Hearing aids have come a long way from the ones our grandparents used to wear.

Some designers have added “bling” to hearing devices, transforming them into fashion statements rather than obligatory items to be hidden.

Fox News Digital spoke to several audiologists who often refer their patients to these designer merchants — including independent vendors on Etsy, Instagram and other websites — to find unique accessories that personalize and beautify their hearing aids.

DEAF GIRL FINALLY TELLS SANTA WHAT SHE WANTS FOR CHRISTMAS AFTER ELF HELPS HER ‘SIGN’ HER WISH LIST

Available designs include diamond-encrusted attachments, crystal or silver charms and chains — even superhero charms for children.

Some vendors even offer colorful and pearl-clasped molds worn around the ear to help people accentuate their style.

DeafMetal USA is an Indiana-based company that specializes in aesthetics in products for hearing loss (sample product shown above). The jewelry is typically attached through a clasp that hugs onto a piece of the hearing aid, several of these vendors told Fox News Digital.

“Not only do they look stunning, but our chains and cuffs offer a functional purpose by keeping the hearing aids from falling off the ear. They are also perfect for physically active individuals or sports enthusiasts,” the Indiana-based designer company Deafmetal USA states on its website.

Not your grandfather’s hearing aids

Suzannah Parker, owner of Purple Cat Hearing Aid Charms in Colorado, began designing charms and jewelry attachments for hearing aids when she became aware that her daughter was hard of hearing and needed to be fitted with hearing aids when she was three years old.

Worried that her daughter would be teased by others, Parker began looking for ways to make hearing aids a fun experience.

“I was able to fashion a way to hang earrings safely from the tubing of her aids,” Parker told Fox News Digital. “She loved them and so did the people in her audiologist’s office. She was so proud to show them off to strangers.”

Parker began making these attachments for other children and later launched her company.

“I decided to do what I could to help make other girls and boys proud to wear their aids, to make it fun and to maybe stop bullying,” she said.

Parker also designed attachments to hold the hearing aids in place and even attach to clothing in case they fall out.

“The charms are a doorway to the conversation about hearing aids and what they are.”

“My goal is for hearing devices to be looked upon as normally as glasses are,” she told Fox News Digital.

Another designer, Florida-based Nikki Seagraves, told Fox News Digital that she creates hearing aid charms to help instill confidence and pride in those who wear them.

“The charms are a doorway to the conversation about hearing aids and what they are, while still focusing on the fun,” said Seagraves, who launched a company called Whatnot and Wonder.

“It gives other people an easier way to ask about hearing aids instead of shying away or making assumptions.”

“You don’t have to hide your hearing loss or your hearing aids — there are options now,” an audiologist told Fox News Digital. (Jolene Broad Photography for DeafMetal USA)

Multiple audiologists told Fox News Digital that these fashionable hearing aids may have growing appeal to younger adults, among whom hearing loss is becoming more prevalent.

“Hearing loss is being detected in those in their 40s due to noise population,” Dr. Tanya Linzalone, an audiologist on Long Island, New York, and an adjunct professor in the Speech and Communications Department at Long Island University in Brookville, New York, told Fox News Digital.

In addition to the more fashion-forward designs, advances in Bluetooth technology could help younger adults adjust to the notion of wearing hearing aids, Linzalone said.

AS EYE DROP RECALLS CONTINUE, HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO PROTECT YOUR VISION

“They don’t have to finagle the device like their grandpa’s volume wheel,” Linzalone said.

Hearing loss can be socially isolating, said Dr. Leslie Rosenthal, director of speech and audiology and an audiologist at LIJ Northwell Health Hearing and Speech Center on Long Island, New York.

While a hearing aid is a necessity for some, Rosenthal believes it can double as an accessory — and that all patients, from children and young adults to older individuals, should wear them proudly.

“You don’t have to hide your hearing loss or your hearing aids — there are options now,” she said.

Linzalone agreed that hearing aids have evolved a great deal over the decades.

“When I started over 34 years ago, hearing aids were only available in skin colors or hair colors to make them as invisible as possible,” she told Fox News Digital. “Now they come in colors like purple, fire engine red, neon green and yellow.”

‘ZOOM FATIGUE’ IS A COMMON STRUGGLE FOR REMOTE WORKERS. HERE’S HOW TO HANDLE IT, ACCORDING TO EXPERTS

Others reiterated that hearing aids have come a long way in terms of both features and style.

“Many are discreet and even fashionable — similar to today’s trendy headphones,” Dr. Maria Pomponio, an audiologist at Stony Brook University Hospital in New York, told Fox News Digital.

“Ultimately, we hope that aesthetic changes to these devices will be useful in reducing the stigma associated with hearing loss and hearing aids.”

Hearing loss affects about 60.7 million Americans age 12 and older and over 15% of adults 20 and older, according to a November report by the National Council on Aging.

The condition affects some 31% of people age 65 and older and 40% of those 75 and older.

One of the major obstacles in addressing hearing loss is patients’ noncompliance with wearing a hearing aid, experts told Fox News Digital.

“If you bought it and don’t wear it, it’s useless. If making it more cosmetically appealing helps, then go for it,” Linzalone said.

People have a fundamental need to belong, said Dr. Nancy Frye, Ph.D., a psychologist and professor of psychology at Long Island University in Brookville, New York.

ALL EYES ARE ON GLAUCOMA, THE ‘SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT’ — AND THE TRUTH BEHIND 7 MYTHS

“Because of that, people are reluctant to do things that might make them feel like they don’t fit in with others, including wearing a hearing aid,” she told Fox News Digital.

In some cases, people might opt to miss out on conversations and downplay their hearing loss rather than stand out, Frye added.

Unaddressed hearing loss contributes to social withdrawal and isolation, Dr. Jamie Cluna, an audiologist at Stony Brook University Hospital, agreed.

“Older adults with hearing loss are also at a greater risk for depression, cognitive decline, falls and dementia,” she told Fox News Digital.

What to know when purchasing hearing aid accessories

Dr. Ashutosh Kacker, an ear, nose and throat doctor, and Dr. Haley Bruce, an audiologist — both of Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City — cautioned that if a person uses charms or accessories that attach to their hearing aid, it is important not to cover the microphone, as this will interfere with the hearing aid’s effectiveness.

“An audiologist needs to communicate with their patients … and have a lifestyle analysis to pick the right unit for them,” Linzalone told Fox News Digital.

Based on their needs, preferences and activities, different people may need different types of aids even if their hearing loss is the same, she added.

Michigan wins College Football Playoff National Championship over Washington

Michigan wins College Football Playoff National Championship over Washington

The Michigan Wolverines defeated the Washington Huskies, 34-13, to win the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship.

Michigan has won its 10th title in school history, capping a perfect 15-0 season under Jim Harbaugh in dominant fashion in Houston at NRG Stadium.

Like they have so many times this season, the Wolverines used their bruising, explosive run game to set the tone all game long thanks to Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards, who both scored two touchdowns in this one.

Meanwhile, Michigan’s defense disrupted Huskies star quarterback Michael Penix Jr. all game long, as he was held to just one touchdown pass and 255 yards passing on 27-for-51 through the air.

The run game for Michigan had a whopping 303 yards on the ground – the most allowed by the Huskies all season – and immediately made an impact on the first drive of the game thanks to Edwards.

Edwards hadn’t scored since the Penn State game back on Nov. 11, but he saw a giant hole on the left side of the line of scrimmage and used his blazing speed to go 41 yards for the score, quickly putting the Wolverines up 7-0.

FROM OUTKICK: CFP COMMITTEE MEMBERS INFORMED FBI OF DEATH THREATS RECEIVED FOR FSU-ALABAMA DECISION

The Huskies looked to respond on the ensuing drive, and though they got to first-and-goal from the 10-yard line, Penix & Co. were forced to kick a field goal. And though it was points on the board to start the game, Michigan quickly found the colored paint again on the back of an even longer run from Edwards – 46 yards with yet another gaping hole to run through.

After the Huskies went three-and-out, it seemed this game was going to get out of hand because they couldn’t stop Michigan’s run game. A field goal added by the Wolverines made it 17-3, and Penix continued to struggle to get a touchdown on the board.

That was until this game got much closer when the Huskies forced a turnover on downs, and Penix used good field position to fire a touchdown pass to Jalen McMillan.

Unfortunately for the Huskies, it was the only touchdown pass he’d throw in this game, where Michigan held them to just three points in the second half.

Momentum could’ve swung to begin that half, with the Huskies getting the ball down one touchdown. But Will Johnson intercepted Penix’s first pass intended for Rome Odunze on the left sideline.

While Michigan only got a field goal out of it, the momentum quickly swung back to the Wolverines’ sideline.

A wave of punts thanks to good defense on both sides ensued until Corum finally got his crack at the end zone, going 12 yards on second-and-7 for his first of the night.

Then, Penix threw his second interception of the half on fourth-and-13, which Mike Sainristil returned 81 yards to the Washington 8-yard line. Corum would bust his second in two plays later.

Corum would finish the game with 134 yards on the ground on 21 rushes, while Edwards needed just six touches to go 104 yards. Colston Loveland was the top receiver for the Wolverines, catching three of McCarthy’s passes for 64 yards. McCarthy only passed 18 times, completing 10 of them for 140 yards.

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant will miss the rest of the season with a serious shoulder injury, the team announced on Monday.

The Grizzlies said Morant suffered a “subluxation of his right shoulder” at a training session on Saturday. After experiencing ongoing soreness, the team said he had an MRI and it revealed he was dealing with an “underlying labral tear.”

The star point guard will have season-ending surgery and is expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Morant returned to the floor after a 25-game suspension for his social media antics with guns. He scored 34 points, including the game-winning in his first game back against the New Orleans Pelicans.

In nine games, he was averaging 25.1 points, 8.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game.

His suspension came as a result of multiple gun incidents, coming to a head with a second incident when he was caught on social media video holding the weapon. The first game earlier in the year, when he appeared to hold a gun in a Denver strip club, he missed eight games over that incident. He was never charged.

Aside from the gun videos, Morant is in a legal battle stemming from a fight he got into at his house with a then-17-year-old. Four days earlier, Morant had allegedly “threatened” the head of security at a Memphis mall, and a member of Morant’s group shoved him in the head.

How should I care for my skin during winter?

How should I care for my skin during winter?

Winter can wreak havoc on the skin — but there are smart steps to take to protect and nourish it during the colder months.

“Most people know the impact that the summer weather and UV rays can have on the skin, but not everyone is aware that they need to take just as much care of the skin in colder winter months,” Dr. Dave Reilly, a U.K.-based skin care research scientist for the Absolute Collagen company, told Fox News Digital in an email.

“With the humidity of summer gone and the dry winter air coming in, you may notice your skin feels less hydrated, leading to drier, duller and more sensitive skin that is prone to redness and cracking.”

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR FACE? DERMATOLOGISTS REVEAL THE TRUTH

The key to keeping skin looking fresh is to maintain its moisture, Reilly noted.

“Drinking plenty of water and staying on top of SPF is important all year round, but it can also be beneficial to winter-proof your skin care routine with a more intense nighttime ritual, as well as investing in home products like humidifiers,” he said.

An expert shares steps you can take to protect and nourish your skin during the colder months. (iStock)

Below are five ways to ensure that your skin stays supple and “glowy” throughout the winter.

1. Drink plenty of water

Drinking water in summer can feel like second nature, as the hot temperatures make us crave cold drinks, but our thirst response diminishes in winter because we lose less body water through sweat, Reilly said.

HEALTHY AGING AND DRINKING WATER: FASCINATING FINDINGS FROM A NEW STUDY

It is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day, even in cold weather, the skin care expert noted.

“If you struggle to stay on top of this, you could pick up a time-marked water bottle to keep by your desk or to bring along with you as a reminder to keep sipping to stay hydrated,” he suggested.

2. Boost with supplements

Supplements are available that can help boost the brightness of your skin, according to the team at Absolute Collagen.

Woman taking supplements

“The body naturally produces collagen to support healthy and firmer skin, and by taking collagen supplements, you can boost your natural glow,” an expert told Fox News Digital. (iStock)

“The body naturally produces collagen to support healthy and firmer skin, and by taking collagen supplements, you can boost your natural glow,” said Reilly.

HOW TO WEAR SUNSCREEN THE RIGHT WAY: YOUR GUIDE TO SPF

It can also be beneficial to take vitamin D supplements, particularly during the winter months, he noted, as the shorter days mean we don’t get enough high-quality sunlight for our bodies to generate their own.

3. Don’t toss the SPF

While sunscreen is emphasized more during the summer, when the sun is more intense, experts agree that it’s just as important to apply SPF in the winter.

“There is still a considerable amount of UV radiation during the winter that can cause damage,” said Reilly.

While sunscreen doesn’t eliminate exposure to all harmful UV rays, an SPF factor of 30 will block out 97% of them, experts say.

It’s also important to make sure your sunscreen offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

4. Keep your skin moisturized

Turning on the heat in your home can dry out indoor air, which can also impact the skin.

To counteract this, Reilly suggested investing in a humidifier to return some moisture to the air.

Using moisturizing face masks is a good way to keep the skin hydrated, say skin care experts.  (iStock)

Using moisturizing face masks is another good way to keep the skin hydrated, according to skin care experts.

The best moisturizing ingredients to look for when making or purchasing face masks include honey, yogurt, avocado and banana.

5. Adjust your skin care routine

Although you don’t have to do a total overhaul of your skin care routine, creating a more moisture-intensive routine at night and investing in products to lock in moisture can keep the skin feeling hydrated and fresh during the day, said Reilly.

“Products like glycerin or rose water mix are great to apply on top of moisturizers, creams and oils to ensure that the products are protected and your skin can fully absorb them,” he added.

Adding a lip balm to your winter skin care routine is just as essential as a moisturizer or SPF, Reilly noted.

The Michigan Wolverines got out to a fast start in the National Championship against the Washington Huskies on Monday night, and it was primarily thanks to running back Donovan Edwards.

Edwards scored two touchdowns on Michigan’s first two drives of the game. The Wolverines ran a total of 12 plays on their initial drives and ended with the same result — an Edwards touchdown.

He started the game with a 41-yard touchdown run and then scored on a 46-yard touchdown run. He only touched the ball twice.

Michigan led the game 14-3 in the first quarter.

Michigan was looking for its first national title since 1997.

Edwards, a junior, entered the game with 393 rushing yards and 249 receiving yards this season. He had three total touchdowns before he scored against Washington.

“Every kid wants to be at this stage, wants to be here. Whether everything has gone right for you or hasn’t, you have to sit down with yourself and just embrace where you are,” he said last week, via Sports Illustrated.

“There is only two teams playing still in college football, so to be one of the teams still playing, it’s a blessing, because when you’re a kid you want to do certain things, win a high school ring, National Championship ring, professional ring.

Michigan and Washington will battle for a national championship on Monday night, but as storms passed through the Houston area, NRG Stadium’s roof appeared to leak.

Videos posted to X showed water trickling down from the roof near the pylon of Michigan’s end zone. The roof was shut, but it didn’t appear to stop the elements from getting in the way.

Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson wrote on X that a security person at the stadium told Wall Street Journal’s Laine Higgins the roof was indeed leaking. He added that Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio walked by and was “similarly puzzled.”

Severe weather across the south had some parts under a tornado watch. Storms raged from Texas to Georgia and will be by the Carolinas later in the night. According to Fox Weather, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed a large area of the Gulf Coast in a Level 3 out of 5 on its thunderstorm risk scale for Monday night.

The Green Bay Packers are heading to the playoffs, and cornerback Jaire Alexander wanted to show his excitement for it during a live broadcast outside Lambeau Field on Monday morning following the team’s win over the Chicago Bears that secure their spot.

But here’s the hilarious catch: The reporter, Emily Roberts from WBAY, didn’t know a Packers player bombed her broadcast shot.

Instead, Roberts believed Alexander was simply a big Packers fan that was excited for the team’s Wild Card Round matchup against the Dallas Cowboys this upcoming Sunday.

“I’m just here to tell you, ‘Pack is back!’” Alexander said, while adding his “seatbelt” celebration that many cornerbacks in the NFL do following a pass breakup.

That’s all Alexander said before jumping off camera. Then, came Roberts’ response.

“You heard it from a fan right here: Pack is back!” she said.

Roberts also mentioned that tickets were ranging from $200 to “thousands of dollars on Ticketmaster” for the game at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

Playoffs tickets are always going for top dollar, especially with these two rabid fan bases that travel well outside their home stadiums. Of course, Cowboys fans will be sure to fill their home turf, but there is surely going to be a mix of green and yellow among the crowd.

Alexander has been known to be a natural content creator when the camera is in his face — good and bad for the Packers. However, this is certainly a good one as he’s showing his enthusiasm for some playoff football.

Jordan Love and Jaire Alexander

Dallas secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC after defeating the Washington Commanders on Sunday, meaning they are guaranteed two home playoff games if they make it that far.

Meanwhile, the Packers have the No. 7 seed in the conference, the final wild card berth that will force them to play on the road throughout the postseason.

Nonetheless, the group, led by players like Alexander and quarterback Jordan Love, is confident they can upset their opponents and make somewhat of a Cinderella run, starting with the Cowboys.

Dak Prescott & Co. won’t be an easy task, as that offense has clicked in recent weeks to the point where they usurped the Philadelphia Eagles from the NFC East throne. Now, they’ll look to break the stigma of not being able to finish the job, as they haven’t been to the Super Bowl since 1995.

Saints running back Jamaal Williams scored a touchdown to make it 48-17 with about 1 minute to go in the game. Then-Falcons coach Arthur Smith yelled at Saints coach Dennis Allen during the postgame handshake. Winston said it was a “team decision” to get Williams a touchdown from the 1-yard line.

While Winston suggested the players went rogue on the play, which brought about criticism to the veteran quarterback, Graham defended the call and had a strong message for the Falcons.

“Get off (Jameis Winston’s) back,” Graham wrote on X. “This man is the best teammate I’ve ever had. Loves this city, this game and embodies everything you can ask for in a leader. Was a rare situation and we all take responsibility. Nobody thought it would get blown out of proportion.

“Also f— the Falcons.”

Winston said he apologized to Allen and took full responsibility for making the call. Williams led the NFL in rushing touchdowns last year but before Sunday’s game, he had yet to score.

“I apologized to D.A. because the play was ‘Victory.’ But I also explained to D.A. that it was a team decision. I think that when you have a team morale and I asked the guys, ‘What do you want to do?’ We know how much Jamaal means to this team. And I understood from D.A.’s perspective,” Winston said.

“But D.A. didn’t condone it at all. However, we decided as a team to do it. And man, we got an interception to the 1-yard line — if we woulda scored, would it still have been disrespectful?”

Winston added that he had “no regrets” over the call.

“They can do whatever they want. There are no rules against it,” Smith said. “We didn’t stop them the second half, and they can do whatever they want. It is what it is. Hats off to them. They kicked our you-know-what in the second half. That’s their prerogative. It’s also my prerogative to tell him how I feel. Credit to them. They can do whatever they want there.”

Falcons veteran Calais Campbell said he had no problem with going for the score but was more upset that they appeared to lineup in a victory formation.

“I wish they would have lined up in run formation,” he said. “Don’t look like you’re going to take a knee and then run then ball. … I was just frustrated with that because I just feel like there was a way to do it, if you’re gonna do it.”

Saquon Barkley ended his sixth season with the New York Giants in a very productive way, scoring two touchdowns in a win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Whether Barkley will be with the Giants for a seventh season is the big question — the same one that circled the No. 2 overall pick from 2018 this past offseason.

The Giants decided to franchise tag Barkley after negotiations for a long-term extension fell through. Barkley was quite transparent about the situation, saying he fully understood how the business of the NFL worked now that he had to deal with it firsthand along with other running backs that didn’t see extensions come their way in a market for the position.

As Barkley heads into the offseason, he knows the Giants can franchise tag him yet again if an extension isn’t met. But after experiencing what happened last offseason — Barkley and the Giants eventually agreed to a modified tag with extra incentives before training camp began — he said he’s “numb” to the situation if it arises again.

“I went through the whole process last year,” Barkley said. “We talked more than enough last year, to be honest. I’m gonna let my agents handle that.”

“They did it last year. So I’m numb to it. I don’t have any feelings toward that at all,” Barkley continued. “If you’re going to do it, just don’t wait until March 5. Just get it over with. If not, let me go. Simple.”

March 5 is the franchise tag deadline for all NFL teams, which the Giants fully utilized up to the hour after figuring out a long-term deal with quarterback Daniel Jones

General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were at the center of the discussions last offseason, and the former noted Monday that a conversation with Barkley will be had soon.

“That’s a tool we have at our disposal,” Schoen explained regarding the franchise tag. “I’m not saying we will or we won’t. A lot of those conversations will be had in the next month or so.”

Barkley reflected on what once again could’ve been his final year in New York.

“If it was my last game playing here — if it is — it was a fun six years,” he said after rushing for 46 yards and catching two passes for 51 yards in the 27-10 win over their NFC East rival on Sunday. “Made a lot of great memories, but it’s not like the last time I’m ever playing football. … If I knew that it was my last game, I probably would feel a little different, but like I said, I have no idea.”

Barkley finished Year 6 with 962 rushing yards on 247 carries with six rushing touchdowns, while hauling in 41 receptions for 280 yards with four receiving touchdowns.

If it is his final season in a Giants uniform, Barkley would have rushed for 5,211 yards, averaging 4.3 yards per carry with 35 touchdowns on the ground and 12 more through the air. He had 2,100 yards receiving on 288 receptions as well.
