‘Feel like that brother needs help’

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green may be facing another suspension.

The four-time NBA champion was ejected Tuesday night after striking Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in the face while the two players battled for position in the third quarter.

Green apologized to Nurkic while speaking with reporters after the game, saying he was trying to sell the call.

“He was pulling my hip and I was swinging away to sell the call,” the Warriors star explained after the game. “I made contact with him. As you know, I’m not one to apologize for things I meant to do, but I do apologize to Jusuf, because I didn’t intend to hit him.”

Nurkic had a different take.

“What’s going on him, I don’t know,” Nurkic said. “Personally, I feel like that brother needs help. I’m glad he didn’t try to choke me… That had nothing to do with basketball. I’m just out there trying to play basketball.”

Nurkic was seemingly referencing Green’s five-game suspension earlier this season after the four-time All-Star put Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert into a chokehold.

Tuesday was the 18th time that Green had been ejected in his 12-year NBA career.

“It just looked like a reckless, dangerous play,” Suns coach Frank Vogel said. “I’m sensitive to our guys getting hit on plays like that. I didn’t like it. The refs did what they had to do. The league will do what they have to do.”

How two of the biggest tech companies are secretly helping governments spy on your smartphone

0

Two of the biggest tech companies have confirmed the government and foreign agencies can spy on you using your smartphone.

And they’re likely helping.

Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden wrote a letter to the Justice Department last Wednesday revealing unidentified foreign governments are asking Apple and Google for push notification data on you.

That data can contain your personal information.

According to a Reuters report, the U.S. government is likely spying on you, too. They spoke to a source who they say is close to the subject. That unnamed source claims federal agencies have asked both companies for push notification metadata.

How Apple and Google are using push notifications to spy on you

If you own a smartphone, you have probably received a push notification. It’s the alert you receive on your phone when you get a text message, a new email or an update from your favorite mobile game.

10 SIMPLE STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR SMARTPHONE’S SECURITY AND PRIVACY

Those push notifications contain data. That data can tell Apple or Google who’s receiving the notification, what app is sending it, and what device the user has. Some of the metadata found in push notifications can even tell you the contents of a text message.

Foreign entities and some U.S. agencies can then request that data. When Wyden asked, both companies said they were under a gag order and could not discuss information relating to push notification data.

What Apple and Google are doing to be more transparent

Both Apple and Google have taken several steps to address the major security and privacy concerns in Wyden’s letter.

Apple has since updated its law enforcement guidelines and tells the public how push notification data can be used to breach your security.

According to the guidelines, law enforcement must obtain a judge’s approval in order to request this information. Also, Apple will begin to break out the requests for push notifications they have received in its next Transparency Report.

We contacted Apple and received this statement from a company spokesperson.

“Apple is committed to transparency and we have long been a supporter of efforts to ensure that providers are able to disclose as much information as possible to their users. In this case, the federal government prohibited us from sharing any information and now that this method has become public we are updating our transparency reporting to detail these kinds of requests.”

FROM ‘BARBENHEIMER’ TO ‘BIBIMBAP’: GOOGLE REVEALS TOP SEARCHES OF 2023

As far as Google, the company hasn’t done anything specific since Senator Wyden’s letter came out, but it does have tools to monitor your data. First, it’s important to note, for the most part, you would probably need a non-disclosure order to receive data about an individual or even a court order.

Google does offer a public transparency report that’s more all-encompassing. Rather than individual statistics about data requests, it gives an overarching view. We reached out to Google, and a spokesperson had this to say,

“We were the first major company to publish a public transparency report sharing the number and types of government requests for user data we receive, including the requests referred to by Senator Wyden. We share the Senator’s commitment to keeping users informed about these requests.”

How to keep yourself safe

While Google and Apple have tools and safeguards to help make sure your data stays private, there are steps you can take to stop your push notification data from being shared. Namely, you can turn off push notifications. Apple and Google can’t share information they don’t have.

What if I choose to allow push notifications?

Some of you may still choose to allow push notifications for various reasons, such as convenience, personalization, or engagement. However, you should be aware of the potential risks of sharing your data. To protect yourself, you can take some measures, such as:

  • Reviewing the privacy policies and permissions of the apps and services you use, and opting out of any data collection or sharing that you are not comfortable with.
  • Limiting the number and frequency of push notifications you receive, and deleting or disabling any apps or services that you do not use or trust.

Additional data protection measures

While the methods mentioned above can help protect your data, they are not foolproof. If you are worried, and you should be, that Google and Apple are secretly helping governments spy on your smartphone, here are some additional steps you can take to protect your data and privacy. However, none of these methods are foolproof or guaranteed to work, and some of them may have drawbacks or limitations.

1) Use privacy tools and practices. One way to protect yourself is to use privacy tools and practices that can help you reduce or hide your digital footprint and identity. For example, you could use a virtual private network (VPN), which can mask your IP address and location. It can also anonymize your online activity and traffic. However, these tools and practices may not be enough to protect you from the data collection of Google and Apple. See my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

2) Use end-to-end encrypted messaging apps such as Signal or Telegram to communicate securely with your contacts. These apps do not store your messages on their servers and do not share your metadata with anyone. However, encryption does not protect the metadata of your calls, such as phone numbers, dates, times, durations, and locations, which can still be collected and analyzed. Encryption also depends on the trustworthiness and security of the app and its provider.

3) Use a password manager to create and store strong and unique passwords for your online accounts. This can prevent hackers from accessing your accounts with stolen or guessed passwords.

4) You should also enable two-factor authentication whenever possible to add an extra layer of security.

5) Review your app permissions and privacy settings regularly and limit the access that apps have to your personal data, location, camera, microphone, etc. You can also delete any apps that you do not use or trust.

6) Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments in emails or messages that could contain malware or phishing attempts. You should also update your software and apps regularly to fix any security vulnerabilities.

7) Have good antivirus software actively running on all your devices. This will alert you of any malware in your system, warn you against clicking on any malicious links in phishing emails, and ultimately protect you from being hacked. Get my picks for the best 2023 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

Taking these steps can help enhance your data privacy and security in the face of potential surveillance by tech giants like Apple and Google.

How to check if your data has been compromised on the dark web

With news emerging that both Apple and Google have been cooperating with governments and foreign agencies to access sensitive user data through smartphones, it’s never been more critical to be vigilant about your online privacy. While the extent of this surveillance remains unclear, one alarming detail has become apparent: push notification data, potentially containing your personal information, may be compromised.

These developments highlight the importance of taking proactive measures to protect your digital footprint. To do so, you can go to haveibeenpwned.com and enter your email address into the search bar. The website will search to see what data of yours is out there and display if there were data breaches associated with your email address on various sites. You may have even received an email from the website already saying that some of your data was stolen, and you should look into this immediately if that is the case.

Kurt’s key takeaways

The fact that two of the biggest names in tech are potentially helping the government keep track of you is startling. But when you start to consider foreign entities might be using that same information to spy on you, it gets even more frightening. It’s important to remember that there’s no right to privacy. So it’s up to you to make sure your data stays safe.

The NFL rival that started with a shutout in 1921

0

The rivalry between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears is a story that includes shutouts, ejections, cheeseheads and champions.

Born from a 20-0 win in 1921, and further fueled by the first ejection in NFL history, the Packers and Bears remain one of the oldest rivalries in professional football.

Why are the Packers and Bears rivals?

The rivalry began in the earliest years of the NFL. The two teams first went head-to-head on Nov. 27, 1921. The Chicago Bears, which were named the Staleys at the time, beat the Packers 20-0 in their first matchup.

Shutting out a team during the first competition against one another will naturally brew a rival, so it’s no wonder the two teams are at odds. And a few years later, on Nov. 23, 1924, the rivalry deepened when the first ever NFL ejection occurred.

The Bears’ end Frank Hanny and Packers’ tackle Tillie Voss were both ejected from the game when punches were thrown. In addition to these two pivotal moments instigating the teams, they are both part of the NFC North.

Who has won more Super Bowls between the Packers and Bears?

In terms of Super Bowl wins, the Packers have a fairly large lead over the Bears.

So far, the franchise has won four Super Bowls, including the first two in the history of the NFL. In 1966, the Packers beat Kansas City in the first ever Super Bowl and in 1968 they defeated the Oakland Raiders. The championship trophy was named after the Packers coach, Vince Lombardi, who led the Packers win the championships.

The Packers also won the Super Bowl in 1997 and again in 2011. The Bears, however, have secured one Super Bowl for their franchise, which was won in 1986 against the New England Patriots.

SUPER BOWL 2023: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE GAME

How many times have the Packers beat the Bears?

At the start of the rivalry, the Bears were the stronger of the two teams. In more recent years, the Packers have dominated the Bears offense and defense. The teams have met on the field over 200 times, and the Packers have won the last nine straight games against the Bears since the end of 2023.

“The Bears haven’t been very good in the last ten years,” said lifetime Packers fan, Bob Hird, to Fox News Digital. “They haven’t had a lot of memorable games.”

The Bears only secured five wins against Packers former quarterback Aaron Rodgers during his time with the organization.

“I do look forward to the Bears games every year, though, because they’re normally fun, cold weather, Midwest games that appeal to the football fan in me,” Hird said. “I love the history of the rival, because you can feel the energy is different from the teams and in the stands for Bears vs. Packers games.”

What are “cheeseheads?”

“Cheeseheads” are the dedicated fans of the Packers. They often show up to a packed Lambeau Field wearing cheese hats atop their heads while they cheer on their team.

Bears fans are also dedicated to their NFL team, as they regularly pack the Solider Field parking lots with all the well-known football fixings during pre-game tailgates. Fans erupt for the Bears fight song, “Bear Down, Chicago Bears,” can often be heard ringing throughout the stadium.

Pope Francis says he will not be buried in Vatican, has prepared a grave in Basilica of St. Mary Major

0

Pope Francis announced in a recent interview that he plans to be buried outside the Vatican.

The pontiff told Mexican broadcaster Televisa’s N+ news service that he has made arrangements to be buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.

“The place is already prepared,” Pope Francis told the outlet, saying that the basilica where he prays regularly before foreign trips is his “great devotion.”

While the pope says he is recovering from his bout with severe bronchitis, he notes that his capabilities are declining with old age.

“It is true that all journeys are now rethought,” Pope Francis told the outlet regarding overseas trips. “If they’re close by, they can be done. If they’re farther away, they are rethought. There are limits.”

He has no plans to retire like his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, reiterating his belief that the papacy is intended to be a position held until death — but says he waits for God to decide when his reign should end.

POPE FRANCIS SAYS ‘LURE OF CORRUPTION’ IS CONSTANT THREAT IN THE VATICAN

“I ask the Lord to say ‘enough,’ at some point, but when he wants me to,” Pope Francis said.

Pontiffs do not have a requirement for burial location — but since the death of St. Pope Pius X in 1914, all popes have been buried in the grotto under St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

For centuries, St. Peter’s Basilica has been the most common choice for the internment of deceased popes, but many pontiffs have chosen churches or catacombs with which they have a more personal connection.

The Basilica of St. Mary Major has been a spiritual home for Pope Francis since the beginning of his pontificate.

He has stopped at the Basilica before and after most major apostolic journeys, as well as after each stint in the hospital.

The basilica, which dates back sixteen centuries, features the Salus Populi Romani — an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus believed to be from the 6th century.

Seven popes are currently buried in the basilica.

‘Don’t take your ex girlfriend back’

Former NFL star Dez Bryant offered Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Will Levis some unsolicited dating advice following his comeback win over the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.

The former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver wrote on X that Levis should not consider rekindling a relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Gia Duddy, and should be focused on becoming Tennessee’s franchise quarterback.

“She got endorsements sitting next to you on draft night. I remember. She wasted no time making herself the priority after going viral. You got a chance to be a franchise QB make it a priority! Great win champ!”

Duddy gained notoriety earlier this year as she sat with Levis in the NFL Draft green room as he waited for his name to be called. It never happened in the first round, though the Titans pulled the trigger in the second round with the 33rd overall pick on the signal caller out of Kentucky.

The two apparently broke up over the course of the next few months. She sparked new speculation when she posted a “breakup” video on her TikTok page last month.

Florida AG launches probe into CFP after Florida State snub: ‘Decision reeks of partiality’

0

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee is under investigation in Florida over its decision to keep the Florida State Seminoles out of the four-team field, state Attorney General Ashley Moody said on Tuesday.

Florida State finished the season 13-0 and, despite that, were not included in the playoffs. Alabama and Texas – each team that had one loss during the season – hopped over the Seminoles. CFP officials pointed to the team’s make-up as it stood now as the reason why the team was snubbed.

Moody said the state is seeking to determine whether any anticompetitive conduct was involved in keeping Florida State out of the playoffs. Officials are also seeking communications from the SEC, ACC, NCAA, ESPN, Group of Five Conferences and Power Five Conferences.

“I’m a lifelong Gator, but I’m also the Florida attorney general, and I know injustice when I see it,” she said in a video posted on X. “No rational person or college football fan can look at this situation and not question the result. The NCAA, conferences and the College Football Playoff committee are subject to antitrust laws.

“My office is launching an investigation to examine if the committee was involved in any anticompetitive conduct. As it stands, the committee’s decision reeks of partiality, so we are demanding answers — not only for FSU, but for all schools, teams and fans of college football. In Florida, merit matters. If it’s attention they were looking for, the committee certainly has our attention now.”

The Committee said it had yet to receive anything from the attorney general.

“We will carefully review this demand for information, but it sure seems to be an overly aggressive reaction to a college football ranking in which some fans somewhere were bound to be disappointed,” College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said in a statement, via ESPN.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., welcomed Moody’s investigation.

Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel sent hilarious text message to Peyton Manning

0

Mike McDaniel is in his second year as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. The franchise has benefited from McDaniel’s presence, as the team advanced to the playoffs last year and is on pace to return to the postseason this year.

McDaniel, who spent multiple years under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, has developed one of the most efficient and exciting offenses in the NFL. The coach has also been a part of multiple viral moments during his time at the helm. In November, McDaniel made an unprompted comment about his height as he spoke to reporters during a press conference saying, “I’m bigger in person, you’re right.”

Earlier in the season, McDaniel appeared to have some fun by breaking into a sprint toward the tunnel at halftime of a game against the New England Patriots. Now, a hilarious text exchange between McDaniel and NFL legend Peyton Manning is making headlines.

During this week’s edition of ESPN’s alternate broadcast, the “ManningCast,” a screenshot of McDaniel’s text message to Manning was put on display.

The screenshot showed a text from Manning to McDaniel in which the two-time Super Bowl winner asked if the coach could set aside a few minutes to chat about the Week 14 game between the Dolphins and Tennessee Titans. Manning initially contacted McDaniel as part of his preparation for the matchup between the two AFC teams.

McDaniel responded by saying, “Um f— yes you’re f—ing Payton manning bro.”

Peyton pointed out McDaniel’s typo to his brother and New York Giants legend Eli Manning.

“The reaction was kind of mixed, Eli. He seemed excited, yet he spelled my name wrong.”

The Manning brothers also jokingly questioned whether McDaniel was confusing Peyton for a different “Payton.” Former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, currently coaches one of Manning’s former teams, the Denver Broncos.

The Dolphins ultimately suffered a one-point loss to the Titans. However, Miami’s playoff hopes remain alive as the team still sit in the top spot in the AFC East division.

The Dolphins remain home in Week 15 as they host the Jets. New York is coming off a surprising win over the Houston Texans. Zach Wilson has been under fire this season, but this past Sunday, he delivered arguably the best performance of his career. The third-year quarterback threw for 301 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in a blowout win at MetLife Stadium.Â
