Which apps are collecting the most data on you?

The number of apps that collect detailed personal data might surprise you. That includes some of the top apps on the App Store and Google Play Store. What I love doing most as the CyberGuy is making a difference in informing you about the power you need to protect yourself, especially your privacy.

AtlasVPN has released a new report that lists the shopping apps that collect the most data on you. Topping the chart was eBay. According to AtlasVPN, eBay’s Android app grabs 28 data points. Here’s a look at the top 10:

1. EBay

2. Amazon Shopping

3. Afterpay

4. Lowe’s

5. iHerb

6. Vinted

7. The Home Depot

8. Alibaba

9. Poshmark

10. Nike

All of these apps collect at least 18 data points on you. While some of that information can be data performance or app activity to help developers, some apps collect financial and personal data.

Privacy concerns you should have about shopping apps

According to the report, 58% of shopping apps on the Google Play Store share your personal information with third-party companies. That’s information like your name, email address, phone number and even home address. Those firms are not affiliated with the app and can use your data for whatever they’d like.

52% of shopping apps share your device ID with third-party companies

And even more startling, 52% of shopping apps share your device ID with third-party companies. Device IDs are specific codes used to identify every phone and tablet in the world. That means more than half of the top shopping apps on the Google Play Store are tracking your exact device.

More than a third of the shopping apps analyzed gave users’ financial data to third parties. That includes purchase history and payment information.

Responses to our privacy inquiry

We reached out to all 10 of these shopping apps, and these are the companies that we received responses from as of our deadline.

Home Depot said through a spokesperson,

“I can tell you we value our customers’ privacy and respect their information and privacy rights. We use the information customers provide us in innovative ways to improve and personalize the customer experience, process their information, and keep things running smoothly.”

Home Depot spokesperson went on to say that the company has a privacy and security statement available online and via their apps, which can be found here.

Home Depot also has controls in place to protect personal information. These controls include limiting what information is shared. In addition, Home Depot customers have the ability to block the sending of personal information for those who have opted out of sharing their information for targeted advertising in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

Amazon also responded to our request, and a company spokesperson had this to say,

“We collect, process, and share customers’ personal information to provide a great shopping experience, and use it only as described in our Privacy Notice. We are not in the business of selling our customers’ personal information to others.”

7 ways to protect your privacy when using shopping apps

1) Research the information each app collects before you download it. In the App Store, you can simply click on the app, scroll to the App Privacy section, and click See Details. Android users can find the app in the Google Play Store, click on it, and select Data Safety. For Amazon, we recommend you change these 6 important Amazon privacy settings right now.

2) Avoid downloading less trustworthy apps like TEMU altogether, and I certainly wouldn’t share my data with them. If, for some reason, you do have an app like this on your phone, delete it immediately. There is a possibility that they may collect and share personal information with other third parties, which could put your sensitive information at risk. If you have used them, you will want to monitor your bank accounts and freeze or even cancel any credit cards.

3) Review the app permissions before installing or updating an app. Some apps may ask for access to your camera, microphone, location, contacts, or other sensitive data. You can choose to deny or revoke these permissions if you think they are unnecessary or intrusive to the app’s functionality.

4) Use a VPN when browsing or shopping online. A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your internet traffic and hides your IP address, making it harder for third-party companies to track your online activity and collect your data. There are many VPN services available, some of which are free or offer a trial period. You can also use a VPN app on your mobile device for extra security. 5) Clear your cache and cookies regularly. Cache and cookies are files that store information about your browsing history, preferences, and login details. They can also be used by advertisers and trackers to monitor your online behavior and target you with ads. You can clear your cache and cookies from your browser settings or use a private browsing mode that does not store them.

6) Use a password manager to create and store strong and unique passwords for each app and website you use. Password managers are applications that generate and store complex passwords for you, so you don’t have to remember them or use the same one for multiple accounts. This can prevent hackers from accessing your accounts and stealing your data. Some password managers also offer features like autofill, password sharing, and two-factor authentication.

7) Opt out of personalized ads and data sharing. Some apps and websites may offer you the option to opt out of personalized ads and data sharing with third-party companies. This can reduce the amount of data that is collected and used to target you with ads. You can usually find these options in the app or website settings, privacy policy, or terms of service.

Super Bowl champ Derrick Ward faces 5 felony robbery charges

Derrick Ward, a Super Bowl champion running back with the New York Giants, faces five second-degree robbery charges in Southern California, according to online court records.

All five charges were felonies. He was still in custody as of Thursday.

Ward was arrested in Los Angeles on Monday and booked into Valley Jail in Van Nuys. He was being held on $250,000 bail. Ward is accused of being involved in multiple robberies across the city and using force to get money from several businesses, including gas stations, according to TMZ.

The 43-year-old was a seventh-round pick of the New York Jets in the 2004 draft out of Fresno State and later Ottawa University in Kansas. He was cut by the Jets before he played a game.

He would eventually spend five years with the Giants and was part of a three-headed monster running back corps that included Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. The group was nicknamed “Earth, Wind and Fire.”

During the 2007 season, the Giants running backs helped the team make the Super Bowl and upset the undefeated New England Patriots led by Tom Brady.

Ward joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009 after running for more than 1,000 yards and leading the league in yards per attempt (5.6) with the Giants in 2008. He played for the Houston Texans for the final two years of his career – 2010 and 2011. He retired from the NFL in 2012.

Tiki Barber, Ward’s former teammate with the Giants, told the New York Post he was dismayed to hear about the arrest.

“It’s just sad to hear,” he said. “He was from a rough environment, and it felt like he was at a point in his life where he escaped it. It’s shocking because I feel like he got his life right.”

What is the R550X?

How does the autonomous helicopter work?

The R550X works by using a combination of hardware and software components. The hardware includes the helicopter frame, engine, rotor system, fuel system, landing gear, cargo bay and mission payload. The software includes the flight control system, navigation system, communication system, and mission management system.

The Christmas holiday falls on a Monday this year, and the NFL has taken advantage by putting games across the weekend from Dec. 23 and into Christmas Day.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs welcome the Las Vegas Raiders into Arrowhead Stadium on Monday for a 1 p.m. ET start. While it is a joyous season for most people, Mahomes suggested in a recent interview he was not too keen on playing on Christmas Day.

The E-GO has a 4K/30fps camera with a new wide-angle lens that can capture stunning underwater images and videos.

The E-GO has two externally mounted lithium batteries that can be replaced with freshly charged ones without having to power down. This gives the E-GO an uninterrupted endurance of over 2.5 hours. The batteries are also fast-charging, reaching 90% power in 50 minutes.

Customers can enter the store, take the items they want, and leave without having to check out or pay at a counter. The items are automatically detected and charged to the customer’s Amazon account.

Zara, the fashion retailer, has implemented RFID tags in its clothing items to improve its inventory management and customer service. Customers can use self-checkout kiosks that scan the RFID tags and accept various payment methods. The kiosks also provide suggestions for complementary products and accessories, based on the customer’s purchase history and preferences. Inditex, the parent company of Zara, tells us that it “is now implementing a new in-store security technology (adapting several existing technologies by our own teams) that will eliminate hard tags and will be rolled out to all Zara stores worldwide in 2024.”

Walmart is testing a new checkout system that uses RFID scanners to track the items and bags of customers who scan their own products using a handheld device or their smartphone. The system also uses audio sensors to detect the sound of scanning and bagging, and to alert the staff if an item is missed.

Uniqlo, a casual apparel retailer, uses RFID technology to improve its checkout process. RFID chips are embedded in price tags and can be read by machines that automatically calculate the total amount. Uniqlo claims that RFID has reduced out-of-stock items and improved customer satisfaction.

Ex-NFL star RG3 claps back at former Steelers player over racial bowl post

Former NFL star Robert Griffin III addressed former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall’s racial bowl proposal, which had been the talk of the sports world this week.

Griffin put out a video on X pushing back on any notion of a “segregation bowl” because he does not want to go back to that time and joked that he would not be on the All-Black team anyway because of Patrick Mahomes.

He added there may even be a debate for him to join the All-White team because of a comment sports pundit Rob Parker made in 2012 and that he married a woman who is White.

“Dear Rashard Mendenhall,” Griffin began, “Some people joke about how you fumbled in the Super Bowl. But they never got there. They’ll joke about how you have CTE. They may even spend hours putting together an All-White and an All-Black team and try to explain who would win.

Mendenhall wrote on X on Monday that he was sick of “average white guys commenting on football” and proposed that the Pro Bowl should be segregated between the Black and White stars of the NFL.

“I’m sick of average white guys commenting on football. Y’all not even good at football. Can we please replace the Pro Bowl with an All-Black vs. All-White bowl so these cats can stop trying to teach me who’s good at football. I’m better than ur goat,” he wrote.

The Miami Dolphins hit the 10-win mark last season for the first time since 2020 and only the third time since 2015. Three of their four losses this season have come against top-tier teams in the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

The losses sparked conversation that the Dolphins do not possess the ability to defeat good teams, causing speculation over whether they will be able to win games in the playoffs down the road.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about the narrative about their record against contenders and whether he had any thoughts on it.

“The thoughts are firmly with getting better from this previous game and as I talked to the team today, I instructed the players that anything other than to concern yourself with the next opponent, which for us is the Dallas Cowboys, any other narrative that has to do with good teams or playoff seeds or the next three games, all that stuff,” McDaniel said.

“I gave them the clearance to tell all members of the media to – with all due respect – eff off, with all due respect. … Because all we’re focused on is the Dallas Cowboys and they definitely deserve our attention. So as we clean up our game from the previous, we’ll be thinking about that, and the narratives will be what they be and we’re not really concerned. We now that’s going to exist but it’s really inconsequential for what we’re trying to do.”

Miami is at home to welcome the Cowboys on Sunday. After that, the team hits the road against potential playoff matchups against the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills.
