Ravens’ Lamar Jackson takes aim at NFL reporter over ‘disrespectful’ prediction

0

Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson called out Pro Football Talk founder Mike Florio after the team’s 33-19 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.

Florio predicted that the 49ers would “kick the s— out of the Ravens” as long as they stayed healthy. However, Jackson’s two touchdowns and the Ravens’ impeccable defensive play guided Baltimore to a huge win to stay on top of the AFC with two weeks left to go before the playoffs begin.

Jackson called out Florio in the tunnel as he walked to the locker room and was asked about his comments in the press conference.

“We’re in the NFL. We play ball. Not to take away from that team, but you can’t just discredit us. We’re grown men. We have to feed our families,” Jackson said. “(Mike Florio) can have his opinion, but don’t just talk like that. That’s disrespectful. That’s very disrespectful. Not to take away from the 49ers at all, because they’re great all across the board, but we’re going to come to play as well.

“Our record (isn’t a) fluke. We play ball, and we showed that. He just needs to keep doing his job, but just don’t come off like that towards us. That’s disrespectful, like I said, because he isn’t putting the pads on. If he was putting the pads on, I feel like it would’ve been different for him. He wouldn’t say that. He’d be respectful.

“I say that to say this; we’re respectful to our opponents. Our opponents are respectful to us, but a guy who’s not even playing against us (and) just coming out and being disrespectful, I guess he wanted more views on his little channel. We’re going to leave it at that.”

Florio apologized for his remarks on X.

“Lamar is right. I apologize for how I phrased my opinion. I believed the 49ers were dramatically better than every other team in the NFL: Cowboys, Eagles, Chiefs, Dolphins, everyone. The Ravens proved otherwise. They deserve complete and total respect for what they accomplished,” he wrote.

Raiders’ Jack Jones denies purposely fooling young Chiefs fan after returning interception for touchdown

Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jack Jones appeared to withhold the holiday joy from a Kansas City Chiefs fan on Monday when he faked him out after returning an interception for a touchdown.

Jones took the Patrick Mahomes pass back 33 yards for the score and helped put the Raiders up 17-7. He was immediately labeled as a Grinch for keeping the ball, but the defensive back explained in a post on X he was not trying to fool the kid sitting near the railing.

“I didn’t snatch that ball from the kid it was from that blac dude who tried to take it watch it again lollipop,” he wrote on X.

Jones now has two interceptions on the year – both coming after he joined the Raiders from the New England Patriots. He has 20 tackles in the silver and black as well.

Las Vegas capitalized on a couple of Kansas City miscues during the win. Bilal Nichols returned a fumble for a touchdown on the series before Mahomes’ pick-six. It was what really helped the Raiders to the win.

The Raiders did not get much out of Aiden O’Connell. The quarterback was 9 of 21 with 62 passing yards. Zamir White ran for 145 yards.

The Raiders defense sacked Mahomes four times. Malcolm Koonce got to Mahomes three times, and Maxx Crosby sacked him once. Jones finished with five total tackles, and Nichols had three. Kansas City outgained Las Vegas, 308-205. The Chiefs ran 18 more plays than the Raiders, too.

Genocide, famine in Sudan as Biden admin accused of being ‘idle’

0

JOHANNESBURG – New misery on a biblical scale has been forced upon the people of Sudan this week as the Biden administration is accused by some of standing “idle.” Amid the war, Russia’s Wagner Group continues to mine and export Sudanese gold to finance the Kremlin’s war against Ukraine.

Rebel militia from the Rapid Support Force or RSF, are terrorizing residents and looting everything they can lay their hands on in the regional capital of Wad Madina, according to eyewitnesses who have talked to Fox News Digital.

At least a quarter of million people have fled the area in the past few days, on top of the six million who have already had to quit their homes, according to U.N. sources.

Many of these have only recently run from fighting in the capital, Khartoum, to a place they thought they’d be safe.

“This is a terrible and traumatic turn of events,” Mathilde Vu, advocacy manager for Sudan for the Norwegian Refugee Council, told Fox News Digital. “Wad Madani has been a safe haven for 84,000 people who fled Khartoum just a few months back.”

“Many of them have lost everything already: their homes, their assets, sometimes even their relatives. Now they are living this nightmare again – only this time, with even less resources and abilities to flee.”

“Sudan is a state that has collapsed,” intelligence analyst Jasmine Opperman told Fox News Digital.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this month accused the two sides in Sudan’s conflict, the government’s Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of war crimes, and singled out the RSF for committing “crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.”

Both sides, he added, “have unleashed horrific violence, death and destruction across Sudan.”

“Across Sudan,” Blinken continued, “the RSF and allied militias have terrorized women and girls through sexual violence, attacking them in their homes, kidnapping them from the streets, or targeting those trying to flee. In haunting echoes of the genocide that began almost 20 years ago in Darfur, we have seen an explosion of targeted violence against some of the same survivors’ communities.”

Over 12,000 have been killed since the conflict began April 15, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

In addition, a State Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital, Sudan has “one of the world’s largest displacement crises.”

“About 5.3 million people have been displaced within Sudan,” OCHA stated this past week, citing the International Organization for Migration Displacement Tracking Matrix. It added that about 1.3 million people crossed into neighboring countries.

“Achieving a sustainable solution requires ending violence and resuming a civilian-owned political process to form a civilian government and restore Sudan’s democratic transition,” the State Department spokesperson continued. “Our message is clear and consistent: The United States and our regional and international partners are unified in calling for the parties to immediately end the fighting in Sudan, and for the SAF and the RSF to silence the guns.”

The message may be clear, but critics say it is not being delivered with sufficient persuasion.

“It is difficult to end such a war unless a powerful regional or international force would intervene directly,” Walid Phares told Fox News Digital. Phares is a Washington-based foreign policy expert and secretary general of the Transatlantic Parliamentary Group. He is the author of 15 books, including “Iran and Imperialist Republic and U.S. Policy.”

Sudan violence

“But no neighboring government, Arab country, or international party was willing to partake in such a mission,” Phares added.

“In the era of the Ukraine war, and now since Oct. 7 and the Gaza war, literally all players are focused on their national interest and not peacemaking in a difficult and large country. Sudan is too large and too complex to digest.”

“The Biden administration is dealing with too many crises as it is entering its election year. From today’s attacks by the Houthi Iran-backed militia against civilian ships in the Red Sea, to the Ukraine war, to the transfer of power to the Taliban, and last but not least the Gaza War, the Biden administration is perceived as weak and unable to act internationally. Thus regarding Sudan, Washington is idle, vague and seems to not intervene to stop the tragedy,” Phares said.

Sudan violence

Opperman agreed. She told Fox News Digital: “Any intervention through peace talks will merely be words on paper. Indeed, a hopeless case. There needs to be a complete rethink beyond the two leaders, the two bullets, now at play. That will take time.”

“What is the United States doing with its sanctions?” Opperman asked: “Its voice, and its influence is diminishing by the day.”

Opperman believes the leaders of both warring factions in Sudan “have one aspiration, and that is to become president. But we are currently looking at warlords in full force. To talk about an official Sudanese army at this point in time is a joke.”

Sudan researcher Eric Reeves also has little faith that peace talks in Saudi Arabia, in which the U.S. are involved, will bear any fruit. He is concerned that such fruit, and other food and aid, are not getting through to Sudan’s civilians. “The convoy routes from Port Sudan (a principal supply corridor) are even more dangerous – and thus less used – than just a few weeks ago,” Reeves told Fox News Digital. “The perfect storm for large-scale famine is visible… and the international community really has not engaged in a useful way. It is an unspeakably grim outlook.”

Sudan massacre

Enter the Russians, in the shady shape of the Wagner Group, literally a combination of mercenaries and precious metal extractors.

Phares notes, “The Wagner group now seems to have chosen a partner in Sudan, the (rebel) RSF, complicating the situation further.”

MILLIONS IN EASTERN CONGO IN NEED OF URGENT CARE AS HUMANITARIAN CRISIS, SEXUAL VIOLENCE WORSEN, UN SAYS

Opperman added: “Wagner cannot be ignored in Sudan.” The Wagner Group mines gold in Sudan, and exports it, with the proceeds reportedly helping to bankroll its war against Ukraine. Wagner reportedly supports the anti-government RSF and, Opperman told Fox News Digital, wants this African conflict to continue: “Wagner will counter any attempt at seeking a democratic consolidation within Sudan, because of the economic profits they are making from the mining industry. Ignoring darkening Sudan will be a pivotal mistake.”

Sudan is a key country for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Rebekah Koffler told Fox News Digital. Koffler is president of Doctrine & Strategy Consulting, and a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer. “Moscow views Sudan as the key ‘gate to Africa.’ Gold mining and the establishment of a Red Sea naval base at Port Sudan are top priorities.”

“Now that Iranian proxies have turned the Red Sea into a battlefield disrupting maritime traffic through the Suez Canal,” Koffler continued, “Putin wants to make sure Russia is positioned well in this geographic choke point.”

“Putin is not necessarily pulling the strings in Sudan, but Russia is taking advantage of the conflict and is fueling it to some extent, by flowing new weapons, riot gear and fighters, through the Wagner Group.”

“Wagner is not acting on its own”, claims Koffler. “They are a proxy force of the Russian government that directs their activities at the strategic, but not tactical, level. Wagner is effectively executing Putin’s ‘Great Game’ in Africa.”

Sudan civil war

Meanwhile, many of the ordinary men, women and children of Sudan are homeless – and hungry. “The humanitarian appeals for Sudan are largely unfunded,” the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Vu told Fox News Digital, “After nine months of constant violence and displacements, we are reaching the limits. The international solidarity must step up and fund the response.”

Opperman is pessimistic about the future: “Sudan, yet again, is repeating its own history and inclination to destroy itself by means of warlords.”

As a solution, Phares believes the U.S. should move firmly, and now. “Washington should have at least moved to stop the most recent massacres in West Darfur perpetrated by the old Jihadi Janjaweed, who were responsible – according to the U.N. – of a genocide against Black Africans in 2004-2005,” he said. “The U.S. should lead a peace force, enter Geneina, the capital of Darfur, and establish a safe zone.”

However, Phares has reservations: “One could believe that short of a massive change in U.S. foreign policy by early 2025, the Sudan conflict will still be raging, and possibly all other tensions in the region as well. One more time, it is a presidential election in the U.S. that could impact Sudan and the world.”

Here's the average net worth of Americans for every age group — how do you stack up? (Plus 3 easy tips to boost your wealth if you're way behind)

Here’s the average net worth of Americans for every age group — how do you stack up? (Plus 3 easy tips to boost your wealth if you’re way behind)

When it comes to the net worth of many Americans, trouble does indeed come in threes.

A 2023 study found that 51% of Americans have no clue how to calculate their assets to get a true view of their money, and nearly a third believe they have a zero — or negative — net worth.

Don’t miss

And the kicker: One third of respondents claimed they knew the net worth of at least one celebrity — subtly suggesting that some of us may be more interested in the numbers of the rich and famous than in our own financial health.

The findings from CreditKarma’s survey are a shocking reminder about the varying degrees of attention to which Americans pay their own finances.

The study found that 61% of women say they don’t know how to calculate their net worth (61%), with roughly 4-in-10 men saying they don’t know. Among the survey’s other disturbing findings: 21% of respondents aged 59 and older — those most likely closest to their retirement years — reported having nothing.

Here’s how to find your net worth — and some simple tips to boost it if you’re not happy with the final figure.

Finding your net worth

Calculating your net worth is fairly simple: Add up your assets from bank accounts, retirement accounts and investments as well as your house, vehicles and other property, then subtract your debts and liabilities. What’s left? That’s your net worth.

Understanding that asset total is important because it gives you a clear picture of your financial situation, helping you identify areas where you can improve your finances, like paying down debt or saving more money.

Additionally, knowing your net worth can be a helpful tool for planning for the future, like retirement or buying a house.

How do you stack up?

Before searching for your place in the wealth spectrum, it’s important to understand the difference between average worth and median worth. Keep in mind that the average will usually be higher, since that figure is heavily impacted by wealthy outliers whose totals raise the average even if most people in the group have considerably smaller sums.

Every three years the Federal Reserve outlines family net worth average and medians by age group. Here’s the latest data, released in October 2023.

  • 35 and under: average of $183,500 and median of $39,000

  • 35 to 44: average of $549,600 and median of $135,600

  • 45 to 54: average of $975,800 and median of $247,200

  • 55 to 64: average of $1,566,900 and median of $364,500

  • 65 to 74: average of $1,794,600 and median of $409,900

  • 75 and older: average of $1,624,100 and median of $355,600

Overall, the average net worth for all families increased by 23%; meanwhile, the median net worth for all families increased by 37 over the same period.

If those numbers leave you feeling a bit behind, don’t worry — you’re not alone. Millions of people struggle to save money and build wealth. But there are simple and important steps you can take to get back on track and boost your net worth.

Reduce debt, and start living below your means. If you’re spending more than you earn, you’ll never be able to save money or build wealth. So start by focusing on trimming and erasing debt and cutting back on your expenses. There are many ways to do this, like cooking at home more often, canceling unnecessary subscriptions, and shopping around for better deals on insurance and other services.

Make a budget and stick to it. A budget will help you track your spending and make sure you’re not overspending. There are many different budgeting methods out there, so find one that works for you and stick with it. Consider starting here.

Start saving in earnest. Consider putting away a designated percentage of your monthly income in a high-yield savings account, a certificate of deposit (CD), or an investment account. Take advantage of retirement accounts like 401(k)s or IRAs, which offer tax advantages and potential employer matching. Automate your savings by setting up regular contributions, even if they’re small. The power of compound interest can work wonders over time, so the earlier you start, the better.

Set up strong passwords and PINs

Change default passwords and PINs immediately. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or names. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)

Wherever possible, activate 2FA for added security. This provides an extra layer of protection by requiring a second verification step, such as a text message or authentication app.

Consider privacy screen protectors (for smartphones and laptops)

Privacy screen protectors can prevent others from viewing your screen from the side, enhancing your privacy when using your device in public spaces.

Create a backup system for photos and documents

If your device stores important data (e.g., photos, documents), immediately set up a backup system. This can be done through cloud services or external storage devices to ensure your data is safe.

Install antivirus protection on all your new devices

The best way to ensure that your devices are protected and that no one is snooping around on your data or browsing history is by purchasing antivirus software. To protect yourself from having your data breached, have antivirus protection installed on all your new devices. Having good antivirus software actively running on your new devices will alert you of any malware in your system, warn you against clicking on any malicious links in phishing emails, and ultimately protect you from being hacked. What do I do if I get a new Smart TV?

If you received electronics as gifts for the holidays, here’s what you should do first

Child playing a game on smart TV (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

Smart TVs are a great device to receive for the holidays. Not only do they give you access to tons of streaming apps, but they also allow you to browse the internet, stream music and videos, and even look at photos. With all these features comes a certain amount of risk regarding targeted ads and malware. While any smart device can be infected with malware, Smart TVs are usually not the devices that experience this kind of attack. Although it has happened in the past with both Samsung and Apple TVs, those cases are extremely rare. However, before you begin enjoying your favorite movies and TV shows, take these steps to protect your Smart TV.

Disable ads and tracking

Disabling ads and tracking on your Smart TV will mostly limit your TV from collecting data on you and the content you’re watching. Here’s how to disable that feature on Samsung, LG, and Vizio TVs:

LG

Some models may have different settings or options, so you should always check the user manual or the official website of LG for the most updated information.

  • Go to Settings > Additional Settings > General
  • Select Live Plus to disable Automated Content Recognition (ACR)
  • Select Advertisements and change the setting to “Do Not Sell My Personal Information
  • Review terms of use and privacy policy and then opt out of Viewing Information, Voice Information, Interest-Based & Cross-Device Advertising, and Live Plus Automatic Content Recognition

Samsung

Some models may have different settings or options, so you should always check the user manual or the official website of Samsung for the most updated information.

  • Go to Settings > Support > Terms & Privacy > Privacy Choices
  • Select Viewing Information Services to disable Automated Content Recognition (ACR)
  • Select Voice Recognition Services to adjust voice data collection

Vizio

Some models may have different settings or options, so you should always check the user manual or the official website of Vizio for the most updated information.

  • Go to Settings>Admin & Privacy
  • Select Viewing Data to turn off Automated Content Recognition (ACR)
  • Select Advertising to adjust ad tracking

Disable all camera and voice recognition settings

Most Smart TVs do not come with built-in microphones and cameras, but there is a way to turn off those features for the brands that do.

Samsung

  • Go to Settings > Support > Terms & Policies
  • Go to Voice Recognition Services and select Off
  • Some Samsung models come with retractable cameras in the middle of the device. Gently push it back without touching the lens until you hear it click to turn it off

LG

  • Go to Settings>All Settings>General
  • Select User Agreements
  • Disable the Voice Information setting
  • Some LG TV models come with retractable cameras. Keep the lens pushed down when you are not using it.

Other Smart TV brands may come with external cameras. Make sure they are unplugged whenever you are not using them.

If you have old devices that you don’t need, you can sell them or recycle them. Some services will pay you even if your devices are not working. To get the best deal for your devices, you need to choose the right service. Here are some services that you can use:

1) Amazon’s Trade-In Program

Amazon’s Trade-In Program is a quick and easy way for you to earn something from your old and unused electronics. Most older electronics decrease in value as time goes on, so it’s not likely that you’ll be able to earn a ton of money by selling them. Sure, you could always give your old item to a friend or family member if it’s still in good shape. However, if they are going to want to use something newer as well, then this is the perfect way for you to recycle your items and earn money back at the same time. Follow these steps on how this program works.

2) Decluttr

Decluttr is one of the easiest and fastest ways to sell used tech, including cellphones, unwanted MacBooks, tablets and game consoles, but also CDs, DVDs, games and books, too. Decluttr pays 30% more on average compared to Apple or Samsung buyback programs for smartphones. You can see what they would pay for your old tech online before committing to selling it here on Decluttr.

Draymond Green using virtual meetings to chart progress toward return

0

Longtime Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green is undergoing counseling as a condition of his indefinite suspension. However, he is also attending virtual meetings with team officials, representatives from the players union and the NBA in an effort to track his progress toward reinstatement, according to a report from ESPN.

Green continues to work to identify and correct whatever issues possibly played a role in his multiple outbursts during games. The video conference calls are believed to help measure how Green is working to make changes, sources told ESPN.

The report noted that Green has appeared to take an open-minded approach since the NBA handed down its discipline earlier this month.

Green is represented by Klutch Sports founder Rich Paul. The powerful sports agent, along with Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., are believed to be a part of the group participating in the ongoing meetings, per ESPN.

The NBA has previously state that Green must fulfill certain league and team conditions” in order for his suspension to be lifted. The league announced the indefinite suspension on Dec. 13, one day after the Warriors forward hit Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in the face. Green was suspended earlier this season for a separate on-court altercation.

ESPN reported that there is a “general belief” that Green will likely sit out for around 11–13 games, barring any setbacks.

The Warriors’ Christmas Day loss to the defending champion Denver Nuggets marked the seventh straight game that Golden State played without their four-time All-Star forward.

Ex-Cowboys star Dez Bryant roils social media as he says he doesn’t like ‘talking football with certain women’

Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant ruffled the feathers of social media on Saturday night as he analyzed the Buffalo Bills-Los Angeles Chargers game.

Bryant wrote on X that if the Bills lost the game, sports pundits would be critical of Josh Allen as he is playing with an offense that includes Stefon Diggs. He also said Diggs should leave the Bills after the season is over.

One person named “Laura” responded to Bryant, saying that the wide receiver should not be “making up drama just because your team lost,” referencing Dallas’ narrow defeat at the hands of the Miami Dolphins. Bryant’s response triggered social media.

“Making up drama? I said something gotta be up And Yea ok,” he wrote in response. “Btw I personally don’t like talking football with Certain! women because they don’t know their role in talking a man’s a game I’ll never tell you how to put on a skirt.”

Bryant’s “certain woman” remark caused outrage on social media with some even labeling him a “sexist.” However, the three-time Pro Bowler pushed back on all the criticism throughout the night.

“I will clearly talk to a woman who know the game but I will not even waste my time talking to a woman who don’t know anything about the game,” he wrote. “Anybody who got a problem with what I said Unfollow me please I don’t like all that sensitive s— Get out of my mentions.”

He also doubled down in a video.

“I, Dez Bryant, do not like talking football with certain women. What is it that y’all don’t understand? It is what it is. That’s just my opinion. That’s me. That’s how I feel. I stand on it. If there’s a guy who didn’t know football, guess what? I’m not talking to him neither.”

The criticism was not over as Bryant responded to more posts on Christmas Eve as well.

“No woman or man who don’t know much about the game will ever tell me how to run a 3 step slant vs man or zone or a bang 8 vs man or zone without spending quality yrs towards the game. “For the record I was speaking to 1 woman because I felt like she didn’t know much and I felt she spoke outta place. I don’t like talking football with certain women about sports. ‘It was just baiting refs into calls’

0

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr railed against NBA officials on Monday night following the team’s 120-114 loss to the Denver Nuggets as he took issue with the free-throw disparity.

Nuggets star Nikola Jokic had 26 points and shot 18-of-18 from the free-throw line. Denver attempted 32 free throws in total as Golden State shot 23. It was those numbers that irked Kerr after the game.

“I have no problem with the officials themselves,” Kerr said. “I have a problem with the way we are legislating defense out of the game. That’s what we’re doing. The way we’re teaching officials, we’re just enabling to players to (fool) their way to the foul line. If I was a fan, I wouldn’t have wanted to watch the second half of that game. It was disgusting.

“It was just baiting refs into calls. But the refs have to make those calls because that’s how they’re taught.”

Kerr said that players are “smart in this league” and have been able to take advantage of how officials call games.

“When there’s physicality, it’s tough because it’s inconsistent at times on either side,” Warriors star Stephen Curry added. “A night like tonight, you feel like there’s physicality on one side and then kind of ticky-tack on the other and then they get into the bonus and it changes the (complexion) of the game. It’s not like we don’t foul. I’m not saying that.

“It was tough tonight, slowed the whole game down. (Jokic) made every free throw and changed the momentum, played into their hands.”

Nuggets guard Jamal Murray said Jokic was getting beat up down low.

“He gets fouled a lot. He gets beat up down there,” he said. “It’s hard to call every foul, I understand. They can only do so much.”

The mistake slowing down your connection and killing your phone

0

It’s a cozy evening, and you just started streaming your favorite show. But, as the plot thickens, your Wi-Fi takes an unexpected hiatus. Annoying, right?

Before you unplug your router, look at your smartphone. The culprit could be apps chowing down on precious bandwidth.

Only days left to win a new iPhone 15 (a $799 value)! Enter to win now!

SHOPPING UNDER SURVEILLANCE: HOW RETAILERS TRACK YOU & HOW TO BE INVISIBLE

What’s the big deal?

You’ve probably seen notifications you’re using too much data. Besides getting charged more, why does it really matter? Glad you asked.

  • Wi-Fi performance: Data hogs slow you down big time. Identifying and monitoring bandwidth-hungry apps on your iPhone or Android will improve your Wi-Fi speeds and reduce latency.
  • Limited plans: Not everyone has unlimited data. Keeping an eye on which apps are using your Wi-Fi could save you from surprise fees.
  • Not enough to go around: Smart home devices (think cameras or voice assistants) rely on a stable Wi-Fi connection. Managing bandwidth-intensive apps helps them run more smoothly, too. The more devices you have and rely on day to day, the more this matters.
  • Battery life: High-bandwidth apps can drain your Android or iPhone’s battery quickly. Catching them sooner might even extend your phone’s lifespan over the long run.

How to check

Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of how to detect those sneaky Wi-Fi bandits on your Android or iPhone.

For Android

  • Open the Settings app > Connections.
  • Tap Data usage followed by Wi-Fi data usage.

As I’m constantly reminded, steps vary depending on your phone. If that doesn’t work, search your settings for Wi-Fi or Data.

You’ll see each app and how much bandwidth it’s used over the last month. Android lets you go up to four months back for an even more detailed overview. Select the dates at the top of the screen, and voila!

EVERYDAY TECH HACKS: FROM PHONE SHORTCUTS TO WEBCAM MAGIC

For iPhone

While iOS doesn’t have a built-in feature to track Wi-Fi usage, there’s a workaround. You can monitor your mobile data usage for a glance as to which apps are most bandwidth-intensive.

  • Open the Settings app > Cellular.
  • Scroll down to view the apps.

You may not use heavier social networking apps or entertainment platforms while on your mobile data, so these might be hidden further below. Spotify, YouTube and Netflix are some of the main culprits!

What to do about it

Of course, you know to close the hungriest apps if they’re not in use and eating up too much bandwidth. There’s more you can do, too:

  • Content settings: Most apps have an internal setting that allows you to control the content you see. Turning down the resolution, disabling auto-play or changing the output to standard-quality images can lighten the load.
  • Auto downloads: Email and social media apps usually auto-download files when connected to the internet. You can turn this off.
  • Find alternatives: Some apps have an alternative data-efficient version, like Facebook Lite for Android. Sorry, Apple fans, but this one’s unavailable for you yet.

While you’re at it, do an app audit

Scroll through your apps and note which ones you rarely use or don’t use. Do you have two or three apps that perform the same function? How about the one you downloaded for a free trial membership years ago?

Your iPhone can help if you’re not sure where to start. To get a detailed view of your app activity and what you use most, go to Settings > Screen Time and select See All Activity.

If you’re on an Android, tap Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls > Dashboard to view screen times for each app.

My advice: Trim the fat. Your devices work better when they run lean.

New blood pressure procedure is ‘game-changing’ for people with uncontrolled hypertension

People with treatment-resistant hypertension could benefit from a new procedure that the FDA recently approved.

The minimally invasive procedure targets nerves near the kidneys to help control high blood pressure when medications fail to do so.

Dr. Samin Sharma, an interventional cardiologist and director of the Mount Sinai Cardiovascular Clinical Institute at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in New York City, performed the new procedure on a patient with uncontrolled hypertension earlier this month.

REDUCING SALT INTAKE BY JUST 1 TEASPOON A DAY HAS SAME EFFECT AS BLOOD PRESSURE MEDS, STUDY FINDS

“When the device came, we said, ‘We are going to try it on you,’” Sharma told Fox News Digital.

“He said yes and was very happy.”

Here’s how it works

The treatment uses a device that ablates the overstimulated sympathetic nerves near the kidneys, Sharma said.

It can help control the patient’s blood pressure for at least five years, possibly preventing life-threatening events such as heart attack, stroke, brain bleeds and kidney failure.

“Renal denervation continues to be an experimental therapy that has shown some promise as a proof of concept.”

Two devices — Medtronic’s Symplicity Spyral Renal Denervation system and Recor Medical’s Paradise Ultrasound Renal Denervation system — have received FDA approval for this treatment as of the end of December 2023.

The device is indicated “to reduce blood pressure as an adjunctive treatment in patients with hypertension in whom lifestyle modifications and antihypertensive medications do not adequately control blood pressure,” according to the FDA’s approval statement.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE A CONCERN WORLDWIDE, LEADING TO DEATH, STROKE, HEART ATTACK: HOW TO STOP A ‘SILENT KILLER’

The procedure is intended for individuals who do not show blockage of the kidney arteries, Sharma noted.

During the one-hour procedure, interventional cardiologists insert a thin tube into the renal artery, which sends sound waves or radiofrequency energy that targets and ablates the overactive sympathetic nerves that are connected to the kidney, Sharma told Fox News Digital.

Doctors at Mt. Sinai

The patient’s blood pressure after the procedure is now averaging 135/85 — the lowest it has been in many years. Mount Sinai is the only hospital in New York — and one of the few places in the country — to perform this “game-changing” procedure. (Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital)

“You kind of destroy the nerve endings,” the doctor said.

This calms the nerves’ excessive activity — which mitigates blood pressure to the brain.

Studies have shown that this ablation technique helps to lower systolic (the top number) and diastolic (the bottom number) blood pressure readings in individuals for months or even years.

WANT A MORE ACCURATE BLOOD PRESSURE READING? TRY LYING DOWN WHEN IT’S TAKEN, NEW STUDY SUGGESTS

There is most likely no negative impact on the kidneys, Sharma told Fox News Digital.

As with any procedure, however, there are some risks involved.

One potential risk is that an artery is damaged during the procedure.

Blood pressure

“Hypertension is the most frequent modifiable risk factor for heart disease, and blood pressure control in our country is not where it needs to be,” a doctor told Fox News Digital.  (iStock)

“Damage can occur in about one in 500 cases,” Sharma said.

“We don’t expect this to happen, but that is a [potential] complication.”

Why results have been life-changing

On Dec. 4, Sharma and his team of doctors at Mount Sinai performed the procedure on Adit Dhawan, 44.

Dhawan, a married father who lives on Long Island, New York, spoke to Fox News Digital about the experience.

SKIPPING THE SALT CAN REDUCE HEART DISEASE RISK BY ALMOST 20%, STUDY FINDS: ‘KNOW WHAT YOU ARE CONSUMING’

Ever since he was diagnosed with high blood pressure at age 19, he’d taken several different medications over the decades, none of which helped.

Dhawan also followed a relatively healthy diet and exercised regularly.

Despite these efforts, his blood pressure has averaged 150/90-100 mm Hg since he was in his twenties, he told Fox News Digital.

A normal blood pressure reading is between 110-120/70-80 mm Hg, according to medical experts.

A few months ago, when Dhawan took the measurement at home, the result was even higher than what he typically saw.

“It was super high — 170/100. That’s when I freaked out,” he said.

When he sought Sharman’s help, the doctor told Dhawan about the new procedure — and he was eager to give it a try.

A SINGLE ALCOHOLIC DRINK PER DAY COULD RAISE BLOOD PRESSURE, SAYS STUDY

After the procedure, which Dhawan described as “not bad,” he took Tylenol for some mild soreness that lasted for about three days.

Now, just three weeks later, he is already seeing the benefits of the procedure. Dhawan is already taking far fewer blood pressure medications and is back to running and exercising, he told Fox News Digital.

“I’m really glad, because high blood pressure is a silent killer,” he said. “I’m very happy. Everything is fine. All my vitals are great.”

Based on trials and short-term follow-up, a doctor noted that the procedure seems to provide modest benefit in lowering blood pressure. (iStock)

Dhawan’s blood pressure is now averaging 135/85 — the lowest it has been in many years.

Mount Sinai is the only hospital in New York — and one of the few places in the country — to perform this “game-changing” procedure, according to a press release.

What doctors are saying

Several physicians not involved with Dhawan’s case spoke to Fox News Digital about the new treatment for uncontrolled hypertension.

“In high-quality randomized studies, the renal denervation procedure has been shown to improve blood pressure control … in patients with difficult-to-control blood pressure and those with high blood pressure who are on one or two medications,” said Dr. Manesh R. Patel, M.D., chief of cardiology and co-director of the Duke Heart Center at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

MEDICAL RESEARCH ON CELLPHONE USE SAYS CHATTING FOR THIS AMOUNT OF TIME PER WEEK CAN RAISE BLOOD PRESSURE RISK

As Patel told Fox News Digital, he is excited that there’s now another therapy available for patients with high blood pressure.

“Hypertension is the most frequent modifiable risk factor for heart disease, and blood pressure control in our country is not where it needs to be,” the doctor told Fox News Digital.

“Therefore, having a procedure to support control, on top of medications, is an important step forward.”

Medtronic

Two devices — Medtronic’s Symplicity Spyral Renal Denervation system and Recor Medical’s Paradise Ultrasound Renal Denervation system — both received FDA approval for this treatment as of the end of December 2023. (AP Images)

When asked about concerns regarding the procedure’s potential effect on the kidneys, Patel said, “The studies done to date have shown the renal denervation procedure has been well-tolerated and there has been a low risk of causing any damage.”

Dr. Steven Potter, M.D., an experienced kidney and pancreas transplant surgeon at Medstar Georgetown Transplant Institute in Washington, D.C., also commented on the newly approved procedure.

“The global costs of hypertension are enormous, and innovative treatment options could prove to hold great value,” Potter told Fox News Digital.

“At this point, renal denervation continues to be an experimental therapy that has shown some promise as a proof of concept.”

Based on trials and short-term follow-up, Potter noted that the procedure seems to provide modest benefit in lowering blood pressure, although “the results of studies have been conflicting, with some showing significant benefit and others failing to do so.”
