gilboa, a soldier who was seized from her army base in southern Israel during the deadly Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas, is embraced by her parents after being released as part of a ceasefire and a hostages-prisoners swap deal between Hamas and Israel, in an unknown location, in a handout photo obtained by Reuters on Jan. 25, 2025.  (Israel Defense Forces/Handout via REUTERS)

Following Hamas’ release of the video, the IDF said in a statement that it was investigating the situation. The IDF also condemned the release of the video, saying “Hamas continues to engage in psychological terror and act with extreme brutality.”

Hamas made videos of multiple hostages, including Yarden Bibas, whose wife and two young sons were also kidnapped on Oct. 7, 2023. Bibas is seen in the Hamas video, which was released in November 2023, breaking down as he is told that his family was killed. The fate of Bibas’ wife, Shiri, and their sons, Ariel and Kfir, remains unknown.

Gilboa, Albag, Levy and Ariev were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists from an IDF base in southern Israel during the attacks on Oct. 7, 2023. Agam Berger, who was taken hostage with the other female soldiers, was held for an extra week alone. She was released from Hamas captivity on Jan. 30, 2025.

HAMAS SAYS IT WILL FREE MORE ISRAELI HOSTAGES ON SATURDAY AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED

On the day she was taken hostage, Gilboa was shot in the leg, but the bullet was not removed during her time in captivity.

In an exclusive interview with Ynet, Ran Gilboa, Daniela’s father, called his daughter “a hero who returned from hell.” He also revealed that for two days after his daughter’s kidnapping, his family did not know if she was alive or dead.

“Their captors gave them more food in the days leading up to their release. They were only told they would be freed three days before it happened,” Ran Gilboa told Ynet.

Israelis were stunned by the condition of three hostages released last week, Or Levy, Eli Sharabi, and Ohad Ben Ami, as the men appeared emaciated. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that this “would not be ignored.” Additionally, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that the “emaciated and pained” men were a visual representation of a “crime against humanity.”

ISRAELI CABINET BACKS TRUMP’S DEMAND FOR HAMAS TO RELEASE ALL HOSTAGES BY SATURDAY DEADLINE

Hamas and Israel were engaged in a ceasefire. However, the terrorist organization threatened to stop hostage releases. President Donald Trump then gave Hamas a deadline of Saturday, Feb. 15, at 12 p.m. to release the remaining hostages.

“If all the Gaza hostages aren’t returned by Saturday at 12 p.m., I would say cancel the ceasefire,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “Let all hell break out. Israel can override it.”

Trump stressed that Hamas needs to release “all of them, not in drips and drabs.”

Israel’s security cabinet backed President Trump’s threat, and Prime Minister Netanyahu said in a statement that if the hostages are not released by the deadline, they “will resume intense combat until Hamas is decisively defeated.”

On Thursday, Hamas announced it would free three more Israeli hostages as originally planned, according to the Associated Press.

Screenshot-scanning malware discovered on Apple App Store in first-of-its-kind attack

0

Every tech expert will tell you the App Store is safer than Google Play Store. Some might even claim it is impossible to download a malicious app from the App Store, but they are wrong.

While I admit the App Store is a secure and tightly controlled ecosystem, it cannot completely shield you. Security researchers have found that hackers are targeting several apps on the App Store to spread malware that steals information from screenshots saved on a device.

The issue also affects those downloading apps from the Google Play Store.

How the malware works and what makes it different

According to researchers at Kaspersky, this malware campaign is more advanced than typical info stealers, both in how it works and how it spreads. Instead of relying on social engineering tricks to get users to grant permissions like most banking trojans or spyware, this malware hides inside seemingly legitimate apps and slips past Apple and Google’s security checks.

One of its standout features is Optical Character Recognition. Instead of stealing stored files, it scans screenshots saved on the device, extracts text and sends the information to remote servers.

Once installed, the malware operates stealthily, often activating only after a period of dormancy to avoid raising suspicion. It employs encrypted communication channels to send stolen data back to its operators, making it difficult to trace. Plus, it spreads through deceptive updates or hidden code within app dependencies, an approach that helps it evade initial security screenings by app store review teams.

The infection vectors vary between Apple and Google’s ecosystems. On iOS, the malware is often embedded within apps that initially pass Apple’s rigorous review process but later introduce harmful functionality through updates. On Android, the malware can exploit sideloading options, but even official Google Play apps have been found to carry these malicious payloads, sometimes hidden within SDKs (software development kits) supplied by third-party developers.

THE HIDDEN COSTS OF FREE APPS: YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

What’s being stolen, and who’s responsible?

The scope of stolen information is alarming. This malware primarily targets crypto wallet recovery phrases but is also capable of exfiltrating login credentials, payment details, personal messages, location data and even biometric identifiers. Some versions are designed to harvest authentication tokens, allowing attackers to access accounts even if users change their passwords.

The apps serving as malware carriers include ComeCome, ChatAi, WeTink, AnyGPT and more. These range from productivity tools to entertainment and utility apps. In some cases, malicious developers create these apps with full knowledge of the malware’s purpose. In others, the issue appears to be a supply chain vulnerability, where legitimate developers unknowingly integrate compromised SDKs or third-party services that introduce malicious code into their applications.

We reached out to Apple for a comment but did not hear back before our deadline.

Apple’s response to screenshot-scanning malware discovered in App Store

Apple has removed the 11 iOS apps mentioned in Kaspersky’s report from the App Store. Furthermore, they discovered that these 11 apps shared code signatures with 89 other iOS apps, all of which had been previously rejected or removed for violating Apple’s policies, resulting in the termination of their developer accounts.

Apps requesting access to user data such as Photos, Camera or Location must provide relevant functionality or face rejection. They must also clearly explain their data usage when prompting users for permission. iOS privacy features ensure users always control whether their location information is shared with an app. Also, starting in iOS 14, the PhotoKit API — which allows apps to request access to a user’s Photos library — added additional controls to let users select only specific photos or videos to share with an app instead of providing access to their entire library.

The App Store Review Guidelines mandate that developers are responsible for ensuring their entire app, including ad networks, analytics services and third-party SDKs, complies with the guidelines. Developers must carefully review and choose these components. Apps must also accurately represent their privacy practices, including those of the SDKs they use, in their privacy labels.

In 2023, the App Store rejected over 1.7 million app submissions for failing to meet its stringent privacy, security and content standards. It also rejected 248,000 app submissions found to be spam, copycats or misleading and prevented 84,000 potentially fraudulent apps from reaching users.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

What Google is doing to stop malware

A Google spokesperson tells CyberGuy:

“All of the identified apps have been removed from Google Play and the developers have been banned. Android users are automatically protected from known versions of this malware by Google Play Protect, which is on by default on Android devices with Google Play Services.”

However, it is important to note that Google Play Protect may not be enough. Historically, it isn’t 100% foolproof at removing all known malware from Android devices. Here’s why:

What Google Play Protect can do:

  • Scans apps from the Google Play Store for known threats.
  • Warns you if an app behaves suspiciously.
  • Detects apps from unverified sources (sideloaded APKs).
  • Can disable or remove harmful apps.

What Google Play Protect can’t do:

  • It does not provide real-time protection against advanced threats like spyware, ransomware or phishing attacks.
  • It does not scan files, downloads or links outside of Play Store apps.
  • It may miss malware from third-party app stores or sideloaded apps.
  • It lacks features like VPN protection, anti-theft tools and privacy monitoring.

HOW SCAMMERS USE YOUR PERSONAL DATA FOR FINANCIAL SCAMS AND HOW TO STOP THEM

5 ways users can protect themselves from such malware

1. Use strong antivirus software: Installing strong antivirus software can add an extra layer of protection by scanning apps for malware, blocking suspicious activity and alerting you to potential threats. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

2. Stick to trusted developers and well-known apps: Even though malware has been found in official app stores, users can still minimize their risk by downloading apps from reputable developers with a long track record. Before installing an app, check its developer history, read multiple reviews and look at the permissions it requests. If an app from an unknown developer suddenly gains popularity but lacks a strong review history, approach it with caution.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

3. Review app permissions carefully: Many malicious apps disguise themselves as legitimate tools but request excessive permissions that go beyond their stated purpose. For example, a simple calculator app should not need access to your contacts, messages or location. If an app asks for permissions that seem unnecessary, consider it a red flag and either deny those permissions or avoid installing the app altogether. Go to your phone settings and check app permissions on your iPhone and Android.

4. Keep your device and apps updated: Cybercriminals exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software to distribute malware. Always keep your operating system and apps updated to the latest versions, as these updates often contain critical security patches. Enabling automatic updates ensures that you stay protected without having to manually check for new versions.

5. Be wary of apps that promise too much: Many malware-infected apps lure users by offering features that seem too good to be true — such as free premium services, extreme battery optimizations or AI-powered functionality that appears unrealistic. If an app’s claims sound exaggerated or its download numbers skyrocket overnight with questionable reviews, it’s best to avoid it. Stick to apps with a transparent development team and verifiable functionalities.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR PRIVATE DATA FROM THE INTERNET

Kurt’s key takeaway

The new malware campaign highlights the need for stricter vetting processes, continuous monitoring of app behavior post-approval and greater transparency from app stores regarding security risks. While Apple and Google have removed the malicious apps upon detection, the fact that they made it onto the platform in the first place exposes a gap in the existing security framework. As cybercriminals refine their methods, app stores must evolve just as quickly or risk losing the trust of the very users they claim to protect.

Spooky deep-sea anglerfish caught on camera by Spanish researchers near Canary Islands

0

A deep-sea anglerfish was recently caught on camera in a rare moment, delighting social media users while scaring others.

Condrik Tenerife, a Spanish conservation organization, and marine photographer David Jara Borguña, shared footage of the unusual fish in a Feb. 5 Instagram post. The post described the prehistoric sea creature as “a legendary fish that few people have had the privilege of observing alive.”

“Apparently, the existing records to date correspond to larvae, dead adult specimens, or recordings made with submarines,” the post, which was translated from Spanish, read.

Video shows the remarkable and menacing-looking fish swimming out of its deep-sea depths in light-filled water, allowing it to be stunningly observed outside its pitch-black habitat.

“It is a true predator of the depths, inhabiting the seabed between [600 and 6,000 feet] deep, and uses its dorsal appendage filled with bioluminescent symbiotic bacteria as bait to attract its prey, just like in the popular movie ‘Finding Nemo,'” the post read.

The post noted that the fish was seen swimming vertically less than a mile off the coast of Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands. The Spanish researchers caught a glimpse of the spooky sea creature while looking for sharks.

It is unknown if the fish lived for much longer after the images were taken.

“The reason for its presence in such shallow waters is uncertain. It could be due to illness, an upwelling current, fleeing from a predator, etc.,” the post explained.

“This surprising discovery did not leave the crew indifferent and will be remembered forever,” researchers added.

The images left a mark on social media as well, as the post racked up nearly half a million likes on Instagram. Many of the users called the fish “nightmare fuel” in the comments section.

“Who let my sister out?” one commentator joked.

“Looks like he went up for a chicken sandwich and a coke,” another said in Spanish.

Others viewed the video with solemnity, with some pitying the fish and others wondering if it posed an ominous message.

It is rare for fish who live so deep in the ocean to wash up or be seen in shallow waters.

The threat of cancer looms large for many people, yet consumers can take certain smart and preventative steps to lower the risks.

Michelle Patidar, an integrative nutrition and cancer recovery coach in Chicago, recently shared in an Instagram post that she’s continuing her own fight against cancer even after surviving it — and the specific steps she’s taken since then.

In a recent video she posted on social media, Patidar shared a list of “things you will never find in my kitchen after being diagnosed with cancer at 32.”

FOODS TO EAT, AND NOT TO EAT, TO PREVENT CANCER, ACCORDING TO A DOCTOR AND NUTRITIONIST

The recovery coach said that after she finished her cancer treatments, she did a “total kitchen overhaul.”

She wrote, “But don’t get me wrong, I slowly made changes. As things ran out, I replaced them with non-toxic versions.”

“It took some time, but I feel so much more in control of my health knowing I eliminated harmful, toxic products from my kitchen!”

THE CANCER PREVENTION DIET: 6 SMARTS TIPS FROM A NUTRITIONIST ON WHAT TO EAT AND WHY

Here’s the full list of items that Patidar said she’s eliminated — and her replacements for them.

Items gone from her kitchen — and their replacements

1. Refined oil is replaced with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, ghee and grass-fed butter.

2. Nonstick cookware is replaced with stainless steel and cast-iron cookware.

3. Aluminum foil is replaced with non-bleached parchment paper.

4. Plastic containers and sandwich bags are replaced with glass containers and paper bags.

Patidar considered this one an “easy swap,” by the way, saying she tries to “say no to plastics as often as possible.”

5. Scented candles are replaced with “delicious” essential oils.

6. Plastic water bottles are replaced with glass and stainless steel.

7. Plastic cutting boards are replaced with wood cutting boards.

Patidar told Fox News Digital she’s “come to understand the importance of viewing health from a holistic perspective” as a seven-year cancer survivor.

“While nutrition and exercise are vital components, it’s crucial to consider other factors, such as our environment and the products we use daily,” she said.

“Our choices, including the cleaning products we use, the quality of indoor air and water, and the types of cookware we select play a significant role in our overall well-being.”

She added that “even seemingly innocuous items” such as plastic water bottles and storage containers can “contribute to our broader health picture.”

Focusing on “quality fats and oils” instead of processed foods has allowed Patidar to lower chronic inflammation, she reported — “crucial for cancer prevention and recovery.”

“Additionally, replacing candles with essential oils has improved my indoor air quality,” she said. “The ‘convenience’ of toxic products often carries a substantial penalty.”

Flight passenger ignites debate after being told to ‘climb over’ seatmate for bathroom break

Whether you prefer a window seat, an aisle seat or getting stuck in the middle on your next flight, access to the restroom usually isn’t a common concern.

A Reddit user recently posted about how taking a bathroom break became an issue, writing, “Okay so what’s the protocol when you need to get up and you’re in this seat?”

The post was subsequent to an apparent incident with an aisle seatmate with a potty response.

The traveler chronicled the dilemma and shared how they needed to exit the row in order to take a mid-flight bathroom break.

“During the flight, I needed to get up for the restroom. I asked the man beside me if I could get out and he went to move,” the Reddit user wrote.

The middle-seat passenger was ready to stand without a fuss, the user said.

But to the window-seat traveler’s surprise, the aisle-seat passenger didn’t stand up and presented a surprising alternative.

“When the man in the aisle looked over at me, he made a motion for me to go through the gap in front of me,” the user wrote.

This situation caused the Reddit user to become perplexed.

“The two men in the seats in front of me both have their laptops open, and frankly I didn’t fancy clambering over other humans just because aisle man was inconvenienced,” the traveler continued in their post.

Again, the user said duty was calling and they needed to use the facilities. Regarding the suggestion to climb over, the flyer flushed that idea down the toilet.

“I told him no, I won’t. He motions again and tells me to go around,” the user wrote.

After a bit of back and forth, the passenger in the window seat finally let it out and was emphatic about the need to use the bathroom.

“I said no, I won’t fit and please will you let me out,” added the traveler.

“Who is in the right here?” the post continued.

Reddit users responded to the thread, with some sharing thoughts on how the situation should have been handled.

“It is aisle’s responsibility to move for people in their own row,” the person wrote.

Other replies implied that an aisle seat passenger knows that it’s part of the deal when seated there.

One user said they choose the aisle seat out of convenience, and it’s understood that seatmates will likely need a bathroom break.

“I love the aisle, I can get up to go to the bathroom whenever I want, and when the middle/window needs to go to the restroom it’s a great excuse to stretch my legs,” the user wrote.

Others said they would have immediately rebuked the option of climbing over to use the restroom.

“Like, come on man, just get up!” a user replied on the thread.

If you’re seated in the window seat, there are ways to ask a seatmate to let you exit the row, according to an etiquette expert.

Always be courteous

If you feel nature calling, being pleasant is the best approach on a flight, said Pamela Eyring, president of The Protocol School of Washington with locations in Washington, D.C., and Columbia, South Carolina.

“Lean over, smile, get eye contact if possible and ask, ‘Could you please excuse me?’ Then unbuckle, then begin to stand as a non-verbal motion,” she added.

Then continue your attempt to stand.

“By beginning to stand, it physically alerts the person in the aisle (and middle) that you need to depart the row,” Eyring told Fox News Digital. “When you return, always say ‘thank you’ and smile.”

Eyring said the best time to exit a row is directly after the seat belt sign has been turned off and after the flight crew confirms it’s safe to move about the cabin.

“If it’s an emergency to use the lavatory and the seat belt sign is still on, use the call button to summon the flight attendant.”

“If you are not comfortable staying in that row, ask the flight attendant if there’s another seat you could move to.”
