Travis Kelce’s mom explains why Chiefs star has taken game to ‘new level’ amid Taylor Swift relationship

0

Travis Kelce was a star for the Kansas City Chiefs, a two-time Super Bowl champion, before he began dating Taylor Swift. But even he admitted the extra attention on him from paparazzi and millions of others has been an adjustment.

Despite all the off-the-field spotlight, Kelce’s production on the field has shined bright.

His mother, Donna Kelce, who has become a household name this year after her sons – the elder is Jason Kelce of the Philadelphia Eagles – reached the Super Bowl, isn’t surprised that Travis has taken the added pressure in stride.

“Travis is the type of individual where if you’re going to say that he’s not good enough, or that he’ll not be able to handle it, it just pushes him more,” Donna Kelce told Fox News Digital while discussing her new partnership with Barefoot Wines, the official wine sponsor of the NFL. “It’s a fire within him to prove everyone wrong.

“Because there were some people saying he’s not going to be able to handle the season, he’s not going to be a good football player. But it turns out that the more that he is pushed or challenged, he takes it to a new level.”

There was a group that believed Kelce’s relationship with Swift would impact how he plays for the Chiefs, but the 34-year-old is enjoying quite the season thus far, even with Kansas City dropping its latest game against the Denver Broncos

No, Swift wasn’t present for this one, and the Chiefs certainly heard it from fans in the stands and on social media. The Broncos even took a jab at the relationship when they played Swift’s songs over the loudspeakers at Highmark Stadium in Denver after their 24-9 victory.

But Kelce still had a decent day with 58 yards on six catches (nine targets). The week prior, he exploded against their AFC West-rival Los Angeles Chargers, totaling 179 yards (second-most of his career) on 12 catches with a touchdown.

Even after a down week by his standards, Kelce is leading all tight ends in the NFL in receiving yards (583) and receptions (54), and is tied second in touchdowns (4). He’s done so while also dealing with injuries, including a knee bone bruise that led to him missing Week 1’s opener against the Detroit Lions.

Kelce admitted it’s been taking some getting used to with the extra media attention. He should also be aware that his fans have skyrocketed due to the relationship, too, as “Swifties” collectively want Kelce to perform well each week.

His social media has been seeing tremendous gains in followers because of his relationship, too. Kelce gained over 1.1 million followers on Instagram since Swift’s first appearance at a Chiefs game – Kansas City’s 41-10 beatdown of the Chicago Bears. The number continues to grow.

Again, Kelce isn’t new to stardom. But there are levels to being a celebrity, and Swift’s notoriety was certainly above his prior to them becoming an item.

But that hasn’t stopped Kelce from dominating on the gridiron while enjoying himself off it. And coming from his mother, who has seen him face adversity and challenge all his life, it’s no surprise he continues to impact the Chiefs on a weekly basis.

Fox Sports’ Tim Brando weighs in after first College Football Playoff rankings

0

When the College Football Playoff committee released the first of six rankings Tuesday, some were surprised to see which program topped the list.

Ohio State is the No. 1 team in the CFP ranking with Georgia, Michigan and Florida State rounding out the top four.

The Bulldogs, who have been the No. 1 team in The Associated Press Top 25 for 20 consecutive weeks, were relegated to the second spot in the only poll that matters.

The committee clearly took strength of schedule into consideration for the first ranking of the year, and Ohio State’s two wins over top-10 opponents were more impressive than Georgia’s less-than-impressive schedule and lone win over an AP Top 25 opponent in No. 20 Kentucky.

“They had the big win at Notre Dame, the win over Penn State, top-5 defense,” CFP Chairman Boo Corrigan said, according to Sporting News. “They have difference makers on offense across the board. Marvin Harrison is elite. We came to the conclusion that they are No. 1.”

Ohio State’s spot at the top was a bit of a surprise to those who believed Georgia, or even Michigan, should get top billing.

Tim Brando, a Fox Sports college football play-by-play man, was not surprised by the results of the first rankings of the year.

“Nothing is going to change with the College Football committee as long as we have four teams,” Brando told Fox News Digital in a phone interview. “They will gerrymander the process because they’re human beings. It’s easy to use strength of schedule in the very first College Football Playoff standings. And they’ll always use it there.

“Ohio State has played Notre Dame nonconference and does have a win recently over Penn State. Their body of work clearly means that they should be No. 1.”

While Brando understands the committee using Ohio State’s strength of schedule to rank it first after beating two top-10 schools, he pointed to the same approach not being used for ranking Florida State, which defeated No. 5 LSU in Week 1 and No. 16 Duke.

HEISMAN TROPHY POWER RANKINGS: MARVIN HARRISON JR CONTINUES CLIMB

“That same principle of strength of schedule that applies to Ohio State does not apply to Florida State. They’ve been bad now for a number of years. So, forget that they played LSU nonconference. That doesn’t matter quite as much,” Brando said with a chuckle.

“They will almost always, the first two or three weeks of the poll coming out, they will always make it look good to make it look as though they are taking all these benign and nebulous paragraphs that they have in their very vague mission statement with the playoff and say, ‘We’re utilizing all of these.’ But they’ll use them for some schools but not others. And it does boggle the minds of those that haven’t followed it religiously like I have.”

“One thing you can be rest assured is that, at the end, they will always err on the side of the brand name. So, the bigger the name of the school, the bigger the television draw, the more likely that team gets the benefit of the doubt. Without question,” Brando said while pointing to why college football teams needs to go to a 12-team and eventually a 16-team playoff.

Kirby Smart looks on field

As far as Georgia, which has only played one ranked team through the first nine weeks of the season, the next three weeks against Missouri, Ole Miss and Tennessee will be the toughest stretch of the year for Kirby Smart’s squad.

“Georgia has not been tested,” Brando said of the Bulldogs. “The SEC is not up and down as good a league this year as it’s been in the past. Now, that’s sort of aided and abetted Georgia to some extent.

“I can’t get that Auburn game out of my mind,” Brando said of Georgia’s close win on the road over an Auburn team that’s now 4-4. “Played at their place and without Brock Bowers and his own individual efforts that day, they don’t win that game. And Bowers is their No. 1 playmaker. And now he’s gone for the next three to four weeks. They don’t have the same receiving corps they had a year ago.

“I do think Carson Beck has improved mightily. I’m impressed with him. I wasn’t terribly impressed until those wins against Kentucky, especially, and Florida. I thought he played a lot better in those two games.

Brando has Michigan ahead of the Bulldogs due to what he says is Georgia playing down to the level of its opponents, at least in the early part of the season.

“In my mind, they’ve played not to their own standards but to the standards of their opposition,” Brando told Fox News Digital. “And that’s why I’ve had Michigan even with their bad schedule. And their schedule is equally bad. It’s every bit as bad as Georgia’s, but Michigan’s point differential in their games is 38 points. That blows away their nearest competitor to point differential in the outcomes of their games.

“So, you have to say Michigan has played to a standard that they have set, not what their opposition has set,” Brando said, adding that Michigan has not been pushed in games like Georgia has, at least early in the year.

Week 10 of the college football season is a loaded slate with five matchups between Top 25 teams.

NFL Week 9 preview: AFC’s top teams meet in Germany, Damar Hamlin returns to Cincy and more to know

0

When Week 9 concludes, the NFL will reach its 2023 season midpoint.

Two of the top teams in the AFC will square off in Europe, and the Philadelphia Eagles hope to gain a bigger advantage in the NFC playoff race as they host the rival Dallas Cowboys Sunday afternoon.

There are plenty of two-loss and three-loss teams that need a victory to improve their hopes of making the postseason too.

Read below for the interesting notes going into the weekend.

All eyes on Germany

There is a lot of intrigue in the matchup between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs. Aside from the teams being among the best in the NFL, Tyreek Hill goes up against his former team with which he won his first Super Bowl ring.

It’s also the second time the NFL has hosted a game in Germany. While some players may not like traveling to and from the East Coast and Europe, fans will flock to Frankfurt Stadium and pack the house for the showdown. The game will kick off at 9:30 a.m. ET and can be seen on NFL Network.

More history for KC

The Chiefs are playing to win, but there will be more on the line when the two teams play.

Patrick Mahomes could move up the list for most games with at least two touchdown passes by a player in his first seven NFL seasons should he toss two touchdowns. Mahomes would tie Peyton Manning for accomplishing that feat in 64 games. Dan Marino has the record at 65 games.

Mahomes and Travis Kelce could tie Drew Bree and Jimmy Graham for third-most regular-season touchdowns by a quarterback and tight end combo. Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski have the record with 90.

Winning means everything

There are 13 teams entering Week 9 with two or three losses on the season. Three of the teams are on bye weeks, which means 10 will be vying for big wins. NFL Research broke down the possibility of teams with two or three losses making the playoffs through the ninth week of the season.

STEELERS LEGEND HINES WARD TALKS MATT CANADA, HAS POTENTIAL REMEDY FOR STRUGGLING OFFENSE

About 84% of teams with two losses through Week 9 made the playoffs since 1990. About 63% of teams made the playoffs with three wins through Week 9. Those who pick up the fourth loss of the season through Week 9 only have a 33% of making the playoffs.

It is a crucial week for a lot of teams.

Damar Hamlin returns to Cincy

The Buffalo Bills will play the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday night in what will be an emotional return for everyone. Damar Hamlin is expected to be with the Bills as they head to Cincinnati.

It will be his first time back to the stadium since his cardiac arrest in January at the end of the 2022 season.

“I don’t know what to expect,” he acknowledged this week, according the New York Post. “You know, this is unique to me as well. All I know is I’m walking in with courage, I’m walking in with strength and I’m walking in with my brothers. You know, and I’m walking in with my mom, my dad, my family. And I’m walking into, you know, an environment of people that supported me the entire time.

“It’s a lot of love. I can’t wait to receive it and give it and show my gratitude, but ultimately we’re going up there to get a win.”

Will L-Jax’s dominance continue?

Lamar Jackson vs Cardinals

Lamar Jackson winced at the notion he was 17-1 against NFC opponents in his career.

“It’s not about NFC or AFC,” Jackson told reporters. “I’m trying to win regardless. I don’t even want to put that in my head or let you finish that question. We’re good.”

Baltimore hosts the Seattle Seahawks this weekend. Both teams are on top of their respective divisions. But it definitely won’t be an easy game for Jackson. Seattle is 11th in points allowed and 16th in yards allowed. The team also acquired Leonard Williams from the New York Giants before the trade deadline.

It will be interesting to see whether Jackson will be able to continue his dominance over the NFC.

Vikings find a silver lining

It’s been a tough season for the Minnesota Vikings as they look to navigate the road ahead without Kirk Cousins. Justin Jefferson is also out, which means — at least in Week 9 — the offense will run through Jaran Hall and Jordan Addison.

Addison has been a great complement to Jefferson and his numbers show it. He has 36 catches for 482 yards and seven touchdowns. With a touchdown catch Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, Addison will become the first player since 1982 to record at least eight touchdown catches in his first nine games.

NFL Research says he would be the seventh player in history to do it.

Puka Nacua vs the Colts

Puka Nacua came on strong in the beginning of the year with the Los Angeles Rams. While some of the attention may have dipped, he’s still moving up the rankings among first-year players.

Nacua could surpass Saquon Barkley for the most receptions by a player in his first nine games in the NFL and potentially surpass Marques Colston for the most receiving yards by a player in his first nine games.

Nacua enters Week 9 with 61 catches for 795 yards. He is one catch behind Barkley and 74 yards behind Colston.

There are four teams who have a bye week this week — the Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ohio State legend Eddie George offers interesting take on Michigan sign-stealing scandal

0

Eddie George, a former Ohio State star who won the Heisman Trophy in 1995, talked Thursday about the latest development in the Michigan football sign-stealing scandal that has captured the attention of the sports world.

Suspended Michigan assistant Connor Stalions was accused this week of appearing on the sideline of a Central Michigan game when it played Michigan State earlier this year.

Multiple reports pointed to photos and videos of a man wearing sunglasses on the sidelines at the game.

The Central Michigan-Michigan State game was played Sept. 1, and the Wolverines routed the Spartans 49-0 Oct. 21. Central Michigan was looking into whether it was Stalions on the sideline, The Athletic reported.

“I think that’s a major problem. If that holds true, then there needs to be some repercussions for that,” George, the head coach of Tennessee State, told OutKick’s “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich.”

“But at the end of the day, I understand you’re trying to get a competitive edge. You’re trying to find something on Saturdays that you can figure out how to put your team in the best possible position to win. From Michigan’s perspective, they’re gonna push the envelope, and I think they’re gonna do what they’re gonna do to try and get a victory some way somehow.”

LOU HOLTZ SLAMS MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SIGN-STEALING SCANDAL: ‘I FIND IT DEPLORABLE’

George made clear that even if signs are being stolen, teams still have to execute.

“You can get the signs, you can try to steal signs. But you still have to execute,” George said. “You can know when a team is gonna run. You still have to stop it. And that’s kinda how it’s always been. I’ve been on teams where we told the defense we’re gonna run right here, and we’d impose our will on that team. You still gotta get it done.

“But I think now — as you uncover this whole ordeal with the coach being on the sideline and posing as another assistant coach for another team — I think that’s an issue.”

It’s unclear what’s going to happen with Michigan and whether it receives any punishment during the year. The Associated Press reported that Big Ten coaches are pushing for the conference to punish the Wolverines.

Ripple to power Georgia’s central bank digital currency, the digital lari

0

The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) has selected blockchain payments network Ripple Labs as the official technology partner for developing digital lari, its central bank digital currency (CBDC) project.

Ripple said in a  statement that the partnership will encompass the implementation and deployment of the Digital Lari pilot initiative through the Ripple CBDC Platform. The National Bank of Georgia will utilize this innovative CBDC platform to evaluate potential applications of the Digital Lari, determining its advantages to the government sector, enterprises, and individual retail users.

Before being designated as NBG’s technology partner, Ripple underwent a thorough and meticulous selection procedure. In September, the National Bank of Georgia disclosed its intentions to advance its CBDC project by introducing a Limited Access Live Pilot Environment. Consequently, it opted to select a sole technology collaborator for the initiative.

In the initial process stage, the National Bank of Georgia thoughtfully chose nine firms for their technological prowess, maturity, capability, relevant background, and eagerness to participate in the practical assessment. Among these, Ripple was included alongside notable entities such as AUGENTIC GmbH, Bitt Inc., Broxus Holdings Ltd., Currency Network Ltd., DCM Corp Limited, and others.

Ultimately, Ripple was the preferred protocol for the Digital Lari initiative. The selection committee considered various factors, including a profound comprehension of the project’s objectives, its potential applications, and a solid dedication to the project’s triumph, as stated in NBG’s announcement.

In July, Ripple received recognition from Currency Research for its contributions to Digital Currency Advancement and Best Sustainability Initiative, particularly for its role in fostering innovation in the realm of CBDCs.

Before the partnership with the NBG for the Digital Lari initiative, Ripple had proactively aligned itself with organizations seeking to delve into CBDC implementations. Ripple previously joined forces with Colombia’s Central Bank, Banco de la República, to investigate blockchain technology applications in its Digital Peso pilot, leveraging the Ripple CBDC Platform.
