Ask a doc: ‘Why are my ears ringing, and should I see a doctor?’

Anyone who has experienced a persistent ringing, buzzing or whooshing sound in their ears knows how annoying it can be — but is it a sign of something serious?

Approximately 50 million people in the United States are affected by tinnitus, a condition that fills the ears with internal sounds no one else can hear, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Daniel S. Troast, doctor of audiology at HearUSA, a hearing aid provider in Winter Garden, Florida, shared with Fox News Digital the symptoms, causes and myths surrounding tinnitus, as well as ways to treat and prevent it.

Symptoms of tinnitus

“Most of us have experienced ringing in our ears after going to a concert, but if it lasts for less than a day, it’s very often not a cause for concern,” said Troast.

Tinnitus is defined as a “persistent ringing, buzzing or whooshing sound in the ears that the patient can hear, but no one else can,” he said. 

Some patients have even reported hearing crickets or music in their heads, according to the doctor.

Common causes of tinnitus

The most common cause of tinnitus is noise-induced hearing loss. Approximately 90% of people suffering from tinnitus have some form of hearing loss, according to Mayo Clinic.

“Tinnitus is more a brain condition than it is a hearing condition,” said Troast. “Essentially, it’s the brain’s response to a change in the auditory system.”

For someone with normal hearing, the brain is used to receiving sound signals at various frequencies moving through the ear canal. 

“However, when someone has hearing loss, the brain stops receiving those signals — and the tinnitus is the brain’s response to this miscommunication with the ears,” according to the audiologist.

Other possible causes of tinnitus and hearing loss include certain medications, blockages from earwax, ear infections, dental issues and head or neck injuries.

Myths about ear ringing

The most prominent myth is that tinnitus can be cured, said Troast.

“While it can be managed effectively, nothing will cure tinnitus entirely. Because of this, bogus tinnitus ‘cures’ regularly circulate on social media,” the doctor warned. 

“Tinnitus is a brain condition, not an ear condition — anything that goes into your ear would do nothing to fix the underlying problem.”

Some of the most common recommendations include ear drops and supplements, which have no effect aside from a potential placebo, according to Troast.

“As mentioned earlier, tinnitus is a brain condition, not an ear condition,” he said.

“So, anything that goes into your ear would do nothing to fix the underlying problem, which is a miscommunication between your ears and your brain.”

Another faux “cure” involves tapping the back of the head to create a reverberating sound.

PREVENT HEARING LOSS WITH THESE 6 EXPERT TIPS

“While this may stop the tinnitus for a few seconds and may be an effective coping method, it will never make the tinnitus go away,” said Troast.

“When a person taps their head in this manner, they’re replacing the sound of their tinnitus with the sound of the thumping — but when the thumping stops, the tinnitus returns.”

When to see a doctor

While tinnitus isn’t physically dangerous, Troast warned that it can be extremely damaging for patients’ mental health, with proven negative effects on psychological well-being.

“If you’re suffering from tinnitus, a great first step is always to see an audiologist who can conduct a hearing test,” he advised. “The audiologist will be able to determine if hearing loss is the root cause of your tinnitus and can then establish a treatment plan.”

That plan will most often include hearing aids, which will amplify external sounds to help reduce the person’s focus on the tinnitus.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a psychologist can also be very effective when administered in tandem with audiological treatment, Troast said. 

“CBT teaches the patient to live with tinnitus, helping them understand that they can acknowledge the existence of the sound without the doom and gloom that it’s typically associated with,” he said.

Can tinnitus be prevented?

The best way to prevent tinnitus is to limit your exposure to loud noise, the audiologist said.

He recommends wearing hearing protection in loud environments such as concerts and sporting events and while using loud equipment like a lawnmower or leaf blower. 

“It’s also important to limit your time listening to headphones and earbuds at loud volumes,” he added.

Another step toward prevention is getting a regular hearing test. 

“Hearing tests not only help in determining if you suffer from hearing loss, as mentioned above, but they also have the potential to point you in a direction that will treat both hearing loss and tinnitus,” said Troast.

Avoiding total silence is another way to reduce symptoms.

“Patients often say it’s most noticeable when they’re trying to sleep,” said Troast. “Having some sort of white noise or brown noise playing in the background can help drown out the incessant ringing.”

5 ways to enhance your current TV setup

If you’re already content with your current TV and setup and just want to gear up for the game, below are the top five ways to enhance your viewing experience:

1) Check your connection

Services like Paramount+ offer the ability to stream the Super Bowl this year. You’ll want to make sure you don’t lose the game in two ways:

Make sure you’re using a wired connection to the internet if possible. That way, you’re not depending on a Wi-Fi signal, which may be impacted by how many people are over at your home for the game and using your Wi-FI for their devices or who else is streaming elsewhere in your home. On that note, make sure you’re maximizing bandwidth by making sure your kids or spouse isn’t streaming in higher resolutions while the game is on.

2) Backup connection

The game is the most popular thing to watch that Sunday, so if you’ve got spotty coverage and are concerned about drops in service, you should have a way to broadcast the game traditionally (aka “over the air”), so keep an antenna ready.

3) Adjust the sound

While the picture quality often steals the show when it comes to watching the Super Bowl, sound quality can enhance or diminish the experience. Most TVs these days have audio settings, which, if adjusted, can really enhance the game experience in your home. If you’re more interested in the commentary, then you can adjust the sound to boost the dialogue.

In most TVs, you can usually find the audio presets and adjustments under “Setting,” then “Audio” or “Sound.”

There, you can play around with the treble, bass and equalizer. Some of the presets, such as “movie,” enhance dialogue or “standard” to level out the commentary. Sometimes, it is worth checking to make sure the bass is at optimal levels, as having it too high can cause distortion. On the other hand, if you prefer to hear every impact of every play, you can turn on the bass ‘just so’ to add to the drama.

4) Brighten the picture

To make sure that friends behind those huddled in front of the TV can enjoy the game just as much, check the picture quality of your set.

For LEDs, if it seems too dark or dim, turn up the backlight control, which can increase the brightness behind the LCD screen.

For OLEDs, instead of just turning up the brightness, turn up the OLED light setting. Additionally, make sure you turn off the energy saver or auto-brightness control settings before game day, as it can impact screen brightness.

5) Keep the motion real

Some TVs come with smoothing or dejudder settings, sometimes referred to as the “Soap Opera effect.” It can be helpful to adjust this setting or turn it off or on, depending on your preference, before the game. On one hand, it could smooth out motions made on the field or create too much distraction by creating graphical trails from fast motions.

Upgrade your current setup

If you were just waiting for an excuse to upgrade your TV setup for game day, delay no more. Here are five things to look for in a new TV

1) Screen size and resolution: You want a TV that can display the game in high definition and has a large enough screen to enjoy the action from any angle. Look for TVs that have at least 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) and a screen size of 55 inches or more. Some TVs also offer 8K resolution (7680 x 4320 pixels) for even more detail, but they are more expensive and not widely available.

2) Refresh rate and motion handling: You want a TV that can handle fast-moving scenes without blurring or stuttering. Look for TVs that have a high refresh rate (the number of times the screen updates per second) and a low input lag (the time it takes for the TV to respond to your commands). A refresh rate of 120 Hz or more and an input lag of 15 ms or less are ideal for gaming and sports. Some TVs also have features like variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low latency mode (ALLM) that can adjust the refresh rate and input lag dynamically according to the content.

3) HDR and color performance: You want a TV that can deliver vivid and realistic colors and contrast. Look for TVs that support high dynamic range (HDR) formats like HDR10, Dolby Vision, or HDR10+. These formats can enhance the brightness, contrast, and color range of the image. Also, look for TVs that have a wide color gamut (the range of colors the TV can produce) and high color accuracy (how close the colors are to the original source).

4) Sound quality and features: You want a TV that can produce clear and immersive sound. Look for TVs that have a good sound system with multiple speakers and a subwoofer. Some TVs also have features like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X that can create a surround sound effect with overhead and directional audio. Alternatively, you can also connect your TV to a soundbar or a home theater system for a better audio experience.

5) Smart features and connectivity: You want a TV that can stream your favorite apps and services and connect to your other devices. Look for TVs that have a smart platform like Android TV, Roku TV, Fire TV, or webOS. These platforms can offer a variety of apps and services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Max, Disney+, YouTube and more.

Also, look for TVs that have multiple HDMI ports and USB ports to connect your gaming consoles, streaming devices, soundbars, and other peripherals. Some TVs also have features like voice control, AirPlay, Chromecast or Miracast that can let you control your TV or cast content from your smartphone or tablet.

6 surprisingly simple ways to keep yourself healthy (hint: sleep is involved)

More than a month into the New Year of 2024, those who haven’t yet made progress on their health and weight-loss resolutions may be feeling a little discouraged.

But experts agree that the number on the scale shouldn’t be the only way to measure a “win.”

Weight alone doesn’t paint a complete picture of a person’s health, according to Dr. Barbara Bawer, a primary care physician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Body mass index (BMI) historically has been used by physicians to measure cutoff points that determine whether someone is overweight or obese.

But in June 2023, the American Medical Association (AMA) released a statement calling BMI an “imperfect measure” because it does not directly assess body fat.

To get a more comprehensive outlook of health, Bawer is encouraging people to get back to the “BASICS” — Brain, Activity, Stomach, Immunity, Checkups and Sleep. 

FOODS TO EAT, AND NOT EAT, TO PREVENT CANCER, ACCORDING TO A DOCTOR AND NUTRITIONIST

She has developed a simple list that anyone can use to check in on their health — along with questions to consider for each item.

No. 1 – Brain

“Do you have trouble remembering appointments or important dates? Do you frequently misplace things? Has your SAGE score changed in the past year?”

SAGE (Self-Administered Gerocognitive Exam) is a self-administered test that can spot early signs of dementia, which can be downloaded on OSU’s website.

“If a patient finds that they are more forgetful — or worse, if a member of their family or a friend points things out — this may be evidence that your cognitive health is not as good as it should be,” said Bawer.

In that case, she recommends seeing a doctor for an evaluation. 

To strengthen cognitive health, Bawer suggested doing activities like brain games or puzzles.

Other tips to boost brain health include eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, staying well-hydrated, getting good sleep and staying connected with friends, family and the community.

“Poor cognitive status may be due to depression or dementia,” Bawer noted.

Melanie Avalon, an Atlanta-based health influencer, entrepreneur and host of “The Intermittent Fasting Podcast” and “The Melanie Avalon Biohacking Podcast”, said that a myriad of general lifestyle factors can support brain health, “including a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet and avoidance of environmental toxins.”

No. 2 – Activity

“How active are you? Do you complete 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week? Do you experience any pain when exercising? Do you sit for more than eight hours per day?”

Said Bawer, “A sedentary lifestyle, such as working from home and sitting at a computer for most of that time without getting up, puts you at risk for cardiovascular disease.” 

She added that “sitting for long periods of time tightens our muscles and puts more stress on our joints when we do use them.”

To combat this, the doctor suggested setting an alarm every hour that reminds you to get up, use the restroom, walk to another area of the home or step outside (ideally for a walk) to get in more steps and movement. 

“Stretching is also important as we age to improve our flexibility as well as our muscle and joint health,” Bawer added. 

“A sedentary lifestyle, such as working from home and sitting at a computer for most of that time without getting up, puts you at risk for cardiovascular disease.”

Make sure you’re finding time to exercise regularly, the doctor recommended, while taking note of any new pain you experience during physical activity.

Exercise serves as a beneficial stress for the body that helps to maintain homeostasis, stimulating cellular adaptations for health and longevity, said Avalon.

“These effects include beneficially affecting hormones, boosting the mitochondria, supporting repair and renewal, and helping the body adapt to challenges,” she said.

Exercise doesn’t have to mean spending hours at the gym, Avalon added.

“You can also increase physical activity by implementing fun movement into your day — run daily errands rather than always choosing delivery services, park far away in the parking lot, take the stairs rather than the elevator, have impromptu dance sessions while house cleaning or get a dog to encourage walks,” she suggested.

No. 3 – Stomach

“Do you have indigestion, stomach pain or bloating? Are your bowel movements regular? Is there blood in your stool? Have you experienced unexplained weight gain or loss?”

Unexplained weight loss, said Bawer, “could be a sign of cancer. Unexplained weight gain may be due to a number of conditions, but this may also point to unhealthy foods going into your body and a sedentary lifestyle.”

Not having regular bowel movements can indicate that the motility of the gut is slow, which can be due to lack of activity, poor nutrition or poor water intake — and can lead to inflammation and disease development, the doctor said. 

“Indigestion can be a sign of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or esophagitis, both of which may need medication to help us treat them,” Bawer noted.

Other potential triggers include food intolerances or sensitivities, functional abdominal disorders or GI illnesses like diverticulitis, ischemia, bowel obstruction or ulcers.

Avalon pointed out the danger of ignoring GI issues, digestive distress or bouts of irritable bowel syndrome.

“Taking such concerns seriously can potentially improve health radically,” she said. “Healthy, pain-free digestion and regular bowel movements can signify proper digestion of nutrients and a flourishing microbiome, all of which intrinsically support the body’s overall health.”

No. 4 – Immunity

“Do you get sick often or get frequent infections? Does it take you longer than others to recover from illness? Have you had recommended vaccinations?”

Bawer told Fox News Digital, “Your immune system may not be up to par if you are not exercising, eating well or getting enough sleep, and this can lead to frequent infections.”

Genetic conditions or autoimmune conditions can also lead to a low immune system.

“Strengthen your immunity by getting the nutrients you need through a balanced diet and stay up to date on your vaccinations,” Bawer advised.

Avalon agreed that a healthy immune system starts with diet. 

A March 2023 study found that the characteristics of ultra-processed foods can promote chronic inflammation in the body and encourage non-communicable diseases, she pointed out. 

“Choose a fresh, whole-foods diet to help create a cornerstone for immunity.”

“Have you completed an annual checkup with your primary care physician? Do you have any health concerns? Are you up to date on all recommended screenings?”

Staying current with physical exams — even if you don’t have any symptoms — can help catch diseases before they fully develop or even start, noted Bawer.

Doctors can also provide lifestyle modifications to consider so that you avoid developing diseases.

“Many times during annual check-ups, when we ask the patient something, get vitals or do labs, we find an issue that is brewing, but the patient had no symptoms and would not have known otherwise,” she said.

Avalon echoed the importance of annual in-person checkups. 

“An expert third-party opinion can provide an unbiased overview of one’s health, find potentially undiagnosed issues and provide motivation to continue on one’s health journey,” she said.

No. 6 – Sleep

“Do you get seven to nine hours of sleep each night? Are you tired during the day? Do you often need a nap to get through the day?”

“Poor sleep is linked to cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline/dementia, poor immunity, mood changes like depression and anxiety, and pain receptors firing inappropriately, among other things,” said Bawer.

Snoring that interrupts sleep can be a sign of undiagnosed sleep apnea, she warned, which needs treatment with a CPAP machine. 

“Most people need seven to eight hours of sleep to get restorative sleep, even if they think they can function on less,” said Bawer.

On the other hand, oversleeping can be a sign of depression.

Calling sleep the “basic foundation of health and wellness,” Avalon recommended cultivating a consistent wind-down routine and a dark, cool sleeping environment.

“For more advanced hacks, try wearing blue-light blocking glasses at night or using a cooling mattress,” she suggested. 

“Modern wearables or smart mattresses can also be used to evaluate and track one’s sleep quality.”

California county votes to make loneliness a public health emergency, blaming pandemic

Loneliness has been declared a public health emergency in Silicon Valley.

San Mateo County, located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, passed a resolution on Jan. 30 that officially declared loneliness a public health crisis.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on the decision, according to a local report.

“San Mateo County was the first in the nation to declare loneliness a public health crisis after the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution my office authored Tuesday,” said supervisor David Canepa in a post on X.

“Loneliness has a profound impact on health and is comparable to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day,” he added.

Canepa said he is also calling for the state of California to establish a “minister of loneliness” position.

It would help those “suffering in silence to restore meaningful connections that were lost during the pandemic,” he said.

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy also posted on X about the vote.

“When I released my Surgeon General’s Advisory on loneliness, I outlined what localities can do to promote connection,” he said. “Grateful to San Mateo County for becoming the first county in America to recognize loneliness as a public health emergency.”

The surgeon general previously said that loneliness leads to poor health outcomes, including heart attack, depression and even early death. 

With the onset of the pandemic, California was the first U.S. state to issue a statewide stay-at-home order on March 19, 2020.

Dr. David Campbell, clinical and program director at Recover Together Bend, an addiction and mental health treatment facility in Oregon, said he agreed with the decision to declare loneliness a public health emergency.

Evidence suggests that those facing high degrees of loneliness may face consequences such as increased risk of heart disease, dementia, substance abuse, obesity, cognitive decline, reduced life satisfaction and even premature death, Campbell warned.

“In order to combat loneliness in an increasingly digital world, we must reevaluate our relationships with social media and the virtual realm, strengthen social communities, dramatically increase mental health awareness and reduce barriers to access, encourage civic engagement, and improve social support systems,” he recommended.

Campbell also suggested that people should get more involved in their community, pursue activities, consider volunteering and spend time with friends or family.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Storms Out Of Hearing As Dem Lawmaker Puts Her On Blast

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) stormed out of a committee meeting on Tuesday as a Democratic lawmaker gave her a reminder about her own recent past during a hearing on crime in Washington, D.C.

Greene, a conspiracy theorist who spoke at a white nationalist event in 2022, went on a lengthy rant on everything from crime in the nation’s capital to gun rights to Donald Trump to Black Lives Matter and beyond.

“That was a lot,” Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) said when she was done, then pointed out what he found “ironic” about Greene talking about crime in Washington, D.C.

“She literally supported an insurrection and attack on the Capitol,” Garcia said.

He said Greene “coddled” the insurrectionists when she visited them last year in jail, where she offered them handshakes and pats on the back and said they were “political prisoners.”

“They actually tried to overthrow our government,” Garcia reminded her.

That caused Greene ― who last month called Hunter Biden a “coward” for leaving a hearing when she was speaking about him ― to walk out of the hearing. She appeared to shout something as she left, but it’s not clear what she tried to say.

“She’s insane,” Garcia later wrote on X:

Garcia last year also lashed out at Greene over her support for those arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 attack.

“The first thing she does is … greets them and hugs them and prays with them and apologizes and is treating them like heroes, and I’m sitting there going, this is disgusting,” Garcia told MeidasTouch co-founder Ben Meiselas in autumn. “These people attacked our government, they tried to overthrow our government.”
