Saquon Barkley says it's a 'possibility' Week 18 will be last game as Giant: 'It's out of my control'

0

After this weekend, Saquon Barkley will find himself in the same situation he was in during last year’s offseason.

The New York Giants wrap up their season against the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, and without a contract, Barkley understands the “possibility” it could be his last game with the G-Men.

Barkley and the Giants discussed, but could not agree on, a long-term deal last year. He played with the franchise tag this season.

The sixth-year running back will be a free agent after the season.

Barkley can be designated with the franchise tag a second time, but he wants to avoid that and remain a Giant.

“I’ve mentioned before that I want to be a Giant for life. That was a goal of mine when I got drafted,” Barkley said Wednesday, via ESPN. “I wanted to leave a legacy here.

“But it’s out of my control.”

Barkley said that if the Giants don’t tag him and aren’t willing to give him what he wants, he’s going to explore the free agent market.

“I just want something that is fair. … But, like I said, I get it. It’s a business. If it’s not here, hopefully it’s some other place,” he said.

The running back market has plummeted in recent years, prompting Barkley and other star running backs to meet via Zoom earlier this year to discuss ways to combat their declining demand.

“I do know that if I’m going to strike, I have to do it now. This is really probably my last opportunity to get a second deal,” Barkley said. “After that, the way they view running backs and treat running backs, it’s not really ideal if you’re looking at it that way. I would definitely love to get a second deal.”

HOME OF DOLPHINS’ TYREEK HILL ENGULFED IN FLAMES; TEAM SAYS EVERYONE SAFE

For the fourth time in five seasons, Barkley missed multiple games to injury. This year, he suffered a high ankle sprain after getting tackled in Week 2 and missed three games. He missed Week 18 last year for rest but missed four games with an ankle injury in 2021, and he tore his ACL in Week 2 of 2020. He missed three games in 2019 with another ankle injury.

The second pick of the 2018 NFL Draft needs 84 yards on the ground for his fourth season of at least 1,000 rushing yards. He’s found the end zone eight times this year and is averaging 4 yards per carry behind arguably the worst offensive line in football.

Chiefs star Travis Kelce calls media ‘bunch of jacka–es’ after calling for Mike Tomlin’s firing

0

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce had some choice words for the Pittsburgh media during his latest “New Heights” podcast episode with his older brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce.

They were discussing how veteran Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin will put together his 17th straight non-losing season no matter the result of Week 18’s matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday. The Steelers are 9-7 despite struggles throughout the season.

However, some in the Pittsburgh media were calling for the team to move on from Tomlin, whether it be letting him go mid-season or trading him for assets if possible.

Travis unloaded on the media for even thinking about that as a possibility.

“They were talking about firing him, what, seven weeks ago?” Jason asked his brother.

“The media’s so dumb,” Travis responded. “Why do we do the media? Bunch of jacka–es. Just a bunch of jacka–es. Just out here talking f—ing nonsense. One of the best coaches the NFL’s ever even seen about to possibly get his 17th consecutive non-losing season. Jesus Christ.”

FROM OUTKICK: PAT MCAFEE SAYS AARON RODGERS WASN’T IMPLYING THAT JIMMY KIMMEL IS ON THE EPSTEIN CLIENT LIST

The brothers went on to talk about what they were doing 17 years ago, with Jason at Cincinnati already playing college football, while Travis brought up his driver’s license being suspended in the state of Ohio.

Either way, that was done to put into perspective how long Tomlin has been putting together a competitive Steelers group since 2007 when he took over as head coach. He has a career 172-100-2 record in the regular season — a .639 win percentage.

The 2023 season, though, has been a turbulent one for Pittsburgh, with offensive coordinator Matt Canada being fired mid-season as that part of the game struggled mightily.

Nonetheless, the Steelers managed to put wins up a tough AFC North division this season. They have a shot at a playoff berth, too, in a variety of ways, most of which come with a win over the AFC’s No. 1-seeded Ravens.

Steelers fans and media members might be biting their tongues if Tomlin can lead this group to the postseason, and though Travis and Jason don’t have to worry about their playoff berths, they might even be rooting for that to come to fruition in the end.

NFL analyst Brian Baldinger rips Eagles’ Jordan Davis for being ‘out of shape’: ‘It shows’

0

NFL analyst and former offensive lineman Brian Baldinger wants Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis to drop some pounds entering the new year.

Davis, listed at 6-foot-6, 336 pounds, is “out of shape” in Baldinger’s eyes.

“I don’t know what they fine him every week, but I gotta believe he’s getting money taken from him. He’s overweight, and it shows,” Baldinger told the “PHLY Philadelphia Eagles” podcast Tuesday.

The Eagles’ defense has come under scrutiny in recent weeks after the team faltered following a 10-1 start. They are now 11-5 after falling unexpectedly to the Arizona Cardinals at Lincoln Financial Field.

There has been finger-pointing on both sides of the ball, but Baldinger directed his toward Davis despite Philadelphia’s secondary shouldering a lot of the defensive blame in this recent skid.

FROM OUTKICK: EAGLES PLAYER CALLS OUT AJ BROWN FOR HIS BAD BODY LANGUAGE AS SPIRALING CONTINUES IN PHILADELPHIA

“He’s not pursuing the football, he’s nothing in the pass rush, so that’s one. If he’s going to play with that effort and be overweight like that, then you say, ‘OK, they’re a man short in the rotation,’” Baldinger said. “Fletcher (Cox)’s playing too much … because (Davis is) not effective inside, they need another guy inside in their defensive tackle rotation.

“I’m not sure why he keeps dressing. He’s been ineffective. When the plays are going on, he’s basically walking on the field. It’s bad effort.”

Davis was the Eagles’ 13th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and he has totaled 42 combined tackles (16 solo), 2½ sacks and one forced fumble over 16 games.

The 23-year-old Georgia product had just 18 tackles in 13 games last season (five starts), but his role this year next to fellow Bulldog Jalen Carter increased. While an increase in production is there, Baldinger believes there needs to be more.

5 smart, simple tech changes to make 2024 better

0

New year, same you. And that’s OK! You don’t need to makeover your entire life to have a good 2024.

But I can tell you firsthand it’s totally worth it to spend a few minutes cleaning up your tech life. Keep reading for steps to banish junk mail, make your phone less annoying and improve your cybersecurity. You got this!

I share tips like this every day in my free newsletter, The Current. Join 500K smart people who read it. You’ll be glad you did!

TWO MINUTE TECH TRICKS: START THE YEAR WITH A CLEAN INBOX

1. Automate a no-brainer security step

You forget to lock your computer when you get up. Welcome to the club. Be smart and tell your Windows or Mac to do it for you! You can set your computer to auto-lock if you’ve been inactive for a certain amount of time.

On Windows:

  • Open Settings and go to Personalization, then Lock Screen.
  • Click Screen saver settings and select any option (except “None”) from the Screen saver dropdown menu.
  • Set a time for Windows to wait before locking. Check the box for On resume, display logon screen. Hit OK.

On a Mac:

  • Click the Apple menu > System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Save > Screen Saver. Use the slider to choose a time.
  • Click Show All to go back to the main System Preferences window.
  • Click Security, then Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver.

Man looks onto his computer (Cyberguy.com)

You can also set up your PC to lock based on where your phone is. Think about it: If your phone’s nearby, so are you — and so your computer stays open. You walk away, it locks.

2. Say goodbye to group chats that drive you up the wall

Group chats are fun when you’re happy to be there and awful when you don’t care about the convo. The adult move is to ask whoever added you to remove you …

  • Or do the ol’ Irish exit if you have an iPhone. Tap the thread, then select the group icon at the top. Scroll and tap Leave this Conversation. Save this for when you’re desperate.
  • You can also go the subtle route and mute the convo. (This is what I usually do.) Tap the group text message, select the group icon at the top of the thread, then scroll and toggle on Hide Alerts.

YOUR SMART ASSISTANT IS LISTENING, BUT DOES THAT IMPACT THE ADS YOU SEE?

On Android, muting is your best option — unless you’re up to telling Aunt Kathy you’re out.

  • If you use Google Messages, open the group text, then tap the three-dot menu > Group Details > Notifications. Select Silent. Ahh, better.
  • For other Android apps, look through your messaging menu options for an option to mute the conversation.

3. Fix the home security mistake even I was making

Back in the day, I turned off all my home security alerts because they were annoying — bad move. What you want to do is adjust your camera’s sensitivity (or upgrade to better cams) if yours are always going off accidentally.

Photo of a mounted ring camera.

Ring cameras are used by most people to capture footage around their homes. (CyberGuy.com)

You can usually find controls to adjust motion sensitivity in your security system app. Systems go by different names, so I’ll cover the steps for two.

Adjust your camera sensitivity with SimpliSafe

  • Open the SimpliSafe app and tap Cameras at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap the gear icon at the top right of the screen.
  • Choose the camera you would like to change.
  • Choose Motion Detection and make your adjustments to the sensitivity.

FIVE DUMB TECH SECURITY MISTAKES YOU’RE MAKING

Adjust your camera sensitivity with Ring

  • Open the Ring app and tap the gear icon for a camera.
  • Tap Motion Settings > Motion Sensitivity. Adjust the slider.

4. Organize your cords and cables the way pros do

When everything’s jumbled up, it’s impossible to tell what goes where. Try this super-smart trick.

  • Get some stickers. These can be labels you write on or color-coded dots. One of my readers, Tony, suggests using colored foil stars.
  • Create a system that works for you. Write on the labels or use colors to represent the cord type (e.g., red for USB-C, blue for HDMI).
  • Affix the same label or colored sticker to the cable and the port on the device. When you plug in the cord, simply match the cable’s sticker to the port.
  • Place the sticker in the same position on each cable. Try putting it on the top of the cord to quickly find the correct orientation into the port.

5. Less junk mail to deal with

Is your mailbox overflowing with unsolicited credit card and insurance offers? You can thank the big four credit reporting bureaus: Experian, Equifax, TransUnion and Innovis.

Closeup of two modern black and brown metal red flag mailboxes at single family home in residential suburbs with nobody and house in background

Each bureau provides lists of consumers, based on specific criteria, to credit and insurance companies for prescreened offers. Yes, it’s completely legal. But don’t worry, there’s a solution: Opt Out Prescreen, a tool developed by these very credit bureaus.

  • Visit optoutprescreen.com. You can choose to opt out for five years or forever, then fill in the form.
  • Opting out permanently? You’ll have to use snail mail, but it’s worth it. Print, sign and mail a confirmation form.

‘Would be unbelievable to win this title’

Luke Littler has taken the world of darts by storm and on Wednesday, he could make history.

The 16-year-old sensation stands to make history when he takes on Luke Humphries in the PDC World Darts Championship at the Alexandra Palace in London.

A win there would make him the youngest champion in the sport’s history.

“It would be unbelievable to win this title. I set myself the target to win one game and be back after Christmas, and I’m still here,” Littler said, via The Associated Press.

“I can’t even imagine lifting that trophy yet though. I’ve just got to stay focused, relax and be Luke Littler.”

Littler, an unseeded player from northwest England, reached the final on Tuesday after upsetting 2018 champion Rob Cross 6-2. He previously defeated five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld and has already secured himself $250,000 in prize money.

A victory in Wednesday’s final would secure Littler a prize of $630,000 and the title of youngest champion. According to CNBC, the record is currently held by Michael van Gerwen, who won the title in 2014 at 24.

Humphries, 28, is the No. 3 seed, but is not underestimating Littler heading into what is his first championship final as well.

“I’m probably going to have to play the game of my life … to stand a chance tomorrow.”

Aaron Rodgers ‘was just trying to talk s—‘ when he made Jimmy Kimmel-Epstein link, Pat McAfee says

0

ESPN host Pat McAfee on Wednesday addressed the controversial remark Aaron Rodgers made when he attached Jimmy Kimmel’s name to Jeffrey Epstein’s client list during their program this week.

Rodgers’ remark prompted Kimmel to offer a fiery response and threatened to get lawyers involved.

McAfee, the former Indianapolis Colts punter, equated the comments Rodgers made to “talk s—” and apologized for “being a part of” the drama that came about afterward.

“I can see why Jimmy Kimmel felt the way he felt especially with his position about but I think Aaron was just trying to talk s—,” McAfee said. “Now, did it go too far? Jimmy Kimmel certainly said that was the case.

“We obviously don’t like that fact that we’re associated with anything negative ever. We like our show to be an uplifting one. A happy one. A fun one. But it’s because we talk s— and try to make light of everything, some things obviously people get very p—ed off about especially when they’re that serious of allegations.”

McAfee added, “Hopefully those two will be able to settle this.”

Rodgers’ remark appeared to be just another page in the ongoing feud between the two.

“There’s a lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, who are really hoping that doesn’t come out,” Rodgers said. “I’ll tell you what, if that list comes out, I definitely will be popping some sort of bottle.”

Kimmel, whose show runs on ABC, took a shot at Rodgers in March before he was traded to the Jets when he talked about theories of UFOs being shot down in the midst of the Chinese spy balloon scandal.

“Might be time to revisit that concussion protocol,” Kimmel quipped.

Kimmel did not appear to be laughing at the jab he took from Rodgers on McAfee’s show and threatened to get lawyers involved if he kept it up.

ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky raises eyebrows as he sniffs Molly Qerim’s shoe

ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky raised eyebrows on Tuesday when he sniffed Molly Qerim’s shoe during a segment on “First Take.”

Orlovsky was holding Qerim’s shoe as he, Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe talked about the Dallas Cowboys’ victory over the Detroit Lions. As Orlovsky was holding it, he decided to take a whiff.

Smith wondered whether Orlovsky had a foot fetish, and Sharpe replied that he had to keep his eye on Orlovsky going forward.

Orlovsky later appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” and was asked about what he was doing with the shoe.

“I don’t have a foot fetish. … What I don’t understand is why everyone is so taken aback,” he said. “It’s the first time she’s worn the shoe. Of course, they’re gonna smell totally normal.

“She gave me the shoe because she was like, ‘these are the shoes Stephen A. bought me because of the UConn national title bet. These are the first time I’m wearing it, they just showed up in my office this morning.’ I was like, OK.”

McAfee said the entire premise of him having the shoe and the bet was not the big deal, but once Orlovsky smelled the shoe, that was when things got a little strange.

“Well, that’s just making an assumption.”

The solar-powered car by the numbers

Imagine driving a tiny car that runs on sunlight. That’s what these vehicles are all about. They have solar panels on the roof that can power them for up to 19 miles on a sunny day, depending on where you are. The Squad can also go as fast as 25 mph, which is not bad for a solar car.

No need to worry about plugging in your solar car

Squad’s solar cars work differently from regular EVs. These cars get charged every day throughout their lives. When the battery is full, it can’t take any more charge. But most users find that the daily usage and solar charge are well-balanced. On average, micro-cars drive about 7.5 miles per day, while Squad’s solar panel can give up to 13.7 miles of charge daily.

Solar car safety and regulations

Squad vehicles are designed with safety in mind. According to the company, the Solar City car has several safety features, such as:

  • A steel chassis that protects the passengers from impacts and collisions
  • A roll cage that prevents the roof from collapsing in case of a rollover
  • A seat belt and airbag system that reduces the risk of injury in case of a crash
  • A rearview camera and parking sensors that help the driver maneuver in tight spaces and avoid obstacles
  • A digital dashboard that displays the speed, battery level, solar power, and other information
  • A GPS navigation and Bluetooth connectivity that allow the driver to access maps, music, and phone calls

Meeting city demands with solar-powered vehicles

Cities worldwide face significant challenges related to space, emissions, and charging infrastructure. Squad addresses these concerns with its commitment to:

  • A small vehicle footprint that optimizes scarce public space
  • Emission-free, sustainable design and production
  • Independence from traditional charging infrastructure
  • Solar and regular power infrastructure charging options

Squad: solar at its core

All Squad vehicles, both current and future models, come equipped with integrated solar PV panels. This commitment to solar power ensures that every Squad on the road is a solar car. Squad is not just stopping at its current offerings. The company is actively developing a four-person L7 model, which will cater to families with children. This strategic move will keep the Squad’s size and weight low while maximizing efficiency.
