35 days: VP Harris refuses to reveal policy positions, give news conferences or interviews

0

Vice President Kamala Harris has gone five weeks refusing to give specifics to voters about her policy positions, holding no news conferences and sitting for zero major interviews since becoming the Democrats’ presidential nominee.

Harris spoke on Thursday at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), officially accepting the nomination, and has been busy on the campaign trail, but she has failed to face substantive questions since replacing President Biden on the ticket last month.

Now that the party’s national convention has wrapped up, speculation about when Harris will end her media blackout is likely to pick up steam as Americans want to know where she stands on a variety of hot-button issues. Policy shifts on fracking, border security and private health insurance are among issues that she has been urged to explain in recent weeks.

During one of her rare and brief press gaggles, Harris insisted on Aug. 9 that she wanted “to get an interview scheduled before the end of the month.” But now, there’s just over a week until the calendar flips to September and Harris has not announced any sort of interview.

Harris laughed and said, “I’m working towards it,” on Thursday night when Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked if she was ready for a Fox News interview following her scripted DNC speech.

Among other questions she got Thursday night was “how do you feel tonight?” after her convention acceptance speech. “I feel good, now onto tomorrow, “Harris said, laughing.

Another NBC reporter asked how it felt for her to be on the stage.

“It felt good,” Harris said. “You know, we’ve got 75 days to go … That was good, now we’ve got to move on.”

“You will not see one press conference from her in the next 75 days until Election Day,” Fox News contributor Joe Concha predicted Friday.

Meanwhile, her opponent, former President Trump, called into Fox News moments after Harris’ DNC speech for an interview; recently sat down with podcaster Theo Von; conducted a two-hour chat on X with supporter Elon Musk; and held a pair of press conferences where he answered questions about a wide variety of topics.

Harris has famously struggled when faced with tough questions in the past, often appearing to laugh uncomfortably or offering jumbled and confusing answers.

In 2021, Harris struggled to explain a strategy for securing the border and infamously joked she hadn’t been to Europe, either, when NBC News anchor Lester Holt asked why she hadn’t visited the southern border.

HOW LONG WILL THE KAMALA HARRIS HONEYMOON IN THE POLLS AGAINST DONALD TRUMP LAST?

In 2023, The New York Times reported that she “all but went into a bunker for about a year, avoiding many interviews out of what aides said was a fear of making mistakes and disappointing Mr. Biden” after the “disastrous” sit-down with Holt.

The Wall Street Journal editorial board on Friday wrote that her DNC speech lacked substance.

“Harris introduced herself to the American public on Thursday, and her presentation was much like this week’s Democratic convention: well delivered, confident and optimistic, and mostly devoid of policy substance. Whether she can keep this up, unexplained and unexposed, for the next 12 weeks will determine whether she becomes America’s 47th President,” the WSJ editorial board wrote

The WSJ noted a variety of “falsehoods,” peppered throughout her scripted speech, including misleading attacks on Trump regarding abortion rights, Medicare and Social Security.

Vice President Kamala Harris

“Harris attempted to lay out a vision for her Presidency, but it was mostly empty platitudes. She will provide ‘opportunity,’ though she didn’t say how. She will solve the housing crisis, without saying how or explaining why there is a crisis on her watch. And she will reduce prices, without a repeat of her recent proposal to impose price controls,” the WSJ editorial board wrote.

Harris would likely be asked how much she wants to be linked to the Biden record in a serious interview.

Other topics she would likely have to discuss include several key foreign policy issues, such as Israel and Ukraine.

CNN HOST PRESSES HARRIS CAMPAIGN SPOX ON VP’S SCHEDULE AS SHE AVOIDS PRESS: ‘SHE HAS TIME’ FOR AN INTERVIEW

GOP vice-presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, who has urged reporters to “show a little bit of self-awareness” and pushed Harris to “do the job of a presidential candidate” by speaking to them, has spoken with CNN twice, Fox News, CBS, ABC and other outlets in recent weeks.

“They won’t let Kamala do a five-minute interview with Elmo,” pundit David Marcus recently snarked on X.

But some media members seem to wonder if she’s just employing good strategy.

CNN’s Erin Burnett pointed out during DNC coverage that Harris hadn’t done an interview, pondering aloud if she should “just ignore all those calls to talk and just keep doing what she’s doing.”

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond when asked if she still planned to sit down with a reporter in August.

The campaign told Fox News Digital earlier this month that it was conducting a strategy to best reach voters.

“With under 90 days to go, the Vice President’s top priority is earning the support of the voters who will decide this election,” a spokesperson said. “In a limited time period and a fragmented media environment, that requires us being strategic, creative, and expeditious in getting our message to those voters in the ways that are most impactful — through paid media, on the ground organizing, an aggressive campaign schedule, and of course interviews that reach our target voters. It’s a far cry from Trump’s losing, ineffective strategy of rage-posting, accosting reporters, and insulting the voters he’ll need to win.

“If Donald Trump is so concerned about the success of VP Harris’ campaign blitz, he could, you know, get out there on the campaign trail. We are more than happy for him to shed a spotlight on his election-losing agenda: terminating the ACA, killing a bipartisan border bill, and supporting a national abortion ban.”

The Israeli Defense Forces said Sunday morning it launched heavy airstrikes on Hezbollah positions across Lebanon after detecting the terror group was preparing for an “imminent” attack on Israel.

“The IDF identified the Hezbollah terrorist organization preparing to fire missiles and rockets toward Israeli territory. In response to these threats, the IDF is striking terror targets in Lebanon,” IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said in a statement. “Israeli Air Force fighter jets are currently striking targets belonging to the Hezbollah terrorist organization that posed an imminent threat to the citizens of the State of Israel.”

Civilians in southern Lebanon were urged to evacuate their homes and out of dangerous areas.

“From right next to the homes of Lebanese civilians in the South of Lebanon, we can see that Hezbollah is preparing to launch an extensive attack on Israel, while endangering the Lebanese civilians,” the IDF said. ‌‏”We warn the civilians located in the areas where Hezbollah is operating, to move out of harm’s way immediately for their own safety.”

Public shelters were opened across Israel as new restrictions were placed in northern areas of the country.

Nearly 80,000 Israelis were forced to evacuate their homes near the Lebanon border when Hezbollah began launching rockets and drones in October.

Anthony Fauci’s West Nile virus diagnosis: What to know about the mosquito-borne disease

0

Dr. Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and former chief medical advisor to the president, was diagnosed with West Nile virus earlier this month, according to a spokesperson for Fauci.

Fauci, 83 — who was the face of the U.S. response to the COVID pandemic in 2020 — is now recovering at home after being hospitalized for six days.

He is expected to make a full recovery, the spokesperson told Fox News.

WEST NILE DEATH REPORTED IN TEXAS AS HEALTH OFFICIALS WARN RESIDENTS TO SAFEGUARD AGAINST MOSQUITOES

What to know about West Nile virus

As of Aug. 20, there were 216 West Nile virus cases in the U.S. across 33 states, per the CDC.

Among those, 142 cases were neuroinvasive (severe).

Since the West Nile virus first entered the U.S. in 1999, it has become the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Anthony Fauci, formerly the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical advisor to the president, was diagnosed with West Nile virus earlier this month, according to a spokesperson for Fauci. (Getty Images)

In most cases, the West Nile virus — a flavivirus in the same family as yellow fever, dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis and the Zika virus — is spread when Culex mosquitoes bite infected birds and then bite people and other animals, per the CDC’s website.

The virus is not transmitted through eating or handling infected animals or birds — nor is it spread through physical contact, coughing or sneezing.

IN A POTENTIAL OUTBREAK, IS BIRD FLU TESTING AVAILABLE FOR HUMANS? WHAT TO KNOW

A vast majority — around 80% — of the people who contract the virus will not experience any symptoms, the CDC states on its website.

“It causes a rash and other symptoms, including swollen lymph nodes, which other viruses in its class do not exhibit,” Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News and clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, previously told Fox News Digital.

“It only affects the nervous system 1% of the time and is rarely fatal.”

IN COLORADO, PLAGUE CASE CONFIRMED IN HUMAN, HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY: ‘MUST BE TREATED PROMPTLY’

Around one in five people will develop febrile illness, which is marked by a fever along with body aches, headache, joint pain, diarrhea, rash and/or vomiting.

These symptoms usually go away on their own, but some people may have lingering weakness and fatigue months after infection.

West Nile affects the nervous system 1% of the time and is rarely fatal.

In rare cases — about one in every 150 infected people — the virus can lead to serious conditions affecting the nervous system, such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord), the CDC states on its website.

Those who develop serious illness may experience headache, stiff neck, high fever, disorientation, vision loss, muscle weakness, convulsions, tremors, coma or paralysis, which occur when there is viral infection of the central nervous system.

Among people who have this invasive form of the illness, around 10% will die.

It affects the nervous system 1% of the time and is rarely fatal, statistics show.

While anyone can potentially develop severe illness, the highest-risk groups include those over 60 years of age, people who have had organ transplants and those with diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, kidney disease, immune disorders and other certain medical conditions.

“The virus’ effects can be quite serious in the elderly,” Siegel noted.

Diagnosis and treatment

Those who think they might have been infected with WNV should be assessed by a health care provider, the CDC states.

Diagnosis of the infection can be made based on evaluation of symptoms, recent exposure to mosquitoes and testing of blood or spinal fluid.

OUTBREAK OF KLEBSIELLA PNEUMONIAE BACTERIA INFECTS 31 PATIENTS AT SEATTLE HOSPITAL

Health care providers will typically recommend treating symptoms with over-the-counter pain medications and getting plenty of rest and fluids.

Those who experience severe illness may need to be hospitalized for supportive care.

Preventing the virus

There is currently no vaccine for West Nile virus.

“The virus can be contained through public health measures including more insect repellent with DEET, longer sleeves and less stagnant water in our backyards,” Siegel said.

Trying to kill adult mosquitoes by spreading too much insecticide can be problematic, the doctor warned.

“Animals, people with asthma and insects that would otherwise kill the mosquitoes are affected.”

When spending time outdoors, it is recommended that people apply insect repellent containing DEET or other EPA-approved ingredients. (iStock)

The most effective means of prevention is to protect against mosquito bites, the CDC confirmed.

The agency’s recommendations include using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, and taking steps to control exposure to mosquitoes — particularly at dawn and dusk.

Musk’s SpaceX to attempt first-ever private spacewalk with new suits, vehicle

0

  • SpaceX’s astronauts will be the first non-government astronauts to attempt a spacewalk as part of the Polaris Dawn mission.
  •  The mission will also test SpaceX’s new, slimmer spacesuit, and a Crew Dragon vehicle that was modified so it can open its hatch door in the vacuum of space, meaning it does not require an airlock.
  • SpaceX officials and the Polaris crew said during a news conference on Monday they have planned for an array of contingency scenarios if something during the mission goes wrong, such as an oxygen leak or failure to reseal the hatch door, but they did not detail what those were.

SpaceX’s attempt at the first ever private spacewalk next week will be a test of trailblazing equipment, including slim spacesuits and a cabin with no airlock, in one of the riskiest missions yet for Elon Musk’s space company.

A billionaire entrepreneur, a retired military fighter pilot and two SpaceX employees are poised to launch on Tuesday aboard a modified Crew Dragon craft, before embarking on a 20-minute spacewalk 434 miles into space two days later.

Until now, walking into the empty expanse of space has only been attempted by government astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS), 250 miles above Earth.

MUSK’S SPACEX TAKES BOLD STEP BEYOND SPACE STATION ON THE WAY TO MAKING HUMANITY AN ‘INTERPLANETARY SPECIES’

SpaceX’s five-day mission – dubbed Polaris Dawn – will swing in an oval-shaped orbit, passing as close to Earth as 118 miles and as far as 870 miles, the farthest any humans will have ventured since the end of the United States’ Apollo moon program in 1972.

Crew members, including billionaire Jared Isaacman, will don SpaceX’s new, slimline spacesuits in a Crew Dragon vehicle that was modified so it can open its hatch door in the vacuum of space – an unusual process that removes the need for an airlock.

“They’re pushing the envelope in multiple ways,” retired NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman said in an interview. “They’re also going to a much higher altitude, with a more severe radiation environment than we’ve been to since Apollo.”

The crew members of SpaceX's Polaris Dawn

Anna Menon, Scott Poteet, commander Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis, crew members of Polaris Dawn, a private human spaceflight mission, attend a press conference at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on August 19, 2024. (Reuters/Joe Skipper)

The mission has been bankrolled by Isaacman, the founder of electronic payment company Shift4. He has declined to say how much he has spent, but it is estimated to be over $100 million.

Joining him will be mission pilot Scott Poteet, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, and SpaceX employees Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, both senior engineers at the company.

For SpaceX, which has pioneered cheap, reusable rockets and expensive private spaceflight, the mission is an opportunity to advance technologies that could be used on the moon and Mars.

Far outside the protective bubble of Earth’s atmosphere, the electronics and shielding on Crew Dragon and spacesuits will be tested as they pass through parts of the Van Allen belt, an area where charged particles streaming mainly from the sun can disrupt satellites’ electronics and affect human health.

“That’s an additional risk that you don’t face when you just stay in low-Earth orbit and go up to the ISS,” Reisman said.

SpaceX’s new kind of spacewalk

The Polaris spacewalk will take place on the mission’s third day, but preparation will begin about 45 hours in advance.

The gumdrop-shaped Crew Dragon’s entire cabin will be depressurized and exposed to the vacuum of space. While only two of the astronauts will float outside, tethered by an oxygen line, the whole crew will depend on their spacesuits for life support.

Days before the spacewalk, the crew will begin a “pre-breathe” process to fill the cabin with pure oxygen and remove any nitrogen from the air.

Nitrogen, if present in astronauts’ bloodstreams in space, could form bubbles, block blood flow and lead to decompression sickness, known as “the bends,” as with scuba divers who return too quickly to the water’s surface.

The crew will use an ultrasound device to monitor any bubble formation, one of many tools to be used in the mission to inform dozens of scientific experiments, providing researchers a rare peek into how astronauts might fare on the moon’s surface or elsewhere in deep space.

“It gives us a very unique opportunity to test these vehicles in such a very unique environment,” said Emmanuel Urquieta, vice chair for aerospace medicine at the University of Central Florida’s internal medicine department.

While astronaut safety on NASA missions is rigorously overseen by the agency, there are no such U.S. standards or laws for spaceflight safety in private missions like Polaris.

SpaceX officials and the Polaris crew said during a Monday news conference they have planned for an array of contingency scenarios if something during the mission goes wrong, such as an oxygen leak or failure to reseal the hatch door, but they did not detail what those were.

Reisman said he knows the Polaris crew and believes they are prepared to handle any unexpected mishaps.

“But there’s not a lot of room for error,” he said.

‘Top Thrill 2’ roller coaster at Cedar Point will not reopen this season

0

Top Thrill 2, the long-awaited re-imagining of Cedar Point’s Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster, will not reopen this operating season, the Sandusky, Ohio-based park announced on August 23.

In the statement, Cedar Point said that work was ongoing to modify the ride’s vehicles, and laid most of the blame on the ride’s manufacturer, Zamperla.

Zamperla, an Italian-based manufacturer, was announced as the manufacturer of Top Thrill 2 in 2023. Top Thrill Dragster, the original coaster, was manufactured by Intamin.

“We sincerely appreciate your patience while Top Thrill 2’s manufacturer, Zamperla, has been working diligently to complete a mechanical modification to the coaster vehicles,” Cedar Point said in a statement posted to its social media platforms and website.

“Unfortunately, the manufacturer will not be able to complete the modifications needed in time to reopen the coaster in 2024,” they said.

Top Thrill 2 will not reopen during the 2024 season, Cedar Point announced on August 23. The ride was open for just days before it was closed for an “extended closure.”  (Artist concept rendering. Courtesy of Cedar Point.)

“We are extremely disappointed that we cannot open the ride this season, but remain committed to delivering a reliable, consistent and unparalleled coaster experience for our guests in 2025,” said Cedar Point, adding a “sincere apology.”

Cedar Point is open daily until Labor Day, and then operates during select weekends until November 2.

Top Thrill 2 opened on May 4, 2024, following several days of previews prior to its official opening. Just over a week later, the park announced that the ride would have an “extended closure” due to an issue with the ride’s vehicles.

Since its closure, the X account @TopThrillStatus has been documenting the work that has been done on the coaster, including the testing of the modified trains.

Microsoft apps on macOS could be your biggest privacy threat

0

Microsoft apps like Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams are so popular (and useful) that they’re nearly unavoidable, whether you’re on a Windows computer or a Mac. However, these apps can become a hacker’s paradise on Apple Macs due to an unpatched vulnerability.

A cybersecurity research group has revealed that Microsoft apps on Macs have a security flaw that could allow hackers to access your photos, videos, contacts and almost all of your private data.

The worst part? Microsoft doesn’t consider it a big enough threat to fix.

Vulnerabilities in Microsoft apps expose users to unauthorized data access

The cybersecurity research group Cisco Talos has discovered security vulnerabilities in Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams and Word. These vulnerabilities allow attackers to inject malicious libraries into these apps, giving them access to the apps’ permissions and user-granted entitlements.

To understand why that’s dangerous, let’s first look at macOS’s framework. Mac devices operate on a permission-based system and rely on the Transparency, Consent and Control (TCC) framework. You’ve probably noticed that every time you download a new app, you’re asked to grant permission for it to run. Similarly, when an app wants to access sensitive information like contacts, photos or webcams, you’re prompted to allow or block access.

This system ensures that you know and trust the apps that have access to your private information. However, Apple doesn’t allow just any app to request access to sensitive data — only those with the proper entitlements, meaning apps that Apple has authorized to make such requests. Apps without these entitlements won’t prompt you for permission to access sensitive data.

The Microsoft apps mentioned above have these entitlements, and the security flaw within them allows hackers to bypass permission requests and access your sensitive information.

“We identified eight vulnerabilities in various Microsoft applications for macOS, through which an attacker could bypass the operating system’s permission model by using existing app permissions without prompting the user for any additional verification,” the researchers explain.

For example, a hacker could design malicious software to read your emails or view your browsing history without you even knowing. “All apps, except for Excel, can access sensitive data like your emails and web activity,” the group adds.

4.3 MILLION AMERICANS EXPOSED IN MASSIVE HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT DATA BREACH

Is Microsoft working on a fix?

Microsoft considers the security flaws “low risk” and has declined to fix them in some apps. “Microsoft considers these issues low risk, and some of their applications, they claim, need to allow loading of unsigned libraries to support plugins and have declined to fix the issues,” the Cisco Talos research group said.

Microsoft updated the Teams and OneNote apps on macOS to change how they handle the library validation entitlement. However, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook remain vulnerable to the exploit.

Cisco Talos hasn’t provided a working example of how this vulnerability could be exploited in real-world attacks. They also haven’t confirmed whether hackers have used the flaw to access users’ sensitive information yet.

A NEW RUSSIAN THREAT TARGETS OVER 100 APPLE MACOS BROWSER EXTENSIONS

Microsoft and Apple’s response

We reached out to Microsoft, and a company spokesperson offered this statement:

“The disclosed cases do not pose a significant security risk as the technique described requires the attacker to already have a certain level of access to the system. However, we have implemented several updates for added protection, as detailed in the report. As a best practice, customers should keep their software updated and regularly review application permissions.”

We also contacted Apple but did not hear back by our deadline.

What can you do to protect your data?

There’s not much you can do to protect yourself in this situation unless Microsoft patches the vulnerability. Still, below are some steps you can take to minimize the risk.

1. Keep your apps updated: Regularly check for updates to your Microsoft apps through the Mac App Store or the Microsoft AutoUpdate tool. Even though not all vulnerabilities may be addressed, updates often include important security patches that reduce your risk of exploitation.

2. Limit permissions: Go to your macOS settings and review the permissions granted to Microsoft apps. Disable access to sensitive data like your camera, microphone, contacts, and calendar unless absolutely necessary. For example, if you rarely use the camera in Teams, you can revoke its access. Here’s how to do it:

  • Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select “System Settings.”
  • In the System Settings window, scroll down and select “Privacy & Security” from the sidebar.
  • Within the Privacy & Security section, you’ll find various categories such as Camera, Microphone, Contacts and Calendars. Click on each category to see which apps have access.
  • For each category, find Microsoft apps (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Outlook) and uncheck them to revoke access if unnecessary. For example, if you rarely use the camera in Teams, you can uncheck it in the Camera section.
  • Close the System Settings window to save your changes. The apps will no longer have access to the specified data unless you grant it again in the future.

For earlier macOS versions, the steps to limit permissions for Microsoft apps are slightly different. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select “System Preferences.”
  • In the System Preferences window, click on “Security & Privacy.”
  • In the Security & Privacy window, go to the “Privacy” tab.
  • On the left sidebar, you’ll see various categories such as Camera, Microphone, Contacts and Calendars.
  • Click on each category to see which apps have access.
  • To make changes, you may need to click the lock icon in the bottom-left corner and enter your administrator password.
  • Find the Microsoft apps (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Outlook) and uncheck them to revoke access if unnecessary.
  • Close the Security & Privacy window to save your changes. The apps will no longer have access to the specified data unless you grant it again in the future.

These steps help ensure that Microsoft apps on your macOS have limited access to sensitive data, enhancing your privacy and security.

3. Consider alternatives: If you’re concerned about security, consider using alternative office software that is less susceptible to these vulnerabilities. Apple’s suite of productivity apps, including Pages, Numbers and Keynote, are designed specifically for macOS and offer robust security features. These apps can serve as viable replacements for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, respectively.

Additionally, Google Workspace offers cloud-based tools like Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, which are accessible from any device and provide strong security measures. By switching to these alternatives, you can reduce the risk of unauthorized data access and maintain better control over your personal information.

4. Use strong antivirus software: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware and potentially access your private information on your Mac is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

MASSIVE SECURITY FLAW PUTS MOST POPULAR BROWSERS AT RISK ON MAC

Kurt’s key takeaway

While Microsoft apps like Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams are indispensable tools for many, their vulnerabilities on macOS pose significant security risks. The discovery highlights how these apps can be exploited to access sensitive data without your consent. Despite the seriousness of these findings, Microsoft’s decision not to address all vulnerabilities leaves you in a precarious position. It’s crucial for you to stay vigilant by keeping your apps updated, limiting permissions and considering alternative software solutions to safeguard your data. As technology evolves, so do the threats, making it essential for you to prioritize security.

Creator Charlie Brooker doesn’t think AI-generated creativity is the way forward for Hollywood, saying, “If you were using it to generate a pitch and then try to turn it into a show, I think that’s not good. And you’ll end up with dog s–t, and you’ll be putting people out of work. So, with any of these things, it’s how you use it.

DeepMind’s table tennis robot

Google’s DeepMind Robotics team recently made headlines with their development of a table tennis robot capable of playing at a “solidly amateur human level.” In their paper titled “Achieving Human Level Competitive Robot Table Tennis,” the researchers describe their robot’s performance against human opponents.

The robot managed to win all matches against beginner players and secured victory in 55% of games against intermediate players. However, it struggled against advanced players, losing every match. Overall, the robot won 45% of the 29 games it played.

How the table tennis robot works

The table tennis robot is built with a clever system that helps it decide which moves to make during a game. Think of it as having two levels of decision-making: the low-level controllers and the high-level controllers. The low-level controllers handle specific skills like forehand topspin or backhand targeting, similar to how a player might practice different shots. Meanwhile, the high-level controller acts like a coach, choosing which skill to use based on the situation in the game and what it knows about its opponent.

One of the coolest things about this robot is its ability to adapt in real time. It keeps track of how well each skill works and adjusts its strategy on the fly. As it plays, it learns more about its opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, allowing it to refine its approach and become a better competitor.

Before hitting the real table, the robot trains in a virtual world. This is where it practices and learns without any risk. Once it’s ready, it transitions smoothly to playing real matches. This process of moving from simulation to reality helps it improve its skills over time, making it more effective with each game.

The robot’s performance is constantly evaluated through matches against human players. Feedback from these games helps it get even better. This advanced system not only makes the robot a tough opponent but also a fun and engaging practice partner for players of all levels.

Challenges for the table tennis robot

Despite its successes, the robot faces significant challenges, particularly in reacting to fastballs. DeepMind attributes these difficulties to system latency, mandatory resets between shots and insufficient data.

To overcome these hurdles, the researchers are exploring advanced control algorithms and hardware optimizations, such as predictive models for ball trajectories and faster communication protocols between sensors and actuators.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

Beyond table tennis

The implications of this research extend beyond the confines of table tennis. DeepMind highlights the potential of their robot’s policy architecture, simulation use, and real-time strategy adaptation to influence robotics in broader contexts. The ultimate goal is to achieve human-level performance in various real-world tasks, paving the way for robots capable of interacting safely and skillfully with humans.

Kurt’s key takeaways

DeepMind’s table tennis robot demonstrates the potential for machines to engage in complex human activities. While there are still challenges to address, such as improving reaction times and handling diverse ball spins, the progress made so far is promising. As technology advances, we can expect robots to become even more adept at performing a wide range of tasks, making them valuable companions in both recreational and practical settings in our lives.

What happens next in the Kamala Harris-Donald Trump face-off

0

Vice President Kamala Harris, urged her supporters to “get out there, let’s fight for it,” as she concluded her presidential nomination acceptance speech at this week’s Democratic National Convention.

With both major party national nominating conventions now in the books, the 2024 edition of the race for the White House enters the final sprint.

Both Harris and former President Trump, the Republican Party’s nominee, will be back on the campaign trail in the upcoming week, along with their running mates, making stops across some of the seven crucial battleground states that will likely determine the outcome of the November election.

It’s a process that will be repeated each and every week until Election Day.

Harris interview?

The former president, his running mate Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, and their campaign and allied Republicans have repeatedly criticized Harris for not holding a major news conference or sitting for an interview since replacing Biden atop their party’s 2024 ticket over a month ago.

HEAD HERE FOR THE LATEST FOX NEWS POLLING IN THE 2024 ELECTION

So all eyes will be on Harris to see if she lives up to her promise to do a national news media interview in the week left in the month of August.

Fundraising fight

There’s just one week left in August, and the end of the month will bring anticipation of the latest fundraising figures from both the Trump and Harris campaigns.

President Biden enjoyed the fundraising lead over Trump earlier this year, but the former president saw his fundraising soar in the late spring and early summer.

But after Biden’s blockbuster move to end his re-election bid and Harris replacing him as the Democrats’ standard-bearer, the campaign and the party’s fundraising surged and Harris walloped Trump in fundraising during July.

The August numbers, which the campaigns could release as early as September 1, will be closely watched and scrutinized, as fundraising along with polling is a crucial metric.

Debate clash

The first and possibly the only presidential debate between Harris and Trump is scheduled for Sept. 10 in Philadelphia.

The face-off could be the most important evening in the 2024 presidential election, with the power to potentially shift or transform the current margin-of-error race between the vice president and the former president.

Need proof – just look back to the late June debate between Biden and Trump. The president’s disastrous performance fueled questions about whether the 81-year-old president had the mental and physical stamina to handle another four years in the White House. And it sparked calls from within his own party for Biden to drop out of the race.

Less than a month after the clash in Atlanta, the president was out of the race.

Early voting

There are 73 days to go until Election Day, but some voters will start casting ballots next month.

In swing state North Carolina, mail-in voting begins on Sept. 6. And early voting begins on Sept. 16 in Pennsylvania and Sept. 26 in Michigan, two other crucial electoral battlegrounds.

Northeastern towns issue voluntary lockdown to prevent spread of mosquito-borne disease

0

Four Massachusetts towns — Douglas, Oxford, Sutton and Webster — have enacted a voluntary evening lockdown in an attempt to curb the spread of a potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease.

The decision comes after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed the first human case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) since 2020 in Worcester County.

On Wednesday, the Oxford Board of Health voted to support the recommendation for people to remain indoors after 6:00 p.m., effective immediately, through Sept. 30, according to a public health advisory shared with Fox News Digital.

Starting on Oct. 1, the recommendation is to remain indoors after 5:00 p.m. until the first hard frost.

The period from dusk through dawn is considered “peak mosquito hours,” the notice stated.

The advisory designates the four communities as “critical-risk.”

“It is the Board of Health’s responsibility to protect the public health, and we take EEE very seriously, and we are strongly encouraging residents to follow these recommendations due to the severity of EEE and the fact that it is in our community,” a spokesperson for the town of Oxford said in an email to Fox News Digital.

PARVOVIRUS OR ‘SLAPPED CHEEK DISEASE’ IS ON THE RISE, CDC WARNS: HERE’S WHAT TO KNOW

“So far this year in Massachusetts, there has only been one human case of EEE, but throughout the state, mosquitoes have tested positive for EEE.”

The infected person, who lives in Oxford, remains “hospitalized and courageously battling this virus,” according to a Wednesday memo from the Oxford town manager that was provided to Fox News Digital.

The lockdowns are considered recommendations, and there will be no enforcement if residents do not comply, the town spokesperson said.

“We want to educate our residents about EEE and the seriousness of the illness and make them aware of the risk,” the statement continued.

“However, if they want to use town fields outside these recommendations, they will have to show proof of insurance and sign an indemnification form.”

Oxford is working with the other three critical-risk communities, with all four issuing these same recommendations, the spokesperson confirmed.

Schools are working to reschedule and adjust their sports schedules so practices and games occur before these evening times and on weekends,” the email noted.

Fox News Digital reached out to Oxford Public Schools for comment.

What is Eastern equine encephalitis?

Eastern equine encephalitis is caused by a virus that is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which describes EEE as a “rare but serious disease.”

“Eastern equine encephalitis can cause brain infection (encephalitis), which can be fatal.”

Only a few cases are reported in the U.S. each year, most in the Eastern or Gulf Coast states, the agency states on its website.

Humans and other animals that contract the virus are considered “dead-end hosts,” the CDC states, which means they can’t spread it to mosquitoes that bite them.

Common symptoms of EEE include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, seizures, behavioral changes and drowsiness.

These usually appear five to 10 days after being bitten.

The disease can be deadly, resulting in fatalities for 30% of infected people. It can also lead to chronic neurological deficiencies, per the CDC.

‘ZIKA-LIKE’ MOSQUITO-BORNE VIRUS HAS SPREAD INTO EUROPE, HEALTH OFFICIALS WARN

“Eastern equine encephalitis can cause brain infection (encephalitis), which can be fatal,” Edward Liu, MD, chief of infectious diseases at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, told Fox News Digital.

Older people and those who are immunocompromised are at the highest risk for mosquito-borne encephalitis, according to Liu.

Prevention of mosquito bites is the most effective means of protecting against the disease, experts say. (iStock)

Dr. John Ayers, vice chief of innovation in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at the University of California, San Diego, confirmed to Fox News Digital that EEE is “serious but extraordinarily rare.”

“Without any overt prevention measures, cases remain substantially rarer than being struck by lightning,” he said.

Prevention and treatment

The fact that local mosquitoes have the virus and one Massachusetts patient has become infected is “concerning,” Liu said.

“While evening lockdowns could be protective, other options would be educating the public of the risk, encouraging mosquito repellent usage, and spraying to prevent the prevalence of mosquitoes,” he advised.

Ayers added, “I don’t think there is anything you can do to meaningfully lower your individual chances of illness, because they’re already so low.”

“These viral encephalitides have no treatment, so prevention and supportive care is the only course of action.”

He agrees that typical strategies to deal with mosquito vector diseases are to kill the mosquitoes, reduce areas with standing water where they can nest and spray to kill their larvae.
