A family in Queensland, Australia, is faced with selling their dream home to raise money for their daughter’s life-saving therapy.

Tallulah Moon, 5, has been diagnosed with SPG56, a degenerative brain disease that is caused by a rare gene mutation.

Tallulah was a healthy, happy baby until shortly after her first birthday, when she suddenly began to lose her motor skills.

“She was hitting all of her milestones, and then suddenly she experienced a really steep regression — her abilities sort of fell like an avalanche off the cliff, and it was terrifying,” Golden Whitrod, Tallulah Moon’s mother, told Fox News Digital during an on-camera interview.

“She went from a little girl who was walking and talking to suddenly not even being able to sit up on her own, not being able to lift her arms above her shoulders or hold up her neck,” Whitrod said.

Swallowing and choking also became a concern.

“We’d gone from watching this beautiful child thrive at 14 months, to regressing to the abilities of a 4-month-old,” Whitrod recalled.

Tallulah Moon was also terrified, unable to comprehend the loss of her abilities.

“I remember her looking at us as if to say, ‘Why can’t you help me?’” her mother said. “And I could feel that as a parent. I just didn’t know what to do.” 

A devastating diagnosis

At first, Whitrod hoped there would be an easy fix for whatever was causing Tallulah’s decline.

After six months of testing and scans, doctors performed a genetic study known as whole genome sequencing (WGS), leading to Tallulah Moon’s diagnosis of SPG56 in August 2020.

SPG56 is a type of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) that usually begins around age 1 or 2 and worsens over time, causing muscle weakness and gradually robbing children of the ability to walk, talk, stand and sit up, as seen in past cases.

In later stages, the disease can cause cognitive decline, seizures and even an inability to swallow.

SPG56 is one of the rarest types of HSP, affecting fewer than one in every million children, statistics show.

“We’d gone from watching this beautiful child thrive at 14 months, to regressing to the abilities of a 4-month-old.”

There is currently no cure for the disease.

“The doctors told us, ‘just love your baby,’” Whitrod said. “They said there was nothing they could do — that there were no treatments.”

A mother’s determination

After “coming out of the fog” post-diagnosis, Whitrod immersed herself in research, making connections with other families whose children were also living with rare genetic diseases.

One of those was Terry Pirovolakis, a Canadian father whose son was diagnosed with SGP50, a disease that is very similar to Tallulah Moon’s SPG56.

Pirovolakis immediately started researching to find a gene therapy that could help his son.

After meeting with experts from around the world, he liquidated his life savings and paid a team of researchers to start developing the therapy. In 2022, after massive fundraising efforts, his son received the one-time treatment, which halted progression of the disease.

Following Pirovolakis’ lead, Whitrod met with scientists at genetic institutes and carefully built her own research team.

Over a three-year period, the team created an experimental gene therapy for SPG56, which Whitrod calls a “massive win.”

The next step is for the therapy to go through clinical trials to make sure it’s safe and effective for the children who need it — but the cost is too high for the vast majority of families to cover.

It will require a staggering $3 million to manufacture the medication before it can be administered to Tallulah Moon in a clinical trial, according to Whitrod.

“Unfortunately, the big pharmaceutical companies just aren’t interested in funding the research for these rare diseases, even though the treatments are possible,” she said.

“We realized that we have to fund this on our own if we want to do this.”

Walter Gaman, MD, founder of Executive Medicine of Texas, emphasized the financial burden that often comes with rare diseases.  

“Rare diseases, by nature, account for a small market share, meaning that there are few customers to absorb the cost of bringing effective drugs to market,” Gaman, who is not affiliated with the Whitrod family, told Fox News Digital. 

“We realized that we have to fund this on our own if we want to do this.”

In 2003, Deloitte reported that the average cost of bringing a drug to market exceeded $2 billion, according to Gaman. 

“One of the most significant wins for orphan drugs came in 2017, when President Trump signed the Food and Drug Administration Reauthorization Act (FDARA) into law,” he noted. 

“This was a huge win for orphan therapies because it expanded the FDA Rare Disease Program and also expedited the review process. As a result, 2018 saw a record 59 orphan drugs greenlighted. We need to build that momentum up once again.”

 In 2003, the average cost of bringing a drug to market exceeded $2 billion.

There is still a lot of work to do, he noted. 

“We need to bring orphan drugs to market, but we also need to look at ways of making these drugs more affordable to the end user,” Gaman said. 

Some potential ideas are to offer tax breaks to companies that champion such drugs, or to have a tax on pharmaceutical companies that goes directly to the FDA Rare Disease Program, he suggested.

A ‘much bigger dream’

“We’re standing at the precipice of there being a treatment for Tallulah and for children in her position,” Whitrod said. 

“We feel like we’re almost there. But, of course, $3 million for a little Aussie family is quite a lot.”

The Whitrods have launched a charitable foundation called Genetic Cures for Kids, with a fundraising initiative called Our Moon’s Mission.

The family has raised some funds through donations, but it’s only a fraction of what is needed to treat Tallulah Moon — hence their decision to sell their home. 

The house, which is located in the suburb of Stuart Park, is scheduled to go up for auction this week.

“We’d hoped that some miracle would happen and we wouldn’t need to sell it, and that help would come before we needed to come to this crunch point,” Whitrod said. 

“But in the end, we realized that’s our last asset that we have, and that could help us get to the finish line.”

While they are sacrificing their family’s “dream home,” Whitrod says they are now aspiring to a “much bigger dream.”

“That is to give Tallulah the life she deserves — and we’re all in for that.”

Meanwhile, Whitrod said, Tallulah Moon is working to fight the neurodegenerative disease through physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

“If we can get there in time, then we can help Tallulah live the life she deserves — and not just her, but also lots of children just like her.”

A time capsule from 1924 was unveiled at the National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri.

The 100-year-old box was laid at the cornerstone of the Liberty Memorial Tower two years before the memorial opened to the public and was found in June by officials. 

The Liberty Memorial was dedicated “in honor of those who served in World War One in defense of liberty and our country,” according to Kansas City Parks and Recreation.

The Kansas City Police Department’s bomb squad inspected the capsule due to concerns about the presence of film inside the capsule.

“We were unsure if it was a type of film that degrades over time and that could have caused an explosion. Once it was determined that the time capsule was safe to open, team members worked diligently to unwrap everything and assess its condition,” said a museum spokesperson via email to Fox News Digital.

Three items were left to be unwrapped at the live showing.

Historians uncovered letters from the five commanders of the Allied powers and one penned by President Calvin Coolidge.

In his letter to the Liberty Memorial Association, Coolidge wrote, “I am pleased to hear you are within a few days to lay [the] corner stone of the great memorial,” according to museum officials.

Another unwrapped item, “seeds of the day,” was in a tube and in envelopes from the Department of Agriculture Seed Lab, giving viewers a glimpse into popular crops of the time.

Bronze plates featuring the front page of the Kansas City Star newspaper and a photo of the five Allied commanders were also included in the capsule.

Other artifacts found were various photos, the U.S. Constitution, site documents and a Bible.

“We found several signatures on the inside of the box and [on the] back of the bronze plates. There were also periodicals from the Kansas City Chamber that shared what the city was like in 1924,” the spokesperson added.

An Atlanta woman was taking her daily vitamins on vacation when she accidentally swallowed her diamond wedding ring. 

Dannah McMichael, 39, and her husband, Randy McMichael, were on vacation in Phuket, Thailand, when the unthinkable happened. 

“We went out for dinner and drinks and when I got back, I wanted to shower,” she told SWNS.

“Without looking, I threw everything in my mouth and washed it down with water,” she said.

McMichael said her husband was relieved, as he thought the massage therapist might have “swiped it” off his wife’s finger. 

Doctors at the clinic told McMichael that she would pass the ring naturally — which she confirmed to Fox News Digital did happen.

“I swallowed it Sunday and passed it Wednesday or Thursday,” she said, adding, “No pain at all.”

McMichael said she was relieved when it came out because she was worried about flushing it down the toilet.

McMichael, who regularly shares her travel adventures on social media, joked after the occasion by posting a video of the X-ray and her ring soaking in disinfectant.

An airline passenger took to social media sharing a photo of a fellow traveler asking, “What’s the etiquette here?” when it comes to controlling the window shade.

The user wrote, “Entire cabin dark, FA [flight attendant] asks him to lower shade and he says ‘um no.’”

On the sub-Reddit forum titled “americanairlines,” users debated who is in control of the window shade.

“His shade, his choice,” one Reddit user wrote.

“This is why I always book the window. These people are so inconsiderate,” said one user.

One suggested, “Bring sunglasses or wear a hoodie if you don’t have a window seat.”

“I always leave mine open. It helps with motion sickness. But if told to lower it I would,” another person wrote.

Fox News Digital reached out to the original Reddit poster for comment.

Former flight attendant and etiquette expert based in Mount Dora, Florida, Jacqueline Whitmore, told Fox News Digital via email, “the person seated in the window seat controls the window shade.”

“On daytime flights, it’s considerate to close the shade during the in-flight entertainment or when others are sleeping, as sunlight can be disruptive. Conversely, keeping the shade open during meals and landing in the morning can help travelers adjust to the time zone and alleviate jet lag,” Whitmore said.

For safety reasons, the shade should always remain open for take-off, she added.

“The shade should be closed in order to keep the plane cool when the flight attendant or pilot instructs you to do so. This usually happens when the plane has landed and will sit at the gate for awhile until the next group of passengers board,” Whitmore said.

Many users who commented on the Reddit thread said they were surprised that the flight attendant asked the passenger in the window seat to close the shade.

“FAs using the ‘you must follow crew member instructions’ thing to enforce their preferences vs actual rules is part of why their is an issue with people not following instructions,” a Redditor said.

Another comment said, “I doubt FA asked him to lower it mid flight. For boarding/departure sure as it helps keep the cabin cool.”

Other users said they felt the flight attendant was in the right.

“Etiquette is to follow crew members’ instructions. That’s the only etiquette. Everything else is made up,” one person said.

Another wrote, “If the flight attendant asks, it’s not a request, it’s a command, especially for takeoff and landing.”

“A FA will ask on AA if it’s a long haul international flight to allow people to sleep and minimize jet lag. Domestically, no they shouldn’t ask. However, if for some unknown safety reason a FA asks you to close it, and you don’t comply, that’s a violation of an FAA regulation to comply with crew member instructions,” claimed another.

Christina Hall’s estranged husband, Josh Hall, allegedly requested $65,000 of monthly spousal support as the two hammer out their divorce.

The HGTV star’s lawyer claimed in an Oct. 10 legal filing obtained by Fox News Digital that the request was “outrageous” because Josh is “self-supporting.” The court documents were filed in response to Josh’s attempt to block the sale of Christina’s Tennessee home amid the former couple’s ongoing divorce.

“The claim by [Josh] that he sent a good faith settlement offer is not an accurate characterization of the communication. The Petitioner Josh Hall requesting $65,000 per month in Spousal Support from [Christina] on a 2-year, 9-month marriage when he is self-supporting is hardly good faith,” the documents read. “[Josh] just paid $70,000 to pay off the lease on [his] separate property Bentley and so he has no need for spousal support from [Christina].”

Josh slammed the legal filing in a statement shared on social media Wednesday night.

“So now @dearmeylaw files legal declarations with lies and assumptions… interesting tactic for someone who is a licensed attorney and took an oath of integrity,” Josh wrote on his Instagram story. “Pretty sure making provably false statements to a judge is unethical.”

Christina previously accused Josh of transferring $35,000 from her bank account into his personal account just one day after the divorce filing.

“I would not have asked him to send himself my money the day after I told him we are getting divorced,” Christina stated in the documents obtained by Fox News Digital.

“I understand that at some point this court may require that I pay some spousal support to Josh and reasonable attorney’s fees to his counsel,” she stated. “However, it is my belief that this is a simple case with straightforward accounting over a short period of time, any fees and costs should be minimal.”

“Like all hard-working mothers, my life revolves around my children and my work. It is my understanding that Josh has his own income, and therefore he should not need any spousal support from me.”

Christina and Josh filed their own divorce petitions in July, each citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the dissolution of their marriage. Josh requested spousal support and asked the court to terminate Christina’s ability to receive spousal support from him. Meanwhile, Christina requested the court terminate both of their ability to be awarded spousal support.

“I prefer privacy, especially during something as life-changing as a divorce I did not ask for,” Josh wrote on Instagram after the divorce news broke. “I will not publicly badmouth anyone as people have families, friends and others who respect and love them. Unfortunately, the internet is forever.”

“We are real humans, this is our life and I am not here to entertain people I don’t know with my private matters. Those details will be handled fairly behind closed doors with our respective counsels in due time. Those who know each of us, know who we are.”

Here’s when Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe theme park will open

Epic Universe, Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park, will open to the public on May 22, 2025, the company announced in a press release on Thursday, Oct. 17. 

“This is such a pivotal moment for our destination, and we’re thrilled to welcome guests to Epic Universe next year,” said Karen Irwin, president and COO of Universal Orlando Resort, in a statement emailed to Fox News Digital.

“With the addition of this spectacular new theme park, our guests will embark on an unforgettable vacation experience with a week’s worth of thrills that will be nothing short of epic! Our Universe will never be the same,” Irwin wrote.

Tickets for Epic Universe will go on sale on Oct. 22, 2024.

The new park will have “a new level of theme park immersion” and will have five themed worlds – Celestial Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk and Dark Universe, said the release.

Additionally, there will be three hotels and more than 50 experiences at Epic Universe, including rides, shows and dining. 

Ticket sales to Epic Universe will be in a series of phases in order to “manage the demand that is expected for Epic Universe and to ensure guests who visit Epic Universe and Universal Orlando have an incredible guest experience,” Universal Orlando announced.

During the first phase of ticket sales, guests will only be able to visit Epic Universe as part of a vacation package or multi-day ticket, said the company. 

Guests who purchase a multi-day ticket for three days or more will be able to visit Epic Universe for one of those days.

Other ticket products, including a two-day ticket to Epic Universe, “will go on sale before the park opens,” said the release.

Those who are Universal Orlando Annual passholders will be able to purchase a single-day ticket to Epic Universe on Oct. 24.

For those who experience visual challenges, a variety of apps and features can help you. That’s why we love this question about apps and features that can help visually challenged loved ones:

“I am not tech savvy. I need to know if there is an app that I can download on a phone, that will allow my mother to tell the app, without needing internet services, who she wants to make a phone call to? She’s losing her eyesight and can no longer see the numbers on her phone. She’s 88 years old and doesn’t own a computer and has limited income,” writes “Sheryl” of Westminster, Colorado.

It’s great that you are looking out for your mother’s specific needs. Below are several voice dialing apps and features that can help her make calls without having to see the numbers.

Best apps and features for the visually challenged to make calls

As long as the numbers are already programmed into your phone, you can use some of these apps and features to call out even if you’re visually challenged.

Apps and features for iPhone

For apps and features that work specifically on the iPhone to enhance capabilities for the visually challenged, check out the options below:

1. Siri (iOS): If you have an iPhone, you can use Siri to make phone calls by simply saying, “Hey Siri, call [contact name].” However, if you prefer or if “Hey Siri” isn’t enabled, you can also press and hold the side button (or the Home button on older iPhones) to activate Siri manually. Siri can work offline for basic tasks like making phone calls. You’ll also want to check out how to get your phone to read articles aloud.

SIMPLE IPHONE HACK MAKES READING EVERY APP EASIER

2. Point and Speak feature: With iPhones that have a Lidar sensor and run iOS 17 or later, you can use the “Point and Speak” feature using the steps below:

  • Open the Magnifier app on your iPhone. You can find it in the Utilities folder by searching for it in Spotlight or swiping down from the top right of your screen.
  • Tap the Detect mode icon in the bottom right corner. It looks like a square with a circle inside it.
  • Tap the Point and Speak icon in the bottom left corner. It looks like a hand pointing to three lines.
  • Hold your iPhone about 12 inches away from the text you want to read and point the camera at it.
  • Use your other hand to point at the text you want your iPhone to speak. Your iPhone will highlight the text in yellow and read it aloud.
  • If you don’t hear the speech feedback, click the circular gear icon on the upper left of the screen. Then click Point and Speak and make sure Speech is toggled on. Then click the left arrow Back buttons in the upper left and tap Done.

3. VoiceOver (iOS): This is an accessibility feature built into iPhones that provides spoken feedback to help users navigate their devices. It can be used in conjunction with Siri to make phone calls. Here are the steps:

  • Open Settings: Tap on the Settings app on the home screen.
  • Go to Accessibility: Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  • Enable VoiceOver: Under the Vision section, tap on VoiceOver and then toggle the switch to turn it on.
  • Once VoiceOver is enabled, you can use it to navigate your iPhone with spoken feedback. To make a phone call using Siri with VoiceOver enabled, you can follow these steps: 1) Activate Siri: You can either say “Hey Siri” or press and hold the Home button (or the Side button on newer iPhones) until Siri activates; 2) Give the Command: You can then say, “Call [contact name].”
  • VoiceOver will provide spoken feedback throughout the process, making it easier for you to navigate and confirm actions.

For apps and features that work specifically for an Android to enhance capabilities for the visually challenged, check out the options below:

1. Google Assistant (Android): Similar to Siri, Google Assistant can be used on Android phones to make calls. You can do this by saying “Hey Google” or by holding down the home button on your phone. Once Google Assistant is activated, you can say commands like:

  • “Call [contact name]” to call someone in your contacts
  • “Call [business name]” to call a business
  • “Call [phone number]” to dial a specific number

Additionally, Google Assistant can perform various tasks offline, such as setting reminders, playing music or sending texts. Just give it a try and see how it can make your daily tasks easier.
