Ex-Astro faces sign-stealing backlash after ripping Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s historic deal with Dodgers

0

Yoshinobu Yamamoto agreed to the largest deal ever given to a pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball last week — yet he has yet to even throw an MLB pitch.

The 25-year-old right-hander and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to 12-year, $325 million deal. The Dodgers continued their wild spending spree while giving a deal that surpassed Gerrit Cole for the most money ever given to a pitcher by just $1 million.

Of course, most baseball fans in the United States had no idea who Yamamoto was when the free agency period even started.

During the season, rumors swirled whether Yamamoto would even get $200 million in free agency. That alone would have been a record itself for the largest deal ever given to a Japanese player, and the largest ever to a player who had not yet played Major League Baseball.

So, former MLB outfielder Josh Reddick seemed confused as to how Yamamoto could sign such a contract.

“How do you give a guy $325 million without ever throwing a pitch in MLB,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

When one user replied that “baseball is ruined,” Reddick answered back, “I agree.”

METS TO PAY RECORD-SHATTERING $100 MILLION LUXURY TAX FOR SKY-HIGH PAYROLL: REPORT

Well, users of the platform were quick to respond to Reddick, who was a member of the 2017 Houston Astros, who notoriously bashed trash cans as part of an elaborate sign-stealing scheme en route to a World Series championship.

Many people were quick to say remind Reddick of the cheating, despite him saying baseball was ruined because of such immense contracts.

Those who didn’t call out the trash cans also reminded Reddick that baseball in Japan includes some of the best talent in the entire world — and Yamamoto dominated it.

Yamamoto has been named the MVP of the Pacific League in the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan for three straight years. In seven seasons in Japan, Yamamoto has pitched to a 1.72 ERA. With the Orix Buffaloes this year, his ERA was 1.21. In Game 6 of the Japan Series, he threw 138 pitches and struck out 14 batters in a 5-1 victory. His highest ERA in a single season in Japan was the 2.35 he posted in 2017.

And, to go against Reddick once more, it’s not like the Dodgers care too much about money after signing Shohei Ohtani to a $700 million, while $680 million of it is deferred.

Colin Kaepernick doesn’t celebrate Christmas, girlfriend reveals what they do for presents

0

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick revealed on his girlfriend’s podcast last week that they do not celebrate Christmas.

Nessa Diab’s co-host, Katrina B, on the “Nessa Off Air” podcast asked Kaepernick what he was getting for Nessa for Christmas. That was when he told her they do not celebrate the holiday.

“We don’t celebrate Christmas,” he said.

Nessa explained that they do something else instead of giving each other gifts.

“No, I’ll tell you what. We don’t give each other gifts. I think for Colin and I, we just enjoy really great experiences with each other year round,” she said.

Katrina, who works with Kaepernick on several of his off-the-field projects including the Know Your Rights Camp and his publishing company, said she wanted her partner, DJ Tone Def, to at least pretend that he likes the gifts that she gets for him.

“If that’s the energy you guys are on, and you guys both understand it, I think it’s fine,” Kratina said. “And if someone wants to go the extra mile and give a gift, that’s cool too. But you shouldn’t feel bad if you didn’t give them anything.

“So we’re not going presents with our significant others. You don’t do that. I actually don’t do that. We don’t even celebrate anniversaries. We don’t do any of it.”

Nessa said Katrina got DJ Tone Def gifts, but he would ask her to take them back. Katrina said she would get gifts from him and use them even if she did not love them.

This mind-reading tech using AI can convert brain activity into text

0

Imagine if you could communicate with anyone without saying a word, just by thinking. That’s the promise of a new technology developed by researchers from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), who have created a portable, non-invasive system that can decode silent thoughts and turn them into text.

This mind-reading tech using AI can convert brain activity into text

DeWave technology in use (University of Technology Sydney) (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

How does the technology work?

The technology, called DeWave, uses an electroencephalogram (EEG) cap to record electrical brain activity through the scalp. It then uses an artificial intelligence (AI) model to segment the EEG wave into distinct units that capture specific characteristics and patterns from the human brain. DeWave translates these units into words and sentences by learning from large quantities of EEG data.

MORE: HOW AI COULD REVOLUTIONIZE FULL-BODY SCANS AND CANCER DETECTION

Why this technology is a game-changer

The technology could aid communication for people who are unable to speak due to illness or injury, such as stroke or paralysis. It could also enable seamless communication between humans and machines, such as the operation of a bionic arm or robot.

The technology is also more accessible and convenient than previous methods of translating brain signals to language, which have either required surgery to implant electrodes in the brain, or scanning in an MRI machine, which is large, expensive, and difficult to use in daily life.

This mind-reading tech using AI can convert brain activity into text

DeWave technology (University of Technology Sydney) (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

DeWave is the first technology to incorporate discrete encoding techniques in the brain-to-text translation process, introducing an innovative approach to neural decoding. The integration with large language models is also opening new frontiers in neuroscience and AI, according to the researchers.

MORE: ELON MUSK’S CREEPY BRAIN-COMPUTER INTERFACE GETS GREEN LIGHT FOR HUMAN TRIALS

How the technology was tested

The technology was tested with 29 participants who silently read passages of text while wearing the EEG cap. The researchers found that DeWave was able to translate EEG signals into words and sentences with a high degree of accuracy, surpassing previous benchmarks.

The technology was also able to translate EEG signals without the need for eye-tracking, which is often used as an additional aid to segment brain signals into word-level units. This means that the technology can be used either with or without eye-tracking, depending on the preference and condition of the user.

The researchers also observed that the technology was more adept at matching verbs than nouns and that it sometimes produced synonymous pairs rather than precise translations, such as ‘the man’ instead of ‘the author.’ They explained that this might be because semantically similar words might produce similar brain wave patterns.

The researchers hope to improve the translation accuracy score of the technology, which is currently around 40% on BLEU-1, a measure of similarity between machine-translated text and human reference translations. They aim to achieve a level that is comparable to traditional language translation or speech recognition programs, which is closer to 90%.

What the future holds for this technology

The researchers hope that their technology will have a positive impact on society, especially for people who have difficulty communicating verbally. They also envision that their technology will enable new forms of interaction and collaboration between humans and machines, such as controlling robots or virtual assistants with thoughts.

They plan to continue their research and development of the technology and explore its potential applications and implications in various domains and scenarios. They also welcome feedback and suggestions from the public and potential users of the technology.

Kurt’s key takeaways

DeWave is a groundbreaking technology that can read your mind and turn it into text. It has the potential to revolutionize communication, assistive technology, and human-machine interaction. It is also a remarkable achievement in the fields of neuroscience and AI, demonstrating the power of discrete encoding and large language models. DeWave is still in its early stages of development, but it is already showing promising results and exciting possibilities.

NFL bettor cashes nearly $500K payday as Christian McCaffrey completes his 14-leg parlay

0

The San Francisco 49ers may have lost to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night, but there was at least one NFL fan who was a big winner thanks to a $5 bet on a 14-leg parlay.

The New Jersey bettor, identified as Travis Dufner, started the Week 16 slate of NFL games needing touchdowns from Christian McCaffrey, Najee Harris, Gabriel Davis, Jahmyr Gibbs, DK Metcalf, Jerome Ford, Chris Rodriguez Jr., Jonathan Taylor, Calvin Ridley, James Conner, Raheem Mostert, Javonte Williams, Isiah Pacheco and D’Andre Swift.

He bet $5 to potentially win $489,378.01 at nearly 100,000-to-1 odds on DraftKings Sportsbook. All he needed was the 49ers running back to score a touchdown. Jubilation struck with 3:23 left in the second quarter as McCaffrey ran for a 9-yard touchdown to cut San Francisco’s deficit to one point.

The Bleacher Report shared Dufner’s video of himself watching the 49ers star score the touchdown. He and his buddies watched the replay of the touchdown to make sure McCaffrey was not down short of the goal line.

Tony Romo describes Taylor Swift as Travis Kelce’s ‘wife’ again

0

Tony Romo made at least one bad call during Monday afternoon’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders, and it was a mistake he made earlier in the season as well.

The entire NFL and pop culture world knows the relationship status of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and pop star Taylor Swift. However, it did not stop the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback from jumping the gun again when it came to their relationship.

“Wow! You saw the juice. He caught that, he took off. Looking like a young Kelce … And his wife loves it, I mean girlfriend,” Romo said.

Ravens’ Lamar Jackson takes aim at NFL reporter over ‘disrespectful’ prediction

0

Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson called out Pro Football Talk founder Mike Florio after the team’s 33-19 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.

Florio predicted that the 49ers would “kick the s— out of the Ravens” as long as they stayed healthy. However, Jackson’s two touchdowns and the Ravens’ impeccable defensive play guided Baltimore to a huge win to stay on top of the AFC with two weeks left to go before the playoffs begin.

Jackson called out Florio in the tunnel as he walked to the locker room and was asked about his comments in the press conference.

We have to feed our families,” Jackson said. “(Mike Florio) can have his opinion, but don’t just talk like that. That’s disrespectful. That’s very disrespectful. Not to take away from the 49ers at all, because they’re great all across the board, but we’re going to come to play as well.

“Our record (isn’t a) fluke. We play ball, and we showed that. He just needs to keep doing his job, but just don’t come off like that towards us. That’s disrespectful, like I said, because he isn’t putting the pads on. If he was putting the pads on, I feel like it would’ve been different for him. He wouldn’t say that. He’d be respectful.

Florio apologized for his remarks on X.

“Lamar is right. I apologize for how I phrased my opinion. I believed the 49ers were dramatically better than every other team in the NFL: Cowboys, Eagles, Chiefs, Dolphins, everyone. The Ravens proved otherwise. They deserve complete and total respect for what they accomplished,” he wrote.

Raiders’ Jack Jones denies purposely fooling young Chiefs fan after returning interception for touchdown

Genocide, famine in Sudan as Biden admin accused of being ‘idle’

0

JOHANNESBURG – New misery on a biblical scale has been forced upon the people of Sudan this week as the Biden administration is accused by some of standing “idle.” Amid the war, Russia’s Wagner Group continues to mine and export Sudanese gold to finance the Kremlin’s war against Ukraine.

Rebel militia from the Rapid Support Force or RSF, are terrorizing residents and looting everything they can lay their hands on in the regional capital of Wad Madina, according to eyewitnesses who have talked to Fox News Digital.

At least a quarter of million people have fled the area in the past few days, on top of the six million who have already had to quit their homes, according to U.N. sources.

Many of these have only recently run from fighting in the capital, Khartoum, to a place they thought they’d be safe.

“This is a terrible and traumatic turn of events,” Mathilde Vu, advocacy manager for Sudan for the Norwegian Refugee Council, told Fox News Digital. “Wad Madani has been a safe haven for 84,000 people who fled Khartoum just a few months back.”

“Many of them have lost everything already: their homes, their assets, sometimes even their relatives. Now they are living this nightmare again – only this time, with even less resources and abilities to flee.”

“Sudan is a state that has collapsed,” intelligence analyst Jasmine Opperman told Fox News Digital.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this month accused the two sides in Sudan’s conflict, the government’s Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of war crimes, and singled out the RSF for committing “crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.”

Both sides, he added, “have unleashed horrific violence, death and destruction across Sudan.”

“Across Sudan,” Blinken continued, “the RSF and allied militias have terrorized women and girls through sexual violence, attacking them in their homes, kidnapping them from the streets, or targeting those trying to flee. In haunting echoes of the genocide that began almost 20 years ago in Darfur, we have seen an explosion of targeted violence against some of the same survivors’ communities.”

Over 12,000 have been killed since the conflict began April 15, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Sudan civil war

In addition, a State Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital, Sudan has “one of the world’s largest displacement crises.”

“About 5.3 million people have been displaced within Sudan,” OCHA stated this past week, citing the International Organization for Migration Displacement Tracking Matrix. It added that about 1.3 million people crossed into neighboring countries.

“Achieving a sustainable solution requires ending violence and resuming a civilian-owned political process to form a civilian government and restore Sudan’s democratic transition,” the State Department spokesperson continued. “Our message is clear and consistent: The United States and our regional and international partners are unified in calling for the parties to immediately end the fighting in Sudan, and for the SAF and the RSF to silence the guns.”

The message may be clear, but critics say it is not being delivered with sufficient persuasion.

“It is difficult to end such a war unless a powerful regional or international force would intervene directly,” Walid Phares told Fox News Digital. Phares is a Washington-based foreign policy expert and secretary general of the Transatlantic Parliamentary Group. He is the author of 15 books, including “Iran and Imperialist Republic and U.S. Policy.”

Sudan violence

“But no neighboring government, Arab country, or international party was willing to partake in such a mission,” Phares added.

“In the era of the Ukraine war, and now since Oct. 7 and the Gaza war, literally all players are focused on their national interest and not peacemaking in a difficult and large country. Sudan is too large and too complex to digest.”

“The Biden administration is dealing with too many crises as it is entering its election year. From today’s attacks by the Houthi Iran-backed militia against civilian ships in the Red Sea, to the Ukraine war, to the transfer of power to the Taliban, and last but not least the Gaza War, the Biden administration is perceived as weak and unable to act internationally. Thus regarding Sudan, Washington is idle, vague and seems to not intervene to stop the tragedy,” Phares said.

Sudan violence

Opperman agreed. She told Fox News Digital: “Any intervention through peace talks will merely be words on paper. Indeed, a hopeless case. There needs to be a complete rethink beyond the two leaders, the two bullets, now at play. That will take time.”

“What is the United States doing with its sanctions?” Opperman asked: “Its voice, and its influence is diminishing by the day.”

Opperman believes the leaders of both warring factions in Sudan “have one aspiration, and that is to become president. But we are currently looking at warlords in full force. To talk about an official Sudanese army at this point in time is a joke.”

Sudan researcher Eric Reeves also has little faith that peace talks in Saudi Arabia, in which the U.S. are involved, will bear any fruit. He is concerned that such fruit, and other food and aid, are not getting through to Sudan’s civilians. “The convoy routes from Port Sudan (a principal supply corridor) are even more dangerous – and thus less used – than just a few weeks ago,” Reeves told Fox News Digital. “The perfect storm for large-scale famine is visible… and the international community really has not engaged in a useful way. It is an unspeakably grim outlook.”

Enter the Russians, in the shady shape of the Wagner Group, literally a combination of mercenaries and precious metal extractors.

Phares notes, “The Wagner group now seems to have chosen a partner in Sudan, the (rebel) RSF, complicating the situation further.”

Opperman added: “Wagner cannot be ignored in Sudan.” The Wagner Group mines gold in Sudan, and exports it, with the proceeds reportedly helping to bankroll its war against Ukraine. Wagner reportedly supports the anti-government RSF and, Opperman told Fox News Digital, wants this African conflict to continue: “Wagner will counter any attempt at seeking a democratic consolidation within Sudan, because of the economic profits they are making from the mining industry. Ignoring darkening Sudan will be a pivotal mistake.”

Sudan is a key country for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Rebekah Koffler told Fox News Digital. Koffler is president of Doctrine & Strategy Consulting, and a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer. “Moscow views Sudan as the key ‘gate to Africa.’ Gold mining and the establishment of a Red Sea naval base at Port Sudan are top priorities.”

“Now that Iranian proxies have turned the Red Sea into a battlefield disrupting maritime traffic through the Suez Canal,” Koffler continued, “Putin wants to make sure Russia is positioned well in this geographic choke point.”

“Putin is not necessarily pulling the strings in Sudan, but Russia is taking advantage of the conflict and is fueling it to some extent, by flowing new weapons, riot gear and fighters, through the Wagner Group.”

“Wagner is not acting on its own”, claims Koffler. “They are a proxy force of the Russian government that directs their activities at the strategic, but not tactical, level. Wagner is effectively executing Putin’s ‘Great Game’ in Africa.”

Meanwhile, many of the ordinary men, women and children of Sudan are homeless – and hungry. “The humanitarian appeals for Sudan are largely unfunded,” the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Vu told Fox News Digital, “After nine months of constant violence and displacements, we are reaching the limits. The international solidarity must step up and fund the response.”

Opperman is pessimistic about the future: “Sudan, yet again, is repeating its own history and inclination to destroy itself by means of warlords.”

As a solution, Phares believes the U.S. should move firmly, and now. “Washington should have at least moved to stop the most recent massacres in West Darfur perpetrated by the old Jihadi Janjaweed, who were responsible – according to the U.N. – of a genocide against Black Africans in 2004-2005,” he said. “The U.S. should lead a peace force, enter Geneina, the capital of Darfur, and establish a safe zone.”

However, Phares has reservations: “One could believe that short of a massive change in U.S. foreign policy by early 2025, the Sudan conflict will still be raging, and possibly all other tensions in the region as well. One more time, it is a presidential election in the U.S. that could impact Sudan and the world.”

Here’s the average net worth of Americans for every age group — how do you stack up? (Plus 3 easy tips to boost your wealth if you’re way behind)

When it comes to the net worth of many Americans, trouble does indeed come in threes.

A 2023 study found that 51% of Americans have no clue how to calculate their assets to get a true view of their money, and nearly a third believe they have a zero — or negative — net worth.

Don’t miss

And the kicker: One third of respondents claimed they knew the net worth of at least one celebrity — subtly suggesting that some of us may be more interested in the numbers of the rich and famous than in our own financial health.

The findings from CreditKarma’s survey are a shocking reminder about the varying degrees of attention to which Americans pay their own finances.

The study found that 61% of women say they don’t know how to calculate their net worth (61%), with roughly 4-in-10 men saying they don’t know. Among the survey’s other disturbing findings: 21% of respondents aged 59 and older — those most likely closest to their retirement years — reported having nothing.

Here’s how to find your net worth — and some simple tips to boost it if you’re not happy with the final figure.

Finding your net worth

Calculating your net worth is fairly simple: Add up your assets from bank accounts, retirement accounts and investments as well as your house, vehicles and other property, then subtract your debts and liabilities. What’s left? That’s your net worth.

Understanding that asset total is important because it gives you a clear picture of your financial situation, helping you identify areas where you can improve your finances, like paying down debt or saving more money.

Additionally, knowing your net worth can be a helpful tool for planning for the future, like retirement or buying a house.

How do you stack up?

Before searching for your place in the wealth spectrum, it’s important to understand the difference between average worth and median worth. Keep in mind that the average will usually be higher, since that figure is heavily impacted by wealthy outliers whose totals raise the average even if most people in the group have considerably smaller sums.

Every three years the Federal Reserve outlines family net worth average and medians by age group. Here’s the latest data, released in October 2023.

  • 35 and under: average of $183,500 and median of $39,000

  • 35 to 44: average of $549,600 and median of $135,600

  • 45 to 54: average of $975,800 and median of $247,200

  • 55 to 64: average of $1,566,900 and median of $364,500

  • 65 to 74: average of $1,794,600 and median of $409,900

  • 75 and older: average of $1,624,100 and median of $355,600

Overall, the average net worth for all families increased by 23%; meanwhile, the median net worth for all families increased by 37 over the same period.

If those numbers leave you feeling a bit behind, don’t worry — you’re not alone. Millions of people struggle to save money and build wealth. But there are simple and important steps you can take to get back on track and boost your net worth.

Reduce debt, and start living below your means. If you’re spending more than you earn, you’ll never be able to save money or build wealth. So start by focusing on trimming and erasing debt and cutting back on your expenses. There are many ways to do this, like cooking at home more often, canceling unnecessary subscriptions, and shopping around for better deals on insurance and other services.

Make a budget and stick to it. A budget will help you track your spending and make sure you’re not overspending. There are many different budgeting methods out there, so find one that works for you and stick with it. Consider starting here.

Start saving in earnest. Consider putting away a designated percentage of your monthly income in a high-yield savings account, a certificate of deposit (CD), or an investment account. Take advantage of retirement accounts like 401(k)s or IRAs, which offer tax advantages and potential employer matching. Automate your savings by setting up regular contributions, even if they’re small. The power of compound interest can work wonders over time, so the earlier you start, the better.
