2025 will welcome newest generation of kids, Gen Beta

0

Babies born in the year 2025 will begin the newest generation – Generation Beta.

Following Generation Alpha (2010 to 2024), Gen Beta will comprise a new group of kids born between 2025 and 2039.

The Australian research firm McCrindle predicted that Gen Beta will make up 16% of the world’s population by 2035, and many will live to see the 22nd century.

The research and analysis group, led by demographer and futurist Mark McCrindle, wrote in an article that Gen Beta “represents a pivotal chapter in our evolving world.”

“We named them Alpha and Beta to signify not just new generations, but the first generations that will be shaped by an entirely different world,” McCrindle stated.

Gen Beta will face a variety of fast-changing global factors, like evolving technology, societal challenges, sustainability and climate, experts say.

“The DNA of children doesn’t change, but the culture does – and it has a dramatic impact on how kids turn out.”

As Gen Beta will mostly be the children of younger millennials and older Gen Zers, their parents will prioritize “adaptability, equality and eco-consciousness in their parenting,” McCrindle predicted.

“This will result in Generation Beta being more globally minded, community-focused and collaborative than ever before,” the article reads. “Their upbringing will emphasize the importance of innovation not just for convenience, but for solving the pressing challenges of their time.”

As artificial intelligence grows in prevalence and access to technology continues to increase, Gen Beta’s digital and physical worlds will be “seamless,” according to analysts.

“Generation Beta will live in an era where AI and automation are fully embedded in everyday life — from education and workplaces to health care and entertainment,” McCrindle wrote.

The research group predicted that Gen Beta will likely be the first generation to experience autonomous transportation “at scale,” as well as wearable health technologies and immersive virtual environments as “standard aspects of daily life.”

“Their formative years will be marked by a greater emphasis on personalization — AI algorithms will tailor their learning, shopping and social interactions in ways we can only begin to imagine today.”

As Gen Beta kids enter a world of “always-on technology,” digital interactions will be key to social connections, education and careers, the analysts noted.

U.S. SURGEON GENERAL ADVISORY NAMES PARENT STRESS AN ‘URGENT PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE’

“We predict Generation Beta will embody the balance between hyper-connectivity and personal expression,” McCrindle said. “They’ll redefine what it means to belong, blending in-person relationships with global digital communities.”

Generational parenting

The fate of Gen Beta kids will largely hinge on their millennial and Gen Z parents, who welcome technology as a learning tool but are also wary of the risks of overexposure, according to experts.

“You can’t change the world, but you can change how you’re parenting.”

Educational psychologist and parenting expert Dr. Michele Borba noted that parents will need to pay attention to what Gen Beta needs to thrive.

PSYCHOLOGISTS REVEAL 7 WAYS PARENTS CAN DRIVE HAPPINESS BY HELPING KIDS FIND THEIR PURPOSE

“The DNA of children doesn’t change, but the culture does – and it has a dramatic impact on how kids turn out,” California-based Borba said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

“That said, you can’t change the world, but you can change how you’re parenting.”

Paying attention to what drives your child is crucial to their development and happiness, according to one psychologist. (iStock)

“The first step [for parents] is to recognize the changes that are happening … so they can make sure they’re raising a strong generation of kids who can handle a new world,” she added.

Gen Beta will be a “generation of digital natives,” born into a world where their chores, shopping and even homework can be done for them, according to the psychologist.

“Critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication – those will all be impacted by AI,” Borba predicted.

She suggested that parents teach their Gen Beta kids to be adaptable, as things like technology and job markets will see major changes in their lifetime.

Borba also encouraged parents to remain calm during uncertain times, as children will mirror that response.

The psychologist also stressed the importance of children getting enough social interaction, especially if they don’t have siblings.

“What’s crucial to the well-being of our children is strong social relationships,” she said.

Social regression has already impacted the youngest generations, Borba warned, resulting in shorter attention spans and a fear of taking risks.

For parents raising kids of an entirely new generation, she went on, it’s essential to pinpoint and nurture their strengths.

“Figure out who your kid is,” she advised. “From a very early age, figure out what drives them, not what you want them to become.”

Receiving unexpected international calls? What you need to know

0

Receiving unexpected international calls can be a source of anxiety for many individuals. Whether it’s a single ring from an unknown number or multiple missed calls from abroad, the uncertainty can leave you wondering about the implications for your privacy and security.

Kathy S. recently reached out with a concern many of us can relate to: “I have received calls from Beijing and Russia on my cellphone. I did not answer them. Can you tell me why this is happening? Is my phone at risk?”

If you’ve experienced similar calls, you’re not alone. Let’s examine this issue and discover what’s really going on.

Receiving unexpected international calls? What you need to know

The rise of international call scams

International call scams have become increasingly common in recent years. One particularly prevalent scam is known as “Wangiri,” which originates from Japan and means “one-ring-and-cut.” These scammers typically let your phone ring once or twice before hanging up, hoping to pique your curiosity and prompt a callback.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR IPHONE & IPAD FROM MALWARE

Why are you receiving these international scam calls?

There are several reasons why you might be receiving calls from unfamiliar international numbers.

Wangiri scam: Scammers use automated systems to call thousands of numbers, disconnecting after one ring. If you call back, you may be connected to a premium rate number, incurring significant charges.

Telemarketing and robocalls: Some companies use international numbers to bypass local regulations and reach a wider audience.

Number spoofing: Scammers can make their calls appear to come from different countries, tricking you into answering.

HOW TO STOP ANNOYING ROBOCALLS

Is your phone at risk?

While receiving unexpected international calls doesn’t necessarily put your phone at immediate risk, there are several potential dangers to be aware of. The primary risk lies in potential financial losses if you engage with these scammers. If you call back, you may be connected to a premium rate service number owned by the fraudster. You could also be charged heavily for these calls, with the scammer aiming to keep you on the line to increase the billed amount.

While less common with Wangiri scams, there’s always a risk of personal information theft if you engage with unknown callers. Sharing sensitive data like bank account numbers or Social Security numbers could lead to identity theft.

Answering or returning these calls may signal to scammers that your number is active, potentially leading to more scam calls in the future. Although not typically associated with Wangiri scams, some sophisticated phone scams can potentially install malware on your device if you click on certain links, prompts or follow instructions given by the scammer.

The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

How to protect yourself

While these international calls can be concerning, there are several steps you can take to safeguard yourself and your personal information. Here are six effective strategies to help protect against potential scams and unwanted calls.

1) Don’t answer or call back: If you receive a call from an unknown international number, resist the urge to answer or return the call.

2) Block suspicious numbers: Use your phone’s built-in features to block these numbers and prevent future calls.

3) Report the calls: Inform your phone carrier and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) about these suspicious calls.

4) Use call-blocking apps: Consider installing call-blocking apps to identify and block spam calls.

5) Be cautious with personal information: Never share sensitive data over the phone, especially with unfamiliar callers.

6) Invest in personal data removal services: Consider using services that remove your personal data from the internet, reducing the chances of scammers obtaining your information. While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

Kurt’s key takeaways

While unexpected international calls can be alarming, understanding the nature of these scams empowers you to protect yourself. By staying informed and following the preventive measures outlined above, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to these schemes. Remember, your best defense is a combination of caution, awareness and proactive steps to safeguard your personal information.

That includes the approval of “innovative” drugs like Tryvio for high blood pressure, Neffy for severe allergic reactions and Dupixent for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which all gained FDA approval this year.

These medications are “slated to make a big clinical impact for those who need them,” according to GoodRx, a California-based digital health care platform.

“We also prioritized medications with effectiveness or safety data that represent a notable advantage over other medications recommended by clinical treatment guidelines or mainstay medical organizations.”

Seat squatting as New Year starts annoys flight passengers: ‘Couldn’t believe’ it

The “seat squatter” trend may have dominated travel experiences in 2024 — but it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon in this New Year of 2025.

Travelers continue to reveal their “seat-squatting” encounters on social media as commenters chime in and debate the hot issue.

An experience shared on Reddit in the “r/delta” forum with the caption, “Seat squatter caught and rude entire flight,” has continued to spark discussion.

‘GATE LICE’ AND ‘SEAT SQUATTERS’ AMONG 2024’S MOST VIRAL TRAVEL TRENDS

The term “seat squatters” has been used to refer to those who rob the seats that were selected and paid for by other travelers.

Discussing a flight from Cancún, Mexico, to Los Angeles, California, the traveler posted, “I couldn’t even believe my eyes after seeing all the seat squatter posts.”

A flight passenger shared a “seat squatter” story on Reddit about a couple with a dog (not pictured) that tried to claim a whole row of seats. (Stephen Chernin via Getty Images)

The person added, “We’re finally boarding and this couple about our age (late 20s/early 30s) is in our row, which can’t be right because we’re [in] the middle and aisle [seats]. I tell them they’re in my seat … and they oddly start fumbling around and mentioning they have a dog with them.”

The user said she responded that she was allergic to dogs — and that she paid for the seats.

He placed his arm over the armrest, applying pressure to her arm, she said.

“They both start fumbling around more and [the] female, who was originally in the window seat [that] I presume they did actually book, and [the] male who was sitting in my seat, both get out of the row so the female and dog can go to the window seat behind us,” she added.

FLIGHT PASSENGER CALLS OUT FELLOW FLYERS FOR BAD HABIT, SHARES FIX FOR PROBLEM

The man, for his part, then moved to the window seat in her row, she said.

He placed his arm over the armrest, applying pressure to her arm — which prompted her to switch seats with her fiancé in the row, she said.

“Once we finally get off the plane … my fiancé tells me this guy silently fought with him over the armrest the same way he did with me for the entire flight,” she wrote in her post.

A user shared a story about “squatters” stealing plane seats as an etiquette expert weighed in on the hot travel trend, offering sage advice. (iStock)

“I cannot rationalize how or why this man did this when we did absolutely nothing to him other than ask to sit in our own seats,” the poster added in her story.

Reddit users took to the comment section to assess the situation and share their own experiences with “seat squatters.”

“I doubt people that are already OK with breaking the rules are going to be great people.”

“It’s only happened to me once, thankfully. But my rule of thumb is that I’ll be polite on the initial interaction in case it’s a legitimate unintentional mistake [that] they’re sitting in my seat. In that case, they’ll get up and move and there’s no harm, no foul,” said one.

MAN ON VACATION GOES VIRAL FOR BLUNT ANSWER TO QUESTION: ‘NO, I’M NOT HAVING FUN’

Another added, “Omg, it sounds like you were flying with a bunch of bratty teenagers.”

“I doubt people that are already OK with breaking the rules are going to be great people, unfortunately,” commented yet another user.

Some users debated the notion of which passenger gets the armrests in the middle seat.

“The ‘middle seat gets both armrests’ thing is entirely an online knowledge thing. Yes, it’s courteous & makes sense if you think about it, but the average [person who] flies once/twice per year … likely doesn’t know or think about it,” commented one user.

Another stated, “Everyone knows the middle seat gets both arm rests.”

“The middle person does not in fact get both arm rests,” another user said. “That’s a made-up rule and you can’t get mad at someone who doesn’t follow that.”

Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert and author of the blog “View From the Wing,” told Fox News Digital that the person holding the seat assignment on their boarding pass is entitled to that seat.

“[Flyers] may not be able to get what they want from the airline when reserving seats, or the airline may want a fee for the seats they want and the passenger doesn’t want to pay — so they’ll try their luck on board,” said Leff.

Leff suggested that instead of stealing seats, flyers can try asking others directly to swap seats with them.

California-based etiquette expert Rosalinda Randall told Fox News Digital that “it is never OK to seat-squat once on board. Eventually, the passenger with that seat assignment will claim it.”

“Immediately request assistance from the flight attendant.”

Randall said when dealing with a seat squatter, it is best to address the situation calmly and in good faith.

“If the seat squatter refuses to move, do not engage; do not recruit other passengers to rally,” she said.

Rather, “immediately request assistance from the flight attendant.”

The biggest Wi-Fi mistake you didn’t know you were making

0

You’ve got dinner in the oven, you’re looking for extra glasses, and your cousin’s kid screams (again), “What’s the Wi-Fi password?” You’re juggling a hundred things at once, and the last thing you want to do is to spell out your password.

Here’s the good news: You can slap a printout on the fridge, and everyone can scan it with their phones to connect. But first, I’ll show you how to create a separate network so you don’t need to worry about little Billy getting into your personal stuff on your devices and computers.

SCAMMERS ARE TARGETING TEENS WITH THESE NASTY TRICKS

I share smart tech news and tips you can use every single day. Join 600K readers who get The Current.

Be my guest

When guests connect to your main Wi-Fi, they can potentially access devices like smart TVs, printers, and even your laptop or phone if file sharing is enabled. Worse, if their device is compromised, your whole network could be at risk. A guest network keeps everyone happy while keeping your private life private.

Most modern routers let you set up a guest network without having to be a tech guru. Warning: This will take you a few minutes, but it’s totally doable.

RELATED: Is your internet slo-o-o-w? Let’s fix that.

Step 1: Log into your router’s admin console. You’ll need your IP address. You can usually find this on a sticker on the bottom or side of your router. Seeing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 is common.

Routers

If you don’t see yours …

  • On Windows: Open the Start menu, search for “Command Prompt” and, with your Command Prompt open, type in ipconfig and press Enter. Look for the line that says “Default Gateway.” This is your router’s IP address.
  • On Mac: Go to System Settings > Network. Select your Wi-Fi network > Advanced. Your router’s IP address is under Router.

Step 2: Open your browser, type http:// and paste in your IP address. Hit Enter to open a login page. For the credentials, try the username admin and the word password for the password. If the defaults are different, they’re likely printed on your router. You can also check this site that lists default passwords for almost every router in use.

Step 3: Look for a setting called Guest Network or Guest Wi-Fi. Give it a different name (aka SSID) than your main network, along with a strong, unique password.

TECH TIP: SAVE YOUR MEMORIES BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE

If you have snoops in the family … When family and friends connect to your Wi-Fi guest network, you can block them from accessing your files or devices on your primary network. Turn off the local access setting.

Sorry, but dedicated snoops won’t stop at one closed door. Here’s a sign someone is poking around.

While you’re at it, a quick security check

Before you finish, take these extra steps to lock things down:

BIOMETRIC DATA: IS IT SAFE TO HAND IT OVER TO ANY COMPANY THAT ASKS?

  • Change your admin password: If your router still uses the default login, update it.
  • Update your firmware, too: Check for software updates to keep your router secure from vulnerabilities.

Your network is a bigger target than you realize.

Now for the fun part

Girl squinting screen

Create a QR code that automatically connects guests to your new guest network — no hassle, no drama. With the free site QIFI.org, all you need is three pieces of info:

  1. SSID: This is your Wi-Fi network name. Find it on the back of your modem, in the admin console or on your network app.
  2. Encryption type: Choose WPA/WPA2/WPA3. You can find this in your phone’s Wi-Fi section under the network details.
  3. Key: This is your router password. It’s on the back of your router if you’ve never changed it. (Please tell me you’ve changed it!)

Hit Generate and your QR code is ready. Print some copies of it to hang around the house, or do what I did: Order this custom sign that looks classy. Now, when someone asks for the Wi-Fi password, you can just point.

New Year’s Eve storm could make Northern Lights visible in US as Americans ring in 2025

0

For the last time before the New Year, the stunning colors of the aurora borealis might be visible for those who live in the northern border of America.

Solar storms, a result of two bursts of plasma hurtling towards Earth, may bring the Northern Lights into view early this week, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“A flurry of activity occurred the weekend of 28-29 December as active regions and (sun) spot groups became unstable,” the NOAA’S Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) reported.

CATCH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN THE US AND AROUND THE WORLD WITH THESE VIEWING TIPS

And, tonight might just be the perfect opportunity to catch the dancing colors in the night sky.

A tracker on the NOAA’s website noted that it “shows a ‘viewline’ that represents the southernmost locations from which you may see the aurora on the northern horizon.

Alaska, Washington, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine have the possibility of taking in the spectacular light display.

RARE CHANCE TO SEE NORTHERN LIGHTS MAY BE POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND DUE TO SOLAR FLARE

While parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and even New York might get a slight view of the lights.

“Aurora can often be observed somewhere on Earth from just after sunset or just before sunrise,” the NOAA reported.

“The aurora does not need to be directly overhead but can be observed from as much as 1,000 km away when is the aurora is bright and if conditions are right.”

FOX Weather reported that one of the coronal mass ejections (CME) hit the Earth’s atmosphere Tuesday afternoon, which resulted in a Geomagnetic Storm Watch through the first day of the New Year.

NORTHERN LIGHTS MAY BE SEEN ACROSS SOME PORTIONS OF US THIS WEEK AFTER ‘STRONG SOLAR ACTIVITY’

The SWPC anticipates the geomagnetic storm will continue into Tuesday evening, as people will ring in the New Year all around the country.

When it comes to seeing the Northern Lights, there are a few factors to take note of in order to maximize your view — location, timing, geomagnetic activity and darkness.

Location

The most important thing when it comes to your location, is finding a spot with little to no obstructions.

“Aim to find a place that has minimal tree lines or hills so that the northern horizon can be fully seen,” Fox News previously reported.

Timing

The best time to see the lights is in the late evening or early morning, which is certainly the case this New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Maine Northern Lights

“Best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time),” according to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

“There may be aurora in the evening and morning, but it is usually not as active and therefore, not as visually appealing.”

Geomagnetic activity

When the geomagnetic field is active, the aurora will be brighter, stronger and further from the magnetic poles, according to the SWPC.

The best time to see the Northern Lights is when the planetary K index is at an eight or nine, and the aurora moves toward the equator, the weather service site said.

“Strong, Level 3 out of 5, geomagnetic storms are possible on Tuesday, and minor Level 1 storming is forecast for New Year’s Day. However, space weather forecasters are considering upgrading the watch to a Level 2,” FOX Weather reported.

Darkness

“The full moon will also diminish the apparent brightness of the aurora (not the actual brightness),” the SWPC continued.

You’ll also want to be sure it’s a clear night, with no clouds in the sky.

Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie reach divorce settlement after bitter 8-year legal battle

0

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reached a settlement in their divorce after an acrimonious and highly-publicized eight-year legal battle.

Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, told Fox News Digital that the 61-year-old actor and the 49-year-old actress signed off on their divorce Monday.

“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” Simon said in a statement. “She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”

A source close to the matter told Fox News Digital, “She doesn’t speak ill of him publicly or privately. She’s been trying hard to be light after a dark time.”

“The kids have grown up seeing that some people have so much power and privilege that their voices don’t matter,” the insider added. “Their pain doesn’t count. They have wanted her to speak up for herself, to defend herself over these years but she reminds them to focus on changing laws over telling public stories.”

A representative for Pitt declined to comment on the settlement.

Jolie and Pitt met on the set of their 2004 movie “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and they went public with their romance after the actor and his then-wife Jennifer Aniston announced their separation. The couple became tabloid fixtures with their relationship, earning the moniker “Brangelina.”

In August 2014, the former couple tied the knot at their French vineyard, Château Miraval.

The two share sons Maddox, Pax and Knox, 16, and daughters Zahara, Shiloh and Vivienne.

In 2016, the actress filed for divorce after accusing Pitt of physically abusing her and their children during an altercation on a private jet. Pitt denied the allegations, and no charges were filed against him after the FBI conducted an investigation in 2016.

A judge in 2019 declared Jolie and Pitt divorced and single, but the splitting of assets and child custody needed to be settled separately.

Soon after, a private judge that the two had hired to handle the case reached a decision that included equal custody of their children, but Jolie filed to have him removed from the case over an unreported conflict of interest. An appeals court agreed, removing the judge and vacating his decision. The former couple had to start the process over.

During the long divorce battle, four of their children became adults, negating the need for a custody agreement for them. The only minors who remain are 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. In June, Shiloh, then known as Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, successfully petitioned to remove Pitt’s name from her surname.

Pitt and Jolie have also been locked in an intense legal battle over Château Miraval. A judge ruled Pitt’s claims that he brought against Jolie in 2022 can go to trial in an order issued in November, Fox News Digital confirmed. Pitt accused his ex-wife of breaching the former couple’s contract when she sold her shares of their winery to the Stoli Group “secretly.”

The judge ruled Pitt and Jolie had an implied contract and a verbal agreement. A written agreement existed regarding shares in the holding company, according to the order, which was obtained by Fox News Digital.

To resolve this matter outside of court, Pitt asked Jolie to reverse the sale of her stake in Miraval to Yuri Shefler.

The former couple bought a controlling stake in Château Miraval in 2008 and spent time at the home throughout their relationship. Jolie attempted to sell her company, Nouvel, to Tenute Del Mondo, a subsidiary of the Stoli Group, in 2021, effectively transferring her 50% ownership interest in Miraval. Pitt has fought this sale, claiming the move breached a contract between the two.

Meanwhile, Jolie’s company claimed Pitt has been the mastermind of a “vindictive campaign” to “loot” the profitable business since she first filed for divorce.

According to The Associated Press, the divorce agreement does not affect the winery lawsuit, where the legal battle between the two stars could continue.

Since his split from Jolie, Pitt has moved on with jewelry designer Ines de Ramon. The pair’s relationship was confirmed in November 2022. In recent months, Pitt and de Ramon have taken their romance public, attending multiple events together.

In September, the couple made their first red carpet appearance at the Venice Film Festival.

In October, a source told People magazine that Jolie is currently single.

“Angelina remains focused on her family and is not dating at this time,” the insider said.
