The Atlanta Falcons and head coach Arthur Smith parted ways early Monday after the team suffered a blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints during the 2023 season finale.

Smith had been the head coach for the last three seasons as he replaced Dan Quinn, who was let go in the middle of the 2020 season. Smith was an offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans but could never get the Falcons into the top 10 in points scored or yards gained over his coaching tenure.

Atlanta will get to start fresh in the 2024 hiring cycle.

“Decisions like this are never easy and they never feel good,” team owner Arthur Blank said in a statement. “We have profound respect for Coach Smith and appreciate all the hard work and dedication he has put into the Falcons over the last three years.

“He has been part of building a good culture in our football team, but the results on the field have not met our expectations. After significant thought and reflection, we have determined the best way forward for our team is new leadership in the head coaching position.”

As Smith becomes the first casualty of what is known as Black Monday around the NFL, he is hardly the first coach to be let go this season.

His tenure ended hours after he blew up at Saints head coach Dennis Allen after the Saints scored a meaningless touchdown with about a minute left in the game.

Two hikers trekking across the Italian Alps on snowshoes were killed when an avalanche crashed down the slope near the border with Switzerland on Sunday, rescue officials said.

The avalanche was triggered around noon at an elevation of 7,200 feet (2,200 meters) in the Formazza valley in the Piedmont region, Italian Alpine rescue group CNSAS said in a statement.

The body of one snowshoe hiker was found buried in the snow while the other body was recovered from a lake after the force of the avalanche swept it down the slope, according to rescuers.

The search operation was launched after guards at a nearby dike reported seeing an avalanche strike two hikers, said rescue service spokesman Federico Catania, according to the Associated Press.

U.S. News & World Report revealed its list of the 2024 Best Diets on Jan. 3.

The list was compiled in partnership with The Harris Poll, an American market research and analytics company, as well as a panel of 43 health experts.

The experts included medical doctors, registered dietitian nutritionists, academic weight-loss researchers and nutritional epidemiologists, according to a press release.

“Diets that eliminate a lot of foods, have complicated rules or require large reliance on heavily processed shakes and meal replacements don’t fare well in our rankings,” Gretel Schueller, health editor for U.S. News, told Fox News Digital.

“[That’s] mainly because people struggle to stick to them for the long term.”

“Restrictive diets are difficult to follow and can also cause health issues and unhealthy behaviors, like binge eating,” Schueller continued. “The key is lifestyle changes, not quick fixes.”

To determine what qualifies as a “best diet,” the panel evaluated nutritional completeness, health risks and benefits, long-term sustainability and evidence-based effectiveness, Schueller noted.

STUDY SUGGESTS MEDITERRANEAN DIET COULD BOOST MALE FERTILITY: ‘CRUCIAL ROLE’

This year’s list of 30 diets spans 11 categories: Best Diets Overall, Best Weight Loss Diets, Best Fast Weight Loss Diets, Best Diabetes Diets, Best Diets for Bone and Joint Health, Best Diets for Healthy Eating, Best Diet Programs, Best Family-Friendly Diets, Best Heart-Healthy Diets, Best Plant-Based Diets and Easiest Diets to Follow, the press release stated.

Here are the 30 best diets for 2024, starting with the top-ranked diet.

1. Mediterranean diet

The Mediterranean diet, which focuses on healthy fats, fruits, whole grains, vegetables, nuts, seeds and beans, has topped the list for the seventh consecutive year.

Erin Palinski-Wade, a New Jersey-based registered dietitian and author of “2-Day Diabetes Diet,” said this diet’s emphasis on whole foods and considerable health benefits has contributed to its popularity.

MEDITERRANEAN DIET COULD HELP REDUCE BELLY FAT AND MUSCLE LOSS CAUSED BY AGING, STUDY FINDS

“One of the biggest appeals of this meal plan is how it offers a variety of foods with a focus on balance, preventing it from feeling restrictive while also allowing individuals to enjoy the tastes and flavors they enjoy most,” she told Fox News Digital.

“It is easy to follow and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes,” she said.

2. DASH diet

The DASH diet — the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet — was designed by the U.S.-based National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, to help lower blood pressure and promote overall health.

“This well-balanced diet puts an emphasis on increasing fruit and vegetable intake along with whole foods, something most of us fall short on,” said Palinski-Wade. “It is a well-balanced, evidence-based eating plan that can offer a variety of health benefits.”

3. MIND diet

The MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diet is a hybrid of the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet.

This diet is gaining in popularity, as it may help to benefit brain health and potentially reduce the risk of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, noted Palinski-Wade.

“As a flexible meal plan focused on maximizing overall intake of nutrient-dense foods, it may not only improve cognitive health, but could also reduce the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers,” she said.

4. Mayo Clinic diet

Designed by Mayo Clinic, this 12-week diet program follows a food pyramid with an emphasis on fruits, vegetables and whole grains, most of which have low calorie density, according to U.S. News.

“This diet focuses on satiety and offers flexibility, making it easy to stick with,” said Palinski-Wade.

“The focus on adding high-volume foods, which are often rich in fiber, may promote a variety of health benefits, from weight loss to lower cholesterol levels and improved heart health.”

The dietitian noted that the Volumetrics diet is also easy to follow, as it does not involve strict rules or restrictions and can be tailored to individual needs and preferences.

8. Dr. Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet

Designed by Dr. Andrew Weil, an integrative medicine doctor, this diet plan is designed to reduce and prevent inflammation.

Are your out-loud conversations fueling ads pushed to your devices?

0

Your smartphone is likely always listening to you. It has to be in order for voice-recognition assistants like Siri, Bixby, or Alexa to work. But is your device listening to your conversations and using them to target you with personalized ads?

While there is no definitive proof that this is happening, some experts suggest that it is possible for some apps to access your device’s microphone and record snippets of your conversations without your consent. This is the concern Mark has and why he wrote to us asking,

“2 days ago I was discussing an underwater camera, later that day my family member got an invoice on PayPal for an underwater camera. I did have my cell phone with me during the original discussion. Are hackers or AI listening to my conversations? Also how could they with this information know to invoice a family member?” — Mark

Well, Mark, audio surveillance is very real and may be used for targeted ads. This could be a serious breach of your privacy and security, and you may want to take some steps to prevent it. Here’s what you can do to make sure no one is listening in on your conversations.

Are your out-loud conversations fueling ads pushed to your devices?

1) Turning off your voice-recognition assistant

Voice-recognition assistants like Siri, Bixby and Alexa are constantly listening for trigger phrases in case you need them. When it comes to Siri, for example, Apple says it runs a speech recognizer at all times. Once your iPhone hears “hey Siri,” it then springs into action.

But if you’re uncomfortable with your smartphone listening to you, turning off your voice-recognition assistant takes just a few steps:

How to turn off Siri

  • Go to Settings
  • Click ‘Siri & Search’
  • Turn off the following options: Listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri,Press Side Button for Siri, and Allow Siri When Locked

2) Turning off your microphone

Voice-recognition assistants aren’t the only apps that might be listening in. If you’ve given a certain app your microphone privileges, it could be listening in too. Turning off your voice-recognition assistant won’t turn off other apps using your microphone. Here’s how to turn off your microphone:

3) Get good antivirus software

One of the ways you can protect yourself from this potential threat is by using reliable antivirus software on your device. Antivirus software can scan your device for any malicious apps that may be accessing your microphone or other sensitive data, and block them from doing so. Having antivirus software on your devices will also make sure you are stopped from clicking on any potential malicious links that may install malware on your devices, allowing hackers to gain access to your personal information.

In addition, Antivirus software can alert you of any suspicious activity on your device, and help you remove any unwanted or harmful apps. By using antivirus software, you can ensure that your device is not eavesdropping on your conversations by hackers and that your personal information is not being used to fuel targeted ads that could actually be phishing attempts. Find my review of Best Antivirus Protection here.

4) Use a VPN

A VPN, or virtual private network, is a service that creates a secure and encrypted connection between your device and a server on the internet. By using a VPN, you can hide your IP address and location from the websites and apps you use, and prevent them from tracking your online activity or personal information, thereby reducing the chances of receiving targeted ads based on the fact that there is no there is no direct link between your device and the website or app you are accessing. See my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

Kurt’s key takeaways

While hackers have the ability to potentially listen in on your conversations, there’s no evidence of this happening on a large scale. However, staying safe on the internet is all about mitigating risk. You should still be proactive about your internet safety, even if an attack or a hack hasn’t happened yet.

The Saints coach apologized to Smith in his postgame comments, but Jameis Winson suggested he and his teammates went rogue when the team was on the 1-yard line.

“I apologized to D.A. because the play was ‘Victory.’ But I also explained to D.A. that it was a team decision. I think that when you have a team morale and I asked the guys, ‘What do you want to do?’ We know how much Jamaal means to this team. And I understood from D.A.’s perspective.

“But D.A. didn’t condone it at all. However, we decided as a team to do it. And man, we got an interception to the 1-yard line – if we woulda scored, would it still have been disrespectful?”

Winston added that he had “no regrets” over the call.

Smith was upset when he met Allen at midfield but took the high road when talking about the last part of the game to reporters.

“They can do whatever they want. There are no rules against it,” Smith said. “We didn’t stop them the second half, and they can do whatever they want. It is what it is. Hats off to them. They kicked our you-know-what in the second half. That’s their prerogative. It’s also my prerogative to tell him how I feel. Credit to them. They can do whatever they want there.”

“I wish they would have lined up in run formation,” he said. “Don’t look like you’re going to take a knee and then run then ball. … I was just frustrated with that because I just feel like there was a way to do it, if you’re gonna do it.”

The 2023 NFL regular season came to a close on Sunday with the final playoff spots getting clinched and teams capping off the year with division titles.

The NFC side of the bracket was figured out before the AFC as the Miami Dolphins played the Buffalo Bills for the AFC East division crown and a chance at a home playoff game this month.

The San Francisco 49ers clinched the NFC West title and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Commanders and wrapped up the NFC East title as the Philadelphia Eagles fell to the New York Giants on the road.

The Detroit Lions are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and won their division for the first time since 1991. They are No. 3 in the NFC. Each of the top three NFC teams finished 12-5 on the year.

In the post-Tom Brady era, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers managed to squeak by the Carolina Panthers and win the NFC South. They will have a home playoff game.

The Eagles, Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers each picked up wild-card berths.

Even with the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday, the Baltimore Ravens enter the playoffs with the best record in the NFL at 13-5. The Ravens will have a first-round bye.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans won their respective division titles. The Chiefs now have their sights set on back-to-back Super Bowl titles though they have not looked like a championship-caliber team too often this season. The Texans are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2019. The Tennessee Titans upset the Jacksonville Jaguars to give the Texans the division title.

COWBOYS TAKE DOWN COMMANDERS TO WIN NFC EAST TITLE AS EAGLES’ STRUGGLES CONTINUE IN LOSS TO GIANTS

The Buffalo Bills pulled off a stunner over the Miami Dolphins to clinch the AFC East. It is the team’s fourth consecutive division title, and now they get a home playoff game. Buffalo won the game 21-14 on Sunday night.

The Cleveland Browns may have been the most improbable team to make the playoffs. The team started the year with Deshaun Watson as the quarterback and end the season with Joe Flacco as the starter. Their matchup with the Texans is one of the more intriguing ones of the wild-card round.

The Steelers also improbably snuck into the postseason as well – thanks to their win over the Ravens. With all the criticism lobbed toward Mike Tomlin, he continues the franchise’s streak of finishing at or above .500 and is back in the playoffs.

W9 Solicitations Rolls-Out New Platform and Disrupts The Form W-9 Intake Sector

0

There are so many tasks that must be performed by an entity’s accounting and bookkeeping department that obtaining payees’ Form W-9 often slides to the back burner.

Westlake Village, California, January 8, 2024, W9 Solicitations specializes in only one service: obtaining Form W-9s. Because of their 100% focus, they can get the job done so the payer is IRS Compliant. Compliance is not an option; it is mandatory. The IRS requires that a Form W-9 is solicited by a payer (business owner or accounting department) directly after the initial contact with a payee (Vendor, Independent Contractor, or Freelancer) and before the first payment is made.

When this action does not happen, the payer neither thinks about nor has the time to obtain a completed Form W-9 from his payees/vendors until December, or worse, until January of the following year, when 1099s are due. This is way too late.

As a result, by December, payers are stressed and frantically racing around to send out and collect completed Form W-9s from their payees to obtain their Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN), which are needed to prepare the required IRS Form 1099, which are due by January 31st. W9 Solicitations provides TIN Matching at no cost.

A failure to obtain and show proof that a payer has tried to get a completed Form W-9 from a payee may require the payer to withhold 24% of the amount paid to the payee, which is an extra administrative burden. Or worse, the payer could be held financially responsible to cover the 24% tax that should have been withheld.

W9 Solicitations provides:

  • Initial Vendor Contact Requests Program
  • Post Initial Vendor Contact Requests
  • Bounced and Non-Response Follow-Ups
  • Daily, Semi-Weekly, Weekly, and Monthly Payee Reminders
  • Tax Identification Number (TIN) Matching
  • IRS First and Second Annual Solicitations
  • “Reasonable Cause” Documentation
  • Pending Form W-9 Support
  • Completed Form W-9 Delivered in PDF Format
  • Compliance Assurance: OFAC, FBI, INTERPOL & Many Others
  • Form W-9 Requests by Email, Fax, Text, Phone, & Certified Mail

W9 Solicitations services: Individuals, Freelancers, Small Businesses, Micro Enterprises, Mid-Size Businesses, Large Corporations, Government Agencies and Non-Profit Organizations.

The end of the 2023 college football season has arrived as two undefeated teams vie for the national championship.

Michigan and Washington are looking to become just the sixth team in major college football history to finish a season 15-0.

The matchup at NRG Stadium in Houston is between two teams that will play against each other as conference foes next season as Washington departs the Pac-12 for the Big Ten in 2024.

Both programs are looking to break lengthy national championship droughts and will be playing in their first CFP title game.

FOX SPORTS’ TIM BRANDO DISCUSSES POSSIBLE WASHINGTON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE PAC-12 DEPARTURE

Michigan last won the national title in 1997 (shared with Nebraska) while Washington’s last championship was in 1991 (shared with Miami).

It will be a matchup of opposite strengths as Michigan’s dominant defense takes on the high-powered offense from Washington.

Let’s take a dive into what to look for as Michigan and Washington play for the final four-team playoff trophy.

No. 1 Michigan vs. No. 2 Washington – 7:30 p.m. ET

Washington Huskies: 14-0

The Washington Huskies will again enter the championship game as underdogs after being underdogs in their last two games against Oregon and Texas.

It’s been a season of close calls for Washington, winning their last 10 games by 10 points or less.

Despite not winning pretty to end the regular season, the Huskies continued to win with the best passing offense in the country.

Michael Penix celebrates a win

Led by Heisman Trophy runner-up Michael Penix Jr., Washington leads the country in passing yards (350.0) and has two wide receivers who have gone over the 1,000 mark in Rome Odunze and Ja’Lynn Polk.

Their offensive line was voted the Joe Moore Award winner as the top group in the country and has allowed Penix to be sacked just 11 times this season, tied for the fourth-fewest in the country.

“The key is going to be our protection because Michigan can really get after the quarterback,” Washington legend Warren Moon told Fox News Digital. “But we have what was voted as the best offensive line in the country, so I think that’s in our favor, too.”

CFP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: WASHINGTON MAINTAINS UNDERDOG STATUS AHEAD OF MICHIGAN MATCHUP

“If we can block them up front and handle the pressure that they will bring, I think we’ll do very well in the secondary as far as throwing the football because we have three really talented receivers. Two of them [are] over 1,000 yards. They’re all good after the catch, and they drop very, very few balls. And we have a very underrated tight end in Jack Westover.”

The Huskies will be facing a Michigan defense that allowed the least amount of points (9.5) in the country and the second-fewest yards (239.7) while getting after the quarterback.

Washington wide receivers celebrate a touchdown

The Wolverines are 19th in the country with 38 sacks on the season and got to Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe six times in the Rose Bowl.

On the back end, the Michigan secondary allows just 152.6 passing yards per game but will be facing its toughest challenge of the season in Washington’s offense.

“Michigan is elite defensively, but they’ve gotten to feast on horrific, horrific offenses in the Big Ten,” Fox Sports analyst Brock Huard told the Associated Press. “So from a stress test, Michigan has not seen anything the likes of Washington’s offense.”

Michigan Wolverines: 14-0

The calling card all season for Michigan has been its defense, which has stifled opponents throughout the year.

The offense is often overlooked due to the prowess of the defense, but the matchup with Washington could give the Michigan offense its time to shine.

The Wolverines want to run the football and will attempt to do so against a Washington defense that allows 138.8 yards per game. Washington allows 4.40 yards per carry – 86th in the country – per the AP.

Senior running back Blake Corum was spectacular against Alabama in the semifinals, gaining 118 yards from scrimmage with two touchdowns. He leads the nation with 26 rushing touchdowns.

“I feel like he, in my eyes, is the most valuable player of our team. There’s so many of them that are right up at his caliber, but especially from an offensive perspective, I feel like he’s one of the guys that makes our offense go,” quarterback J.J. McCarthy said last week, according to Fox Sports. “Just everything he’s been through, all the adversity that he’s been through, just from his upbringing to this past year, just everything about who he is and just his character, how he attacks every single day, it just rubs off on all of us.”

“[He’s] just one of the most valuable players on our team — if not the most.”

McCarthy went on a career-defining drive late against the Crimson Tide, converting a crucial fourth down in Alabama territory to send the game into overtime. He’s 25-1 since taking over as the starter in 2022 and will be facing a Washington defense that allows 263.2 passing yards per game.

“I’ve said it before, but right here, this is the greatest quarterback in University of Michigan, college football history,” Jim Harbaugh told media members after beating Alabama “Got a long way to go to get where Tom Brady eventually got to, which is the GOAT.”

“But in a college career there’s been nobody at Michigan better than J.J. I know we talk about it an amalgamation of quarterbacks. He is that guy.”

McCarthy will become a legend in Ann Arbor if he’s able to bring home the title.
