‘Scream tourism’ trend has Halloween fans and travelers flocking to creepy spots all year round

0

A new trend dubbed “scream tourism” by travel experts has thrill seekers searching for destinations that illicit a frightening feel.

Rob DelliBovi, CEO of RDB Hospitality Group and based in New York, told Fox News via email that scream tourism has always been a travel trend during Halloween time, but the tourism movement now encompasses the entire year.

“This is a new fad created by Halloween aficionados, who turned the holiday into a travel trend,” he said.

DelliBovi said he’s seen an increase in scream tourism with adults having high interest.

“It’s less ‘family fun’ and more grown-ups wanting a legitimately scary experience, even crossing over to travel that surrounds a place where there might’ve been a trendy death story,” he added.

Destinations such as “haunted” hotels, murder scenes and ghost tours attract tourists.

America Haunts, a tourism company that owns 20 haunted attractions nationwide, sees visitors who seek chilling travel experiences.

“The Queen of Haunts” at America Haunts, Amber Arnett Bequeaith, agreed that scream tourism is on the rise.

“The surge in scream tourism is evident through the uptick in airline travel and out-of-state ticket sales at our attractions,” Bequeaith told Fox News Digital via email.

“On the more fun side, a place like Halloween Horror Nights in Universal Studios is very successful. Theme parks and ‘created’ scary experiences are a big part of this,” DelliBovi said.

He went on, “… for the more hardcore, the actual trend would be a trip to Salem, Massachusetts – where the witch trials took place, or a famous cemetery that has a well-known name from the genre.”

Last year, Salem saw a record 1.2 million visitors in the five weeks leading up to Halloween, a local Patch newspaper reported.

The summer and the Halloween seasons are typically the busiest at the Lizzie Borden House, with October 2022 having roughly 6,000 visitors, Fox News Digital reported.

“[It’s] great news for travel that ‘trend travel’ is back – it’s another sign that COVID-time (travel-wise) is a thing of our past. This type of travel is secondary to what we’re used to, so it means even the spooky are out and about,” DellBovi said.

Amid growing UK health care crisis, nearly 8 million patients are waiting for care

0

Experts are warning of a growing health care crisis in England, as millions of U.K. residents are waiting for medical attention.

As of July 2024, 7.62 million patients were on the waiting list for care, with 6.39 million in need of specific medical treatment, according to the latest Referral to Treatment (RTT) data from the National Health Service (NHS), England’s publicly funded health care system.

The average wait time for treatment is 14 weeks, but more than three million patients have been waiting for over 18 weeks — and it’s been more than a year for nearly 300,000 of them.

FATHER CREATED A DRUG TO SAVE HIS SON FROM A RARE DISEASE, NOW OTHER FAMILIES ARE DESPERATE TO GET IT

Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News and clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, appeared on “Fox & Friends” to share his concerns about the situation.

“This is a huge warning for us,” he said.

As of July 2024, 7.62 million U.K. patients were on the waiting list for care, with 6.39 million in need of specific medical treatment. (iStock)

“The National Health Service, which started in 1948 with the great idea to take care of everyone in England, is broken,” he went on.

MOTHER FRANTIC TO SAVE CLINICAL TRIAL THAT COULD CURE HER DAUGHTER: ‘THE TREATMENT IS SITTING IN A FRIDGE’

“We’re talking about nearly eight million people there who are waiting for health care … many more than 18 weeks. How could you wait 18 weeks if you’re having a heart problem or you have an infection?”

Although the problem is not as extreme in the U.S., Siegel warned that it can be a struggle to get timely care stateside.

“Even here … 26% of the people in the U.S. are waiting more than two months for their health care already,” he told Fox News.

“Even people who are getting it from their employers are waiting.”

As far as what is causing the delay in care, Siegel said, “The first problem is that Kamala Harris and others are talking about coverage all the time — but coverage doesn’t mean care.”

“You’ve got your coverage, you’ve got your insurance, maybe you’ve got public insurance — almost 50% of the U.S. already has Medicare or Medicaid — but do you have a doctor? Do you have access to the care you need? That’s the question, and that’s [being] obscured.”

Dr. Marc Siegel

“The National Health Service, which started in 1948 with the great idea to take care of everyone in England, is broken,” said Dr. Marc Siegel. (Fox News)

Siegel added, “We’re heading toward a time of personalized solutions, which are very exciting, but they’re expensive.”

The doctor also discussed the potential problem of illegal immigrants using medical services, which could delay American citizens from seeing their doctors.

“Illegal migrants homeless on the streets, with illnesses that are spreading, flooding the emergency rooms — that’s going to be a greater and greater problem, whether you give them health insurance or not,” Siegel said.

“But if you give them health insurance, that breaks the bank.”

UK PM Keir Starmer in hot water for accepting freebies

0

Despite being in office less than three months, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has already raised eyebrows for accepting donations in the form of clothes and other gifts from a wealthy businessman.

The Labour Party leader, who won power in a landslide victory on a promise to restore trust in politics, has denied any wrongdoing over thousands of pounds worth of clothes and eyeglasses paid for by Waheed Alli, a media entrepreneur and longtime donor to the party.

The headache for Starmer was compounded after a BBC report disclosed his chief of staff, Sue Gray, is paid 170,000 pounds, or $225,000, a year, which is about 3,000 pounds more than the prime minister’s salary.

A former senior civil servant, Gray is best known for leading an investigation into lockdown-breaching parties in government buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

UK GOVERNMENT ACCUSED OF CRACKING DOWN ON FREE SPEECH: ‘THINK BEFORE YOU POST’

Gray’s findings helped take down Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and her subsequent move to work for Starmer led the Conservatives to claim the “partygate” probe was politically biased – something Gray has denied.

The Labour Party, meanwhile, has accused the Conservatives of whipping up a controversy to tarnish the government.

Lawmakers can accept gifts but must declare donations and extra-parliamentary income within 28 days — a deadline Starmer missed. He blamed the delay on his staff seeking advice on exactly what needed to be declared.

“I’m very consistent with following the rules,” Starmer said this week, rejecting suggestions that prime ministers should get a wardrobe budget.

Starmer dismissed claims of dissent among his staff about Gray and her salary, insisting he’s “completely in control.”

“I’m focused and every day the message from me to the team is exactly the same, which is we have to deliver,” he told the BBC on Thursday. “We were elected on a big mandate to deliver change, I am determined that we are going to do that.”

The scale of the freebies accepted by Starmer and his wife, Victoria, has perplexed even his supporters. Sky News reported that Starmer has declared “gifts, benefits and hospitality” worth more than 100,000 pounds since December 2019, more than any other lawmaker.

The donations include thousands of pounds’ worth of tickets for Premier League games involving the prime minister’s beloved soccer team, Arsenal.

After controversy erupted, the Labour Party said Starmer won’t accept any more free outfits.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who also accepted donations to pay for clothing, told the BBC: “I get that people are angry [but] donations for gifts and hospitality and monetary donations have been a feature of our politics for a very long time.”

“People can look it up and see what people have had donations for, and the transparency is really important,” Rayner said.

Labour leaders are hoping that an annual four-day conference, which started on Sunday, will inject some badly needed morale for the party.

Hot travel spot could see new tourist tax as number of travelers increases

The Scottish Highlands is the latest popular destination that might soon have a tourist tax.

In May, Members of the Scottish Parliament passed legislation that allows local authorities in Scotland the ability to introduce a tourist tax on visitors staying in overnight accommodation.

The Highland Council will be the next agency to decide what a tourist tax would look like in its region.

“Yet, welcoming so many visitors puts huge pressure on certain areas and our basic infrastructure and services and requires significant investment and strong partnership working,” he said.

Nasal spray flu vaccine gets FDA approval for home use: ‘A good alternative’

0

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved FluMist — the nasal spray flu vaccine — for home use by a patient or adult caregiver, the agency announced.

FluMist has been in use for a couple of decades, but this is the first time a vaccine for influenza has been approved for self-administration without a health care provider.

“Today’s approval of the first influenza vaccine for self- or caregiver-administration provides a new option for receiving a safe and effective seasonal influenza vaccine, potentially with greater convenience, flexibility and accessibility for individuals and families,” said Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in the Sept. 20 announcement.

FLU SHOT SCHEDULING: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GET THE VACCINE?

The home version of FluMist will be available starting next year, according to Fox News medical contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a nasal spray flu vaccine for home use by a patient or adult caregiver. (iStock)

Saphier appeared on “Fox and Friends” to discuss how the home version of FluMist will make it easier for people to get the vaccine.

“A lot of people don’t get the flu shot because of the logistics of going to the doctor’s office or the pharmacy, or because of severe needle phobia,” she said.

“This is a good alternative for those people — especially because over the last two decades, [FluMist] has shown just about the same efficacy as the traditional vaccines.”

‘VACCINE FATIGUE’ BLAMED AS ROUGHLY HALF OF PEOPLE IN US WILL SKIP COVID AND FLU SHOTS THIS YEAR

Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News and clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, stated that the FluMist vaccine is “particularly useful” in children who may have needle phobias.

“I am glad it is being made available over the counter beginning next year,” he told Fox News Digital.

“It can help to overcome vaccine non-compliance.”

“A lot of people don’t get the flu shot because of the logistics of going to the doctor’s office or the pharmacy, or because of severe needle phobia.”

It is still important for doctors to be “kept in the loop,” Siegel added.

“It is a live virus vaccine, and so it should not be given to those who are immunocompromised or to pregnant women.”

Sick woman

Each year between 2010 and 2023, the flu has caused between 9.3 million and 41 million illnesses, 100,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations, and 4,900 to 51,000 deaths, according to the CDC. (iStock)

FluMist is approved to protect against influenza virus subtypes A and B in people 2 through 49 years of age, according to the FDA’s website.

It was first approved in 2003 for people ages 5 through 49, and was extended to include children ages 2 through 5 in 2007.

The most common side effects of FluMist include fever in children between 2 and 6, runny nose and nasal congestion in people aged 2 through 49, and sore throat in adults aged 18 through 49, the FDA noted.

The home nasal vaccine could help to reduce vaccine “non-compliance,” a doctor said. (iStock)

A prescription will be required to obtain the home version of FluMist, which will be shipped directly from a third-party online pharmacy to eligible patients, the FDA stated.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months and older is advised to get vaccinated against influenza.

Last year’s vaccine had an efficacy of a little less than 50% in terms of keeping people out of the doctor’s office and the hospital, according to Saphier.

“Does that mean that everyone needs to go get one? That’s really up to the individual,” she said, adding that people should talk to their doctor, especially if they are high-risk.

In the FDA’s announcement, Marks stated that getting annual vaccinations is the best way to prevent influenza, “which causes illness in a substantial proportion of the U.S. population every year and may result in serious complications, including hospitalization and death.”

A French daredevil has turned his childhood dreams into reality by “soaring” from mountain cliffs — on a flying carpet.

Freddy Montigny, 44, has spent years honing his skills in extreme sports to live out a dream of becoming a real-life Aladdin, according to SWNS, the British news service.

He developed a unique stunt by using expertise gained from paragliding, skydiving and hang-gliding over the years — all of which gave him the control he needed, he said, to “fly” on a carpet.

Montigny of Choranche, France said, “I’ve always wondered what part of the myths and legends we were told as kids was true,” as SWNS reported.

He said he started “paragliding at 25, skydiving at 30, and hang-gliding at 35.”

These activities, he said, “helped me master the art of carpet flying.”

He called the parachute his “main safety net.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Montigny for further comment.

In his social media postings, Montigny has stressed “linking childhood dreams to adult reality.”

He has also noted his “years of experience,” including practice at Vercors Massif — a range in France consisting of rugged plateaus and mountains — and a trusty parachute.

“iThrive is more than an innovative business solution,” added George Vasu, Founder, CEO. “It is part of a larger and more profound movement to make sharing, collaboration and performance between its members more valuable than competition while helping the global workforce create income security where there is no job security.”
