Hawaii, Washington among ‘worst states to drive’ in the US, says new report

0

A new study revealed which states in America are the best and worst places to drive in, and the top spot may (or may not) surprise you.

WalletHub released its 2025 report after conducting research across all 50 states. States were ranked in key dimensions: cost of ownership and maintenance, traffic and infrastructure rank, safety rank, plus access to vehicles and maintenance rank.

Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, said that owning a car can be expensive if you’re not in the right location.

Secret reasons for ‘Zoom fatigue’ among American workers, says study

0

People are suffering from “Zoom fatigue” for some very specific reasons, according to a recently published study.

In the post-pandemic world, the increasing reliance on virtual meetings has led to the identification of a new phenomenon among people who are apparently fed up with talking to colleagues on computer screens.

This phenomenon has “significant” implications for workplace productivity and individual well-being, scientists say, as news agency SWNS reported.

‘I’M A DOCTOR — HERE’S THE WELLNESS ROUTINE I FOLLOW FOR A LONGER, HEALTHIER LIFE

The new study has found that “facial appearance dissatisfaction” is a key trigger of meeting fatigue.

Chaeyun Lim of the University of Michigan and her colleagues investigated impression management features – tools that allow users to adjust their self-video to manage their appearance.

A new study included professional, technical and scientific workers who were on the job remotely at least part of the time – and who participated in regular virtual meetings with their colleagues. (iStock)

The research team recruited 2,448 U.S.-based workers to participate in a short survey.

The sample included professional, technical and scientific workers who were on the job remotely at least part of the time – and who participated in regular virtual meetings with their teams.

The survey assessed the participants’ negative perceptions of their facial appearance, as well as “impression management” methods such as the use of “touch-up” enhancements and the use of video filters or avatars, SWNS noted.

“The solution isn’t more professional cameras or makeup – it’s learning to accept yourself the way you are.”

Published in PLOS One, a peer-reviewed, open-access journal, the study showed that workers who report increased facial appearance dissatisfaction also experience more virtual meeting fatigue – which then leads to even more use of the impression management features.

FEELING EXTRA TIRED? THIS VIRUS COULD BE THE CULPRIT, STUDY SUGGESTS

Said Lim, a doctoral student at Michigan State University, said, “Fatigue induced by facial dissatisfaction is associated with users perceiving virtual meetings as less useful.”

This “ultimately affects their intention to adopt virtual platforms in workplace meetings.”

“Our new way of doing meetings and connecting virtually is part of the problem.” (iStock)

She said that “taken together, the findings advance [an] understanding of the psychological mechanisms underlying virtual meeting fatigue and its influence on technology adoption,” SWNS reported.

Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News’ senior medical analyst and a clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, told Fox News Digital that “multiple studies have shown that we are in a period of post-pandemic loneliness and anxiety, with a continuing sense of disconnection to others.”

“Our society fosters competition and division — and virtual meetings may contribute to that, even if the meetings are themselves pleasant or productive.”

He said that “our new way of doing meetings and connecting virtually is part of the problem.”

COMMON MENTAL DISORDER COULD SHORTEN YOUR LIFE, STUDY FINDS

Siegel added, “As someone who appears regularly on camera, I can say that proper makeup and lighting and a professional camera are very helpful in putting your best ‘face’ forward, whereas virtual meetings generally rely on poor lighting and even unflattering views” for most people.

“No wonder,” he said, that “so many people want to turn their cameras off and rely on audio only.”

He noted that “the solution isn’t more professional cameras or makeup – it’s learning to accept yourself the way you are.”

Siegel added, “Our society fosters competition and division – and virtual meetings may contribute to that, even if the meetings are themselves pleasant or productive.”

Future studies, said researcher Lim, should recruit participants from a variety of cultural contexts.

There is a “need to address worker well-being in virtual communication environments,” said researchers connected to a new study. (iStock)

They should also delve deeper, she said, into how current virtual meeting features facilitate workplace communication in ways that support workers’ mental health.

Lim added, “Our study highlights that dissatisfaction with facial appearance contributes to Zoom fatigue, leading to reduced adoption of virtual meeting technologies.”

“This dissatisfaction also drives the use of impression management features – emphasizing the need to address worker well-being in virtual communication environments.”

Prostate cancer cases spike in California, as doctors share potential reasons

0

Cases of prostate cancer are on the rise in California, according to new research.

A study by UC San Francisco (UCSF) included nearly 388,000 men who had prostate cancer between 2004 and 2021.

The incidence rate of cases increased 6.7% per year on average between 2011 and 2021, the JAMA-published research revealed.

COMMON CANCER TYPE COULD BE DETECTED WITH NEW BLOOD TEST

Although cases rose, prostate cancer mortality rates declined 2.6% per year from 2004 to 2012, and plateaued from 2012 to 2021. These trends were similar across age, race, ethnicity and region, the researchers found.

In 2018, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force began recommending that men between the ages of 55 and 69 discuss “possible benefits and harms of screening with their doctors,” according to a press release from UCSF.

The rising cases correspond with a change in guidelines for PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing, in which the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) stopped recommending the screenings in 2012, according to the UCSF press release.

The guidelines were changed in order to reduce the number of prostate cancer patients who were treated with “potentially harmful interventions” for non-threatening forms of the disease.

MEN’S CANCER DEATHS EXPECTED TO SPIKE MORE THAN 90% BY 2050, STUDY FINDS

According to UCSF, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and the second-leading cause of cancer deaths.

Most prostate cancer tumors, however, are low-grade and “never spread” — and the PSA screening “does not differentiate between aggressive or non-aggressive tumors, leading many men to be diagnosed with cancers that would not hurt them in the long run,” the release stated.

“On the other hand, if screening isn’t done, timely diagnosis of more advanced cancers can be missed – those cancers might have been successfully treated if found early,” UCSF noted.

The freeze in screenings “unfortunately may have led to one of the largest subsequent rises in incidence of distant stage disease,” according to the researchers.

“If screening isn’t done, timely diagnosis of more advanced cancers can be missed.”

UCSF wrote that these findings “reinforce the need for screening that can identify potentially fatal tumors without raising false alarms about ones that pose no threat to the patient.”

The increase in cases could be due to a variety of factors, including obesity and an increase in alcohol consumption and fatty foods, according to a doctor who spoke with Fox News Digital. (iStock)

“Figuring out the best way to screen for prostate cancer continues to be a challenge for researchers and doctors,” lead study author Dr. Erin L. Van Blarigan, UCSF associate professor of epidemiology, biostatistics and urology, said in a statement.

“Without screening, the number of men diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer – when treatments are less effective – increases fast.”

Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel, who was not involved in the study, also called out the need for regular screenings.

“[Screenings] decreased in many areas, including California, as the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended against PSA as a regular screening tool, which I always disagreed with,” he told Fox News Digital. “Especially as MRI advanced, so not all elevated PSA automatically meant a biopsy.”

Based on the increase in prostate cancer cases across all ages, Siegel emphasized the need to “diagnose it early for better outcomes.”

Side view closeup of doctor holding clipboard while with patient

“Without screening, the number of men diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer – when treatments are less effective – increases fast,” a researcher said.

Siegel suggested that the increase in cases could also be due to a variety of factors, including the obesity epidemic, ultraprocessed foods and an increase in alcohol consumption and fatty foods.

David R. Wise, MD, PhD, urologic oncologist and the service chief of the Genitourinary Medical Oncology Program at NYU Langone Perlmutter Cancer Center, also reacted to this rise in cases.

“A return to prostate cancer screening will likely reverse this effect.”

“The increasing incidence of metastatic prostate cancer in California in the 2010s is consistent with reports by others, including the American Cancer Society,” Wise, who was not involved in the research, told Fox News Digital.

“It likely reflects the aftermath of diminished prostate cancer screening. A return to prostate cancer screening will likely reverse this effect.”

“Optimized screening, enhanced by MRI and novel blood-based biomarkers, is now available and is poised to spare men with low risk disease from unnecessary treatment while ensuring early detection for men with aggressive cancer,” he added.

Beware of fake Reddit solutions delivering dangerous malware

0

Sometimes, when you need an answer to a complex life situation or a way to troubleshoot an error on your computer, regular articles on the web don’t help. Some issues are so niche that no one writes about them, and those who do often say nothing useful in 1,000 words.

In these cases, adding Reddit to your search query can be a game changer. Nine times out of 10, someone on Reddit has faced the same issue, and there’s probably a solution.

But bad actors have caught on to this, too. They’re now mimicking Reddit to spread malware that can steal your personal information.

What you need to know about fake Reddit pages

Hackers are distributing nearly 1,000 fake websites mimicking Reddit and WeTransfer to spread the Lumma Stealer malware. These sites are designed to trick you into downloading malicious software by imitating legitimate discussions and file-sharing services.

On these fake Reddit pages, attackers create a fabricated discussion where one user asks for help downloading a tool, another offers a WeTransfer link and a third expresses gratitude to make the exchange seem real. Clicking the link redirects victims to a counterfeit WeTransfer site, where the download button delivers the Lumma Stealer malware.

All these fake pages have the following things in common:

  • The websites include a brand name (like “Reddit” or “WeTransfer”) followed by random characters to appear legitimate at first glance
  • They use “.org” or “.net” domains instead of the official one, which is “.com”
  • The interface closely mimics the real sites to deceive users

These fake websites were discovered by Sekoia researcher crep1x, who compiled a full list of the pages involved in the scheme. In total, 529 of these sites mimic Reddit, while 407 impersonate WeTransfer to trick users into downloading malware.

According to BleepingComputer, hackers may be driving traffic to these fake pages through methods like malicious ads (malvertising), search engine manipulation (SEO poisoning), harmful websites, direct messages on social media and other deceptive tactics.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR PRIVATE DATA FROM THE INTERNET

The dangers of info-stealer malware

Hackers are using fake Reddit pages to spread Lumma Stealer, a powerful malware designed to steal personal data while staying under the radar. Once it infects a device, it can grab passwords stored in web browsers and session tokens, allowing attackers to hijack accounts without even needing a password.

But Reddit isn’t the only way this malware spreads. Hackers also push it through GitHub comments, deepfake websites and shady online ads. Once they steal login credentials, they often sell them on hacker forums, where others can use them for further attacks.

This type of malware has already played a role in major security breaches, including attacks on PowerSchool, Hot Topic, CircleCI and Snowflake. It’s a growing threat, especially for companies that rely on password-based security.

6 ways to protect yourself from info-stealing malware

1. Be cautious with download links: Avoid downloading files from random Reddit discussions, social media messages or unfamiliar websites. If an unknown user shares the link or seems out of place in the context, it’s better to err on the side of caution. If the link is directing you to a file-sharing site like WeTransfer or Google Drive, double-check the URL for any signs of manipulation—like random characters added to the domain name.

2. Have strong antivirus software: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware originating from these Reddit discussions, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

3. Verify website URLs: Fake websites often look convincing but have slight differences in their URLs. Check for misspellings, extra characters or unusual domains (e.g., “.org” or “.net” instead of the official “.com”).

4. Use strong, unique passwords and enable 2FA: A password manager can help generate and store strong passwords for each site. Meanwhile, enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security, making it harder for attackers to hijack your accounts. Get more details about my best expert-reviewed Password Managers of 2025 here.

5. Keep your software updated: Regularly update your operating system, apps, browsers and other software on your PC or mobile devices. Updates often include patches for security vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit.

6. Watch out for malvertising and SEO traps: Hackers manipulate search engine results and run deceptive ads to trick users into visiting fake sites. Stick to official sources and avoid clicking on ads or search results that seem too good to be true.

HOW TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST DEBIT CARD HACKERS WHO ARE AFTER YOUR MONEY

Kurt’s key takeaway

Hackers are getting sneakier, using fake Reddit and WeTransfer pages to spread dangerous malware like Lumma Stealer. These sites might look real, but they’re designed to steal your personal info. To stay safe, always double-check links and be cautious about downloading files from unfamiliar sources. Use strong, unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication and keep your software updated to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.

Smart windows take a page from nature’s pinecone playbook

0

Have you ever wondered how a pine cone knows when to open and close? It’s not magic, it’s science.

Now, researchers have taken this cue from nature to create something pretty cool for our homes.

Let’s dive into how this revolutionary window technology works, keeping your home comfortable without using a single watt of electricity.

Nature’s ingenious design

Pine cones have these amazing scales that respond to moisture. When it’s damp, they close up tight. But when it’s warm and dry, they open wide to release their seeds. This simple yet effective mechanism has inspired scientists to develop a smart window system that could change the way we think about energy efficiency in buildings.

The Solar Gate window system

Scientists from Germany’s universities of Stuttgart and Freiburg have developed what is known as the Solar Gate window facade system. It’s like having tiny pinecones built right into your windows. These smart windows have special elements that curl up when it’s cool and moist, letting in sunlight to warm your home. But when it’s hot and dry, they flatten out to block the sun and keep things cool inside.

smart windows 3

NEVER NEED AN EV CHARGING STATION AGAIN WITH THESE ROOFTOP SOLAR POWER PANELS

How it works

The Solar Gate system consists of a gridded array of pine-cone-scale-inspired self-bending elements housed between two panes of glass in an aluminum-frame window unit. Each element is ingeniously crafted with three distinct layers, each serving a unique purpose. The bottom layer is composed of a cellulose powder and a thermoplastic blend that swells when exposed to moisture. Above this lies a middle layer made of thermoplastic, which remains unaffected by moisture.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

The top layer consists of flexible biocomposite filaments that serve to hold the entire structure together. When exposed to moist air, the bottom layer expands, causing the element to curl upwards. Conversely, in dry conditions, it returns to its flattened state. This simple yet effective mechanism allows the window to respond automatically to changing weather conditions, providing optimal shading and light penetration as needed.

smart windows 4

SOLAR-POWERED BLIMP COULD BRING HIGH SPEED INTERNET TO YOUR AREA

Real-world testing

The Solar Gate system underwent rigorous real-world testing to prove its effectiveness. In a comprehensive year-long study, researchers installed 424 Solar Gate elements in the south-facing skylight of a research building at the University of Freiburg. The results of this extensive trial were nothing short of impressive.

During the cool, wet winter months, the elements responded by curling upwards, allowing ample sunlight to penetrate the building. This natural response effectively warmed and illuminated the interior spaces, reducing the need for artificial heating and lighting. Conversely, as the seasons changed and brought warmer, drier summer conditions, the elements automatically flattened out.

This flattening action served to block excess sunlight, effectively keeping the building’s interior cool and comfortable without the need for energy-intensive air conditioning. The test demonstrated the system’s ability to autonomously adapt to changing weather conditions, providing optimal comfort and energy efficiency throughout the year.

The future of energy-efficient buildings

This innovative approach to building technology has far-reaching implications beyond just window systems. Researchers have already begun exploring similar biomimetic principles in a variety of applications. For instance, studies have investigated the development of shading systems using wooden slats that can open and close in response to environmental conditions.

In the realm of textiles, scientists are working on “smart” clothing fabrics that can adapt to ambient temperature, providing optimal comfort for wearers. Perhaps most intriguingly, these principles are even being applied to the field of robotics, with researchers developing tiny mobile robots that can respond to environmental stimuli in ways inspired by natural mechanisms. As we continue to draw inspiration from nature’s ingenious designs, the potential for creating more sustainable and responsive technologies seems boundless.

‘Lost site’ depicted in iconic Bayeux Tapestry found thanks to revelation of ancient loo

0

The residence of a legendary king was recently discovered in the United Kingdom – all thanks to an 11th century toilet.

Newcastle University announced the discovery of Harold Godwinson’s – aka King Harold II – residence in Bosham, a village on the coast of West Sussex, England, according to a news release published Jan. 28. Harold, one of the subjects of the Bayeux Tapestry, was famously killed in the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

His Bosham residence was depicted twice in the tapestry, but the remnants of the residence were unknown until now. Harold was the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, and he was succeeded by the Norman king William the Conqueror.

Describing the formerly lost site as a “power center,” the university says Bosham was where Harold dined before sailing to France.

“The Tapestry culminates in Williams’s victory at Hastings, but earlier in the artwork Bosham is shown as the place where Harold enjoys a feast in an extravagant hall before setting sail for France, and again on his return,” Newcastle University noted.

“The location of Harold’s residence at Bosham has never been proved, although it has been suggested that a house in the village — now a private home — stands on the site.”

By conducting a geophysical survey and analyzing maps and records, historians were able to gather new information about the site, which had been previously excavated in 2006.

In particular, the existence of a latrine within a large timber building suggests that the whole building once belonged to a high-status figure.

“In the past decade or so archaeologists have begun to recognize a trend in England, beginning during the 10th century AD, for high-status houses to integrate toilets,” the university release explained.

“The discovery of the latrine therefore indicated to the team that the timber building was of elite status, and almost certainly represents part of Harold’s residence illustrated on the Bayeux Tapestry,” the statement added. “The hall was one part of a more extensive complex, that also included a church, which still survives.”

Newcastle professor Dr. Duncan Wright said that he was certain that the site was, in fact, Harold’s Bosham residence, according to the release.

“The realization that the 2006 excavations had found, in effect, an Anglo-Saxon en-suite confirmed to us that this house sits on the site of an elite residence pre-dating the Norman Conquest,” Wright explained. “Looking at this vital clue, alongside all our other evidence, it is beyond all reasonable doubt that we have here the location of Harold Godwinson’s private power center, the one famously depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry.”

University of Exeter professor Oliver Creighton, who was involved in the project, echoed Wright’s sentiment.

“The Norman Conquest saw a new ruling class supplant an English aristocracy that has left little in the way of physical remains, which makes the discovery at Bosham hugely significant — we have found an Anglo-Saxon show-home,” he said.

It is not unusual for 11th-century objects to be discovered in England today.

Archaeologists recently unearthed 1,000-year-old treasure consisting of more than 300 coins. The coins were issued between 1036 and 1044, which predates the Battle of Hastings by two decades.

Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump and mom of two, will host a new program on Fox News Channel called “My View with Lara Trump” on Saturday evenings, it was announced on Wednesday.

Trump, 42, is married to Eric Trump and is a former Republican National Committee co-chair. She’s also been outspoken about the need for improved health in America.

In an on-camera interview a few days ago with Fox News Digital, she said she’s “like a lot of parents out there today” in terms of being concerned about the health and well-being of her young children. (See the video at the top of this article.)

MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE MOVEMENT

“Whenever you go to the grocery store or whenever you prepare food for your children, you really wonder, what is it that you’re feeding them? And you hear so much about the fact that we in the United States don’t have the same standards as other countries.”

She added, “You wonder, why is that? And am I doing the best I possibly can for my children?”

Trump said she believes this is a “big aspect” of why so many people in this country are supporting Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as HHS secretary in the Trump administration.

“I think that people want transparency. We want the truth. We want honesty,” she said.

“You always want the future generation to live longer and have a better life than you.”

“And we want to know that the food we’re giving our kids is actually going to make them healthier and not make them sicker.”

Trump said she feels that as “an American, it’s very concerning whenever you think about the fact that we are the richest country in the world. We have the most resources at our fingertips.”

MOM AND MAHA SUPPORTER WANTS HEALTHIER WORLD FOR KIDS

And “yet, for some reason,” she went on, “our population continues to get sicker and people are starting to die earlier. That is very concerning as well.”

She went on, “You always want the future generation to live longer and have a better life than you. And it’s kind of concerning to a lot of moms, myself included, that right now it almost doesn’t feel like we can say that.”

Trump stressed that America’s parents want their children to learn to make “healthy choices” for themselves.

“I think that people want transparency. We want the truth. We want honesty.”

“We all do the best we can,” she said — “especially when dad comes and takes the kids for ice cream, you know, in the middle of the afternoon, right before dinner,” she added playfully.

The sedentary lifestyle, she said, “does lend itself to being sick down the road.”

Trump added that she wants her children to “appreciate [the idea of] moving their bodies.”

“They are both in a certain number of sports,” she noted.

“They both enjoy being outside. And that’s something that I’m lucky I can prioritize living in Florida — that my kids are moving constantly.”

Setting a healthy example

Lara Trump shared that exercise is an important part of her daily routine. “I’m trying to make sure that as a mom, I am leading by example,” she said.

“I try to expose my kids to that as much as I can and hope that they pick up on it, and that one day they’ll choose it for themselves when they have the ability to decide what it is they want to do.”

MAHA MOMS CALL FOR ‘RIGOROUS TRANSPARENCY’ INTO HEALTH CONCERNS

Of her children, who are now 7 and 5, Trump said, “They’re enjoying all their sports right now. Jujitsu, basketball, football, gymnastics. They’re having a great time.”

For parents, she said, the goal should be to “establish the habits now — and you hope that they continue for a lifetime.”

Born and raised in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, Trump shared a memory of how her own parents, “who are both still very healthy and active,” set a strong example.

“When I was younger, before dinner, my dad would actually say, ‘All right, we’ve got a choice. You can either do pull-ups, you can do push-ups, or you can climb the rope’ — which went three stories up to the top of our house and back down, probably to the horror of my neighbors,” she added with a laugh.

“That’s how I grew up,” she told Fox News Digital. “It has obviously meant that I’ve continued to lead an active lifestyle throughout my entire life — and it makes me feel good. It keeps me healthy and hopefully keeps me looking good as well, as long as possible.”

Regarding RFK Jr.’s push for healthier foods in America, Lara Trump mentioned some of the unhealthy additives in today’s foods.

“There are things like high-fructose corn syrup, plus the seed oils that are often talked about … in terms of their unhealthiness for us.”

“I really hope that we have some level of transparency in this administration, and I think we will.”

Said Trump about her growing-up experiences in North Carolina, “It’s a small town. And because of that, I really think that I got to be a kid for much longer than maybe other people. And I think of it a lot now for my own children.”

“I’ve continued to lead an active lifestyle throughout my entire life — and it makes me feel good.”

She said, “Whether it’s the iPads, the devices, whatever it is — our kids are really exposed to so much now, more so than I think we’ve ever seen in the history of this country. And they grow up so fast.”

Trump said she aims to give her children “the experience of their childhood, the innocence, the ability not to really have to worry about anything.”

“You only get that when you’re a kid, and you only get it one time,” she said.

“And I feel grateful that I grew up with that experience myself.”

‘Sesame Street in Iraq’: USAID’s ‘wasteful and dangerous’ spending exposed by senator

0

Republican Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst published a list of projects and programs she says the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has helped fund across the years, highlighting it as “wasteful and dangerous” spending that has gripped taxpayers until the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) stepped in.

“From funneling tax dollars to risky research in Wuhan to sending Ukrainians to Paris Fashion Week, USAID is one of the worst offenders of waste in Washington… all around the world,” Ernst posted to X on Monday before rattling off a handful of examples.

Ernst highlighted that the agency “authorized a whopping $20 million to create a Sesame Street in Iraq.”

Under the Biden administration, USAID awarded $20 million to a nonprofit called Sesame Workshop to produce a show called “Ahlan Simsim Iraq” in an effort to “promote inclusion, mutual respect, and understanding across ethnic, religious, and sectarian groups.”

“As Iraq recovers from years of conflict, communities struggle to find a new sense of normalcy while physical and emotional wounds remain,” an archived link to USAID’s website reads. “The legacy of Iraq’s conflict with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) left many children without a stable home or displaced, especially those from Iraq’s ethnic and religious minorities. Additionally, Iraqi youth, who make up over half of the population, are unable to find jobs in an economy strained by war and corruption, creating vulnerabilities to radicalization.”

USAID’s website shut down this week as DOGE and tech billionaire Elon Musk put the agency under its microscope.

In another example Ernst highlighted, USAID was found to have provided millions of dollars to farmers in Afghanistan in an effort to get them to grow food instead of poppy fields and opium.

The plan, however, backfired and led to an increase in poppy production, and thus opium production, during the war in Afghanistan.

“During the height of the war in Afghanistan, USAID spent millions of dollars to help Afghans grow crops instead of opium,” Ernst posted to X Monday. “The results: opium poppy cultivation across the country nearly doubled, according to the UN.”

USAID, as well as the U.S. military, paid farmers to build or rehab miles of irrigation canals in the Helmand province, Afghanistan, during the Obama administration in an effort to persuade the farmers to grow fruits and other plants, the Washington Post reported in 2019. The farmers, however, used the canals to grow poppies.

Poppy production almost doubled in the region between 2010 and 2014, the Post reported, citing U.N. figures.

In another example, Ernst said USAID spent $2 million to fund “Moroccan pottery classes and promotion.” Morocco has for thousands of years created pottery, dating back to 6,000 B.C.

Former Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn, who died in 2020, published a government “waste book” in 2012 detailing that USAID “began pursuing a four year plan to improve the economic competitiveness of Morocco” beginning in 2009, which included $27 million in funding.

A portion of the funding was directed to a program that “involved training Moroccans to create and design pottery to sell in domestic and international markets,” according to the report.

The American pottery instructor hired to teach local artists, however, was unable to communicate with them as a translator for the program was “not fluent in English,” according to the waste book.

GOP HARDLINERS RALLY AROUND TRUMP, MUSK SCALING BACK USAID

“An American pottery instructor was contracted to provide several weeks of training classes to local artists to improve their methods and teach them how to successfully make pottery that could be brought to market,” the waste book reported. “Unfortunately, the translator hired for the sessions was not fluent in English and was unable to transmit large portions of the lectures to the participants.”

The façade of the Wuhan Institute of Virology

USAID “funneled nearly $1 million into batty research on coronaviruses at China’s infamous Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Sen. Joni Ernst claims, which “the CIA admits was the likely source of COVID-19.” (Hector Retamal/AFP via Getty Images)

Ernst added in another example that USAID “funneled nearly $1 million into batty research on coronaviruses at China’s infamous Wuhan Institute of Virology, which the CIA admits was the likely source of COVID-19.”

The Government Accountability Office published a report in 2023 finding that both USAID and the National Institutes of Health directed taxpayer funds to American universities and a nonprofit organization before the money found its way to Chinese groups, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

The report found that between 2014 and 2021, U.S. taxpayer funds were redirected to entities, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Wuhan University and the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, which is part of the Chinese Communist Party. The three groups each received more than $2 million combined from the U.S. government “through seven subawards,” according to the report.

USAID EMPLOYEE SAYS STAFFERS HID PRIDE FLAGS, ‘INCRIMINATING’ BOOKS WHEN DOGE ARRIVED

“The selected entities are government institutions or laboratories in China that conduct work on infectious diseases, including pandemic viruses, and have had actions taken by federal agencies to address safety or security concerns,” the report states. “All three selected Chinese entities received funds.”

In January, the CIA under the second Trump administration released an updated assessment on the origins of COVID-19, favoring the theory that the contagious disease was due to a lab leak. The CIA previously had maintained that it did not have sufficient evidence to conclude whether COVID originated in a lab or a “wet market” in Wuhan, China.

Ernst claimed in the X thread that USAID also provided funds to boost tourism to Lebanon and to send Ukrainian models to fashion week.

“The agency spent $2 million promoting tourism to Lebanon, a nation the State Department warns against traveling to ‘due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, unexploded landmines, and the risk of armed conflict,'” she wrote.

“USAID spends money like it’s going out of fashion, literally,” she wrote. “Trade assistance to Ukraine paid for models and designers to take trips to New York City, London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, and South by Southwest in Austin.”

FLASHBACK: BIDEN ADMIN REPEATEDLY USED USAID TO PUSH ABORTION IN AFRICA

The Trump administration and DOGE, which is led by Musk, put USAID in its line of fire over the weekend, as DOGE continues tearing through government agencies to strip them of reported overspending and corruption.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that he is now the acting director of USAID, and told the media on Monday that the agency needs to be brought in line with Trump’s “America First” policies, which include heightened scrutiny over the distribution of taxpayer funds overseas.

Elon Musk

Musk has meanwhile slammed the agency as a “viper’s nest of radical-left marxists who hate America,” and reported in an audio-only message on X overnight on Sunday that “we’re in the process” of “shutting down USAID” and that Trump reportedly agreed to shutter the agency.

Democrats have slammed the Trump administration’s efforts on USAID. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., accused Trump of starting a dictatorship while she protested outside USAID headquarters on Monday.

“It is a really, really sad day in America. We are witnessing a constitutional crisis,” Omar said. “We talked about Trump wanting to be a dictator on day one. And here we are. This is what the beginning of dictatorship looks like when you gut the Constitution, and you install yourself as the sole power. That is how dictators are made.”
