Potential health benefits and safety tips for using the essential oil vetiver

0

Essential oils such as vetiver are used in aromatherapy for the potential health benefits they could offer.

“The practice of aromatherapy uses natural plant extracts, such as essential oils, hydrosols and carrier oils, in a variety of ways to heal the body, mind and spirit,” according to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA).

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways, such as with an oil diffuser or applied topically to the skin when combined with a carrier oil.

Popular essential oils include eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint and tea tree.

Vetiver is another essential oil that is used for its potential health benefits, an expert told Fox News Digital.

With vetiver, and any other essential oil, it’s important to follow proper safety precautions with their use.

Below is how to use vetiver oil, potential health benefits that could come with its use and safety tips to keep in mind.

  1. What is vetiver?
  2. What are the potential health benefits associated with using vetiver?
  3. How to practice safety with vetiver

1. What is vetiver?

Vetiver is a plant whose oil can be used in aromatherapy, also known as essential oil therapy.

SAUNAS HAVE HEALTH BENEFITS, BUT OVERUSE IS LINKED TO DANGEROUS HEALTH RISKS

“The roots are actually the part that gets extracted for making essential oil,” Jenna Volpe, a Texas-based registered dietitian and herbalist, told Fox News Digital in a phone interview.

“I would say it’s a grass that’s kind of similar to a lemon grass or a citronella,” Volpe added.

Typically, vetiver is sold and used as an essential oil.

2. What are the potential health benefits associated with using vetiver?

Generally, essential oils have been used for their antimicrobial activities, as well as antiviral, nematicidal, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidant properties, according to MedicalNewsToday.

JASMINE HERBS’ SURPRISING BENEFITS WHEN ADDED TO HEALTH ROUTINES IN THE FORM OF OIL, IN TEA AND MORE

The use of essential oil in holistic practice works through both the sense of smell and absorption into the skin, according to Healthline.

The use of essential oils has long been believed to come along with different health benefits, such as improved sleep and reduced stress and anxiety.

The potential health benefits of vetiver mirror the possible health benefits associated with other types of aromatic herbs, Volpe told Fox News Digital.

“It has antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory potential, potential antimicrobial activity, and, again, it has to do with antioxidants, primarily in aromatherapy,” Volpe said.

3. Safety with vetiver

There are several different ways to use vetiver oil.

One way to use vetiver oil is by inhaling the scent when it is released into the air with an oil diffuser.

Oil diffuser

One way essential oils are used is by adding a couple of drops into an oil diffuser. (iStock)

It is also often mixed with other essential oils to create an aromatic blend.

When using an oil diffuser, it’s important to be mindful of those around you, especially small children and pets.

“There may be potential side effects, as far as with pets,” according to Volpe.

Additionally, Volpe said it’s important to be extra cautious when applying vetiver topically. Carrier oil should be combined with vetiver; she recommended that it not be taken internally.

“They’re definitely the most potent, so even just one or two drops goes such a long way.”

“I would say just be careful with how much you apply topically … This is for any essential oil in general, and definitely don’t take it internally as an essential oil because it could potentially cause liver damage,” said Volpe.

“Essential oils are really highly concentrated herbs, and they’re definitely the most potent, so even just one or two drops goes such a long way,” Volpe said.

“I definitely would not recommend applying it topically without a carrier oil,” Volpe added, noting that jojoba oil and coconut oil are both good carrier oils to use.

If applying vetiver topically to the skin, it should be used with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, Jenna Volpe, a Texas-based registered dietitian and herbalist, told Fox News Digital.  (iStock)

When applying vetiver with a carrier oil or any new product to your skin, it’s a good idea to do a patch test first to make sure you don’t have a reaction to the product.

With vetiver oil specifically, those with sensitive skin could potentially find themselves with irritation after applying it topically.

“If someone were to put it on topically, even with a carrier oil, some people can get skin irritation if they have sensitive skin,” Volpe said.

Strokes are the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States, and the leading cause of disability — but up to 80% of them are preventable.

That’s according to the American Stroke Association (ASA), which on Monday published its updated guidelines for stroke prevention in the journal Stroke.

This was the first update since its 2014 set of guidelines.

STROKE SIGNS, SYMPTOMS, RECOVERY AND PREVENTATIVE MEASURES: LIFE CHANGES A SURVIVOR MAY FACE

“The key to preventing stroke is to understand what the risk factors are and have access to care to address the ones that may require medications, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes,” study author Cheryl Bushnell, professor of neurology and stroke division chief in the Department of Neurology at Wake Forest University Health Sciences in Winston-Salem, told Fox News Digital.

Strokes are the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States, and the leading cause of disability — but up to 80% of them are preventable. (iStock)

“Other prevention approaches are lifestyle changes, such as weight loss, being physically active, avoiding sitting all day during waking hours, eating a healthy diet (such as the Mediterranean diet), treating sleep apnea (which prevents optimal sleep at night) and smoking cessation.”

Dr. Bradley Serwer, a Maryland-based cardiologist and chief medical officer at VitalSolution, an Ingenovis Health company that offers cardiovascular and anesthesiology services to hospitals nationwide, commented on the updates to Fox News Digital.

PEOPLE WITH BRAIN ANEURYSMS AT HIGHER RISK OF SOME MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS, STUDY FINDS

“These guidelines have several unique takeaway points, but focus on primary prevention with established strategies focused on better diet, exercise, avoiding tobacco, improving sleep quality and treating known risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia,” he said.

Bushnell recapped the main changes in what she calls an “important and timely update.”

New medications

Since the last set of guidelines, there have been “groundbreaking clinical trials” into new medications that not only treat the target disease — such as diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol — but also reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease, according to Bushnell.

Life's Essential 8

Stroke prevention practices are closely tied to Life’s Essential 8, the American Heart Association’s eight elements that are deemed essential for cardiovascular health.  (American Heart Association)

“For example, the glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) receptor agonists have been shown to not only drastically reduce blood sugars in patients with diabetes, but they also lead to significant weight loss in these patients, which has many downstream benefits,” she told Fox News Digital.

“Together, this reduces the risk of stroke and other complications of diabetes.”

“Like coronary artery disease and heart attacks, strokes are largely preventable if we start early.”

Also recommended are the PCSK9 inhibitors, a class of drugs that Bushnell said are very effective at lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol.

“These medications have also been shown to reduce the risk of stroke,” she added.

Physical activity

For stroke prevention, the ASA has historically recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity, 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity or a combination of both.

The new set of guidelines emphasizes the importance of not only being physically active, but also avoiding sedentary behavior during waking hours, according to Bushnell.

“We provide a new recommendation for screening for sedentary behavior and counseling patients to avoid being sedentary,” she said.

Tailored guidance for women, other groups

The ASA’s update also includes specific recommendations for certain groups.

For pregnant women, there is guidance for lowering high blood pressure and screening for pregnancy complications, according to Bushnell.

For all women, the ASA also calls for screening for premature ovarian failure (very early menopause before age 40), early-onset menopause (before age 45), and endometriosis (an inflammatory condition caused by endometrial tissue found outside the uterus).

The ASA’s new guidelines include a greater emphasis on screening for women’s health issues. (iStock)

“We also recommend screening for adverse social determinants of health (SDOH), which is new from the prior guidelines,” Bushnell said.

“There is abundant evidence that adverse SDOH can be barriers to prevention — inability to afford health insurance and medications, access to health care, etc. — and therefore increase stroke risk.”

Overall, Bushnell said, the guidelines offer “relatively simple strategies” that could effectively lower the risk of stroke.

“The main additional point is that all our recommendations will not only lead to better stroke prevention, but also improve brain health,” she said.

The updated guidelines reflect “significant research and clinical lessons” learned over the past 10 years, a cardiologist said. (iStock)

“The risks for dementia are essentially the same as the risks for stroke.”

Overall, Serwer added, the updated guidelines reflect “significant research and clinical lessons” learned over the past 10 years.

One of the boards contains gears of various sizes and colors, giving visitors the opportunity to create their own patterns. (See the video at the top of this article.)

The other board is used as a ball track, with different tubes that navigate the ball up and down the board.

“When I saw my chance to give future generations a platform to build [STEAM] skills, I lunged at the opportunity,” said Flinn Opel to Fox News Digital — referencing to science, technology, engineering, art and math.  (Flinn Opel, Above & Beyond Children’s Museum)

Opel told Fox News Digital via email that STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) have played an important role in his own life through education.

“These skills are important to succeeding in today’s world and I am beyond thankful for all the teachers that have nurtured them,” he said.

LeBron James calls out ‘lame’ Browns fans who booed Deshaun Watson following injury

0

LeBron James was not happy with the Cleveland Browns fans for booing quarterback Deshaun Watson after he got hurt in Sunday’s game.

Watson went to run with the ball after taking the snap, and with his first step he crumpled the ground in pain. As Watson remained down on the field, the Browns’ faithful booed him, much to the dismay of James.

“Cleveland Fans! Y’all know how much we’ve been thru throughout the years both good, bad, and indifferent. With that being said booing anyone that’s down with an injury let alone your own player is LAME AF!! To the ones who didn’t (salute emoji),” James posted on X.

An MRI on Monday confirmed that Watson ruptured his Achilles on the play and that he will miss the remainder of the season, via multiple reports.

James wasn’t the only person to express his displeasure with the boos, as Browns’ players Myles Garrett and Jameis Winston also came to the defense of Watson

James knows the Cleveland sports fans well, as he spent 11 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers over two separate stints with the team. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar grew up in Akron, Ohio, and has supported the Browns.

Second-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson entered the game for Watson, with Winston serving as the emergency quarterback in the Browns’ 21-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals

Watson is in his third season with the Browns after signing a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract prior to the 2022 season. Over those three seasons, Watson has played a combined 19 games for the Browns while being mired in off-field controversies.

Watson was suspended for 11 games two seasons ago after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during scheduled massage sessions.

In September, Watson received another lawsuit against him for sexual assault and battery in Houston.

On the field, Watson struggled this season. The former Clemson quarterback completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,148 yards while throwing five touchdowns and three interceptions across seven starts. The Browns are 1-6 this season.

The Browns will hope to turn around their season without Watson when they take on the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8.

California Energy Commission Supports Innovative Solution for EV Charging in Multifamily Properties 33

Landlords can promote EV adoption and contribute to reducing carbon emissions by providing tenants with convenient access to charging stations.

Palo Alto, California, October 21, 2024, As electric vehicles (EVs) gain popularity, apartment dwellers face a significant hurdle: the lack of convenient and affordable charging options. While single-family homeowners can easily install home chargers for a relatively low cost, many residents of apartments and condos find themselves without access to this essential infrastructure, limiting their ability to adopt EVs.

In fact, about 80% of EV owners live in single-family homes, highlighting the disparity in charging accessibility. The challenge lies in the costly installation of charging stations in multifamily buildings, compounded by insufficient power supply to support multiple vehicles. This lack of infrastructure not only discourages potential EV buyers but also hinders the broader transition to sustainable transportation.

California is particularly concerned about the EV adoption problem and its impact on achieving the state’s clean energy goals. As such, it created the REACH 2.0 program (Reliable, Equitable, and Accessible Charging for Multi-family Housing 2.0) to bring affordable and accessible EV charging to low-income communities in the state. As a statement of confidence in its ability to address this need, the CEC awarded GoPowerEV $6.2M to address the problem.

Selected from a competitive field of 30 proposals, GoPowerEV’s project was recognized for its potential to significantly advance California’s clean energy goals. This $6.2M grant immediately funds GoPowerEV’s installation of EV charging solutions to approximately 50 communities across California. GoPowerEV’s innovative solution addresses three critical challenges in California: increasing adoption of EVs in low-income communities, reducing the cost and management burden of EV charging for property owners, and reducing the load on the grid in peak times.

“Increasing EV adoption and meeting climate goals relies on making EV charging convenient and affordable in low-income communities,” says John Reister, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GoPowerEV. “With the CEC’s support, we are ready to scale our operations to more communities, helping the state meet their EV adoption and sustainability goals without driving up costs.”

Amidst increasing capital costs for traditional high powered EV chargers and the lack of capacity in older buildings, GoPowerEV offers a more affordable alternative that is installed without the need for expensive electricity upgrades.

GoPowerEV offers a software-managed solution for EV charging for multifamily properties. This includes a dual smart outlet capable of L1 and L2 charging, load management software that shares the power when the system is oversubscribed and a resident app that incentivizes tenants to charge overnight over longer durations. Altogether, the solution enables tens to hundreds of spaces to deliver EV charging without the need for expensive upgrades.

“We are very excited to work with GoPowerEV on providing EV charging in our communities,” says Aurianna Melson, Asset Manager for the West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (WHCHC), “Without the CEC grant and the partnership with GoPowerEV we would not have been able to provide EV charging in our communities.” WHCHC is a nonprofit that builds and renovates high-quality apartment buildings that provide housing and services to lower and fixed-income people using environmentally sustainable materials to protect the environment. WHCHC operates 22 buildings in Southern California and is building an additional four.

Can you be tracked when using a VPN?

0

A virtual private network, otherwise known as a VPN, is a tool for browsing the internet privately. Users might choose to do this for security reasons or to access certain websites that might not be available in their current location.

Some VPN users might want to know whether or not they can be tracked when using a VPN. This may be because they are concerned about their privacy and want to ensure that their online activities remain confidential. Others might worry about potential legal issues or want to avoid targeted advertising. In any case, understanding the capabilities and limitations of a VPN can help you make informed decisions about your online security and privacy.

Can you be tracked when using a VPN?

A virtual private network encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server. (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

What is a VPN used for?

A VPN work by encrypting the connection between your device and the VPN server, ensuring that no one can access your data as it travels between the two computers. This simple setup has important consequences for online privacy and security. Because of this capability, VPNs are useful for many things and, when used properly, can protect you from being tracked in several ways:

1) Websites can’t track you using your real IP address. Your IP address is a unique number assigned to your device by your internet service provider (ISP) whenever you connect to the internet. It acts as your “online address,” and websites can use it to identify your location and track your activity. However, a VPN masks your real IP address, showing websites the VPN server’s IP address instead.

2) Your internet service provider can’t track what you do on the internet. Since the VPN encrypts your internet traffic, your ISP can’t see the details of your browsing activity, only that you’re connected to a VPN.

3) Your government can’t track what you do on the internet via your internet service provider. By using a VPN, your browsing activity is shielded from being monitored by government agencies through your ISP.

4) P2P peers can’t track you by your IP address. When engaging in peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, others on the network can usually see your IP address. With a VPN, your real IP address remains hidden, protecting your identity and location.

Can you be tracked when using a VPN?

VPNs are internet privacy tools. (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

CAN YOU BYPASS VPN BLOCKS AND PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY?

Why would someone not want to be tracked?

People may not want to be tracked and would, therefore, use a VPN for several reasons:

Privacy concerns: Many users want to maintain their privacy online and prevent organizations, including websites, ISPs and governments, from monitoring their activities.

Prevent government surveillance: To elaborate on governments, in some regions, governments monitor online activities, which can lead to concerns about freedom and personal security.

Bypass censorship: To go off of the above, users in countries with heavy internet censorship use VPNs to access restricted content without being monitored.

Avoid targeted advertising: Tracking often leads to targeted ads based on browsing history, which many find invasive.

General security: People may want to go the extra mile to protect their sensitive information from being accessed by malicious entities.

Can you be tracked when using a VPN?

Some users may want to avoid targeted advertising using a VPN. (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

Can you be tracked with a VPN?

Using a VPN prevents the most simple and intrusive ways of being tracked by hiding your real IP address. However, there are specific situations where VPNs might not provide complete anonymity:

  • Website tracking: Websites can track users using cookies, fingerprinting, HTTP E-Tags, web storage and browser history sniffing, which VPNs can’t prevent. Cookies, in particular, are small pieces of data stored on your device that can track your behavior across sessions. However, you can continue visiting a website without accepting their cookies, limiting the amount of tracking. Always review the website’s GDPR statement and privacy policies before accepting cookies to better understand how your data might be used.
  • VPN provider tracking: Your VPN provider knows your real IP address, resolves your DNS queries and can see which websites you visit. Choosing a reputable VPN service that doesn’t keep logs is essential to avoid unintentional tracking.
  • Targeted attacks: VPNs can’t always protect against targeted attacks from sophisticated entities, like government agencies using advanced surveillance techniques.

Some online shoppers prefer to use a VPN. (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

WILL A VPN PREVENT APPS FROM TRACKING ME?

How to ensure you’re not tracked with your VPN

Whether you’re looking to not be tracked or you want to use a VPN for another reason, you’ll want to make sure your VPN provider has your best interests in mind. To maximize your privacy while using a VPN:

1) Use trusted VPN providers: Choose VPN services with strong privacy policies and no-log practices, preferably audited by external firms.

2) Avoid logging into services: When using a VPN, avoid logging into services that can link your activity back to you.

3) Use secure browsers: Opt for browsers that respect privacy and have built-in features to reduce tracking.

4) Update personal security: Regularly update software and use strong, unique passwords to enhance overall security. Also, consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the chances of being tracked online, even when using a VPN.

For the best VPN software, see my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

Kurt’s key takeaways

Using a VPN can significantly enhance your online privacy and security by encrypting your data and hiding your real IP address. This can help you avoid tracking by websites, ISPs, governments and even P2P peers. However, it’s important to remember that VPNs are not a silver bullet for online anonymity. Website tracking techniques, VPN provider logs and targeted attacks can still compromise your privacy. To maximize your privacy, choose a trusted VPN provider with a strong no-log policy, avoid logging into services that can link back to you, use secure browsers and keep your software and passwords up to date. By taking these additional steps, you can better protect your online activities from prying eyes.

Easy ways to incorporate tarragon into your diet

0

Tarragon is a herb generally used for culinary purposes but can also be used in herbal remedies.

There are several potential health benefits that could come from incorporating tarragon into your diet, such as aiding digestion and balancing the immune system, Jenna Volpe, a Texas-based registered dietitian and herbalist, told Fox News Digital in a phone call.

The herb makes for an easy addition to your diet with a large array of dishes it could be incorporated into, including a chicken or fish meal. It can also be used as an ingredient in dressing and can even be incorporated into an herbal tea.

JASMINE HERBS’ SURPRISING BENEFITS WHEN ADDED TO HEALTH ROUTINES IN THE FORM OF OIL, IN TEA AND MORE

Learn more about the potential health benefits of tarragon below.

  1. Could help stimulate digestion
  2. Can help with immune system balance
  3. Can be used against fungal infection

1. Could help stimulate digestion

Adding tarragon to your food can help to stimulate digestion in the body.

“Most of the benefits are anti-inflammatory,” Volpe said of tarragon.

“I would say it stimulates digestion because it’s bitter, and it’s aromatic, and so it has a lot of those essential oils,” Volpe said.

“Anything bitter tends to stimulate digestive secretion.”

2. Can help with immune system balance

Tarragon can also stimulate immune balancing activity, which is called “immunomodulating activity,” according to Volpe.

In 2017, a study done on mice was published that tested tarragon’s potential connection to immune system balance.

In the study, mice were given tarragon extract for 21 consecutive days.

The conclusion was that tarragon could be used to adjust the immune system because of its ability to “inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and induce anti-inflammatory macrophages,” according to the study published in Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine.

3. Can be used against fungal infection

There are millions of types of fungi, but only a few hundred of those cause sickness in humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The fungi range in severity for humans.

How it works

The NoviOcean platform harnesses three different energy sources:

Solar Power: 7,535 square feet of solar panels generate up to 50 kW.

Wind Power: Six vertical-axis wind turbines capture wind energy efficiently.

Wave Power: A fascinating buoyancy-driven mechanism generates up to 650 kW from wave motion.

SAY GOODBYE TO DEAD BATTERIES WITH THIS PORTABLE WIND TURBINE

The wave power secret

The platform’s wave energy generator uses a clever piston system. As waves rise and fall, the platform traps air underwater, creating enormous buoyancy force. This force drives water through a turbine, generating electricity.

Promising performance

NoviOcean claims each full-size platform could generate about 3.5 gigawatt hours annually, enough to power roughly 324 average U.S. homes. With a capacity factor between 40% and 70%, it offers more consistent energy production than single-source renewables.

The road ahead

NoviOcean has successfully tested three prototypes and is now preparing for a full-scale pilot. The company aims to have a commercial deployment by 2031-2032. While the initial levelized cost of energy is higher than established renewables, NoviOcean projects significant cost reductions as production scales up. The platform’s ability to generate power from multiple sources could prove valuable for grid stability and peak demand periods.
