Alzheimer’s disease could be slowed by boosting a certain protein in the brain

Boosting a specific protein in the brain could help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, a new study has found.

The longstanding theory is that Alzheimer’s occurs when a protein called amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) transforms into plaques that build up in the brain, causing damage to neural cells and leading to cognitive decline.

Researchers from the University of Cincinnati have challenged that assumption, instead suggesting that the disease is caused by low levels of healthy, functioning Aβ42, according to a UC press release.

They based this hypothesis on the fact that newly approved monoclonal antibody medications — including lecanemab (Leqembi) and donanemab (Kisunla) — have had the unintended outcome of raising levels of the protein in the brain.

“The new Alzheimer’s treatments, which were designed to remove amyloid plaques, unintentionally raised Aβ42 levels, and this may explain their positive effects on cognition as much as — or better than — amyloid reduction,” lead study author Alberto J. Espay, MD, professor of neurology at the Gardner Family Center for Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders at UC, told Fox News Digital via email.

“Higher Aβ42 levels after treatment were associated with slower cognitive decline, suggesting that restoring this protein to normal levels might be more beneficial for Alzheimer’s patients than removing amyloid.”

In the study, the researchers reviewed data from nearly 26,000 Alzheimer’s patients who participated in 24 randomized clinical trials for the newly approved antibody treatments.

They compared the cognitive abilities of patients before and after taking the new medications, and found that the increased amounts of Aβ42 were linked to “slower cognitive impairment and clinical decline.”

The findings were published in the medical journal Brain on Sept. 11.

Understanding amyloid

Amyloid plaques aren’t necessarily a bad thing, according to the researchers.

“Along with other studies, the collective evidence suggests that amyloid plaques are a response of a normally reactive brain to many stressors, some infectious, some toxic, some biological,” Espay told Fox News Digital.

“They are a sign the brain is dealing with a stressor appropriately.”

The researcher referred to amyloid plaques as “the tombstones of Aβ42,” noting that they can’t do anything harmful to the brain.

“Most researchers do not believe Alzheimer’s is driven by only one biological mechanism.”

“Amyloid plaques don’t cause Alzheimer’s, but if the brain makes too much of them while defending against infections, toxins or biological changes, it can’t produce enough Aβ42, causing its levels to drop below a critical threshold,” he said.

“That’s when dementia symptoms emerge.” 

The study questions the long-entrenched idea that amyloid plaques directly cause Alzheimer’s and that removing them is part of the solution.

“Building the levels of Aβ42 without removing amyloid — which is quite futile, and can be harmful — is worth testing as a future therapy,” Espay added.  

Looking ahead, the UC research team plans to investigate therapies that directly increase Aβ42 levels without targeting amyloid.

‘A very complex disease’

Ozama Ismail, PhD, director of scientific programs at the Alzheimer’s Association in Washington, D.C., was not involved in UC’s study, but commented on the findings.

“While this Aβ42-related hypothesis may turn out to be a part of what causes and encourages progression of Alzheimer’s, it is a very complex disease, and most researchers do not believe Alzheimer’s is driven by only one biological mechanism,” he told Fox News Digital.

“Beta amyloid is certainly an important and key player, but we also know that tau protein, the immune system, vascular system, metabolic health, environment and more all play a role in the disease process.”

While FDA-approved drugs targeting amyloid are now available and in use, Ismail calls for a comprehensive approach to Alzheimer’s treatment that involves multiple approaches.

He recommends “a combination of therapies targeting multiple mechanisms, as well as lifestyle interventions, much like how other major diseases like diabetes, HIV/AIDS and heart disease are treated.”

Added Ismail, “Understanding the entire underlying biology and related mechanisms is important to expand our pipeline of treatments and prevention strategies.”

Potential limitations

Espay also acknowledged the limitation that none of the published studies have allowed access to the individual-level data.

Russian military aircraft detected off Alaskan coast for 4th time since 9/11

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said it detected Russian military aircraft off the coast of Alaska on Sunday, marking the fourth time since 9/11 amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Russia.

Two Russian IL-38 military planes operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone, or ADIZ, were detected and tracked on Sunday, NORAD said in a news release.

The aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace, NORAD said, adding that this Russian activity in the Alaska ADIZ happens regularly and is not believed to be a threat.

The aircraft in the other three incidents in the past week — on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday — also remained in international airspace in Alaska’s ADIZ and were not viewed as a threat, according to NORAD.

The U.S. and Canada, which together make up NORAD, first intercepted a couple of Russian military aircraft on Wednesday.

A pair of TU-142s were detected by NORAD on Friday. And on Saturday, two Russian IL-38 planes were intercepted, the same type of aircraft intercepted in Sunday’s incident.

An ADIZ begins where sovereign airspace ends and is a defined stretch of international airspace requiring the ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security, NORAD said.

NORAD said it employs a layered defense network of satellites, ground-based and airborne radars and fighter aircraft to detect and track aircraft and inform appropriate actions. The company said it is prepared to employ a number of response options to defend North America.

Earlier this summer, NORAD intercepted two Russian and two Chinese bombers flying near Alaska for the first time that the two countries have been intercepted while operating together, U.S. officials said at the time.

Harris sat for two taped radio interviews last week, and she gave her first solo television interview as the Democratic nominee on Friday in Philadelphia.

As for when she’ll actually do a formal press conference, that day may never come, at least while she’s still a candidate.

Conservative Radio Libre host Jorge Bonilla feels Harris should do a press conference but said it’s almost “irrelevant” because she continues to get a pass.

Toyota has a data dilemma after hackers leak 240GB of customer information

A threat actor leaked Toyota’s customer data on a dark web forum. The file shared by the hacker contained 240GB of data, including contact and financial information, emails and more. 

The Japanese automaker acknowledged the leak but later backtracked, claiming it wasn’t a breach and that the data was stolen from a third-party entity misrepresented as Toyota. 

Below, I discuss the security incident in detail, along with tips on how to protect yourself from being targeted by hackers.

What you need to know about the breach

A hacker group called ZeroSevenGroup claimed on a dark web forum that it stole 240GB of data from Toyota, including info on employees, customers, contract  and financial details, according to Bleeping Computer. It also said it gathered network infrastructure info and credentials using ADRecon, an open-source tool that pulls loads of data from active directory systems.

“We have hacked a branch in United States to one of the biggest automotive manufacturer in the world (TOYOTA). We are really glad to share the files with you here for free. The data size: 240 GB,” the threat actor claimed.

The hacker specifically claimed to have access to everything: contacts, financial data, customer info, schemes, employee details, photos, databases, network infrastructure, emails and “a lot of perfect data.”

It’s not clear exactly when the breach happened, but Bleeping Computer found that the files were stolen — or at least created — Dec. 25, 2022. This lines up with a data breach around the same time that hit Toyota’s subsidiary, Toyota Financial Services (TFS). Back then, the company warned customers that their data had been compromised. But there’s no confirmation if the two incidents are related.

Toyota’s response

“We are aware of the situation. The issue is limited in scope and is not a system\wide issue,” Toyota told Bleeping Computer when asked to verify the hacker’s claims. The company also mentioned that it’s “engaged with those who are impacted and will provide assistance if needed.”

However, the next day, a spokesperson informed the site that Toyota Motor North America’s systems were “not breached or compromised” and that the data was stolen from what appears to be “a third-party entity that is misrepresented as Toyota.”

The spokesperson declined to reveal the name of the breached third party, saying Toyota Motor North America was not at liberty to disclose that information.

These recurring issues point to potential systemic weaknesses in Toyota’s cybersecurity infrastructure and practices.

Below are a few ways to protect yourself following the Toyota breach.

1. Enable two-factor authentication: Activate two-factor authentication (2FA) on any accounts tied to Toyota services, including email, financial accounts and customer portals. It adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second piece of information, like a code sent to your phone, along with your password when logging in. This makes it much more difficult for hackers to access your accounts, even if your password has been compromised. By enabling 2FA, you can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access and better protect your sensitive data in light of the Toyota breach.

2. Use personal data removal services: Consider investing in personal data removal services that specialize in continuously monitoring and removing your personal information from various online databases and websites. Microplastics are defined as tiny plastic particles that measure less than 5 millimeters in size. These minuscule fragments originate from various sources, which include the breakdown of larger plastic items that have been discarded, microbeads found in personal care products like exfoliating scrubs, synthetic fibers that shed from clothing during washing and even tire particles that are released from vehicles and washed into storm drains. Once in our waterways, these tiny plastics can eventually make their way into our drinking water, posing a hidden threat to our health.

How much plastic are we actually drinking?

Research has shown that microplastics can be found in both tap water and bottled water, with concentrations varying widely depending on the source. Studies indicate that microplastic levels in bottled water tend to be higher than those found in tap water. Concentrations can range from a mere 0.0001 particles per liter to a staggering 930 particles per liter in tap water. These findings raise alarming questions about the safety of the water we consume daily, as reusable plastic bottles may release even more microplastics than single-use bottles.

A breakthrough in microplastic detection

Until recently, detecting microplastics in water samples required expensive lab equipment and trained technicians. However, researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) have developed a game-changing tool to address this issue. Dr. Tianxi Yang and his team have created a small, portable device that can accurately measure microplastics in water samples within minutes.

The innovative tool consists of a 3D-printed box containing a wireless digital microscope, a green LED and an excitation filter. It works in conjunction with a smartphone app that uses machine learning to analyze images from the microscope. The device requires only a tiny amount of water — less than a drop — mixed with a special solution that makes microplastics fluoresce under green light.

In tests using disposable polystyrene cups, the UBC team found that each cup released “hundreds of millions” of nano-sized particles into just 50 milliliters of water. This discovery highlights the prevalence of microplastics in everyday items and the potential for significant exposure through drinking water.

‘Dead butt syndrome’ could happen after sitting too long, here’s how to avoid it

Sitting for prolonged periods is known to raise the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity — but it can also contribute to “dead butt syndrome,” according to health experts who specialize in musculoskeletal injuries.

The condition, otherwise known as gluteal amnesia, involves numbness or pain in the buttocks, or pain in the upper thigh and hip, after prolonged sitting.

“The term gluteal amnesia, or ‘dead butt,’ can correlate with difficulty feeling or accessing glute activation in a particular exercise or activity,” Dr. Carrie Pagliano, a physical therapist in Arlington, Virginia, and spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), told Fox News Digital.

Over time, sitting for long periods can result in a “tug of war” scenario between muscles in the front (hip flexors) and those in the back of the hip (the glutes).

“The hip flexors shorten and tighten, and the gluteal muscles get over lengthened, leading to inefficient muscle activation,” Tamar Amitay, a licensed physical therapist and owner of Thrive Integrated Physical Therapy in New York City, told Fox News Digital.

This muscle imbalance can literally become a “pain in the butt,” especially for those who sit for long hours on a daily basis, experts agreed.

“The term ‘dead butt syndrome’ is simply a weakening and deconditioning of the glute muscles and associated tightening of muscles opposing them, creating an imbalance of the musculature and function,” Edward Farrell, an orthopedic physical therapist at Physical Solutions Physical Therapy and Fitness on Long Island, New York, told Fox News Digital.

Farrell often sees patients who suffer from pain and tightness in the hips and buttocks, along with discomfort in the lower back. 

“Older patients will often report long days at work sitting at their desk, and younger patients may have a habit of spending hours playing video games or social media surfing,” he told Fox News Digital.

“Once we can resolve the acute issue, the take-home message is to get up and move around every once in a while.”

With dead butt syndrome, the glute muscle doesn’t actually die, but rather “shuts down,” meaning it does not contract as efficiently, the experts said. This can lead to other issues down the road.

“The condition can actually become quite serious,” Farrell warned.

“The glutes — the gluteus medius in particular — act as stabilizers, providing lateral support with walking and running,” he went on. “If these muscles become weakened and less efficient, more stress is passed onto the lower back and other areas of the hip and thigh.”

When the pelvis is not stabilized, the hip can drop on one side, causing stress and pain in the hip and spine and even down the kinetic chain to the knee, according to Amitay. This can also affect how a person walks.

Diagnosis of the condition

If someone is experiencing dead butt syndrome, a physician may recommend the Trendelenburg test, which can indicate weakness of the glute muscles responsible for hip abduction, according to experts.

With the test, the patient stands on one leg (holding onto an object if needed to avoid falling) for up to 30 seconds. If the pelvis drops on the contralateral side (the side not bearing weight), it indicates weakness in the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles, according to peer-reviewed studies.

Some patients may complain that they don’t feel their gluteal muscles contract strongly when performing glute-targeted exercises, such as a bridge, physical therapists noted.

“If you’re doing glute exercises and can’t feel your glutes, it’s worth consulting with a physical therapist to determine why you’re experiencing difficulty accessing these muscles,” Pagliano told Fox News Digital. 

Recommended treatment

Treatments for gluteal amnesia may include therapies to help alleviate pain and tightness, such as moist heat, electrical stimulation, ultrasound and ice, Farrell noted.

“Once symptoms lessen, exercises [are performed] to strengthen the abductors and glutes, such as squats, side clamshells and side leg lifts, as well as stretching for the hip flexors, ITB band and piriformis,” he said. 

“Once we can resolve the acute issue, the take-home message is to get up and move around every once in a while.”

In many cases, physical therapy sessions may be needed to strengthen the muscles and increase flexibility, according to Pagliano.

Targeted exercises that optimize core strength and muscle balance can also help to prevent and reverse dead butt syndrome, she said.

Lifestyle changes, such as using a standing desk and setting a timer to remind you to get up from your chair and move around, can also help, Amitay advised.

Several physical therapists recommended getting up every 30 minutes and walking around for a minute or two to help mitigate the negative effects of sitting for too long.

Standing during phone calls and taking walks during lunch hours can also help decrease the amount of time spent sitting, they advised.

Following a general exercise routine that incorporates stretching, strengthening and cardio workouts is also widely recommended.

American Airlines carefully details what is required of passengers in its “conditions of carriage” contract.

In an effort to create a safe environment for all aboard, the airlines require everyone to “dress appropriately,” which means “bare feet or offensive clothing aren’t allowed,” according to American Airlines.

Rule No. 21 on United Airlines’ “Contract of Carriage” is “Refusal of Transport” which is made up of a variety of different reasons why someone may be denied entry onto the plane or possibly removal.

One of the variables listed includes, “passengers who are barefoot, not properly clothed, or whose clothing is lewd, obscene or offensive.”

Some airlines only allow those of a certain age to go barefoot while flying.

For the “comfort and safety” of those on the carrier, Southwest Airlines notes that its staff may remove someone if they are barefoot and above the age of 5, or without a disability that requires them to be barefoot.

JetBlue Airways is another airline that abides by the same age rule, according to its carriage contract.

While this rule seems to be popular among U.S.-based airlines, not all foreign airlines have this ban listed in conduct contracts.

Air Canada, Air France or even British Airways, to name a few, do not have any rules listed in the airlines’ contract of carriage that allow for the removal of a passenger for being barefoot.

Each contract uses the word “may be required,” meaning it is not a hard and fast rule that passengers must follow.

Even though wearing socks is not necessarily required, there could be some fair reasons to keep your toes tucked away while on board.

Jacqueline Whitmore, an etiquette expert, said it is best to keep your feet covered in some capacity.

“From an etiquette standpoint, it is rude to walk about barefooted in a public place as many germs can be transmitted from your feet,” Whitmore, who is based in Florida, told Fox News Digital.

“If you plan to take off your shoes on a longer flight, it’s best not to walk around without slippers for your own health and safety. The floor of the plane is extremely dirty, especially in the lavatory. The water on the floor is most likely not water at all.”

Whitmore also said that being barefoot can impact those around you.

If you want to get comfortable, but remain hygienic, Whitemore suggests putting on a clean pair of socks, slipping on your slippers or wearing more comfortable shoes.

Wittenberg University in Ohio cancels events, increases security after shooting threat

A university in Ohio announced it is canceling campus activities on Sunday and is increasing the number of police officers on campus after receiving a shooting threat.

“Wittenberg University is currently taking extreme precautions following an email that threatened a potential shooting on campus tomorrow, Sunday, September 15, 2024. The message targeted Haitian members of our community,” the university, located in Springfield, said in an alert to students.

In the statement, Wittenberg Police said it is cooperating with the Springfield Police Division and the FBI to investigate the shooting threat.

Students, faculty and staff are urged to be cautious and alert of their surroundings. Anyone who will be on or near campus should prepare for additional instructions or a potential lockdown.

All campus activities scheduled for Sunday have been canceled.

“University administrators recognize that the city of Springfield has experienced an increase of threats to local government, businesses, and schools in the past week,” the university said. “We take this threat seriously and will provide updates to the campus as we learn more about the situation.”

The alert comes amid national attention given to Springfield and its Haitian migrants from former President Trump, his running mate, Sen. JD Vance R-Ohio, and others.

In the alert, the university provided several safety tips for students and those who visit the campus.

“Always be aware of your surroundings when you are out and about on campus or in the community. Close and lock your room door when you are sleeping or studying in your room. Report unusual activities or suspicious individuals immediately to the campus police, including those outside of residence halls and housing. Be alert of strangers who might attend gatherings at your residence and take action to address their presence by calling Wittenberg Police to respond. Do not allow others to ‘tailgate’ behind you to gain entry into a secured building or space,” the notice read. 

It also said: “Threats towards our campus community are unacceptable. We encourage you to report any crime to law enforcement.”

Anyone who observes suspicious activity is encouraged to contact the Wittenberg Police Division immediately at its emergency line, 937-327-6363. The non-emergency line is 937-327-6231.

Springfield, a city of roughly 60,000, has seen its Haitian population grow in recent years. The city says the Haitian migrants are in the country legally under a federal program that allows them to temporarily be there.
