‘Why do I have restless legs at night?’: Ask a doctor

0

For some people, sleepless nights can be caused by racing thoughts, reactions to caffeine or overstimulation from using devices too close to bedtime.

But for those affected by restless legs syndrome (RLS), getting quality rest can seem impossible.

RLS is a nervous system condition that causes an irresistible urge to move the legs, often accompanied by tingling, pain, numbness or a sensation of “pulling.”

‘HOW MUCH SLEEP IS TOO MUCH?’ ASK A DOCTOR

Fox News Digital spoke to two medical doctors to learn more about the condition, as well as ways to reduce the triggers and symptoms.

What to know about restless legs syndrome

Restless legs syndrome is a neurological condition that results in the uncomfortable urge to move the legs.

“This usually happens in the evening or night when someone is sitting or lying down, but can happen anytime someone is sitting for a prolonged period of time, like riding in a car or a plane,” Beth Oller, M.D., a family physician with Rooks County Health Center in Stockton, Kansas, told Fox News Digital. “This interferes with sleep and rest.”

THE TOP 5 WORRIES — AND 5 WORST SLEEP HABITS — THAT ARE KEEPING AMERICANS UP AT NIGHT

RLS affects between 7% and 10% of the United States population.

It is more common among women and the risk increases with age, according to Cleveland Clinic.

The condition is known as early-onset RLS when the diagnosis is made before age 45. This type tends to run in families and progresses slowly, according to Oller.

Late-onset RLS begins after age 45 and progresses more quickly.

Symptoms and causes

An uncomfortable sensation in the legs that leads to the urge to move them is the main symptom of RLS.

“This is often described as a tingling or itching sensation, a crawling, creeping sensation, or aching and throbbing,” Oller said.

“These sensations are most commonly in the calf area, and sensations get worse when you’re resting.”

TO IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP, DO THIS ACTIVITY BEFORE BED, EXPERTS SUGGEST

Although symptoms are usually most noticeable in the evening, they can occur when sitting for a prolonged period of time.

The specific cause of RLS is not known, but genetics could play a role.

“It does often run in families, and there are some gene variants that have been linked to RLS,” Oller said.

Some medications have also been linked to RLS, as has excessive use of caffeine and alcohol, an expert said. (iStock)

Some medications have also been linked to RLS, as has excessive use of caffeine and alcohol, she added.

Certain lifestyle habits may impact the condition, according to Mike Sevilla, M.D., a family physician with Salem Family Care in Salem, Ohio.

“In talking with my patients, there can be individual triggers that may make RLS symptoms worse, like stress, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine,” he told Fox News Digital.

Finding relief

“There is no way to prevent RLS, and the seriousness can vary from person to person,” said Oller.

For those experiencing RLS, moving the legs does reduce the discomfort, but this relief only lasts for a short period of time, according to the doctor.

While there is no cure, there are ways to lessen symptoms, she noted.

One first-line treatment is to test for and correct any existing iron deficiency, which can be a contributing factor.

Plane stretching legs

RLS can happen anytime someone is sitting for a prolonged period of time, like riding in a car or a plane, a doctor said. (iStock)

Lifestyle changes may also help reduce RLS occurrence and symptoms, Oller said.

While moderate exercise can help with the condition, she recommends avoiding heavy or intense exercise several hours before bedtime.

Salem suggests stretching leg muscles in the evening, soaking the legs in a warm tub and aiming for a regular sleep schedule of six to eight hours per night.

Avoiding caffeine or alcohol for several hours before bed can also help prevent symptoms.

If these approaches aren’t effective, there are medications available to treat RLS.

“Generally, the first medications prescribed will be ones that increase dopamine in the leg, like pramipexole or ropinirole,” Oller said.

Anyone who is experiencing persistent symptoms that create sleep disruptions should contact a doctor for guidance.

Hezbollah fires rocket salvo at northern Israel, Iranian leader vows ‘Axis of Resistance’ will continue

0

Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets into northern Israel, including near the city of Haifa, on Saturday after the Israeli military said more than 100 projectiles crossed into Israel from Lebanon.

The Lebanese terror group said its “large salvo” of rockets hit a military base east of Haifa, AFP News reported. The Israel Defense Forces said approximately 180 projectiles were fired by Hezbollah, which has vowed to escalate its war against Israel after IDF strikes killed senior Hezbollah leaders.

“The IDF will continue to defend the State of Israel and its people against the threat posed by the Hezbollah terrorist organization,” the IDF said in a statement.

At least five people suffered shrapnel injuries in Kiryat Ata, in the city of Haifa, the emergency service provider Magen David Adom said, according to AFP.

A rocket reportedly damaged a three-story building and burned two cars in Kiryat Ata, the outlet said.

The Saturday attacks followed after a UAV was launched towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in the coastal city of Caesarea.

Netanyahu and his wife were not home when the incident happened, his spokesperson told Fox News. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has stepped up its attacks on Israel in recent weeks after the IDF successfully sabotaged the terror group’s electronic communications and killed its senior leaders, including Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and his replacement.

Israel struck another great blow against Iran’s proxy groups this week with the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

Hezbollah and Hamas, along with other proxy groups, comprise an “Axis of Resistance” that Iran has used to oppose Israel and the U.S. and wield power in the Middle East for decades.

Speaking on Saturday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Sinwar’s death would not stop the “Axis of Resistance” and that Hamas would live on.

“His loss is undoubtedly painful for the Axis of Resistance, but this front did not cease advancing with the martyrdom of prominent figures,” Khamenei said in a statement. “Hamas is alive and will remain alive.”

SINWAR’S RUTHLESS BROTHER MOHAMMED SLATED TO TAKE OVER AS LEADER OF HAMAS

Sinwar, the architect of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel that triggered the war in Gaza, was killed on Wednesday in a gunfight with Israeli forces after a year-long manhunt, and his death was announced on Thursday.

“He was a shining face of resistance and struggle. With a steely resolve, he stood against the oppressive and aggressive enemy. With wisdom and courage, he dealt them the irreparable blow of October 7 that has been recorded in the history of this region. Then, with honor and pride, he ascended to the heavens of the martyrs,” said Khamenei.

Rising crypto scams leave Americans reeling from billions in losses

0

Cryptocurrency was supposed to change the way we handle money. We kept hearing from influencers and “experts” about how it would give you full control of your cash and how secure it is.

But scammers have shown that crypto isn’t as foolproof as promised. It’s actually pretty easy to steal. The FBI reported Americans lost $5.6 billion to crypto scams in 2023, a 45% jump from the year before.

Over 69,000 people filed complaints with the Feds’ Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) last year, and most of them were aged 60 and up.

The most common crypto scams

The FBI’s IC3 report highlighted various crypto scams, most of which involve strong social engineering tactics.

Investment fraud

First off, we have investment fraud. Scammers contact you via call, text, or email, promising huge (unheard of) profits if you invest in cryptocurrency. They tell you that everyone is investing and making massive returns, and if you don’t, you will miss out. This usually works on people who are eager to invest but aren’t sure how to get started — in other words, those who have the cash to invest but aren’t very tech-savvy. Losses from investment fraud schemes reported to the IC3 rose from $2.57 billion in 2022 to $3.96 billion in 2023, an increase of 53%.

Relationship-building scams

Scammers sometimes build a relationship with you to make the scam seem legit. They use dating apps, social media, professional networking sites or encrypted messaging apps to get close to their targets. Once they’ve gained your trust, they bring up cryptocurrency investment. They might claim they have some expertise or know an expert who can help you make big money. Then, they push you to use fake websites or apps — ones they control — to invest in crypto.

To make things even worse, scammers sometimes go after the same people again by pretending to be fake crypto-recovery specialists. They promise to help recover the money the original scammers stole but end up taking even more cash and disappearing with that, too. “There is one thing these scammers typically will not do — they will not meet with you in real life,” the Feds said.

HOW TO AVOID BECOMING A MOVING SCAM VICTIM

Scammers are targeting elderly folks

Crypto scammers are primarily targeting people over 60, especially those who aren’t very familiar with technology. According to the Feds, most of the complaints they received in 2023 — about 16,806 — came from this age group. In total, they lost over $1.6 billion to these scams. Looking at complaints across all age groups, it’s clear the losses are staggering. Here’s a breakdown of the 2023 complaints and losses by age group:

  • Under 20: 858 complaints, $14.7 million in losses
  • 20-29: 6,258 complaints, $168.6 million in losses
  • 30-39: 10,849 complaints, $693.7 million in losses
  • 40-49: 10,318 complaints, $843.9 million in losses
  • 50-59: 8,918 complaints, $901.1 million in losses
  • Over 60: 16,806 complaints, $1.65 billion in losses

“While individuals in the age ranges of 30–39 and 40–49 filed the most cryptocurrency-investment fraud complaints (approximately 5,200 reports in each age group), complainants over the age of 60 reported the highest losses (over $1.24 billion),” noted the FBI report.

DON’T FALL PREY TO THIS ELECTION SEASON’S CRAFTIEST SCAMS

What you need to know before getting yourself into crypto

There’s a lot about crypto and crypto scams that we don’t know, so to gain some expert insights, I asked Paige Schaffer, CEO of Iris Powered by Generali, provider of a proprietary identity and cyber protection platform, some questions that many of us have in mind.

1. What steps should someone take if they suspect they’ve fallen victim to a cryptocurrency scam?

“If you suspect that you’ve fallen victim to a cryptocurrency scam, it’s crucial to act quickly to mitigate potential losses. First, immediately stop all transactions with the suspected scammer — this includes halting any ongoing investments, withdrawals, or deposits to prevent further loss. Next, change your passwords and enable two-factor authentication on all your related accounts if you haven’t done so already. This includes your email and any other linked financial accounts.”

Also, consider using a password manager to securely store and generate complex passwords. It will help you to create unique and difficult-to-crack passwords that a hacker could never guess. Second, it also keeps track of all your passwords in one place and fills passwords in for you when you’re logging into an account so that you never have to remember them yourself. The fewer passwords you remember, the less likely you will be to reuse them for your accounts. Get more details about my best expert-reviewed password managers of 2024 here.

2. How can individuals verify the legitimacy of a cryptocurrency exchange or platform before investing?

“Before you invest in crypto, search online for the name of the company or person and the cryptocurrency name, plus words like ‘review,’ ‘scam’ or ‘complaint.’ See what others are saying. You can also check for any news articles about the exchange. Positive news about partnerships or technological advancements can be a good sign, whereas reports of security breaches or legal issues are red flags.”

Popular exchanges like Binance, Coinbase and Kraken have a history of security and transparency, unlike many smaller, lesser-known platforms that could be fraudulent or easily hacked.

3. Are there any specific security measures people should implement to protect their digital wallets and cryptocurrency assets?

“Strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication are a must for digital wallets and crypto assets. We also recommend hardware wallets for storing large amounts of crypto assets, as these are not connected to the internet and provide superior protection against hacking. It’s important to regularly update wallet software to ensure vulnerabilities are patched.”

4. What advice would you give to someone who’s interested in investing in cryptocurrency but is concerned about potential scams?

“It’s wise to be concerned about scams in the crypto universe, so you’re already on the right track! Keep this mindset but know that there is a safe way to invest in cryptocurrency. Start by first investing time in researching and understanding different cryptocurrencies, including their market trends, technological foundations, and community and developer activities. Only use reputable exchanges and wallets which adhere to regulatory standards and offer robust security measures.”

HOW SCAMMERS ARE USING YOUR PERSONAL DATA FOR FINANCIAL SCAMS AND HOW TO STOP THEM

5 other important ways to protect yourself from crypto scams

1. Be skeptical of “too good to be true” offers: One of the biggest red flags in crypto scams is the promise of guaranteed, massive returns with little or no risk. Scammers will often entice people with claims of doubling or tripling their investments in a short period. Always approach these offers cautiously, as legitimate investments don’t guarantee profits.

2. Avoid sharing personal information: Your personal information is your gateway to your crypto funds, and scammers often try to trick people into sharing sensitive details like private keys, passwords or wallet information. Never share this data with anyone, even if they claim to be from a legitimate company or exchange. Be especially cautious of phishing emails or fake customer service representatives asking for your details — reputable companies will never ask for this kind of information.

3. Have strong antivirus software installed on all of your devices: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

4. Watch out for unsolicited contacts: Scammers often reach out to potential victims through social media, dating apps, professional networking platforms or even email, pretending to be friends, financial advisers or crypto experts. If someone you don’t know offers an investment opportunity, claims to have inside knowledge or urges you to act quickly, it’s a major red flag.

5. Remove your personal information from the internet: Getting your personal information off the web is key to stopping scammers from contacting you in the first place. With data removal services, you can remove your data from databases and websites that expose it to cybercriminals. By taking this step, you reduce the risk of being targeted by scammers who might otherwise use your info to trick you into downloading malware or giving up passwords to your personal accounts. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

BEWARE OF ENCRYPTED PDFS AS THE LATEST TRICK TO DELIVER MALWARE TO YOU

Kurt’s key takeaway

While cryptocurrency might seem like a great way to make money, it’s full of risks, and I’d say steer clear unless you’re really tech-savvy. I’m not against the technology itself — it does have the potential to deliver on all the promises. However, since crypto cuts out intermediaries like banks, it also opens the door for criminals to take advantage of it for things like theft, fraud, and money laundering.

“So, the emotions you are feeling are valid,” she confirmed.

PROCESSING THE SUICIDES OF BELOVED STARS: GRIEF EXPERTS SHARE THOUGHTFUL INSIGHTS

“With media, it can sometimes feel like we really know a celebrity, and the thought of them no longer being there is difficult to deal with, even though we may never have actually met them.”

With an artist like Payne in particular, Hagen said the nostalgia some fans have after growing up listening to One Direction’s music may intensify the impact of his death.

“These fans might reflect on memories tied to the celebrity’s music and the joy those moments brought to them growing up,” she said.

People in younger generations – namely Gen Z and younger millennials – could be more impacted by Payne’s death, the expert suggested, since he was “still a young man and active in his career.”

ONE DIRECTION MEMBERS ‘DEVASTATED BY’ LIAM PAYNE’S DEATH, SAY THEY WILL ‘MISS HIM TERRIBLY’

“This may be the first celebrity death they are encountering, which might create more emotion than for someone of an older demographic,” Hagen said.

People processing the loss of a celebrity should allow themselves to experience the full range of feelings associated with grief, including anger, sadness and nostalgia, she advised.

Hagen also recommends practicing self-care and focusing on tasks that promote happiness, like spending time with loved ones or enjoying a favorite hobby.

“Listening to Liam and One Direction’s music may be cathartic at this time,” she said.

It’s common for celebrity deaths to trigger feelings associated with past tragedies, Hagen noted.

“The feelings we experience may be attached to previous pain that we still carry with us,” she said.

“Seek professional support if your feelings become too intense or interfere with daily life,” the expert advised. “They can help you process your grief in a healthy way.”

Sharing your feelings with friends and fellow fans can also be a helpful coping mechanism, according to Hagen.

“Sharing your favorite memories of them can help create a sense of connection,” she said. “Discussing your thoughts can provide comfort and help you feel less alone in your grief.”

Los Angeles-based grief specialist David Kessler reiterated that talking about the tragedy is an important step in processing the sudden loss of a celebrity — or the loss of anyone who is loved or admired.

Talking about the loss is not only helpful for those who are grieving, but it also honors the person who died, Kessler noted in a previous interview with Fox News Digital.

“Public grief is real grief,” he said.

New Alzheimer’s research reveals ‘quiet’ phase of the disease

0

New details have emerged about how Alzheimer’s disease affects the brain.

Researchers led by the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle and University of Washington Medicine have identified cellular changes in the brains of people with the disease — and a timeline of when they occur.

“Instead of looking at AD just through the usual lens of plaques and tangles, we focused on how specific cell types were changed in each phase,” study author Dr. Kyle Travaglini, Ph.D., a scientist at Allen Institute, told Fox News Digital via email.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE COULD BE SLOWED BY BOOSTING A CERTAIN PROTEIN IN THE BRAIN, RESEARCHERS SAY

“We identified two main phases in AD by arranging donors along a continuous disease trajectory — a slow, early phase with low levels of pathology and no cognitive decline, followed by a later phase where there’s a huge buildup of pathology and cognitive decline.”

The study, which was published this week in Nature Neuroscience, examined millions of cells from the donated brain tissue of 84 deceased Alzheimer’s patients.

The donors ranged from mild cases with no symptoms to advanced dementia cases.

TO REDUCE DEMENTIA RISK, SENIORS SHOULD TAKE UP THIS OUTDOOR ACTIVITY, STUDY SUGGESTS

“By studying research subjects across the spectrum of AD, including those in the earliest stages of disease, we hope to identify vulnerable cells early in the disease process, long before a person develops symptoms,” C. Dirk Keene, professor of neuropathology at UW Medicine, said in a press release.

Researchers focused on the middle temporal gyrus (MTG) — the part of the brain that controls language, memory and vision.

That portion of the brain is known as a “critical transition zone,” where evidence of Alzheimer’s appears and then worsens as the disease progresses.

Using machine learning technology, researchers compared the cells, genes and DNA of the Alzheimer’s brain samples to maps of the normal brain generated by the Allen Institute.

“With these tools, scientists were able to detect the earliest cellular changes to the brain to create a more complete picture of what happens over the entire course of the disease,” John Ngai, Ph.D., director of The BRAIN Initiative, said in the release.

“We created a pathology clock that tells not only what changes are happening in this cortical region, but when.”

“The new knowledge provided by this study may help scientists and drug developers around the world develop diagnostics and treatments targeted to specific stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” he added.

Creating a disease timeline

The study identified “two distinct phases” of Alzheimer’s disease.

“You could say we created a pathology clock that tells not only what changes are happening in this cortical region, but when,” said Mariano Gabitto, Ph.D., a lead author and assistant investigator at the Allen Institute, in the release.

First, there was a “slow, early buildup of abnormal cellular changes,” the researchers noted.

During this period, the patient may not experience any symptoms of memory loss or cognitive decline.

In that first phase, the researchers were surprised to discover the loss of certain inhibitory neurons that were not previously linked to Alzheimer’s.

DEMENTIA ADVICE: HERE ARE 16 SAFE THINGS TO SAY TO YOUR LOVED ONE

Travaglini described that as a “critical discovery,” as those neurons act as “brakes” for brain activity and “keep things balanced.”

“This specificity gives us new clues about how and why certain brain circuits could break down in AD,” he said.

Richard J. Hodes, MD, director of the NIH National Institute on Aging, noted that one of the challenges in diagnosing and treating Alzheimer’s is that much of the damage to the brain happens in this early phase, before symptoms occur.

“The ability to detect these early changes means that, for the first time, we can see what is happening to a person’s brain during the earliest periods of the disease,” he said in the release.

“For the first time, we can see what is happening to a person’s brain during the earliest periods of the disease.”

The second phase was marked by a “much more extensive loss” of different types of neurons and cells, leading to the accumulation of the hallmark “plaques and tangles” in the brain — which is typically when patients begin to notice cognitive decline.

The bigger picture

Igor Camargo Fontana, Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Association director of scientific conference programming in Chicago, was not involved in the study but shared what he described as the “bigger picture” it revealed.

“Alzheimer’s disease has a long pre-symptomatic period; Alzheimer’s-related changes take place in the brain 10, 15 or even 20 years before the onset of memory and thinking symptoms,” he told Fox News Digital.

“If the findings in this new paper are confirmed by other labs, it raises the question of whether effectively addressing the brain changes that happen in what the authors call the first ‘quiet’ phase can slow, delay or prevent the second, more destructive phase.”

Looking ahead, Fontana says it will be important to further investigate the “quiet” phase to confirm how it’s linked to the better-known biomarkers of Alzheimer’s, such as amyloid and tau.

Trump campaign slams ‘witch hunt’ after Jack Smith court docs released less than 3 weeks before election

0

The judge in former President Donald Trump’s federal election interference case on Friday made public more documents from special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the former president just weeks before the 2024 election.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered on Thursday night that additional documents be made public. The hundreds of pages of documents are Smith’s appendix of exhibits in the fight over whether Trump has a level of presidential immunity that negates the charges against him.

“Radical Democrats are hell-bent on interfering in the presidential election on behalf of Lyin’ Kamala Harris,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told Fox News Digital. “With just over two weeks until Election Day, President Trump is dominating this race and Crazed Liberals throughout the Deep State are freaking out.”

Cheung added: “As mandated by the Supreme Court’s historic decision on Presidential Immunity and other vital jurisprudence, this entire case is a sham and a partisan, Unconstitutional Witch Hunt that should be dismissed entirely — as should ALL of the remaining Democrat hoaxes.”

JUDGE UNSEALS KEY FILING IN SPECIAL COUNSEL’S ELECTION CASE AGAINST TRUMP

The majority of pages released to the public remain under seal and are not viewable by the public. Much of the unsealed material has been previously released in some form, including transcripts by the House Select Committee on Jan. 6. Other documents include old Trump campaign press releases, fundraising emails, White House press conference transcripts and news articles.

In the order to release the documents, Chutkan cited Trump’s claim that the “asymmetric release of charged allegations and related documents during early voting creates a concerning appearance of election interference.”

According to the judge, while there is a public interest for courts to avoid involving themselves in elections, “it is in fact Defendant’s requested relief that risks undermining that public interest.”

“If the court withheld information that the public otherwise had a right to access solely because of the potential political consequences of releasing it, that withholding could itself constitute — or appear to be — election interference,” she argued.

She added that the court would continue keeping political considerations out of decisions, despite the defense’s request.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him by Smith.

The Supreme Court earlier this year ruled that a president is immune from prosecution for official acts.

Smith was then required to file another indictment against Trump, revising the charges in an effort to navigate the Supreme Court ruling. The new indictment kept the prior criminal charges but narrowed and reframed allegations against Trump after the high court’s ruling that gave broad immunity to former presidents.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges in the new indictment as well.

TRUMP ATTORNEYS ARGUE JACK SMITH’S OBSTRUCTION CHARGES BE DISMISSED CITING SUPREME COURT’S ‘FISCHER’ DECISION

In a filing unsealed earlier this month, Smith outlines a “factual proffer,” alleging Trump “resorted to crimes to try to stay in office” after losing the 2020 presidential election.

“With private co-conspirators, the defendant launched a series of increasingly desperate plans to overturn the legitimate election results in seven states that he had lost — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin,” Smith wrote.

Smith claims that the “throughline of these efforts was deceit,” claiming Trump and co-conspirators engaged in a conspiracy to interfere with the federal government function by which the nation collects and counts election results, which is set forth in the Constitution and the Electoral Count Act (ECA); a conspiracy to obstruct the official proceeding in which Congress certifies the legitimate results of the presidential election; and a conspiracy against the rights of millions of Americans to vote and have their votes counted.”

A video has captured a woman in India miraculously escaping injury after a water tank fell from a roof and landed perfectly around her.

The incident happened in Surat earlier this month after the woman was returning home from a Hindu temple where she had just offered donations to the local deities, according to Viral Press.

Footage shows the woman leaving a building and beginning to walk across a street when the water tank plunges out of the sky.

However, instead of being hit by the tank, it ends up slotting directly over the woman, leaving her unharmed.
