As people age, their bodies tend to take on new quirks and ailments that can sometimes be painful.

Those experiencing shoulder pain could have a condition called “frozen shoulder,” which mostly occurs in middle age.

Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, involves stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint, as described by Mayo Clinic. The condition can worsen over time.

5 FOODS THAT ARE BEST FOR BONE HEALTH, NUTRITIONISTS SAY

Symptoms typically begin slowly and develop through three stages: the freezing stage, frozen stage and thawing stage, according to the same source.

Frozen shoulder develops in three stages: freezing, frozen and thawing. (iStock)

The freezing stage, which involves pain in the shoulder and limited movement, can last anywhere from two to nine months, Mayo Clinic states.

The frozen stage can bring some pain relief, but the shoulder can become stiffer. This can last from four to 12 months.

The final thawing stage is when shoulder mobility begins to improve, lasting up to 24 months.

ELLEN DEGENERES HAS OSTEOPOROSIS: HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE PAINFUL BONE CONDITION

Frozen shoulder is an inflammatory condition that creates scar tissue around the shoulder joint capsule, causing pain, according to primary care sports physician Dr. Samantha Stuek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

“This significant increase in pain comes seemingly out of the blue, more at night,” Stuek said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Frozen shoulder is an inflammatory condition that creates scar tissue around the shoulder joint capsule, an expert explained. (iStock)

“And all of a sudden, this progressive decrease in range of motion [gets] to the point where people are coming in saying they can’t lift their arm, they’re having trouble putting their jacket on, they can’t wash their hair and are having pain with any of those motions.”

The average age of onset for frozen shoulder is 55, and the condition is about four times more common in women, according to Stuek.

ASK A DOCTOR: ‘WHY ARE MY HANDS SWELLING AND WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT IT?’

Frozen shoulder can occur if the shoulder sits still for a long period of time, such as after an arm injury or surgery, Mayo Clinic noted.

People with diabetes are also more susceptible, Stuek added, as the excess sugar in the bloodstream can increase the risk of inflammatory conditions.

People with diabetes, thyroid issues and high cholesterol could be at a higher risk of frozen shoulder. (iStock)

Those with thyroid conditions or high cholesterol — or those who have had cancer around the shoulder area or the breast — are also at a higher risk.

Tips to relieve frozen shoulder

Throughout the gradual stages of frozen shoulder, Stuek recommends moving the body and seeking physical therapy to alleviate symptoms.

“One of my favorite exercises is called pendulum swings, which is where you’re standing upright, leaning over to that side and moving your arm in little circles,” she said, adding that it’s most effective during a warm shower in the morning after waking up.

The expert also suggests taking ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory medication for pain relief.

Some doctors may also prescribe a low-dose steroid or cortisone injections to gain more movement.

If frozen shoulder is suspected, Stuek recommends seeing a professional for an official diagnosis.

Decreased motion could also be caused by arthritis, she noted, which can be confirmed by an X-ray.

“Oftentimes, people have injuries to their rotator cuff, and that can also mimic [frozen shoulder] because they’re not moving it, and it’s also really painful,” Stuek said.

For those who have been diagnosed with frozen shoulder, the doctor encourages them to be patient, as healing “does take time.”

Flight passengers are making ‘the gate escape’ in attempt to avoid ‘poor airport experiences’

0

As travelers book holiday vacations for 2025, a new report reveals an emerging trend when it comes to airport travel.

Booking.com has released its annual travel prediction list for 2025, and one trend, “the gate escape,” has people embracing enjoyable airport experiences.

Booking.com’s website says “2025 is set to be the year that the airport takes its place in the limelight as travelers actively seek out destinations with the best airports. … This trend marks a shift towards people working to make the most of their holiday from the moment they leave their homes.”

Ben Harrell, U.S. managing director at Booking.com, told Fox News Digital via email that passengers arriving at the airport early is not just practical, but a part of the journey.

“These spaces are becoming gateways of relaxation and entertainment. There’s an argument about whether life is about the journey or the destination, but in travel, it’s increasingly about both,” Harrell said.

Twenty-seven percent of Americans are now factoring in specific airports when choosing a destination, with 52% feeling more excited and less stressed when airports have unique experiences, according to Booking.com.

“For many travelers, especially Gen Z and millennials, it’s no longer about rushing through security; it’s about embracing experiences,” said Harrell.

Other catchy labels or new terms for travel trends have made headlines in recent months.

In October, Fox News Digital reported that American Airlines announced it was testing new technology to halt a travel phenomenon known as “gate lice,” which is when passengers cut lines in hopes of boarding a flight early.

The system audibly flags when a passenger attempts to board the plane before a designated assignment is called.

New Apple feature will allow travelers to alert Delta, United, other major airlines of lost luggage

Apple has released a new feature that could make tracking down lost luggage a lot easier for travelers.

The iOS update will allow users to share the location of an AirTag or Find My network with third parties, and airlines will be able to utilize the feature to connect people with their missing bags.

“The Find My network and AirTag have proven to be a powerful combination for users while traveling, providing invaluable location information when bags have been misplaced or mishandled,” Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, said in a press release.

Cue added, “With Share Item Location, we’re excited to give users a new way to easily share this information directly with third parties like airlines, all while protecting their privacy.”

iPhone, iPad or Mac users can generate a “Share Item Location” link in the Find My app which will allow recipients to view a website showing the item on an interactive map with time stamp updates when a new location is made available.

The link will be accessible to a limited number of people and receipts will be required to authenticate through an Apple Account or partner email address prior to viewing the tracking site.

A United Airlines spokesperson told Fox News Digital in a statement that more details will be shared over time.

“In coming months, United will begin accepting Find My item locations as part of our customer service process for locating mishandled or delayed bags,” said the spokesperson.

David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer, said in a press release that the airline plans to introduce the service system-wide in early 2025.

“We know many of our customers are already traveling with AirTag in their checked bags, and this feature will soon make it easier for them to share location information with us safely and securely, helping our customer service agents work more efficiently and giving our customers added peace of mind,” said Kinzelman.

When it comes to healthy eating, veggies are always a good choice — but one takes the cake for being the healthiest.

Watercress is the most nutrient-dense vegetable, receiving a perfect score of 100 in the CDC’s long-standing ranking of “powerhouse” fruits and vegetables (PFVs).

Chinese cabbage is a close second with a score of 91.99, followed by chard (89.27), beet greens (87.08) and spinach (86.43).

THESE 6 ‘HEALTHY’ FOODS WON’T HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT, NUTRITIONIST WARNS

These foods, among a total of 41 that qualified as PFVs, were found to contain 17 nutrients, including potassium, fiber, protein, calcium, iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, zinc, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E and K.

Cruciferous items, including watercress, Chinese cabbage, collard greens, kale and arugula — as well as leafy greens, like chard, beet greens, spinach, chicory and leaf lettuce — took the top spots on the list.

Yellow and orange foods, like carrots, tomatoes, winter squash and sweet potatoes — along with allium, citrus and berry croups — landed in the bottom half.

2 SURPRISING FOODS FOR FALL THAT ARE DELICIOUS, HEALTHY AND EASY TO PREPARE

When it comes to the top veggie, watercress, nutritionists agree that it has a multitude of health benefits.

1. Rich in nutrients and low in calories

Watercress has “remarkable levels” of vitamins K, A, C and B, as well as magnesium, calcium and potassium, according to Serena Poon, certified nutritionist and celebrity longevity advisor in Los Angeles.

Vitamin K, calcium and magnesium are great for bone health, Poon told Fox News Digital, while vitamin C supports immune health, collagen production and skin radiance.

Watercress has “remarkable levels” of vitamins K, A, C and B, as well as magnesium, calcium and potassium, according to a nutrition expert. (iStock)

“Watercress may be tiny, but it’s one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can find,” Poon said.

“Plus, since it’s low in calories, you get all these benefits without adding much to your daily caloric intake.”

Los Angeles-based registered dietitian nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein agreed, telling Fox News Digital that consumers can get more than 50% of their daily value of vitamins C, A and K in three cups of watercress.

2. Supports heart health

Watercress is rich in antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress – two “key contributors” to heart disease, Poon noted.

The vegetable also contains compounds like beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, which support heart health and improve blood vessel function.

“Greens are numero uno when it comes to healthy food.”

“Additionally, the nitrates in watercress are known to lower blood pressure, further protecting your cardiovascular system,” Poon added.

“Adding watercress to your meals could be a simple yet powerful way to give your heart some extra support.”

All dark greens and cruciferous veggies contain “powerful levels of antioxidants, but typically get overshadowed by other things like berries,” according to Muhlstein.

“Greens are numero uno when it comes to healthy food,” she said.

3. Could reduce cancer risk

As powerhouse vegetables are strongly associated with reduced chronic disease risk, watercress could also reduce cancer risk, according to Poon.

ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS MAKE UP 60% OF AMERICA’S DIET, WHO’S AT BIGGEST RISK

“Watercress contains powerful phytochemicals, including glucosinolates, which have been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth,” she said.

“When you chew watercress, these glucosinolates are converted into isothiocyanates, compounds that have been studied for their anti-cancer properties.”

Previous research has suggested that watercress may help prevent DNA damage and reduce the risk of certain cancers, particularly those affecting the lungs and digestive tract, Poon added.

4. Encourages hormone balance

Nutrient-rich watercress can also support hormone health through its high levels of B vitamins, calcium and magnesium.

These nutrients “play roles in neurotransmitter balance, stress response and metabolic function, which are all vital for maintaining hormonal equilibrium,” Poon told Fox News Digital.

5. Aids in detoxification and liver health

The natural compounds in watercress, like sulfur, can enhance the body’s natural detoxification process and support liver function, according to Poon.

“This leafy green can help support the liver’s ability to filter toxins and promote the elimination of waste products, making it a great addition to any detox-supportive diet,” she said.

6. Supports skin health

Watercress can also give the skin a natural glow, Poon noted, as antioxidants like vitamin C, beta-carotene and lutein support skin elasticity and radiance.

“Vitamin C, in particular, is essential for collagen production, which helps maintain skin firmness and can reduce the appearance of fine lines,” she added.

Best American cities for Thanksgiving 2024 celebrations include Atlanta, San Diego and more

0

Thanksgiving 2024 is nearing, and millions of Americans are likely planning where they will celebrate the holiday.

Whether it’s down the road with friends or via airplane to travel with family, turkeys will be carved this year on Nov. 28.

In honor of the upcoming occasion, WalletHub released a report detailing the destinations that are the best for celebrating the day of gratitude.

3 FLORIDA CITIES AMONG BEST IN US FOR FOOD LOVERS, NEW STUDY REVEALS

The Miami-based company compared 100 of the most populated U.S. cities across five key dimensions: Thanksgiving celebrations and traditions, affordability, safety and accessibility, giving thanks and Thanksgiving weather forecast.

With many people traveling to see loved ones or for a festive Thanksgiving getaway, WalletHub said these cities were the best for their various offerings.  (iStock)

Within those, other categories included pumpkin patches per capita, holiday decoration shops per capita, cost of Thanksgiving dinner, crime rate, traffic congestion, volunteer opportunities per capita, Thanksgiving weather predictions and more.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said the top ranked states show their enthusiasm for the food-filled holiday.

TOP 10 US CITIES FOR COFFEE LOVERS REVEALED

“The best cities for celebrating Thanksgiving all have an abundance of high-quality restaurants and places to buy festive decorations, and their residents get very excited for the holiday based on their Google search history,” he said in a press release.

Pulling data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, AmeriCorps and others, WalletHub revealed the top 10 cities to spend the Thanksgiving holiday.

With an extremely high number of restaurants rated at least 4.5 stars and an abundance of pumpkin patches and holiday decoration shops, San Diego ranked high on the list.

Lupo told Fox News Digital that San Diego has strong “traditions, favorable weather and an abundance of festive attractions such as high-rated restaurants and holiday decoration stores.”

The Southern California city also has a 1% chance of precipitation forecasted on Thanksgiving, according to WalletHub’s report.

San Francisco was praised for having one of the lowest prices for a three-star hotel room available on Thanksgiving at just $60 — making it the second cheapest in the country.

Lupo said Lexington, Kentucky, and San Antonio, Texas, improved their standings in 2024 thanks to a large number of Thanksgiving activities and an emphasis on affordability.

Cities near the bottom of the list included Anchorage, Alaska; New Orleans, Louisiana; San Bernardino, California; Hialeah, Florida; and Stockton, California, which came in last place.

“Stockton, California, ranks last primarily because of high costs of dining and accommodations, limited celebratory venues and a lack of volunteer opportunities,” Lupo said.

Trump expected to end Biden-era death penalty pause, expand to more inmates

0

President-elect Donald Trump put federal death row inmates on notice this campaign season, when he warned he would undo a moratorium on executions slapped in place under the outgoing Biden-Harris administration.

“President-elect Trump has not shied away from using the death penalty,” said Matt Mangino, a former district attorney for Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and an expert on capital punishment. “He presided over 13 executions in the final year of his first term.”

However, the incoming president also says he wants to expand capital punishment for other crimes, putting execution on the table for child rapists, human traffickers and illegal immigrants who kill Americans or police officers.

That would require support from Congress and the Supreme Court.

Some of those ideas face hurdles. In 2008, the Supreme Court declared the death penalty for child rapists unconstitutional when the child survives, the American Bar Journal reported Monday.

However, with Trump in the White House, a Republican majority in the Senate and conservatives holding a 6-3 advantage in the current Supreme Court, proponents are hopeful for a reversal.

WATCH: Trump says the only way to stop drugs is the death penalty for dealers

“The Supreme Court has said the death penalty should only apply when the death of the victim is involved, but that is subject to change with the makeup of the current Supreme Court,” Mangino told Fox News Digital.

Three of the four justices who dissented in the 2008 Kennedy v. Louisiana decision are still on the court – Justices John Roberts, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

It would also be a groundbreaking move to impose the death penalty on people convicted of drug or human trafficking, Mangino said.

“The death penalty for drug and human trafficking would be unprecedented in the western world,” he said.

Rodrigo Duterte, the former president of the Philippines, prompted an international outcry after a violent war on drugs in his Southeast Asian country, he noted.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has vowed to fight efforts to expand the death penalty.

In July, the organization noted that in the 1980s, Trump paid for a full-page ad calling for the execution of the “Central Park Five” – who were convicted of rape and assault for an attack in the park. New York state had no law authorizing the death penalty for rape cases at the time and banned capital punishment altogether in 2004.

More than a decade after their wrongful convictions, all five were exonerated by DNA evidence. One of them, Yusef Salaam, is currently a New York City councilman.

There are currently 40 federal inmates on death row, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, and the list includes surviving Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Dylann Roof, who massacred nine parishioners in a South Carolina church.

Justice Department records show the federal government has executed 16 people since 2001, with the deaths of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and, eight days later, the American drug trafficker Juan Raul Garza, who had two men killed and executed a third himself.

Timothy McVeigh in a mugshot

Thirteen of those executions came during Trump’s first term in office.

The individual states executed 1,542 condemned inmates between 1977 and 2022, according to federal data. Texas led the way with 587 executions, more than the next two states combined – Oklahoma with 119 and Virginia with 113.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

In almost that same time period – between 1973 and 2023 – 192 death row inmates were exonerated and set free, according to the ACLU.

The individual states have their own system for capital punishment – or lack thereof – and would not be as impacted by Trump administration policy.

“Trump will have a GOP Senate and most likely a GOP House,” Mangino said. “He can do a lot with the death penalty and only the Supreme Court can put on the brakes – and how likely is that?”

Alarming rise of fake legal requests: What it means for your privacy

0

Phishing emails are one of the most common tricks scammers use, but they’re usually easy to catch if you pay attention. Awkward grammar, random details and, most importantly, an unofficial email address are dead giveaways. For example, you might get an email saying your Apple ID’s been disabled, but the sender’s email won’t actually be from Apple. Now, though, scammers are finding ways to get around this.

According to the FBI, there’s been a recent rise in cybercriminal services using hacked police and government email accounts to send fake subpoenas and data requests to U.S.-based tech companies.

Alarming rise of fake legal requests: What it means for your privacy

What you need to know

The FBI has seen a spike in criminal forum posts about emergency data requests and stolen email credentials from police departments and government agencies. Cybercriminals are getting into compromised U.S. and foreign government email accounts and using them to send fake emergency data requests to U.S.-based companies, which exposes customer data for further misuse in other crimes.

In August 2024, a popular cybercriminal on an online forum advertised “high-quality .gov emails” for sale, meant for espionage, social engineering, data extortion, emergency data requests and more. The listing even included U.S. credentials, and the seller claimed they could guide buyers on making emergency data requests and even sell real stolen subpoena documents to help them pose as law enforcement.

Another cybercriminal boasted about owning government emails from over 25 countries. They claimed anyone can use these emails to send a subpoena to a tech company and get access to usernames, emails, phone numbers and other personal client info. Some con artists are even hosting a “masterclass” on how to create and submit their own emergency data requests to pull data on any social media account, charging $100 for the full rundown.

WINDOWS FLAW LETS HACKERS SNEAK INTO YOUR PC OVER WI-FI

How this phishing scam works

When law enforcement, whether federal, state or local, wants information about someone’s account at a tech company, like their email address or other account details, they typically need a warrant, subpoena or court order. When a tech company receives one of these requests from an official email address, they’re required to comply. So, if a scammer gets access to a government email, they can fake a subpoena and get information on just about anyone.

To bypass verification, scammers often send emergency data requests, claiming that someone’s life is at risk and that the data is needed urgently. Because companies don’t want to delay in case of an actual emergency, they may hand over the information, even if the request turns out to be fake. By portraying it as a life-or-death situation, scammers make it harder for companies to take time to verify the request.

For example, the FBI reported that earlier this year, a known cybercriminal posted pictures on an online forum of a fake emergency data request they’d sent to PayPal. The scammer tried to make it look legitimate by using a fraudulent mutual legal assistance treaty, claiming it was part of a local investigation into child trafficking, complete with a case number and legal code for verification. However, PayPal recognized that it wasn’t a real law enforcement request and denied it.

What can companies do to avoid falling for these phishing scams?

1) Verify all data requests: Before sharing sensitive information, companies should verify every data request, even those that look legitimate. Establish a protocol for confirming requests directly with the agency or organization that supposedly sent them.

2) Strengthen email security: Use email authentication protocols like DMARC, SPF and DKIM to block emails from unauthorized sources. Implement anti-phishing filters to detect suspicious content in messages.

3) Train employees on phishing awareness: Regular training sessions on phishing scams can help employees recognize red flags, such as urgent language, unusual requests or emails from unknown addresses. Employees should be encouraged to report suspicious emails.

4) Limit access to sensitive data: Restrict who can view or share sensitive customer data. Fewer people with access means fewer chances for accidental or intentional data leaks.

5) Implement emergency verification procedures: Have a clear verification process in place for “emergency” data requests, including steps for double-checking with higher management or legal teams before responding to any urgent request for customer information.

Is there something you need to do?

This particular phishing scam mostly targets big tech companies, so there’s not much you can do directly. However, it’s a reminder that you shouldn’t automatically trust an email, even if it comes from a .gov address. Here are some steps you can take to stay safe.

1) Double-check email addresses and links: Even if an email looks official, take a moment to check the sender’s email address and hover over any links to see where they actually lead. Be cautious if anything looks off. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

2) Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Use 2FA for all sensitive accounts. This extra layer of security helps protect you even if your login credentials are compromised.

3) Stay updated on phishing scams: Keep an eye on the latest phishing tactics, so you know what to look out for. Regular updates help you spot new types of scams before they affect you.

4) Verify suspicious requests: If you get an unexpected email asking for sensitive info, contact the sender directly through an official channel to confirm the request.

DON’T LET SNOOPS NEARBY LISTEN TO YOUR VOICEMAIL WITH THIS QUICK TIP

Kurt’s key takeaway

Scammers are taking phishing emails to a whole new level. I often recommend checking the email carefully when you receive anything suspicious to see if it’s legit. But now, since scammers can even access government emails, you need to be extra cautious. This phishing scam seems to target mostly big tech companies, so it’s on them to strengthen their security and verify every request thoroughly before sharing any user information. It’s also up to governments worldwide to protect their digital assets from being compromised.

The need for new spacesuits

NASA has been using the same extravehicular activity suits since 1982, and there have been no new designs for lunar missions since the Apollo program ended in 1972. To address this gap, NASA awarded Axiom Space a contract worth $228 million in 2022 to develop a modern version of the Apollo suit, leading to the creation of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) suit.
