A new trend dubbed “scream tourism” by travel experts has thrill seekers searching for destinations that illicit a frightening feel.

Rob DelliBovi, CEO of RDB Hospitality Group and based in New York, told Fox News via email that scream tourism has always been a travel trend during Halloween time, but the tourism movement now encompasses the entire year.

“This is a new fad created by Halloween aficionados, who turned the holiday into a travel trend,” he said.

DelliBovi said he’s seen an increase in scream tourism with adults having high interest.

“It’s less ‘family fun’ and more grown-ups wanting a legitimately scary experience, even crossing over to travel that surrounds a place where there might’ve been a trendy death story,” he added. 

Destinations such as “haunted” hotels, murder scenes and ghost tours attract tourists.

America Haunts, a tourism company that owns 20 haunted attractions nationwide, sees visitors who seek chilling travel experiences.

“The Queen of Haunts” at America Haunts, Amber Arnett Bequeaith, agreed that scream tourism is on the rise.

“The surge in scream tourism is evident through the uptick in airline travel and out-of-state ticket sales at our attractions,” Bequeaith told Fox News Digital via email.

America Haunts has haunted houses in California, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah.

“On the more fun side, a place like Halloween Horror Nights in Universal Studios is very successful. Theme parks and ‘created’ scary experiences are a big part of this,” DelliBovi said.

He went on, “… for the more hardcore, the actual trend would be a trip to Salem, Massachusetts – where the witch trials took place, or a famous cemetery that has a well-known name from the genre.”

Last year, Salem saw a record 1.2 million visitors in the five weeks leading up to Halloween, a local Patch newspaper reported.

The Borden House, home of Lizzie Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts, is an operating bed and breakfast attracting true crime aficionados and ghost hunters.

Borden’s father and step-mother were killed at the home more than 130 years ago, which also serves as a museum. Borden was accused and acquitted of the slayings.

The summer and the Halloween seasons are typically the busiest at the Lizzie Borden House, with October 2022 having roughly 6,000 visitors, Fox News Digital reported.

“[It’s] great news for travel that ‘trend travel’ is back – it’s another sign that COVID-time (travel-wise) is a thing of our past. This type of travel is secondary to what we’re used to, so it means even the spooky are out and about,” DellBovi said.

The Scottish Highlands is the latest popular destination that might soon have a tourist tax.

In May, Members of the Scottish Parliament passed legislation that allows local authorities in Scotland the ability to introduce a tourist tax on visitors staying in overnight accommodation.

The Highland Council will be the next agency to decide what a tourist tax would look like in its region.

In 2023, 794,000 Americans visited Scotland, according to visitscotland.org.

The Highland Council has “agreed to the principle of implementing a visitor levy in Highland as a means of securing investment for the sector and helping Highland become more resilient and sustainable.”

Highland had nearly 7 million visitors in 2022, according to the government agency’s site.

Councilor Ken Gowans noted in the “Sustainable Tourism Strategy” proposal that the tourism industry has seen incredible growth.

“Yet, welcoming so many visitors puts huge pressure on certain areas and our basic infrastructure and services and requires significant investment and strong partnership working,” he said.

Gowans added, “We need to consider the opportunities that will be made possible with the introduction of the Visitor Levy, and also the need for us all to [maximize] our energy and resources, to drive positive change that will safeguard this growing sector for the future.”

Officials in Venice, Italy, initiated a pilot program to charge day-trippers an entry fee to reduce the influx on peak days, while officials in Greece are planning to impose a tax for cruise ship visitors who are traveling to Mykonos, Fox News Digital reported.

A French daredevil has turned his childhood dreams into reality by “soaring” from mountain cliffs — on a flying carpet.

Freddy Montigny, 44, has spent years honing his skills in extreme sports to live out a dream of becoming a real-life Aladdin, according to SWNS, the British news service. 

He developed a unique stunt by using expertise gained from paragliding, skydiving and hang-gliding over the years — all of which gave him the control he needed, he said, to “fly” on a carpet.

He can be seen falling rapidly to 1,600 meters while “riding” a carpet.

Montigny of Choranche, France said, “I’ve always wondered what part of the myths and legends we were told as kids was true,” as SWNS reported.

He said he started “paragliding at 25, skydiving at 30, and hang-gliding at 35.” 

These activities, he said, “helped me master the art of carpet flying.”

He called the parachute his “main safety net.” 

Fox News Digital reached out to Montigny for further comment.

In his social media postings, Montigny has stressed “linking childhood dreams to adult reality.”

He has also noted his “years of experience,” including practice at Vercors Massif — a range in France consisting of rugged plateaus and mountains — and a trusty parachute.

He told SWNS, “If anything goes wrong, I just release the carpet and open it. With the height I’m jumping from, I have plenty of time to correct any mistakes.”

He also said, “With this flying carpet, I’ve learned that while you can’t fly at any speed or to any destination, it’s still an amazing way to defy reality.”

He said he “wanted to play with reality and use the skills I’ve learned in life to chase this dream.”

On his YouTube channel in mid-August this summer, Montigny showed off what he called “the fastest way to go fishing or [to] work.”

He went on, “Remember the little child playing in the wind or simulating the plane with his jacket open … And now … it’s real,” he wrote, wearing what appeared to be a modified raincoat.
