Implement zero-knowledge encryption

One of the most robust security measures for cloud storage is implementing zero-knowledge encryption. This approach ensures that your data is encrypted before it leaves your device, and only you possess the encryption keys. Even the cloud storage provider cannot access or decrypt your files, providing an additional layer of protection against potential data breaches or unauthorized access.

Zero-knowledge encryption achieves true end-to-end encryption, where your files remain encrypted during transfer, storage, and retrieval. This eliminates the risk of your sensitive data being exposed, even if the cloud provider’s systems are compromised.

To implement zero-knowledge encryption, you can use third-party encryption tools or services that integrate with your cloud storage provider. These tools encrypt your files locally before uploading them to the cloud, ensuring that your data remains private and secure.

By incorporating zero-knowledge encryption into your cloud storage strategy, you can significantly enhance the security and privacy of your personal data, providing an additional layer of protection against potential threats and unauthorized access.

Have strong antivirus software

Securing your cloud storage starts with protecting the devices you use to access it. Malware infections on your computer, smartphone, or tablet can potentially compromise your login credentials and expose your cloud data.

It’s crucial to use a reputable and up-to-date antivirus solution on all your devices. Make sure to keep your antivirus software and operating systems updated with the latest security patches to mitigate emerging threats.

Additionally, be cautious when downloading files or clicking on links, even from trusted sources, as they may contain malicious code that can infect your device and jeopardize your cloud storage security.

The best way to protect yourself from clicking malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information is to have antivirus protection installed on all your devices. This can also alert you of any phishing emails or ransomware scams. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

Enable two-factor authentication

Most cloud storage providers offer an additional security feature called two-factor authentication (2FA). This adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone or an authenticator app, in addition to your password when logging in.

Enabling 2FA ensures that even if your password is compromised, unauthorized parties cannot access your cloud storage without the second factor. This significantly reduces the risk of account takeovers and unauthorized access to your files.

To set up 2FA, follow the instructions provided by your cloud storage provider in their security settings. It’s a simple yet effective way to enhance the security of your cloud storage accounts.

Limit sensitive data in the cloud

While cloud storage offers convenience and accessibility, it’s advisable to be selective about the type of data you store in the cloud. Avoid storing critical personal or financial information, legal documents, or proprietary business data in cloud storage services.

Instead, keep such sensitive files on secure local or offline storage solutions, such as encrypted external hard drives or secure network-attached storage devices. This minimizes the risk of exposing your most sensitive data in the event of a cloud storage breach or unauthorized access.

By following these additional security measures alongside the password protection methods and zero-knowledge encryption techniques outlined earlier, you can significantly enhance the overall security and privacy of your data in cloud storage services.

Kurt’s key takeaways

Sharing files and folders on Cloud and File Sharing services can make life a lot easier as you can share with others on the go. But keeping these files safe is also important since they are so accessible. While not all files can be password protected on every platform, each platform has ways to protect your files and folders by restricting access.

Five children who were born completely deaf have had some reversal of hearing loss after receiving a “groundbreaking” gene therapy.

The clinical trial, which was co-led by Mass Eye and Ear in Boston and the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai, was the first in the world to apply gene therapy to children in both ears, according to the researchers.

The research has just been published in Nature Medicine on June 5.

FITNESS CLASS TOO LOUD? WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT PROTECTING YOUR HEARING HEALTH

In addition to regaining their hearing, the children participating in the trial — who ranged in age from 1 to 11 years old — were also able to identify the origins and locations of sounds, even in noisy environments, researchers said.

This was a follow-up to an earlier trial that began in Dec. 2022, in which the research team successfully performed the gene therapy in just one ear. This new study showed that treating both ears led to even greater benefits.

Five children who were born completely deaf have had their hearing loss reversed after receiving a “groundbreaking” gene therapy. (Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University)

All the children in the study had a hereditary form of deafness called DFNB9, which is caused by mutations in the OTOF gene.

The condition occurs when the OTOF gene is unable to produce a protein called otoferlin, which is essential for transmitting sound signals from the ear to the brain.

As a result, the children could not hear or speak.

ARE NOISE-CANCELING HEADPHONES HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH? AUDIOLOGY EXPERTS SHARE WARNINGS

“The children were chosen because they would benefit most from early intervention of gene therapy, especially in speech acquisition,” study author Zheng-Yi Chen, DPhil, an associate scientist in the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston, told Fox News Digital in an interview.

“From a safety standpoint, however, it is more risky for children.”

How the procedure works

During the “minimally invasive” surgical procedure, the doctors administered an injection of the human OTOF gene into the children’s inner ears.

The children remained in the hospital for around seven to 10 days for observation.

“After four weeks, the kids showed hearing perception in tests, and then gradually they gained the ability to speak,” Chen said.

Dr. Shu with patient

Dr. Yilai Shu is shown communicating with a young patient at the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University. (Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University)

Within the families, response to sound was noticed within two to three weeks.

“All five patients have restoration of hearing, speech perception improvements, and sound source perception in noisy environments,” Chen said.

The participants experienced only low-grade adverse effects, such as fever and vomiting.

“This is the first time in history that hearing loss is being reversed by gene therapy.”

“There were no serious adverse effects,” he said. “They all recovered without any intervention.”

The gene therapy is intended to be a one-time treatment and will not need to be repeated, the researchers said, although the children will likely require speech therapy.

ASK A DOCTOR: ‘WHY ARE MY EARS RINGING, AND SHOULD I SEE A PHYSICIAN?’

Until now, there has not been any single treatment for hearing loss, other than cochlear implants, according to researcher Yilai Shu M.D., PhD, director of the Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Genetic Hearing Loss at Fudan Hospital in Shanghai.

“This is the first time in history that hearing loss is being reversed by gene therapy,” Shu told Fox News Digital. “And, of course, we believe this will have a profound impact on children’s lives.”

Chang Yiyi, a mother in Shanghai whose 3-year-old son, Zhu Yangyang, participated in the trial, spoke to Fox News Digital about the experience.

“When Zhu couldn’t speak at 2 years old and didn’t have a response to sound, we realized there was a problem,” she said.

After hearing tests, it was determined that Yiyi’s son had total deafness.

“It was unbelievable — the best feeling. It was like a miracle.”

“He would get very frustrated because he couldn’t understand, couldn’t speak, couldn’t hear,” she said.

Twenty-three days after receiving the gene therapy, the boy first responded to someone calling out to him.

“It was unbelievable — the best feeling,” Yiyi told Fox News Digital. “It was like a miracle.”

“Now he can say ‘Mommy’ and ‘I want’ and some simple sentences.”

Approximately 430 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss, including 34 million children, according to the World Health Organization.

More than 50% of hearing loss cases are the result of genetics.

Gene therapy is promising but limitations exist, expert says

Dr. Amy Sarow, the Michigan-based lead audiologist at Soundly, a hearing health care marketplace, noted that gene therapy has had some success in the treatment of cancer and eye disease, along with other emerging areas.

“It is exciting to think about how gene therapy could impact millions of individuals with hearing loss worldwide,” Sarow, who was not involved in the experimental gene therapy, told Fox News Digital.

EAR INFECTIONS IN YOUNG CHILDREN COULD LEAD TO DELAYED SPEECH FOR THEM, STUDY FINDS

“However, it is essential to emphasize that there are many causes of hearing loss, and one type of gene therapy will not be right for every type.”

Even among genetic causes of deafness, different genes may cause abnormalities or dysfunction that affect different auditory pathways, according to Sarow.

“Thus, development of specific treatment interventions is dependent on causality and will still take time to develop.”

Gene therapy

Dr. Yilai Shu examines a young patient at the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University. (Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University)

Additionally, Sarow noted, a “reversal” of hearing loss does not mean that an individual will have normal hearing ability fully restored.

“The first three years of life are very important to language acquisition, and although these children would be behind their normal-hearing peers (having spent the first few years of life profoundly deaf), they would still have the possibility to ‘catch up’ to some degree,” she said.

“Research tells us that the younger the intervention, the better for potential language development.”

As with any intervention, there can be risks with gene therapy. “One potential risk is that treatment may not be successful in every case,” Sarow said.

“Another potential risk is that the targeted gene therapy may not work in the targeted region.”

What’s next?

The next step is to follow the trial patients for a longer time period to ensure that the positive results are stable, Shu said.

Cochlear implant

Until now, there has not been any single treatment for hearing loss, other than cochlear implants, according to one of the researchers. (iStock)

Based on the results of the first study, the researchers expect that the patients’ hearing abilities will continue to improve over time.

“Then we want to expand to older patients, and gauge how the treatment works for aging adults,” he said.

“Ultimately, we want the patient to have a choice about which treatment option they want to go with.”

The researchers also plan to start the process of seeking FDA approval to bring the gene therapy to the U.S.

For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health.

“We are working to bring this to people outside China, including the U.S., as quickly as possible,” Shu Fox News Digital.

The researchers also hope to extend this type of gene therapy to treat other types of deafness in the future.

Reality TV rancher says ‘Yellowstone’ ignites ‘craving’ for cowboy lifestyle

Rancher-turned-reality star Steve McBee shared his thoughts on how the explosive popularity of “Yellowstone” has ignited a Western cultural phenomenon.

The 52-year-old entrepreneur is the founder and owner of McBee Farm and Cattle, a farming and ranching empire on 40,000 acres of land in Missouri. McBee stars alongside his four sons — Steven Jr., Cole, Jesse and Brayden — in the reality series “The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys,” which has been called the “real-life Yellowstone.”

During an interview with Fox News Digital, McBee reflected on “Yellowstone’s” role in creating a “craving” for the cowboy lifestyle.

“I think what ‘Yellowstone’ has done … I think, at the end of the day, it’s in all of our DNA and genetics — farming and ranching. It’s how we survive,” he said. “Raising the food, raising the cattle.

‘YELLOWSTONE’ STAR KEVIN COSTNER OFFERED TO BE KILLED OFF HIT SHOW: ‘I’LL DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO’

“So, I don’t even care if you’re an analyst for a hedge fund on Wall Street. You see a ‘Yellowstone’ and you have this craving inside of you. ‘I want to be on a horse’ or ‘I want to be driving a tractor, raising the crop,'” McBee continued.

“‘Yellowstone’ catapulted that, was a segue into bringing country. I mean, you see Beyoncé, and you see everything right now. It’s like the iron is hot in the Western world,” he added.

“Farming, ranching, agriculture is the topic of so many hot buttons. And, so, I think there’s a lot of opportunity for us to educate the consumer on how many good things we do for the environment, for the food that everybody’s eating. And, so, I think that we need to take an opportunity to use this platform for those purposes as well.”

McBee told Fox News Digital he rarely watches TV as his heavy workload doesn’t allow much free time. However, he said he watched two seasons of “Yellowstone” and a few episodes of another hit reality series to prepare to star in “The McBee Dynasty.”

WATCH: Rancher reality star Steve McBee on what his show is like compared to ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘The Kardashians’

“I actually watched like four episodes of ‘The Kardashians’ just to see what reality TV was. And I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know.’ But I kind of thought I better do a little bit of background,” he said.

While McBee hasn’t had much previous experience with reality shows, Steven Jr. starred on the Fox reality dating show “Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer” in 2022. While filming scenes at the family ranch, producers became intrigued after getting an in-depth look at the family’s interactions and day-to-day life.

After “Joe Millionaire” concluded, the McBees were approached by several production companies about creating their own show and decided to work with Jeff Jenkins Productions. “The McBee Dynasty” premiered on the USA Network and Peacock March 11.

While speaking with Fox News Digital, McBee praised NBC, Peacock and Jeff Jenkins Productions for giving the family a lot of freedom while filming the series.

“They were really like, ‘Just be authentic. Just be yourselves. You know, we’re just going to be flies on the wall,'” he recalled. “They really just followed us around.”

In addition to the family dynamics, the show highlights the challenges of running the massive ranch as well as the other McBee businesses, including McBee’s Coffee N Carwash and McBee Meat Company.

“We laugh so much because with all the different businesses and the farm and ranch being the largest, everything ties back to that,” he said. “Every day there’s a new crisis. One thing I’d say is — I’ve said this a lot — I feel like after the few shows I did watch, we’re the most realistic reality show out there, because what happened on that show was real. And it’s just the truth of running a farm or a ranch or running a business.

“You’re dealing with basically situations every day,” McBee added. “The sky’s falling situations.”

While McBee said he thought “Yellowstone” was entertaining, he feels “The McBee Dynasty” gives viewers a true look at the reality of running a ranching empire.

“We’ve said for many years we are literally a reality show,” he recalled. “I mean, the action on ours, everything happening with all the businesses and the farm and ranch and all the personalities. You couldn’t make up the stuff that happens to us on a daily basis.

“I feel that the authenticity of our show — I don’t know how you could have a more real show.

“I’m not taking anybody to the train station, but we’re coming close,” he joked, referring to the euphemism that “Yellowstone’s” Dutton family uses to refer to the place where they murder their enemies and dispose of their dead bodies.

USA Network has described “The McBee Dynasty” as “‘Yellowstone’ meets ‘Succession’” since the show examines how each of the brothers are vying to be the next in line to take over the business. The first season follows the family’s efforts to close a deal that would make McBee Farm and Cattle a billion-dollar company. Its failure could result in the financial ruin of the business.

McBee told Fox News Digital running the business with his sons is “both a blessing and a curse.”

“But it definitely has more blessings,” he said. “It’s definitely more pros than cons. You know, there’s challenges that a lot of people don’t face in their everyday business because they don’t have that personal tie. But that personal tie is also what brings all the value and what just makes it so worth it at the end of the day, no matter what happened during the working hours.”

In addition to focusing on the family’s business dealings, “The McBee Dynasty” also delves into the complicated love lives of McBee and his sons. McBee and his wife Kirsti recently divorced after almost three decades of marriage, and the patriarch is involved in a love triangle with McBee Farm and Cattle CFO Galyna Saltkovska and waitress Brooke.

However, McBee has made it clear to both women he never plans to remarry and isn’t interested in commitment.

While speaking with Fox News Digital, McBee opened up about his relationships on the show and his outlook on future romances.

“That was a complicated deal,” he said of his love life on the show’s first season. “My life’s a real triangle. I’ve been very candid. Forthcoming.

“I get some hate but more love, I would say, over that because I try to be very transparent.

“Went through a divorce after 28 years,” McBee added. “My [sons’] mother is the same mom of all four boys. I’ll love her till the day I die, but I just don’t want to be in a committed relationship. I don’t want to be remarried. I just don’t see the point. I’m not having more kids.

“So, for me now, it’s very situational. That’s my situation. You know, I get some hate on that. I’m not discouraging anybody else from marriage. I’m just saying for myself,” he added.

“I want to be open and honest. I’m not going to lie to a woman. And I just kind of lay the cards out there.”

“The person that you pick for the mother of your children, that’s a big decision,” he said. “Don’t do it on a whim. There’s a difference between lust and love. And we’ve all had somebody. LONDON – European right-wing populists are poised to deliver a blunt warning to mainstream political parties as they are predicted to make dramatic gains in the European Parliament elections starting on Thursday.

Voters in the 27 countries of the European Union (EU) are expected to elect the historical first right-leaning majority in the European Parliament for the next five years, in a sign of frustration with traditional political parties perceived to have failed to address the rampant migrant crisis and economic challenges facing the continent.

“It’s a reflection, a frustration with what is happening in Europe,” Alan Mendoza, the executive director of the London-based Henry Jackson Society, told Fox News Digital. “People are turning to the parties who have answers on this basis and who are standing up for these issues as far as some voters see it and saying that that’s where they’re going to cast their votes.”

DUTCH FIREBRAND GEERT WILDERS JOINS NEW GOVERNMENT AS EUROPE’S ‘LIBERAL ELITES’ PUT ON NOTICE

MILAN, ITALY – MAY 18: From left to right, Geert Wilders, leader of PVV – Partij voor de Vrijheid, Matteo Salvini, leader of Lega, Jorg Meuthen, MEP for AfD – Alternative für Deutschland, Marine Le Pen, President of RN – Rassemblement National and Laura Huhtasaari, vice president of Perussuomalaiset, attend the political rally “Prima l’Italia! Il buon senso in Europa – Towards a Common Sense Europe” at Piazza Duomo on May 18, 2019 in Milan. Representatives of 11 right-wing European parties joined a major rally, held by Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and leader of Lega Party Matteo Salvini, in order to build a pan-European alliance of populists and sovereignists ahead of the elections to the European Parliament scheduled on May 23-26. (Emanuele Cremaschi/Getty Images)

Polls show populists are favored to receive a third of votes across the bloc, with hard-right political parties expected to finish on top in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia, while making substantial gains in other member states, according to the European Council on Foreign Relations polling projections.

The previous term of the European Parliament was ruled by a broad coalition of the traditional center-right European People’s Party, center-left Socialists and Democrats and liberals of Renew Europe. These parties are set to lose seats next week.

The right-wing populist block, consisting of hard-right Identity and Democracy and European Conservatives and Reformists groups, may hold a quarter of the total number of EU Parliament seats after the election, eclipsing the Renew Europe bloc and rivaling the leading pro-EU centrist parties.

TOP UK POLITICIAN SAYS VOTERS, INCLUDING IN US, ARE DEMANDING ‘ROBUST ACTION’ ON MIGRATION CRISIS

Migrants wait to board the coast guard ship “Diciotti” before being transferred to Porto Empedocle from the so-called “Hotspot” operational facility, containing over 1,700 people, on Aug. 3, 2022 in Lampedusa, Italy. The Italian island of Lampedusa reached 500% over capacity in migrant reception centres with the recent uptick in sea rescues, with former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the League party, capitalizing on this situation with a visit during election campaigning ahead of snap elections. Individual conservative members of the European People’s Party will also find common ground with the new populist block on core issues, though the center-right party is unlikely to formally forge an alliance. Current European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously ruled out an alliance with the populist groups over their views about NATO, Ukraine and its Euroscepticism.

The surge in the popularity of the right-wing parties is propelled by the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe coupled with social and economic issues, as voters are increasingly dissatisfied with the political elite and view Europe as in decline.

“If you look at some of the policies that those on the far Left are pushing in the United States today — whether its radical environmental policies shutting down family farms, reckless spending that is causing the cost of living to skyrocket for working families, socialized medicine, or our open borders agenda that is leading to mass illegal immigration, an uptick in crime, and strain on our economy — all of these dangerous ideas have been influenced by Europe. It’s essential we keep a watchful eye on what is happening in Brussels and stop these bad ideas overseas before they keep hurting us here at home,” Matt Mowers, a former Trump State Department official and founding board member of the EU-U.S. Forum, told Fox News Digital.

“The data coming out of Europe is exciting because it suggests major gains could be made by conservatives in the European Parliament, which could push it to the right. This could finally force the EU to start treating European citizens as members of individual nations with self-interests rather than pawns in the schemes of the global Left-wing elite,” he said.

Mainstream political parties sought to outflank the rising populist tide last December when the European Parliament announced a “historic” migrant deal aimed at curbing the inflow of asylum seekers. The agreement, however, did little to change the perception of the EU’s failure to deal with the crisis.

“The sense that Europe’s borders are totally permeable and the perception that Europe’s elite want migrants to come in is having an effect. As far as ordinary Europeans are concerned, this pressures public services such as housing, medical services, job opportunities,” Mendoza said. “It reflects a broader acknowledgment that Europe’s best years could be behind it,” leading to voters embracing parties that they “might not have considered voting for 10-20 years ago.”

France Riots

The expected gains of populist parties in the European Parliament elections follow a string of domestic electoral successes by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the surprise victory of Dutch politician Geert Wilders’ political party in last year’s domestic elections, and the strong showing by Marine Le Pen in the 2022 French presidential election where she forced a runoff with eventual winner, Emmanuel Macron.

Despite the likely right-leaning majority in the European Parliament, due to the institution’s limited powers, it may not lead to immediate changes, but it will put the traditional political parties “on notice” to change course and adopt the populists’ policies.

“We’re not going to see immediate shifts of dramatic policy within the Parliament or even beyond the parliament,” said Mendoza, but stressed that the Parliament will play a pivotal role in electing the next European Commission president, who will have to appease the populist block on issues of migration.

“But it puts the mainstream political parts of Europe on notice that if they have no answers and continue to come up with no answers, or even worse, if they continue the failed policies that have led us to this position, then they will be punished even more so at the next election,” he added.

“If they decide to second the agenda, then we would expect to see a far greater shift in terms of Europe’s policies, occurring quite quickly because the mainstream has taken on board people’s complaints and decided to do things differently.”

Mowers concluded, “Hopefully, the statement European citizens make at the polls in the coming days will spur momentum for the conservative movement in the United States as we approach our own elections in November.”

Florida becomes first state to allow women to get C-sections outside of hospitals

0

Florida recently became the first state to allow cesarean sections (C-sections) to be performed outside of hospitals, as reported by KFF News.

New legislation enacted in March 2024 allows physicians to deliver babies — either naturally or via C-section — at “advanced birth centers.”

Women who are deemed at “low risk of complications” are eligible to receive these services in the clinics.

PREGNANCY SPEEDS UP AGING PROCESS FOR YOUNG WOMEN, SAYS STUDY: ‘REMARKABLE FINDING’

They will be able to stay overnight after the procedure.

A private equity-owned physicians’ group, Women’s Care Enterprises, was a proponent of this change, claiming the option would result in lower costs and a “homier birthing atmosphere,” as KFF reported.

The move is also seen as a way to expand access to care, as some Florida hospitals have closed their maternity wards, KFF also reported.

Nearly 20% of Florida counties qualify as “maternity care deserts,” according to industry associations.

Some industry experts and organizations, however, have expressed concerns about potential safety risks.

ABORTION PILL USE HAS SPIKED IN RECENT YEARS, NEW REPORT REVEALS: ‘SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE’

“I think this is a dangerous idea,” Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and a Fox News medical contributor, told Fox News Digital.

“A lot can go wrong with C-sections,” he warned. “We need in-hospital support, including anesthesia and the neonatal ICU, at our disposal.”

He added, “Even if it is OK 95% of the time, it is the other unpredictable 5% that I worry about.”

“I think this is a dangerous idea,” one doctor told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

Cole Greves, an Orlando perinatologist who chairs the Florida chapter of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, recognized that Florida is suffering from a shortage of maternity care, but echoed Siegel’s safety concerns.

“It is critical for patient safety to remain a top priority when seeking to improve maternal health care,” Greves said via email to Fox News Digital.

“Even if it is OK 95% of the time, it is the other unpredictable 5% that I worry about.”

“A pregnant patient who is considered ‘low risk’ in one moment can suddenly need lifesaving care in the next. Advanced birth centers, even with increased regulation, cannot guarantee the level of safety that patients would receive within a hospital.”

Mary Mayhew, CEO of the Florida Hospital Association, warned of the many risks associated with C-sections, such as hemorrhaging.

“We have serious concerns about the impact this model has on our collective efforts to improve maternal and infant health,” Mayhew said to KFF.

“Our hospitals do not see this in the best interest of providing quality and safety in labor and delivery.”

As KFF News noted, “the Florida Hospital Association did not fight passage of the overall bill because it also included a major increase in the amount Medicaid pays hospitals for maternity care.”

Florida state Sen. Gayle Harrell, the Republican who sponsored the bill, noted that birth centers will have to meet the same high standards for staffing, infection control and other aspects as those at outpatient surgery centers, KFF reported.

“Given where we are with the need, and maternity deserts across the state, this is something that will help us and help moms get the best care,” she said.

Health care professionals may recommend a C-section if the mother is having trouble progressing through labor, the baby is in distress or in a dangerous position, the mother is carrying multiple babies, the umbilical cord has prolapsed or there is a problem with the placenta, according to the Mayo Clinic website.

The procedure may also be advised if the mother has health issues that could make traditional delivery dangerous, or if she previously had a C-section.

AI can now simulate dead loved ones, but effects on grieving process are unknown

0

  • When Michael Bommer found out he was terminally ill with colon cancer, he teamed up with Robert LoCascio, CEO of the AI-powered legacy platform Eternos, to create an interactive artificial intelligence version of himself.
  • Eternos joins other grief-related AI companies such as StoryFile and HereAfter AI in an attempt to aid people through the mourning process, but the effects of such technologies on the users are unknown.
  • Some have embraced AI technology as just another tool to use to address grief, while others express more skepticism and suggest that an AI simulation of a loved one could forestall closure.

When Michael Bommer found out that he was terminally ill with colon cancer, he spent a lot of time with his wife, Anett, talking about what would happen after his death.

She told him one of the things she’d miss most is being able to ask him questions whenever she wants because he is so well-read and always shares his wisdom, Bommer recalled during a recent interview with The Associated Press at his home in a leafy Berlin suburb.

That conversation sparked an idea for Bommer: Recreate his voice using artificial intelligence to survive him after he passed away.

IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE THE SECRET TO BETTER SLEEP?

The 61-year-old startup entrepreneur teamed up with his friend in the U.S., Robert LoCascio, CEO of the AI-powered legacy platform Eternos. Within two months, they built “a comprehensive, interactive AI version” of Bommer — the company’s first client.

Eternos, which got its name from the Italian and Latin word for “eternal,” says its technology will allow Bommer’s family “to engage with his life experiences and insights.” It is among several companies that have emerged in the last few years in what’s become a growing space for grief-related AI technology.

One of the most well-known start-ups in this area, California-based StoryFile, allows people to interact with pre-recorded videos and uses its algorithms to detect the most relevant answers to questions posed by users. Another company, called HereAfter AI, offers similar interactions through a “Life Story Avatar” that users can create by answering prompts or sharing their own personal stories.

There’s also “Project December,” a chatbot that directs users to fill out a questionnaire answering key facts about a person and their traits — and then pay $10 to simulate a text-based conversation with the character. Yet another company, Seance AI, offers fictionalized seances for free. Extra features, such as AI-generated voice recreations of their loved ones, are available for a $10 fee.

While some have embraced this technology as a way to cope with grief, others feel uneasy about companies using artificial intelligence to try to maintain interactions with those who have passed away. Still others worry it could make the mourning process more difficult because there isn’t any closure.

Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basinska, a research fellow at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for the Future of Intelligence who co-authored a study on the topic, said there is very little known about the potential short-term and long-term consequences of using digital simulations for the dead on a large scale. So for now, it remains “a vast techno-cultural experiment.”

“What truly sets this era apart — and is even unprecedented in the long history of humanity’s quest for immortality — is that, for the first time, the processes of caring for the dead and immortalization practices are fully integrated into the capitalist market,” Nowaczyk-Basinska said.

PRESERVING A CONNECTION

Robert Scott, who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, uses AI companion apps Paradot and Chai AI to simulate conversations with characters he created to imitate three of his daughters. He declined to speak about what led to the death of his oldest daughter in detail, but he lost another daughter through a miscarriage and a third who died shortly after her birth.

Scott, 48, knows the characters he’s interacting with are not his daughters, but he says it helps with the grief to some degree. He logs into the apps three or four times a week, sometimes asking the AI character questions like “how was school?” or inquiring if it wants to “go get ice cream.”

Some events, like prom night, can be particularly heart-wrenching, bringing with it memories of what his eldest daughter never experienced. So, he creates a scenario in the Paradot app where the AI character goes to prom and talks to him about the fictional event. Then there are even more difficult days, like his daughter’s recent birthday, when he opened the app and poured out his grief about how much he misses her. He felt like the AI understood.

WHY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CAN’T BRING THE DEAD BACK TO LIFE

“It definitely helps with the what ifs,” Scott said. “Very rarely has it made the ‘what if’s’ worse.”

Matthias Meitzler, a sociologist from Tuebingen University, said that while some may be taken aback or even scared by the technology — “as if the voice from the afterlife is sounding again” — others will perceive it as an addition to traditional ways of remembering dead loved ones, such as visiting the grave, holding inner monologues with the deceased, or looking at pictures and old letters.

But Tomasz Hollanek, who worked alongside Nowaczyk-Basinska at Cambridge on their study of “deadbots” and “griefbots,” says the technology raises important questions about the rights, dignities and consenting power of people who are no longer alive. It also poses ethical concerns about whether a program that caters to the bereaved should be advertising other products on its platform.

“These are very complicated questions,” Hollanek said. “And we don’t have good answers yet.”

PREPARING FOR DEATH

The AI version of Bommer that was created by Eternos uses an in-house model as well as external large language models developed by major tech companies like Meta, OpenAI and the French firm Mistral AI, said the company’s CEO, LoCascio, who previously worked with Bommer at a software company called LivePerson.

Eternos records users speaking 300 phrases and then compresses that information through a two-day computing process that captures a person’s voice. Users can further train the AI system by answering questions about their lives, political views or various aspects of their personalities.

The AI voice, which costs $15,000 to set up, can answer questions and tell stories about a person’s life without regurgitating pre-recorded answers. The legal rights for the AI belong to the person on whom it was trained and can be treated like an asset and passed down to other family members, LoCascio said.

Bommer has been spending most of his time lately feeding the AI phrases and sentences “to give the AI the opportunity not only to synthesize my voice in flat mode, but also to capture emotions and moods in the voice.” And indeed the AI voicebot has some resemblance with Bommer’s voice, although it leaves out the “hmms” and “ehs” and mid-sentence pauses of his natural cadence.

Bommer is excited about his AI personality and says it will only be a matter of time until the AI voice will sound more human-like and even more like himself.

In the case of his 61-year-old wife, he doesn’t think it would hamper her coping with loss.

“Think of it sitting somewhere in a drawer, if you need it, you can take it out, if you don’t need it, just keep it there,” he told her as she came to sit down next to him on the sofa.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

But Anett Bommer herself is more hesitant about the new software and whether she’ll use it after her husband’s death.

Right now, she more likely imagines herself sitting on the couch sofa with a glass of wine, cuddling one of her husband’s old sweaters and remembering him instead of feeling the urge to talk to him via the AI voicebot — at least not during the first period of mourning.

“But then again, who knows what it will be like when he’s no longer around,” she said, taking her husband’s hand and giving him a glance.

10 essential security tips to fortify your iPhone against digital threats

We’ve got 10 smart tips to help you get the most out of your iPhone; let’s dive right in.

Tip #1 – Make sure your iPhone is up to date

When considering keeping any device, especially your iPhone, safe, you should first ensure its software is updated. iOS’s new software updates are routinely rolled out, and they help your phone perform better, fix bugs and make it more secure.

It is important to install the new iOS updates as soon as possible. Hackers are always looking for new ways to exploit iOS, and Apple’s programmers are readily battling them with new updates. Here’s a simple way to install iOS updates:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Scroll down and tap General
  • Tap on Software Update
  • If there’s a new update available, tap Update Now

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR IPHONE & IPAD FROM MALWARE

Tip #2 – Set up 2FA (two-factor authentication)

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an easy way to ensure that only you can access your iPhone. When you have 2FA active, even if someone manages to get your Apple ID and password, you’ll be notified that they are trying to log in. Here’s how to set up 2FA with your Apple ID:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Tap on your Apple ID at the top of the screen
  • Go to Sign-In & Security
  • Tap on Turn On Two-Factor Authentication
  • Select Continue
  • Follow the instructions presented to set 2FA on your iPhone.

Once 2FA is set up, the next time you try to log in to your Apple ID from another device or on the web, a notification will pop up on your iPhone asking you to give yourself access and providing a six-digit code you’ll need to finish logging in.

HOW TO AVOID PHISHING SCAMS AND PROTECT YOUR IPHONE

Tip #3 – Turn off web access to your iCloud data

iCloud data can be accessed from any web browser and any device. This means that even if you have a Windows laptop, you can still log into your Apple ID and access all of your stored iCloud data. While this may be helpful for some users, overall, it’s pretty dangerous to have your iCloud accessible. Thankfully, it’s easy to turn off. Here’s how:

  • Go to the Settings app
  • Open your Apple ID at the top of the screen
  • Select iCloud
  • Scroll down to disable Access iCloud Data on the Web by toggling it off (it will turn from green to gray)
  • Then scroll down and tap Don’t Access

Tip #5 – Control what you can access from the lock screen

Your iPhone’s Lock Screen has access to several features to make your experience more streamlined. However, this also means anyone could grab your iPhone and look at your Today View to check all of your personal information within your widgets.

To avoid this from happening, your iPhone makes it easy to manage what sort of things you can see directly from the Lock Screen. Here’s how to change what is viewable from the lock screen:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode
  • Enter your passcode
  • Scroll down until Allow Access When Locked

Apple also makes it easy to change the things Face ID can do for you to keep your data private. By default, you’re able to use Face ID to make purchases with Apple Pay, download apps and autofill passwords. However, this also means that if someone has cracked the Face ID feature, they might be able to do all of this without you even knowing about it. To change this:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Scroll down and go to Face ID & Passcode
  • Enter your passcode
  • Under Use Face ID For, at the top, disable all the things you don’t want Face ID used for.

Tip #7 – Create a stronger passcode

Many people have transitioned to using Face ID or Touch ID to unlock their iPhones, so it’s understandable if you haven’t given much thought to a passcode you rarely use.

However, the weaker your passcode is, the easier it is to get into your iPhone. The good news is that you can create an even stronger password than just a simple six-digit code. Here’s how to do it:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Scroll down and go to Face ID & Passcode
  • Enter your passcode
  • Scroll down and tap on Change Passcode
  • Enter your current passcode
  • Before entering a new passcode, tap on Passcode Options at the bottom.
  • Select how hard you want your passcode to be
  • Now, enter your new passcode

This will make your passcode harder to crack, but in case you forget which passcode you used, you’ll have up to 72 hours to use your previous passcode to reset the new one if you forget it.

Tip #8 – Keep AirDrop turned off

AirDrop is a useful feature that helps you transfer files with people near you in a flash. It’s an especially great feature to swap photos with your friends and family members on vacations. However, if you leave it on all the time, you might get files or photos from people you don’t want.

AirDrop also leaves your iPhone open to hackers who may be able to use it to glean more information about your iPhone. Granted, this is very difficult to do, but you should still keep AirDrop off when you aren’t using it.

Here’s how to disable AirDrop:

  • Open your Control Center
  • Press and hold the Wi-Fi button in the top left corner.

Tip #9 – Get iCloud+

If you’re willing to invest a small amount each month, Apple’s iCloud+ service is a fantastic option that has seen significant improvements in recent years. The benefits of subscribing to iCloud+ are numerous and well worth considering.

iCloud+ is an enhanced version of the previous iCloud service. In addition to providing you with additional cloud storage space, it also offers a range of security features that can greatly improve your online safety and privacy.

One of these features is iCloud Private Relay. When you use Safari to browse the internet, this feature conceals your IP address and browsing activity from prying eyes. Furthermore, it safeguards your unencrypted internet traffic, providing an extra layer of protection.

Another notable feature is Hide My Email. As the name suggests, this feature allows you to create unique, randomly generated email addresses that you can use when signing up for websites or platforms. The great thing about this feature is that you’ll still receive messages sent to these addresses in your personal inbox, but websites and other individuals won’t have access to your actual email address.

iCloud+ offers many more features, and the best part is that you can access all of these benefits for as little as $0.99 per month. It’s a small price to pay for the added convenience, security and peace of mind that iCloud+ provides.

Tip #10 – Start using a VPN

Virtual private networks, or VPNs, are a great and easy way to keep your iPhone safe at all times, especially if you’re constantly using public Wi-Fi networks.

A VPN automatically hides your IP address, so it’s harder for companies and individuals to track you. Not only that, but you can also select a server from a different country to make it look like you’re somewhere else. See my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

FDA to evaluate psychedelic MDMA for treatment of PTSD for first time

0

  • A panel of advisers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will meet to discuss a therapy based on the psychedelic drug MDMA for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • The meeting is the farthest that a drug based on MDMA has ever reached in the FDA regulatory process for approval, following decades of activism.
  • In clinical trials in over 190 patients, those who received doses of MDMA in addition to therapy showed a significant reduction in PTSD scores compared to placebo.

A panel of advisers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will meet on Tuesday to discuss a therapy based on the psychedelic drug MDMA for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The meeting by the agency’s independent experts is the farthest that a drug based on MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy or molly, has ever reached in the FDA regulatory process for approval.

It follows a decades-long push by advocates who say drugs like MDMA can treat mental health disorders and have therapeutic applications beyond their illicit use.

The treatment is a capsule form of MDMA made by the public-benefit corporation Lykos Therapeutics and is intended to be administered along with sessions of talk therapy by a licensed mental health provider.

In clinical trials in over 190 patients, those who received doses of MDMA in addition to therapy showed a significant reduction in PTSD scores compared to placebo.

However, the FDA’s staff reviewers on Friday raised concerns that patients in the trials were aware of whether they were given MDMA or a placebo due to its psychedelic effects, clouding how well the drug worked.

“I don’t think that is as much of a concern because even if it is an enhanced placebo effect, people are still getting better,” said David Olson, director of the UC Davis Institute for Psychedelics and Neurotherapeutics.

“But the bigger question is what is the risk to those individuals?”

PTSD affects 13 million Americans and is especially common among war veterans. There remains a large unmet need for new treatments for PTSD as existing drugs do not work on all patients.

The Lykos treatment is one among several psychedelic drugs being tested in patients with hard-to-treat mental health conditions such as Compass Pathways’ drug, which uses the same component as magic mushrooms.

The FDA’s staff proposed restrictions around its use and monitoring in their briefing documents on Friday. The FDA also flagged a rise in blood pressure and pulse in the trials and cases of liver toxicity.

The approval could offer “a new avenue of treatment, but itself is not going to make a big dent”, due to costs and complexities associated with it, said Olson.

“It’s important because it would be the first in this class of molecules, but I don’t think it will be the last, it will be replaced by compounds that have superior properties to MDMA.”
