NY Dems call Trump’s plan to shut down the DOE “illegal” and “unconstitutional.”

0

While the nation anticipates an executive order from President Donald Trump to dismantle the Department of Education, New York Democrats sparked a debate about its legality. The White House says cutting wasteful government funding is “not a crime in a court of law.”

Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Gov. Kathy Hochul, D-N.Y., held a press conference at a Manhattan public school this week, calling Trump’s plans for the Education Department “illegal” and “unconstitutional.” The White House said the Democrats are “gaslighting” Americans.

“Earlier this week, we learned that the Trump administration is drafting an executive order to shut down the Department of Education,” Gillibrand said on Sunday. “This would jeopardize thousands of New York jobs, and billions of dollars in federal funding for New York’s kids, teachers, families and schools. We’re here to show them that we are ready to fight for our kids, fight for our communities and fight for our schools.”

As Trump is expected to take steps this month to defund the Department of Education, Democrats began another week of Trump’s second term protesting the Department of Government Efficiency. The Trump administration dismissed the protests as an attempt “to recover from their embarrassing loss” in November.

“The Democrats have no plan on how to recover from their embarrassing loss, and it shows. Instead of working to become a party that focuses on the will of the people, they are hell-bent on keeping their heads in the sand and gaslighting on the widely supported mission of DOGE. Slashing waste, fraud, and abuse, and becoming better stewards of the American taxpayer’s hard-earned dollars might be a crime to Democrats, but it’s not a crime in a court of law,” White House principal deputy press secretary, Harrison Fields told Fox News Digital in a statement.

DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKER SAYS KIDS WILL BE IN TEACHERLESS CLASSROOMS, WON’T HAVE LUNCH IF DOGE, TRUMP GET THEIR WAY

Gillibrand on Sunday reminded New Yorkers that dismantling the Department of Education would require congressional approval.

“What he’s doing is illegal. It’s unconstitutional. It’s unconstitutional and illegal. It’s unconstitutional because Congress is the only body that is allowed to decide how the taxpayer dollars that New Yorkers send to Washington is spent.”

Hochul warned New Yorkers that they will pick up the tab if Trump shuts down the Department of Education.

“The largest part of your local property tax bill is your school taxes,” Hochul said. “If that money evaporates from the federal government, where are they going to go? This is going to hit homeowners and businesses, and I want them to be aware of this consequence.”

Hochul said defunding the Department of Education could deny students Pell Grants, a federally funded program that helps low-income students pay for college, and New York City’s public school nutrition programs, which provide free breakfast, lunch and after-school meals for students. Hochul urged New York Republicans to speak up in Washington for New York’s public school students.

“This is an outrage,” Gillibrand added. “The Trump administration is stealing money from our kids, from our teachers and from our schools. These are New York tax dollars.”

Hochul and Gillibrand join a growing coalition of Democrats speaking out against Trump’s education plans. Popular travel destination doubles controversial day-tripper tax, sparks reactions on social media

0

As tourists continue to flock to Venice, Italy, officials are doubling its “access fee” in an attempt to continue curbing overtourism for day-trippers.

Venice introduced a pilot program in 2024 to charge day-trippers a $5.17 (5 euros) entry fee that authorities hope will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days, Fox News Digital reported.

Simone Venturini, the city’s tourism councilor, recently spoke at the BIT tourism fair in Milan, sharing the program was successful, online news platform Metro reported.

ROME COULD CHARGE ENTRY TO HISTORIC LANDMARK IN LATEST ATTEMPT TO TACKLE OVERTOURISM

“The aim remains the same: create a new system to manage tourist flow and disincentivize day tripper tourism in several periods, in line with the delicate and unique nature of the city, to guarantee the respect that it merits,” said Venturini.

Starting April 18, visitors will officially pay the access fee of $5.17 if booked four days ahead, while arrivals booked last minute, within three days, doubles to $10.33 (10 euros), according to the city’s site.

The fee applies on select dates only to the Ancient City of Venice, not to the minor islands of the Venetian Lagoon.

Exemptions apply to residents, property owners, students, workers, persons with disabilities and children under 14 years of age.

The access fee will also be waived for visitors attending events such as the Venice Boat Show in May.

Approximately six million Americans traveled to Italy in 2023, according to the State Department.

Officials will also add increased security screens at eight different locations, including main cruise ship docking areas.

When the tax was first announced last year, tourists and residents took to social media to share reactions.

“Not a bad idea. I cannot imagine the trash and bodily fluids that many irresponsible tourists leave behind everyday,” said one user on X.

Another X user said, “I don’t blame them. It’s much hard work to keep the city maintained. Everything is in water.”

“I’d pay the 10 euros twenty times a year…it is worth it,” joked one.

Israeli cabinet backs Trump’s demand for Hamas to release all hostages

0

Israel’s security cabinet fully supports President Donald Trump’s demand that the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas release all of its hostages by noon on Saturday or that “all hell is going to break out,” an Israeli official told Fox News.

The declaration comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security cabinet Tuesday after Hamas announced it is delaying the next release of Israeli hostages.

“The decision I passed in the Cabinet unanimously is this: If Hamas does not return our hostages by Saturday noon – the ceasefire will end, and the IDF will resume intense combat until Hamas is decisively defeated,” Netanyahu said in a statement following the meeting.

“In light of Hamas’ announcement of its decision to violate the agreement and not release our hostages, I instructed the IDF last night to amass forces inside and around the Gaza Strip. This operation is currently underway and will be completed as soon as possible,” Netanyahu added.

“We also welcomed the President’s revolutionary vision for the future of Gaza,” Netanyahu said.

Trump said Monday if Hamas does not return all hostages by noon on Saturday, he will call for the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to be canceled and “let all hell break out.”

“If all the Gaza hostages aren’t returned by Saturday at 12 p.m., I would say cancel the ceasefire,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “Let all hell break out; Israel can override it.”

Trump stressed that Hamas needs to release “all of them — not in drips and drabs.”

“Saturday at 12pm and after that, I would say, all hell is going to break out,” Trump said.

Trump reiterated his demand on Tuesday and told reporters that he believes Hamas will listen to him.

A Hamas spokesperson said Monday that the terrorist group will delay the next planned release of hostages in the Gaza Strip after accusing Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement.

“Over the past three weeks, the resistance leadership has monitored the enemy’s violations and failure to fulfill its obligations under the agreement; including the delay in allowing the return of the displaced to the northern Gaza Strip, targeting them with direct shelling and gunfire in various areas across Gaza, and denying relief supplies of all kinds to enter as agreed, while the resistance has implemented all its obligations,” Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for Hamas’ military wing, said.

Israel and Hamas are in the midst of a six-week ceasefire, during which Hamas has committed to releasing 33 hostages captured in its Oct. 7, 2023 attack in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

The sides have carried out five swaps since the ceasefire went into effect last month, freeing 21 hostages and more than 730 Palestinian prisoners. The next exchange, scheduled for next Saturday, calls for three more Israeli hostages to be freed in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

iCloud scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, targeting unsuspecting users with urgent messages about their accounts. Our team recently received two suspicious iCloud emails. We want to share our experience and provide comprehensive steps on how to identify and protect yourself from these scams.

The anatomy of iCloud scams

iCloud scams typically follow a pattern designed to create a sense of urgency and fear. Let’s break down the two emails our team received below. Here is the urgent wording that the scammers used, “Payment Failure for iCloud Storage Renewal” and “iCloud Suspended. Fix it before Mon, 13 January 2025.” Both emails share common characteristics of phishing attempts, including urgent language, threats of account suspension or data loss, requests to update payment information, links to external websites and vague or incorrect account details. These emails are crafted to look legitimate, often mimicking Apple’s branding and tone. However, they contain several red flags that indicate they are scams.

How to identify iCloud scams

To protect yourself from falling victim to these scams, look out for these telltale signs:

  • Check the sender’s email address: Legitimate Apple emails will always come from “@apple.com” or “@icloud.com” domains. The scam email address is not even close to that.

  • Look for spelling and grammatical errors: Scam emails often contain mistakes that official communications wouldn’t have.
  • Be wary of urgent deadlines: Scammers create arbitrary deadlines to pressure you into acting quickly without thinking.
  • Verify account details: If the email mentions account information, check if it matches your actual iCloud details.
  • Hover over links without clicking: This allows you to preview the URL and check if it’s legitimate, as in the example below, which, as you can see, is not from Apple.

Steps to protect yourself

If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from Apple or iCloud, follow these steps:

  • Don’t click any links or download attachments: These could lead to phishing sites or install malware on your device.
  • Use strong antivirus software: Consider installing reputable antivirus software to help protect against malware. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.
  • Check your account directly: Instead of using links in the email, go directly to appleid.apple.com or check your device settings.
  • Update your Apple ID password: If you suspect your account may have been compromised, change your password immediately.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): 2FA adds an extra layer of security to your Apple ID.
  • Report the phishing attempt: Forward suspicious emails to reportphishing@apple.com.

  • Invest in personal data removal services: While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

THAT APPLE ID DISABLED MESSAGE? IT’S A DANGEROUS SCAM

What to do if you’ve been scammed

Follow these steps if you think you may have fallen for an iCloud scam.

1) Change your Apple ID password immediately: Ensure you create a strong, unique password that you haven’t used on other accounts.

2) Check for any unauthorized changes to your account settings or payment information: Go to account.apple.com and review any devices, personal information or security settings that look unfamiliar.

3) Contact Apple Support directly through official channels for assistance: Forward the suspicious email to reportphishing@apple.com or abuse@icloud.com to help Apple track and block these scams.

4) Monitor your financial accounts for any suspicious activity: If you provided payment information, cancel and replace your credit card immediately and pay close attention to even small unauthorized charges.

5) Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit reports: Report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission and Internet Crime Complaint Center to help combat these fraudulent activities.

6) Use an identity theft protection service: Identity theft companies can monitor personal information like your Social Security number, phone number and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft.

FBI’S NEW WARNING ABOUT AI-DRIVEN SCAMS THAT ARE AFTER YOUR CASH

Kurt’s key takeaways

Remember, Apple will never ask you to provide personal information, passwords or security codes via email, text message or phone call. If you’re ever in doubt about the legitimacy of a communication from Apple, always err on the side of caution and contact Apple directly through their official website or support channels. By staying vigilant and following these guidelines, you can better protect yourself from iCloud scams and keep your personal information secure. Don’t let the urgency of these messages cloud your judgment. Take a moment to verify before you act, and you’ll be much safer in the long run.

MAHA, RFK Jr. confirmation puts MMR childhood vaccines in spotlight

0

Amid RFK Jr.’s push to improve healthcare as part of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, there is a growing focus on vaccine transparency.

One of the most common childhood inoculations — the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine — has been a requirement for school attendance since its development in the 1970s.

Fox News medical contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier answered some frequently asked questions regarding the vaccine in a video sent to Fox News Digital. (See the video at the top of the article.)

MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE MOVEMENT

People often ask why the three vaccines are combined, which Saphier said is simply for convenience.

One of the most common childhood inoculations — the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine — has been a requirement for school attendance since its development in the 1970s. (iStock)

“From a public health standpoint, if the goal is to vaccinate as many children as possible to reach that herd immunity and keep these infections at bay, again, parents are more likely to only bring their child to the pediatrician that one time,” the doctor said.

“And on a child, isn’t it easier to give one injection as opposed to three separate injections?”

LARA TRUMP ON FOOD, HEALTH AND AMERICA’S CHILDREN: ‘WE WANT THE TRUTH’

Saphier also addressed some concerns about MMR vaccine side effects, including inflammatory reactions at the site of the injection, where the skin can become red and warm.

Children can also have low-grade fevers and feel irritable or lethargic, which is “likely to happen” even with each individual vaccine – not just when they are combined.

Kids can also have low-grade fevers and feel irritable or lethargic, which is “likely to happen” with any of the three individual vaccines, Saphier said. (iStock)

“The reality is there are always side effects when it comes to any sort of healthcare intervention,” she said in the video. “But with vaccines in particular, you can have the more mild side effects, and there are some severe, more rare side effects that are well-documented.”

The potential for autism being linked to vaccinations has been a deterrent for many parents when choosing to vaccinate their children, but Saphier said the “overwhelming majority” of “good research” shows no causal link.

BILL GATES LIKELY HAD AUTISM AS A CHILD, HE REVEALS: ‘WASN’T WIDELY UNDERSTOOD’

One of the largest studies, which was conducted in Denmark, found a lower risk of autism in more than 650,000 vaccinated children, the doctor noted.

The threat of autism being linked to vaccinations has been a deterrent for many parents, but Saphier said the “overwhelming majority” of “good research” shows no causal link. (iStock)

While the U.S. has a higher incidence of autism compared to other countries, specifically Europe, the doctor revealed that European nations have higher rates of MMR vaccine uptake.

“Isn’t it easier to give one injection as opposed to three separate injections?”

“The signs and symptoms [of autism] start to show around the time we’re giving all these vaccines, so it makes sense to kind of think they may be related,” she said.

“And it made sense to do as much research as we can to make sure there isn’t a link.”

MAHA MOMS CALL FOR ‘RIGOROUS TRANSPARENCY’ INTO HEALTH CONCERNS

“But I think we need to be looking really hard at our environment, what we’re ingesting, the pollutants, the toxins, everything in big agriculture, big pharma, in our food industry and everything else.”

Saphier suggested that a link to autism may be found after diving into the “harmful chemicals” consumed by Americans that other nations do not consume.

Rearview shot of three children looking out the window on a rainy day

Saphier suggested looking into environmental factors that could increase autism risk.

The doctor also said that medical agencies — such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics — should be “less stringent” on vaccination schedules, leaving the decision to the parents.

“It should be a conversation between the doctor and the patient.”

“If parents don’t want to give these vaccines when their babies are so little, I think it’s OK to have that conversation and let them wait until their child’s a little bit older before they head off to kindergarten,” said Saphier, who is a mother of three boys.

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health

“Because maybe at that time, you start to see signs of autism between about 1 to 3 years of age for the most part. So maybe let the parent get their child through that time, and if there aren’t signs of autism, then maybe they’ll feel better about … being able to vaccinate their children.”

Saphier said she supports returning autonomy to the parents when it comes to vaccines for children. (iStock)

“It should be a conversation between the doctor and the patient,” she said. “Unfortunately, during the COVID pandemic, the CDC and a lot of healthcare professionals really took away this conversation.”

“By putting the COVID vaccine and booster for children in the same basket as MMR and some of the other vaccines, when it comes to children, that was the biggest mistake they could have ever [made],” Saphier continued.

“That has caused more vaccine hesitancy and concern.”

Saphier expressed her hope that the MAHA movement will help identify safety signals in vaccines, which will “give parents the confidence they need to continue with the vaccine programs, because they really can save lives.”

Flight passenger ‘bullied’ after refusing to swap with seat squatter, triggers reactions on social media

0

An air traveler said they landed in an uncomfortable position aboard a flight after being “bullied” by other passengers due to a seat squatter situation.

A Reddit user created a thread on the forum r/unitedairlines detailing an apparent encounter with a seat squatter who attracted the attention of fellow passengers, but it was very clear whose side they were on.

“I walked over to my window seat to see a woman in my seat. I calmly explain she’s in my seat and she seems annoyed,” the Reddit user wrote.

The user said other passengers in the aisle are became “agitated,” so the user moved into another row to allow the other passengers to board and find their seats.

The woman who was “squatting” tried calling her daughter since she was the one who booked the seat, the user added.

“The two people in her row loudly ask why I can’t just take her seat. I just keep telling them I want my seat,” the user wrote.

The user said they remained calm and polite throughout the interaction but was left stunned by the response from the other individuals on the flight.

“I don’t get it I paid for my seat and it’s not my fault she was sitting in the wrong seat. I’ve never experienced such hostility from everyone around me,” the Reddit user wrote.

Other users on the thread shared their thoughts on the “hostile” travel encounter.

The same user continued, saying the rightful seat owner should have said, “‘I’ll take my assigned and paid for seat, maybe one of these other kind people will give you their window.’”

Another user shared a story about their own experience with a seat squatter.

“This is exactly what I did last year. A woman was sitting in our row (I had booked 6 seats for my family and I to travel together). She refused to move saying I was wrong,” the person commented.

“’I calmly told her, ‘Ma’am, if you show me your boarding pass, I’ll direct you to your seat, since mine says XXX seat on it.’ I also showed her my boarding pass. She got embarrassed and moved but she was nice enough to acknowledge that she was wrong. I was very kind and courteous and made sure I didn’t come off like I was blaming her, or she did it intentionally. But if she kept playing dumb, I would’ve called the FA.”

People on a plane

Not every seat squatting situation is intentional, which means how you interact with the squatters will differ depending on if it was an accident or if someone is trying to “pull a fast one.” (iStock)

Many users acknowledged the difference between someone who is an inexperienced flayer, someone accidentally sitting in the wrong seat, and someone who is “trying to pull a fast one.”

The rise in seat squatters on planes has continued in 2025, with more flight passengers catching people trying to rob their assigned seats.

Travel and etiquette experts have shared their concerns with the cheat hack, but just because someone is found in your seat, does not mean you should assume it was intentional.

Brandon Blewett, Texas-based author of “How to Avoid Strangers on Airplanes,” said that sometimes it’s understandable that people are found squatting, he told Fox News Digital previously.

“For example, if a family misses a connecting flight and gets rebooked with scattered seats, it’s reasonable for parents to sit together to manage a toddler — a setup most of us can sympathize with,” Blewett told Fox News Digital last month.

He also said that you can usually feel out the difference between an incidental squatter and someone who is trying to self-upgrade if they are unwilling to show their boarding pass.

ESA’s space telescope Euclid discovers ‘astonishing’ Einstein ring

0

The European Space Agency (ESA) said Monday that its Euclid space telescope has detected a rare bright halo of light around a nearby galaxy.

Known as an Einstein ring, the halo was captured in photos encircling a galaxy nearly 590 million light-years away, which is considered close by cosmic standards. A single light-year is measured at 5.8 trillion miles.

While astronomers have known about the galaxy where the phenomenon was captured for over a century, they were surprised when Euclid revealed the bright glowing ring,

Euclid blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida on July 1, 2023, to begin a six-year mission to explore the dark universe.

A sea of colorful stars and galaxies appear to swim in the vast blackness of space around a hazy halo at center stage. In the middle of the image, the fuzzy-looking bulb of light in a warm shade of yellow extends around a small bright spot, nestled within a thin light circle that appears to be drawn closely around it. But before the space telescope could begin its survey of the universe, scientists had to ensure everything onboard was working properly. During the early phase of testing, which took place in September 2023, Euclid sent images back to Earth.

The ESA said the images were deliberately out of focus, but in one of the images, Euclid Archive Scientist Bruno Altieri saw what he believed was a very special phenomenon and decided to look at it a bit closer.

“I look at the data from Euclid as it comes in,” Bruno said in a press release from the ESA. “Even from that first observation, I could see it, but after Euclid made more observations of the area, we could see a perfect Einstein ring. For me, with a lifelong interest in gravitational lensing, that was amazing.”

For most of the population out there, an Einstein Ring is an “extremely rare phenomenon,” the ESA said.

When a distant galaxy is observed through a telescope, the light from that galaxy may encounter another galaxy on its way to the telescope. When that happens, the foreground galaxy acts like a magnifying glass, and gravity causes the traveling light rays to bend. When light rays bend, scientists call that gravitational lensing, according to the ESA.

When the background galaxy, lensing galaxy and telescope are in perfect alignment, the image appears as a ring, also known as an Einstein Ring.

The galaxy, called NGC 6506, is about 590 million light-years away, and this is the first time the ring of light around its center has ever been detected.

“All strong lenses are special, because they’re so rare, and they’re incredibly useful scientifically,” Conor O’Riordan of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics said. “This one is particularly special, because it’s so close to Earth and the alignment makes it very beautiful.”

Einstein rings are based on physicist Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, which predicts that light will bend around objects in space, so they focus the light like giant lenses, ESA said. The phenomenon allows scientists to sometimes see the light from distant galaxies that would otherwise be hidden.

“I find it very intriguing that this ring was observed within a well-known galaxy, which was first discovered in 1884,” Valeria Pettorino, ESA Euclid project scientist, said. “The galaxy has been known to astronomers for a very long time. And yet this ring was never observed before. This demonstrates how powerful Euclid is, finding new things even in places we thought we knew well. This discovery is very encouraging for the future of the Euclid mission and demonstrates its fantastic capabilities.”

Over the course of the mission, scientists expect Euclid will reveal more about the role of gravity in the Universe, as well as the nature of dark energy and dark matter.

Euclid will map over a third of the sky and observe billions of galaxies as far as 10 billion light-years away, ESA said. In doing so, scientists expect Euclid to find around 100,000 more strong lenses, though finding one so cosmically close to home and so spectacular, ESA added, “is astonishing.”

“Euclid is going to revolutionize the field, with all this data we’ve never had before,” O’Riordan said.
