54 days: Kamala Harris has yet to do formal press conference since emerging as Democratic nominee

0

Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 54 days as the presumptive, and now, official Democratic nominee for president without holding an official press conference.

She and former President Trump met on Tuesday at the ABC News Presidential Debate.

Under pressure to sit down for a substantive interview after weeks of stonewalling, Harris finally ended her interview drought last month when she was joined by running mate Tim Walz for a pre-taped piece with CNN’s Dana Bash last Thursday in Georgia that was a far cry from a traditional press conference.

“Anyone who wants to lead the free world should be able to handle questions from the press,” conservative influencer Tim Young told Fox News Digital. “If Kamala can’t handle real questions from the press, she absolutely can’t handle negotiations with foreign leaders.”

Harris also sat for two taped radio interviews last week, which aired Friday and Monday.

As to when she’ll actually do a formal press conference, that day may never come, at least while she’s still a candidate.

Conservative Radio Libre host Jorge Bonilla feels Harris should do a press conference but said it’s almost “irrelevant” because she continues to get a pass.

VOTERS REPORT KAMALA HARRIS IS MORE RADICAL THAN TRUMP: ‘TOO LIBERAL OR PROGRESSIVE’

“She is highly unlikely to do a press conference because the media have enabled and encouraged her ‘plexiglass basement’ strategy, wherein she preserves the illusion of being out there while remaining wholly inaccessible to the press and therefore unaccountable,” Bonilla told Fox News Digital.

Harris and Walz interview

Meaike believes the approach is “disrespectful” to Americans.

“As a businessman, I couldn’t imagine if the company was just tumbling in the wrong direction. And I said, or any leader said, ‘Hey, guess what? I’m just not going to talk to anyone. I’m not going to take any questions,’” Meaike told said.

“I don’t think we see Harris in a press conference where there is anyone that’s going to ask her a question that isn’t a softball,” he added. “I think Harris will continue to avoid anything remotely confrontational.”

Trump has sought to highlight the contrast in media availability between the two, sitting for several lengthy interviews in recent weeks and also holding a pair of press conferences last month.

Harris received mixed reviews for her showing with Bash, where she took the majority of the questions but nevertheless had Walz there for support.

“My fear is, because Bash wasn’t like, say, CBS’s Steve Kroft or NPR’s Steve Inskeep salivating at the sight of Barack Obama, the liberal media will claim this and the upcoming ABC debate are sufficient interview time for the campaign,” Houck said.

Arizona man blows Lego out of nose after three decades: ‘I can breathe now’

0

An Arizona man got the surprise of a lifetime when he blew his nose and out popped a nearly 30-year-old Lego.

Ben Havoc took to Instagram earlier this month to explain how a small Lego dot from the 1990s was finally dislodged.

When he was about 6 years old, he stuck a tiny, circular Lego up his nose, he said in a video post.

WOMAN OBSESSED WITH LEGOS BUILDS 6-FOOT-TALL DOGHOUSE FOR HER PETS: ‘SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND PIECES’

“I don’t know why I did that,” he laughed. “I was one of those children.”

After recognizing that the piece was too small for him to grab himself, Havoc sent a “little Lego man” on a “rescue mission” to retrieve the yellow dot.

“I stuck the Lego man in my nose and, of course, the Lego head popped off,” he said. “So now that was also stuck in my nose.”

“I can breathe out of this side of my nose now, and it’s fantastic.”

At this point, Havoc said, he “panicked loudly,” and his mother ran in with a pair of tweezers to remove what she thought was the only stuck Lego piece.

Now 32 years old, Havoc has suffered from health problems, including asthma and sleep apnea.

His doctor recommended blowing his nose in the shower during the dry Arizona summer months to take advantage of the steam and humidity.

After regularly doing this for the last six months, Havoc suddenly blew out the Lego dot that had been in his nose for a suspected 26 years.

“I don’t know what to think of this,” he said. “I just got diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and I feel like this Lego piece has been the culprit … I’m shooketh.”

“I can breathe out of this side of my nose now, and it’s fantastic,” he added. “I haven’t been able to do that since I was a child.”

Havoc placed the Lego piece in a bag and intends to bring it to his doctor for further evaluation.

What to do if an object gets stuck

If a foreign object becomes lodged in the nose, it’s important to remove it right away, especially if it’s a magnet, battery or an object that expands when it gets wet, according to Mayo Clinic’s website.

HISTORY OF LEGOS: FUN FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT THE ‘TOY OF THE CENTURY’

The health system recommended applying “positive pressure” by blowing out of the nose to try and free the object while holding the opposite nostril closed.

Parents can attempt to give a “parent’s kiss” by placing their mouth over their child’s mouth and giving a short puff of air to push the object out, Mayo Clinic stated.

If the object is in sight and easy to grasp, it may be possible to remove it with tweezers.

Experts advise against poking the object with fingers or cotton swabs, as that could cause swelling or choking, or could end up pushing the item even further inside the nose.

Do not inhale or wash out the object, as that is a choking hazard, the clinic warned.

If there are symptoms of infection, it’s recommended to seek medical assistance immediately.

‘Dual action’ weight-loss pill helps people drop 13% of body weight in three months in early trials

0

An experimental weight-loss pill is showing promising results, helping people drop 13% of their body weight in a three-month period.

The results from early clinical trials were presented by Novo Nordisk — the Danish drugmaker behind Ozempic and Wegovy — at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in Madrid this week.

The drug, amycretin, works by replicating two hunger hormones — amylin, which regulates appetite and creates a feeling of fullness, and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), the same hormone that is used in Ozempic and Wegovy to suppress appetite and boost insulin secretion.

‘SIX-PACK SURGERY’ GAINING POPULARITY AMONG MEN, SAY PLASTIC SURGEONS

“Amycretin is the first treatment to harness the two distinct biological pathways stimulated by amylin and GLP-1 in a single molecule,” Martin Holst Lange, executive vice president and head of development at Novo Nordisk, said in a statement sent to Fox News Digital.

An experimental weight-loss pill is showing promising results, helping people drop 13% of their body weight in a three-month period. (iStock)

“We are proud to present the phase 1 study results at EASD, showing that the mean change in percentage body weight was -13.1% with amycretin after 12 weeks of treatment.”

While Ozempic and Wegovy are administered via injection, amycretin is given as a 50-milligram oral pill.

The clinical trial included participants who were obese or overweight but did not have diabetes. Those who took amycretin for 12 weeks lost more weight than those on a placebo — and higher doses led to more weight loss, according to Novo Nordisk.

OZEMPIC PUSH FOR SENIORS? SOME DOCTORS SAY MORE PEOPLE AGE 65 AND OVER SHOULD BE ON IT

Taking the pill once a day led to around 10% weight loss, and those who doubled the dose lost 13%.

Another benefit the researchers highlighted is that people taking amycretin did not appear to hit a “weight loss plateau,” continuing to shed pounds as long as they took it.

Novo Nordisk

“The lack of weight loss plateauing indicates the possibility of achieving further weight reductions with extended treatment,” Agnes Gasoirek, a senior clinical pharmacology specialist at Novo Nordisk, wrote in the study findings.

‘Dual effect’

Dr. Christine Ren-Fielding, director and chief of bariatric surgery at the NYU Langone Weight Management Program, commented on the drug’s effectiveness.

OBESITY MAKES PEOPLE MORE LIKELY TO CATCH COVID, STUDY SUGGESTS: ‘INDISPUTABLE RELATIONSHIP’

“GLP-1-based treatments, like Ozempic, have already shown impressive weight loss results by helping patients feel fuller for longer and reducing appetite,” the doctor, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital.

“Adding amylin, another hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating insulin and hunger signals, amplifies this effect.”

Adding amylin, a hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating insulin and hunger signals, amplifies the effect of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, a doctor said.

This “dual action” creates a more powerful tool to manage cravings and caloric intake, according to Ren-Fielding.

“It’s particularly interesting because it addresses weight management through multiple physiological pathways, making it more comprehensive and potentially more effective than conventional treatments that typically focus on a single mechanism,” she added.

Potential risks or side effects

The most commonly reported side effects of amycretin include gastrointestinal issues like nausea and vomiting, more so with higher doses, according to Novo Nordisk.

“These adverse effects are not unusual with GLP-1 receptor agonists, which are known to affect gastric motility,” Ren-Fielding noted.

“It addresses weight management through multiple physiological pathways.”

It’s important to monitor these side effects closely, she advised, as GI issues are common among patients with obesity.

“While the initial weight loss outcomes are indeed encouraging, further studies are needed to ensure that the therapeutic benefits consistently outweigh the potential risks, especially with long-term administration,” Ren-Fielding added.

‘Not a cure-all’

While GLP-1 based drugs — including this new experimental pill — may show promising results, Ren-Fielding emphasized that they’re “not a cure-all for obesity.”

“Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease that requires a comprehensive, long-term approach,” she told Fox News Digital.

“Pharmacological treatments can play a significant role in managing the condition, but they are often most effective when combined with other interventions.”

“Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease that requires a comprehensive, long-term approach,” a doctor told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

Some patients may benefit from surgical interventions, the doctor said, along with lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, healthy eating and psychological support to address underlying behavioral factors.

“It’s important to recognize that obesity is not just about weight loss — it’s a lifelong condition that requires ongoing management, much like any other chronic disease,” she added.

Next steps

The results of the study are considered preliminary, as they have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

The researchers will continue to conduct research on amycretin in the coming months, according to Novo Nordisk.

“The safety and tolerability profiles and the magnitude of weight loss support further development of amycretin, and we are awaiting data from the ongoing phase 1 trial with subcutaneous amycretin, with expected read-out in 2025,” Lange said.

“If further research supports these initial findings, I can envision it becoming a viable option for those struggling with obesity.”

Ren-Fielding said there is “certainly potential” for the new drug to get FDA approval, especially considering the effectiveness of GLP-1-based drugs in recent years — but confirmed that much more testing is needed.

“The current clinical trials are promising, but we need larger, long-term studies to really assess the safety and overall benefits of the drug,” she told Fox News Digital.

“If further research supports these initial findings, I can envision it becoming a viable option for those struggling with obesity,” she went on.

“While I’m cautiously optimistic, there’s still a road ahead before we see widespread availability.”

Did you know that baby monitors have been around since the 1930s? Parents have long relied on these devices to keep a watchful eye on their little ones and ensure their safety. Over the years, baby monitors have come a long way, evolving with technology to offer even more features.

However, with these advancements come new challenges, namely, the risk of hacking. Different types of baby monitors come with varying levels of security, which means some are more vulnerable than others.

Here are some practical tips to help you keep your baby monitor safe from hackers so you can have peace of mind while your baby sleeps.

Yes, baby monitors can be hacked

Like most technological devices, baby monitors can be hacked. Several factors, however, determine the susceptibility to hacking, such as overall network security, device security features and type of monitor.

Network security

First, let’s talk about your home Wi-Fi network. You know how you wouldn’t leave your front door wide open, right? Well, an unsecured Wi-Fi network is kind of like that, but for all your online stuff. Think about it. Your baby monitor, your phones, your laptops, even your smart fridge, they’re all hanging out on this network. If it’s not locked down tight with a strong password and solid encryption, it’s like inviting the whole neighborhood to peek through your windows.

Device security

Now let’s chat about your actual baby monitor. You’d think all baby monitors would come with top-notch security, right? Well, sadly, that’s not always the case. Some baby monitors are like fortresses; they encrypt every bit of data they send out. That means all those adorable coos and gurgles (and occasional 3 a.m. screaming sessions) are scrambled up so only you can understand them.

But here’s the catch: Not all baby monitors do this. Some of them are broadcasting your baby’s greatest hits for anyone with the right equipment to tune in. It’s like they’re running their own little radio station, and you definitely don’t want random people tuning in.

So, what’s a parent to do? When you’re shopping for a baby monitor, look for words like “encrypted” or “secure transmission” in the product description. If you can’t find that info, reach out to the manufacturer and ask. Your baby’s privacy is worth the extra effort.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

Understanding baby monitor security

While most types of baby monitors can be hacked, the likelihood and type of hacking varies based on the type of device.

Analog baby monitors: While these operate on older technology, hackers in proximity might be able to intercept their frequency.

Frequency-hopping spread spectrum baby monitors: While these are also analog, their technology switches frequencies quickly, making it much harder to intercept the signal. Of the three different types of baby monitors, these are considered the safest or hardest for hackers to infiltrate.

Internet-enabled baby monitors: These are more modern baby monitors that can be connected to the internet via a wired or wireless connection. These are the easiest to hack because they can be accessed through the internet networks they are connected to, as well as security measures specific to the device, which can be compromised.

HOW TO CHECK IF SOMEONE IS STEALING YOUR WI-FI

How to find out if hackers have compromised your baby monitor

Now that you know baby monitors can be hacked, below are signs that your baby monitor might be hacked.

1. Changes in behavior: If the camera, audio or functions of the baby monitor change suddenly, it can mean someone else has access to your device.

2. Unrecognizable devices on your network: If you’re using an internet-enabled baby monitor and notice any unrecognizable devices connected to your internet network, it could mean that hackers have gained access to your network and that your baby monitor is in jeopardy.

3. Strange audio: If you hear unrecognizable voices or noises coming from your monitor that supports two-way communications, it may mean your baby monitor was hacked.

4. Increase in your data usage: Most monitors use data when being actively viewed or used, so if you notice an increase in data usage, it can mean hackers are accessing it.

5. Security setting changes: Changes to the security settings of your baby monitor, such as password changes or reset requests, can be a red flag. Especially if the password has been changed to access your device, it could mean that hackers have compromised your baby monitor.

HOW YOUR CONNECTED HOME DEVICES COULD BE LEAVING YOU EXPOSED

How to secure your baby monitor

While the level of security will be determined by the type of baby monitor and its individual features, below are some ways to increase the security of your baby monitor:

1. Limit remote access: If possible, disable or limit remote features of the baby monitor when not needed. This reduces potential access points for hackers.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

2. Use a strong, unique alphanumeric password: Some users use the default password provided by the manufacturer, which leaves those devices as primary targets for hackers. Changing the password to be strong, complex and unique will make it less likely a target for hackers. We’re talking about a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols. And please, for the love of sleepless nights, don’t use “baby123” or your kid’s birthday. Hackers love that stuff. Also, consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

3. Enable additional security features: If your device supports features like two-factor authentication or biometric login, enable them. These add extra layers of security, making it harder for unauthorized users to access your system.

4. Secure your internet network: Make sure the internet network the baby monitor is connecting to is behind a strong password. Consider creating a separate guest network for your baby monitor. Check your router settings via the router’s IP address (often located on the back or underside of the physical router) or through your router’s admin interface. Look for WPA3 encryption; it’s the latest and greatest for keeping your network safe. If that’s not an option, WPA2 is still pretty good. Just steer clear of WEP; it’s about as secure as a paper lock on a bank vault. Check out our “Top Routers for Best Security 2024.”

5. Update your device’s software and firmware: Some baby monitors get firmware and software upgrades to keep up with changing security issues. Keep your device updated so that any known vulnerabilities can’t be exploited by hackers.

6. Turn off the monitor when not in use: This simple step can significantly reduce the window of opportunity for potential hackers.

HOW TO UPDATE ALL OF YOUR DEVICES AND KEEP THEM SAFE

Kurt’s key takeaways

As with any other piece of technology, where hackers can find a vulnerability, they will exploit it. Unfortunately, baby monitors, depending on their type and features, can be as susceptible as any other type of consumer technology. The more connected it is to a network that can be compromised, the more vulnerable it is to hackers. But just like other consumer electronics, key security measures such as strong, complex passwords and two-step authentication can go a long way in dissuading hackers from compromising your baby monitor.

Majority of Americans don’t trust AI chat bots for election information: poll

0

Most Americans do not believe artificial intelligence (AI) is trustworthy for election information.

A poll released Thursday by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and USAFacts found that just under two-thirds of Americans do not trust generative predictions produced by AI.

Approximately 64% of respondents responded to the survey saying that they are not confident that election information generated by AI chatbots is reliably factual.

US INDICTMENT HIGHLIGHTS HOW RUSSIAN HACKERS USED AI IN ELECTION DISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN

In fact, 43% of survey respondents said they believe AI programs will make finding factual information about the presidential election more difficult. Only 16% of respondents said AI programs will make it easier.

AI chatbots are large language model computer programs that allow users to request information using conversational command prompts. Users can ask questions via text input, and the bot will return an answer composed in a similarly conversational format.

Some of the most successful chatbots use thousands of terabytes of collected data to formulate their answers — but programs can only sort, remix and regurgitate information scraped from somewhere else. AI is unable to think or reason like a human.

HOLY SEE URGES ‘MORATORIUM’ ON DEVELOPMENT OF AUTONOMOUS KILLING WEAPONS AT UNITED NATION

In addition to factual errors regularly made by chatbots, AI programs can be used by malicious actors in a variety of ways to spread disinformation.

About 52% of respondents in the AP-NORC poll expressed concern about how AI will compromise their access to verifiable data, compared to just 9% who are excited about AI’s expanding role in the dissemination of information.

While far from perfect, AI programs are becoming increasingly capable of generating realistic images of real-world individuals. Manufactured images of former President Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris and others have become common on social media.

What’s behind those ridiculous random ‘hello’ text messages

0

Across the country, people are experiencing a sudden surge of anonymous messages that often begin with a simple “hello” or a similar greeting like “hi.” These unexpected communications can leave you feeling confused and even concerned about their origins.

While this phenomenon is particularly prevalent on WhatsApp, it’s important to recognize that similar incidents are occurring with regular text messages as well.

Take Bruce from Lititz, Pennsylvania, for example. He wrote to us asking, “Why all of a sudden am I receiving anonymous ‘hello’ messages on my WhatsApp?”

Let’s explore the possible reasons behind these unsolicited messages, how they may have obtained your number and what steps you can take to protect yourself from potential scams.

scam text 1

“Hi” scam text (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

Why is this happening?

One of the primary reasons for these messages is the increasing prevalence of spam and scam attempts. Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, and a seemingly innocent “hello” could be their latest strategy. Sometimes, it’s as simple as someone mistyping a number. It’s easy for messages to end up in the wrong inbox.

However, more often than not, these messages are the first step in a more elaborate phishing scheme. Scammers often start with a friendly greeting to build trust before attempting to extract personal information.

HOW TO RECLAIM YOUR PHONE AND BLOCK UNWELCOME POLITICAL TEXT MESSAGES

How did they get your number in the first place?

Receiving unexpected messages from unknown contacts can leave you wondering how they obtained your number. There are several ways this can happen. One common method is through data breaches, where personal information, including phone numbers, is leaked online.

Scammers can also acquire numbers through social media platforms, where users often share their contact details publicly. Additionally, if you’ve ever participated in contests or giveaways, your information may have been sold to third parties without your consent.

Lastly, it’s possible that someone you know inadvertently shared your number, leading to these unsolicited messages. Understanding these avenues can help you take proactive steps to protect your privacy and reduce the likelihood of receiving unwanted communications in the future.

A good night’s sleep has many proven benefits — potentially including a healthier future for kids.

New research from Penn State University analyzed how childhood sleep patterns could be linked to future substance use.

Researchers at the university found that adolescents who went to bed later and slept fewer hours during their childhood were more likely to have consumed alcohol or marijuana by the age of 15.

‘NAPUCCINO’ TREND: CAFFEINE BEFORE A NAP COULD BE KEY TO BETTER SLEEP

The study, published in the journal Annals of Epidemiology, looked at data of 1,514 children from 20 cities across the U.S., focusing on sleep duration and bedtime in different developmental stages.

Recent research found that teens were 45% more likely to try alcohol by the age of 15 if they had a later bedtime at age 9. (iStock)

Parents involved in the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, from where the data was obtained, recorded their children’s bedtimes at ages 3, 5 and 9, as well as sleep duration at 5 and 9.

The results showed that teens were 45% more likely to try alcohol by age 15 if they had a later bedtime at age 9.

Bedtime at age 5, however, wasn’t associated with future alcohol use, nor was sleep duration at either age.

GOING TO BED AFTER THIS TIME COULD LEAD TO POORER MENTAL HEALTH, A STANFORD STUDY FINDS

Meanwhile, a later bedtime at age 5 was associated with a 26% increased likelihood of marijuana use by age 15.

Sleeping an hour less at age 9 led to a 19% increased chance of trying marijuana during adolescence.

A later bedtime at age 5 was associated with a 26% increased likelihood of marijuana use by age 15.  (iStock)

15-year-olds also reported their bedtime, sleep duration and substance use, which revealed that those with a later bedtime had a 39% increased chance of drinking alcohol and a 34% chance of trying marijuana.

“By ensuring that children get adequate and high-quality sleep, we may protect long-term health and encourage positive health behaviors later in life.”

Adolescents who slept one hour less increased their odds of trying alcohol by 28%, but there was no association with marijuana.

SLEEPING LONGER ON WEEKENDS COULD LOWER HEART DISEASE RISK BY 20%, STUDY FINDS

In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, study co-author David A. Reichenberger, PhD — a researcher in the Department of Biobehavioral Health at Penn State — noted that the study only included participants who had complete data, “so that we could assess the effects across time within the same set of kids.”

“Overall, the implications of our results suggest that sleep may play a crucial role in whether children engage in substance use as teens,” he said.

“By ensuring that children get adequate and high-quality sleep, we may protect long-term health and encourage positive health behaviors later in life,” the researcher added.

Dr. Wendy Troxel, a senior behavioral and social scientist at RAND Corporation in Park City, Utah, shared with Fox News Digital how this study adds to growing evidence that sleep problems may lead to “risky health behaviors” later in life.

“These findings are consistent with my work conducted with my RAND colleagues, showing that poor sleep health in adolescence longitudinally predicts increases in alcohol and marijuana use in early adulthood,” she said.

“Overall, the implications of our results suggest that sleep may play a crucial role in whether children engage in substance use as teens,” a researcher said.  (iStock)

“Importantly, this new data suggests that sleep problems even earlier in life can predict substance use during adolescence — a critical inflection point for the onset and exacerbation of drug and other alcohol use.”

Sleep problems may increase the likelihood of substance use due to affected decision-making, impulse control and emotion regulation skills, according to Troxel.

“Collectively, these findings point to the importance of addressing sleep problems using multi-level strategies, including family-based programs and public policies, such as later school start times, to promote sleep health in childhood and adolescence,” she said.

Travel experts reveal best time to fly before a cruise and why

0

Experienced cruisers likely know how to snag deals, pack with ease and make the most of their time in ports of call.

If you’re new to booking a cruise vacation, it’s worth noting that it could be risky to fly the same day as your cruise departs.

Here’s what travel experts have to say about when you should fly before a cruise and why.

FLORIDA WOMAN HAS TRAVELED TO 55 COUNTRIES, SAYS CRUISE SHIP VACATIONS ARE THE WAY TO GO

Canceled or delayed flights could cause you to miss a cruise departure

One easy way to make sure you arrive on time at your planned destination is to actually fly early in hopes of avoiding any flight cancelations that are close to your take-off from your port city. (iStock)

If you are taking an early flight to Miami hoping to board a cruise that day, in many cases it could go smoothly, but be aware that things could go awry without much notice.

Weather, computer glitches, aircraft maintenance issues and even crew matters could all contribute to delayed and canceled flights.

Experts say it’s a better plan to fly the night before a cruise at the very least, but one to two days is ideal to avoid possible travel woes.

“We always, always recommend flying in at least one day early for a cruise – two, if flying internationally,” Chris Gray Faust, a spokesperson with Cruise Critic, who is based in Yardley, Pennsylvania, told Fox News Digital.

You want to leave yourself plenty of time to grab your luggage and a ride before arriving at your cruise’s port location. (iStock)

“The most obvious reason to fly in early is simply to avoid the possibility of not making it to your ship on time, due to airline delays or cancellations, which happen all the time.”

In addition, same-day flights could also cause luggage headaches.

If your luggage goes missing, you’ll be in trouble if your ship is leaving within a few hours.

You’re in a vacation state of mind

For same-day travelers, worrying about delayed or canceled flights can put a damper on your vacation mindset, Gray Faust said.

“Aside from protecting the logistics of arriving to your cruise, coming in early brings you more peace of mind while you’re traveling,” she added.

WARM WEATHER WEAR YOU SHOULD HAVE ON YOUR NEXT CRUISE

“Airline issues are never fun, but everything becomes more frantic when you have a ship departure to make.”

Cruise travelers might decide against exploring the city where they board a ship.

This could create a missed opportunity.

“A benefit of going into a port city one or two days early is the opportunity to explore or get to know the port city better,” Kelly Connor, a travel adviser with AAA Club Alliance in Marlton, New Jersey, told Fox News Digital.

There are many domestic ports that definitely warrant at least two pre-nights before a cruise, she said.

For instance, New Orleans is a popular bucket-list city to visit, and many cruise lines sail out of that port city.

“The city offers fabulous food, wonderful beignets, great music and, of course, the fabulous partying and people-watching along Bourbon Street. It has a southern flavor all its own,” Connor said.

There are also several interesting West Coast cruise ports in California that definitely offer great pre-cruise experiences, including San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“Cruise lines departing from these ports include Holland America, Disney, Celebrity and Norwegian, among others,” Connor added.

15 TRAVEL ESSENTIALS YOU NEED FOR YOUR FIRST CRUISE

“Los Angeles has Hollywood and Rodeo Drive, as well as excellent restaurants and the Walk of Fame – and don’t forget all of the famous celebrities who call L.A. home,” she said.

As for San Diego, the city offers art galleries, a world-famous zoo, beaches and parks.

San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge

And, San Francisco has Ghirardelli Square and the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as amazing restaurants.

Miami is also a lively city to spend time in before a cruise. It offers South Beach, art deco hotels, nightlife and an eclectic culinary and music scene.

A good bet for a pre-cruise stay in Miami is the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, as its South Beach location offers onsite gourmet dining, a year-round kids club, direct beach access and a pool.

The Big Apple has the Empire State Building, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Carnegie Hall, the Cloisters, Central Park and Times Square, as well as many restaurants to try all over the city, Connor noted.

“Overall, I highly recommend pre-nights in departure port cities to give travelers the opportunity to start their vacations early with exploring, whether through day tours we can arrange or exploring on their own,” Connor added.

If you’re taking an international cruise, pre-cruise stays in places like Barcelona, Rome and London often have exceptional sightseeing opportunities as well.

Early travel can allow you to board a ship with ease

When you wake up the morning of your cruise in your port city, you’re well rested, and ready to enjoy your well-deserved vacation on the high seas.

arrive day early for cruise

Avoid flight cancellations, jet lag and anxiety by showing up to your port city the day before your cruise takes off. (iStock)

“Rather than hurrying through the airport, rushing to secure transportation, or zipping to the cruise port right off the plane, arriving early allows you the chance to have a more leisurely experience so the day of boarding is more relaxed and enjoyable,” Gray Faust said.

You can prevent jet lag

If you’re traveling internationally, arriving at least a day or two before your cruise also helps to combat jet lag, Connor said.

“By having a slow day or two before you board, you’ll be able to do so much more on your cruise, since your body has more of a chance to adjust to any time differences,” she added.

While taking a recent cruise from Budapest, Hungary, Gray Faust flew in early and booked a day at a local thermal bath in the city, she said.

“Beyond being an incredible experience, it’s also known to be a fantastic remedy for jet lag,” she continued.

“It was the perfect adjustment ahead of my sailing and meant that I was able to enjoy my first ship excursion rather than yawning the whole time.”

The Pie-Pod® Story: Innovation, Resilience, and a One Bite /Pie-Pod Pizza Challenge for Dave Portnoy That’s Out of This World!

The Pie-Pod® Story: Innovation, Resilience, and a One Bite /Pie-Pod Pizza Challenge for Dave Portnoy That’s Out of This World! 54

Pie-Pod recently launched two slices of pizza into the stratosphere. Now they’re challenging Dave Portnoy, the pizza legend behind Barstool Sports, to taste test these slices after reheating them on a Pie-Pod crisper pan. The challenge, if accepted, will take place at Dave Portnoy’s One Bite Pizza Festival, hosted by Medium Rare, this weekend on Randall’s Island in NYC.

Davie, Florida, September 11, 2024, In a world where innovation drives the market, the creators of Pie-Pod®, a unique product designed for optimal pizza storage and reheating, have a story that almost never saw the light of day. After years of development, they introduced a solution that allows pizza lovers to store and reheat their favorite leftover slices with a microwave crisper pan, ensuring a fresh, crispy bite every time. Unfortunately, their chance to take the online marketplace by storm encountered some unexpected obstacles.

Despite what some might call ‘misappropriated ideas’ during their journey, they made a conscious decision to avoid an expensive and time-consuming legal battle. Instead, they’ve chosen to let the power of their story and product speak for itself. While others may have attempted to capitalize on their innovation, PIE-POD is the original—developed with passion, dedication, and a vision to revolutionize pizza storage and reheating.

Their journey started with humble beginnings: a father-son duo, Seth Marquit, and his son Caleb, applied and were accepted to compete on Season 4 of Make48, a reality show designed to take new inventions from concept to store shelves within 48 hours. Though they didn’t win the $10,000 grand prize, they used the experience as a springboard to further develop the product, eventually selling out of their first 500 Pie-Pod units at the 2021 International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas. The demand for Pie-Pod was clear, but the COVID pandemic disrupted their supply chain, delaying their efforts to bring their innovative product to the masses.

To showcase their success, Seth and Caleb auditioned for Shark Tank. They made it to the final round and even purchased airline tickets to fly out to California for the show. However, in an unexpected turn of events, they were informed that Pie-Pod would not be moving forward with filming. Shortly afterward, a product with striking similarities appeared airing live on Shark Tank Season 14, pitching a solution to pizza storage and reheating—but without the ability to crisp pizza in the microwave like Pie-Pod can.

Pie-Pod has doubled down on efforts to reclaim its rightful market share. This weekend, in a Hail Mary attempt to capture the attention of pizza aficionados, they’re taking their mission to new heights—literally. Pie-Pod recently launched two slices of pizza into the stratosphere. Now they’re challenging Dave Portnoy, the pizza legend behind Barstool Sports, to taste test these slices after reheating them in a microwave oven on a Pie-Pod crisper pan. The challenge, if accepted, will take place at Dave Portnoy’s One Bite Pizza Festival this weekend on Randall’s Island in New York City.

The David vs. Goliath nature of Pie-Pod’s journey, along with their bold challenge to Portnoy, serves as a testament to their commitment to pizza lovers everywhere. It’s time to let the world know the true story behind Pie-Pod and why it remains the only storage and microwave crisper device capable of delivering that brick-oven taste for leftover pizza that’s out of this world.

They invite the media and pizza enthusiasts everywhere to join them at the One Bite Pizza Festival and witness what could be the ultimate pizza review of the century! Their goal is simple: to reclaim their rightful place as the top choice for pizza storage and reheating while showing the world just how far their passion for leftover pizza can go.

Secret Service to heighten security measures on Jan. 6 to prevent another riot

The U.S. Secret Service (USSS) will ramp up security on Jan. 6, 2025, in an effort to “ensure the safety and security” of the upcoming Electoral College vote count at the Capitol.

The USSS confirmed the security measures in an email to Fox News Digital. The agency released a statement on Wednesday noting that Jan. 6, 2025, has been “designated a National Special Security Event by the Secretary of Homeland Security.”

“This designation allows for significant resources from the federal government, as well as from state and local partners, to be utilized in a comprehensive security plan,” officials said in a statement. “When an event is designated a National Special Security Event, the U.S. Secret Service assumes its mandated role as the lead agency for the design and implementation of the operational security plan.”

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser had requested the heightened security, the agency said. The 2025 presidential inauguration, which will take place on Jan. 20, had previously been designated a National Special Security Event.

“This marks the first time a National Special Security Event designation has been granted for a Certification of Electoral Votes and follows a request made by the DC Mayor to designate this event a National Special Security Event,” the USSS’s statement read. “Various reports including from the House Select January 6 Committee and the Government Accountability Office also called for the DHS Secretary to consider a National Special Security Event designation for future Certification of Electoral Votes.”

In a statement, Special Agent Eric Ranaghan, who is in charge of USSS’s Dignitary Protective Division, said that the electoral voting session has been designated an event “of the highest national significance.”

“The U.S. Secret Service, in collaboration with our federal, state, and local partners are committed to developing and implementing a comprehensive and integrated security plan to ensure the safety and security of this event and its participants,” he said.

An Executive Steering Committee, which will consist of “senior representatives from federal, state and local law enforcement and public safety partners,” will convene to start the formal planning process.

The request was made in direct response to the 2021 Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, in which thousands of supporters of former President Trump stormed the Capitol to against the Electoral College vote count.

On Tuesday night, Trump was asked by ABC host David Muir if he had any regrets about Jan. 6 during a presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I had nothing to do with that, other than they asked me to make a speech,” the Republican nominee replied.

The Department of Homeland Security’s designation puts the Secret Service in charge of security instead of U.S. Capitol Police, first reported by the Washington Post.
