Rock Hudson’s wife secretly recorded gay confession for private investigator, book claims

Rock Hudson’s wife had no qualms playing the role of a Hollywood wife – until her closeted husband came swinging with a divorce.

While it is known today that the 1950s heartthrob was gay, Universal Studios went to great lengths to protect his image, including keeping his sexuality a secret. Hudson was married to talent agency secretary Phyllis Gates from 1955 to 1958.

“During the marriage, she kept quiet,” author Josh Young told Fox News Digital. “But it obviously affected her life. And in the end, when it was clear that he was going to leave her with nothing, I think that’s when she felt she needed to do something.”

Young recently teamed up with Manfred Westphal to write “The Fixer: Moguls, Mobsters, Movie Stars and Marilyn.” It delves into shocking revelations from notorious private detective Fred Otash based on his never-before-seen investigative files.

For the book, Westphal was given access to Otash’s archives with the blessing of his daughter, Colleen. Westphal, who first met Colleen at Otash’s funeral, developed a close friendship with her over the years.

Otash, a World War II Marine veteran, died in 1992 at age 70.

“Fred Otash fought to get Phyllis Gates what she deserved in their divorce settlement when Rock was kicking her to the curb and refusing to support her,” Young explained. “It was surprising to learn what an advocate he was for women and how interesting those cases were.”

According to the authors, Otash was the son of Lebanese rug merchants whose life was marked by tragedy.

He lost his father and only brother during the Great Depression, prompting him to drop out of high school at age 16 to join the Civil Conservation Corps to support his mother and sisters. He went on to volunteer for the Marine Corps and, at the outset of World War II, fought in the South Pacific.

Otash landed in Los Angeles in 1945, when he signed up for the LAPD. There, he made a name for himself as a renegade officer before launching his own detective bureau in 1955, which, thanks to his access to emerging technology, eclipsed his contemporaries. He served as a freelancer for the Los Angeles tabloid, Confidential.

“There were a lot of tabloid rumors about Rock Hudson at the time,” said Young. “Fred was a fact-checker for Confidential, which was the nastier version of the Enquirer, the precursor to that. It was a magazine that didn’t play ball with the Hollywood studios and would run whatever story they could get their hands on.”

“Early on, they had a lot of stories about Rock Hudson and his relationships – his homosexual relationships,” Young shared. “A lot of those stories were traded out and killed by Rock’s manager in exchange for other tabloid stories.”

According to the book, Gates was a “wholesome farm girl and former Sunday school teacher” from Minnesota who was set up with Hudson. Hollywood agent Henry Willson, who “had already bearded his own homosexuality by becoming engaged to President Harry Truman’s songstress daughter,” ensured that the couple was photographed all around town.

In 1955, Confidential was ready to strike with an in-depth story of Hudson’s sexuality based on first-person accounts by his former lovers. Willson, fearing the tell-all would destroy Hudson’s career, cut a deal by throwing two of his other less lucrative talents under the bus.

Still, magazines wondered when “Hollywood’s most handsome bachelor” would get married. Willson gave Hudson two months to get hitched.

Gates happily obliged when Hudson asked her to move in with him. Two months later, she said I do. A quickie “PR stunt wedding” was orchestrated by Willson with Hollywood’s “gossip queens” in attendance.

All seemed well as Hudson skyrocketed to fame. However, his lovers reportedly kept him occupied when the cameras stopped rolling. Gates, who had grown tired of “her estranged husband’s disregard for her physical and emotional needs,” hired Hollywood lawyer Jerry Giesler to commence divorce proceedings. According to the book, Gates later became “shaken” to learn that her marriage “was nothing more than a fanciful farce” to cover up Hudson’s sexuality.

The book noted that Hudson was willing to grant Gates a divorce. However, he would only offer “a few measly bucks, her car and no place to live.” Gates fired Giesler and brought on personal attorney Arthur Crowley, who then reached out to Otash to find any evidence of Hudson’s homosexuality. Crowley planned to threaten that he would leak the news to the press if Gates was not financially supported.

“She was put in the position of not being able to fend for herself,” said Young. “It was the case for a lot of women in those days who were dealing with powerful people in various circumstances. That wouldn’t happen today, but it did happen in the 1950s.”

According to the book, Otash set up a sting operation. He created a script for Gates, which she used to confront Hudson. The actor was secretly recorded by Otash, the book claimed.

During the sit-down, Gates confronted Hudson about a Rorschach test he had taken.

“You told me you saw thousands of butterflies and also snakes,” said Gates. “[A therapist] told me in my analysis that butterflies mean femininity and snakes represent the male penis. I’m not condemning you, but it seems that as long as you recognize your problem, you would want to do something about it.”

Gates also pointed out, “Your great speed with me, sexually. Are you that fast with boys?”

“Everyone knows that you were picking up boys off the street shortly after we were married and have continued to do so, thinking that being married would cover up for you,” she further accused Hudson.

“I have never picked up any boys on the street,” Hudson shot back. “I have never picked up any boys in a bar, never. I have never picked up any boys, other than to give them a ride.”

At one point, Hudson broke down to Gates, the book claimed.

“I never felt we were together on anything,” Hudson tearfully said to his estranged wife. “I never felt you loved me.”

“And that is why you never touched me?” Gates replied. “Rock, when we came back from our honeymoon you never made love to me for one whole month. I was always here, and I always wanted you. At first, I would come to bed, and you would have a book in your face… People sense these things… A man has to have a sexual outlet. You should have picked me up and carried me into bed, but you never touched me.”

Hudson allegedly told Gates that he had a homosexual affair “the next day” after they were married.

“I was just a doormat to you,” said Gates. “Someone to hide behind.”

According to the book, Otash and Crowley used the transcript to pressure Hudson’s team into a settlement. Hudson gave Gates their Hollywood Hills home and $250 a week for 10 years if she did not remarry, which would come to $130,000, or $1.3 million today. She was also given stock in his production company.

Neither remarried. Hudson died of complications from AIDS in 1985 at age 59.

“I had the power to destroy Rock and I didn’t use it,” Gates later wrote, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times. “To have exposed his other life would have been vicious and vindictive. I faced enough trouble rebuilding my life without bearing that guilt.”

Before she died in 2006 at age 80, Gates told Hudson’s biographer Sara Davidson that she “was very much in love” with the actor.

“I thought he would be a wonderful husband,” said Gates, as quoted by People magazine. “He was charming, his career was red-hot, he was gorgeous. How many women would have said no?”

What does it mean to “safelist” an email address?

To “safelist,” an email address means adding it to a special list where you mark it as trusted. When you safelist an email address, you ensure that messages from this sender go directly to your inbox instead of getting caught in spam filters. This is particularly useful because sometimes important emails can be mistakenly marked as unwanted spam.

Safelisting is a helpful tool, especially in settings where you can’t afford to miss important messages, like in business or personal communications. By adding an email address to your safelist, you’re telling your email service that you know and trust this sender and that the sender’s emails are important to you. This step helps ensure that you always receive the emails you need, including our CyberGuy newsletter.

Part I: How to safelist email addresses in different email platforms

To ensure that important emails always reach your inbox and don’t get lost in the spam folder, it’s a good idea to safelist trusted email addresses. This requires adding contacts to your email platform’s address book and taking another step to ensure they go to you. 

Here’s how to do it on different email platforms:

Gmail:

Add email addresses to contacts:

  • Go to Google Contacts (contacts.google.com).
  • Click on “Create contact” and fill out the “Create a contact” form with the email address you wish to safelist.
  • Click Save. This automatically ensures that emails from this address land in your inbox rather than your spam folder.

Safelist spam emails:

  • Navigate to your Gmail inbox.
  • From the navigation bar on the left, scroll down and click More.
  • Then, click Spam
  • Find the email from the sender you want to safelist. Click the empty box to the left of the Spam email you want to remove from Spam.
  • Now, tap Not spam 

Create a non-spam filter:

  • From your Gmail inbox, go to “Settings” (gear icon), then “See all settings.”
  • Navigate to “Filters and Blocked Addresses” and click it.
  • Then, tap “Create a new filter.”
  • Enter the email address or domain you wish to safelist in the “From” field.
  • Click “Create filter” with this search, check “Never send it to Spam,” and then click “Create filter.”

Yahoo Mail:

Add a Yahoo contact:

  • Click the Contacts card icon on the upper right corner of your inbox.
  • Then, click the three horizontal dots just below it on the right
  • Select “Add a new Contact.”
  • Fill out the form with the sender’s details, and click “Save.”

Add a filter in Yahoo Mail:

  • Click the Gear icon in the upper right corner and select “More Settings.”
  • Choose “Filters” from the left navigation menu
  • Then click “Add new filters.”
  • Fill out the form with a filter name and the email address or domain you wish to safelist.
  • Click “Save” to activate the filter.

AOL Mail:

Add an AOL contact:

  • Log into your AOL Mail account
  • Click on Contacts in the left navigation menu
  • Tap on the three horizontal dots under where it says Contacts
  • Click on Add a new Contact
  • Fill out the contact details, and click Save

Create a filter in AOL Mail:

  • Log into your AOL Mail account
  • Click on Options
  • Then, click Mail Settings
  • Under Filter Settings, click on Create a new filter
  • Enter a name for the filter, specify the condition (e.g., emails from a specific email address), and set the action to Move to inbox
  • Save the filter to ensure all future emails from this address go directly to your inbox instead of the spam folder.

StartMail

  • Log in to your StartMail account: Start by signing in to your StartMail account.
  • Access your settings: Look for a settings or options menu, typically found in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Navigate to Safelist options: Within the settings menu, find the section dedicated to ‘Filters’ or ‘Safelisting’.
  • Add the email address: In the safelist section, there should be an option to ‘Add’ or ‘Create a new rule’. Enter the email address you wish to safelist.
  • Save your changes: Make sure to save or apply the changes to update your safelist settings.

By following these steps, emails from safelisted addresses bypass the spam filter, ensuring you receive important communications directly in your inbox.

If you plan to safelist email addresses so that you won’t miss another email from a trusted address by it going into your spam folder instead of your primary inbox, you might be wondering how this works the other way around. How do emails you DON’T want to see get into your inbox when those should be going into your spam folder?

If you’re getting a lot of “promotional” or “spam” emails (depending on how your email labels them), it’s likely because you subscribed to them at some point in time. To find out where you’re subscribed and unsubscribe from many places at once, there are services out there like Clean Email that can help you do this quickly. But you can also do it the manual way by setting time aside to go through your inbox and unsubscribe to ones you don’t want anymore as they come into your inbox.

It could also be because your email is out there on the internet, and scammers (as well as companies) can find it and add it to a mailing list without you giving explicit permission to do so. To help minimize this, there are ways to get your data offline.

Use aliases to protect yourself from spam emails

Sometimes, it’s best to create various email aliases so that you don’t have to worry about all your info getting stolen in a data breach. An email alias address is also a great way to stop receiving constant spam mail by simply deleting it. 

My top recommendation to avoid being inundated with spam emails is to use an alias email address. An alias email address is an additional email address that can be used to receive emails in the same mailbox as the primary email address. It acts as a forwarding address, directing emails to the primary email address.

In addition to creating throwaway email accounts for online sign-ups and other circumstances where you would not want to disclose your primary email address, alias email addresses are helpful for handling and organizing incoming communications.

Sometimes, it’s best to create various email aliases so that you don’t have to worry about getting tons of spam mail and having your email eventually stolen in a data breach. How to access your saved passwords

To have websites or apps remember your passwords on an iPhone, you can use the built-in password manager. Here are the steps:

  • Go to the Settings app on your iPhone
  • Scroll down and tap on Passwords
  • You may be prompted to use Face ID, Touch ID, or enter your passcode
  • To see a list of saved passwords, simply scroll down and select a website or app from the list
  • Then click on Password, and the password will be displayed
  • You can also ask Siri to show your passwords by saying, “Show my passwords,” or ask for a specific one, like, “What is my Hulu password?”

Insiders predict this ‘powerhouse’ Republican would bring major boost as Trump VP pick

A potential name on former President Trump’s running mate shortlist is being described by political insiders as a “powerhouse” that could bring a major boost to his chances at retaking the White House.

The horse race among those hoping to be named Trump’s running mate continued this week with the names widely believed to be on the shortlist making the rounds on various media outlets and at public events to praise the former president, including House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik of New York, who some say has a certain “attractiveness” for the role.

“Stefanik’s position as the fourth-ranking member of the House leadership provides valuable insight into navigating Capitol Hill, which Trump is not known for loving. Historically, Capitol Hill has served as a fertile ground for VP candidates,” Republican strategist Erine Perrine told Fox News Digital.

Perrine praised Stefanik as “a prolific fundraiser,” which she said could strengthen the campaign’s financial standing heading into the final stretch of the race, and argued her loyalty to the former president would help ensure cohesion among Republicans.

“Stefanik’s presence also mitigates Democratic attacks on women’s issues,” she said, alluding to Democrats’ attempts to make abortion a major factor in the race. “Her selection would bring a youthful and dynamic image for the Republican Party to help bolster the ticket.”

“Stefanik built a reputation as a powerhouse in committee hearings, most recently highlighted by her questioning of university presidents. These strengths enhance her credibility and effectiveness as a campaigner,” she added.

Republican strategist David Polyansky agreed, noting Stefanik, during her time in House leadership, has driven a number of critical fights, and did so despite the turmoil surrounding the role of House speaker.

“She’s done a very effective job at elevating her profile, which is hard to do, not just from the House, but even from a House leadership standpoint,” he said. “I think she’d be attractive to some of the large donor blocks who may be tentative in terms of how much money they invest.”

“Having a female vice presidential pick is something I think would be attractive to the party, attractive to donors, attractive from a narrative standpoint. Outside of her gender, she’s a very strong conservative leader, so I think there’s some real value there for Trump,” he added.

A source close to the Trump campaign also said Stefanik being a woman would be a “real positive,” and that it was “a really big deal” to the former president that she has been a “staunch supporter.”

“I think she would be a very interesting pick. I think out on the campaign trail she would be very effective. I think she would be a net positive to the campaign,” the source said.

Eric Koch, a Democrat strategist, gave a more critical view of Stefanik’s strengths for the Republican ticket.

“The positive Elise Stefanik brings to a Trump ticket is obvious: she is willing to say and do anything to defend Donald Trump, no matter how absurd, ridiculous or embarrassing it may be,” he said. 

“There is quite literally no low that is too low for her — and this is a quality that Donald Trump not only needs, but demands, from his Vice President. Stefanik will gleefully debase herself in any way in support of Trump.”

Koch said two downsides to Stefanik’s selection, aside from the usual criticism from his party that she is “ultra MAGA,” was that she “had almost no accomplishments,” and that she “crumbles in debates and interviews” when pressed on topics.

One such instance occurred last week on Fox News when Stefanik was pressed by host Shannon Bream about a New York Times report questioning her loyalty to Trump over the years.

“If Trump was trying to win voters in the middle, there is hardly someone worse he could pick than Stefanik who carries water for the most extreme elements of the House Republicans,” Koch said.

Perrine, like Koch, said the liberal media and others on the left would likely label her a “MAGA extremist,” but also noted the “limited” impact her selection could have on the electoral map, considering she is from deep-blue New York.

“Losing her leadership role in the House could disrupt GOP cohesion,” Perrine added.

Polyansky argued that elevating someone straight from the House into being the first person in the presidential line of succession was “a little bit of a stretch.” He also argued her name recognition could be a problem.

“She isn’t really well known, even in the base of the Republican Party, so I don’t know that there would be a massive wow factor, which could be major for Trump. I’m not sure that she necessarily gives him that.”

The source close to the Trump campaign agreed it would be “difficult” for Stefanik’s name recognition alone to provide a big bump, but said that could be built up over time.

Stefanik’s office declined to comment for this story, but a source close to her told Fox that her flipping, and holding, a formerly Democrat-controlled district in New York was part of her appeal compared to the other potential names on Trump’s shortlist.

The source noted that Stefanik had more experience on Capitol Hill than Vice President Kamala Harris, and that she could have an immediate impact on implementing Trump’s legislative agenda if selected. 

They also argued that, as a young mom, she has been a strong supporter of IVF and a 15-week abortion ban, rather than the 6-week ban being pushed by other Republicans, a direct counter to Democrats’ focus on abortion.

A number of other big names have also been floated to join Trump on the Republican ticket, including South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, Ohio Sen. JD Vance and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Trump, who spent most of his week sitting on trial in a New York City courtroom while President Biden and Harris are free to hit the campaign trail, is still weighing his running mate options. He suggested earlier this month he might even wait until the July Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to name his pick.

Indian military ramps up AI capabilities to keep up with regional powers

CHENNAI, India — India, a country blessed with a strong high-tech industry, is applying its brains not just to commercial artificial intelligence (AI) but also to its military, as its neighbor and regional rival China continues to pour billions into AI research.

A 2023 report by an Indian think tank, the Delhi Policy Group, said India spends around $50 million a year on AI. The report noted that while India’s spending was a “good initial step,” it was “clearly inadequate compared to our primary strategic challenger, China, which is spending more than 30 times this amount. If we are not to fall behind the technology cycle, greater investments will have to be made, primarily to promote the indigenous industry players.” 

Antoine Levesques, a research fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) told Fox News Digital India “is pursuing its own efforts to build a national sovereign AI capability that can be used for its defense.”

“India has very ambitious plans,” he added. He cited the need to acquire foreign-made chips to “bolster the AI hardware capacity,” noting the “abundance of talent in its tech industry already.”

INDIAN ARMY GENERAL SAYS SITUATION ON BORDER WITH CHINA IS ‘UNPREDICTABLE’

In October, the military launched a robotic buddy, which was able to carry out tasks such as traverse and scout rugged terrain, remove unexploded shells and double as a stretcher for injured soldiers. It has two arms and two cameras and a platform with two additional cameras. The robot will be manually operated by a ground controller. The army may further develop this technology. The country’s navy is also believed to have autonomous aquatic robots that can go where humans cannot. 

“This battery-powered platform is built to withstand rugged terrain and measures one meter by one meter,” an Indian army official told The Times of India.

The Indian Army’s elite unit, the Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG), is researching and evaluating the implementation of emergent technologies such as AI and other potential updates in the ever-evolving arena of modern warfare. 

According to an analysis by Levesques, both India and the U.S. have, and are partnering in AI. 

At a meeting in 2022, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with his Indian counterpart, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, at the ninth ADMM (ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting), and AI was among the topics they discussed. Also that year, U.S. President Biden and India’s Prime Minister Modi announced a partnership known as the U.S.–India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies.

Levesques described an abundance of talent in India’s tech industry. He also noted that India’s higher English proficiency level could give it a slight edge in “availability of talent” but said that’s “not enough to counterbalance China’s capability.”  

“Adapting U.S. technology and developing your own both take time,” he added. He also noted that India is doing both of these in terms of economic and defense sectors.

Patrick Cronin, the Asia Pacific security chair at the Hudson institute in Washington, D.C., told Fox News Digital, “Generative AI (based on large language models) in particular is leading to rapid advances for understanding a common operating picture, so militaries can use this for intelligence to see what’s happening on a battlefield.”

AI may help gauge what overseas nations such as Pakistan and China are doing. Cronin explained that, akin to ChatGPT (also a form of generative AI), this technology can be used for providing information on real-time simulations and exercises bringing information as to what could happen. 

There is potential military use in three sectors — intelligence, training and education.  

Cronin warned that “China has a robot army” that possesses multiple autonomous drones in its arsenal, but he still believes that wider use of “autonomous systems” in general is “5-10 years away.”

A senior Indian defense ministry official told Deutsche Welle AI-powered drones and robots could patrol borders and reduce the need for human intervention in dangerous situations. Fox News Digital’s requests for comment from the Indian military were not immediately answered.

Cronin noted concerns, including the belief that AI, like any developing technology, could be used for many purposes, including those that are nefarious, such as the use of deepfakes to sow disinformation and other negative aspects. 

Thousands of Indians and Chinese at overseas universities are studying artificial intelligence. Cronin said he felt India has had an edge in the civilian sector of AI development but that it was countered by the Chinese having a military system that’s more “centralized and well-funded.”

“When you think of facial recognition and tie that to a distant battlefield with satellite imagery and to a drone that could be lethal, this is something that you could not have done 30–40 years ago, but now it is easily done,” Cronin added.

“The outcome of war is still horrible and tragic, and it needs to be as ethical, precise, justifiable and limited as possible. India has a leading role to play potentially in the debate of the growing use of AI in the battlefield or society in general. These issues are still in the beginning stages of what could be the future laws of war and the guardrails of high-tech civilization.”

Kapalua Bay is one spot in Maui where you are sure to see beautiful colors draped across the sky. 

Other beaches in Maui where you can catch the sunset with your toes in the sand are Kāʻanapali, Mākena (Big Beach) and Keawakapu.

8. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Seeing the sunset at Grand Canyon National Park is a unique experience. No matter where you are, you can catch a good glimpse of the sunset, although there are certain locations considered more favorable than others.

Mather Point is one spot where tourists flock to see the sunset from a spectacular viewing point, and there is also Yavapai Point and Hopi Point.

Mather Point is very easy to get to as it’s the first stop on the westbound Kaibab Rim (Orange) bus route from the visitor center, according to the National Park Service website. 

Just a short walk away is Yavapai Point. 

If your intended destination is Hopi Point, you can take the shuttle, or you can walk the Rim Trail to get there, according to the National Park Service website, which is about a 2.5-mile hike.

9. Uluru, Australia

Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a monolith, a large single stone, located in the Northern Territory. It is one of Australia’s most recognizable landmarks.

Many head to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to catch the sunrise or sunset.

Tahquamenon Falls is home to one of Mississippi’s most impressive waterfalls and ranks among the largest falls east of the Mississippi River. The park’s main attraction, the Upper Falls, features a dramatic 50-foot drop extending over 200 feet in width. Meanwhile, the Lower Falls comprises five smaller cascades.

Visitors to the park can enjoy various activities, including exploring the hiking trails, viewing the local wildlife and camping. Overnight guests can camp within the park or stay in nearby lodging.

With more than 165 miles of hiking trails, the island invites guests for day hikes or extensive backpacking excursions, including the Greenstone Ridge Trail, which runs the island’s length.
