Travelers on TikTok are making grocery stores the hottest vacation ‘destination’

0

Travelers may want to immerse themselves in a new city by living as locals do, and some appear to be achieving it by visiting grocery stores abroad.

The trend has taken over TikTok with people calling the excursion a “cultural experience.”

Vacationers are also strolling down grocery store aisles for an opportunity to grab tasty souvenirs while on an international trip.

Shannon Mill, @shesthetea, a social media creator from Philadelphia, said she has not only fallen in love with this food and travel trend but has also enjoyed seeing other people experience it for themselves.

Shannon Mill of Philadelphia told FoxNews Digital that she loves the latest trend of people visiting supermarkets abroad and posting their experience on social media. (Shannon Mill)

“[This trend] is something I’ve noticed more and more as people are drawn to the idea of experiencing a country’s culture through its food,” Mill told Fox News Digital via email.

“Grocery stores provide a glimpse into local life that’s often overlooked — seeing what locals eat, discovering unique products and getting a feel for the day-to-day routines- and it’s something that I’m very passionate about,” she said.

Mill thinks part of the reason this trend has taken off is that it’s both relatable and visually interesting for a tourist.

Checking out all the different food brands that you can only try while abroad could lend itself to the unique shopping experience, according to Mill.

“There’s something special about seeing unfamiliar products and comparing them to what we have back home. Plus, it’s an affordable and authentic way for travelers to immerse themselves in the local culture,” she said.

“It tells you a lot more about the country and the culture there than most things do imo [in my opinion],” one TikTok user commented. “Plus I like to envision what my life would be like in every country.”

“Omg I thought i was the only one… i lovvveeee roaming around in foreign supermarkets,” another person commented.

“That’s half the fun of going abroad,” an employee with Booking.com commented on a video that follows the trend.

Visiting specialty grocery stores in the U.S. also seems to be making waves.

A Wegmans food market location in New York City has been drawing crowds filled with tourists and locals who hope to catch a glimpse of the viral live bluefin tuna cutting demonstration.

Mill has shared many of her favorite purchases from markets, from various meats to Tuscan olive oil and more.

One of Mill’s favorite grocery store experiences comes from her trip to Rome, she said.

“I absolutely love shopping in grocery stores, but I enjoy shopping even more in local markets, butcher shops and produce stands. Rome has no shortage of these amazing places,” Mill added.

“On my first visit to Rome about two-and-a-half years ago, I was trying to cook an authentic Roman dish for my friends during our study-abroad trip. I went to a local butcher shop to pick up traditional ingredients like guanciale [cured Italian pork] and pecorino Romano.”

Not only did Mill appreciate the grocery store and the culture, she said she also ended up meeting her boyfriend – the butcher behind the counter.

“The butcher, Edo, eventually became my boyfriend, and now almost three years later, we travel back and forth between the U.S. and Italy. We’ve even launched our own business, sharing global food immersions and experiences, both in Italy and in America. It’s been an incredible journey,” she said.

61 days: Kamala Harris has yet to do formal press conference since emerging as Democratic nominee

0

Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 61 days as the presumptive, and now, official Democratic nominee for president without holding an official press conference.

Under pressure to sit down for a substantive interview after weeks of stonewalling, Harris finally ended her interview drought last month in Georgia when she was joined by running mate Tim Walz for a pre-taped piece with CNN’s Dana Bash that was a far cry from a traditional press conference. She’s done more interviews since, including on Tuesday with the National Association of Black Journalists, and she made time to hang out with supporter Oprah Winfrey on Thursday at a star-studded campaign event.

Trump held his third news conference since the beginning of August last week in California, taking the opportunity to roast his opponent’s home state and hold forth on a number of topics, including crime, immigration and inflation.

BERNIE SANDERS SAYS HARRIS DROPPING FAR-LEFT POLICIES ‘IN ORDER TO WIN THE ELECTION’

Harris sat for two taped radio interviews last week, and she gave her first solo television interview as the Democratic nominee last Friday in Philadelphia.

But as for when she’ll actually do a formal press conference, that day may never come, at least while she’s still a candidate.

Conservative Radio Libre host Jorge Bonilla feels Harris should do a press conference but said it’s almost “irrelevant” because she continues to get a pass.

HARRIS DODGES QUESTION ON LOWERING PRICES BY DESCRIBING ‘MIDDLE-CLASS’ ROOTS: NEIGHBORS ‘PROUD OF THEIR LAWN’

“She is highly unlikely to do a press conference because the media have enabled and encouraged her ‘plexiglass basement’ strategy, wherein she preserves the illusion of being out there while remaining wholly inaccessible to the press and therefore unaccountable,” Bonilla told Fox News Digital.

Trump has sought to highlight the contrast in media availability between the two, sitting for several lengthy interviews in recent weeks, in addition to his three news conferences.

In her interview on Friday in Philadelphia, her answer citing her middle-class upbringing when asked about specifics of her economic policy drew sharp criticism.

BARBARA WALTERS WOULD EXPECT KAMALA HARRIS TO DO INTERVIEWS, AUTHOR SAYS: ‘PART OF THE JOB OF BEING PRESIDENT’

“You know, I grew up in a neighborhood of folks who were very proud of their lawn,” she said. “And I was raised to believe and to know that all people deserve dignity, and that we as Americans have a beautiful character. You know, we have ambitions and aspirations and dreams, but not everyone necessarily has access to the resources that can help them fuel those dreams and ambitions.

“So when I talk about building an opportunity economy, it is very much with the mind of investing in the ambitions and aspirations and the incredible work ethic of the American people and creating opportunity for people, for example, to start a small business.”

Israel strikes Hezbollah targets inside Lebanon

0

Israeli officials on Thursday were warning residents in the north to stay inside or remain near bomb shelters after the Israeli Air Force (IAF) struck hundreds of Hezbollah military targets inside Lebanon.

The IAF, using intelligence from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), struck some 100 launchers and additional “terrorist infrastructure sites” comprising about 1,000 barrels.

Israeli officials said these barrels “were ready to be used in the immediate future to fire toward Israeli territory.”

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

HOW DID THE HEZBOLLAH PAGER EXPLOSIONS HAPPEN? 5 THINGS TO KNOW

The strikes come after two days of attacks targeting thousands of Hezbollah pagers and walkie-talkies that have been widely blamed on Israel.

Speaking for the first time since back-to-back attacks Thursday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah described the mass bombing of devices as a “severe blow” and threatened retaliation.

During his speech, Hezbollah struck at least four times in northern Israel, and two Israeli soldiers were killed in a strike earlier in the day. Israeli warplanes flew low over Beirut while Nasrallah spoke and broke the sound barrier, scattering birds and prompting people in houses and offices to quickly open windows to prevent them from shattering.

Earlier Thursday, Hezbollah said it had targeted three Israeli military positions near the border, two of them with drones. Israeli hospitals reported eight people lightly or moderately injured.

The attacks have heightened fears that 11 months of near-daily exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israel will escalate into an all-out war. Hezbollah says its strikes on Israel are a show of support for Hamas. Israel’s nearly year-old war with Hamas in Gaza began after its militants led the Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

Israel has responded to Hezbollah’s attacks with strikes in southern Lebanon and has struck senior figures from the group in the capital, Beirut. The exchanges have killed hundreds in Lebanon and dozens in Israel and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents on each side of the border.

Israeli leaders have stepped up warnings in recent weeks of a potential larger military operation against Hezbollah, saying they are determined to stop the group’s fire to allow tens of thousands of Israelis to return to homes near the border.

In a briefing Thursday, the Israeli defense minister said Hezbollah would “pay an increasing price” as Israel seeks to make conditions near its border with Lebanon safe enough for residents to return.

“The sequence of our military actions will continue,” he said.

Cedar Point theme park unveils record-breaking ’tilt’ roller coaster for 2025

0

A new, record-breaking roller coaster will open at Cedar Point in 2025, officials at the Sandusky, Ohio-based park announced today.

“Siren’s Curse is the tallest, fastest, longest tilt coaster in North America,” Tony Clark, director of communications at Cedar Point, told Fox News Digital in an on-camera interview.

Riders on board Siren’s Curse will “climb 160 feet into the air,” before encountering what Clark called the roller coaster’s “signature move.”

‘TOP THRILL 2’ ROLLER COASTER AT CEDAR POINT WILL NOT REOPEN THIS SEASON

“Your train will travel to a piece of track that all of a sudden disconnects and tilts 90 degrees,” he said.

Riders will be “looking straight down at the midway below. And then at once everything locks into place, it’ll release you, and then you’ll travel through the rest of the ride,” he said.

“Siren’s Curse is the tallest, fastest, longest tilt coaster in North America,” said Tony Clark, director of communications at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. (Artist concept rendering courtesy of Cedar Point)

“It’s going to be a pretty amazing experience,” said Clark, adding that the coaster’s speed will reach 58 miles per hour.

Siren’s Curse is just one of two roller coasters in North America with this “tilt” mechanism, said Clark. A third is under construction in Texas.

“Cedar Point’s been known for roller coaster innovation over its history,” said Clark.

He continued, “And so we were the first to have several big coasters that had not been seen before. This is one that’s not in our lineup.”

Clark said the tilt mechanism is “very different from the other roller coasters that we have.”

“We wanted to add something diverse and different to our lineup,” he said. “And Siren’s Curse is exactly that.”

And while the coaster may look frightening, Clark insists that the rider is never at any real risk.

“The whole point of thrill ride is really to give you a thrill. That is the point. And there’s always this sense of danger, but the danger, though, is just kind of in your head because the manufacturer does a lot of testing,” he said, adding that Cedar Point also does its own testing on rides.

The mechanism will “lock” the train into place on the track, said Clark.

The Siren’s Curse roller coaster climbs 160 feet into the air.

“And then only when it’s locked will that tilt table release and then turn 90 degrees,” he said.

“So a lot of safety precautions are put into the ride’s safety systems. Even if one little thing doesn’t work, it’s a ‘check engine’ light and the ride doesn’t run.”

The announcement of Cedar Point’s newest roller coaster took some theme park enthusiasts by surprise – especially as the park has had significant trouble over the past season with its newest roller coaster, Top Thrill 2.

“No one really saw this coming at all,” said Brandon Stoff, creator of the YouTube channel “Theme Park Recommendations” who posts content about roller coasters and upcoming theme park attractions.

Stoff said that prior to learning about Siren’s Curse, he believed Top Thrill 2 would “be marketed as the new ride in 2025” at Cedar Point.

“Cedar Point blew us out of the water with an epic announcement for their new-for-2025 record-breaking tilt coaster,” said Stoff of Charlotte, North Carolina.

He continued, “Siren’s Curse will be a great addition to Cedar Point’s already impressive lineup of roller coasters.”

Siren’s Curse is expected to open in early summer 2025, Clark told Fox News Digital.  (Artist concept rendering courtesy of Cedar Point)

Next year, Stoff predicted, will be “epic” for Cedar Point, especially as Top Thrill 2 is scheduled to re-open after closing due to issues with the ride’s vehicles.

Aside from the tilting mechanism, Siren’s Curse will also feature on-board audio and LED lights on its trains – which are other firsts for the park.

These features will help enhance the ride’s story, said Clark, which tells the tale of the “Lake Erie monster” coming to take over the ride.

“You’ll hear that audio throughout the entire experience,” he said. “We’re excited to have that as a first here at Cedar Point.”

Exactly when park guests will be able to ride Siren’s Curse is not yet clear.

Siren’s Curse is expected to open in “early summer 2025,” said Clark, a few weeks after Cedar Point opens for the summer in May.

A rare parasitic infection known as raccoon roundworm has been confirmed in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Two people in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County have been diagnosed with the infection, Baylisascaris procyonis, which is caused by a parasitic worm from the raccoon’s intestines.

When it infects humans, the parasite can affect the brain, spinal cord and eyes, potentially causing brain swelling and eye disease, the health department warned.

SUPERBUGS DUE TO ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE COULD KILL 39 MILLION PEOPLE BY 2050, LARGE STUDY FINDS

After maturing in the raccoon’s intestines, the worms produce eggs that are then passed with the animal’s feces, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

After two to four weeks, the eggs become infectious. The eggs can survive for years in the right conditions.

“Aside from its natural host, the raccoon, some accidentally infected species include domestic dogs and humans,” Erica Susky, a certified infection control practitioner based in Canada, told Fox News Digital.

TICK-BORNE WETLAND VIRUS, NEWLY DISCOVERED IN CHINA, COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO BRAIN, RESEARCHERS SAY

“The roundworm infects new hosts via ingestion of the infective larval stage, either by eating the infected host or by ingestion of contaminated feces in the environment.”

Although it is rare, infection can happen when people accidentally ingest the roundworm’s eggs (which are in the raccoon’s feces) from soil, water or on contaminated objects, according to the CDC.

Young children and developmentally disabled persons are at the highest risk, as they are more likely to accidentally put contaminated fingers, soil or objects into their mouths, the CDC warned.

The infection cannot be transmitted among people.

FIRST CASE OF HUMAN BIRD FLU DIAGNOSED WITHOUT EXPOSURE TO INFECTED ANIMALS, CDC SAYS

“While Baylisascariasis is rare in people and the risk to the general public is low at this time, it is concerning because a large number of raccoons live near people, and the infection rate in raccoons is likely high,” stated the LA health department.

The parasite is present in the U.S. and Canada, Susky noted, though it is more common in the Southern latitudes, the Northeast, the Midwest and the West coast.

“It is concerning because a large number of raccoons live near people, and the infection rate in raccoons is likely high.”

Fewer than 25 cases of raccoon roundworm have been reported in the U.S., the CDC noted, but the number may be larger due to misdiagnosis or lack of diagnosis.

As of 2018, there had been 23 confirmed cases and six deaths in the country.

Symptoms of raccoon roundworm

Effects of raccoon roundworm may vary depending on the volume of eggs consumed and where they travel in the body.

“Some of those infected have had no symptoms, known as subclinical infections,” Susky said.

Brain

Swelling of the brain is one adverse effect of raccoon roundworm, health experts warn. (iStock)

Larger numbers of eggs can lead to a variety of symptoms, including nausea, fatigue, enlarged liver, loss of muscle control, loss of coordination, blindness, coma and lack of attention to people and surroundings, according to the CDC.

Those at the highest risk of severe disease include children, adults 65 and older, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems, the agency warned.

Preventing infection

Studies show that up to 60% of infectious diseases in humans come from animals.

“Our health is closely linked to the health of the animals around us,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, a health officer with Los Angeles County, in the press release.

“Our health is closely linked to the health of the animals around us.”

“Simple precautions, like washing your hands regularly, avoiding direct contact with wild animals and their waste, keeping pets healthy, and preventing wildlife from sheltering or living in or next to our homes or properties can help keep our neighborhoods and families safe and healthy.”

The best means of prevention is to avoid contact with wild animals or birds whenever possible, including dead ones, according to Susky.

“One way to do this is to ensure that open attics and crawl spaces remain closed up, thus eliminating potential hiding places,” she said.

People are advised to keep pets indoors whenever possible, and to keep them on leashes when outdoors.

“Take pets frequently to the veterinarian if they are outside for regular deworming, or to find out whether it is required and with what frequency, and seek veterinarian treatment if a pet becomes ill,” Susky recommended.

Hand-washing is especially crucial, she said, as eggs could inadvertently be in soil and water.

“It is always good infection prevention to wash one’s hands frequently — for example, before preparing food or after contact with animals,” Susky added.

“And if one is spending time outdoors, they should wash their hands upon completing their outdoor activities.”

Adults should help remind children to wash their hands after playing outside, Susky advised, as they are more at risk of accidentally ingesting soil and water.

“For this reason, cover sandboxes when not in use, so that animals cannot use the sandbox for defecating or urinating,” she added.

Pilgrimages to Medjugorje in Europe may yield ‘positive fruits,’ says Vatican

0

The Vatican on Thursday issued a statement acknowledging that spiritual “fruits” had come from the site of controversial purported apparitions of the Virgin Mary — while also stopping short of saying these apparitions were supernatural in origin.

In June 1981, a group of six young people in Medjugorje, a town in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina, claimed to have experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary, the Associated Press reported.

In “The Queen of Peace,” the title of a lengthy “note” published on Thursday by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the dicastery, and Msgr. Armando Matteo, secretary for the doctrinal section, noted that many “positive fruits” have come from Medjugorje since the alleged apparitions began in 1981.

BEWARE THESE 5 TRAVEL SCAMS, FROM FRIENDLY ‘FLIRTS’ TO DIGITAL GOLD DIGGERS

Since the alleged visions began, Medjugorje has become a major pilgrimage site — with well over a million pilgrims coming each year to the town of just over 2,000 residents.

The Vatican gave its formal approval of pilgrimages to the site back in 2019, noted the website Vatican News.

Pilgrims are shown reciting prayers next to the statue of the Virgin Mary inside St. James Church in Medjugorje, Bosnia. The church and town of Medjugorje have been a major pilgrimage site since the 1980s.  (AP Photo/Armin Durgut)

Medjugorje, according to Thursday’s note, has a “large number” of spiritual “fruits” emerging from pilgrimages to the site, including “abundant conversions, a frequent return to the sacraments (particularly, the Eucharist and Reconciliation), many vocations to priestly, religious and married life,” and others.

“The positive fruits are most evident in the promotion of a healthy practice of a life of faith, in accordance with the tradition of the Church,” the note said.

“In the context of Medjugorje, this applies both to those who had been previously distant from the faith, as well as to those who had practiced the faith only superficially.”

In the original vision, the figure introduced herself as the “Queen of Peace” and has since become known as “Our Lady of Medjugorje.”

AIRPORT ‘GATEXIETY’ IS LATEST PHENOMENON AMONG TRAVELERS: WHAT TO KNOW

In the decades since, a number of the original visionaries have reported continued and regular visions of the Virgin Mary.

The messages transmitted in these visions are cataloged and published on the Medjugorje website.

In the most recent published message, on Aug. 25, visionary Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti reported hearing a prayer for peace.

The regularity of the alleged messages from the Virgin Mary, as well as the content of some of the messages that appeared to be contradictory to accepted doctrine, have resulted in Medjugorje being somewhat of a controversial devotion.

A diverse group of people in a church.

Each year, over a million people visit Medjugorje, a town in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina.  (AP Photo/Armin Durgut)

Additionally, some of the visionaries have become pilgrimage attractions themselves — raising questions as to whether this is appropriate.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNCOVER STONES IN ISRAEL MATCHING ROAD WHERE ‘JESUS WALKED’

These controversies were addressed in Thursday’s note, with Fernandez and Matteo writing they “strongly advise” that pilgrims to Medjugorje go there with the goal of having “an encounter with Mary, the Queen of Peace, and – faithful to her love for her Son – to encounter Christ and listen to him through mediation on the Word, by participation in the Eucharist, and in Eucharistic Adoration,” rather than meeting with the alleged visionaries.

The Vatican has never stated that the alleged apparitions in Medjugorje are authentic or “supernatural in origin.”

Unlike other well-known pilgrimage sites in Europe alleging Marian apparitions – Fatima, Portugal; Lourdes, France; and Knock, Ireland – the Vatican has never stated that the alleged apparitions in Medjugorje are authentic or “supernatural in origin.”

In Thursday’s note, however, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith did approve a “nihil obstat” declaration from the local bishop in Bosnia regarding the alleged apparitions at Medjugorje.

For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle

“Nihil obstat” is a Latin phase meaning “no objection.”

In this case, this means the faithful are “authorized to give their adherence in a prudent matter” but are not obliged to believe that the apparitions are happening or are authentic.

“The nihil obstat indicates that the faithful can receive a positive encouragement for their Christian life through this spiritual proposal, and it authorizes public acts of devotion,” the note said.

The Vatican did not say that the visions alleged at Medjugorje were authentic or “supernatural in origin.”  (AP Photo/Armin Durgut)

“Such a determination is possible insofar as many positive fruits have been noted in the midst of a spiritual experience, while negative and dangerous effects have not spread among the People of God,” the note said.

But the note clarified that just because there have been positive things coming from Medjugorje, that does not mean that the visions are actually from the Virgin Mary.

“Moreover, the positive assessment that most of the messages of Medjugorje are edifying does not imply a declaration that they have a direct supernatural origin,” the note said.

“Consequently, when referring to ‘messages’ from Our Lady, one should always bear in mind that they are ‘alleged messages,'” the note added.

Dengue fever symptoms seen in Los Angeles County from local mosquito bites

0

Health officials in Los Angeles County, California, on Wednesday warned of an “unprecedented” rise in dengue fever among residents who have not traveled out of the country.

At least three cases of dengue have been reported in residents in the Baldwin Park neighborhood east of downtown Los Angeles after they were bitten by local mosquitoes, Los Angeles County public health officials said.

“This is an unprecedented cluster of locally acquired dengue for a region where dengue has not previously been transmitted by mosquitoes,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Dengue is typically acquired after traveling abroad to a country where dengue is commonly spread. The first locally acquired case in California was reported a year ago.

Dengue spread from mosquito bites within the U.S. has been reported this year in Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, where officials have declared a dengue epidemic.

There have been 3,085 such cases in the U.S. this year, of which 96% were in Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Symptoms may mimic other viruses such as the flu, though officials say the most serious cases can result in shock, severe bleeding and severe organ impairment which require immediate medical attention.

Los Angeles County Public Health said it is working with other agencies and the city of Baldwin to go door-to-door and speak to residents about the risk of dengue and mosquito bite prevention.

A woman’s TikTok video is capturing attention after she tried to find the family of a man who sat next to her on an international flight.

Kimberley Hill said she was traveling from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Indianapolis, Indiana, when she sat down next to a kind man.

Hill told Fox News Digital via email that the man, named Pat, deserved attention after he spent the majority of the flight “raving” about his family.

She added, “The flight attendant had asked me to put up my bag and rather than me trying to get out into the aisle, he was already on the aisle seat, so he offered to put it in the overhead bin for me.”

From there, Hill said, the two began talking since the flight had been delayed.

Apple has released the latest version of its iOS operating system, iOS 18. The company first showcased the OS during WWDC 2024 in June and began rolling it out to iPhones on Sept. 16.

In many ways, iOS 18 can be considered the biggest iOS update in a while as it introduces big changes in design, features and overall usability.

The iPhone 15 Pros and the new iPhone 16 models also pack some artificial intelligence features you won’t find on other iPhones. I’ll walk you through some of the key iOS 18 features you should know about.

APPLE’S BOLD MOVE INTO AI: NEW IPHONE 16, AIRPODS AND WATCHES

8 iOS 18 features everyone should know about

IOS 18 is a massive update with tons of improvements and new features. I’m not going to dive into every single one, but here are eight of my favorites. I’ve been using some of them for a while now, since I was part of the beta program, which gave me early access.

1. Home Screen customizations

If you’ve been using iPhones for a while, you know Apple hasn’t given you much control over how things look on screen. That changes now with iOS 18 as the company has introduced several new features that let you personalize your iPhone’s Home Screen.

You can now freely place app icons and widgets anywhere within the Home Screen grid. This is something Android users have been flexing on iPhone users about for quite some time. In a way, it makes your iPhone feel a lot more personalized.

Apple is also letting you change the color of your apps and widgets on the Home Screen. You can switch between light and dark mode, and the icons will adjust accordingly if the app has a dark mode icon available.

2. The most significant Photos redesign

This major update to Photos enhances the ease of finding and reliving special moments. The elegant, streamlined layout presents the library with a unified yet familiar view. New collections such as Recent Days, People & Pets, and Trips use on-device intelligence to automatically organize the library, allowing you to spend less time searching and more time enjoying your memories. You can also personalize your experience with a customizable layout that highlights what matters most to you and pin favorite collections for quick access.

3. Locking and hiding apps

There are some apps you might want to keep on your phone but don’t want others to know about. With iOS 18, iPhone users can now lock any app behind Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode, ensuring no one can open the app without your authentication. If you want to take things a step further, you can use the hiding feature.

When you hide an app, it won’t appear in your app library or search results. You won’t receive any notifications from the app unless you open the dedicated hidden folder from the app library. The only way to access this folder is by using Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode.

4. Upgraded Messages app

Apple has added some cool new features to the Messages app. You can now use text effects for specific words in your messages, with options like big, small, shake, nod, explode, ripple, bloom and jitter. Plus, there are new formatting options that are a lot like what you’d find in Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

The Messages app also gets an upgraded Tapback system, so you can react to messages with a wider range of emojis or stickers, not just the Apple-approved ones from before. Another new feature is scheduling, which lets you set messages to be sent at a later time.

5. Siri is getting an AI boost

Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, has been pretty limited so far. It often just points you to Apple’s website or insists on searching the web for almost every question. However, with iOS 18, Apple is giving Siri a major AI upgrade. The new Siri will be able to handle more complex questions and remember what you say, kind of like ChatGPT.

Apple also says Siri will be able to see what’s on your screen and help with any questions you have. Plus, it’ll be able to find specific messages, pictures or files. For example, you could ask Siri to locate the email you received from your colleague about the project last month or show you the recipe you saved for your favorite pasta dish.

However, the new Siri won’t be available with the initial iOS 18 release. Apple says the upgrade is still a work in progress and will be coming either near the end of the year or at the beginning of 2025.

6. Control Center changes

The Control Center gets a new multipage layout with a Controls Gallery where third-party developers can add their own widgets. You can even swap the new controls onto the lock screen, replacing the flashlight and camera icons.

Apple has also introduced a new API that lets third-party apps add controls to the revamped Control Center. For example, Apple has shown how the Ford app will use this API to let you start your vehicle, open the trunk and more right from the Control Center.

7. RCS (rich communication service) support

You won’t really notice or get much out of RCS if most of your friends and family use iPhones. RCS is designed to improve texting between iPhone and Android devices.

It’s an upgrade from SMS/MMS. It adds things like typing indicators, delivery and read receipts, higher-quality photos and videos, and the ability to text over Wi-Fi or mobile data instead of just relying on your carrier’s network. It also makes it easier to manage group chats, like letting you leave conversations.

8. iPhone mirroring

With iOS 18, Apple has made it easier for iPhones and Macs to work together. The new iPhone Mirroring feature lets you control your iPhone directly from your Mac by showing your iPhone’s screen on your Mac. You can use your Mac’s mouse, keyboard and trackpad to manage iPhone apps, check notifications and more. This feature will basically create a digital version of your iPhone on your Mac.

What about all the AI features?

Most of the AI features under Apple Intelligence won’t be available with the initial iOS 18 release. As I mentioned earlier, these will roll out in later iOS 18 updates, possibly at the end of this year or early 2025. However, the features I talked about earlier will be ready right after you install the iOS 18 update, except for the upgraded Siri.

How to install iOS 18 update?

  • Tap on Settings
  • Tap on General
  • Tap on Software Update
  • If an update is available, it will give you the option to download and install.

To keep your phone up to date, you can turn on automatic updates. Just go to the Software Update screen, click on “Automatic Updates” and switch on all the services you want to update automatically.

Kurt’s key takeaway

iOS 18 is an exciting upgrade with lots of improvements for your iPhone. You can personalize your phone and use cool features like iPhone Mirroring to better connect with your other Apple devices. The Messages app now includes fun effects to spice up your texting experience. However, it’s a bit disappointing that the Apple Intelligence features, which have been hyped since WWDC, won’t be available right away with the initial release.

Avoid donation scams this election

0

As election season approaches, you’ll no doubt feel the emotional heat rising across the nation with voices arguing passionately for and against hot-button issues. When emotions run high, it’s important to be aware that bad actors may try to exploit your passion and trick you. Scammers prey on emotion, and the more you care, the more vulnerable you might become.

You may want to participate in polls and surveys to have your voice heard, but be cautious, scammers can use this desire to build trust. Your urge to donate to help your candidate win and improve your country or community is admirable, but scammers are eager to take advantage of your drive to make a difference and your big heart.

Remember that elections are polarizing; there are winners and losers, fans and opponents. It’s easy to get swept up in the moment and take risks you might otherwise avoid. Here are some ways to spot common scams to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

Fake candidate websites and social media accounts

One of the most concerning trends right now is the emergence of fake candidate websites and social media accounts. Scammers are increasingly creating these fraudulent platforms, impersonating political candidates such as presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

The scammers’ goal is to mislead potential donors into contributing to donation pages that do not benefit the actual campaigns. According to the Better Business Bureau, these scams exploit the public’s desire to support their preferred candidates, often resulting in significant financial losses for unsuspecting donors. Let’s look at the various other tactics scammers use and how you can protect yourself from falling victim to these deceptive schemes.

HOW TO RECLAIM YOUR PHONE AND BLOCK UNWELCOME POLITICAL TEXT MESSAGES

Robocalls using candidates’ voices

Another tactic employed by scammers involves robocalls that feature audio clips of prominent political figures. Some scam political action committees (PACs) have been known to use snippets of former President Trump’s voice to convince potential donors that they are contributing to his re-election efforts. However, the funds collected through these scam calls end up lining the pockets of the scammers. Reports indicate that these robocalls often pressure individuals into making immediate donations, creating a sense of urgency that can cloud judgment.

Political donation text scams

In addition to robocalls and fake websites, political donation text scams have become increasingly prevalent. Scammers often send unsolicited text messages that appear to be from legitimate political campaigns, urging you to donate, participate in polls or provide personal information. Be cautious, as scammers can use this approach to build trust. These messages can be misleading, using urgent language to create a sense of panic or obligation.

Recognizing red flags of political donation scams

When considering a donation, it is important to be aware of certain red flags that may indicate a scam:

Poor grammar and spelling: If you receive an email or text message filled with poor grammar and spelling, this is often a sign that the communication is not from a legitimate source.

Pressure for immediate donations: Be cautious if callers or texters pressure you for immediate donations or create a sense of urgency.

Unusual payment methods: Legitimate campaigns typically don’t request payment via wire transfer or prepaid cards.

Unsolicited requests for personal information: Be wary of unsolicited communications asking for sensitive data like social security numbers or birth dates.

Offers of prizes or gift cards: Legitimate pollsters don’t usually offer prizes for completing surveys. If you’re asked to provide a credit card number to cover shipping for a “free” gift, it’s likely a scam.

Steps to safely donate

To ensure that your contributions are actually supporting the candidates and causes you believe in, it is important to follow a series of proactive steps. These seven precautions will help you navigate the political donation landscape safely and avoid falling victim to scams.

1. Verify official websites

To ensure that your contributions go to the intended candidates and causes, always donate directly through their official websites. Before making a donation, take the time to verify that the website you are visiting is legitimate. Look for secure URLs (https://) and official endorsements to confirm authenticity.

Also, take a moment to assess the situation and ensure that the request is coming from a verified and trustworthy source. If you have any doubts, independently verify the campaign’s contact information through official channels before making any donations. This extra step can help protect you from falling victim to scams and ensure your contributions support the intended cause.

2. Research the organization or PAC

Before committing your financial support, conduct thorough research on the organization or PAC you are considering. Websites like FEC.gov provide valuable information about political action committees, including their financial practices and transparency. This research can help you make informed decisions about where to direct your donations.

3. Use secure payment methods

When making a donation, it is advisable to use a credit card rather than other forms of payment, such as wire transfers or prepaid cards. Credit cards offer an additional layer of protection against fraud, allowing you to dispute charges if necessary. This step can help safeguard your financial information and ensure that your contributions are secure.

4. Be wary of unsolicited communications

Exercise caution when responding to unsolicited emails, calls or text messages requesting donations. If you receive an email or message filled with poor grammar and spelling, it is often a sign that the communication is not from a legitimate source. Additionally, be on the lookout for callers or texters who pressure you for immediate donations or ask for personal information. Legitimate campaigns typically do not engage in these practices.

5. Never click on links

Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails, texts or social media messages. Scammers often use these links to direct you to fake websites designed to steal your personal information or money.

The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

6. Use a data removal service

Consider using a data removal service to protect your personal information. These services can help remove your data from public databases and reduce the risk of identity theft. By limiting the amount of personal information available online, you can decrease the chances of being targeted by scammers.

While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

7. Report suspected scams

If you encounter a suspicious political donation solicitation, it is essential to take action. Reporting the scam to the FBI and your state attorney general’s office can help protect others from falling victim to similar schemes. Additionally, use the reporting tools provided by social media platforms to flag any posts that appear to spread false information about candidates or voting. By raising awareness and warning your friends and family about potential scams, you can contribute to a more informed electorate.

Kurt’s key takeaways

As the election season heats up, it is crucial to remain vigilant against the rise of political donation scams. By following the steps I’ve outlined above, you can help ensure that your financial support goes to the candidates and causes you believe in rather than to unscrupulous scammers. Your contributions should reflect your values and support the democratic process, not enrich those seeking to exploit it.
