Dolphins splash into playoffs with thrilling win over Cowboys

0

Jason Sanders nailed his fifth field goal of the game as time expired and lifted the Miami Dolphins to a win Sunday evening over the Dallas Cowboys, 22-20.

Miami clinched a playoff spot for the second consecutive season and picked up its first win of the year against a playoff contender in the process. It’s the first time the team clinched a postseason berth in consecutive seasons since 2000 and 2001.

It was a thrilling finish in Miami Gardens.

Dak Prescott and the Cowboys were down 19-13 with 11:06 left in the game, and he guided the team down the field on a 17-play drive that lasted nearly eight minutes. The team tried to score on 4th-and-goal with 4:23 left and missed out, but Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard was called for a penalty.

Then, Prescott was sacked by Andrew Van Ginkel and Bradley Chubb to push them back further. On 3rd-and-goal, Prescott got the ball to Brandin Cooks who somehow came down with the ball in between two defenders for the go-ahead touchdown.

With 3:27 left, it was Tua Tagovailoa’s time. He led the team on a 12-play, 64-yard drive, converting on third down twice to get Sanders in position for the game-winning kick. He nailed it from 29 yards out.

Tagovailoa finished with 293 passing yards and a touchdown pass to Raheem Mostert. The running back led the team with 46 rushing yards on 11 carries. Tyreek Hill had nine catches for 99 yards.

Prescott was 20 of 32 for 253 yards and two touchdown passes. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb had six catches for 118 yards and a score. Tony Pollard led the team with 38 yards on 12 carries.

Not only did Miami clinch the playoff berth, the team remains in contention for home-field advantage. By Monday’s end, the Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens could both be 11-4, should the latter lose to the San Francisco 49ers. Miami also has the inside track to the AFC East title.

Panthers’ Adam Thielen questions officiating after close loss to Packers

0

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Adam Thielen was a bit perturbed over one of the calls that benefited the Green Bay Packers late in the fourth quarter of the Panthers’ 33-30 loss on Sunday.

On 3rd-and-4 with 2:39 left in the game, Packers quarterback Jordan Love found wide receiver Romeo Doubs down the sideline as Doubs seemingly made the catch over a Panthers defensive back. However, it wasn’t exactly clear whether Doubs maintained control of the ball as he hit the ground. The ball appeared to pop out.

The referees determined Doubs maintained possession. The call kept the drive alive and the team scored the go-ahead field goal to avoid the upset.

Thielen thought Doubs dropped the ball.

“Yeah, I saw the whole play,” he said, per the Charlotte Observer. “I saw a catch and then the ball moving as he’s going to the ground. [The] ball moves, controls it again, hits the ground and then loses it again. So, in my opinion, the ball moved twice at two different times. So, there really wasn’t enough time to control the ball.”

Thielen added, “Kind of what you get when you play the Packers.”

The Athletic’s Joe Person relayed the pool report with NFL senior vice president of officiating Walt Anderson after the game. Anderson said officials saw that Doubs had control of the ball with his left hand.

“The ruling on the field, obviously, is where we start. It was a catch and the receiver maintained control throughout the process as he was going to the ground,” Anderson said. “We actually did see the ball touch the ground, but we also saw that he had control of the ball in his left hand.”

“The left hand never came off the ball and there was no available shots that show that he actually lost control of the ball in his left hand even though the ball touched the ground. The ball is allowed to touch the ground as long as there’s not evidence that he lost control, and we didn’t think it was clear and obvious that he did. And since the ruling on the field was a catch, we stayed with the ruling on the field.”

Ex-NFL star Cris Collinsworth raises eyebrows with odd ‘fat’ remark while talking backup QBs

0

NFL broadcaster Cris Collinsworth raised eyebrows with his comments during the Buffalo Bills-Los Angeles Chargers game on Saturday night.

Collinsworth, a former wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals and the color commentator alongside Mike Tirico on NBC’s NFL coverage, took a shot at the weight of some backup quarterbacks in the NFL. The two were talking about Easton Stick making the second start of his NFL career.

“When you’re the backup quarterback, you can go months without even taking a single play in practice,” Collinsworth said. “The starting quarterback, in this case Justin Herbert, would get all the snaps. So, give him a little bit of time. Give him a little practice. Let’s see what happens now.”

Tirico said that notion sounded “insane to fans” and wondered how a team wouldn’t give a backup snaps during a long season.

Blue Jackets’ Sean Kuraly collapses behind team bench after hit in scary scene

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly needed paramedics after he collapsed Saturday night following a hit from Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe.

The incident occurred with less than a minute left in the first period. Kuraly was trying to go for the puck behind the Maple Leafs goaltender when McCabe hit him in the upper body in what seemed to be a routine hockey hit. Kuraly struggled to get back to the bench.

The Bally Sports broadcast watched as trainers helped Kuraly walk back to the locker room through the tunnel. Play on the ice stopped as paramedics came onto the ice and rushed into the tunnel to get to Kuraly. According to the Columbus Dispatch, Kuraly collapsed as he was helped back to the locker room.

The period was suspended with 18.3 seconds left, and the remaining time was played just before the second period began.

Jets pick up victory after blowing 20-point lead against Commanders

0

Greg Zuerlein kicked a 54-yard field goal with 5 seconds left, rescuing the Jets after they blew a 20-point lead in the third quarter, and New York beat the Washington Commanders 30-28 on Sunday.

Jacoby Brissett replaced the benched Sam Howell in the third quarter and led the Commanders on three straight touchdown drives, including Antonio Gibson’s 1-yard run that put Washington ahead 28-27 with 4:52 remaining.

After the Jets (6-9) held Brissett and the Commanders to a three-and-out, they got the ball back with 1:41 remaining. Trevor Siemian marched New York into field goal range and Zuerlein booted the game-winner.

It was the second win in eight games for the Jets, and it came hours after owner Woody Johnson told the New York Post he was bringing back coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas next year.

Siemian finished 27 of 49 for 217 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception in his first start in place of the injured Zach Wilson. Breece Hall ran for 95 yards and two TDs and caught 12 passes for 96 yards in the home finale for New York.

Brissett was 10 of 13 for 100 yards and a touchdown in relief of Howell, who was benched for the second straight game. Howell was 6 of 22 for 56 yards and two interceptions with a 1.7 rating for the Commanders (4-11), who have dropped six straight.

Chris Rodriguez had two touchdown runs for Washington, who looked to be out of it early before Brissett helped lead an impressive comeback.

In a matchup of the Commanders’ 32nd-ranked defense against the Jets’ NFL-worst offense, New York gained the upper hand early.

JETS’ JORDAN WHITEHEAD SMACKS REF IN FACE CELEBRATING SACK ON COMMANDERS’ SAM HOWELL

New York took a 3-0 lead just two minutes in on Zuerlein’s 25-yarder after Tony Adams intercepted Howell’s pass intended for Logan Thomas. It was Howell’s NFL-leading 16th interception.

The Jets got another takeaway on the Commanders’ next drive when Jermaine Johnson blocked Tress Way’s punt. New York got the ball at Washington’s 9 and Siemian found undrafted rookie Jason Brownlee, for an 8-yard touchdown — the first score of Brownlee’s career — to take a 10-0 lead.

It was the Jets’ second touchdown in the opening quarter this season, and they weren’t done.

After New York forced a three-and-out and Washington was penalized for an illegal touch on its punt, the Jets started their third straight drive in Commanders territory — and again took advantage. On second down, Hall took the handoff from Siemian and zipped into the end zone for a 36-yard touchdown to make it 17-0 less than six minutes in.

The Jets got another takeaway in the second quarter when Ashtyn Davis recovered Jamison Crowder’s fumbled punt return and New York turned it into a 27-yard field goal by Zuerlein to take a 20-0 lead.

Washington benefited from its own takeaway late in the second half when Siemian couldn’t handle Joe Tippmann’s high snap and Casey Toohill recovered. Rodriguez took the handoff on first down and ran for about 7 yards and then was helped the next 5 yards into the end zone by a scrum of Commanders for his first career TD to make it 20-7.

Hall gave the Jets a 20-point lead again when he ran for a 2-yard touchdown.

But then came Washington’s comeback.

Quincy Williams intercepted Howell in the third quarter for New York’s third takeaway, but Cody Barton intercepted Siemian three plays later and returned it 52 yards.

Brissett replaced Howell and promptly led a scoring drive, connecting with Thomas for a 15-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-14.

Rodriguez ran from 1 yard out for his second touchdown with 9:33 left to make it 27-21, two plays after a questionable pass interference call on D.J. Reed in the end zone moved the ball from the 22 to the 1.

Jordan Love, Packers avoid Panthers upset with clutch go-ahead field goal

0

Jordan Love threw for two touchdowns, ran for one and made two big completions to set up Anders Carlson’s 32-yard field goal with 19 seconds left, and the Green Bay Packers survived a fourth-quarter rally by Carolina to beat the Panthers 33-30 on Sunday and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Love threw touchdown passes of 21 yards to rookie Dontayvion Wicks and 5 yards to Romeo Dobbs and scored on a quarterback sneak as the Packers snapped a two-game losing streak. Aaron Jones became the first Packers player this season to exceed 100 yards rushing or receiving in a game, rushing for 127 yards on 21 carries.

The Packers (7-8) remain one game behind the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams in the NFC wild-card race.

Bryce Young threw for a career-high 312 yards with two touchdown passes to DJ Chark for the Panthers (2-13), who failed to build on the momentum of last week’s 9-7 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

For a brief stretch in the fourth quarter, it looked like Carolina might pull off an improbable rally.

The Panthers trailed by 14 when Young threw an 11-yard pass to Chark on a slant route to make it 30-22 with 7:14 remaining. Young appeared to scramble for the 2-point conversion, but the Panthers were called for holding and Eddy Pineiro missed his second extra point of the game.

After a defensive stand, the Panthers got the ball back and Young found Chark again in the right corner of the end zone for a diving 10-yard TD. Raheem Blackshear then tied the game at 30, scoring on a pitchout for the 2-point conversion.

But Love came through for the Packers. He completed a 36-yard strike on third-and-4 to Dobbs, who hauled in a catch near the sideline that Fox Sports rules analyst Dean Blandino said on television should have been overturned.

Love, who finished 17 of 28 for 219 yards, followed with a 20-yard completion to rookie tight end Tucker Kraft to reach the Carolina 13, setting up Carlson’s kick.

Carolina had one last chance. Young completed a 22-yard pass to Chark on the sideline to stop the clock and then threw over the middle to Adam Thielen for 22 yards. But the Panthers, without any timeouts, were unable to spike the ball before time expired.

The Packers were efficient on offense in the first half, scoring on their first four possessions to build a 23-10 lead by halftime.

Falcons’ playoff hopes stay alive with win over Colts

0

Taylor Heinicke provided the turnover-free leadership at quarterback Atlanta has sought all season, passing for 229 yards and a touchdown to lead the Falcons to a 29-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

The Falcons (7-8) benched Desmond Ridder this week for the second time this season following two straight losses, providing an opportunity for Heinicke to boost the team’s fading playoff hopes.

Heinicke delivered, completing 23 of 33 passes, including a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Pitts. Tyler Allgeier added a 31-yard touchdown run. The Falcons’ 29 points set a season high.

The Colts (8-7) had won five of six to move into a first-place tie in the AFC South but struggled offensively after opening the game with a long drive capped by Jonathan Taylor’s 1-yard scoring run.

Gardner Minshew faced frequent pressure from the Falcons’ pass rush, including on an incomplete fourth-down pass from the Atlanta 38 with about 10 minutes remaining.

The Colts’ next drive ended with Jessie Bates’ interception of Minshew’s pass over the middle intended for Alex Pierce. It was Bates’ sixth interception of the season.

The Falcons’ finish will determine the future of third-year coach Arthur Smith. Team owner Arthur Blank said this week he would wait until after the regular season to make a decision on Smith’s status.

For the second time this season, Smith shaved his mustache before the game, perhaps hoping to change his team’s luck following back-to-back losses to NFC South rivals Tampa Bay and Carolina. Last weekend’s 9-7 loss to last-place Carolina knocked Atlanta out of a first-place tie in the division.

The Falcons’ fading hopes in the division were helped by New Orleans’ 30-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday.

FALCONS, HEAD COACH ARTHUR SMITH RECEIVE FINES FOR NOT DISCLOSING STAR PLAYER’S ILLNESS BEFORE GAME

With running back Bijan Robinson lined up wide left as a receiver, Allgeier scored on the long run around right end to give the Falcons a 20-7 lead to open the second half.

Robinson, a rookie, had 12 carries for 72 yards and a career-high seven catches for 50 yards.

Atlanta’s defense gave up its first touchdown on an opening drive of the season. Taylor needed three runs from the Atlanta 1 before scoring.

Taylor made his return from a Week 12 thumb injury against Tampa Bay. It also was the first rushing touchdown the Falcons have given up to a running back this season.

The Falcons’ defense shut out the Colts the remainder of the first half. Rookie Zach Harrison recorded a sack for the second straight week. Calais Campbell and Arnold Ebiketie shared a sack on the following play late in the opening quarter.

The Falcons recorded six sacks, including 1 1/2 by Campbell.

Younghoe Koo kicked five field goals. With the scored tied at 7-all, Koo had a 49-yard attempt hit the right upright in the second quarter, but an offsides penalty against the Colts led to a 23-yarder by Koo for the lead.

INJURY REPORT

Colts: WR Michael Pittman (concussion, shoulder) and RB Zack Moss (forearm) did not play. Pittman was cleared from the concussion protocol on Friday and traveled with the team to Atlanta before being ruled out Saturday after again experiencing more symptoms. … SS Julian Blackmon left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper has thrived over the last two games and his dominance continued against the Houston Texans on Sunday as he set a franchise record for receiving yards in a game.

With Joe Flacco slinging the pill, Cooper had 11 catches for 265 yards and two touchdowns. His day got started early when he and Flacco connected for a 75-yard touchdown connection. He picked up his second touchdown grab in the third quarter. It was a 7-yarder to go up 28-7.

Geno Smith’s late-game heroics lead Seahawks to stunning victory

0

Geno Smith threw his second touchdown pass of the fourth quarter on a 5-yarder to Colby Parkinson with 57 seconds left and the Seattle Seahawks kept their playoff hopes alive by beating the Tennessee Titans 20-17 Sunday for their second straight victory.

The Seahawks (8-7) still need to win out and get some help to clinch their second playoff berth in three seasons.

They started slowly after beating Philadelphia on Monday night and traveling cross country for the early kickoff. Smith, who missed the past two games with an injured groin, gave the Seahawks their first lead at 13-10 when he found DK Metcalf in the left corner for an 11-yard TD with 12:10 left.

Derrick Henry put Tennessee back up 17-13 with a 2-yard TD run with 3:21 left.

Smith responded by driving the Seahawks 75 yards over 14 plays for the win.

Tennessee had a final chance. But Boye Mafe led Seattle with two sacks, including one to start the Titans’ last drive. Ryan Tannehill hit Colton Dowell for a 3-yard pass as the rookie ran out of bounds. Officials kept the clock going, and the final seconds ticked off without another play.

Eliminated from the playoffs last week, the Titans (5-10) lost consecutive games for the third time this season. They have lost at least 10 games for a second straight season since going 5-27 combined over 2014-15.

Henry threw a 12-yard TD pass to Chig Okonkwo early in the second quarter. The Titans outgained Seattle 287-273.

Tennessee played without seven starters — five on defense after placing two-time Pro Bowl lineman Jeffery Simmons on injured reserve Saturday and safety Amani Hooker.

Nick Folk extended his NFL record to 78 consecutive made field goals of 40 yards or closer with a 33-yarder in the second quarter, giving Tennessee a 10-3 halftime lead.

The Vikings then took a 21-17 lead in the third quarter when Mullens hit K.J. Osborn for a 6-yard touchdown pass. But the Lions answered with a Jared Goff touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Gibbs ran for a touchdown in the fourth to go up 30-21.
