Rich Titanic passenger’s gold pocket watch may be most expensive artifact ever sold

A gold pocket watch recovered from one of the richest passengers aboard the Titanic may become the most expensive artifact from the tragedy ever sold, according to experts.

The watch belonged to Isidor Straus, co-owner of Macy’s department store, who was aboard the ill-fated ship in April 1912, along with his wife, Ida Straus. The couple were returning to New York from a trip to Europe.

“One account stated they were last seen sitting on the deck arm in arm, although in [the film] ‘Titanic’ they were depicted lying side by side on the bed in their stateroom,” according to auctioneer Andrew Aldridge.

MYSTERY SOLVED? RESEARCHER CHALLENGES LONG-HELD THEORY OF WHAT SANK SHACKLETON’S ENDURANCE IN ANTARCTIC ICE

Ida Straus did not want to abandon her husband — and famously refused a spot in a lifeboat, preferring instead to remain by his side. “My place is with you,” she reportedly told him. “I have lived with you. I love you, and, if necessary, I shall die with you.”

Instead, her maid was shuffled into a lifeboat and given her fur coat to keep warm.

“Isidor and Ida Straus were among the higher echelons of society,” Aldridge said.

Days after the doomed vessel sank in April 1912, the Straus items were recovered in the Atlantic and returned to their son, Jesse.

NEW JERSEY MAN’S TITANIC BELONGINGS RECOVERED EXPECTED TO AUCTION FOR MORE THAN $100K

Among the items recovered was an 18-carat gold Jules Jurgensen pocket watch engraved with the initials “IS.”

The watch allegedly stopped at 2:20 a.m. — the moment the Titanic became submerged.

It is believed that Ida Straus gifted the watch to her husband in 1888 for his 43rd birthday, with the date Feb. 6, 1888, inscribed on it.

That was the same year he and his brother Nathan Straus became full partners of Macy’s.

“At the turn of the 20th century, a pocket watch was one of the closest things to the heart of a gentleman of the era,” said Aldridge. “This watch embodies this as a gift from one half of the most famous couple on the Titanic to the other.”

“It was a treasured personal possession of one of the most important men on Titanic,” Aldridge added. “The watch quite simply represents one of the finest and rarest objects from the Titanic story.”

Accompanying the sale of the watch is a letter written by Ida Straus to a family friend dated April 10, 1912.

The letter also going up for auction this month has a Titanic header and is postmarked "TransAtlantic 7."

The letter has a Titanic header and is postmarked “TransAtlantic 7” from the ship’s post office before being taken off the ship with other mail at Queenstown, Ireland.

Both the watch and letter have never been seen before — and are being sold by direct descendants of the Straus family at Henry Aldridge & Son Auctioneers of Devizes, Wiltshire.

In her letter, Ida Straus referenced an incident in Southampton, New York, in which the Titanic almost crashed with SS New York.

“Size seems to bring its troubles,” she wrote. “Mr. Straus, who was on deck when the start was made, said at one time it looked painfully near to the repetitions of the Olympic’s experience on her first trip out of harbor.”

She continued, “The danger was soon averted, and we are now well on our course across the channel to Cherbourg.”

Aldridge said the auction house has sold several Titanic letters before, but the condition of Ida Straus’ letter is exceptional and contains colorful and detailed content.

“The fact it was postmarked [at] Titanic’s post office is very rare and unusual, and this will appeal to collectors,” Aldridge added.

“Size seems to bring its troubles.”

More than 20 Kiccdoe gang members accused of violent crimes in Texas were arrested last week, according to Arlington police and the FBI.

Law enforcement executed search warrants in multiple cities, including Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, Mansfield and Forney, FBI Dallas Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jeremy Wright said at a news briefing, according to FOX 4. Police also confiscated weapons, drugs and money.

Officials took 21 known members of the Kiccdoe gang into custody and charged them with RICO, or Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization, conspiracy.

Some suspects also face drug and weapons charges, among other offenses, while others are charged with murder and sexual assault.

“Charges including murder, drug trafficking, assault, burglary, even aggravated sexual assault of a child,” FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X. “This was a multi-agency effort of over 450 local and federal law enforcement personnel to investigate, go in and clean up the violence in Arlington.”

If convicted on the federal charges, many of the suspects face prison sentences of 20 years to life in prison.

The arrested suspects are 22-year-old Blake Scott, 21-year-old Bradly McArthur, 18-year-old Cortez Atkinson, 18-year-old Datraven Warren, 19-year-old DeMarco Westmoreland, 20-year-old Dillen Opare, 19-year-old Raphael Opare, 21-year-old Isaiah Wiley, 19-year-old Jakyla Totten, 20-year-old Jamarion Manogin, 22-year-old Jaylen Franklin, 18-year-old Joseph Hill, 22-year-old Kyron Oates, 18-year-old Michael Mensah, 21-year-old Lamarion Austin, 20-year-old Marcus Shaw, 21-year-old Sadedrick Wilson, 19-year-old Vernell Woods, 21-year-old Sir James Mack Williams, 22-year-old Chauncey Ross and 20-year-old Keyshawn Burton.

“Do not let the ages distract from the havoc that they’ve inflicted upon our community,” Wright said. “These gang members allegedly use violence and intimidation to protect our territory and profits. They instilled fear in their victims and took revenge on their rivals.”

“Kiccdoe members are allegedly responsible for drive-by shootings, numerous attempted murders and even homicides,” he continued. “In addition, they’ve allegedly engaged in organized crime, drug trafficking, weapons possession, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, armed robbery, resisting arrest, assaulting a public servant and aggravated sexual assault of a child.”

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones said the gang is responsible for much of the violent crime in the city and that he asked the local FBI field office for help last year, according to FOX 4.

“Our violent crime unit and our gang specialists have investigated numerous cases involving this group and have been closely monitoring their activity since January of 2022,” he said. “We have documented 180 criminal incidents involving Kiccdoe members. This includes aggravated assaults, robberies, burglaries, shootings, and drug offenses. That’s just within the city of Arlington.”

Jones said he hopes the arrests send a message and will help keep the community safe.

“Our city is safer with these suspects off the street, and I hope our community can rest a little easier tonight knowing that. I also hope that we have proven to them that we will not tolerate violence in our community, and we’re going to do everything in our power to stop it,” he said.

Arlington police and the FBI said their joint operation will continue.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

An Israeli man arriving in Tel Aviv from Thailand was reportedly caught with 186 exotic animals in his suitcase.

The suspect, a man in his 20s from Bnei Brak, was flagged by customs inspectors at Ben Gurion Airport (BGA), according to Israeli authorities and as first reported by Israel’s TPS-IL news agency Thursday. The news appears on the government’s customs and immigration website.

The man was smuggling snakes, turtles, crabs, frogs, lizards and other amphibians.

This type of incident reportedly happens from time to time. In July, a similar incident was reported at the same airport when an individual tried to smuggle nearly 140 exotic reptiles and arthropods into the country.

Customs inspectors found iguanas, pythons, tegus and scorpions. One of the snakes in that incident perished during the trip, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority has previously said that wildlife smuggling and importing protected natural resources into Israel constitute severe violations of multiple laws, according to Israel Hayom.

How to replace passwords with passkeys on your Mac for better security

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Your Mac holds a lot more than just files. It carries your personal information, payment data, messages and every online account you access. Keeping that information safe starts with how you sign in. For years, passwords have been the standard way to protect accounts, but they are also one of the weakest links in digital security. They can be guessed, stolen or reused across multiple sites.

Apple’s introduction of passkeys marks a major step forward. Instead of relying on something you need to remember, passkeys rely on something you have (your trusted Apple device) and something you are, like your fingerprint or face. Together with iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication, passkeys create a seamless and much safer way to secure your Mac and your digital life.

What are passkeys?

Passkeys are a modern alternative to passwords. They use public key cryptography to let you sign in without ever creating or typing a password. When you register for an account using a passkey, your Mac creates two unique keys. One is public and stored by the website or app, and the other is private and stays securely on your device.

The public key is not sensitive information. The private key, on the other hand, never leaves your Mac and is protected behind your device’s security features. When you sign in, Touch ID or Face ID confirms your identity before your Mac uses the private key to authenticate you. This process prevents phishing and password leaks because no shared secret is ever transmitted to the website.

HOW TO USE PASSKEYS TO KEEP YOUR COMPUTER SAFE

How to easily transfer files and photos off of a computer to your hard drive

A passkey on your Mac replaces passwords with a faster, more secure way to sign in. (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

How Apple keeps passkeys secure

Passkeys are stored and synced across your devices through iCloud Keychain, which is protected by end-to-end encryption. This means that not even Apple can access your passkeys or passwords. iCloud Keychain also has built-in protection against brute force attacks, even if someone were to gain unauthorized access to Apple’s servers.

If you lose your devices, you can still recover your passkeys through iCloud Keychain recovery. To do this, you must sign in with your Apple ID and password, verify your identity with a code sent to your trusted number and confirm using your device passcode. The system limits the number of attempts, and if too many failed attempts occur, the recovery record is locked or destroyed to prevent misuse.

You can also set an account recovery contact to make sure you never lose access, even if you forget your Apple ID password or device passcode. This multi-layered design ensures that your data remains secure even in extreme scenarios, such as a compromised Apple account or cloud breach.

How to set up passkeys on your Mac

Setting up passkeys is simple and requires iCloud Keychain to be enabled.

  • Choose the Apple menu, then select System Settings.
  • Click your name, then click iCloud.
  • Click Passwords. In macOS Sonoma or earlier, click Passwords & Keychain.
  • Click Sync this Mac, then click Done.
  • When you sign up for a website or app that supports passkeys, you’ll now see the option to create a passkey.
  • If your Mac has Touch ID, place your finger on the sensor to confirm.
  • If you are using an iPhone or iPad nearby, select Other Options and scan the QR code shown on your Mac to confirm with Face ID.
  • You can also replace an existing password by visiting the account settings of a supported website or app and selecting the option to switch to a passkey.

Once created, your passkeys are automatically stored in iCloud Keychain and available on all devices signed in with the same Apple ID.

Major services that support passkeys

Passkey adoption is growing quickly across major tech platforms. As of now, many of the biggest online services already let you sign in without a password.

Some of the key ones include:

  • Google
  • Microsoft
  • Apple
  • Amazon
  • PayPal
  • GitHub
  • Uber
  • eBay
  • WhatsApp
  • Facebook

Support for passkeys continues to expand every month as more companies integrate the technology into their login systems. On most of these platforms, you can now create new accounts or switch your existing ones to passkeys for faster, more secure sign-ins.

6 additional steps to keep your Mac safe

Passkeys add a strong layer of protection, but good security habits still matter. Here are more steps to strengthen your Mac’s defenses.

1) Enable two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds another layer of protection to your Apple ID. It works by requiring two forms of verification: your password and a one-time code sent to a trusted device or phone number. This means that even if someone somehow gets your password, they still cannot access your account without also having your device.

10 WAYS TO SECURE YOUR OLDER MAC FROM THREATS AND MALWARE

2) Review your trusted devices and numbers

Regularly check which devices and phone numbers are linked to your Apple ID. On your Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper left of the screen. Then go to System Settings → Apple ID → Devices and remove anything you don’t recognize. Make sure your trusted phone number is still current, since it’s critical for account recovery.

3) Use a password manager

Even though passkeys are replacing passwords, many sites still rely on traditional logins. A password manager helps you create, store and fill in unique passwords for every account. iCloud Keychain can do this automatically across all your Apple devices, but if you want more flexibility, you might want to consider a third-party password manager.

Next, see if your email has been exposed in past breaches. Our No. 1 password manager pick includes a built-in breach scanner that checks whether your email address or passwords have appeared in known leaks. If you discover a match, immediately change any reused passwords and secure those accounts with new, unique credentials.

Check out the best expert-reviewed password managers of 2025 at Cyberguy.com.

4) Be wary of phishing attempts and install strong antivirus software

Phishing remains one of the most common ways attackers try to steal personal information. They may send fake emails or messages pretending to be from Apple or other trusted companies, urging you to click links or provide login details. Always double-check the sender’s address and avoid clicking on links that seem suspicious. Instead, visit the website directly by typing the address into your browser.

While macOS has strong built-in defenses such as Gatekeeper and XProtect, installing strong antivirus software adds another layer of protection against malware, adware and potentially unwanted programs. Strong antivirus software continuously monitors your system for suspicious behavior and can alert you to threats before they cause damage. It is especially useful if you download files from outside the App Store or connect external drives frequently.

The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.

Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices at Cyberguy.com.

5) Turn On FileVault disk encryption

FileVault protects everything stored on your Mac by encrypting the entire hard drive. That means if your computer is ever lost or stolen, your data stays locked away from prying eyes. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → FileVault to enable it.

6) Keep macOS updated automatically

Apple regularly releases software updates that include important security patches. Cybercriminals often target outdated systems because they contain known vulnerabilities. By keeping macOS and your apps up to date, you make it harder for attackers to exploit weaknesses. To make this effortless, turn on Automatic Updates under System Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates.

7) Back up with time machine

Backing up your Mac is just as important as protecting it. Time Machine automatically backs up your files to an external drive or network disk, keeping your data safe from ransomware, hardware failure or accidental deletion. Make sure your backup drive is encrypted for extra protection.

HOW A SINGLE MACBOOK COMPROMISE SPREAD ACROSS A USER’S APPLE DEVICES

8) Use a data removal service

Even with passkeys, your personal information can still be exposed through data broker sites that collect and sell your details. Using a data removal service can help remove your private data from hundreds of these sites automatically. It’s an effective way to reduce your online footprint and protect your identity, especially when combined with Apple’s built-in security tools.

While no service can guarantee the complete removal of your data from the internet, a data removal service is really a smart choice. They aren’t cheap, and neither is your privacy. These services do all the work for you by actively monitoring and systematically erasing your personal information from hundreds of websites. It’s what gives me peace of mind and has proven to be the most effective way to erase your personal data from the internet. By limiting the information available, you reduce the risk of scammers cross-referencing data from breaches with information they might find on the dark web, making it harder for them to target you.

Passwords have served us for decades, but they are no longer enough to protect our digital identities. Passkeys make signing in faster, easier and significantly more secure by removing the weaknesses of traditional passwords. Ancient Canaanite ritual artifacts and winepress unearthed near Tel Megiddo

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Ritual artifacts belonging to the Canaanites, an ancient people referenced in the Old Testament, were recently found in Israel — along with a 5,000-year-old wine press.

The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced the find near Tel Megiddo on Nov. 5. The excavation was carried out alongside the construction of Highway 66 in the Jezreel Valley.

Tel Megiddo is famously referenced in the Book of Revelation. The site is referred to as “Armageddon,” closely related to the Hebrew phrase “Har Megiddo,” which translates to “mountain of Megiddo.”

ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNCOVER 1,600-YEAR-OLD WINE FACTORY HIDDEN NEAR ANCIENT MOUNTAIN CASTLE

In terms of time frame, the finds ranged from Israel’s Early Bronze Age, around 3000 B.C., to the Late Bronze Age, about 1270 B.C.

The standout artifact was the rock-carved wine press, which officials described as the oldest ever discovered in Israel.

Archaeologists uncovered artifacts and a 5,000-year-old wine press near Tel Megiddo, a site linked to biblical Armageddon, depicted at right. (Assaf Peretz, Israel Antiquities Authority; Fine Art Images/Heritage Images/Getty Images)

“This wine press is unique, one of very few known from such an ancient period when urbanization first took place in our region,” officials said in a statement.

“Until now, indirect evidence indicated that wine could have been produced 5,000 years ago, but we did not have conclusive proof of this. … [T]his wine press finally provides new and clear evidence that early wine production actually took place here.”

ANCIENT ESTATE TIED TO GROUP IN THE BIBLE UNEARTHED WITH ‘FASCINATING’ TREASURES IN ISRAEL

Archaeologists also found intriguing and fully intact evidence of a Canaanite folk cult dating back 3,300 years, including a ceramic model of a shrine and animal-shaped ritual vessels.

The IAA said the vessels “were carefully placed in the ground in an orderly burial as ritual offerings.”

“These included a miniature ceramic model of a shrine, storage jars, imported jugs and juglets from Cyprus, and a unique and impressive set of vessels, which was probably used for libations, or the ceremonial pouring of liquids,” the release said.

Historians believe it was used to pour valuable liquids — such as milk, oil or wine — into a funnel during ceremonies.

The burial locations suggest a folk cult operated outside the city, possibly comprised of local farmers who couldn’t enter the main temple.

“[The finds] allow us to become acquainted with the daily life and beliefs of the region’s residents over the course of thousands of years.”

This allowed them to “offer consecrations of liquids or valuable agricultural produce,” the release said.

“Some of these offerings were discovered as intact pottery vessels buried next to a large rock outcrop, which may have served as an open-air altar outside the Canaanite city of Megiddo,” researchers said.

In a statement, officials said the recent excavation “revealed a new part of the matrix between the known settlements in the city.”

They added, “The 5,000-year-old hewn wine press places the beginnings of the local wine industry in a very early urban-settlement context, while the offerings from the period about 3,300 years ago indicate the continuity of ritual consecration and libations outside the sacred complex within the tell, possibly expressing aspects of the local Canaanite folk cult.”

Eli Escusido, IAA director, said the finds are “revealing, layer by layer, the wealth of history hidden and embedded in the soil here.”

He added, “The exposure of ancient wine-making facilities, and the evidence of folk worship outside of Megiddo, allow us to become acquainted with the daily life and beliefs of the region’s residents over the course of thousands of years.”

This isn’t the only recent discovery made at the Tel Megiddo site.

Earlier this year, archaeologists announced they’d found evidence of a biblical battle at the site.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, archaeologist Assaf Kleiman said pottery at the site suggested the presence of an Egyptian army, particularly the soldiers that defeated King Josiah.

“The exposure of so many Egyptian vessels, including fragments of serving bowls, cooking pots and storage jars, is an exceptional phenomenon,” said Kleiman.

“We, therefore, understand it as representing Egyptians who settled at Megiddo in the late 7th century, maybe as part of an army force that arrived at the site following the collapse of the Assyrian Empire.”

William & Mary students launch Turning Point USA chapter amid peer backlash

Students at the College of William & Mary, the second-oldest university in the United States, are launching a Turning Point USA chapter despite social media backlash and pushback from peers.

Olivia Keller, a sophomore at William and Mary, told Fox News Digital in an interview Wednesday that the school administration has been supportive, but her peers haven’t been.

Most of the resistance has been on social media app YikYak, because she thinks students are more comfortable attacking the club behind a screen rather than face-to-face.

“There has been a lot of discussion on that platform among students,” Keller said. “So they’ve been pretty opposed to our efforts with this new club. They’ve made comments about the exec members on the club, they’ve made fun of it when Charlie Kirk was assassinated. They were saying, ‘Oh, we haven’t heard a racist comment in a while that’s awesome.’ So it’s just some really, really inappropriate stuff on there. But in person I haven’t really had any kind of interaction that was as bad as online, as I mean it’s face-to-face versus online, so like they’re definitely more scared to say something in person.”

The 20-year-old student told Fox News Digital that she reached out to campus security after learning that other students planned to protest the group’s Oct. 20 informational meeting.

“When that was brought to my attention, I had never dealt with a protest before. I wasn’t sure how big it was going to be, how many people would actually show up, or how disruptive they would be,” Keller said. “So I did feel the need to get security outside of our meeting. And the faculty and staff were really easy to communicate with to get those security guards outside.”

Keller, who is a marketing major, said she has noticed a drastic decrease in her friends following her on social media platforms like Instagram after posting about Kirk’s assassination.

The 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA was assassinated on Sept. 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University during his “American Comeback Tour.”

Keller claimed that about 200 friends on Instagram unfollowed her after she posted a “rest in peace” tribute to Kirk after his assassination, and that more unfollowed her Monday when she shared a post for Veterans Day.

Keller said she thinks conservative students tend to face a tougher environment on campus as opposed to their liberal peers.

“Even the College Republicans, they face a lot of backlash, and they’re pretty loud about their beliefs,” Keller said. “When Trump was elected the previous year, they were wearing the MAGA hats and stuff, and so they were commented on a lot, like there were a lot of disagreements.”

Keller said she had been a “closeted conservative” but decided to speak up despite the risks.

“Me personally, I’ve been more of what I would say, a closeted conservative on campus until this year, just because I feel like if I were to speak up, I would just be, attacked or, like, basically condemned,” Keller said.

Her advice to students finding themselves in a similar position who want to start a conservative club in a left-leaning institution is to be “bold.”

“In today’s world, I think it’s really important to be bold about these beliefs,” Keller said. “And even if your peers disagree with you, in the long run, you’re gonna find your own community with people who have similar values and those are gonna be the more important relationships.”

Trump’s zero tolerance meets China’s Venezuela power grab amid sanctions

As President Donald Trump warns of “zero tolerance” for narco-states in America’s backyard, China is tightening its grip on Venezuela — a high-risk economic and political bet that could soon collide with U.S. power.

U.S. defense officials confirmed to Reuters last month that a U.S. aircraft carrier strike group had entered the Southern Command region, which covers the Caribbean and the northern coast of South America, to monitor narcotrafficking routes linked to Venezuela’s military leadership.

The Pentagon said the arrival of USS Gerald R. Ford, carrying more than 4,000 sailors and dozens of tactical aircraft, would “bolster US capacity to detect, monitor, and disrupt illicit actors and activities.” It added that the mission aims to “degrade and dismantle transnational criminal organizations.”

Within weeks, Venezuelan officers were reportedly training for guerrilla-style defense against a possible U.S. strike — an acknowledgment, according to Reuters, of “rising anxiety inside Caracas.”

Into this standoff, Beijing unveiled a “zero-tariff” trade agreement with Caracas at the Shanghai Expo 2025, announced by Deputy Minister for Foreign Trade Coromoto Godoy. Venezuelan officials said the accord covers roughly 400 tariff categories, removing duties on Chinese and Venezuelan goods.

While final implementation details remain pending verification, the goal is clear: Beijing is moving fast into a sanctioned economy that Washington has sought to isolate.

“This really looks like China is going to completely take over the Venezuelan economy,” said Gordon Chang, an expert on China’s global trade strategy. “It’s going to decimate Venezuela’s local industry.”

“Venezuela basically sells petroleum to China and very little else,” he said. “China, of course, is a manufacturer of many, many items. Venezuelan manufacturing is not going to experience a renaissance anytime soon — it’s going the opposite direction.”

Chang added that Maduro’s sudden embrace of Beijing stems from fear of Trump’s next move.

“Maduro probably doesn’t have a choice,” he said. “He realizes he’s got a problem in the form of Donald J. Trump. There’s a U.S. aircraft carrier not far from his shores, and a lot of military assets bearing down on him. He needs a friend, and he’s desperate.”

“For Maduro, the zero-tariff pact may offer temporary relief — but it only deepens dependence,” Chang added. “I don’t see this trade deal as strengthening Venezuela. I see it strengthening China’s stranglehold over Venezuela.”

From Beijing’s perspective, the tariff-free pact opens a commercial and strategic doorway into the Western Hemisphere just as Washington doubles down on sanctions.

The Council on Foreign Relations estimates that China has extended around $60 billion in loans to Venezuela over the past two decades, much of it repaid through oil shipments — a figure still cited by both Chinese and Venezuelan officials in 2025.

“China has leveraged multibillion-dollar loans and the establishment of satellite positioning and surveillance facilities to secure strategic control over Venezuela’s natural resources and critical infrastructure,” said Isaias Medina III, an Edward Mason Fellow at Harvard University and a former Venezuelan diplomat to the U.N. Security Council.

Medina was referring to the El Sombrero satellite ground station in Venezuela’s Guárico province — a joint China-Venezuela project that Western analysts, including a recent Associated Press report, describe as part of a wider space cooperation network giving Beijing an intelligence foothold in Latin America.

Medina said the new pact must be understood as one layer in a wider anti-Western alignment.

“Under the banner of so-called ‘21st Century Socialism,’ initiated by Hugo Chávez and expanded by Nicolás Maduro, the nation has evolved into a forward operating base for regimes openly hostile to the United States and its allies,” he said.

“Iran, Russia, China, and Cuba have entrenched themselves across Venezuelan territory, using the country as a platform for asymmetric warfare, intelligence operations, and ideological expansion throughout Latin America.”

He noted that “Russia’s military footprint includes more than $12 billion in arms sales and ongoing defense cooperation and Wagner Group presence in military exercises,” while Cuban military advisers remain embedded inside Venezuelan security institutions.

“Iran has exploited this environment to embed terrorist proxies such as Hezbollah and Hamas, using Venezuela as both a financial hub and a logistical corridor. These activities extend to former training camps in Syria, where Venezuelan operatives and mercenaries have been indoctrinated in hybrid warfare tactics,” he added. “Iranian interest includes potential drone manufacturing and uranium mining.”

“The Maduro government, shielded by the absence of the rule of law or legitimate governance, has replaced statecraft with criminal enterprise,” Medina said. “Grand corruption is not the exception; it is the system.”

Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela

“The humanitarian toll is catastrophic,” he added. “Over 30% of Venezuela’s population has been forcibly displaced. Starvation has been weaponized as a tool of social control, amounting to a war crime under international law. Despite the enormity of these crimes, many United Nations member states continue to recognize and engage with this illegitimate regime, thereby perpetuating its impunity. The failure to confront this crisis decisively enables a coalition of adversaries, state and non-state actors alike, to project power dangerously close to U.S. territory.”

For now, Washington’s sanctions campaign still constrains Venezuela’s oil lifelines. In March 2025, Reuters reported that U.S. threats to impose tariffs on nations buying Venezuelan crude caused a temporary disruption in shipments to China. Beijing dismissed the measures as “illegal extraterritorial actions” and vowed to continue cooperation — but has not disclosed how it will enforce the new tariff-free pact.

Chang said the underlying reality hasn’t changed: China can’t protect Caracas from U.S. hard power.

“It can certainly launch a propaganda blitz,” he said, “but it can’t project military force in the region. It’s really up to what President Trump does. China does not have the military strength to oppose American intervention if that’s what Trump decides.”

Medina agreed that the stakes reach beyond economics. “Just three hours from U.S. shores, this narco-terrorist regime has become the operational convergence of organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and human rights atrocities,” he said, urging a Western response combining “diplomatic isolation, targeted sanctions, and, when necessary, defensive deployments.”

Parents fear AI scams targeting kids but avoid safety conversations

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Kids are spending more time online than ever, and that early exposure is opening the door to a new kind of danger.

Artificial intelligence has supercharged online scams, creating personalized and convincing traps that even adults can fall for. The latest Bitwarden “Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2025” poll shows that while parents know these risks exist, most still haven’t had a serious talk with their children about them.

This growing communication gap is leaving the youngest internet users vulnerable at a time when online safety depends more than ever on education and oversight.

Young children face real risks online

Children as young as preschool age are now part of the connected world, yet few truly understand how to stay safe. The Bitwarden survey found that 42% of parents with children between three and five years old said their child had accidentally shared personal information online.

5 PHONE SAFETY TIPS EVERY PARENT SHOULD KNOW

AI-powered scams are finding new ways to reach kids who go online earlier than ever. (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

Nearly 80% of kids between the ages of three and twelve already have their own tablet or another connected device. Many parents assume supervision software or family settings are enough, but that assumption breaks down when kids explore apps, games and chat spaces designed to hold their attention. Device access has become nearly universal by early elementary school, but meaningful supervision and honest safety conversations are lagging behind.

The AI threat and the parental disconnect

Artificial intelligence has changed the nature of online scams by making them sound familiar, personal and hard to recognize. Bitwarden’s data shows that 78% of parents worry their child could fall for an AI-enhanced threat, such as a voice-cloned message or a fake chat with a friend. Despite that fear, almost half of those same parents haven’t talked with their kids about what an AI-powered scam might look like. The disconnect is even stronger among Gen Z parents.

About 80% of them say they are afraid their child will fall victim to an AI-based scheme, yet 37% allow their kids full or nearly full autonomy online. In those households, problems are more common. Malware infections, unauthorized in-app purchases and phishing attempts appear at the highest rates among families who worry the most but monitor the least. The paradox is clear. Parents recognize the threat but fail to translate awareness into consistent action.

Why parents haven’t had the talk

There are many reasons this important talk keeps getting delayed. Some parents simply feel unprepared to explain AI, while others assume their existing safety tools will protect their children. Only 17% of parents in the United States actively seek information about AI technologies, according to related research by Barna Group. That leaves a large majority relying on partial knowledge or outdated advice.

Many parents also juggle multiple devices at home, making it difficult to track every app or game their child uses. Some overestimate how safe their own habits are, even though they admit to reusing passwords or skipping security updates. Without firsthand understanding or personal discipline, it becomes even harder to teach those lessons to children. As a result, many kids face the internet with curiosity but without proper guidance.

Smart ways to protect your child online

The Bitwarden findings make one thing clear: kids are getting connected younger, and scams powered by artificial intelligence are already targeting them. The good news is that parents can take practical steps right now to reduce those risks and build lasting online safety habits.

1) Keep devices where you can see them

Set up tablets, laptops and gaming consoles in shared family areas rather than bedrooms. When screens stay visible, you naturally become part of your child’s online world. This not only encourages open conversation but also helps spot suspicious messages, fake friend requests or scam links before they cause trouble.

2) Use built-in parental controls

Most devices have strong tools you can activate in minutes. Apple’s Screen Time and Google Family Link let you limit screen time, approve new app installs and monitor how long your child spends on specific apps. These controls are especially useful for younger kids who, according to the Bitwarden poll, often have little supervision despite heavy device use.

3) Talk through every download

Before your child installs a new game or app, take a moment to check it together. Read the reviews, look at what data it collects and confirm the developer’s name. Explain why some games or “free” apps might ask for camera or contact access they don’t need. This kind of shared review teaches healthy skepticism and helps children recognize red flags later on.

4) Make password strength and 2FA a family rule

AI scams thrive on weak or reused passwords. Use a password manager to create and store strong, unique logins for each account. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever possible so that even if a password is stolen, the account stays protected. Let your kids see how you use these tools so they learn that security isn’t complicated, it’s just a habit.

Our No. 1 password manager pick includes a built-in breach scanner that checks whether your email address or passwords have appeared in known leaks. If you discover a match, immediately change any reused passwords and secure those accounts with new, unique credentials.

5) Teach them to stop and tell

One of the best defenses is simple: encourage your child to pause and talk before reacting to anything unusual online. Whether it’s a pop-up claiming a prize, a strange link in a chat or a voice message that sounds familiar, remind them it’s always okay to ask you first. Quick conversations like these can prevent costly mistakes and turn learning moments into trust-building ones.

6) Keep devices updated and use strong antivirus software

Outdated software can leave gaps that scammers exploit. Regularly update operating systems, browsers and apps to close those holes. Add strong antivirus software. Explain to your child that updates and scans keep their favorite games and videos running safely, not just their parents happy.

The best way to safeguard from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.

Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices at Cyberguy.com.

7) Make online safety part of everyday life

Don’t save these conversations for when something goes wrong. Bring them up casually during family time or when watching YouTube or gaming together. Treat digital safety like any other life skill, something practiced daily and improved with time. The more normal it feels, the more confident your child becomes when facing online risks.

A mother watches her son surf the web.

Talking about online safety early helps build trust and awareness before trouble starts.  (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

What this means for you

If you are a parent, guardian or anyone helping a child use technology, this issue deserves your attention. Start talking early, even before your child begins exploring the web on their own. Teach them simple concepts like asking before clicking or sharing. Instead of relying only on parental controls, have ongoing conversations that help them recognize suspicious links, messages or pop-ups. Show them that cybersecurity isn’t about fear but about awareness. Model strong digital habits at home by using unique passwords and turning on two-factor authentication. Explain why those steps matter. When your child understands the reasoning behind the rules, they are more likely to follow them. Make technology part of your family routine rather than a private space your child navigates alone. Regularly check the apps they use and the people they interact with. Set clear expectations and age-appropriate boundaries that can grow with your child’s experience. Staying engaged is the most powerful protection you can offer.

Kurt’s key takeaways

The numbers from Bitwarden show a clear warning sign. Concern among parents is high, yet actual conversations about AI-powered scams remain rare. That silence gives scammers the upper hand. Children who learn about online safety early are more confident, more cautious and better equipped to handle unexpected messages or fake alerts. It only takes a few minutes of honest conversation to create awareness that lasts for years. By taking action now, you can close the gap between fear and understanding, protecting your family in a digital world that changes every day.
