Ex-NFL player’s accomplice in 1999 murder of pregnant girlfriend dead at 63

0

Van Brett Watkins, the man who spent about 20 years in jail for his role in former NFL player Rae Carruth’s plot to kill his pregnant girlfriend, has died, according to online prison records. He was 63.

Watkins was serving his time at Central Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina. He died at a hospital on Dec. 3 from natural causes, prison spokesperson Keith Acree said.

Watkins received more than 50 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to his role in Carruth’s efforts to kill Cherica Adams in 1999. He was the one who fired the shots that eventually killed Adams. He was sentenced for second-degree murder, conspiracy and other charges.

Adams was shot in her car as she drove away from a shopping center in December 1999. She died weeks later. Her son was born after an emergency Caesarean section.

Rob Gronkowski reveals his funniest plays and it includes his butt

0

Rob Gronkowski was on the New England Patriots when New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez committed the “butt fumble” in 2012. The former legendary tight end says a play featuring his own behind was one of the funniest plays of his career.

Gronkowski appeared on Barstool Sports’ podcast “Pardon My Take” and was asked about the funniest plays of his career. He pointed to two moments that made him chuckle, including a curious instance against the Baltimore Ravens in which a defender pulled his pants down trying to make a tackle.

“I got two for you,” Gronkowski told PFT Commenter. “One of them was versus the Steelers. I caught a first down pass up the seam and I was laying on the ground and I just decided to put my hand backward as a first down marker laying on the ground. It made me laugh when I saw it in the film room.

“And then another play was versus the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs. I caught another seam pass and the safety came and grabbed me and the way he grabbed me it pulled down my pants and my a– cheeks were hanging out and his face was like right against my a– cheeks and my actual a– was showing in the game.… His face was right against it, man. It’s great, man.”

US alarmed as China hacks critical systems: What you can do

0

China has made its way into critical American cyberinfrastructure without being detected for over a year. The known targets include the water utility in Hawaii, a port on the U.S. West Coast, and an oil and gas pipeline. The goal is for China to leverage a position over the United States to create chaos, cause panic, and disrupt logistics.

Hacker at work (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

The scope and impact of China’s Volt Typhoon cybercampaign

Hackers tied to China’s People’s Liberation Army have gained access to more than two dozen critical systems, according to a Washington Post report. The newly revealed information provides a more complete understanding of the Volt Typhoon cybercampaign, which was initially identified by the U.S. government around a year ago.

You may remember how a single ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline sharply ran up fuel prices and caused lines of cars to wait hours to refill at gas stations up and down the eastern seaboard. It was the moment that Americans got the first glimpse of the effect of a cyberattack and made it a central issue for the Department of Homeland Security.

China’s stepped-up cybercampaign is a significant change

The director of the DHS Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is reported as saying this is a significant change from Chinese cyberactivity from seven to 10 years ago which was focused primarily on political and economic espionage.

The goal of any threatening campaign like this is to establish a pre-positioned advantage able to trigger a cascading cyberattack that compromises American infrastructure. An attack on many of these systems would be able to disrupt or destroy control and cause chaos inside the United States.

In many parts of the U.S., core utilities are managed by private industry. Each company operates differently than another. Some are more resilient than others, and many remain vulnerable to stealthy attacks by Chinese hackers to infiltrate and gain control of systems without being detected.

One attempt to break into a power grid privately operated in Texas is now becoming known. Several electric utilities outside the U.S. have been compromised, according to the report.

Why target Hawaii?

Short answer: Taiwan. The island of Oahu is home to the Pacific Fleet. China’s ability to disrupt the U.S. military response to a potential conflict that would require deploying troops and equipment could weaken America’s timely activation of critical movement.

How Chinese hackers are getting access to U.S. critical systems

Often it comes down to the use of readily available malware and a lapse in security through human deception. Chinese hackers were able to blend in with common network traffic to evade detection in a technique security experts call “living off the land.”

How to protect against Chinese cyberattack

On a broad scale, the NSA, along with other government bodies, advises a widespread update of passwords and enhanced supervision of accounts with elevated network access privileges.

Additionally, they advocate for businesses to implement more robust multifactor authentication methods. Instead of SMS-based verification, which can be vulnerable to interception by foreign entities, the use of physical security keys or hardware tokens is recommended.

MORE: INSIDE THE SINISTER CYBER-RINGS HICKAJCKING FACEBOOK ACCOUNTS

For individual Americans to safeguard themselves against similar cybersecurity threats, it is crucial to:

1) Regularly update and strengthen passwords, avoiding common words and phrases, and using a mix of characters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

2) Enable multifactor authentication on all personal accounts, opting for app-based authenticators or physical security keys when available.

3) Stay vigilant against phishing attempts by not clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.

4) Keep all software, including antivirus and operating systems, up to date with the latest security patches. See my review of the Best antivirus protection here for options.

5) Be cautious about the amount of personal information shared online, as this can be used to facilitate targeted attacks.

By taking these steps, you can create multiple layers of defense against potential cyberintrusions.

Kurt’s key takeaways

The Volt Typhoon cybercampaign by China poses a serious threat to the national security and economic stability of the United States. By targeting critical infrastructure systems, such as water, power, and oil, China aims to gain a strategic advantage over the U.S. and potentially disrupt its military response in the event of a conflict over Taiwan.

The U.S. government and the private sector need to work together to beef up their cybersecurity defenses and resilience against such attacks. Also, you and I need to take proactive steps to protect our personal data and devices from malicious hackers. Cyberwarfare between the U.S. and China is not a hypothetical scenario, but a reality that requires urgent attention and action from all of us.

Riley Gaines rips Illinois woman for defending trans cyclists who topped event: ‘Traitor to women’

Riley Gaines slammed an Illinois woman who finished in third place behind two transgender competitors during a cycling race earlier this month after she came to their defenses amid criticism.

Tessa Johnson and Evelyn Williamson, who were both born male, beat out all the opposition at the Illinois State Cyclocross Championships. Johnson and Williamson both came under fire for taking spots from biological women as Kristin Chalmers was forced to third on the podium.

Chalmers told NBC News on Friday that “it would be ridiculous” to assert her life was “ruined” after finishing third and joined other cyclists in signing a letter in support of Johnson and Williamson.

Gaines, an OutKick contributor and host of OutKick’s “Gaines for Girls” podcast, said in a statement to Fox News Digital that Chalmers was a “traitor to women.”

“Why is it so often women applauding their own erasure? Chalmers may claim she’s fine losing to men, but female athletes like her don’t have the right to willingly surrender the integrity of competition for everyone,” Gaines said.

“The majority of female athletes believe women deserve respect and fair competition. She is a traitor to ethical and fair sport. And she’s a traitor to women.”

Chargers’ Justin Herbert fractured finger on throwing hand, may miss game vs Raiders: report

0

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has a fractured index finger on his throwing hand, which came during the team’s 24-7 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, head coach Brandon Staley told reporters.

But, while Herbert has played through a fractured finger on his non-throwing hand this season, he is expected to miss time because of the injury.

The Chargers have a short week, as they’re set to play “Thursday Night Football” against the Las Vegas Raiders. Herbert is not expected to play after consulting Dr. Steven Shin to determine the extent of the injury, ESPN reported Monday.

While Herbert’s availability after this week is unknown, only three days’ rest won’t cut it for a finger on the throwing hand.

In turn, his backup, Easton Stick, will likely be the starter.

Stick had to come in for Herbert following the hit from Broncos lineman Zach Allen in the second quarter. Herbert’s pass to Donald Parham Jr. was complete, but he was seen staring at his hand after the play.

Herbert would finish the series, and then head to the locker room. He was ruled out later on.

“I can’t remember whether it got hit on a helmet or whether it hit on someone’s shoulder pads, but I just remember coming up and it wasn’t feeling right,” he said.

“It’s obviously tough. You feel bad for hanging the team out like that. You never want to be taken out of the game… it is something that we’ll know more as the week goes on and if there’s any chance to play, I’ll do everything I can to be out there.”

While Herbert kept his right hand hidden, he noted wearing a splint on his finger, adding, “It doesn’t quite feel good.”

Herbert entered Sunday ready to play his 62nd consecutive game, which was the second-longest streak by a quarterback in the league. Only Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was ahead of him at 84.

This isn’t the way the Chargers wanted their season to go, sitting at 5-8 now with the AFC playoff picture continuing to see a very strong list of above-.500 squads.

Over 13 starts this season, Herbert is completing 65.1% of his passes for 3,132 yards with 20 touchdowns to seven interceptions. While solid numbers, the results haven’t shown in the record column, with the Chargers failing to put together consistent play on both sides of the ball this year.

How your AirTag can be shared with up to five other people

0

If you’re one of those people who constantly misplace their car keys or wallet, Apple’s latest iOS 17 update has some good news for you. Picture this: you’re rushing out the door, desperately searching for your car keys, and you’ve enlisted the help of everyone in the house. Well, thanks to Apple, that frantic treasure hunt might just become a thing of the past.

How your AirTag can be shared with up to 5 other people

Enhanced AirTag sharing experience

AirTag, Apple’s innovative tracking device, has been elevated with the ability to be shared with up to five people. Yes, you heard that right – you can now recruit your friends, family, or roommates in the search for your lost items. This feature transforms the way friends and family can collectively keep tabs on shared items like car keys, an umbrella, or a bike.

To share your AirTag you will need to follow these steps:

  • Open the ‘Find My’ app on your iPhone
  • Tap on Items at the bottom of the screen
  • Select the AirTag you wish to share
  • Click Add Person under the ‘Share This AirTag’ section

  • Scroll down and tap Continue
  • Choose up to five contacts to share the AirTag with by tapping on their contact information where it says To:
  • Then, hit the Share button
  • The 5 contacts must have an Apple ID and use the Find My app. If you try to add a contact that does not have an Apple ID and use the Find My App a window will pop up like the one below, saying the number may not be using Find My.

Pros and cons of sharing the AirTag with others

Consider the ease now for families tracking a set of house keys or groups managing shared equipment. This feature is a game-changer for everyday convenience and security. It’s not just about finding lost items; it’s about creating a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Advantages and considerations

While the update is a significant improvement, it’s also important that we bring up potential concerns. The AirTag sharing is exclusive to the Apple ecosystem, which could limit its applicability. Also, despite Apple’s strong focus on privacy and security, you should remain aware of the potential for misuse in tracking individuals without consent.

Pros

Enhanced tracking capabilities: Sharing AirTags allows multiple users to track a single item. This is particularly useful for items used by groups or families, like shared bags or equipment.

Convenience for travelers: For those who travel, AirTags offers a way to keep track of luggage, reducing the anxiety associated with lost or delayed bags.

Precision Finding feature: AirTag comes with a Precision Finding feature that guides users to their lost item with on-screen directions, which is especially useful for quickly locating items like keys or wallets.

MORE: DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN USE APPLE AIRTAG WITH YOUR ANDROID PHONE?

Cons

Compatibility limitations: AirTags are only compatible with Apple products, specifically iPhones running iOS 14.5 or later and iPads running iPadOS 14.5 or later. This limits their use to those within the Apple ecosystem.

Potential privacy concerns: While AirTags have several privacy protections in place, like Bluetooth technology and end-to-end encryption, there is still a risk of them being used to track someone without their knowledge or consent.

Additional costs: AirTags do not come with built-in key ring holes, requiring separate purchases of holders. This additional cost can add up, especially for those needing multiple AirTags.

How your AirTag can be shared with up to 5 other people

AirTag: A double-edged sword for tracking and privacy

While AirTags offer significant benefits for tracking and locating items, you should know about the limitations and potential privacy concerns associated with their use, including the potential misuse of AirTags for tracking individuals without their consent.

Over eight months, there were over a hundred police reports which included AirTags. Fifty of these cases involve women who suspected they were being stalked by a man in their life. One notable case even involved a Sports Illustrated model who claimed that someone planted an AirTag on her at a bar, which was then used to track her on her way home.

Apple has announced some new features and improvements for AirTags to address privacy and security concerns. These include:

  • Reducing the time it takes for an AirTag to alert someone that it is following them from three days to a random interval between eight and 24 hours.
  • Adding an Android app that will allow Android users to detect and disable nearby AirTags that are not paired with their own devices.
  • Updating the firmware of all AirTags to make them emit a sound when they are separated from their owner for a certain period of time, regardless of whether they are moved or not.

Apple said that these changes are part of its ongoing commitment to protect the privacy and safety of its customers and that it will continue to monitor and evaluate the performance of AirTags.

MORE:

Best alternatives to Apple AirTag

If you are not part of the Apple ecosystem and need other solutions to track your keys and or other items, there are several options available in the market. Some of the 6 best alternatives to Apple AirTags can be found here. Remember, whether you choose one of these alternatives or an AirTag, each has its unique features and limitations.

Kurt’s key takeaways

So, are you ready to bid farewell to the age-old ‘lost and found’ conundrum?” AirTag sharing in iOS 17 represents a significant milestone in the realm of personal and shared tracking technology. This feature not only enhances the practicality of AirTags but also reflects Apple’s ongoing dedication to innovation, user experience, and privacy.

Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed added, “Between this and his post-game comments, the way Patrick Mahomes is handling this seems pretty out of character for him.”

The 33rd Team’s Trey Wingo was critical before the video came out.

“Honestly the amount whining by the @Chiefs after the game is embarrassing,” Wingo wrote. “It also points out their frustration level on their constant mistakes. Quit killing yourselves ans (sic) you won’t need to blame the refs.”

“It’s tough to swallow,” he said. “Not only from me, and football in general, to take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that, you want to see the guys on the field decide the game. They’re human. They make mistakes. But every week, we’re talking about something.”

“It’s the call. Just in that moment. Not for myself. To have a flag change the outcome of the game. I’ve never had offensive offsides called. If it does, they warn you. There wasn’t a warning the entire game. And then you make a call like that in the final minute? Another game, we’re talking about the refs. It’s not what we want for the NFL. It’s not what we want for football.”
