Wastewater samples have shown elevated levels of a respiratory virus that has been linked to paralysis in some children, sparking concerns about potentially rising cases in the U.S., according to a report from WastewaterSCAN.

The virus, enterovirus D68, is one of “100 non-polio enteroviruses,” according to Cleveland Clinic’s website.

While the virus itself is common, neurological complications are “relatively rare,” the clinic noted.

LATEST COVID VARIANT, XEC, HAS SPREAD TO HALF OF US STATES, REPORTS SAY

“It circulates in the summer, like all its other enteroviral cousins, but this one causes a specific problem,” Dr. Sharon Nachman, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in New York, told Fox News Digital.

“It affects the nerves and can cause paralysis across the spinal cord.”

The virus typically has “on and off years,” Nachman said, noting that this looks to be an “on year” based on recent wastewater data.

What to know about wastewater data

WastewaterSCAN, a Stanford University-based nonprofit in partnership with Emory University, monitors nationwide samples of wastewater sewage for infectious diseases to help alert public health officials, according to its website.

The organization also contributes its data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC)’s National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS).

RACCOON ROUNDWORM INFECTIONS REPORTED IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY, HEALTH OFFICIALS WARN

Wastewater samples can point to early warning signs of infectious diseases in a community, even before symptoms are detected, the CDC noted.

“Wastewater is a good surrogate marker for whether a virus is circulating in the environment,” Nachman told Fox News Digital.

“So the take-home message is that this virus is circulating.”

As of Sept. 21, WastewaterSCAN’s data showed that levels of enterovirus D68 in sewage were classified as “moderate,” with 306 out of 400 samples testing positive within the last 10 days.

Symptoms and complications

In most people, the infection causes only mild cold-like symptoms, such as runny or stuffy nose, cough, fever, body aches and sore throat, according to infectious disease experts.

In rare cases, it has been linked to severe respiratory symptoms and a nervous system disorder called acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).

SUPERBUGS DUE TO ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE COULD KILL 39 MILLION PEOPLE BY 2050, LARGE STUDY FINDS

AFM can occur when the EV-D68 virus affects the nervous system, causing muscle weakness in the arms and legs, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids and even paralysis, according to the CDC.

Dr. Aaron Glatt, chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, New York, described AFM as “a rare but potentially very serious illness that can mimic polio and can cripple children.”

“Wastewater is a good surrogate marker for whether a virus is circulating in the environment.”

In most cases, the paralysis is temporary and can be treated with physical therapy to address the weakness.

“There are very few cases of permanent paralysis,” Nachman told Fox News Digital.

Individuals most at risk for developing symptoms related to EV-D68 include infants, children and teenagers, the CDC noted.

Children with asthma also have a higher risk of severe illness.

In the U.S., EV-D68 tends to peak during the summer and fall months, the CDC noted.

Prevention and treatment

The virus typically spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing and touching contaminated surfaces, according to experts.

Children should avoid sharing drinks, cups and utensils to help prevent potential spread, Nachman advised.

Other prevention methods include disinfecting commonly touched surfaces, following proper hand-washing hygiene and keeping kids home when they are sick, Cleveland Clinic stated.

If a child complains that they are feeling weakness in their legs or having trouble walking, that could be a warning sign of EV-D68, Nachman said.

Boy at doctor

Parents should contact a pediatrician if they notice symptoms of the virus in children, experts recommend. (iStock)

Parents should contact a pediatrician if they notice these symptoms.

“Your child’s pediatrician is an expert on your child, and that’s a better choice than just an urgent care walk-in center who doesn’t know them,” Nachman said.

Those experiencing severe symptoms, including difficulty breathing, confusion, slurred speech, weakness or paralysis, should seek emergency medical treatment.

A blood test, lumbar puncture (spinal tap) or MRI may be required to confirm the diagnosis after ruling out the flu and COVID, per Cleveland Clinic.

Boy physical therapy

Treatment typically includes supportive care for symptoms and physical therapy if weakness occurs, according to experts. (iStock)

No vaccine is currently available for enterovirus D68, and there is no specific antiviral medication to treat it.

When contacted by Fox News Digital, a CDC representative said the agency has not yet issued a statement or HAN (health alert network) regarding EV-D68.

Travel in time to 5 destinations that salute battles and war heroes right here at home

0

Thoughts of American battlefield heroes might conjure up images of overseas valor in service of oppressed and conquered people around the world.

Capt. John Paul Jones became a legend for the U.S. Navy by leading the Bonhomme Richard to an improbable victory over HMS Serapis off the coast of England during the American Revolution.

The American Expeditionary forged an end to World War I fighting in Western Europe.

The Marines gave America its most heroically memorable image hoisting Old Glory over Iwo Jima in the far reaches of the Pacfiic Ocean in the last months of World War II.

But you don’t need to travel overseas to walk in the footsteps of America’s battlefield heroes or ponder the sacrifice of those who gave their lives here in the United States.

Here’s a look at five U.S. travel destinations that help tell the story of the cost of freedom.

Hawaii — Pearl Harbor

World War II history lives in infamy in the heart of Honolulu, where Pearl Harbor remains a powerful testament to American tragedy and resolve.

USS Arizona Memorial

Visits are highlighted by the haunting memorial to the USS Arizona, which exploded catastrophically Dec. 7, 1941, and which serves as a tomb for 1,102 sailors killed in the Sunday morning attack.

HAWAII’S HIDDEN TREASURES INCLUDE THESE HISTORIC WAR MONUMENTS IN OAHU

Oil still leaks from the ship today, as if the Arizona is still shedding tears, observers have noted. Other attractions include Hickam Field, where U.S. aircraft were destroyed on the ground before they had a chance to fight back, and the USS Missouri.

The mighty battleship was not at Pearl Harbor during the attack, but it floats as a testament to American resolve and triumph.

Japan signed the documents of surrender ending World War II aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945, less than four years after the Pearl Harbor attack.

Louisiana — Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

A sprawling landscape celebrates one of the planet’s unique ecologies and cultures, along with dramatic American history.

The park is located in the heart of bayou country near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Highlights include Chalmette Battlefield, where Andrew Jackson led a highly diverse Army of American people to victory over the British at the end of the War of 1812; and the Chalmette National Cemetery, housing the remains of veterans of that battle, the Civil War and other conflicts.

Barataria Preserve, a haunting 26,000-acre wilderness of hardwood forests and bayous, offers a chance to observe alligators and other swamp creatures in their natural habitat.

Maryland — Annapolis

There may be no better place to celebrate the nation’s ties to the seas than in Maryland’s capital, also briefly the nation’s capital in 1783, when the Treaty of Paris was signed, ending the American Revolution.

Annapolis is home to the U.S. Naval Academy and known as the “Sailing Capital of the United States.” Its Colonial-era downtown is a great place to explore and enjoy Maryland’s signature oysters and crabs at local hot spots such as Middleton’s or Cantler’s.

The Civil War Siege of Vicksburg ended after six weeks with a victory by Ulysses S. Grant’s Union troops July 4, 1863, the day after federal forces repelled Pickett’s Charge to claim victory 1,000 miles to the northeast in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Vicksburg’s haunting park today is highlighted by some 1,400 memorials and markers, representing all 32 states that sent men to fight there, and two major cemeteries of both Confederate and Union war dead.

The national park’s attractions also include the USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum, featuring the ironclad Union vessel that patrolled the Mississippi River. Success at Vicksburg helped catapult Grant to the head of the Union army the following year and, eventually, the presidency.

But his ruthless siege nearly starved the people of Vicksburg. The city would not celebrate the Fourth of July again until 1947 during a visit and speech by World War II hero Gen. Dwight Eisenhower.

Pennsylvania — Gettysburg National Military Park

The stunning human cost of preserving the nation is seen in this sprawling battlefield in rural south-central Pennsylvania.

Gettysburg pitted about 160,000 men in a pitched three-day battle that turned the tide of the Civil War in favor of the Union. Some 50,000 soldiers of both sides were killed or wounded. It remains the largest battle in North American history.

63 days: Kamala Harris has yet to do formal press conference since emerging as Democratic nominee

0

Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 63 days as the presumptive, and now, official Democratic nominee for president without holding an official press conference.

Under pressure to sit down for a substantive interview after weeks of stonewalling, Harris finally ended her interview drought last month in Georgia when she was joined by running mate Tim Walz for a pre-taped piece with CNN’s Dana Bash that was a far cry from a traditional press conference. She’s done more interviews since, including this week with the National Association of Black Journalists, and she made time to hang out with supporter Oprah Winfrey on Thursday at a star-studded campaign event.

Trump held his third news conference since the beginning of August earlier this month in California, taking the opportunity to roast his opponent’s home state and hold forth on a number of topics, including crime, immigration and inflation.

Harris has stepped up her interviews in recent weeks, including doing radio hits and a solo sit-down with a Philadelphia TV station last week.

But as for when she’ll actually do a formal press conference as a candidate, that day may never come, at least while she’s still a candidate.

Conservative Radio Libre host Jorge Bonilla feels Harris should do a press conference but said it’s almost “irrelevant” because she continues to get a pass.

HARRIS DODGES QUESTION ON LOWERING PRICES BY DESCRIBING ‘MIDDLE-CLASS’ ROOTS: NEIGHBORS ‘PROUD OF THEIR LAWN’

“She is highly unlikely to do a press conference because the media have enabled and encouraged her ‘plexiglass basement’ strategy, wherein she preserves the illusion of being out there while remaining wholly inaccessible to the press and therefore unaccountable,” Bonilla told Fox News Digital.

Trump has sought to highlight the contrast in media availability between the two, sitting for several lengthy interviews in recent weeks, in addition to his three news conferences.

In her interview on Friday in Philadelphia, her answer citing her middle-class upbringing when asked about specifics of her economic policy drew sharp criticism.

BARBARA WALTERS WOULD EXPECT KAMALA HARRIS TO DO INTERVIEWS, AUTHOR SAYS: ‘PART OF THE JOB OF BEING PRESIDENT’

“You know, I grew up in a neighborhood of folks who were very proud of their lawn,” she said. “And I was raised to believe and to know that all people deserve dignity, and that we as Americans have a beautiful character. You know, we have ambitions and aspirations and dreams, but not everyone necessarily has access to the resources that can help them fuel those dreams and ambitions.

“So when I talk about building an opportunity economy, it is very much with the mind of investing in the ambitions and aspirations and the incredible work ethic of the American people and creating opportunity for people, for example, to start a small business.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday said it was continuing to extensively attack terrorist targets in southern Lebanon for a second day after detecting that Hezbollah was preparing to fire on Israeli territory.

“Dozens of Israeli Air Force aircraft are currently striking terrorist targets and rocket launchers to remove the threat to Israeli civilians,” IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Saturday in a translation of a press briefing.

The strikes have killed at least two top Hezbollah commanders and more than a dozen members of the group.

“We are methodically targeting and degrading Hezbollah’s launching capabilities, eliminating commanders and terrorists, as we did throughout the day,” Hagari said. “Overall, today we struck approximately 400 Hezbollah launchers, including thousands of rocket launcher barrels.”

Hagari said to Israelis: “Rockets and other threats may be launched toward Israeli territory in the near future. We ask you to strictly follow the Home Front Command’s defensive guidelines. We are in the midst of a time of warfare, so it is important to remain vigilant and alert.”

On Friday, he said the IDF killed Ibrahim Aqil, head of Hezbollah’s Operations Unit, along with 15 commanders of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Unit.

Ahmed Wahbi, who oversaw the military operations of Hezbollah’s Radwan special forces unit until early 2024, was also killed in the attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also called for an emergency meeting Saturday night of the special Security Cabinet at the IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv over the Lebanon strikes.

On Saturday, the State Department also issued an advisory, urging Americans to leave Lebanon “while commercial options are still available.”

“At this time, commercial flights are available, but at reduced capacity. If the security situation worsens, commercial options to depart may become unavailable,” the “Do Not Travel” advisory for Lebanon said. “The U.S. Embassy may not be able to assist U.S. citizens who choose to remain.”

The IDF said approximately 290 targets were hit in Lebanon over the last day, including thousands of “launcher barrels and additional terrorist infrastructure.”

Woman is left alone in ‘creepy’ section of airport as ‘best friend’ heads for hotel

0

A “friends” drama involving a serious travel disagreement has gone viral, eliciting some 5,000 reactions on social media plus nearly 3,000 comments, with those weighing in clearly taking one woman’s side of the issue over the other.

“My best friend and I recently went on a trip to the U.K.,” wrote a woman describing herself as just 20 years old.

“I actually have a U.K. passport since my dad is British,” she added, “but my friend had to get a U.K. visa.”

FLIGHT ATTENDANT ON TIKTOK REVEALS LUGGAGE TAG SAFETY TIP SHE WISHES MORE FLYERS KNEW ABOUT

She said the two friends “were supposed to take two flights, one that would arrive in France and a connecting flight that would fly to the U.K.,” she noted on the Reddit page known as AITA (“Am I the a–hole”).

“However,” she went on, “the second flight ended up being canceled. The next available flight wasn’t until 2 p.m. the next day, so we would have to wait around 17 hours.”

Passengers who had to wait overnight for a rescheduled connecting flight “were allowed to stay in nearby hotels for free.” But this didn’t apply to everyone.  (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson )

She said passengers “were allowed to stay in nearby hotels for free.”

Yet “this didn’t apply to people like my friend,” she added, “who wasn’t legally allowed to leave the airport because she didn’t have a visa for Europe.”

This is when matters became strained between the friends, as the woman’s account noted.

“I had the option to stay with her, but I chose to go to the hotel instead.”

The friend without the visa for Europe “had to stay within a specific area of the airport that had these bright ceiling lights that would stay on 24/7. There was construction nearby, so there was this extremely loud drilling noise every so often.”

BEWARE THESE 5 TRAVEL SCAMS, FROM FRIENDLY ‘FLIRTS’ TO DIGITAL GOLD DIGGERS

The writer added, “All the available seats were taken by other passengers, so my friend had to sleep on the floor. Plus, earlier that day, water spilled on our phone chargers, and her phone was only on 40%.”

A friendship may be over as one young woman (not pictured) was forced to spend the night alone in an airport while the other woman headed for a hotel without her.  (iStock)

The woman continued, “I had the option to stay with her, but I chose to go to the hotel instead.”

The friend was “furious” at this, said the woman, and “accus[ed] me of being a fake friend.”

She also “told me she was scared of being alone in a creepy, unknown place and wanted me there to comfort her,” said the writer, “and I assured her that [I’d] be back by the morning.”

The woman was accused of being “a fake friend.”

The friend found little consolation in those remarks.

“She said I was acting selfish for not even spending one night with her, but I hadn’t gotten any sleep in over 24 hours and I didn’t see why both of us had to suffer,” the woman wrote.

She asked others for their opinions — and received a flood of thoughts.

The top upvoted response to the drama itself received some 13,000 reactions.

“That was a really sh—- thing to do,” wrote the commenter as part of a much longer response.

“On a smaller scale, it reminds me of a friend who told me she wanted me to go to a certain touring Broadway show with her and how excited she was to see it with me. I couldn’t afford the $300 seats she wanted to buy and told her, but said that I could afford the $100 seats about 15 rows back.”

The commenter added, “She just brushed me off and said, ‘Well, this is where I’m sitting.’ She was very surprised … when I told her she would have to enjoy the show alone, then.”

The same person added, “We are not friends anymore. That was 20 years ago.”

She added to the young woman, “Consider the fact that what you did was even worse. It wasn’t just wanting to sit away from [the friend] in a better seat, it was abandoning her in a foreign country where she was scared. Major AH thing to do.”

Said this same commenter in an attempt to school the user, “I know you’re only 20, so I’m willing to give you a tiny bit of leeway due to that, but please learn now that your whole ‘why should both of us suffer?’ attitude will not serve you well in life.”

She went on, “You’ll lose many more friends than you make, you’ll be alienated at work, and you’ll find yourself alone more often than not. Selfishness like yours isn’t attractive, not even to other selfish people.”

Wrote another responder, eliciting plenty of reaction as well, “You don’t just abandon your mates and leave them on their own, especially not overnight and in a foreign country. I wouldn’t leave my friend to walk to a corner shop alone at night, let alone overnight where she’s expected to sleep on the floor, miles away from home, surrounded by strangers and unable to leave this room to get herself anything to make it more comfortable.”

Another person wrote that apparently “one night of discomfort” wasn’t worth the “friendship to you.”

Lost cat makes 900-mile journey back home to California from Yellowstone

0

A husband and wife in California who thought their cat was gone for good got the shock of a lifetime last month when he showed up more than 900 miles away from where he was lost.

Benny and Susanne Anguiano, and their two cats, arrived at Yellowstone National Park on June 4. Although the couple had always traveled with their pets, something spooked their Siamese cat, Rayne Beau, and he ran into the forest.

The couple looked for him for four days, said the Associated Press, and tried to tempt him to return with his favorite treats and toys.

MISSING DOG IN VIRGINIA CAPTURED AFTER 6 MONTHS ON THE RUN: ‘ALMOST LOST HOPE’

Rayne Beau was nowhere to be found.

Eventually, on June 8, the Anguianos began their return trip to their home in Salinas, California. Salinas is located south of San Francisco.

This photograph provided by Susanne Anguiano shows her cat Rayne Beau looking out the window of a camper in July 2023. Rayne Beau ran away from the camper in June 2024, and was missing for two months before being found 900 miles away. (Susanne Anguiano via AP)

Susanne told the Associated Press she was “crushed,” but remained hopeful that, against all odds, her cat would be found safe.

“We were entering the Nevada desert and all of a sudden I see a double rainbow. And I took a picture of it and I thought, that’s a sign. That’s a sign for our rainbow that he’s going to be okay,” she said.

As it turns out, little Rayne Beau was tougher than anyone thought.

In August, the Anguianos received word that Rayne Beau had been found – skinny, and with paws that were roughed up – but otherwise okay.

Rayne Beau was spotted in Roseville, California, almost 900 miles from where he ran off in Yellowstone, and about 200 miles away from Salinas, said the Associated Press.

A woman noticed the Siamese on the streets, and provided him with food and water before she successfully trapped him on August 3. She then brought him to the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where his microchip was scanned.

NEW STUDY SHOWS THE EFFECT OWNING PETS HAS ON OWNERS’ BRAINS

Rayne Beau lost six pounds during his two-month journey back to California, said the Associated Press.

The Anguianos believe that Rayne Beau, somehow, was able to make the journey back to California by himself.

His paws were really beat up.

“I believe truly that he made that trek mostly on his own. His paws were really beat up. Lost 40% of his body weight, had really low protein levels because of inadequate nutrition. So he was not cared for,” Susanne Anguiano told the Associated Press.

The couple have reached out to the media hoping to see if anyone had perhaps spotted their cat on his journey.

For now, the Anguianos have decided to put a pause on traveling with their cats.

“It was a very ugly feeling after we lost him,” Benny Anguiano told The Associated Press. “We’ll have to practice camping at home and camp in the driveway to get him used to it.”

And – they have taken extra steps to ensure their cats are safe and sound.

While the cats were already microchipped, they have since been fitted with AirTags – and a GPS global tracker for Rayne Beau, said the Aguianos.

How to clean up your Gmail inbox

0

If you’re like me, you probably have tens of thousands of emails in your Gmail inbox. Most of them are probably read, and some are probably unread, but regardless, they are all sitting in your inbox, taking up space.

You only get 15GB of storage for free with Gmail, and while 15GB may seem like a lot, emails can add up quickly, especially if you receive emails with attachments such as images or videos.

A clean inbox is the first step to a more organized personal and professional life. Cleaning up your Gmail inbox can be done in a few easy steps. Let’s go over 10 different methods to reclaim your Gmail inbox.

Tip 1 — Delete large attachments

Emails with large attachments, such as video or audio files, can take up a lot of space. Luckily, Google makes it easy to search for and find emails with large attachments buried in your inbox. From your Gmail search bar, you can search for emails larger than 10MB, showing you all emails in your inbox with an attachment larger than 10 megabytes. This will help you delete emails with large attachments you no longer need from your inbox. To delete the email, all you have to do is:

  • Open Gmail and type size: 10MB in the search bar.
  • Select the emails you want to delete by clicking the checkbox next to each email.
  • Click the trash icon at the top of the page to move the selected emails to Trash.
  • Empty the Trash to permanently delete these emails and free up space.

Tip 2 — Delete entire categories

By default, Gmail gives you several categories to help organize your inbox. You should have category tags for primary, promotions and social.

  • If you click Inbox in the left pane in Gmail, you should see a column that shows which categories you are active in.
  • You can add or remove categories from here, and I recommend using category tags relevant to your life.

HOW TO FILTER AND SORT EMAILS ON YOUR IPHONE AND IPAD

Tip 3 — Unsubscribe from email lists

Remember that app you signed up for 10 years ago and still receive daily emails about? You’re not alone. Most of us get emails from a mailing list we subscribed to long ago that is no longer relevant to us. The simple solution here is to unsubscribe. Here’s how to Unsubscribe:

  • Look for the unsubscribe link: Most promotional emails include an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it, and follow the instructions to remove yourself from the list.
  • Use email management tools: Unsubscribing from multiple email lists can be a time-consuming process. Luckily, a helpful tool called Clean Email will do the hard work for you.
  • Mark as spam: If you can’t find an unsubscribe link, mark the email as spam. This will help your email provider filter out similar messages in the future.
  • Update your preferences: Some emails come from services you still use but don’t need frequent updates from. Check if you can update your email preferences to receive fewer notifications.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR PRIVATE DATA FROM THE INTERNET

Tip 4 — Block unwanted senders

As a tech reporter, I receive many emails from sales reps from various companies. Many of these emails come from companies and senders outside of my scope for the things I typically cover, and unfortunately, I have had a few salespeople who wouldn’t leave me alone. If you have a similar issue, I recommend just considering blocking them.

  • All you need to do is open any message from a sender you want to block; on the right side of your screen, click the ellipses and select block.

HOW TO CREATE A QUICK ALIAS EMAIL EMAIL ADDRESS

Tip 5 — Delete emails by sender

An easy way to clear up some space quickly in your Gmail inbox is to delete old emails from the sender. Do you have a client you no longer work with, or would you want to delete all social media notification messages? Using Gmail search, you can filter all emails in the From section to delete emails from a particular sender.

  • All you need to do is click the toolbar on the right side of the Gmail search box and input the sender’s name in the From section.
  • Then, click the search button. This will display all emails from that sender.
  • You can then select all these emails by clicking the checkbox at the top of the list.
  • Finally, click the trash icon to delete them.

Tip 6 — Delete emails by date

You can sort emails by date and delete them in the same search box form. There’s a good chance you don’t need those emails still in your inbox after five or 10 years, so why not search by date and delete them?

Just like you did with the deleting emails by sender section, all you need to do is click the toolbar in the Gmail search bar, and you can sort emails within a specific time in the form. Here’s how to do it.

  • Select the date range you want to delete emails from. For example, you can type before: YYYY/MM/DD or after: YYYY/MM/DD in the search bar to specify the date range.
  • Once you have your search results, click the checkbox at the top left to select all emails in the search results.
  • Finally, click the trash can icon to delete the selected emails.

Tip 7 — Delete emails by subject

An easy way to quickly clean up your Gmail inbox is to delete emails with specific subject lines. Gmail’s advanced email search also has a line allowing you to search for emails by particular phrases or keywords in the subject line. Make sure to use quotation marks around any words you are searching. You can quickly find and delete emails this way, and it’s one of my favorite ways to clean up an inbox. Here’s how to do it.

  • Log in to your Gmail account on your computer.
  • At the top of the page, you’ll see a search bar. Type in the subject line you want to search for, enclosed in quotation marks (e.g., “Meeting Notes”).
  • Gmail will display all emails with that specific subject line.
  • Click the checkbox at the top left corner of the email list to select all emails on the current page. If you have more emails than what is displayed on one page, you will see an option to select all conversations that match the search.
  • Click the trash can icon to delete the selected emails.

Tip 8 — Organize your Gmail inbox with labels

Labels are a great way to organize your Gmail inbox. You can easily create a new label by clicking on the Create a new label option on the left sidebar within Gmail. I use labels to organize my most valuable emails, typically work emails, in my inbox. I also use Gmail’s label system to automatically filter my emails, which I’ll tell you more about in the next tip.

Create a new label:

  • Open Gmail.
  • On the left sidebar, click on “Create new label.”
  • Enter a name for your label (e.g., “Work Emails”).

Apply labels to emails:

  • Select the emails you want to label by checking the boxes next to them.
  • At the top of the page, click on the “Labels” icon.
  • Choose the label you want to apply, or create a new one if needed.

Organize emails automatically:

  • Use Gmail’s filter system to automatically label incoming emails.
  • Click on the “Show search options” icon in the search bar.
  • Enter your criteria (e.g., emails from a specific sender).
  • Click on “Create filter.”
  • Choose “Apply the label” and select the label you want to use.
  • Click “Create filter.”

Manage Your Labels:

  • To edit or delete a label, hover over the label name on the left sidebar.
  • Click on the three dots (More) next to the label name.
  • Choose “Edit” to rename or “Remove label” to delete it.

Tip 9 — Make use of Gmail’s built-in organization features

Gmail has many organizational features that many users neglect. For example, within Gmail, you can star emails to mark them as important or color code folders of emails to stay on top of the organization. You can also mark important emails that need responses, and all of these features are just a simple click away from the advanced settings button within Gmail.

  • Star Emails: You can star important emails to easily find them later. Just click the star icon next to the email. You can also customize the star system by going to Settings > See all settings > General > Stars.
  • Labels: Labels are like folders but more flexible. You can create labels to categorize your emails. To create a label, go to Settings > See all settings > Labels > Create new label. You can also nest labels under other labels for better organization.
  • Color Code Labels: To color code your labels, hover over a label in the sidebar, click the three dots, and select Label color. This helps you visually distinguish between different categories of emails.
  • Filters: Filters automatically sort your incoming emails. Go to Settings > See all settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses > Create a new filter. You can set criteria like sender, subject, or keywords, and choose actions like applying a label, archiving or deleting.
  • Priority Inbox: Enable Priority Inbox to automatically sort your emails into categories like Important and Unread, Starred and Everything Else. Go to Settings > See all settings > Inbox > Inbox type > Priority Inbox.
  • Snooze Emails: If you need to deal with an email later, you can snooze it. Hover over the email, click the clock icon and choose when you want the email to reappear in your inbox.

HOW TO USE SMART COMPOSE TO WRITE EMAILS FASTER ON GMAIL

Tip 10 — Create new filters

Gmail’s filter system automates organizing all the emails in your inbox. Once you’ve cleaned it out, this should help you keep it clean. Filters in Gmail allow you to automatically redirect emails once they hit your inbox, saving you the time and trouble of manually sorting through them. For example, you can create a filter that will send all newsletters from specific senders to a particular inbox, or you could create a filter that automatically sends emails from particular senders straight to the trash.

  • To create a filter, type in a specific keyword you want to filter into the Gmail search bar and click on the filter symbol.
  • Clicking the filter symbol will open a dropdown menu that you can use to refine your filter options.
  • Once you’ve created your refinements, click the Create filter button.

Fox News AI Newsletter: Microsoft goes nuclear

0

Welcome to Fox News’ Artificial Intelligence newsletter with the latest AI technology advancements.

IN TODAY’S NEWSLETTER:

– Microsoft deal would reopen Pennsylvania nuclear plant, site of 1979 partial meltdown, to power AI
– AI shouldn’t decide who dies. It’s neither human nor humane
– Donny Osmond says AI is a ‘tool, not a substitute’

Could Microsoft's creepy 'Recall' AI feature become potent spy tool for crooks?

Microsoft and other tech companies are leaning into artificial intelligence. (Microsoft)

MICROSOFT GOES NUCLEAR: A new agreement between Microsoft and Constellation Energy Corporation to provide power to the tech giant’s data centers for artificial intelligence is paving the way for the restart of a nuclear reactor on Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island, the site of a 1979 partial meltdown.

PULLING THE PLUG: Artificial intelligence (AI) will certainly change the practice of medicine. As we write this, PubMed (the website repository for medical research) indexes 4,018 publications with the keyword “ChatGPT.” Indeed, researchers have been using AI and large-language models (LLMs) for everything from reading pathology slides to answering patient messages. However, a recent paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that AI can act as a surrogate in end-of-life discussions. This goes too far.

‘TOOL, NOT A SUBSTITUTE’: Donny Osmond has been in the entertainment business for decades, but he is not afraid to embrace new technology. The 66-year-old singer told Fox News Digital that artificial intelligence can benefit recording artists, and he pointed out that there is often a fear of new technology when it is first introduced.

GET IN LINE: The U.S. will host an artificial intelligence safety summit in November, aiming to further align top nations on their tech goals and priorities of collaboration among the international community.

US State Department launches online passport renewal application

0

United States citizens will now be able to more easily renew their passports.

The Department of State announced Wednesday that passport holders will be able to submit an online form to renew their passports, no longer requiring a mail-in application.

“By offering this online alternative to the traditional paper application process, the Department is embracing digital transformation to offer the most efficient and convenient passport renewal experience possible,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced.

The faster process is available for citizens seeking to renew their travel documents up to one year before it expires or within five years after expiration.

Online renewal is not available for first-time applicants.

Expedited renewals and applications from passport holders outside the United States also do not qualify for the online application.

Following staffing shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, the State Department bolstered hiring efforts and technology investments to lower wait times on passport applications.

The department processed over 24 million passports during 2023.

“This is not going to be the last thing that we do,” said Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Rena Bitter.

Passport charges remain at $130 regardless of method of renewal.

Sneaky scammers drain bank account in sinister phone phishing scheme

0

We often receive text alerts from our banks about potential fraudulent transactions.

While these notifications are meant to protect us, they can sometimes be exploited by savvy thieves.

Here’s a real-life example shared by Kevin from Dandridge, Tennessee, who wanted to let others know about these sneaky tactics so that they could protect themselves against these heartless scammers.

The incident

Kevin shared a troubling experience where his wife received a text from their debit card bank questioning a potential fraudulent charge. This wasn’t unusual, as they had received similar notifications before and had to replace their cards. She responded with “NO,” indicating that the transaction wasn’t theirs.

Shortly after, she received a phone call from what she thought was the bank. However, the call was from the thieves, who cleverly posed as bank representatives. They didn’t ask for account numbers or passwords but instead requested the answer to a “secret question” that was legitimately set up when the account was created.

Once the thieves had this information, they shut off notifications, transferred funds between accounts, set up an ACH transfer and withdrew most of the funds. Fortunately, Kevin’s wife checked their accounts daily and quickly noticed the suspicious activity.

They filed a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and a local police report. The IC3 is a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, providing a way for individuals to report cyber crimes, including online fraud and identity theft. The bank’s fraud department was able to retrieve the funds from the receiving bank. However, the experience was time-consuming and stressful.

Why scammers specifically ask for secret questions

Scammers often ask for the answers to secret questions because these answers can provide them with a crucial piece of information needed to access your accounts. Secret questions are typically used as an additional layer of security for account recovery or verification processes. By obtaining this information, scammers can bypass other security measures and gain unauthorized access to your accounts. Kevin’s experience highlights why scammers target secret questions:

Exploiting trust: Scammers often pose as legitimate representatives from your bank or other trusted institutions. By asking for the answer to a secret question, they exploit your trust and the perceived legitimacy of the request. Kevin’s wife thought she was speaking with the bank when, in reality, she was talking to the thieves who had cleverly mimicked the bank’s procedures.

Bypassing security measures: Once scammers have the answer to a secret question, they can use it to reset your password or verify your identity, effectively bypassing other security measures that are in place to protect your account. This is exactly what happened to Kevin’s wife; the scammers used the answer to the secret question to shut off notifications, transfer funds and set up an ACH transfer.

Easier to guess or find: Unlike passwords, which are often complex and unique, the answers to secret questions can sometimes be easily guessed or found through social engineering. For example, common questions like “What is your mother’s maiden name?” or “What was the name of your first pet?” might be discoverable through social media or public records. In Kevin’s case, the scammers cleverly posed as bank representatives and asked for the answer to a secret question that was legitimately set up when the account was created.

Understanding why scammers ask for secret questions can help you be more cautious and protect your sensitive information. Always be wary of unsolicited requests for personal information, and verify the legitimacy of the request through official channels. Kevin’s story serves as a powerful reminder to stay vigilant and protect your financial security.

Tips to protect yourself

Protecting yourself from fraud requires vigilance and proactive measures. Here are 11 essential tips to help you stay safe:

1. Verify text notifications: Use your bank’s official app or website to verify any text notifications you receive. This ensures that you’re interacting with a legitimate source and not a scammer. If in doubt, contact your bank directly using the phone number listed on their official website. If you can, it would be ideal to have a trusted contact at your bank whom you can call to confirm any text notifications you receive. This ensures that you’re speaking with a legitimate representative.

2. Never share secret answers: Never give out the answer to your secret question over the phone, even if the caller seems legitimate. Banks typically won’t ask for this information in this manner.

3. Google phone numbers: Before answering any calls or texts, Google the phone number to verify its authenticity. This simple step can help you avoid falling victim to scams.

4. Regular account monitoring: Make it a habit to check your bank accounts daily. Early detection of suspicious activity can prevent significant losses.

5. Report suspicious activity: If you suspect fraud, report it immediately to your bank and local authorities. Quick action can help mitigate the damage.

6. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Whenever possible, enable 2FA on your bank accounts and other sensitive online accounts. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone.

7. Use strong, unique passwords: Ensure that your passwords are strong and unique for each account. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or common words. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your passwords securely.

8. Be cautious with public Wi-Fi: Avoid accessing your bank accounts or conducting sensitive transactions over public Wi-Fi networks. These networks can be less secure and more susceptible to hacking.

9. Regularly update your software: Keep your devices and apps updated with the latest security patches. This helps protect against vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cybercriminals.

10. Have strong antivirus software: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

11. Remove your personal information from the internet: To reduce your online presence, consider using a data removal service. While no service can guarantee the complete removal of your data from the internet, a data removal service is really a smart choice. They aren’t cheap — and neither is your privacy. These services do all the work for you by actively monitoring and systematically erasing your personal information from hundreds of websites.

It’s what gives me peace of mind and has proven to be the most effective way to erase your personal data from the internet. By limiting the information available, you reduce the risk of scammers cross-referencing data from breaches with the information they might find on the dark web, making it harder for them to target you. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CREDIT AND BANK CARDS FROM GETTING HACKED

Kurt’s key takeaways

Kevin’s story is a reminder of how vigilant we need to be in protecting our financial information. Thieves are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and it’s crucial to stay one step ahead. By following the tips outlined above, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to these banking scams. Remember, staying informed and proactive is your best defense against this kind of fraud.
