Flight passenger sparks debate about ‘manspreading’ on planes after fellow flyer rests foot in her space

0

A traveler who shared a photo of a man invading her space by placing his foot in front of her on an airplane is sparking a discussion on Reddit.

Titled “Why do men do this,” the user wrote in the post, “Manspreading is not just for subways and buses. I mean I was in the middle seat and already at a disadvantage and then had to share my foot space?”

On the sub-Reddit forum titled “r/americanairlines,” users debated whether the man was intruding on the female passenger’s space.

The photo shows the man’s black sneakers resting to the left of the space under the seat in front of her.

“Stomp away,” joked one.

A traveler (not pictured) who said she was flying on American Airlines posted a photo on Reddit showing a passenger with his foot in front of her. (iStock)

Another chimed in, “You just got a free footrest.”

“In no way shape or form is this acceptable. Maybe for medical concerns but that’s something he needs to account for prior to booking the flight,” added a user.

FLIGHT PASSENGERS SITTING IN THIS ROW MUST PASS CERTAIN REQUIREMENTS: WHAT TO KNOW

One user said, “He needs to get himself a bigger seat so he is not TAKING HER SPACE, not “give her as much room as he can” as if he is doing her a favor, especially since she is already in the middle.”

Many users debated whether the man was actually “manspreading.”

“Sexist comment, all people do this,” commented a Redditor.

Another added, “PLEAAASE in all my years of flying I’ve never seen a woman do this. Yall sound ridiculous crying sexism in these comments.”

“No chance this guy does this to another man,” one user commented.

“It’s not just men. Plenty of people are inconsiderate. Ask them politely to move. If they don’t, ask FA [flight attendant] for help,” added another.

Some users blamed the design of the plane.

“Not that it’s ok to take over someone else’s foot space but to be fair those electrical boxes are situated in the EXACT place you would want to put your right foot and there really isn’t a good solution…,” one user wrote.

Another person added, “Unacceptable, but the real question is why in 2024 do they need those electrical boxes given how slender screens are.”

“From the looks of it, it is an economy seat…not even a need for seat power. Just poor planning and a lack of innovation (and care),” the comment added.

Other users said the passenger should have addressed the situation as opposed to posting about it on social media.

“It’s not just men. Plenty of people are inconsiderate,” one person commented on the post. (iStock)

“Anyone (it’s not a guy thing) will do this because you’re allowing them to. It’s your space, assert your right to it. But posting to Reddit isn’t going to solve the situation,” said one.

A Redditor commented, “we have to start talking to each other and not hide behind politeness and then go online about it. None of us can help you.”

Another added, “be an adult and address the issue to him.”

“Ask politely, but firmly,” one user suggested.

Jacqueline Whitmore, a former flight attendant and etiquette expert based in Mount Dora, Florida, told Fox News Digital via email, “If someone is invading your personal space on an airplane, it’s best to handle the situation directly and diplomatically.”

“You could always put your personal belongings next to the offender’s foot and say, ‘Excuse me.’ This will let the person know (indirectly) that they are invading your space,” she added.

Mexico to impose tax for cruise ship visitors starting in 2025

0

Mexican officials may be rocking the boat with visitors by introducing a new tourist tax.

A $42 immigration levy for every passenger on cruise ships that dock in Mexico was voted in by the country’s congress last week, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Stewart Chiron, a Miami-based cruise industry expert known as “The Cruise Guy,” told Fox News Digital that “the cruise industry and Mexico have enjoyed a very strong, beneficial relationship.”

FLIGHT PASSENGERS VISITING THIS VACATION SPOT WILL HAVE TO PAY A FEE JUST TO LEAVE THE ISLANDS

Chiron says cruises contribute to the country’s economy with jobs, spending, taxes, and port fees.

Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association CEO Michele Paige wrote a letter to the President of Mexico opposing the tax.  (iStock)

“Cruise lines, unlike hotels, are able to move their ships. I’m sure cruise industry executives are working to set up meetings to work toward an amicable solution,” Chiron added.

“I would think cruise passengers would voice an opinion to skip Mexico in lieu of a $42 fee hike,” he said.

Roughly 16.9 million passengers from the United States cruised in 2023, according to the Cruise Lines International Association.

Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) CEO Michele Paige penned a letter to Mexican President, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, expressing her disappointment and concern.

“The Government’s plan to eliminate the ‘in-transit’ exemption status that has been in place for cruise passengers for over a decade impacts the livelihoods of tens of thousands of Mexican citizens, countless small businesses, and communities along Mexico’s coastlines that depend on cruise tourism,” Paige wrote in the letter, which was sent by the FCCA to Fox News Digital.

Paige added, “Cruise lines will inevitably reevaluate the viability of these investments considering the potential loss of consumer demand for Mexico cruises driven by the unprecedented tax increase on cruise tourism.”

The FCAA predicts the tax will make cruise tourism in Mexico 213% more expensive than the average Caribbean port, according to a press release.

“The additional per-person proposed tax, combined with existing taxes and fees, is a cost that cannot be easily absorbed by most cruise guests,” the release said.

Out of the funds raised by the tax, about two-thirds would go to the Mexican army, according to the AP.

Other vacation destinations have recently implemented taxes or raised tourist taxes in recent months.

Greek officials are planning to impose a $22 tax for visitors cruising to Santorini or Mykonos, Fox News Digital reported in September.

And, the Maldives in South Asia, known for its clear waters and luxury resorts, has raised a flight tax aimed at tourists leaving the islands.

Elton John’s vision loss: How an eye infection can lead to this extreme

0

World-renowned singer-songwriter Elton John confirmed he has lost sight in his right eye after suffering from a severe infection.

On the opening night of his musical adaptation of “The Devil Wears Prada” in London, John shared, “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight.”

“So, it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight,” he said.

ELTON JOHN HAS ‘LOST MY EYESIGHT’ FOLLOWING SEVERE INFECTION

John first posted to his Instagram account in September that he had been dealing with a “severe eye infection” over the summer that has “unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye.”

“Since Sir Elton John did not state what type of eye infection he has, it is unclear whether he has complete blindness in his right eye or if there is still some partial vision,” Dr. Thuy Tran, optometrist and founder of Oculist in New York City, told Fox News Digital.

“It is possible that he may still be able to perceive light and motion, but is unable to discern enough details to read letters or musical notes,” added Tran, who did not treat the singer.

“He may also be experiencing other signs and symptoms, such as thick mucous discharge, pain, irritation, excessive tearing and redness.”

Types of eye infections

The most common types of eye infections are viral conjunctivitis and bacterial conjunctivitis, according to Tran.

“Viral conjunctivitis, caused by adenovirus, are like common colds and typically resolve on their own within a few weeks,” she said.

“When caused by herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus (same virus that is responsible for chicken pox and shingles), or cytomegalovirus (seen in immunocompromised individuals i.e. those with HIV/AIDS), more serious complications, such as corneal scarring, retinal damage and vision loss, may result.”

ASK A DOCTOR: ‘WHY ARE MY EYES OFTEN BLOODSHOT?’

Bacterial eye infections usually resolve within a week with proper antibiotic treatment, usually eyedrops or ointment, the doctor noted.

“A hyperacute bacterial eye infection, however, can be severe and rapidly progressive,” Tran warned. “If not treated immediately, it can lead to corneal ulcers, scarring and blindness.”

“This condition is most commonly caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a type of bacteria that can be transmitted through sexual contact.”

Fungal eye infections are often caused by fungi that are naturally present in our environment, according to Tran.

“Common risk factors include trauma to the eye with plant material, extended contact lens wear and diabetes,” she said.

Fungal infections are usually treated with topical or oral antifungal therapies.

“Rarely, they can lead to a medically-urgent condition known as endophthalmitis, which often requires hospitalization for administration of intravenous medications.”

Potential for permanent damage

Dr. Derek Cunningham, eye doctor and director of Dell Laser Consultants in Austin, Texas, also spoke with Fox News Digital about the dangers of both internal and external infections in the eyes.

JULIE BOWEN OF ‘MODERN FAMILY’ GETS REAL ABOUT CHRONIC DRY EYE: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE PROGRESSIVE CONDITION

An internal infection can be caused by a virus, said Cunningham, who also did not treat Elton John. If it reaches the retina, or the back of the eye, permanent vision loss can occur.

More commonly, eye infections are the result of external triggers and trauma to the front of the eye, like scratches, chemical splashes or the misuse of contact lenses, he noted.

These incidents then allow bacteria and other foreign organisms to “colonize in the eye,” Cunningham said.

“Because [the eye] is specifically designed to transmit light, the cellular structure of all the tissues is very precise, and it cannot be altered.”

“So, any amount of immune response or even bacterial or viral infection is going to cause not only a disruption in the cells, but it could potentially cause scarring – and that is going to reduce vision, very often on a permanent level,” he went on.

While the eye is sensitive and may have a harder time warding off infection since it’s a “compartmentalized” system, Cunningham said, the cornea is also the “fastest-healing tissue in the human body.”

Eye infections are more likely to affect the elderly, according to an expert. (iStock)

But as people age, the body heals more slowly – so someone like John, who is 77 years old, will be at a higher risk of elongated infection compared to those who are younger.

“A little kid can scratch their eye and within hours be completely healed,” Cunningham said. “In an elderly person, [injury] can last for days, and that’s where the chance of infection builds up – every minute that the tissue is still compromised.”

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health

Some eye complications can be spotted and addressed early on during routine eye exams.

Cunningham recommends paying attention to visual function – and if vision is compromised, symptoms should be evaluated by a doctor.

“If there is … anything really infectious in the eye, the potential for vision loss is extremely high — and it’s permanent. It very often doesn’t ever come back.”

Representatives for John did not return Fox News Digital’s immediate request for comment.

An empty 16-story building located in downtown Macon, Georgia, will be the center of a New Year’s Eve celebration to ring in 2025.

The former hotel will be blown up as the clock strikes midnight.

“We acquired this property to blow it up,” Macon Mayor Lester Miller said in a press release.

The hotel was purchased by Macon-Bibb County for $4.5 million in a federal bankruptcy proceeding and the county is willing to spend up to $2.6 million to hire a demolition firm to blow up the building, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

“The way you start your new year is how you spend your entire year, so we’re going big and taking down a blighted building, making way for economic and community development, and bringing people together to remember our past and celebrate our future, all at the same time,” Miller added in the release.

Originally opened in 1970, the hotel is known to have hosted Elvis Presley before being seized in 1991 by the New York Banking Department, alleging it was an asset involved in a fraud case, according to the AP.

The last operating business that occupied the building was in 2017, the Ramada Plaza.

“Several groups have tried over the years to bring the property back to life and capitalize on the ongoing and increasing success of Downtown, but none of those plans have come to fruition,” said the Macon-Bib County Government press release.

The release went on to say, “The current building has undergone multiple rounds of attempts to renovate it, but there are too many challenges in the outdated design and lack of meeting current fire and safety codes to make renovations viable.”

Russ Henry, a member of the vestry that oversees Christ Episcopal Church, told the AP that the church would like officials to be more cautious with their plan.

“It’s an eyesore to the whole community, we would love to have something else there… We just want to make sure that our church doesn’t get blown up on our bicentennial,” he said.

“Clear Smiles Dental” Adds New Dental Physician and Dental Inhouse Lab 53

With the recent addition of a new dental physician and an innovative in-house lab at their Weston office, they’re excited to elevate patient experiences even further.

Pembroke Pines, Florida, December 4, 2024 – Dental Care is often overlooked, yet it plays a crucial role in overall health. Regular check-ups help prevent serious issues like cavities and gum disease.

Maintaining good oral hygiene can greatly lower the risk of infections. Healthy teeth and gums not only boost confidence and self-esteem but also enhance social interactions. On the other hand, dental issues can lead to serious health complications, as research has shown a strong connection between poor oral health and conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Benefits of In-house Dental Labs:

In-house dental labs offer numerous advantages for both patients and practitioners. By having a dedicated lab on-site, Clear Smiles Dental can provide quicker turnaround times for dental restorations. This means less waiting for crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Most dentists outsource their crowns and other prosthesis to other dental labs, in house services. allows for better quality control, ensuring patients get the best crown that matches their existing teeth shade. A Master Ceramist will begin working at the Weston location furnishing high-end quality restorations.

Another significant benefit is improved communication between the dentist and the lab technicians. With everyone under one roof, adjustments can be made swiftly. If a patient needs modifications to their appliance, it can often be done in real-time.

In-house labs elevate the standards of quality control. Dentists have direct oversight of the fabrication process, ensuring that every restoration meets high standards before reaching the patient.

Clear Smiles Dental stands out by offering warranties on most services, including crowns, root canals, and implants, with some warranties lasting up to 5 years. Unlike many other providers, we proudly stand behind the quality of our work.

The team is thrilled to welcome Dr. Joneli Acosta, the new dental physician at the Margate location. With a passion for patient care, Dr. Joneli Acosta brings years of experience in general dentistry and specialized training.

She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from a prestigious university, where she graduated with honors. Her commitment to ongoing education ensures that she stays current with the latest advancements in dental techniques and technologies.

At Clear Smiles Dental, cutting-edge technology is at the forefront of patient care. The practice invests in advanced tools that enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficiency.

The new digital veneer workflow lets patients preview their future smile with a digital mockup. This innovative feature can even be shared during a teledentistry appointment, saving time and enhancing convenience.

Malicious Play Store apps put 8 million Android users at risk

0

Malicious apps are pretty common, and it’s easy to accidentally download them if you’re not cautious. You’ll often find these apps on third-party app stores, shady websites, or through suspicious emails and texts. What you wouldn’t expect is to encounter them on the Google Play Store if you’re an Android user or the App Store if you’re on iPhone

While Apple does a great job of keeping its app marketplace safe, Google doesn’t quite measure up.

A new report has revealed that over a dozen malicious apps containing SpyLoan malware have been available on the Play Store. These apps have been downloaded by 8 million Android users, putting them at risk of extortion, harassment and financial loss. Below are images of four of the SpyLoan apps found on Google Play.

malicious play store 1

Images of four of the SpyLoan apps found on Google Play (McAfee)

What is SpyLoan malware?

SpyLoan is malware often hidden in apps that promise instant loans. These apps reel people in with offers of quick, hassle-free loans, boasting low rates and hardly any requirements. While they might look legit at first glance, their real goal is to gather as much personal info as they can.

Once they have it, they use it to harass or pressure users into paying ridiculous interest rates. They also use shady tactics like countdown timers or “limited-time” offers to create a fake sense of urgency, pushing people to act fast without thinking it through. Instead of helping with finances, these apps trap users in a cycle of debt and invade their privacy.

McAfee’s mobile research team has uncovered 15 apps on the Google Play Store packed with SpyLoan malware. These apps use the same code and systems, targeting users worldwide to steal data and send it to command-and-control (C2) servers. Many of them hide behind fake names and logos that mimic legitimate financial institutions, making them look trustworthy at first glance. You can find the names of these apps in the screenshot added below.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

We reached out to Google, and a rep confirmed that Android users are automatically protected against known versions of this malware by Google Play Protect. However, it is important to note that Google Play Protect may not be enough. Historically, it isn’t 100% foolproof at removing all known malware from Android devices.

ANDROID BANKING TROJAN EVOLVES TO EVADE DETECTION AND STRIKE GLOBALLY

How do these predatory apps work?

The goal of these malicious apps is to gather as much data as possible from infected devices, which they then use to extort users. Victims are often coerced into repaying loans at sky-high interest rates, with some even being threatened for delays. In extreme cases, the app operators have harassed victims’ families and sent death threats, using stolen personal photos as leverage.

These apps request intrusive permissions, giving them access to system data, cameras, call logs, contacts, location, and SMS messages. They justify this data collection by claiming it’s necessary for user verification and anti-fraud measures.

Users signing up for these services are verified through a one-time password (OTP) to confirm their phone number is from the target region. They are also pressured to share additional details like ID documents, bank accounts, and employment information.

ANDROID BANKING TROJAN MASQUERADES AS GOOGLE PLAY TO STEAL YOUR DATA

4 ways to protect yourself from SpyLoan malware

1. Have strong antivirus software: Android has its own built-in malware protection called Play Protect, but the SpyLoan malware proves it’s not enough. Historically, Play Protect hasn’t been 100% foolproof at removing all known malware from Android phones. The best way to protect yourself from clicking malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information is to have antivirus protection installed on all your devices. This can also alert you of any phishing emails or ransomware scams. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

2. Download apps from reliable sources: It’s important to download apps only from trusted sources like the Google Play Store. You might say I am contradicting myself, but the Play Store is still safer than other options out there. They have strict checks to prevent malware and other harmful software. However, even with the security measures provided by Google Play, downloading apps from the store does not guarantee 100% protection against malware or harmful software. Avoid downloading apps from unknown websites or unofficial stores, as they can pose a higher risk to your personal data and device. Never trust download links that you get through SMS.

3. Be cautious with app permissions: Always review the permissions requested by apps before installation. If an app requests access to features that seem unnecessary for its function, it could be a sign of malicious intent. Do not give any app Accessibility permissions unless you really need to. 4. Take loans from legit institutions: Always take loans from legitimate financial institutions like banks or well-known lenders. Avoid sketchy apps or services promising instant cash with minimal requirements. They’re often too good to be true. Legit lenders are transparent about their terms, interest rates, and fees, and they won’t demand access to your personal data or pressure you with scare tactics. If you’re unsure about a lender, check reviews, verify their credentials, or consult a financial advisor before committing.

THE HIDDEN COSTS OF FREE APPS: YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

Kurt’s key takeaway

It can be tempting to use apps that promise instant loans, especially when you need the money. But they’re often just trying to scam you and push you into a never-ending debt cycle. If you need a loan, go to a trusted bank or lender. Protecting yourself from malicious apps like those infected with SpyLoan malware starts with staying informed and cautious. Always scrutinize the apps you download, stick to trusted platforms, and think twice before sharing sensitive information.

High doses of vitamin C could be a new breakthrough in treating cancer.

The University of Iowa Health Care Carver College of Medicine has shared results from a randomized, phase 2 trial testing the impact of adding high-dose vitamin C to intravenous chemotherapy treatments for pancreatic cancer patients.

The researchers found that administering 75 grams of vitamin C three times a week doubled overall survival rates of patients with late-stage metastatic pancreatic cancer from eight months to 16 months.

The study, published in the journal Redox Biology, also found that progression-free survival was extended from four to six months.

Lead researcher Joseph Cullen, MD, University of Iowa professor of surgery and radiation oncology, shared in an interview with Fox News Digital that the “groundbreaking” findings are the result of 20 years of research on vitamin C.

After testing vitamin C in the lab, Iowa researchers found that using vitamin C in much higher doses “worked great” in killing cancer cells.

“Vitamin C, which is inexpensive and well-tolerated, may improve the efficacy of chemotherapy with a good quality of life.”

We found that at these high doses, ascorbate [vitamin C] actually generates hydrogen peroxide,” Cullen said. “And the hydrogen peroxide is what kills the cancer cells.”

The patients who received vitamin C in the phase 2, FDA-approved trial also seemed to “better tolerate the chemotherapy they were given,” according to the researcher.

Therefore, they got more chemotherapy for longer periods of time and larger doses of chemotherapy, which also would kill the tumor cells,” he added.

Intravenous vitamin C could also help combat other kinds of cancer, according to Cullen, who mentioned that his colleagues are looking into treating lung and brain cancer.

Dr. Georgios Georgakis, a surgical oncologist at Stony Brook Medicine in New York, noted that these findings could “potentially be a breakthrough” for cancer patients.

“It seems to be working synergistically with chemotherapy,” Georgakis, who was not involved in the study, said in a separate conversation with Fox News Digital.

Dr. Joshua Strauss, an attending hematologist and medical oncologist at Advanced Care Oncology and Hematology Associates of the Atlantic Medical Group in Morristown, New Jersey, also expressed his support for this method.

“Small clinical trials such as this one have recently provided exciting and consistent signals that vitamin C, which is inexpensive and well-tolerated, may improve the efficacy of chemotherapy with a good quality of life,” the oncologist, who also was not involved in this new research, said in a statement sent to Fox News Digital.

The benefits of vitamin C

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is an “essential dietary nutrient” found in various foods like citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes, broccoli, strawberries, cabbage and spinach, according to Strauss.

Georgakis noted that vitamin C can help with tissue growth and repair, collagen production, wound healing, bone and skin health, and immune support.

In lower doses, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends getting 75mg to 90mg daily.

Once the body has taken in enough vitamin C, any excess is excreted through the kidneys and won’t be absorbed, Cullen pointed out.

But once the dosage is bumped to much higher levels, such as 75 grams, it acts as a pro-oxidant.

“So, it actually makes these reactive oxygen species that kill cancer cells well,” he said.

It would take backing from a pharmaceutical company to support what would be a “multi-million-dollar” phase 3 trial to continue research, according to Cullen.

For now, he suggests that cancer patients interested in exploring IV vitamin C should talk to their oncologist and seek out professionals who can administer it.

Strauss applauded the researchers and the National Cancer Institute for their efforts, noting that he read the results with “cautious optimism.”

“Pancreatic cancer can be extremely difficult to treat, and I am hopeful whenever I read positive results from a phase 2 study,” he went on.  “However, the study has several limitations, and the results should be carefully interpreted.”

Strauss and the study authors acknowledged some of those limitations, including the small sample size of 34 patients and lack of diversity.

“Larger randomized phase 3 trials are needed to confirm the results before this is adopted into widespread clinical use,” Strauss told Fox News Digital.

Georgakis agreed that although the trial did have a “very good outcome,” this is “not the golden bullet for treating cancer.”

“However, this is exactly what we need – incremental, good outcomes in our fight against cancer,” he said.
