Privacy is a growing concern, especially regarding location tracking. Google has taken steps to enhance your control over location sharing on your Android, making it simpler for you to manage who can see your whereabouts. Let’s dive into this new feature that Google is rolling out and how you can utilize it effectively. (iPhone users, follow these tips)

Location Sharing on Android in settings (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

The new Location Sharing toggle

Google has introduced a new “Google Location Sharing” toggle that is now integrated directly into the Android settings. This update eliminates the need to navigate through Google Maps to manage your Location Sharing preferences. The new feature is part of the latest updates to Google Play Services and is designed to simplify and enhance your control over location sharing.

What Location Sharing means

Before you toggle this off, let’s take a moment to understand why you might want it on and what happens when you turn it off.

Imagine this: You’re meeting a friend in a busy city, and instead of sending a dozen texts back and forth, they can simply see your real-time location on Google Maps. That’s the power of location sharing. It allows you to share your exact position with specific contacts, along with useful details like your device’s battery level or your estimated arrival time if you’re navigating.

But when location sharing is off, your movements stay private. No one can track where you are, and your personal information is better protected from potential misuse. Apps and services lose access to your location data, which not only boosts your privacy but can also save battery life by cutting down on background tracking.

So, before deciding, think about what fits your needs best: staying connected or staying private.

The feature is primarily available on Android smartphones, including popular models from brands such as the Google Pixel series (e.g., Pixel 6, Pixel 7), Samsung Galaxy series (e.g., Galaxy S21, Galaxy S23) and other manufacturers that run stock or near-stock Android versions. Certain Android tablets that support the latest versions of the operating system may also have access to this feature. The Location Sharing toggle is part of recent updates to the Android OS, specifically through Google Play Services. You should ensure your devices are running at least Android 12 or later to access this functionality effectively.

For the nearly 20,000 women in the U.S. who receive an ovarian cancer diagnosis each year, artificial intelligence is emerging as a potentially life-saving tool.

In a new study led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, AI models did a better job of detecting ovarian cancer than human doctors.

The research, which was published in Nature Medicine, tested an AI model’s ability to distinguish between benign and malignant lesions on the ovaries, according to a press release.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?

The AI model was trained on more than 17,000 ultrasound images from 3,652 patients across 20 hospitals in eight countries, the release stated.

“High-quality diagnostics can become more accessible, particularly in regions with limited access to experienced examiners,” said a study author. (iStock)

The AI model achieved an accuracy rate of 86% for detecting ovarian cancer, compared to 82% for human experts and 77% for those with less expertise.

“I was surprised that the AI models outperformed all 33 of the expert examiners,” study author Elisabeth Epstein, a professor at the Department of Clinical Science and Education at Karolinska Institutet, told Fox News Digital.

PARENTS TRUST AI FOR MEDICAL ADVICE MORE THAN DOCTORS, RESEARCHERS FIND

Ovarian tumors are common and “often detected by chance,” according to Epstein.

“Our study demonstrates that AI-driven diagnostic support can significantly improve ovarian cancer diagnosis by enhancing triage efficiency, reducing diagnostic errors and addressing the shortage of expert examiners,” she said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

AI medical concept

The AI model achieved an accuracy rate of 86% for detecting ovarian cancer, compared to 82% for human experts and 77% for those with less expertise. (iStock)

“High-quality diagnostics can become more accessible, particularly in regions with limited access to experienced examiners,” Epstein went on.

“This will help reduce waiting times, avoid unnecessary interventions and facilitate earlier cancer detection, ultimately improving patient outcomes and ensuring more accurate diagnoses.”

AI could also reduce the need for referrals as well as the chances of misdiagnosis, the researchers noted.

“I was surprised that the AI models outperformed all 33 of the expert examiners.”

Dr. Brian Slomovitz, director of gynecologic oncology and co-chair of the Cancer Research Committee at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Florida, noted that screening and early detection of ovarian cancer is the “holy grail” to reduce deaths from this disease.

OVARIAN CANCER TREATMENT ON FAST TRACK FOR FDA APPROVAL AS CHEMO ALTERNATIVES EMERGE: ‘WE’RE MAKING PROGRESS’

“This large retrospective trial clearly demonstrates that there may be a role in incorporating AI-driven support to better interpret ultrasound findings in patients with a pelvic mass,” Slomovitz, who was not involved in this particular study, told Fox News Digital.

“This, by itself, increases the accuracy of the radiologic findings by both decreasing the false positive rate (leading to unnecessary surgeries) and decreasing the false negative rate (missing cases of cancer).”

Ovarian cancer scans

There are other ways to evaluate ovarian cancer patients beyond radiology scans, the doctor noted.

“Menopausal status, presence or absence of symptoms, and blood test results are some other factors used to determine which patients may or may not need surgery,” Slomovitz said. “It would be great if these factors could be incorporated into the AI modeling.”

OVARIAN CANCER SIGNS, SYMPTOMS, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS

In addition to showing improved accuracy of ultrasound analysis, the AI technology will need to demonstrate a survival benefit in order to gain widespread use, he added.

“I am optimistic that artificial intelligence will be a part of the armamentarium used to improve the care we offer to our patients.”

Dr. Harvey Castro, a Dallas, Texas-based board-certified emergency medicine physician and national speaker on AI in health care, agreed that the tech has the potential to improve cancer diagnostics, but cautioned that limitations remain.

“The AI relies on diverse, high-quality data, and bias could limit effectiveness,” he told Fox News Digital.

“It’s also not fully validated for routine clinical use, and transparency and regulatory concerns remain unresolved.”

Castro reiterated that additional research is needed to determine how well AI adapts to real-world settings, the long-term impact on health care costs and outcomes, and whether the tech will be able to handle diverse populations and different clinical environments.

The researchers also acknowledged the potential limitations of the study.

“It is not a prospective study, so additional data is needed to know how it would perform in a real clinical setting,” Epstein told Fox News Digital.

OVARIAN CANCER COULD BE DETECTED EARLY WITH A NEW BLOOD TEST, STUDY FINDS

The team is planning to soon begin clinical studies at Stockholm South Hospital in Sweden, she added.

“It is still the physician who remains responsible for the patient’s diagnosis and treatment.”

Epstein noted that AI should only be used as a diagnostic support and not a replacement for human physicians.

“It is still the physician who remains responsible for the patient’s diagnosis and treatment,” she stated.

‘Seat squatter reverse’ is surprising air travel plot twist triggering reactions on social media

0

The “seat squatter” trend has been dominating social media with posters sharing their encounters with airline seat thieves.

The term “seat squatters” has been used to refer to those who rob the seats that were selected and paid for by other travelers.

In a post that reads quite differently from recent “seat squatter” tales, one flyer shared a twist involving an encounter with a fellow passenger.

FLIGHT PASSENGERS SOUND OFF OVER VIRAL MIDDLE-SEAT BOOKING HACK AND MORE AIR TRAVEL DEBATES

The traveler shared an experience on Reddit in the “r/delta” forum with the caption, “Seat squatter reverse [“UNO”]?”

“The squatter sat and got settled into the comp+ seat. The rightful person showed up shortly after and called the FA [flight attendant],” the user wrote.

The post continued, “Turns out the squatter was supposed to be in first and didn’t want to move so the rightful ticketed pax of the comp+ got the squatter’s first class seat.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Delta for comment.

“Don’t mind me while I sit here dumbfounded for the rest of this 3 hour flight,” the post concluded.

The post garnered more than 2,000 reactions.

Reddit users took to the comments section to discuss the plot twist.

One user commented, “That is stranger than fiction.” (iStock)

“Maybe just being a nice guy and paying it forward? Sounds like a good human,” said one.

A user questioned, “Maybe there was someone they didn’t want to sit near up in FC [first class]? Or they were already settled and didn’t want to get up again? Odd.”

“I had something kinda similar, wife got upgraded to first, husband didn’t and they’d rather be together in C+,” shared one.

Gary Leff, a travel industry expert, says if you want to swap seats, “Have a compelling reason that will resonate with the person you’re asking.” (iStock)

Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert and author of the blog “View From the Wing,” told Fox News Digital that although the person with the ticket is entitled to the seat, sometimes flyers can try their luck on board by simply asking others to swap.

“Have a compelling reason that will resonate with the person you’re asking,” said Leff.

Leff added that if you “have something decent to offer in return, it isn’t as much of a hardship for the person to give you what you want.”

Ozempic ‘microdosing’ is the new weight-loss trend: Should you try it?

0

A new trend gaining popularity among people trying to lose weight is microdosing the diabetes medication Ozempic.

With approximately 70% of American adults meeting the criteria for being obese or overweight, more people are turning to weight loss medications to help them shed pounds.

Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes, while its counterpart, Wegovy, is approved for treating obesity. Both are made by Novo Nordisk.

‘YO-YO’ WEIGHT LOSS OCCURS BECAUSE OF THIS SURPRISING REASON

Eli Lilly also offers a diabetes medication, Mounjaro, as well as a version for weight loss, Zepbound.

In a new trend, some people are using smaller daily “microdoses” of Ozempic, doctors report.  (iStock)

“Ozempic is the only version among the weekly injectables — Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound and Mounjaro — that has the option to ‘hack’ the pen for a smaller dose,” Dr. Alexandra Sowa, an obesity medicine specialist and founder of SoWell in New York, told Fox News Digital.

She is also the author of the book “The Ozempic Revolution” that is set to be released on Jan. 7.

Fox News Digital spoke to the experts to get the skinny on this latest trend.

What is microdosing?

Microdosing Ozempic refers to using smaller amounts compared to the standard therapeutic doses that are traditionally prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes and aiding weight loss, experts say.

This practice is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

IS EATING ONCE A DAY A GOOD IDEA? EXPERTS SHARE VARYING OPINIONS ON THE ‘OMAD DIET’

“Health care clinicians do not typically recommend this approach, as the standard dosing regimen is based on clinical trials determining the most effective and safe amount for these conditions,” noted Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

There are no established guidelines for microdosing – although there are reports on social media of using 10 to 100 times lower than standard prescriptions, added Dr. Christopher McGowan, a gastroenterologist and obesity specialist who runs True You Weight Loss in Cary, North Carolina.

“Health care clinicians do not typically recommend this approach.”

Some people get confused by the terminology, the doctors noted.

“I think there’s a little bit of a misconception, as some people say ‘I’m microdosing’ when they’re just on the starting doses or don’t go all the way up in the escalation titration dosing of the medication,” Sowa said.

Benefits of microdosing

The primary reason for microdosing is to reduce costs, according to McGowan.

For example, he said, a patient might think that if a full prescription costs over $250 per week, they may be able to achieve some benefit with just $25 worth of the medication.

Seniors Ozempic split

With approximately 70% of American adults meeting the criteria for being obese or overweight, more people are turning to weight loss medications to help them shed pounds. (iStock)

The average monthly retail price of Ozempic ranges from $1,000 or more without insurance, per GoodRx.

People may also pursue microdosing to reduce the incidence or severity of side effects such as nausea, vomiting or stomach discomfort, according to Stanford.

“Some individuals might start with microdoses to gradually acclimate their body to the medication, potentially easing into the full therapeutic dose over time,” she said.

CHEAP OZEMPIC KNOCK-OFFS HAVE RISEN IN POPULARITY

Any potential benefit of the medication, however, will likely wane proportionally with lower doses, experts noted.

Individuals may also microdose due to supply challenges, according to Dr. Amy Rothberg, clinical professor of medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes at the University of Michigan.

Insulin injection

“Some individuals might start with microdoses to gradually acclimate their body to the medication, potentially easing into the full therapeutic dose over time.” (iStock)

“Some feel they may derive a benefit from microdosing by being able to extend their supply and may perceive an effect,” Rothberg, who is also the medical director of Rewind, a lifestyle program for type 2 diabetes patients, told Fox News Digital. “As we know, the placebo effect may have a strong impact.”

Potential risks of the practice

The most likely risk of microdosing is a lack of effectiveness, McGowan noted.

“Microdosing Ozempic or other [weight-loss] medications is entirely off-label and unproven, with no supporting clinical studies,” he cautioned.

OZEMPIC COULD HELP REDUCE ALZHEIMER’S RISK FOR SOME, STUDY SUGGESTS: ‘SHIFTING THE PARADIGM’

Stanford also warned that smaller doses may not provide adequate blood sugar management, leading to uncontrolled diabetes and associated complications.

It can also lead to suboptimal weight loss and unpredictable results, as well as the potential for misuse, she added.

OZEMPIC PUSH FOR SENIORS? SOME DOCTORS SAY MORE PEOPLE AGE 65 AND OVER SHOULD BE ON IT

People who microdose often use a “compounded” version of the medication, which the FDA does not regulate.

“This introduces risks such as contamination, inconsistent formulations and uncertainty about the actual strength of the product being injected,” McGowan stated.

Obesity

Without changes to diet and physical activity patterns, the long-term benefits will disappear once the drug is stopped, one doctor noted. (iStock)

Additionally, these compounded versions are usually dispensed in vials, which requires a syringe to draw it up, in contrast to the FDA-approved versions that are simpler to use.

Using the compounded versions through vials runs the risk of drawing up too much medication — so instead of microdosing, it’s possible to macrodose, Sowa warned.

Medical supervision is key

Some providers are still comfortable offering microdosing for select patients with one caveat — that people should always consult a health care clinician before altering their medication regimen.

CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER

“As long as it is being dispensed and monitored by a physician, I don’t see how anybody is going to overdose, especially when we are giving such small amounts,” Dr. Suzanne A. Trott, a double board-certified plastic and general surgeon in Beverly Hills, told Fox News Digital.

“I have seen a lot of patients who are given metformin for weight loss — I don’t see how this is any different,” said Trott, who runs her own microdosing clinic.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Trott pointed out that there are many “off-label” practices offered to patients.

Botox and fillers are not even FDA-approved for most of the places we use them,” she noted.

“Some individuals might start with microdoses to gradually acclimate their body to the medication.”

Experts agree that sustained weight loss will not occur with medication alone.

“I think people find that it’s easier to take a drug, but neglect concomitant behavioral changes,” Rothberg said.

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health

In the absence of changes to diet and physical activity patterns, the long-term benefits will disappear once the drug is stopped, she noted.

Trott also recommends maintaining consistent exercise, strength training, hydration and high protein intake to maintain muscle mass.

Fox News Digital reached out to Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, for comment.

Israeli PM office denies reports that Hamas forwarded list of hostages to release in event of deal

0

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has denied reports that Hamas has forwarded a list of hostages to be released in a potential cease-fire agreement Sunday.

Reuters reported earlier Sunday that Hamas had approved a list of 34 hostages it may be willing to release in exchange for a cease-fire agreement. Hamas officials said the deal was contingent on Israel reaching an agreement to withdraw from Gaza and enact a permanent cease-fire.

“Contrary to what was claimed, Hamas has not forwarded a list of names of hostages until this moment,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.

The statement comes days after Netanyahu was released from hospital on Thursday after his prostate surgery.

His office said Netanyahu, 75, was in good condition and fully conscious after the conclusion of his prostate surgery.

The Israeli leader has undergone several health procedures over the past two years. In March, Netanyahu underwent hernia surgery under full anesthesia, and Deputy Prime Minister Yariv Levin temporarily assumed his role during the process.

Months before the Oct. 7 attacks, Netanyahu suffered dehydration and was admitted to a hospital in July 2023.  The Israeli leader said that he became dehydrated after visiting the Sea of Galilee without water or sun protection during a heatwave.

A week after being admitted for dehydration, Netanyahu’s doctors implanted a pacemaker to regulate his heart rate and rhythm.

Netanyahu’s most recent operation came as the 75-year-old politician continues to testify in a corruption case against him in Israel. He took the stand earlier in December and is expected to continue testifying in the new year.

Malicious apps posing as VPNs can turn your device into a tool for cyberattacks

0

Virtual private networks (VPNs) are important if you care about your data and privacy. They create a secure, encrypted connection between your device and the internet, hiding your IP address and protecting your online activity.

There are tons of apps out there that claim to offer VPN services, but not all of them are legit. Some are fakes trying to steal your data.

In the third quarter of 2024, security researchers found that the number of users encountering fake VPN apps jumped 2½ times compared to the second quarter globally. These apps were either malware or programs that could be used by malicious actors.

I’m diving into the rise of fake VPN apps and how you can stay safe.

What you need to know about the surge in fake VPN apps

According to Kaspersky, cybercriminals are taking advantage of people who want to use free VPN services. In May 2024, law enforcement shut down a botnet, a network of hijacked devices, called 911 S5. Several free VPN services, including MaskVPN, DewVPN, PaladinVPN, ProxyGate, ShieldVPN and ShineVPN, were used to create this botnet.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

When users installed these VPN apps, their devices were turned into proxy servers, meaning they were used to redirect someone else’s internet traffic

This huge network spread across 19 million unique IP addresses in over 190 countries, making it possibly the largest botnet ever created. The people controlling the botnet sold access to these infected devices to other criminals, who used them for cyberattacks, money laundering and fraud.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR PRIVATE DATA FROM THE INTERNET

Don’t trust free VPNs

You can’t trust free VPN apps because they have no reason to keep you or your data safe. Here’s why you should be cautious:

  • Data sharing: Many free VPNs share user data with third parties.
  • Weak encryption: About 36% of free VPNs use weak encryption, compromising your online security.
  • Data leaks: Nearly 90% of free VPNs leak some kind of data, with 17% leaking more than they should.
  • Unreliable connections: More than half of free VPNs have unstable connections.
  • Excessive permissions: Almost 70% ask for permissions they shouldn’t need, like tracking your location (20%) or checking what apps you have installed (46%).

Why people fall for fake VPNs

There’s a growing demand for VPN apps across all platforms, including smartphones and computers. Users often believe that if they find a VPN app in an official store, like Google Play, it’s safe to use. They’re especially drawn to free services, thinking it’s a great deal. However, this can often be a trap.

Choose trusted VPN services for optimal security and privacy

If you need a VPN, stick to a service that’s well-known, trusted and not free. Look for ones that are talked about on mainstream sites and backed by solid reviews. If you’re not sure where to start, I’ve put together a handy list of my favorite VPNs. I’ve tested them myself, and you can trust them to keep your data safe. For best VPN software, see my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

UNDERSTANDING BRUSHING SCAMS AND HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

7 important tips for choosing and using VPNs

Here are seven essential steps to help you choose a reliable VPN and safeguard your online privacy.

1. Stick to official app stores: Always download apps from trusted platforms like the App Store for iOS or the Google Play Store for Android. These stores have built-in security measures that help detect and remove fake or harmful apps. Avoid downloading apps from random websites or third-party stores, as they are more likely to host malicious software. Even on official stores, check the app’s reviews, ratings and download count to ensure it’s trustworthy.

2. Pay attention to app permissions: Be careful about the permissions you grant to apps during installation. A flashlight app, for example, doesn’t need access to your contacts or location. Question any permission that doesn’t align with the app’s functionality. Both iOS and Android allow you to review and manage app permissions in your settings, so take the time to double-check what you’ve already allowed.

3. Use two-factor authentication (2FA): Implement 2FA for your VPN accounts to add an extra layer of security beyond just a password.

4. Keep software updated: Regularly update all VPN-related software, including clients, servers and associated networking hardware, to benefit from the latest security patches and improvements.

5. Use strong encryption: Look for VPN services that use robust encryption protocols like AES-256 to protect your data.

6. Monitor VPN traffic: Continuously monitor VPN traffic and logs for unusual patterns that might indicate security issues.

7. Invest in strong antivirus software: A strong antivirus program can help detect and remove malware before it compromises your device. Many antivirus apps also come with features like web protection, anti-phishing tools and the ability to scan new apps for threats. While there are free options, premium versions often provide more comprehensive protection. Kurt’s key takeaway

Fake VPN apps are everywhere, and they’re bad news. They’re not just useless. They can turn your device into a tool for cybercriminals. The 911 S5 botnet showed us just how dangerous free VPNs can be, turning millions of devices into a giant network for fraud and attacks. The truth is free VPNs aren’t really free. They often come with weak security, leak your data or demand permissions that put your privacy at risk. If you’re serious about protecting your online activity, invest in a trusted, paid VPN service.

Botox for burping? Doctors use injections to treat ‘no-burp syndrome’

Burping is often considered a “faux pas,” as it can be embarrassing and off-putting, especially in social situations.

But for some, the inability to belch can be an issue that can cause discomfort. There is even a medical name for the condition: retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (R-CPD), also known as “no burp syndrome.”

The cricopharyngeus is the main muscle of the upper esophageal sphincter, the top gate of the food pipe. With no burp syndrome, this muscle does not relax, which interferes with the burping process, according to Neil Chheda, MD, associate professor and vice chair in the department of otolaryngology and chief of the division of laryngology at UF Health in Gainesville, Florida.

CDC INVESTIGATING FAKE BOTOX INJECTIONS: ‘SERIOUS AND SOMETIMES FATAL’

“Both men and women can be affected, and risk factors for developing this condition are not known,” Chheda told Fox News Digital.

It may not seem like an inability to burp is a big deal, but it can bring severe challenges, the doctor said.

“Those who can’t burp may report quality of life issues, such as bloating, a gurgling noise, and discomfort with certain foods and drinks, such as carbonated beverages,” Chheda said.

HERE’S WHY YOU’RE BLOATED — AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE COMMON DIGESTIVE CONDITION

Priya Krishna, MD, an otolaryngologist in the department of head and neck surgery at Loma Linda University in California, agreed that no burp syndrome can cause “significant psychological distress” in the affected person.

“It actually severely impacts the life of an individual, making social situations embarrassing because the gurgling can be loud and the flatulence excessive,” she told Fox News Digital.

“Those who can’t burp may report quality of life issues, such as bloating, a gurgling noise, and discomfort with certain foods and drinks.”

If over-the-counter options, prescription medications and lifestyle tweaks don’t solve the burping issues, patients can turn to Botox for a potential remedy, medical experts say.

Whether it’s injected into the face for a cosmetic procedure or elsewhere in the body for a functional reason, Botox works by preventing a motor nerve from releasing the chemical transmitter that signals a muscle to contract, explained Dr. Chheda with UF Health.

“When Botox is injected into the cricopharyngeus, the muscle can’t contract, and thereby relaxes and permits the venting of the esophagus.”

As a result, this can help a patient burp.

Dr. Krishna of Loma Linda University told Fox News Digital that a Botox injection can be a very safe procedure as long as it is injected into the correct and intended muscle.

“That means having a surgeon familiar with the anatomy — as all otolaryngologists are — injecting the cricopharyngeus muscle,” she said.

While it may not seem like an inability to burp is a big deal, it can bring severe challenges, a doctor said.  (iStock)

The remedy was discovered by Robert Bastian, MD, an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) and director of Bastian Voice Institute in Downers Grove, Illinois.

“I have subspecialized in laryngology (the ‘T’ of ENT), which means voice, swallowing, upper airway, sensory neuropathic cough and inability to burp, or R-CPD,” he told Fox News Digital. “So I describe myself as a ‘laryngologist.’”

Bastian said he pioneered the procedure that involves injecting Botox into the cricopharyngeal muscle, which enables it to loosen and permits burping.

What to expect from the procedure

There are two methods of using Botox to induce burping, according to Bastian.

The first is a brief procedure under general anesthesia in an outpatient operating room.

TO STOP THE HICCUPS, REACH FOR THESE COMMON FRUITS, ONE DOCTOR SUGGESTS ON TIKTOK

“A simple ‘scope’ procedure allows one to see the sphincter, at the junction between the low throat and opening of esophagus,” the doctor told Fox News Digital. “A tiny needle is then inserted into the muscle to inject Botox.”

Man burping

“Both men and women can be affected, and risk factors for developing this condition are not known,” a doctor told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

Because of the anesthesia, someone must drive the patient home after the procedure.

The second method is to inject the muscle while the patient is sitting in a chair in a doctor’s office

“A needle is passed into the muscle from the side of the neck. Surface landmarks and three-dimensional visualization are used by the surgeon, and an EMG device monitors and verifies muscle placement,” Bastian described.

The patient can drive to and from the procedure since only local anesthesia is used.

Bastian said it has been rewarding to pioneer the Botox method.

“It has been a great privilege to be the one to ‘discover’ and codify the diagnosis and help spread the information to other doctors … and above all, it has been an honor to work with lovely patients who have suffered so much and for so long with this terrible disorder,” he told Fox News Digital.

A patient of Bastian spoke about the effectiveness of the procedure, saying it has allowed them to burp, that “any gurgling is gone,” and that “bloating has diminished almost entirely,” the doctor shared.

The patient also noted that getting the procedure has “drastically” improved their day-to-day life.

Truck driver intervenes in highway shootout, wins Goodyear Highway Hero Award

0

Commercial truck drivers can be crucial to the country’s supply chain, but some serve as champions of safety on the road, acting as first responders in tough situations.

Timothy VanNostrand, 64, an owner/operator of his own logging transport company in Northville, New York, found himself springing into action while driving along Interstate 88 in June 2023.

“It happened so fast,” VanNostrand told Fox News Digital.

“It’s instinct more than anything else.”

While on transport along a New York highway, Timothy VanNostrand came upon a shootout between a state trooper and a fugitive and put himself in harm’s way, using his truck to block the man’s escape and shield other motorists from harm.  (Goodyear)

VanNostrand was passing a New York State trooper who had made a traffic stop that escalated into a shootout.

“I wasn’t 100% sure what I saw at first, but I saw the trooper kind of skip sideways a little bit,” VanNostrand said.

“And then I saw the shooter actually pull the gun in his car and start shooting right out through his own back window at the state trooper. A really intense shootout started, and bullets were flying.”

“It’s a long time when you’re standing there listening to it,” VanNostrand said.

“You’re second-guessing yourself, but it turned out it was the right decision.”

When backup arrived, the trooper, who had been wounded, was taken to the hospital and survived.

VanNostrand was later honored by the New York State Police and by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as a “Highway Hero.”

“The purpose of the Highway Hero program is to bring more awareness and appreciation to the powerful impact that commercial drivers can have on the roads, individuals’ lives and communities.”

— Joe Burke, vice president of Goodyear North America Commercial Business

Goodyear announced it is accepting nominations for its 41st annual Highway Hero Award, recognizing commercial truck drivers for going the extra mile while on the job.

“The Goodyear Highway Hero Award is one way Goodyear recognizes the importance of the commercial trucking industry, which helps move 72.5% of the U.S. economy’s goods, according to American Trucking Associations,” Joe Burke, vice president of Goodyear North America Commercial Business, told Fox News Digital.

Each year around the holiday season, Goodyear seeks nominations for drivers with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) who went above and beyond the call of duty to help others on the road.

Everyone from long-haul truckers to dump truck drivers, regional delivery and vocational vehicle operators and others are eligible for nomination.

Last year, VanNostrand and Elijah Ramos of Victorville, California, were named Highway Heroes for their acts of courage while on the road.

VanNostrand said his actions were all in a day’s work for someone in his industry.

“Most of the people I know and work with would do the same thing,” he said.

“We all look out for each other, and 99% of us are looking out for everybody else too.”
