President Joe Biden’s debate gamble backfires

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Democrats exited the presidential debate Thursday night in a panic as President Biden’s appearance left a nation questioning his ability to govern for another term.

While well-prepared with facts and figures, Biden’s shaky voice and rickety manner without a Teleprompter, quickly became the headline of this debate.

The raspy speech, the halting nature of some of the answers and occasional lapses into non sequiturs revealed a Biden that had been carefully shielded from view.

BIDEN RIPPED FOR ‘OLD’ APPEARANCE, ‘WEAK’ VOICE DURING FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE: ‘DEEPLY ALARMING’

It will be hard for Biden to recover from this performance and the risky gamble that the campaign took with an early debate.

There were no “cheap fake” videos here. The real videos will fill the internet Friday as the spin about a debate can be even more important than the debate; and the spin from this debate is all in one direction.

Just about every focus group and pundit agrees that the Biden campaign took on a lot of water. It was already behind in the polls, and this was supposed to be the game changer that lifted it up.

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE SHOWDOWN BETWEEN BIDEN, TRUMP WAS FESTIVAL OF THE UNPRECEDENTED

About the best thing the campaign can hope for is that a well-staged convention can undo this damage and that they can get their candidate another look. There will be chatter about a new nominee but, as David Axelrod observed, the delegates have been chosen and the votes cast in a democratic process and the only person who can change that is Joe Biden himself. The party will continue to close ranks behind Biden.

President Biden’s campaign was already behind in the polls, and this event was supposed to be the game changer that lifted it up.

In contrast, former President Donald Trump kept his cool no matter what insults were hurled at him. He had fewer facts and figures at his command, but he drilled his immigration message over and over again.

He shot down the various traps thrown at him about retribution, honoring election results and January 6th, which he blamed on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, claiming she turned down the 10,000 national guard Trump said he offered beforehand.

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE SHOWDOWN BETWEEN BIDEN, TRUMP WAS FESTIVAL OF THE UNPRECEDENTED

There was no handshake before or after this deeply personal debate that threw charges of “felon,” “criminal” and “liar” back and forth.

The low point of the debate was the serious squabble over golf handicapping.

Why did the president’s team invite this debate? That’s a question that will be debated for a long time.

The moderators were surprisingly fair — asking reasonably issue-oriented and relevant questions across domestic and foreign affairs. They were polite and asked candidates to address their questions but didn’t comment when they didn’t.

On the issues, Trump generally played it smart, always returning to immigration. He said his retribution would be “success” and shot down the idea of a national abortion ban.

He surprisingly did not repeat his policy of no tax on tips. He defended the corporate tax cuts and his policy on China. His best line was likely calling Biden a Palestinian, and a bad one at that, and said he would have let Israel finish the job.

By the end, Biden threw every name and negative story he had in his bin against Trump, regardless of whether they had been debunked or not.  Trump returned the fire. Voters really don’t care about their personal antagonism.

In the end, it really didn’t matter what the candidates said, but rather how they said it. Trump didn’t appear to have prepared much for this debate, with the exception of his obvious determination to stay cool. He met that objective.

Biden clearly had tried to memorize his closing and other key answers, but it just did not help him.

Obviously, the refusal of Attorney General Garland to turn over Special Counsel Robert Hur’s tapes from his interview with the president will meet renewed calls, since it is more than possible that those tapes reflect an unsteady president, and the transcripts may have been edited.

Whether it was Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. or Dean Phillips, Democrats went to extreme lengths to eliminate a Democratic primary race. Biden was untested by that process and has been able to avoid all but the most favorable settings until this debate.

So why did the president’s team invite this debate? That’s a question that will be debated for a long time.

Regardless of the setting or the rules, Donald Trump, despite a lead in the polls, decided immediately to accept the opportunity. He was confident that he would show up stronger and more coherent than Biden.

Ultimately, he was right.

Daily multivitamins might not help you live longer, study finds

0

Approximately one-third of U.S. adults report taking multivitamins, data shows — but a new study suggests that the daily practice won’t extend longevity.

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) analyzed more than 20 years’ worth of data from 400,000 healthy U.S. adults, concluding that taking multivitamins did not reduce mortality risk.

“The analysis showed that people who took daily multivitamins did not have a lower risk of death from any cause than people who took no multivitamins,” the researchers wrote in a press release from NIH.

“There were also no differences in mortality from cancer, heart disease or cerebrovascular diseases.”

Those who took daily multivitamins were actually found to have a 4% higher mortality risk, according to the study, which was published in JAMA Network Open on Wednesday.

The average age of participants was 61-½, and 164, 762 deaths occurred during the follow-up period.

“People who use multivitamins may have healthier lifestyles in general, and sicker patients may be more likely to increase their use of multivitamins.”

Results were adjusted for factors including race, ethnicity, education and nutrition.

The study followed a 2022 analysis from the US Preventive Services Task Force, which concluded that there was “insufficient evidence” to determine whether multivitamin use improved mortality.

By including larger numbers of participants and extending the follow-up for longer periods of time, the researchers aimed to account for potential biases that could have influenced the findings.

“For example, people who use multivitamins may have healthier lifestyles in general, and sicker patients may be more likely to increase their use of multivitamins,” they wrote in a press release from NIH.

IMPROVING MEMORY MAY BE AS EASY AS POPPING A MULTIVITAMIN, STUDY FINDS: ‘PREVENTS VASCULAR DEMENTIA’

Pieter Cohen, associate professor of medicine at the Cambridge Health Alliance in Massachusetts, was not involved in the study but offered his feedback.

“This study provides further evidence that taking multivitamins, even for 20 years or more, won’t extend your life,” he told Fox News Digital.

“For healthy adults, there’s no reason to add on a multivitamin unless your doctor specifically recommends it.”

Doctor points out limitations

Dr. Brett Osborn, a Florida neurologist and longevity expert, was also not involved in the study but weighed in on the findings.

“Key aspects of the study include its observational nature, the absence of a control group, and the variability in multivitamin formulations used by participants,” he said in an email to Fox News Digital.

(The researchers also acknowledged these limitations in their discussion of the study results.)

“Most multivitamins contain a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals, but the concentrations can vary widely across brands and formulations,” a doctor said.  (iStock)

“Observational studies like this one can suggest associations or correlations, but cannot prove causation due to the potential for confounding variables influencing both multivitamin use and mortality outcomes,” Osborn said.

While the researchers noted that they had adjusted for factors such as demographics, lifestyle behaviors and health status, Osborn said, “residual confounding remains a concern.”

The doctor also noted that lack of a control group makes it difficult to compare outcomes.

CANCER IMMUNITY GETS A BOOST FROM ONE COMMON NUTRIENT, STUDY FINDS: ‘INTRIGUE AND OPTIMISM’

“Without a control group, it’s challenging to separate the effects of multivitamins from those of other health behaviors or baseline health conditions that could influence mortality,” Osborn said.

The study also does not include controls for the specific formulation or dosage of multivitamins taken by participants, the doctor noted.

The study highlights the importance of “rigorous scientific inquiry” into the health benefits of multivitamins, a doctor said. (iStock)

“Most multivitamins contain a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals, but the concentrations can vary widely across brands and formulations,” he said.

“Many commercially available multivitamins may not provide optimal levels of nutrients required for health benefits, potentially diluting any potential effects on longevity.”

In his practice, Osborn said, he recommends a multi-capsule daily multivitamin to his patients.

Vitamin usage is just one aspect of longevity, the doctor pointed out, along with genetics, lifestyle, socioeconomic status and access to health care, among other factors.

“The multifactorial nature of longevity means that isolating the impact of multivitamins alone is complex and challenging, if not impossible,” Osborn said.

“There are just too many potentially confounding variables.”

“In my opinion, multivitamins should be taken, as most Americans are malnourished — certainly not calorically, but in the context of vitamins and minerals.”

Looking ahead, the researchers emphasized the importance of measuring multivitamins’ impact on mortality in more diverse populations with different medical conditions and dietary habits.

“It is important to evaluate multivitamin use and risk of death among different kinds of populations, such as those with documented nutritional deficiencies, as well as the potential impact of regular multivitamin use on other health conditions associated with aging,” they wrote.

Indoor security cameras

Indoor security cameras are designed to focus on the inside of your home or business. There’s a wide range of indoor security cameras on the market, all with their own features. Some cameras have built-in microphones for audio recording, and others feature a wide-angle lens for wide-room coverage.

Some indoor cameras are designed for use at night and feature infrared night vision for low-light conditions, while other cameras come with a remote viewing app that allows you to check in on your security camera at any time.

Outdoor security cameras

Outdoor cameras tend to be more expensive than their indoor counterparts, in large part because they are constructed with weather-resistant materials. Many outdoor cameras are fully waterproofed and, just like indoor cameras, include a wide range of features.

Some outdoor cameras feature motion-activated recording, while others feature two-way audio for communication. Doorbell cameras are a good example of outdoor cameras that are used every day.

Features to look for in an indoor or outdoor camera

After you decide whether you need an indoor or outdoor camera or both, it’s time to consider features. Here are the key features to consider when choosing a security camera.

1. Resolution

You will want to look for cameras that have a high resolution for clear and detailed images. We suggest not buying a camera unless it has a minimum resolution of 720p, 1080p or 4K.

2. Field of view

We suggest buying a security camera with a wide-angle lens, as wide-angle lenses provide a larger coverage area. I learned the hard way that placement out of reach but still low enough to capture faces is important. One intruder was disguised by his hoodie when my cameras were mounted too high.

3. Night vision

If you need a security camera for outdoor use, it’s a good idea to pick one with a night vision feature for clear footage in low-light conditions.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

4. Motion detection

Cameras with motion sensors can alert you when movement is detected and save valuable storage space by only recording relevant footage.

5. Audio

Two-way audio will allow you to communicate through a camera, which can be useful for speaking with visitors.

6. Storage

You’ll need to decide whether you want local storage (SD Cards or DVR) or cloud storage for recorded storage. Cloud storage will allow you to store more information, while SD cards are a better option for offline or localized access.

7. Connectivity

Cameras with Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity allow remote viewing and control through mobile apps and web interfaces.

8. Weatherproofing

When buying an outdoor camera, you should choose one that is rated for your climate. We recommend buying a camera with either an IP65 or an IP66 weather rating.

9. Smart features

Some cameras on the market offer additional features such as facial recognition, integration with other smart home systems and customizable alert zones. I deploy this at our home to warn when an unexpected person is roaming outside in areas not open to the public.

10. Brand reputation and customer support

Invest in a security camera from a reputable brand that is known for reliable products and good customer support.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR PRIVATE DATA FROM THE INTERNET

Use strong and unique passwords

Create strong passwords for your accounts and devices, and avoid using the same password for multiple online accounts. Consider using a password manager to securely store and generate complex passwords. It will help you to create unique and difficult-to-crack passwords that a hacker could never guess.

Second, it also keeps track of all your passwords in one place and fills passwords in for you when you’re logging into an account so that you never have to remember them yourself. The fewer passwords you remember, the less likely you will be to reuse them for your accounts.

When it comes to choosing the best password manager for you, here are some of my top tips.

  • Deploys secure
  • Works seamlessly across all of your devices
  • Creates unique complicated passwords that are different for every account
  • Automatically populates login and password fields for apps and sites you revisit
  • Has a browser extension for all browsers you use to automatically insert passwords for you
  • Allows a fail-safe in case the primary password is ever lost or forgotten
  • Checks that your existing passwords remain safe and alerts you if ever compromised
  • Uses two-factor authentication security

Rock ‘n’ roll lovers on a musical mecca throughout the South are likely, during their travels, to make a stop at the famed recording studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

But just a few miles away in the nearby city of Tuscumbia lies another legendary locale — attracting its own enthusiastic visitors. (See the video at the top of this piece, plus another video within this article.)

Not far from the Tennessee River sits Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller. The American woman overcame her inability to see or hear at an early age and emerged an acclaimed author and advocate for disability rights.

MIGHTY MUSCLE SHOALS, ALABAMA FLEXES ITS LEGACY AS BIRTHPLACE OF GLOBAL MUSIC AND MIRACLES

It’s also the setting of William Gibson’s “The Miracle Worker” stage play, based on Keller’s 1903 autobiography “The Story of My Life.”

Not only is Ivy Green the central location for Gibson’s Tony Award-winning play, but each summer the grounds become the centerpiece of the tale of Keller’s early home struggles. Teacher Annie Sullivan, as Keller once wrote of their relationship, “gave me love and opened my mind and helped me acquire knowledge and greatness of life.”

Sullivan, partially blinded herself at age 5, had traveled from Boston to Alabama in 1887 to teach Keller.

The performances of “The Miracle Worker” during the last weekend of June coincide with the annual Helen Keller Festival, which Colbert County, Alabama, tourism president Susann Hamlin described to Fox News Digital as a “typical southern festival paying homage to Helen Keller.”

The four-day festival is held each year in June to commemorate Keller’s birthday on June 27, 1880.

About 50,000 visitors flock to Ivy Green every year, Hamlin said, many of whom take part in the festivities.

‘The Miracle Worker’ performances span generations

Now in its 63rd year, “The Miracle Worker” at Ivy Green is more than just an acting opportunity for its 13-year-old star.

Lillie Meyer, in her third season of portraying Keller on the stage, was always interested in Keller’s life story, but Meyer said the experience has been educational.

“I thought, before I started this, that I knew a lot about her, but now I realize that I didn’t,” Meyer told Fox News Digital in a video interview.

“The Miracle Worker” at Ivy Green has been Alabama’s official state outdoor drama since 1991, according to its website.

The inaugural performance on the property took place on June 29, 1962 – the same year the play was adapted into a film starring Patty Duke as Keller and Anne Bancroft as Sullivan (performances that earned Oscars for both actresses).

Initially, the play was staged behind the house near the well pump where Sullivan taught Keller her first word, Hamlin said.

“They had so many people coming that they built this outdoor theater there, which made it more comfortable and better, I’m sure, from that early time when it first started,” Hamlin explained.

10 MOST PATRIOTIC STATES AHEAD OF JULY 4: SEE IF YOUR HOME STATE MADE THE LIST

Even Gibson, the late playwright whom Hamlin said visited Keller’s childhood home for the first time in 1996 before his death, was “so impressed” and “amazed at how they were able to bring the Helen Keller story to life right there at Ivy Green.”

Being a part of “The Miracle Worker” in Keller’s backyard makes it extra special for Meyer.

“It is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said.

The part is also the “most challenging” for a relative newcomer. “It is a very different character from what you might see in other shows,” Meyer said.

2 OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GARDENS IN THE WORLD ARE IN THE US, THE OTHERS ARE SCATTERED ACROSS THE GLOBE

The young actress described undergoing training that spanned “a couple of weeks” spent with her “Helen coach” (a previous performer), during which time she learned the physical movements necessary for the role.

“The show is very physical throughout,” she said, referring to Keller’s scripted tantrums.

‘Simplistic’ beauty

Magnolia trees — which have been at Ivy Green since the house was built in 1820 — greet visitors, Hamlin said.

“The grounds are immaculately kept,” she said.

Inside the “simplistic” house with green shutters and a wooden shingle roof, tour guides take visitors through each room, sharing tales of Keller’s life.

“It’s not a huge home, but it’s beautiful,” Hamlin said.

Guests can see the mostly authentic furnishings on the inside. Hamlin said 85% of the furnishings at Ivy Green are original, including the beds where Keller and Sullivan slept and the pre-Civil War cutlery on the dining room table.

TOP SUMMER TRAVEL DESTINATIONS FOR 2024: THESE INTERNATIONAL SPOTS WERE THE MOST SEARCHED

Thanks to the Helen Keller Festival, Hamlin said, this weekend’s guests will also be treated to a parade through downtown Tuscumbia.

There is also live music and a children’s program in which “they learn to, sort of, relive the days of blind and deaf children just as Helen had to do it.”

16 Nobel Prize-winning economists claim Trump will wreck our economy. This is the reason I don’t trust them

There they go again. Sixteen Nobel Prize-winning economists recently penned an open letter arguing that “[President] Biden’s economic agenda is vastly superior to [President] Trump [sic].”  The principal argument, echoing recent Democratic talking points, is that a second Trump presidency could actually increase inflation.  Never mind that inflation never materially exceeded 2% during the Trump administration, nor that President Biden has presided over the highest inflation in 40 years.

The field of economics purports to be a science, priding itself on intellectual rigor and evidence-based assessments.  Yet just as campus protests lifted the veil on the radical, fact-free academic culture that infects many American universities, academic economists’ recent record of political advocacy is a potent reminder of why Americans have come to dismiss the dismal science.

The contrast between President Trump and President Biden’s economic records could not be more clear.  President Trump’s record of tax reform and deregulation powered the American economy to the fastest real wage increases in a generation.  Real incomes increased by nearly 10% from 2017 to 2019, with real wages rising fastest among lower income workers.

TOP ECONOMISTS CLAIM TRUMP WILL BE AN ECONOMIC DISASTER—THEY SAID THE SAME THING IN 2016

The Biden administration’s blowout spending and regulatory restraints on the supply side of the economy unleashed insidiously persistent inflation that has eroded Americans’ finances and purchasing power.  The median inflation-adjusted income for American families has fallen by $2,080 since 2020.  In contrast, real median income increased by $4,400 in 2019 alone, a record increase for a single year.

Americans’ dissatisfaction with Bidenomics comes not from social media or bad press coverage, but from their lived experience of rising standards of living under President Trump and economic hardship under President Biden.

Thirteen of these Nobel laureates also signed a 2021 letter in support of the American Rescue Plan and the broader Biden economic agenda, just as it ignited an inflationary surge that peaked at 9.1% in June 2022.  The first signature on both letters comes from George Akerlof, a 2001 Nobel laureate who is married to President Biden’s Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen.  This is transparent political advocacy, laundered through the imprimatur of the economics profession.

The further politicization of economic ‘science’ is an unwelcome development for a discipline that should be focused on rebuilding its credibility after the economic policy errors of recent years.

Academic economists have consistently discredited themselves by wrongly warning against the policies of President Trump. In 2020, more than 700 economists, including several Nobel laureates, penned a letter arguing that President Biden’s economic policies would be better for the U.S. economy.

Similarly, a group of 370 economists, including eight Nobel laureates, warned in November 2016 that a Trump administration posed a “unique danger…to the prosperity of the country.”

As we now know, aggregate real household net worth increased by 28% under President Trump, rising by over 120% for the bottom 50% of households. Under President Biden, real household net worth has stagnated, increasing only 2% on aggregate and 16% for the bottom 50% of households thus far. Evidently, political ideology, not sober analysis, guides much of the economics profession.

The further politicization of economic “science” is an unwelcome development for a discipline that should be focused on rebuilding its credibility after the economic policy errors of recent years. Contrary to the public predictions of many of these economists, it was not inflation, but their credibility, that turned out to be transitory.

Harry Truman is said to have asked for a “one-handed economist”—because all the economists he knew seemed to want to have it both ways: “On the one hand … but on the other …”

Today’s economists seem to have the opposite problem: Their certainty vastly exceeds their knowledge or predictive power. Given their recent records of motivated reasoning, the real wonder is that anyone takes their latest pronouncement seriously, instead of seeing it as the partisan gamesmanship it is.

A new solution may be on the horizon for the 30 million people in the U.S. who suffer from sleep apnea.

In a Finland study, a new breathing device showed promising results in reducing symptoms of the disorder, according to researchers.

The device, called WellO2, uses resistance training to strengthen throat muscles and steam breathing to humidify airways.

UNTREATED SLEEP APNEA PRESENTS ‘DISRUPTIVE’ DANGERS TO PEOPLE’S LIVES, INCLUDING HEART ISSUES, SAYS EXPERT

In the small study conducted by University of Turku’s Sleep Research Center, 25 participants with mild to moderate sleep apnea used the device at home twice a day for three months, breathing in and out 30 times per session.

At the end of the study period, the participants reported increased respiratory muscle strength, reduced nighttime breathing interruptions, improved sleep quality and decreased insomnia, according to a press release.

Snoring occurrences were also reduced.

The findings were presented on June 5 at the Nordic Lung Congress 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.

The study will now be peer-reviewed by the scientific congress, then will be published later this year, according to the researchers.

WellO2

The device, called WellO2, uses resistance training to strengthen throat muscles, plus steam breathing to humidify airways. (WellO2)

“Currently, there are no available technologies or medications to treat sleep apnea,” lead author Dr. Usame Al-Rammahi, a doctoral researcher of pulmonary diseases and clinical allergology at the University of Turku, told Fox News Digital.

“Our first data suggest that respiratory muscle training may be the answer that not only alleviates symptoms, but also addresses the underlying cause of OSA by strengthening muscles.”

IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE THE SECRET TO BETTER SLEEP?

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is currently the most common treatment for sleep apnea — but about a third of patients struggle to adapt to it, Al-Rammahi noted.

WellO2 is designed to be used as an add-on therapy with CPAP.

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is right now the most common treatment for sleep apnea, yet about a third of patients struggle to adapt to it. (iStock)

“Even though CPAP should be used as needed, WellO2 training can be used as an additional therapy, since it addresses underlying reasons and may lessen CPAP adverse effects by moistening the airways,” Al-Rammahi told Fox News Digital.

Limitations of the study

This is a preliminary report and research is currently ongoing, Al-Rammahi said.

The study also did not include a control group.

“There is no quick fix for respiratory rehabilitation.”

“Nonetheless, given that the study compared their results to each participant’s personal findings, those persons were the controls,” Al-Rammahi said.

“Despite the lack of a control group, the findings remain important. Qualified questionnaires were used, and polysomnography (PSG) was a thorough and trustworthy procedure that provided substantial results.”

Dr. Chelsie Rohrscheib, a neuroscientist and sleep specialist at Wesper in New York, was not involved in the study but commented on the device’s potential.

“Sleep apnea is primarily caused by obstructions in the upper airway that block the flow of oxygen into the lungs,” she said.

Snoring

“This device is designed to strengthen the muscles of the upper airway and reduce these obstructions from occurring,” she also told Fox News Digital.

While the device was shown to offer “some improvement” when tested in a small population of patients, Rohrscheib noted that use of the device was only correlated with “moderate improvement” in the number of respiratory events.

“That means it’s not guaranteed to work for every patient or to completely eliminate your sleep apnea symptoms,” she said.

“Further, the device was not tested in patients with severe sleep apnea — thus, patients should not rely on this device alone for treatment for their sleep apnea without the guidance of a sleep physician.”

WellO2

“Patients should not rely on this device alone for treatment for their sleep apnea without the guidance of a sleep physician,” a sleep expert said. (WellO2 )

Katri Lindberg, a respiratory specialist nurse in Finland who works with WellO2 as a breathing expert, said she recommends WellO2 training regularly for individuals who want to stop snoring or for whom CPAP devices are not suitable for treating sleep apnea

“The research results are only preliminary findings from a small study, but they provide strong indications that we have found a rehabilitation tool that can now rehabilitate the symptoms of a large group of people worldwide, rather than merely alleviating them,” Lindberg told Fox News Digital.

“The study also indicates that there is no quick fix for respiratory rehabilitation. To remove symptoms and keep them at bay, regular, although relatively small, amounts of respiratory training are needed.”
