New York has reported the state’s first death from Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), a disease that spreads through bites from mosquitoes.

The patient was the first person to contract EEE in New York since 2015, according to a press release issued by the state on Monday.

“Keeping New Yorkers safe is my top priority,” Governor Hochul said in a statement.

WHAT IS EEE, THE MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASE THAT KILLED A NEW HAMPSHIRE MAN?

“Following the first confirmed human case of EEE, my administration took statewide action to help protect communities – and with today’s declaration, we’re making more state resources available to local departments to support their public health response.”

“We’ve been informed this patient has passed away from EEE; we extend our sympathies and our hearts go out to their family.”

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald has declared EEE an imminent threat to public health, which will make more resources available for prevention measures, such as spraying to reduce mosquitoes.

NORTHEASTERN TOWNS ISSUE VOLUNTARY LOCKDOWN TO PREVENT SPREAD OF MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASE

The state has announced plans to expand access to insect repellent in parks and campgrounds, and is encouraging New York residents to take steps to protect against mosquito-borne illness.

What is EEE?

Eastern equine encephalitis is caused by a virus that is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which describes EEE as a “rare but serious disease.”

Only a few cases are reported in the U.S. each year, most in the Eastern or Gulf Coast states, the agency states on its website.

Mosquito lockdown

Some Northeastern towns have enacted voluntary lockdowns due to the rise in EEE cases. (iStock)

Humans and other animals that contract the virus are considered “dead-end hosts,” the CDC states, which means they can’t spread it to mosquitoes that bite them.

“EEE is only spread to humans via a mosquito bite, and cannot be transmitted directly by other humans or horses,” Dr. Kurt Vandock, PhD, a public health expert and VP of strategic growth for Mosquito Squad in Maryland, told Fox News Digital.

The patient was the first person to contract EEE in New York since 2015.

Common symptoms of EEE include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, seizures, behavioral changes and drowsiness.

These usually appear five to 10 days after being bitten.

“Most people have no symptoms; others get only a mild, flu-like illness with fever, headache and sore throat,” Vandock said.

Using insect repellents that contain DEET can help to protect against mosquito bites, experts say. (iStock)

“For people with an infection of the central nervous system, a sudden fever (103º to 106º), severe headache and stiff neck can be followed quickly by seizures and coma.”

The disease can be deadly, resulting in fatalities for 30% of infected people. It can also lead to chronic neurological deficiencies, per the CDC.

ANTHONY FAUCI’S WEST NILE VIRUS DIAGNOSIS: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASE

“The best way to confirm any illness is with an approved and accurate test administered by a medical professional,” said Vandock.

“Eastern equine encephalitis is a serious disease with symptoms occurring fast,” he warned.

“If you live in an area with noted EEE activity and have flu-like symptoms after being bitten by a mosquito, you should seek medical care immediately.”

Concerns of wider infection

In addition to New York, other states that have reported human EEE cases include Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and New Hampshire.

“Anytime life is put at risk by vector-borne disease, we are concerned,” Vandock said.

“As viral loads increase and transmission rates follow this trend, it is a sign that interventions are necessary to help reduce the risk of transmission,” he went on.

Common symptoms of EEE include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, seizures, behavioral changes and drowsiness. (iStock)

“One case of any vector-borne disease is one too many.”

As far as why cases have been more prevalent in northeastern states, Vandock said there’s no simple answer.

“Conducive weather patterns, high population density, the heavy presence of the primary vector and seasonality — coinciding with increased outdoor activity — can create the perfect storm for rapid transmission,” he said.

“One case of any vector-borne disease is one too many.”

The black-tailed mosquito (Culiseta melanura), the primary vector of EEE, can be found in large numbers in the Northeastern United States, according to Vandock.

“It is known to feed mainly on birds, but does not typically feed on humans,” he said. “As a result, the transmission of EEE to humans and horses is generally thought to occur via ‘bridge vectors,’ which contract the virus from infected birds and can then pass the virus on to other hosts.”

The mosquitoes that act as “bridge vectors” can be found in the Northeast areas where transmission is occurring, the expert noted.

The risk of contracting the EEE virus is highest during the summer months — especially toward the end of summer, when people go back outdoors as temperatures cool, Vandock said.

“Anyone who lives or works close to wetlands and swamps is also at an increased risk,” he said.

The Midwest saw a similar outbreak of EEE in 2019 in Michigan, Vandock noted, as many schools canceled after-school activities after numerous fatalities from the disease.

“Current trends suggest that with increasing globalization, population densities, ranges of competent hosts and a favorable climate, the occurrence of EEE and other vector-borne diseases will increase,” he added.

Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News and clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, said he is not concerned by the increase in cases.

“It is still a very slight uptick, and it is confined to mosquito transmission,” he told Fox News Digital, adding that he only anticipates “sparse cases” in other parts of the country.

Treatment and prevention

There is currently no vaccine for Eastern equine encephalitis, and supportive care is the only means of treating symptoms.

Educating the public about the risk, encouraging mosquito repellent use, and spraying to control the mosquito population are the best ways to prevent infection, according to experts.

The state of New York issued the following recommendations for prevention.

  1. Wear long sleeves, pants and socks when outdoors during periods of high mosquito activity, such as dusk or dawn.
  2. Use insect repellents that contain DEET.
  3. Ensure that there are screens in all windows and doors.
  4. Eliminate standing water in outdoor areas where mosquitoes tend to breed.

As Hurricane Helene rapidly intensifies, cruise lines are adjusting sails that are affected by the potential Category 3 hurricane.

Helene is predicted to bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall and dangerous rip currents to Florida’s west coast.

The storm is headed into the Gulf of Mexico, where it is aiming for a destructive landfall along the Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday, FOX Weather reported.

“Pleasure craft are advised to seek safe harbor. Port facilities are advised to review their heavy weather plans and take all necessary precautions to adequately prepare for the expected conditions,” Petty Officer 3rd Class Eric Rodriguez, Coast Guard District Seven, told Fox News Digital in an emailed statement.

The storm is moving toward the north-northwest near 10 mph with an increase in forward speed expected later today through Thursday, bringing the center of Helene across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and to the Florida Big Bend coast, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Some Carnival ships adjusted three sailings this week that were leaving from Tampa and Miami, headed to Cozumel, Mexico. Carnival Horizon canceled a visit to Grand Cayman.

“Ships that were supposed to be going to Cozumel, Mexico are diverting to ports south in Mexico, like Costa Maya or let’s say, even Nassau. So right now, the ships are just diverting, but the arrivals and departures are not being impacted at this point,” Chiron said.

Carnival Paradise was slated to port at Tampa Bay, while Carnival Elations was scheduled to port at Jacksonville, “but officials noted that the return to those ports may be impacted by the storm,” FOX Weather reported.

MSC Cruises, a Swiss-Italian cruise line, has updated three of their sailings amid the hurricane warnings.

“We have notified impacted guests. Our top priority is the safety of our guests and crew, along with minimizing the weather’s impact on our guests’ vacation plans,” said an MSC spokesperson via email.

Chiron says cruise companies are always monitoring the status of hurricanes.

“These storms, the tracks can be projected forecasted so that the ships can avoid areas of inclement weather and go to areas where passengers have a better chance to have some fun,” said Chiron.

For vacationers who have planned travel in the wake of the storm, passengers can cancel their cruise because of an impending storm, he added.

Chiron advised that passengers who are sailing should monitor the updates on cruise lines’ websites.

“The good news is that the cruise lines move their ships, they change itineraries and in cases with ships leaving this weekend, the storm will have passed,” he said.

Amtrak announces ‘Floridian’ train with 2-day route, sparking reactions on social media

0

Amtrak announced a new, temporary route on Monday, causing some social media users to question who would be willing to embark on the full journey.

“Today, we’re proud to announce the launch of the Floridian! This train combines two iconic routes — the Capitol Limited and Silver Star — and will offer traditional dining throughout the full journey,” Amtrak officials wrote in an X post on Monday, which was viewed 12 million times.

A map of the route shows the train beginning its journey in Chicago, heading to Washington, D.C., before continuing south to Miami, Florida. There will be one train in each direction per day, said Amtrak, and the train will consist of Amtrak’s “Viewliner” cars.

TRAVELERS COULD FACE NEW PENALTY FOR EXCEEDING BAGGAGE LIMIT ON TRAINS

The train will make direct round-trips between “Chicago and Miami with intermediate stops in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa”

“The Floridian offers customers an exceptional and sustainable journey to great destinations between Chicago and Miami, providing the amenities and delicious food our guests enjoy when traveling with us,” Eliot Hamlisch, Amtrak’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer, said in a press release from Amtrak.

Previously, riders on the Capitol Limited train route from D.C., to Chicago did not have a traditional dining car. Instead, the train had a less limited “flexible dining” option for its first-class private room passengers, says Amtrak’s website.

The Floridian came about due to the East River Tunnel (ERT) Rehabilitation Project, which will “restore the two tubes that were damaged by Superstorm Sandy,” according to Amtrak.

“The work will modernize the tunnel infrastructure, improving safety, reliability and security and bring the systems to a state of good repair,” said Amtrak.

Jim Mathews, president and CEO of the Rail Passengers Association, located in D.C., said the Floridian is an “innovative solution to keeping passengers moving” during the repair.

The return of a train route connecting the Midwest to Florida has been a longtime dream of train enthusiasts, Mathews said in Amtrak’s release.

“We’re thrilled that a new generation of American passengers will be able to experience this service for themselves,” said Mathews.

“Midwesterners will still be driving the 20 hours,” said the X account “Midwest vs. Everybody.”

“For folks out there who have flown from Miami to Chicago and thought ‘I wish this took 10 times longer,’ check it out,” said another X user, who followed up with “I like trains too, guys. Please shut up.”

“I prefer taking a train from Chicago to Miami because it is more expensive, takes longer AND is hard to sleep on,” said another X user.

“I’d love to not fly. I hate airports, flying, turbulence, etc. But this, for a family of 4, one way… is embarrassing,” said another X user, showing a price of $2,193.

The train ride will make several stops and last about 47 hours.

Other X users appeared to have a positive take on the announcement.

“Ya know, it still sounds more pleasant than dealing with flying though,” one man wrote.

“Seems like a cool little trip to take over week or so,” another user posted.

Top 4 reasons you might still need VPN with cellular service

0

Using a virtual private network (VPN) on cellular networks secures your digital life, ensuring privacy and freedom.

Ever wondered if you’re truly safe when browsing on your phone in public? Sure, we’ve all heard the horror stories about public Wi-Fi. But what about when you’re using your cellular data? Is that ironclad protection? And here’s the question: Do you still need to use a VPN?

Believe it or not, while your cellular network is a fortress compared to the wild west of public Wi-Fi, it’s not an impenetrable one. There are still gaps in the armor where dangers can seep through. So, let’s discuss the four top reasons why you might still need VPN even if you’re using your cellular network.

Top 4 reasons you might still need VPN with cellular service

Here are the top 4 reasons that a VPN will still protect you better than just relying on your cellular service provider.

1. Protect your privacy

Using a VPN (virtual private network) enhances your online privacy by encrypting your internet connection. This encryption makes it challenging for websites and other entities to track your online activities. However, it’s important to note that while a VPN obscures the specific content of your internet traffic, your cellular service provider can still see the overall data usage associated with your account.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE US NEWS

Cellular service providers have the ability to monitor and analyze your data usage patterns. They can collect various types of metadata, such as your location, the times you connect and the total amount of data consumed. Although mobile network encryption offers some level of privacy, it does not prevent providers from accessing this information.

2. When cellular service is unavailable, VPN can still keep you safe

When cellular service is unavailable, a VPN can still keep you safe. In areas where cellular service is weak or nonexistent, you may be forced to use public Wi-Fi, which is notoriously insecure. Public networks often lack strong encryption, making it easy for cybercriminals to intercept your data.

While a VPN does not provide safety when cellular service is unavailable, it does offer security when you switch to insecure networks like public Wi-Fi. A VPN creates a secure, encrypted tunnel for your internet traffic, safeguarding your information even when connected to vulnerable public Wi-Fi networks.

3. Bypassing censorship

Internet censorship varies by country, with some governments restricting access to certain websites and services. When traveling to such locations, a VPN can help circumvent these restrictions by routing your connection through servers in countries with more open internet policies, allowing you to access the global internet without censorship.

4. Less geo-targeting restrictions

Geo-targeting can restrict access to content based on your physical location, such as streaming services, news websites and online marketplaces. A VPN allows you to choose a server in a different location, effectively changing your IP address and bypassing geo-restrictions, giving you access to a broader range of content regardless of your actual location.

Unmatched privacy and security on cellular networks

Using a VPN in conjunction with cellular service remains a critical strategy for enhancing privacy, security and freedom on the internet. For the best VPN software, see my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

HOW TO SECURE YOUR HOT SPOT PRIVACY AND SECURITY WITH A VPN

Kurt’s key takeaways

It’s clear that the digital world is brimming with unseen risks, even when we feel secure in the bubble of our cellular networks. The notion that our mobile data is a digital shield is comforting, yet it’s not without its vulnerabilities. Whether it’s the unsettling thought of being tracked by service providers, the dread of connecting to a dubious public Wi-Fi or the frustration of hitting digital walls while traveling, a VPN is a good tool to unlock the full potential of the internet, unhindered by geographical barriers or censorship. In essence, integrating a VPN with your cellular service isn’t just about bolstering security. It’s about reclaiming your right to privacy and unrestricted access to information.

One in five polled Americans say they “rarely or never” wake up feeling well-rested — and a new survey has identified the factors keeping sleep at bay.

Stress in general was labeled as the biggest culprit, negatively impacting 74% of Americans’ sleep routines, according to the survey by U.S. News & World Report.

“More specifically, we gathered data on the bedtime worries keeping Americans awake at night,” Julia Forbes, sleep editor at U.S. News 360 Reviews, told Fox News Digital.

BEST AND WORST BEDTIMES FOR VARIOUS GENERATIONS

Based on the survey of 1,200 American adults, these were the biggest concerns that kept Americans from drifting off in 2023.

Top 5 worries at bedtime

1. Inflation

2. COVID-19

3. Gun violence in America

4. Climate change

5. 2024 Presidential election

The 2023 list of worries was almost identical to 2022, with the Russia-Ukraine war taking the last spot.

The cost of living woes are not surprising, according to Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist in Manhattan and Washington, D.C., and author of the book “Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days.”

SLEEPING LONGER ON WEEKENDS COULD LOWER HEART DISEASE RISK BY 20%, STUDY FINDS

“This is often top of mind for people, including many of my patients,” Alpert, who was not involved in the survey, told Fox News Digital.

“As the prices of goods and services continue to increase, so do people’s worries about making ends meet.”

The psychotherapist also commented on climate change making the list.

“People who worry about climate, some might argue, don’t have more pressing concerns, such as how to pay their bills or if their child might be involved in a school shooting,” Alpert said.

“As the prices of goods and services continue to increase, so do people’s worries about making ends meet.”

“My guess is that the climate change worriers might inhabit more blue than red states, and politics is at play here.”

Dr. Chris Mosunic, chief clinical officer at Calm in San Francisco, said it’s “no surprise” that the election is one of the top worries keeping Americans up at night.

SLEEP AND TRAVEL DON’T ALWAYS MIX: HERE ARE 7 TIPS TO HELP YOU REST ON THE ROAD

“When it comes to getting a good night’s rest, especially in moments of heightened anxiety like the election, practicing healthy habits is crucial to winding down at night,” he told Fox News Digital.

Alpert agreed that the election continues to be a source of stress for his patients, as they have a difficult time shutting it off at night.

Dr. Chris Winter, a neurologist and sleep medicine specialist with Mattress Firm in Houston, Texas, said that inconsistent schedules has a rightful spot at the top of the list.

“More and more research is coming out that shows even when sleep quality is sound and sleep amounts are adequate, inconsistency of sleep timing can lead to a large range of negative health consequences — heart disease, weight gain, cognitive decline and even cancer,” Winter, who also was not involved in the survey, told Fox News Digital.

The screen time issue is easily solved, he noted — “just leave your phone in the kitchen.”

Nearly 90% of adults and 75% of children keep at least one electronic device in their bedrooms, according to a poll taken by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF).

“Inconsistency of sleep timing can lead to a large range of negative health consequences.”

Staying up all night deserves to be higher on the list, according to Winter.

“It’s a terrible situation to be in from a sleep, health and safety perspective,” he said.

The general recommendation is for adults between 18 and 64 years of age to get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night, according to the NSF.

Rare mosaic revealing earliest ‘physical evidence’ of Christianity now on display at Museum of the Bible

The Museum of the Bible in the nation’s capital has opened a new exhibit in partnership with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), giving visitors a deeper understanding of the spread of early Christianity in the Holy Land.

Titled “The Megiddo Mosaic: Foundations of Faith,” the exhibit showcases IAA’s archaeological find, dating back to the third century, on display for the first time since it was found.

The mosaic formed part of the floor of the oldest site of Christian worship ever to be discovered, according to officials with the Museum of the Bible (MOB).

“The mosaic presents groundbreaking physical evidence of the practices and beliefs of early Christians, including the first archaeological instance of the phrase, ‘God Jesus Christ,’” Alegre Savariego, curator of the exhibition on behalf of the IAA, said in the release.

“The mosaic underscores the crucial role of women in the early church by the fact that 5 women are mentioned in it by name. Truly, the mosaic presents a wealth of new data for church historians, like the Dead Sea Scrolls did for Bible scholars,” Duke said, according to the release.

Warm Up The TV Viewing Experience: The Advantages of Combining a TV Lift Cabinet with an Electric Fireplace 67

The combination of an electric fireplace with a TV lift cabinet creates a seamless integration between two essential elements in any modern living space – entertainment and  warmth. The TV lift cabinet provides a stylish storage solution for the TV while keeping  it hidden when not in use.

Boca Raton, Florida, September 25, 2024, In today’s world of home design, merging functionality with aesthetics is key to creating a cozy retreat that caters to both leisure and luxury. The perfect pairing is a sleek TV lift cabinet combined with the serene allure of an electric fireplace. Not only does this dynamic duo elevate any entertainment space (quite literally!), but it also enhances ambiance and efficiency in ways many folks might never have considered.

TV lift cabinets are sleek and functional pieces of furniture that can house the television set and keep it hidden when not in use. With the press of a button, the TV magically appears from inside the cabinet without taking up any extra floor space. It eliminates the need for bulky TV stands or wall mounts and provides a clean and clutter-free look to one’s room.

Electric fireplaces, on the other hand, have gained immense popularity over recent years for their realistic flame effects and hassle-free operation. These fireplaces use electricity to produce heat through coils or infrared mechanisms rather than burning wood or gas. They offer all the coziness of a traditional fireplace without any of its maintenance or safety concerns.

One of the biggest advantages of combining a TV lift cabinet with an electric fireplace is its space-saving feature. With both elements neatly tucked into one unit, homeowners can free up precious floor space in their living room or entertainment area. This is especially convenient for smaller spaces where every inch counts. They no longer have to deal with separate bulky furniture pieces taking up unnecessary room.

Also, having a TV lift cabinet paired with an electric fireplace ensures seamless integration and organization for all one’s media devices. The cabinet provides ample storage space for cable boxes, gaming consoles, and other accessories while keeping wires and cords hidden from view. This creates a clutter-free and organized setup, avoiding tangled cords and messy configurations.

Investing in this winning combination adds value to the living space as well as quality to daily life. Whether its having family movie nights gathered around a beautiful fireplace or enjoying quiet evenings reading by its warm glow – this duo creates lasting memories for you and loved ones. It truly is the perfect balance of functionality and inviting ambiance.
