Vikings’ Justin Jefferson hospitalized with chest injury after long-awaited return from hamstring injury

0

The long awaited return of Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson was short-lived on Sunday when the star wideout was briefly hospitalized with what head coach Kevin O’Connell called an “internal chest injury.”

Jefferson, who made his return against the Las Vegas Raiders after being sidelined with a hamstring injury since Week 4, took a hard hit from safety Marcus Epps while going up for a catch in the first half of the Vikings 3-0 victory.

“It was a tough day from that standpoint,” O’Connell told reporters of the injuries, adding that Jefferson sustained an “internal chest injury.”

“We wanted to rule out any potential complications from that, so he did go to a local hospital and get evaluated, and he has since returned, and he will travel home with us.”

O’Connell said he felt “encouraged” by the early evaluation, but they will have to see what this means for his availability in a short week with a game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday.

“I thought the doctors did a great job of doing what they should in the moment, which is making sure we avoid some potentially serious things,” O’Connell added. “From what I’ve been told, it looks like we avoided any significant thing there.”

Before exiting the game, Jefferson hauled in two catches for 27 yards, which moved him past Randy Moss for the most receiving yards by a Vikings player in his first four seasons (5,423 yards).

Sunday’s game was the first 3-0 finish since 2007. The only points on the board came from Greg Joseph’s 36-yard field goal with under two minutes remaining in the contest.

Joshua Dobbs was also benched halfway through the fourth quarter for backup Nick Mullens. He finished 9 of 13 for 83 yards.

A 16-year-old teenager has been arrested for allegedly planning to attack a synagogue in Vienna, Austria’s top security official said Monday.

The teenager, who was arrested Thursday, had announced in online chats that he intended to procure a weapon to attack an unspecified synagogue in Vienna, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said. He had already obtained the financial means for the attack, Austrian news agency APA reported.

Tennis star Novak Djokovic reiterates stance on vaccines: ‘I’m pro-freedom to choose’

0

Novak Djokovic is the number one tennis player in the world at 36 years old, tallying 24 Grand Slam titles over his illustrious career, which does not seem to be coming to an end anytime soon.

Through all the success though, Djokovic was cast as a villain in recent years for his decision not to get the COVID-19 vaccination.

Despite the backlash, he has remained steadfast in his belief that he does not have to get the vaccine. In September, Djokovic spoke with tennis great John McEnroe about his stance, though it was not the mindset people believed he had.

Djokovic said he was not “anti-vax,” but rather “pro-freedom to choose” whether a person wants to get the vaccine or not.

During a “60 Minutes” interview that aired on Sunday, Djokovic reiterated those comments.

“People tried to declare me as an anti-vax [person]. I’m not anti-vax, nor am I pro-vax. I’m pro-freedom to choose,” he said once more.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC SAYS HE WAS NEVER ‘ANTI-VAX’: ‘I WAS ALWAYS PRO-FREEDOM TO CHOOSE’

Controversy spread globally for Djokovic when the Serbian native wanted to defend his Australian Open title in 2022. However, despite being granted a medical exemption to enter Australia without the COVID-19 vaccination, Immigration Minster Alex Hawke revoked Djokovic’s visa.

“I was basically declared as a villain of the world,” Djokovic told “60 Minutes.” “I had, basically, most of the world against me. I had that kind of experience on the tennis court with crowds that were maybe not cheering me on. But I never had this particular experience before in my life.

“I got the exemption, I got the permission to come into the country. So, of course, it escalated to the highest of highest levels globally.”

Djokovic would launch a case to save his visa and his ability to compete in the Australian Open. Supporters of Australia’s decision to cancel his visa, as well as those believing Djokovic had the right to play, stood outside a courtroom where three judges made the decision to deport Djokovic.

He said at the time he was “extremely disappointed” with the decision, though he accepted the ruling and went on a flight to Dubai. This process lasted 10 days prior to the start of the tournament.

Djokovic told McEnroe in September he would forgo winning more Grand Slam titles if the vaccine is required to participate in the tournament.

Imagine driving on the road and then flying in the air with the same vehicle. Well, move over George Jetson, that’s now a reality thanks to aircraft maker Samson Sky’s invention of the world’s first flying car. Switchblade can transform from a three-wheeled roadster to a two-seater aircraft in minutes. Recently, it completed its first flight in Moses Lake, Washington, at the Grant Country International Airport.

What is Switchblade?

Switchblade is a three-wheeled street-legal vehicle that can transform into a flying car in less than three minutes. It has a retractable wing and tail that fold into the body when driving on the road. It can seat two people and has a luggage compartment that can fit two golf bags and/or two overnight bags.

How does Switchblade work?

Switchblade uses a 190-horsepower engine that powers the wheels on the ground and the propeller in the air. It is designed to reach speeds of up to 125 mph on the ground and 190 mph in the air and fly up to 13,000 feet above sea level. It has a range of 700 miles on the road and 450 miles in the air. It can take off and land on any paved runway that is at least 1,500 feet long.

How much does Switchblade cost?

Switchblade is not cheap. The estimated cost is $170,000 for the base model. A private pilot license is required to fly one, and having the Switchblade as your training vehicle can save half the cost of getting that license.

The company behind Switchblade, Samson Sky, says that it has received more than 2,300 reservations from customers in 57 countries – available in right or left-hand drive.

What are the benefits of Switchblade?

Switchblade offers a new way of transportation that combines the convenience of a car and the freedom of a plane. It can save time and money by avoiding traffic jams, tolls, and parking fees.

It can also access remote areas that are not reachable by conventional vehicles. Switchblade is designed to be safe, reliable, and easy to operate. It has a parachute system that can be deployed in case of emergency.

What makes the Switchblade unique to other flying cars

The Switchblade has a combination of three features that Samson Sky says no other flying car in history has ever had.

  • It is a true flying car. It drives and flies (unlike most eVTOLS – electric vertical take-off and landing air taxis) that don’t actually drive on the roads.
  • It offers high performance in both flying and driving modes
  • Practical for everyday use. The company tells us that the wings and tail are fully protected in driving mode.

Samson Sky also provides a unique hybrid electric propulsion system specifically for flying cars that sets up its ability to transition to full electric operations as soon as battery technology allows.

The company also says the Switchblade “uses unleaded automobile gasoline rather than leaded aviation fuel, and our carbon fiber materials that make up the bulk of the vehicle are non-toxic, almost 100% reduced waste, and fully recyclable, which current state-of-the-art is not.” Most of their clients, we’re told, say they are going to use this vehicle for a combination of business and pleasure.

Regulations and safety of a flying Car

The Switchblade is a flying car that follows the same regulations as any other aircraft. It has to maintain a minimum altitude of 1,000’ over urban areas and 500’ over rural areas. It is not allowed to fly too close or too low to the ground. For safety reasons, most aircraft fly at least 3,000’ above the ground.

The Switchblade is registered with the FAA and belongs to the Experimental Category. This category encourages innovation and accounts for about 20% of the small aircraft fleet in the US. In fact, more Experimental aircraft have been registered in the past five years than certified aircraft.

Kurt’s key takeaways

Switchblade is a groundbreaking innovation that could revolutionize the future of mobility. It is the first flying car that is ready for commercial use and has completed its first flight. It is a vehicle that can transform from a car to a plane in minutes, offering convenience, speed, and versatility. It is a remarkable achievement that could open up new possibilities for transportation and adventure. However, it remains to be seen whether Switchblade will become a mainstream mode of transportation or a niche product for the wealthy and adventurous.

Jets’ Quinnen Williams says he’s not ‘dirty player’ after hit led to Texans rookie CJ Stroud’s early exit

0

New York Jets All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams was just as elated as his teammates when they defeated the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon at home. However, he wanted to set the record straight about a certain hit in the contest.

Texans star rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud had to exit the game in the fourth quarter after a hit from Williams led to him smacking the back of his head on the turf at MetLife Stadium. Stroud was seen lying on the turf as trainers tended to him.

Stroud would later walk off the field with 6:30 left to play and never returned in the 30-6 loss for Houston. He was later ruled out and placed in concussion protocol.

Williams went on his X account to post about the hit, defending himself while sending prayers Stroud’s way.

“I pray CJ is ok, everyone know I’m not a dirty player or trying to hurt a great, Elite QB like him or any player in the league,” Williams tweeted. “I play hard and I play fair. Again I pray CJ is ok and wish him nothing but the best.”

Williams finished the game with two tackles, one of which went for his third sack of the season. It was his first since the 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills back in November.

The Jets’ defense, using the sloppy weather conditions in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to their advantage, hounded Stroud all day and made it hard for the Rookie of the Year frontrunner to facilitate his usual offense.

Stroud was held to just 91 passing yards by the Jets’ defense, and his early exit was just the exclamation point on a rough day for Houston.

The Texans moved to 7-6 with the loss, while the Jets are now 5-8.

Browns star Myles Garrett rips referees following Browns’ victory: ‘Honestly awful’

0

The Cleveland Browns got the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday afternoon at home, but one of their star players was not too pleased with one aspect of the game.

All-Pro edge rusher Myles Garrett had a problem with the officiating in the game and let his opinions loose during his post-game time with the media.

“The officiating was a travesty today,” Garrett told reporters. “…It was honestly awful. Respect to those, they have a hard job, but we have a hard job as well.”

There were some instances during the Cleveland-Jacksonville bout when referees may have gotten it wrong, especially on the Jaguars’ final touchdown drive.

Browns linebacker Anthony Walker was called for a defensive pass interference penalty that raised eyebrows on the Cleveland sideline.

Garrett may also have been frustrated with holds and hands-to-the-face situations which did not see the yellow laundry come out on the field throughout the game. Those specifically came when the man with 13 sacks this season was rushing Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

“I got a lot of respect for those guys, but we get scrutinized for the plays we don’t make, and someone has to hold them accountable for the calls they don’t make,” Garrett added. “They need to be under the same microscope as we are every single play.”

Comments like this are likely to get Garrett hit with a fine from the league office, as the NFL has been strict about public comments regarding referee performances during games.

Still, as Garrett said, players want officials to be held accountable just like they are during games. Given Garrett is playing on a five-year, $125 million extension, too, he might not mind being docked some cash to make his opinion heard.

Despite Deshaun Watson going down for the year, veteran Joe Flacco led the way for the Browns in a 31-27 victory over the Jags, throwing for 311 yards and three touchdowns.

On defense, Garrett came away with just one tackle and no sacks on the day, though Cleveland saw Maurice Hurst II, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and Za’Darius Smith each record a sack on Lawrence.

Bills’ Ed Oliver calls 9/11 remarks leaker ‘coward’ as team shows support for Sean McDermott

0

Buffalo Bills players and general manager Brandon Beane came to the defense of head coach Sean McDermott after he came under fire over a 9/11 analogy he made in a team meeting a few years ago and for playing Von Miller despite his domestic violence arrest.

After the team’s 20-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Bills posted a video from their locker room showing McDermott’s victory speech. The players were loud.

“We got your back,” some were heard saying.

Beane added, “We got this man’s back. Tough f—ing week. We got your f—ing back.”

The team meeting in question came from a report in Tyler Dunne’s Go Long Substack. McDermott used a head-scratching analogy during training camp. He was reportedly trying to illustrate how the team could come together following a season in which they had lost in the AFC Championship.

Dunne, citing several sources, relayed what was said in the training camp meeting.

“He told the entire team they needed to come together,” Dunne wrote of McDermott. “But then, sources on-hand say, he used a strange model: the terrorists on September 11, 2001. He cited the hijackers as a group of people who were all able to get on the same page to orchestrate attacks to perfection.

“One by one, McDermott started asking specific players in the room questions. ‘What tactics do you think they used to come together?’ A young player tried to methodically answer. ‘What do you think their biggest obstacle was?’ A veteran answered, ‘TSA,’ which mercifully lightened the mood.”

On Sunday night, Ed Oliver called the people who leaked the message in the meeting a “coward.”

“I think that’s a bunch of bulls—,’ he told reporters. “Whoever leaked it, I think you’re a coward. For one, everything supposed to stay in house. I got his back on everything. I know he’s a good guy. I know he’s a great guy, actually.”

FDA approves sickle cell disease treatment that uses ‘remarkable’ gene-editing technology

0

Modern medicine is one step closer to potentially curing sickle cell disease.

On the heels of the U.K.’s authorizing the world’s first gene-edited treatment for sickle cell disease on Nov. 16, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the same treatment on Dec. 8.

“CASGEVY’s approval by the FDA is momentous,” Reshma Kewalramani, M.D., chief executive officer and president of Vertex Pharmaceuticals in Boston, said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.

ALZHEIMER’S BLOOD TEST COULD HIT THE MARKET IN EARLY 2024, RESEARCHERS SAY

“It is the first CRISPR-based gene-editing therapy to be approved in the U.S.”

“These approvals represent an important medical advance with the use of innovative cell-based gene therapies to target potentially devastating diseases and improve public health,” said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, in the agency’s press release.

“Today’s actions follow rigorous evaluations of the scientific and clinical data needed to support approval,” he also said “reflecting the FDA’s commitment to facilitating [the] development of safe and effective treatments for conditions with severe impacts on human health.”

The CASEVY treatment — also known as exa-cel, or exagamglogene autotemcel — uses technology that “edits” the genes that cause sickle cell disease.

To develop the drug, Boston-based Vertex and CRISPR Therapeutics, which is based in Switzerland, used a gene-editing system known as CRISPR-Cas9 to turn genes on and off, according to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America website.

CRISPR stands for “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats,” which are repetitive sequences of DNA.

“The CRISPR technology [that is] being used with this treatment for sickle cell disease — a devastating inherited illness that profoundly affects survival and quality of life — is remarkable,” Dr. Mikkael Sekeres, chief of the division of hematology of Sylvester Cancer Center at the University of Miami, told Fox News Digital.

The treatment is approved for people 12 and older with severe sickle cell disease who get recurrent pain syndromes known as vaso-occlusive crises, in which blood flow is blocked due to sickle cells.

The FDA also approved Lyfgenia, the first cell-based gene therapy for the treatment of sickle cell disease in people 12 years of age and older, per the agency’s press release.

What to know about sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States, affecting an estimated 100,000 Americans, as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) noted on its website.

It disproportionately affects people of Black or African ancestry.

Sickle cell comparison

The difference in blood flow is shown between sickle cell disease and normal, healthy blood vessels. (iStock)

Red blood cells, which are produced in the bone marrow, contain a protein called hemoglobin that helps carry oxygen throughout the body.

The cells are normally a round shape, which allows them to easily travel through small blood vessels, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.

Patients with sickle cell disease inherit a gene mutation that produces abnormal hemoglobin, which makes it more difficult for the cells to move through the bloodstream, per the NIH.

SUICIDE AND GENETICS: STUDY IDENTIFIES 12 DNA VARIATIONS THAT COULD INCREASE THE RISK

The diseased cells eventually get stuck in blood vessels, which blocks blood flow — sometimes leading to painful episodes (known as sickle cell crises), infection, acute chest syndrome or stroke, per the CDC.

The cells begin to take on the shape of the C-shaped farm tool known as a sickle, which led to the disease’s name.

How the therapy works

While in utero, fetuses make a type of hemoglobin called fetal hemoglobin, which does not cause cells to sickle and has been shown to make sickle cell disease milder in those who have it.

After a baby is born, the BCL11A gene instructs the red blood cells to stop producing fetal hemoglobin. The gene is usually turned off within six months of birth, a Vertex spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Sickle cell disease

CASEVY works by targeting — and “turning off” — the BCL11A gene.

This enables continued production of fetal hemoglobin and significantly reduces the damage from sickle cells, according to Vertex.

Although the treatment may not “cure” sickle cell disease, as patients will still have the sickle cell mutation, it could potentially eliminate most of the signs and symptoms, even if a small subset of the patient’s red blood cells continue to sickle, the Vertex spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

KIDS’ SLEEP PROBLEMS COULD BE INHERITED, NEW RESEARCH SUGGESTS

To receive the treatment, patients will undergo a bone marrow transplant.

First, the patient will receive medication to help stem cells move from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. Next, the blood will be collected and the stem cells isolated.

The cells then will be shipped to a laboratory, where genetic technology will be used to edit their DNA.

Sickle cell awareness

Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States, affecting an estimated 100,000 Americans. (iStock)

The patient will then receive chemotherapy to destroy all potential stem cells, ideally, that could produce sickle cells in the future.

The edited cells then will be infused back into the patient under the monitoring of health care professionals, who will ensure that healthy cells are produced in the bone marrow.

The FDA recommends that patients be monitored for health issues for 15 years after treatment.

Potential limitations and cautions

More research is needed to determine the treatment’s long-term effectiveness, experts say.

It’s unclear whether the treated stem cells will continue to produce red blood cells that don’t sickle for the rest of the patient’s life, or if the cells will die off after a certain number of years, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America cautioned on its website.

Sickle cell example

The diseased cells begin to take on the shape of the C-shaped farm tool known as a sickle — which led to the disease’s name. (iStock)

As the patients also receive chemotherapy, potential adverse effects could include infertility, secondary cancer or infectious complications.

The cost of the therapy and eligibility restrictions may also limit who can receive it.

The treatment could cost millions of dollars per patient, according to recent reports.

“The million-dollar question is how people with the disease will be able to afford this life-altering treatment, and how the health care system can sustain such costs,” Sekeres told Fox News Digital.

What is compression therapy and how does it help certain medical conditions?

0

Compression therapy, in which pressure is applied to certain areas of the body, has been proven to help with specific medical issues and is relatively easy to use.

“Compression for lower extremities helps prevent or decrease swelling seen in the lower legs or when the legs are in a dependent position, sitting or standing,” Danielle Bajakian, M.D., a vascular surgeon at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York, told Fox News Digital.

Here’s a deeper dive and what to know.

What is compression therapy?

Compression therapy can be used to help improve blood flow and decrease perceived muscle soreness related to exercise and activity.

WHY YOU FEEL MORE ACHES AND PAINS IN THE COLD WEATHER — AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT

That’s according to Chicago-based Leo Arguelles, PT, DPT, a spokesperson with the American Physical Therapy Association.

Compression therapy can be used to help improve blood flow and decrease perceived muscle soreness related to exercise and activity. Compression garments and sleeves can help both on the legs and arms.  (iStock)

“It is most commonly used in the case of sleeves worn on the lower legs, but it can also be used for the upper extremities,” he said.

He said types may include:

  • Compression bandaging
  • Compression garments or sleeves
  • Taping
  • Total contact casting
  • Pneumatic compression devices (sleeves worn around legs that fill with air and squeeze)

Who can benefit from compression therapy?

Dr. Bajakian of Columbia University said patients who most commonly benefit from this are those with venous insufficiency or deep vein thrombosis.

Others who can benefit: pregnant women in their second and third trimester, when their blood volume increases; patients with lymphedema (a build-up of lymph fluid in the fatty tissues just under the skin); and patients with heart failure or other medical conditions that prevent venous return, resulting in leg edema.

Should people buy OTC compression clothing?

For most patients with mild symptoms, OTC compression clothing works well, Dr. Bajakian said.

“The keys to effective compression garments are compliance and fit,” she added.

Walking and exercising the legs, especially the calf muscles, can help with venous insufficiency as well, said one medical expert.  (iStock)

For a compression garment to work, the fit needs to be snug.

For socks, there are usually sizing guidelines for calf circumference and leg length from knee to ankle, she said.

“They should fit tightly around the ankle and looser as they get higher toward the knee,” Dr. Bajakian noted.

“Regarding compliance, over the counter brands offer an array of styles and fabrics that work with different lifestyles,” she also noted. “I often see better compliance with those than a medical grade compression garment.”

She clarified that for patients with severe symptoms or diagnoses such as lymphedema, medical-grade compression garments are essential.

When else can compression therapy be helpful?

Sunil Iyer, M.D., FACC, an interventional cardiologist and vascular medicine specialist with Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute in Wilmington, North Carolina, told Fox News Digital that for people who are on their feet for long periods of time — or who are going for long car rides or airplane rides — graduated compression stockings can help with the swelling and discomfort that may come from the blood pooling in the ankles.

“This can even help varicose veins not to form or not to be as engorged and painful,” Dr. Iyer said.

Compression stockings are part of the treatment, he said.

In addition, walking and exercising the legs, especially the calf muscles, can help with venous insufficiency as well, he said.

“Diet is also important. Patients may note that the swelling is worse after they drink a lot of fluids or eat a lot of salt,” he said.

Do people need to speak to a doctor before they buy compression socks?

For patients with minimal medical problems who are looking to improve vein health, there is no need to consult a physician prior to buying compression stockings, said Dr. Bajakian.

“However, patients who are at risk of blood clots or who have unexplained leg swelling should seek out a doctor for a workup,” she said.

Prescott and the Cowboys dumped 24 points on the Eagles defense in the first half. The star quarterback threw both of his touchdown passes in the first two quarters. The first was a 13-yarder to CeeDee Lamb and the second went to Michael Gallup with 20 seconds left in the second quarter.

Gallup hit the Michael Jordan “shrug” after beating the defense for the 1-yard score.

Prescott was 24-of-39 with 271 passing yards and two touchdown passes. It’s the sixth straight game he’s had at least two touchdown passes. Last week he had three against the Seattle Seahawks and four against the Washington Commanders.

Jake Ferguson led Dallas with five catches for 72 yards. Lamb had six catches for 71 yards and Gallup finished with six catches for 71 yards.

The Eagles only had six points on the board at halftime but the tide was nearly turning at the start of the third quarter when Jalen Carter returned a fumble for a touchdown. But that was the only touchdown they could muster.
