Ex-NFL tight end laughs off negative Travis Kelce comparisons: ‘Leave me alone’

0

Travis Kelce has not been his usually dominant self the last couple months.

Since piling up 303 combined receiving yards in weeks 6 and 7, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end has just 443 yards in eight games, and he has less than 60 yards in five of those contests.

He has just one touchdown in that span.

Kelce is 32 yards away from his eighth consecutive 1,000-yard season, but it’s clear that, as of late, he just hasn’t been the same player.

Fans and even some media have been quick to suggest Kelce’s relationship with Taylor Swift is to blame for the dip in production. Earlier this season, there was evidence Kelce had much better performances with Swift in attendance than without, but that narrative has since died.

But one user on X, formerly Twitter, used the new narrative as a meme.

Someone posted a photo of former NFL tight end Eric Ebron, a one-time Pro Bowler whose career high in yards for a season was 750, with the caption that said, “Travis Kelce ever since he started dating Taylor Swift.”

Someone tagged Ebron, and he saw it, and even he couldn’t help but laugh.

“Leave Me Alone,” he replied with three laughing emojis.

Ebron did have a productive eight-year career with three teams. He caught 351 passes for 3,837 yards and 33 touchdowns With the Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ebron was the 10th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft out of North Carolina.

Kelce recently spoke about his and the Chiefs’ struggles, saying he’s been playing like “dogs—.”

“It’s not just one guy. It’s not just me playing like dogs—. … Everybody’s in this f—ing thing together. … We just gotta bring it together, man.

“Everybody’s gotta just f—ing do their job. Every single play, somebody’s not doing their job. It’s me, one by one, it’s everybody on the team. Whether that’s prep, whether that’s having the confidence and understanding of what the defense is in … how we’re picking up blitzes, how we’re running routes versus certain overages. All of the above.

“We show sparks of what kind of offense we can be. … It just hasn’t been a well-oiled machine like we’ve been in the past, and we just gotta get everybody on the same f—ing page.”

‘I really don’t like this life’

0

Nikola Jokic is the one of the top superstars in the NBA, but it sounds like he wishes he wasn’t.

The defending NBA Finals MVP made headlines after winning his first title when he didn’t sound very excited about the championship parade.

Jokic keeps a low profile as best as he can, but it’s been difficult considering he’s one of the faces of the NBA and stands 7 feet tall.

The two-time NBA MVP is noticed everywhere he goes, and while it does sound nice, he says it’s not as fun as everyone thinks it is.

“Being famous, some people like it, some people don’t. When I finish my career, I really wish nobody knows me. I wish my kid or kids in the future … remember me as a dad. I think that’s gonna be my goal in life,” Jokic told “Curious Mike,” a podcast hosted by his teammate, Michael Porter Jr.

“I really don’t like this life because, at the end of the day, we are just basketball players. We are just good at what we are doing. But the media is something that is around us, and, of course, we are getting paid because of the media, because of our popularity.

Jokic also has another “big goal” in mind of getting rid of his cell phone.

To not have a phone, that’s another big goal of mine. Just to live in the moment, be a normal person,” he said. “Go drink with your buddy or go have lunch or go play with your kids or go ride horses, and nobody’s going to make a big deal of that.”

Al Michaels says he’ll return next season for ‘Thursday Night Football’: ‘I feel good’

Broadcasting legend Al Michaels isn’t going anywhere.

The 79-year-old announcer became the voice of ‘Thursday Night Football’ last year when Amazon Prime got the rights. He signed a three-year contract and plans on seeing it through.

“I feel good,” Michaels told USA Today Sports. “I feel healthy. I feel fine. I told Amazon that I’d do three years and next year will be three, and I’m definitely doing it. We’ll see after that.

“I still love this job. I still get a charge out of going into a stadium and watching the best in the world do what they do. I’m still really happy, so that’s the big thing.”

The comments to the outlet were the first since it was revealed that Michaels would not be a part of NBC’s NFL postseason coverage.

NBC is set to have three playoff games in January. Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth are scheduled to handle two, while Noah Eagle, Todd Blackledge and Kathryn Tappen will be on the the call for one of the doubleheaders early in the month, the New York Post reported earlier in December.

Michaels declined to comment to USA Today on NBC’s decision.

Michaels, paired with ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, has garnered some criticism this season for his apparent lack of enthusiasm in the booth.

Herbstreit defended Michaels on Barstool Sports’ podcast “Pardon My Take” in November, explaining that the value of games being played on Thursday could be to blame.

“I think Al, when he would do ‘Sunday Night Football’ or ‘Monday Night Football,’ those games were massive. You know, you’re doing big games and your voice projects based on the setting that you’re in,” said Herbstreit.

He continued, “And these Thursday night games, they’re good, they’re good atmospheres, but I don’t think they’re at the level of a Sunday night game or when I’m doing these Saturday night games. So, I think your voice always matches with what you’re doing.”

Jets head coach addresses not appearing ‘angry or upset’ after Browns loss

The New York Jets lost their 10th game of the season Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns, who clinched a playoff berth for just the second time since 2002.

It’s been a rough year for the Jets, who lost Aaron Rodgers after just four snaps and have started four different quarterbacks this season.

On Thursday, the Jets committed 12 penalties for 74 yards, a trend that has resulted in New York being the most penalized team in the NFL.

After the game, a reporter told head coach Robert Saleh that he didn’t appear “angry or upset” after another loss.

“Do you want me to throw the podium on the floor?” Saleh asked the reporter before the press conference ended.

While the Jets have struggled to do anything offensively after Rodgers tore his Achilles against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1, the Browns have found their savior following the season-ending injury to Deshaun Watson.

Joe Flacco moved to 4-1 as Cleveland’s starting quarterback after signing with the Browns last month.

Flacco threw for 294 yards in the first half Thursday, finishing the game with 309 passing yards while throwing three touchdown passes and an interception.

“You don’t know how many of these moments you’re going to get,” Flacco said. “I’m going to remember this for the rest of my life.”

Since taking over in Cleveland, Flacco has thrown for at least 300 yards in four of his five starts.

“Everybody always joked, even in Baltimore, was he elite?” Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley said of Flacco, according to ESPN. “He’s showing it. Not a lot of guys, especially veterans like him and his age, just coming from home, hanging with his kids, do what he’s done. I told him after the game, it’s crazy to hear the Browns fans screaming, ‘Flacco!’ That was pretty wild to me, but I’m happy for him. Obviously, we wanted to get the win, but just as a friend, as a fan, I’m definitely happy for him.”

The Browns are still alive for the top spot in the AFC with one game remaining on their schedule.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed a bill that would have banned gender-reassignment treatment for minors and blocked transgender women and girls from participating in female sports leagues in Ohio on Friday.

The Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act, which passed Ohio’s GOP-dominated state legislature earlier this month, was shot down by DeWine who said he could not sign the bill “as it is currently written.”

Mike DeWine speaks during a news conference, Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, in Columbus, Ohio.  DeWine vetoed a measure Friday that would have banned gender-affirming care for minors and transgender athletes’ participation in girls and women’s sports, in a break from members of his party who championed the legislation.  (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

“This bill would impact a very small number of Ohio’s children. But, for those children who face gender dysphoria and for their families, the consequences of this bill could not be more profound,” DeWine said during a press conference.

“Ultimately, I believe this is about protecting human life. Many parents have told me that their child would not have survived, would be dead today if they had not received the treatment they received from one of Ohio’s children’s hospitals. I’ve also been told by those who are now grown adults that but for this care, they would have taken their life when they were teenagers.”

DeWine said he visited several children’s hospitals in the state and spoke with individuals on both sides of the debate before ultimately making his decision. He added, that while ultimately vetoing the bill, there are concerns raised in the legislation that he agrees with that he hopes to address alongside the General Assembly.

The first includes implementing a ban on surgery for minors as part of gender-affirming care, increased reporting on data for those who receive gender affirming care, and lastly putting in place measures that would “prevent pop-up clinics or fly-by-night operations” that try to sell “inaccurate or even ideological treatments” to families or children.

“I truly believe that we can collaborate, find common ground and adopt rules to protect Ohio children, adults and families in this area. It will be my goal in the coming weeks to get these protections adopted through a collaborative and deliberate process.”

In his initial remarks, DeWine did not address the portion of the bill which sought to ban transgender women from girls and women’s sports. During questioning, the Republican governor said he focused on the legislation that “affected the most people and the most children by far.”

Former NCAA Division I swimmer Riley Gaines, who pressured DeWine earlier this week, criticized the decision in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Gov. DeWine has proven himself to be a spineless coward who is unwilling to do the obviously right and moral thing. This veto doesn’t represent the majority of Ohioans, or the majority of Americans. I’m confident and hopeful the Ohio legislature will override his veto.

“A compromise between right and wrong will always be wrong.”

Laws or policies banning gender transition-related health care for minors have passed in 22 states as of November 2023, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Court injunctions are preventing that from going into effect in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida and Indiana.

How tiny corkscrew robots could save lives by breaking up blood clots

0

Blood clots are a serious health problem that can cause strokes, heart attacks and even death.

Some blood clots can be removed by doctors using a flexible tool that goes inside the affected vein or artery, but others are too hard to reach.

What if there was a way to break up those clots without surgery or drugs?

That’s the idea behind a new invention by scientists in the Netherlands.

How does the new invention work?

Scientists have created tiny robots that can swim through your blood vessels and drill into the clots. These robots are called millirobots, and they are about the size of a grain of rice. They have a corkscrew-shaped body that contains a small magnet. The magnet helps them move and steer through the blood.

The millirobots are inserted into the blood vessel through a small tube called a cannula. Then, an external magnet that rotates is used to control them. The external magnet makes the millirobots spin along their axis, which allows them to swim through the blood. They can swim against the direction of the blood flow to reach the clot.

Once they get to the clot, they start drilling into it. This breaks up the clot into smaller pieces that can be carried away by the blood. Then, the external magnet changes the direction of rotation, which makes the millirobots swim back to the cannula. They can then be taken out of the blood vessel.

What testing has been done on the millirobots?

At the Technical Medical Centre of the University of Twente, the researchers set up their experiment with a real aorta and kidneys. The scientists were able to guide multiple millirobots through the vessels and break up clots. They think the millirobots could work even better with a stronger external magnet.

What are the benefits of the millirobots?

The millirobots could offer a new way to treat blood clots that are hard to reach or dissolve. They could reduce the need for surgery or drugs, which can have side effects or complications. They could also deliver drugs to specific places in the body where they are needed the most, such as tumors or infections.

The lead scientist, Asst. Prof. Islam Khalil from the University of Twente, said in an interview, “The robots can deliver drugs to very specific places in the body where the drug is needed the most. That way we have minimal side effects in the rest of the body.”

The technology is being developed further by a partnership between Radboud University Medical Center and Triticum Medical. They hope to make the millirobots more efficient and safe for human use. They also want to explore other applications of the millirobots, such as cleaning arteries or removing plaque.

Kurt’s key takeaways

The millirobots could be a game-changer for treating blood clots and other diseases. They could save lives and improve health outcomes for millions of people. They are an example of how tiny robots can have a big impact.

Pistons lose to Celtics in overtime, tie NBA record with 28th straight loss

0

The Detroit Pistons put up a fight against the league-leading Boston Celtics on Thursday night, but despite opening the first half of the game with their biggest lead of the season, they suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to tie the NBA’s all-time record for the longest losing streak.

The Pistons, who earned their 27th loss of the season to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday to set the NBA record for most consecutive losses in a single season, were hoping to avoid further disasters when they traveled to TD Garden, where the Celtics have been undefeated this season.

“I’ve been in the league for a while and I’ve seen teams give in to circumstances that are less than what we’re dealing with and that was admirable,” head coach Monty Williams said after the game.

The Pistons kept on pace with the Celtics in the first quarter and began to pull away late in the second. They took a 21-point lead with less than a minute remaining in the first half – the first time all season that they led by more than 20 points.

They entered the second half with a 19-point lead that Boston quickly made up for, and the Pistons then rallied from a six-point deficit in the final minutes to force overtime. Eventually, the Celtics would recover with a 128-122 victory.

“Obviously, we had a tough third quarter, and the ability to fight back from that and have an even fourth was tremendous,” Williams continued. “I hurt for them. We feel like we just are getting so close to not just winning one game, but winning a lot of games if we play that way versus most teams in the league.”

“We’re on the same level as all these teams were playing against,” said Detroit guard Cade Cunningham, who had 31 points and nine assists. “There’s no team that I’ve ever come across in the NBA where I felt like I was going into a slaughterhouse. I’ve never felt like that in my life, going into a basketball game.”

They hear everything that people have to say about them and us because they’re on social media, and it doesn’t sway them from doing their jobs but also playing to the level and standard that we talk about every day. You know, we can’t do anything about the noise. We can control how we approach our jobs, and as bad as they hurt right now, I hurt for them.”

The Pistons will need a win at home against the Toronto Raptors on Saturday to avoid setting the NBA record.

Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic perfect from the field, matches Wilt Chamberlain’s triple-double feat

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic had a game to remember on Thursday against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The two-time MVP was essentially “perfect,” shooting 11-11 from the field and 3-3 from the free-throw line as he finished the night with 26 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

It was the 116th regular-season triple-double for Jokic and the third of his career where he was 100% from the field, matching Wilt Chamberlain, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The only blemishes on his stat line were the three turnovers for Jokic, who didn’t miss from the field one game after going 18-18 from the free-throw line against the Golden State Warriors.

“I’ve never seen a triple-double before I played with him, and now I see them all the time,” said second-year player Peyton Watson.

Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was also spectacular in the 142-105 Denver win, shooting 9-12 from the field and finishing the night with 23 points.

“Jamal and Nikola were a combined 20 for 23 tonight, which is incredible,” coach Michael Malone said, according to The Denver Post. “I don’t know how many MVPs you could say this about, but Nikola doesn’t care about, ‘How many shots he’s getting.’

“He was 11 for 11 tonight. He doesn’t care about that. If Jamal has got it going, he’s clapping for Jamal. He takes more joy in his teammates’ success (than his own), and that’s the true definition of being selfless. And he lives it every day.”

The Grizzlies were without the services of star guard Ja Morant, who missed the game in Denver due to an illness. Morant recently returned from a 25-game suspension after a second incident where he appeared to flash a gun on social media.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Memphis, who now sit at 10-20 on the year.

Al Michaels throws shade at Astros after trash-can banging sound heard during ‘Thursday Night Football’

0

Al Michaels has been criticized for over a year now for his seemingly lackadaisical calls on “Thursday Night Football,” but this week he proved he can still hit 100 on the radar gun.

During the second quarter of the Cleveland Browns-New York Jets matchup, an odd sound could be heard in the background.

Clearly, it caught the attention of Michaels.

The longtime play-by-play announcer said someone was pounding on a trash-can.

It was the perfect queue for a joke in sports that will never go away.

“Somebody’s pounding on that trash can, I think the Astros must be in town,” he said.

Of course, the Houston Astros notoriously banged on trash cans to steal signs and tell batters what pitch was coming in real time throughout the 2017 season.

The practice allegedly helped them win their first World Series in franchise history.

ESPN BROADCASTER PAYS HOMAGE TO LEGENDARY YANKEES ANNOUNCER AT END OF PINSTRIPE BOWL

Then-Astros pitcher Mike Fiers was the whistleblower in November 2019, and a few short months later, MLB suspended manager A.J. Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow – Astros owner Jim Crane fired them both.

Alex Cora was also suspended for his role, while the scandal also cost Carlos Beltran his managerial job with the New York Mets before he even filled out a lineup card in spring training.

Rumors have swirled that the Astros adopted further practices in 2018 and 2019 to continue stealing signs, including Jose Altuve wearing a wire when he hit a walk-off home run to send Houston to the 2019 World Series, but those were never proven.

No players were suspended, as MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred granted them immunity in exchange for the truth, a move he has since expressed regret for.

Houston won the 2022 World Series, and this season marked their seventh-consecutive trip to the American League Championship Series, one year shy of the all-time MLB record set by the Atlanta Braves in the 1990s.

Alpha Grill burger-cooking robot. (Aniai)

How would you like to have a burger cooked by a robot in less than 60 seconds? That’s what the Alpha Grill can do. The robot uses artificial intelligence and sensors to adjust the temperature, time and pressure of the grill according to the thickness and weight of the meat. The robot can also detect when the patties are done, and since it cooks both sides simultaneously, there’s no need to flip them over like those grilled the old-fashioned way. It grills the burgers perfectly every time, so there are no worries about overcooking or undercooking. Once the patties are cooked, they are picked up by a human on the cook line, who can then add the toppings and buns of their choice.
