Why this Virginia doctor says you should wait to unpack luggage after a trip

0

A primary care physician in Virginia has taken to TikTok to share a travel tip involving creepy crawlers that might make you rethink unpacking your bags right away.

The video posted by Dr. Jason Singh of Loudoun County, Virginia, has garnered more than 750,000 views after he shared a PSA about bed bugs and your luggage.

“Here’s why you shouldn’t unpack your suitcase right after coming home from a vacation,” Singh said on TikTok. “OK, so you hear me out, especially if you stayed in a hotel. And that’s because of bedbugs.”

AMID BEDBUG INFESTATION, SHOCKING VIDEO SHOWS A STREET IN PARIS LITTERED WITH OLD MATTRESSES

“Bed bug eggs typically hatch within six to 10 days, and the nymphs require a blood meal shortly after hatching to continue their development,” he added.

Singh said he decided to post this video after realizing that not many travelers had knowledge about bed bug exposure.

It was one of his patient’s cases that made him realize this possible bed bug infestation was worth educating others about.

“[I was] just struck by how persistent and distressing their bed bug reaction was, even weeks after returning from their trip. It made me realize that many travelers might not be aware of the potential long-term consequences of bed bug exposure,” Singh told Fox News Digital via email.

You may be more likely to get bed bugs if you put your clothes in a hotel closet and could risk infesting the rest of your clothes at home if you immediately unpack after returning from a vacation, according to Singh, a physician from Virginia. (iStock)

He realized he needed to fill the gap “in public knowledge about effective prevention strategies.”

On TikTok, Singh continued to describe the reasoning behind why bed bugs need to stay packed away and face exposure.

“Now, if your suitcase remains closed and undisturbed for at least two weeks, well, any bedbug egg or nymph present will likely die due to starvation or desiccation, so now you have a reason to be lazy, just like me,” he said in his video.

“And just let your suitcase hang there in the side. I mean, let’s be honest. What kind of psycho unpacks right away? Let me know.”

The comment section of Singh’s TikTok video was filled with other social media users talking about their unpacking habits.

“I unpack & throw everything in the washer as soon as I get home. I need all my stuff I travel with,” one user wrote.

“Who has two extra weeks of clothes that they don’t need when they get back from holiday! Or am I just a peasant and only have a week or two of clothes in total,” another person commented.

Eric Braun, a board-certified entomologist in Reading, Pennsylvania, shared his own thoughts on bed bug prevention and what to do if you spot something in your luggage.

“If a bed bug problem is a significant concern for the traveler, another helpful tip is not to store personal items and clothing inside hotel drawers, along the floor, or near hotel furniture. While I travel, I place my suitcase in the bathroom, specifically the shower/tub, as it can be difficult for bed bugs to access those areas,” Braun told Fox News Digital via email.

Braun advised travelers not to bring an assumed infested suitcase into a living space, but rather outside the home before placing the clothes in a trash bag and immediately into a laundry room.

“Remember that, in the right temperatures, bed bugs can live several months without being fed, so don’t assume that suitcases that haven’t been used in a few months are bed bug-free,” Braun said.

“If suitcases must be stored in living spaces, such as under beds, put them in trash bags first, and tape the bag shut. Suitcases can be treated with over-the-counter products labeled for that application,” he added.

What to do if you bring bed bugs home from a vacation

Braun shared tips and actions to take if you believe you found bed bugs in your luggage.

“If a bed bug is spotted, there are some immediate actions the traveler should take to avoid further spread. Anything that can be laundered can be immediately placed in the dryer at a high-temperature setting,” Braun said.

“Place personal belongings that can be laundered immediately in the dryer before washing. High heat (at least 1,300 F+) can kill bed bugs and their eggs.”

Braun said that if you have clothes that cannot immediately be thrown into the dryer, you should place the apparel in a closed bag or sealed container and place it outside your home and away from any possible entry points.

Ben Hottel, a Georgia-based technical service manager at Orkin, shared some insights on how best to treat your luggage if it’s infested with bed bugs.

Hottel agreed with Braun, stating that it is best to immediately unpack your bag outside the home and throw your clothes into the dryer at the highest sitting for a minimum of 30-45 minutes.

“Recently hatched nymphs can live up to a month without a blood meal. Older bed bugs that might also be in the suitcase can live much longer – maybe even up to a year … it’s best to do laundry immediately as the high temperature setting acts as a heat treatment,” Hottel told Fox News Digital.

Hottel advised people to call a pest control company if they believe there’s a bed bug infestation inside their home.

Flesh-eating bacteria cases in Florida rise after back-to-back hurricanes

0

The Florida Department of Health issued a warning to residents and visitors to avoid floodwaters as cases of flesh-eating bacteria continue to rise in the wake of back-to-back hurricanes that ravished the Gulf Coast.

In a press release, officials said there is an increased risk of Vibrio bacterial infections like Vibrio vulnificus, which can be life-threatening.

Data from the state’s health department shows 70 cases of Vibrio bacteria have been reported in 2024, which are responsible for 11 deaths. When compared to figures from 2022, the stats are similar to when Hurricane Ian damaged Collier and Lee counties, FOX 13 in Tampa reported.

The rise in cases in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Lee, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota counties, the health department noted, was due to impacts from hurricanes Helene and Milton.

According to the health department, Vibrio bacteria is commonly found in warm coastal waters and can cause illness when ingested or when open wounds are exposed to contaminated water.

“After heavy rainfall and flooding, the concentration of these bacteria may rise, particularly in brackish and saltwater environments,” the health department said.

Officials said individuals with compromised immune systems, liver disease or open wounds are at higher risk for Vibrio vulnificus.

If contracted, an individual may experience diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, chills, a quicker heart rate, confusion or disorientation.

The health department suggests anyone experiencing these symptoms after being exposed to floodwaters seek medical attention immediately.

To avoid contracting the flesh-eating bacterial infection, the health department suggests not swimming in floodwaters, standing water, seawater or brackish water, and to cover open cuts and wounds with waterproof bandages.

Along with a rise in life-threatening bacteria, FOX 13 reported that scientists are monitoring for a rise in Karenia brevis, also known as the algae that produces red tide, along the Gulf Coast.

After Hurricane Milton made landfall in Sarasota, satellites began to detect significant levels of chlorophyll, which can trigger red tide events.

While the toxins have the ability to cause an individual to have respiratory symptoms, exposure to Karenia brevis is not known to result in human death, though it can be detrimental to marine life.

Patients and experts share hope during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer patients and survivors are speaking out on how the treatment landscape is setting them up to not just survive, but thrive.

A recent report from the American Cancer Society (ACS) shows that although cases are still rising — particularly among younger women and groups such as Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders — mortality rates are dropping.

Since 1989, the rate of breast cancer deaths has declined 44%.

BREAST CANCER PATIENT SAYS NEW TYPE OF CHEMO SAVED HER LIFE: ‘I AM THRIVING’

Younger women under 50 saw a 1.4% increased rate of breast cancer year over year, while the latter groups faced 2-½ times the number of diagnoses, the report revealed.

Breast cancer patients and survivors are speaking out on how the treatment landscape is setting them up to not just survive, but thrive. (iStock)

The rise of breast cancer diagnoses is partly due to an uptick in risk factors, such as obesity and exposures to alcohol and ultra-processed foods, according to Karen Knudsen, CEO of the American Cancer Society in Pennsylvania.

“I’M A RADIOLOGIST – TO REDUCE BREAST CANCER RISK, EAT THESE 5 FOODS AND FOLLOW THESE HEALTHY HABITS

It’s not all bad news, she told Fox News, as a “survivor tsunami” is on the horizon.

“We have almost 19 million cancer survivors now in the United States,” Knudsen said. “And with the new advances in cancer treatment, we’re going to see even more survivors.”

Relieving cancer’s financial burden

More than half of cancer patients and survivors say they’ve taken on medical debt, according to the ACS.

A majority weren’t prepared for the costs, with 73% saying they are concerned about their ability to pay current or future health care expenses

Three in five people who are diagnosed with cancer face financial hardships, such as taking unpaid leave, losing health insurance or losing a job, the report found.

More programs, clinics and workplaces are offering financial relief and services to help ease the burden on breast cancer patients and survivors, including temporary housing.

One survivor, Shannon Barette, told Fox News that she owes much of her successful battle against bilateral breast cancer to Hope Lodge, an ACS community that provides housing for cancer patients and their caregivers in various locations across the country.

“We need a community to help every breast cancer survivor get the treatment they need.”

When Barette faced struggles with her physical and mental recovery, Hope Lodge made it possible for her to receive treatment at NYU and overcome the associated financial burdens, she said.

“Women need to focus on their treatment and recovery,” Barette told Fox News.

POTENTIAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF GOING 30 DAYS WITHOUT ALCOHOL

“We need a community to help every breast cancer survivor get the treatment they need. And they are entitled to world-class medicine. That should not be held back because of any kind of financial burden.”

After going through almost 2-½ years of treatment — including immunotherapy, chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery — Barette was declared cancer-free.

“Too many women face the added pressure of having to find a way to pay big bills while fighting for their lives.”

Most breast cancer patients rely on employer-sponsored coverage.

When Fox Business correspondent Gerri Willis learned she had stage 3 breast cancer eight years ago, her employer provided her with the health insurance coverage she needed to undergo treatment without experiencing financial setbacks.

“The diagnosis hit me hard, but I didn’t have to worry about being able to afford treatment,” Willis told Fox News.

“My employer had great health insurance coverage, and I was never forced to choose between paying a bill and getting treatment — but I was one of the lucky ones,” she went on.

“Too many women face the added pressure of having to find a way to pay big bills while fighting for their lives.”

Some employer plans offer case managers to help employees work through paying the bills and out-of-pocket costs, Willis noted.

For those who don’t have coverage, there are independent and government programs to help fund cancer essentials, from treatment to transportation.

Helping women build confidence

Coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, some clinics are offering complimentary laser tattoo removals for survivors who have radiation markings.

“They’ve gone through a huge journey that has been very sad, and now they want to feel comfortable in their own skin, whether it’s in clothing or in bathing suits,” Dr. Kevin Tehrani, a surgeon at Aristocrat Plastic Surgery in located in New York City and Great Neck, Long Island, told Fox News.

Dr. Tehrani and his team usually spend three to four sessions removing the tattoos until they are completely eradicated.

Earlier this month, the clinic removed four to five radiation marks from survivors.

Most survivors did not even realize they could have the markings removed, the doctor noted.

Dr. Tehrani also offers free screenings for breast cancer survivors who receive silicone implants, which is the majority of patients who opt for reconstructive surgery

Although the screening is typically covered by insurance in most states, the clinic is enhancing the service with their ultrasonographic technologies.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling’s kids aren’t allowed on social media, smartphones

The daughters of Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling might have access to one of Hollywood’s hottest couples, but they’re not getting time on social media or using a smartphone.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Mendes spoke about why daughters Esmeralda, 10, and Amada, 8, both of whom are home-schooled, are growing up a little differently than many children their age.

“Putting my kid on the internet and being like, ‘Oh, search something,’ that to me is equivalent to telling her, ‘Oh, just go down the street in the middle of the night. You’ll be fine,’” Mendes said.

Mendes says her approach to raising her children is based upon “conscious parenting,” which prioritizes the relationship between parent and child over following rules.

“I still have all this anxiety and I see myself passing it on to my children,” Mendes admitted. “Subconsciously I can’t imagine what they’re inheriting from me that I don’t want them to inherit from me.”

With that being said, Mendes makes it a point to not discuss body insecurities or aging around her children, insisting that her sisters follow that rule too.

“I’m not going to be able to control this narrative much longer. They’re getting to that age.”

Mendes and Gosling have also made a conscious effort to shield their daughters from the extremes of Hollywood, reportedly moving their family away from there so that their kids wouldn’t grow up among other children of celebrities.

“For them, the most important job is their girls. Everything else comes second,” a source claimed to People magazine in March. “And their girls are thriving. They left L.A. to live a bit further north, away from Hollywood. They didn’t want the girls to grow up around other celebrity kids.”

While Gosling is still a working actor, Mendes famously took a step back from acting 10 years ago to prioritize raising her children.

“I was never in love with acting. I don’t mean this in a self-deprecating way, but I wasn’t a great actress,” Mendes told The Sunday Times.

“I had my moments when I worked with really great people,” noting her best work has been with Gosling. “He gets something out of me that’s never been accessible before.”

In an interview last month with “Good Morning America,” Mendes shared similar sentiments, revealing that she might not ever return to acting.

“I don’t know. If there’s interesting roles… I kind of felt like I did it, you know? I was like, ‘I just worked with Ryan Gosling. He’s like, the best,'” she said, referencing their 2012 flick, “The Place Beyond the Pines.

“It was such a high [in] my career to work with him and what we created together, that I was like, ‘This is a good time to like ’Seinfeld’ it, and just walk out.’ So, who knows?”

Over 600M cyberattacks target Windows users every day

0

Cyberattacks are more common than ever, and if you’re a Windows user, you’re probably feeling the impact more than others.

Hackers are always targeting Windows PCs, and you’ve probably seen reports about how system vulnerabilities let bad actors get to your personal and financial information.

However, if you want to understand just how many cyberattacks Windows users face every day, you’d be shocked to know that the number is well above 600 million. This proves that cyberattacks are on the rise now more than ever.

What you need to know

Microsoft recently released its annual Digital Defense Report for 2024, revealing the state of the cybersecurity world.

“In the last year, the cyber threat landscape continued to become more dangerous and complex. The malign actors of the world are becoming better resourced and better prepared, with increasingly sophisticated tactics, techniques and tools that challenge even the world’s best cybersecurity defenders, the company said.

Microsoft says even it has been the victim of well-orchestrated attacks by determined and well-resourced adversaries, and its customers face more than 600 million cybercriminal and nation-state attacks every day, ranging from ransomware to phishing to identity attacks.”

It’s not just everyday users getting hit by these attacks. Hackers are also going after government agencies, companies and organizations. The U.S. health care system alone has reportedly faced 389 successful cyberattacks this fiscal year, causing network shutdowns and delays in critical medical procedures.

The Redmond-based company also points out that the rising threat of cyberattacks isn’t just from regular cybercriminals anymore. Nation-states are stepping up their game in the cyber world, with more advanced techniques, thanks to bigger investments in resources and training. These state-sponsored hackers aren’t just stealing data. They’re launching ransomware, setting up backdoors for future attacks, sabotaging operations and running influence campaigns. According to Microsoft, China, Russia, North Korea and Iran are the biggest players.

Most attacks target your password

Microsoft says 99% of the identity attacks are password attacks. They rely on predictable human behaviors such as selecting easy-to-guess passwords, reusing them on multiple websites and falling prey to phishing attacks. This shows the importance of using a reliable password manager.

A password manager helps you avoid common mistakes that make you an easy target for hackers. It stores all your passwords securely, generates strong, unique passwords for every site and autofills them when needed, so you don’t have to remember or reuse weak ones. Plus, it protects you from phishing attacks by ensuring you only log onto the correct sites. All of this reduces the chances of your accounts getting hacked and keeps your data safer. Get more details about my best expert-reviewed password managers of 2024 here.

DON’T LET SNOOPS NEARBY LISTEN TO YOUR VOICEMAIL WITH THIS QUICK TIP

6 ways to protect yourself from cyberattacks

1. Enable two-factor authentication: Activate two-factor authentication (2FA) for an extra layer of security on all your important accounts, including email, banking and social media. Using 2FA requires you to provide a second piece of information, such as a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password when logging in. This makes it significantly harder for hackers to access your accounts, even if they have your password. Enabling 2FA can greatly reduce the risk of unauthorized access and protect your sensitive data.

2. Monitor your accounts and transactions: You should check your online accounts and transactions regularly for any suspicious or unauthorized activity. If you notice anything unusual, immediately report it to the service provider or authorities. You should also review your credit reports and scores to see if there are any signs of identity theft or fraud.

3. Contact your bank and credit card companies: If you think hackers have obtained your bank or credit card information, they could use it to make purchases or withdrawals without your consent. You should inform your bank and credit card companies of the situation. They can help you freeze or cancel your cards, dispute any fraudulent charges and issue new cards for you.

You should also contact one of the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion) and request a fraud alert to be placed on your credit file. This will make it more difficult for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name without verification. You can even freeze your credit if need be.

4. Use personal data removal services: Consider investing in personal data removal services that specialize in continuously monitoring and removing your personal information from various online databases and websites. These services employ advanced tools and techniques to identify and eliminate your data from people search sites, data brokers and other platforms where your information might be exposed. By using a data removal service, you can minimize the risk of identity theft and fraud, especially after a data breach. Additionally, these services often provide ongoing monitoring and alerts, keeping you informed of any new instances of your data appearing online and taking immediate action to remove it. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

5. Sign up for identity theft protection: Identity theft protection companies can monitor personal information like your home title, Social Security number, phone number and email address and alert you if it is being used to open an account.  They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals.

One of the best parts of using some services is that they might include identity theft insurance of up to $1 million to cover losses and legal fees and a white glove fraud resolution team through which a U.S.-based case manager helps you recover any losses. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft.

6. Have strong antivirus software: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

WINDOWS FLAW LETS HACKERS SNEAK INTO YOUR PC OVER WI-FI

Kurt’s key takeaway

Cyberattacks are getting more dangerous, and hackers are way better equipped to pull off the perfect attack. They’re even using artificial intelligence and deepfakes to make everything seem more legit. Add in the fact that many of these attacks are backed by nation-states, and it’s clear we need to step up our cybersecurity game — more investment is definitely needed. On the bright side, Microsoft managed to block around 1.25 million DDoS attacks, which is four times more than last year. That shows they’re working hard to give users a safer experience.

Encircling Taiwan was a smokescreen for China’s real goal of convincing US not to intervene, expert says

KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN – Contrary to what much of the world’s media has reported, China’s 13-hour simulated blockade of Taiwan that began on Monday, Oct. 14, using a record-breaking number of planes, an aircraft carrier, and both Navy and Coast Guard vessels, was not quite so simple as China “punishing” Taiwan’s new president William Lai for comments he’s made since taking office in May of this year.

“China planned the exercises in advance and would have carried them out regardless of what Lai said,” nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council Global China Hub Elizabeth Freund Larus told Fox News Digital. “The military exercises are intended to wear down Taiwan’s military hardware and personnel. The purposes of the exercises are to threaten Taiwan’s security to the point that the Taiwan people lose confidence in their government and to change the status quo of a Taiwan separate from China.”

All those reasons would be enough to justify the military maneuvers if one views them from Beijing’s tactical standpoint, but senior research fellow with the R.O.C. Society for Strategic Studies, Dr. Chang Ching, who also served in the Navy for several decades, told Fox News Digital that people are missing the big picture. Chang pointed to publicly available military logs from Japan that tracked both Russian and Chinese ships over several days before the 13-hour exercise.

TAIWANESE PEOPLE READY TO FIGHT AS CHINA RAMPS UP AGGRESSION, AMBASSADOR SAYS

A joint staff press release from Japan’s Ministry of Defense on Monday, Oct. 14, stated, “On October 11, 2024 (Friday), around 5 PM, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force confirmed the presence of six vessels [four Chinese and two Russian] in the waters approximately 400 km (approx 248 miles) northeast of Okinotorishima Island (Tokyo).” These were just some of the ships identified, and Japanese press releases noted that they had been tracking both Chinese and Russian naval actions since late September.

The location of these ships at those times, Chang asserted, means they cannot have been plausibly connected to the short Taiwan blockade. “The real target is the United States,” he told Fox News Digital. “They were using a very old Chinese strategy called ‘encircling the point/striking the reinforcement;’ in other words, practicing ways to ambush the U.S. Navy if it heads towards an already held-hostage Taiwan. If China can convince the U.S. that intervening in any actions it chooses to take in the Taiwan Strait is not worth the risk, then Beijing wins.”

Other local experts had similar takes on the situation. Taiwan’s Central News Agency quoted assistant professor at Tamkang University Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies Lin Ying-yu, who argued that the timing of the military drills was an attempt by China to probe the United States’ ability to respond to simultaneous crises on the Korean Peninsula and in the Taiwan Strait.

CHINA SEEKS TO ‘WEAR DOWN TAIWAN’S RELIANCE’ WITH COVERT ECONOMIC AND CYBER OPERATIONS, US WARGAMERS SAY

The Chinese Navy, depending on what matrix is used to measure it, is either in second place after the U.S., has overtaken the U.S., or is basically even. Regardless of rankings, the Chinese have a formidable navy that is often dismissed as inexperienced. Analysts such as Chang, however, who’s spent his adult life studying military strategy and threats, say those who underestimate China’s navy do so at their peril.

China’s fleets boasts many smaller and more modern ships. According to the Center for Strategic & International Studies, about 70% of Chinese warships were launched after 2010, while only about 25% of the U.S. Navy’s were.

Unlike in the past, for Joint Sword 2024B there was no 24-hour prior notification, no specific latitude or longitude parameters were announced, and to add a final touch of menace, no date or time was given for when the exercise was scheduled to end.

Despite this, the general mood on the streets of Taiwan during the encirclement was calm, with almost no one telling the media they felt scared or threatened. Some say such nonchalance is worrying as it implies that the Taiwanese people are beginning to accept that their government and military are powerless to stop China’s incursions that inch closer each time – Joint Sword 2024B, for example, pushed to within 24 nautical miles of Taiwan.

China’s large and well-armed Coast Guard also took part in Joint Sword 2024B. Many Chinese Coast Guard ships are essentially warships, and the fleet includes several 10,000-ton vessels equipped with 76mm guns, and capable of top speeds of 25 knots (28.7 MPH).

In a move Elizabeth Freund Larus described as “rather macabre,” and Chang called “a cynical reflection of their ‘abusive relationship’ mindset,” an image was released on the official China Coast Guard Weibo account (China’s version of X), depicting a drill route around Taiwan in the shape of a heart. The image featured Chinese characters that translate roughly to “Hello my sweetheart! Our patrol is our way of loving you.”

Xi Jinping

In a recent poll, some 70% of Taiwanese said they expected some type of U.S. help in the event of a Chinese attack, but the U.S. reaction to Joint Sword 2024B was seen by some as being tepid and confusing.

“The United States is seriously concerned by the People’s Liberation Army joint military drills in the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement. “The PRC response with military provocations to a routine annual speech is unwarranted and risks escalation.”

FOR CHINA’S MILITARY PLANNERS, TAIWAN IS NOT AN EASY ISLAND TO INVADE

The State Department Asia Pacific Media Hub issued a statement via X on Oct. 15 that read in part, “We have closely monitored the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) exercise, JOINT SWORD 2024B, around Taiwan. This military pressure operation is irresponsible, disproportionate, and destabilizing.”

Some in Taiwan are asking why the State Department chose to use the word “disproportionate,” as Taiwan has done nothing that would warrant even a “proportionate” response. With just weeks to go before the American presidential election, all official comments coming out of D.C. are likely to be carefully vetted, which makes the State Department’s comments all the more puzzling.

Considering that almost anything Taiwan does is seen by Beijing as some sort of “pro-independence provocation,” there are calls in Taiwan for the democracies of the world, led by the United States, to come together and prepare concrete reactions to China’s continual attempts to change the status quo, militarize the Taiwan Strait, and deprive the people of Taiwan of their hard-won democracy.

Assistant Director of the Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub, Kitsch Liao, told Fox New Digital that it’s “imperative for Taiwan to provide an update to its National Security Strategy, last updated in 2007, to act as a North star, and to galvanize collective efforts toward peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

Marijuana use among seniors: Weighing the benefits and risks

0

While cannabis has historically been more popular with younger groups, a growing number of older adults are turning to the drug for a variety of reasons — but are the potential benefits worth the risk?

A recent poll by the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging found that among people 50 years of age and older, around 21% said they have used a form of cannabis that contains the psychoactive compound THC at least once in the past year, and 12% use it on a monthly basis.

Dr. Barbara Krantz, medical director of Older Adults Program, Withdrawal Management and Chronic Pain for Caron Treatment Centers in Florida, said her practice has seen a “significant uptick” in the use of cannabis by individuals over the age of 50.

DAILY MARIJUANA SMOKERS FACE HIGHER RISK OF HEART ATTACK, STROKE, SAYS AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION STUDY

“In our patient population at Caron, nearly all patients in our Older Adult Program have admitted to trying cannabis in some form,” she told Fox News Digital. “So, it is very common.”

A recent poll by the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging found that among people 50 years of age and older, around 21% said they have used cannabis within the past year, and 12% use it on a monthly basis. (iStock)

Why seniors turn to cannabis

Among the older adults who use cannabis, their primary reasons were to improve sleep (68%), to reduce pain (63%), to alleviate mental health issues (53%), and to relax or feel good (81%), according to the Michigan poll.

12% of adults over 50 use cannabis on a monthly basis.

“Most of the seniors we see report using cannabis products to manage issues such as sleep, pain, anxiety or depression, or a medical issue they’ve been struggling with,” Krantz said.

Today’s older adults are also the generation that grew up in the 60s and 70s, she noted, which means many of them may have earlier life experience with marijuana and may be more open to using it.

10 risks cannabis poses for older adults

While many older adults may assume they are familiar with the effects of marijuana, that false sense of comfort could be dangerous, Krantz warned.

MARIJUANA USE LINKED TO INCREASED ASTHMA RISK IN YOUTH, STUDY SAYS: ‘WORRISOME’ HEALTH IMPLICATIONS

“We’re finding that the marijuana or cannabis they remember is very different from what’s available today,” she said.

“Today’s marijuana is more potent, and their bodies are less able to process it.”

Purchasing cannabis

In some states, such as California, Oregon and Colorado, recreational cannabis use is legal. “This means seniors do not need a prescription and can purchase cannabis if they want it from a dispensary,” a legal expert said. (iStock)

Krantz outlined the following 10 potential dangers associated with cannabis use for older adults.

  • Increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack, stroke, increased hypertension and tachycardia
  • Interaction with other medications, which can increase their toxicity or decrease their effectiveness
  • Worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Accidental poisoning from ingestion
  • Balance issues that can lead to falls and breaks
  • Delayed reaction times that impair driving and cause accidents
  • Increased confusion or cognitive impairment
  • Psychosis
  • Increased anxiety, depression or anger
  • Surgery-related risks, including complications due to anesthesia and delays in healing

“Seniors should talk to their health care provider and their pharmacist before using any marijuana or cannabis product, because there are very real and specific dangers for older adults when using these substances,” Krantz said.

Interactions with other medications can be particularly dangerous, warned Shari B. Kaplan, a licensed clinical social worker and plant medicine formulator at Cannectd Wellness in Boca Raton, Florida.

AS SOLO AGING BECOMES MORE COMMON, HERE’S HOW TO THRIVE ON YOUR OWN

“Cannabis needs to be taken with caution with certain medications,” she told Fox News Digital.

“Blood thinners or blood pressure medications are two types of medications you’ll need to manage carefully, working closely with a medical cannabis physician.”

Older man back pain

Reducing pain is one of the common reasons that older adults may use cannabis, a poll found. (iStock)

Older patients could also face risks if they take too much cannabis for sleeping, Kaplan warned.

“If an elderly patient takes a high dose of THC in the evening to sleep, they need to be mindful of their balance if they wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom,” she said.

“Educating patients about taking their time when sitting up in bed and slowly standing with support is important for fall prevention.”

Legalities of cannabis use

Laws regarding cannabis use vary by state, according to Russel Morgan, a principal at Morgan Legal Group in New York City.

In some states, such as California, Oregon and Colorado, recreational cannabis use is legal.

“This means seniors do not need a prescription and can purchase cannabis if they want it from a dispensary,” Morgan told Fox News Digital.

“They are only required to show ID as proof of age, similar to purchasing alcohol.”

In the majority of other states, cannabis is allowed for medical purposes.

“Seniors who suffer from ailments such as chronic pain, arthritis or other qualifying conditions can get a doctor’s recommendation or medical marijuana card,” Morgan said.

In a handful of states, such as South Carolina and Nebraska, cannabis use is still illegal, the attorney noted.

“We do not actually know the best mode of delivery, device or dose that may provide a benefit medically for a specific condition, because what’s currently available at your dispensary hasn’t been through a clinical trial,” a doctor said. (iStock)

“It is important to note that on a federal level, cannabis is classified as a Schedule I substance and is considered illegal,” he added.

Krantz pointed out that a medical marijuana card is not actually a prescription, because marijuana and cannabis products are not FDA-approved.

What seniors should know before taking cannabis

Regardless of age, it’s important to talk to your health care provider about any cannabis use, experts agree, just as you would about any other supplement.

Dr. Robin Fowler, M.D., founder of Botanical Sciences, a Georgia medical cannabis provider, recommends that seniors start with a low dose and gradually increase it, especially if they are new to cannabis.

“Understanding the difference between a few of the primary cannabinoids — THC, CBD and others — is essential to ensuring they achieve the desired effects without discomfort,” he told Fox News Digital.

“Education is key — knowing the right strain, delivery method and dosage is vital for safe and effective use,” the expert continued.

“It’s also essential for seniors to source their cannabis products from licensed, reputable dispensaries to ensure product quality and safety.”

The home was purchased in May 2021, by Lance Zaal, the owner of the Lizzie Borden house and president of U.S. Ghost Adventures, Fox News Digital previously reported.

“The reason I bought the house is [that] it fit perfectly with what we do with spooky haunted tours across the United States,” Zaal told Fox News Digital in an in-person interview in 2023.

“We had plans to do more with physical locations — and the Lizzie Borden house was the perfect opportunity to do that.”

For those hoping to experience some sort of paranomormal activity at the location, Zaal noted that the room of Bridget Sullivan, the family’s maid, has had several out-of-the-ordinary encounters, with claims of music boxes sounding off and furniture being found moved across the room without a human in sight.

2. Buffalo Bill’s house

Stay overnight or take a tour of Buffalo Bill’s home from the five-time Academy Award-winning film, “Silence of the Lambs.”

The real “Conjuring House” in Rhode Island was not used when filming the movie in 2013, but it is the real location in which the reported paranormal happenings took place.

The “haunted” home, located in Burrillville, Rhode Island, shares a warning on the website for the “faint of heart.”

Another haunted home that inspired a classic horror film is “The Amityville Horror House,” which has made a few necessary changes over the years due to the home’s haunted history.

Ronald DeFeo Jr., a 23-year-old, shot and killed his parents and his siblings while they slept in their beds in 1974.

Only one year later, a new family, the Lutz family, purchased the DeFeo home, which has been known as “The Amityville Horror” house, Fox News previously wrote.

FALL FOLIAGE STUNS VISITORS ON WISCONSIN LAKE

After moving into the Long Island, New York, dwelling, the family reportedly experienced supernatural phenomena and were driven from the home — as the 1977 book and 1979 movie show.

The home featured in the film was not the actual Lutz family house on Long Island, but rather a home in New Jersey that was converted to look like the New York house.

Since the Lutz returned their home to the bank in 1976, the house has gone through a series of new homeowners, one who even changed the address from 112 Ocean Ave. to 108 Ocean Ave. in an effort to deter tourists from the home, Syfy.com reported.

It’s a private residence, so you cannot tour the house or seek out any sort of paranormal activity, but it has been noted that the home has not had any spooky reports since the Lutz family lived there.
