Hydrogen-powered rescue truck just smashed a world record, and it only spits out water

0

Hydrogen-powered trucks are making waves in the world of clean transportation, and the H2Rescue truck just set a new Guinness World Record to prove it.

This impressive vehicle, developed by Cummins Accelera in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and Department of Defense, traveled an astounding 1,806 miles on a single tank of hydrogen.

hydrogen-powered truck 1

H2Rescue truck (Department of Homeland Security)

The record-breaking journey

The H2Rescue truck embarked on its record-setting trip in California, carrying 386 pounds of hydrogen fuel. Throughout the journey, it navigated rush hour traffic, maintained speeds between 50 and 55 mph and operated in temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

I’M GIVING AWAY THE LATEST & GREATEST AIRPODS PRO 2

The truck’s performance was closely monitored by a Guinness World Records adjudicator, who ensured the integrity of the test by sealing the hydrogen tank before departure.

YOU WON’T BELIEVE HOW FAR VOLVO’S NEW ELECTRIC SEMI-TRUCK GOES ON A SINGLE CHARGE

Impressive technology

The H2Rescue truck is powered by a Cummins Accelera fuel cell engine and a 250-kilowatt traction motor. During its record-breaking run, it consumed 370 pounds of hydrogen, demonstrating the efficiency of hydrogen fuel cell technology. The most striking aspect of this journey? The truck emitted absolutely nothing but water vapor from its tailpipe.

Environmental impact

By using hydrogen instead of gasoline, the H2Rescue truck saved a whopping 664 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions compared to a conventional truck of the same size covering the same distance. This showcases the potential of hydrogen-powered vehicles in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.

TECH TURNING BIG RIGS, TRUCKS, EVEN TAKS INTO SELF-DRIVING VEHICLES

More than just a record breaker

The H2Rescue truck isn’t just about setting records. It’s designed for real-world emergency response scenarios. The vehicle can provide 25 kilowatts of power from its fuel cells for up to 72 hours without refueling, which is sufficient to power multiple FEMA trailers during critical emergency operations.

Weighing 33,000 pounds, the truck is robustly built to carry essential supplies directly into disaster zones where infrastructure might be compromised. As an added innovative feature, the truck produces about a gallon of water per hour as a byproduct, which, while not a massive water source, represents a small but intriguing potential benefit in emergency situations where resources can be scarce.

The bigger picture

The DOE estimates that replacing traditional emergency response vehicles with H2Rescue trucks could save about 1,825 gallons of gasoline per year and reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2.8 tons. This demonstrates the significant potential of hydrogen fuel cell technology in heavy-duty transportation and emergency response applications.

7 blood pressure mistakes that could be throwing off your readings

Several key mistakes could throw off the accuracy of blood pressure readings for people who take them at home.

The average “normal” blood pressure is 120/80, according to the American Heart Association.

Almost half of all U.S. adults have elevated blood pressure (systolic pressure between 120 and 19 and diastolic pressure less than 80). High blood pressure (hypertension, which is when the systolic pressure is between 130 and 139 or diastolic pressure is between 80 and 89) can raise the risk of heart attack and stroke if left untreated, per the AHA.

JUST 5 MINUTES OF EXERCISE COULD REDUCE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, STUDY FINDS

“It is very common to see patients with bad data,” said Dr. Bradley Serwer, a Maryland-based cardiologist and chief medical officer at VitalSolution, an Ingenovis Health company that offers cardiovascular and anesthesiology services to hospitals.

The average “normal” blood pressure is 120/80, according to the American Heart Association. (iStock)

“It is essential to follow the proper standardized instructions.”

The cardiologist shared with Fox News Digital the following common mistakes he often sees patients make when monitoring their blood pressure.

1. Using the wrong arm position

Certain arm positions can lead to inflated results and misdiagnoses of hypertension. This was supported by recent research from Johns Hopkins Medicine.

BLOOD PRESSURE IS ‘HIGHER THAN NORMAL’ FOR 1 IN 7 KIDS, SAYS AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION

People who rested their arms on their laps drove up the top number in the blood pressure reading (systolic pressure) by nearly 4 mmHg, while leaving their arm hanging at their side increased it by nearly 7 mmHg.

For the most accurate results, the guidelines are to rest the arm on a desk or another firm surface at the same level as the heart, Serwer told Fox News Digital.

2. Sitting in the wrong position

“The proper position is to sit upright with your feet on the floor and your legs uncrossed, resting your arm on a flat surface that is level with your heart,” Serwer advised.

3. Using the wrong type or size of cuff

If the cuff is too large or small, measurements will be abnormal, the cardiologist cautioned.

“Most blood pressure monitors use either an arm cuff or a wrist cuff,” he said. “Arm cuffs tend to be more accurate and require fewer steps to ensure accuracy.”

4. Not calibrating the cuff

Serwer said he typically asks all patients to bring their home cuff to the office, where he first measures their blood pressure manually and then uses the patient’s cuff.

“We can then assess the accuracy of their cuff,” he said.

5. Not allowing enough time to equilibrate

The most accurate results are obtained after sitting in a low-stress environment for five minutes, Serwer noted.

“Know your blood pressure, even if you are healthy.”

6. Drinking caffeine beforehand

“Avoid stimulants before measuring your pressure, as caffeine will raise it,” Serwer said.

7. Checking at different times of day

When taking blood pressure, Serwer recommends checking it twice and waiting at least one minute between measurements.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

“Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day, so checking your pressure at the same time each day gives us a better trend,” he added.

Serwer also advises his patients to track their blood pressure readings in a log.

Blood pressure reading

“If the average blood pressure reading is greater than 130/80, they have stage I hypertension and should be evaluated by their primary care provider,” a cardiologist said.  (iStock)

“If the average blood pressure reading is greater than 130/80, they have stage I hypertension and should be evaluated by their primary care provider,” he said.

“If their blood pressure is greater than 180/100 or if they have symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath or severe headache, they should seek immediate attention.”

Even if there are no other symptoms other than high blood pressure, Serwer emphasizes that people shouldn’t wait until they have complications before treating hypertension.

“Heart attacks, strokes, renal failure and peripheral vascular disease can often be avoided with early interventions,” he said.

Healthy living

In most cases, making lifestyle changes such as improving your diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight can help keep blood pressure within a safe range, according to the AHA. (iStock)

When devastation strikes, it often uproots more than just physical homes and structures — it tears apart the very fabric of a community.

For Sara Trepanier, a Navy veteran, single mother of four and emergency room doctor, the California wildfires reduced her home this week and beloved community to ashes.

On Tuesday, Trepanier and her family evacuated their home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, on Swarthmore Avenue.

CALIFORNIA FIRES AND MENTAL HEALTH TOLL: CELEBRITIES AND THERAPISTS OFFER TIPS

The mom and her 14-year-old daughter, Remy Trepanier, were in tears as they spoke with Fox News Digital about the loss of their home and how they managed to exit amid the chaos and destruction. (See the video at the top of this article.)

“I decided to walk my dog one block over as I went around the corner to the main street on the bluff,” said Sara Trepanier. “You could see a little plume of smoke not on our hill, but on the hill to the left.”

“As we watched it, it just rapidly went over the hill. Within 10 minutes, you could see these huge flames,” she said.

“This is miles away. It’s not on our direct hill. So as an ER doctor, I’m usually very calm, but I was like, ‘It’s moving so fast. It is.’ You could tell it was climbing over the hill,” she said.

“The winds were so strong — that’s what pushed this to [occur at] a ridiculous pace,” she said.

“So we ended up trying to evacuate. Finally, when our neighbors were evacuating, we rushed out of the house,” said the mom.

Originally from North Carolina, Trepanier said she was used to dealing with hurricanes and consulted her neighbors upon leaving with a mutual acknowledgment that areas were evacuating in stages.

The one thing that we’ve heard is there have not been fatalities in the Palisades, which shows the community that they know how to do this,” she said. “They know that respectfully, let the people who are in the direct line go.”

She added, “Our neighbor was the one who has lived there his whole life. He was directing us to hang and see until it was time — and you could see it was coming toward the town,” she added.

Daughter Remy said each family member took only one suitcase with some clothes, along with their dog and some dog food.

“We just went up the street, and it was like a dead zone. There was nobody around, and it was ashy, so we ended up finding our way out through Santa Monica and to Venice, to a hotel,” said the mom.

“We just see videos of my high school burning down.”

When they heard the fire had jumped over to their community, the daughter said her heart dropped.

Through tear-filled eyes, the daughter shared her admiration for her mom, reflecting on her resilience and describing how her mother remained calm and decisive.

Elephant expert warns tourists after Blanca Ojanguren García’s death in Thailand

0

An expert on Asian elephants is sounding the alarm about “elephant sanctuaries” after a tourist was killed while visiting one in Thailand.

Blanca Ojanguren García, 22, a law student at the University of Navarra, died last week. She was bathing an elephant at Koh Yao Elephant Care when the 50-year-old animal killed her with its trunk, according to Spanish media.

Around 18 people were at the sanctuary at the time, including the victim’s boyfriend, the company told Spanish newspaper El Mundo. No other visitors were injured, and details about the incident, such as how the animals were treated, are still unknown.

But the incident raises questions about how safe elephant sanctuaries, which lure tourists with promises of getting up close with the animals, really are.

‘INCREDIBLY SOCIAL’: RESEARCHERS MAKE STUNNING FIND ON HOW AFRICAN ELEPHANTS INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER

Concerns about elephant tourism are being raised after a Spanish student was killed by one last week. (iStock/Getty Images)

Duncan McNair, the CEO of London-based charity Save the Asian Elephants, spoke with Fox News Digital about the tragedy and warned that tourists should think twice before visiting one.

“‘Sanctuary,’ a bit like ‘havens’ and ‘orphanages,’ is a very nasty term that is usually devoid of meaning or certainly devoid of accuracy,” McNair said. “The vast majority of sanctuaries in Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam, and Cambodia … are not ethical. They are brutal, and they do it all for money.”

It is still unknown why the elephant struck García, or how the sanctuary’s handlers treated the creature before the killing. But McNair said while it’s possible the elephant was unaware of its strength, it was more likely lashing out against the conditions it was kept in.

“[The trunk] is an extraordinarily diverse and durable organ that is multipurpose,” McNair explained. “An elephant doesn’t randomly lash around or swing around with its trunk. … It’s wholly unlikely that this was an accident.

McNair advises against tourists having up-close interactions with elephants, citing concerns for both parties. (iStock/Getty Images)

“So why did it happen? Well, of course, because the elephant, which was like pretty much all elephants in captivity for commercial exploitation, was being kept in a completely unnatural state, in extreme stress.”

He emphasized that, though elephants are gentle and intelligent animals, their “calmness” does not mean they are tamed. And they can snap at any threat or stressor they perceive, even a well-meaning tourist.

“Elephants are wild animals. … They are kept in captivity, having been brutalized into submission,” McNair explained. “But that doesn’t mean they’re tamed. It simply means that they’re terrified for spans of time.

“If they see their chance, or if they’re overstressed, they will attack and kill.”

The animal rights advocate noted that while elephants are “wondrous and complex” herbivores, they will still respond aggressively when they are threatened.

“They react, sometimes extremely, when something flashes across their corner of vision,” McNair explained. “And, so, to put an elephant that’s been abused in captivity probably for decades, in exact proximity with a young woman who’s probably got very little experience of elephants and no proper training, is an absolute recipe for disaster.”

McNair, who also works as a corporate lawyer, also noted that the mistreatment of elephants begins before the animals step foot into sanctuaries. Elephants are often snatched by poachers who commit atrocities ranging from killing mothers in front of their children to repeatedly stabbing baby elephants into submission.

“With elephants who have been brutalized and abused for use in tourism, they are extremely dangerous. … Not only are these activities so catastrophic for the elephants, they’re deadly dangerous for humans,” he said.

Through Save the Asian Elephants, McNair has advocated for legislation to stop abusive practices against the animals, such as the Animals (Low-Welfare Activities Abroad) Act that passed in the British Parliament in 2023. This work also recently led to his being named a Legal Hero of the Year 2024 by the Law Society of England and Wales.

Now, he and other animal advocates are scrutinizing tourism companies that encourage unethical treatment of elephants. Some sanctuaries do treat elephants ethically, McNair said, and he advised that tourists do research before booking their trips for both their own safety and the safety of the elephants.

“[We want] to try to steer the market of animal tourism from brutal to ethical,” McNair explained. “That’s the real intention, not to close down travel companies, nothing like that. It’s to help the animals and to help people who want to make money out of animal tourism. … That’s fine, but be ethical about it.”

CBS Sports reported that the knot on his hand formed after he appeared to hit his hand on the helmet of a Longhorns player.

Social media erupted over the bizarre-looking injury as the lump seemed to grow larger.

ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe said during the broadcast that Howard did not receive any treatment for the lump during that game. After Ohio State’s victory, ESPN’s Jake Trotter reported that Howard told him his hand is “just fine.”

Deep sleep can keep two big health problems at bay, new studies suggest

0

It might be worth working a little bit harder to get that much-desired, but often elusive, good night’s sleep.

Deep sleep clears the mind of waste just as a “dishwasher” cleans dirty plates and glasses, just-published research suggests — and there’s more.

The findings also offer insights into how sleeping pills may disrupt the “brainwashing” system — potentially affecting cognitive function for people over the long run.

ANOTHER REASON TO GET MORE SLEEP AND THIS ONE MIGHT SURPRISE YOU

Study senior author professor Maiken Nedergaard of the University of Rochester and the University of Copenhagen said norepinephrine (a neurotransmitter and hormone) triggers blood vessels to contract — generating slow pulsations that create a rhythmic flow in the surrounding fluid to carry away waste, news agency SWNS noted.

Said Nedergaard, “It’s like turning on the dishwasher before you go to bed and waking up with a clean brain. . . . We’re essentially asking what drives this process and trying to define restorative sleep based on” this “glymphatic clearance.”

“It’s like turning on the dishwasher before you go to bed and waking up with a clean brain.” (iStock)

The brain has a built-in waste removal process – the glymphatic system – that circulates fluid in the brain and spinal cord to clear out waste, according to the scientists.

The process helps remove toxic proteins that form sticky plaques linked to neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

But the scientists indicated that what drives the system was unclear until now, according to the study.

Is all sleep created equal? The researchers wanted to find out.

To find clues, Nedergaard and her team looked into what happens in mice when their brains sleep, as SWNS reported of the study. The team focused on the relationship between norepinephrine and blood flow during deep sleep.

TRUMP’S DAYLIGHT SAVING PLAN AND SLEEP: WHAT YOU MUST KNOW

They found that norepinephrine waves correlate to variations in brain blood volume — suggesting that norepinephrine triggers a rhythmic pulsation in the blood vessels. The researchers then compared the changes in blood volume to brain fluid flow.

The brain fluid flow fluctuates in correspondence to blood volume changes, suggesting the vessels act as pumps to propel the surrounding brain fluid to flush out waste.

During deep sleep, toxic proteins that form sticky plaques linked to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease are removed, scientists say in a new study.  (iStock)

Natalie Hauglund of the University of Copenhagen and the University of Oxford, the study’s lead author, said, “You can view norepinephrine as [the] conductor of an orchestra.”

She added, “There’s a harmony in the constriction and dilation of the arteries, which then drives the cerebrospinal fluid through the brain to remove the waste products.”

‘I CAN’T SLEEP BECAUSE OF RACING THOUGHTS AT NIGHT — HOW CAN I STOP THEM?’: ASK A DOCTOR

Hauglund said she wanted to understand whether all sleep is created equal.

To find out, the research team administered zolpidem, a common drug to aid sleep, to mice.

“If people aren’t getting the full benefits of sleep, they should be aware of that, so they can make informed decisions.”

They found that the norepinephrine waves during deep sleep were 50% lower in zolpidem-treated mice than in naturally sleeping mice.

Although the zolpidem-treated mice fell asleep more quickly — fluid transport into the brain dropped more than 30%, as SWNS reported.

Two new studies indicate the importance of getting a good night’s sleep — with one study saying a lack of sleep may be sabotaging the brain’s ability to keep intrusive thoughts at bay. (iStock)

The researchers say their findings, published in the journal Cell, suggest that the sleeping aid may disrupt the norepinephrine-driven waste clearance during sleep.

Hauglund said, “More and more people are using sleep medication, and it’s really important to know if that’s healthy sleep. If people aren’t getting the full benefits of sleep, they should be aware of that, so they can make informed decisions.”

The research team said the findings likely apply to humans, who also have a glymphatic system, although it requires further testing.

Nedergaard added, “Now we know norepinephrine is driving the cleaning of the brain, we may figure out how to get people a long and restorative sleep.”

Meanwhile, a lack of sleep may be doing more damage than just making people groggy.

It could be sabotaging the brain’s ability to keep intrusive thoughts at bay.

Anyone who suffers from sleep deprivation may find that the brain’s defense against unwanted memories is weakened, say experts. (iStock)

Another new study, this one published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that sleep deprivation weakens the brain’s defense against unwanted memories, allowing them to flood the mind, according to the New York Post.

“We show that sleep deprivation disrupts prefrontal inhibition of memory retrieval, and that the overnight restoration of this inhibitory mechanism is associated with time spent in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep,” the scientists said.
