ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith recalls how he got started in sports journalism: ‘Figure it out’

0

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith has been in the sports journalism industry since he was a young man attending Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina.

Before Smith got to Bristol, Connecticut, and even before he was an NBA reporter in Philadelphia, his professor encouraged him to go down the path of being a sportswriter, which eventually brought him to the Winston-Salem Journal to meet the sports editor. He met with the editor, and after 5 minutes, he was hired as a clerk.

Smith recalled his backstory during an interview with OutKick’s Clay Travis. He said he started out getting $400 a week, “living off tuna fish and Kool-Aid,” working for the newspaper. He talked about having to cover the Wake Forest University soccer team for a feature.

“I said to the sports editor Terry Oberle I said, ‘I don’t know anything about soccer. The only soccer match I only watched was Pele in 1980. I don’t know anything about this.’ He said, ‘Tell me how that’s my problem. Figure it out,’” Smith said. “So, I went over there to Wake Forest University and the coach’s name was Walt Chyzowych. I’ll never forget him as long as I live. He’s passed away now, God rest his wonderful soul.

“And I walked up to him, this little Black kid from Hollis, Queens, New York City, I walked up to this guy and I said, ‘Sir, I’m Stephen A. Smith from the Winston-Salem Journal. I’m an aspiring sports writer. I have never covered soccer in my life. They’ve sent me on this assignment and if I don’t do it right, my chances of becoming a sports writer ain’t going to look too good. Can you help me?’”

STEPHEN A SMITH SAYS TRUMP HAS CHANCE TO START ‘CIVIL WAR’ IN UNITED STATES

Smith’s request worked. He said Chyzowych called the entire team over to him and said that Smith had full access to all the players for the rest of the week so he could get his story. He said the entire team spent the entire week teaching him.

He said the piece earned him a place as the beat writer for the Wake Forest soccer team, and that was how his career got started.

Columbus Crew wins second MLS Cup in four years, knocks off last year’s champion LAFC

0

The Columbus Crew only needed two goals to claim the 2023 MLS Cup in a thriller over 2022 champion LAFC Saturday.

The 2-1 win at Columbus’ home stadium gave the franchise its third MLS Cup.

Two of those titles have come in the last four seasons. Columbus advanced to the 2015 title game but lost to the Portland Timbers. The LA Galaxy’s five titles are still the most for an MLS franchise.

Saturday’s win capped the Crew’s impressive turnaround this season. After winning the 2020 MLS Cup, Columbus missed the playoffs the next two seasons. The franchise has since undergone significant changes, including the hiring of Wilfried Nancy as the team’s head coach.

Hernandez put Columbus up 1-0 on a penalty kick. He deposited the ball in the lower left corner for his fifth goal in six playoff matches this season.

LAFC defender Diego Palacios was whistled for a handball off his right arm at the top of the box, setting up the penalty.

From there, Yeboah dribbled to the goal box and slipped a shot past goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau.

Bouanga made it 2-1, scoring on his own rebound after Patrick Schulte made a save at the left post. Bouanga, who led the MLS with 20 goals, has 38 goals in 49 matches in all competitions this year.

LSU’s Jayden Daniels wins Heisman Trophy after wild season-long race

0

For the second time in four years, LSU has a Heisman Trophy winner.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Saturday night, beating out Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix and Marvin Harrison Jr.

Daniels received 503 first-place votes, and Penix received 292.

Daniels’ numbers are eye-popping. He threw for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions. On the ground, Daniels rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He led the Tigers to a 9-3 record despite a defense that allowed the second-most yards and third-most points per game in the SEC.

He is just the fourth player since 1986 to win the award with three losses in the regular season.

Daniels was actually behind in the Heisman odds in Vegas heading into championship weekend, but the favorite at the time, Nix, was unable to lead his Ducks to the Pac-12 title and into the College Football Playoff.

That left the door open for Daniels. At different points during the season, Penix and even Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy were favored to win.

JOE BURROW WINS 2019 HEISMAN TROPHY AS LSU HEADS INTO COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF

But Daniels separated himself from the pack down the stretch. In his final three games, he threw for 1,020 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Daniels is the first Tiger to win the Heisman Trophy since Joe Burrow did so in 2019. Burrow was the first overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft and the third of three straight Heisman winners selected No. 1 overall, joining Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.

Billy Cannon won the award in 1959, and in 2009, Doc Fenton was awarded the trophy for his 1908 season, when the National Football Foundation retroactively selected winners from 1889 to 1934. So, Daniels is the fourth LSU player to be named the Heisman winner.

It’s the 37th time a quarterback has won the trophy, the most of any position. Running back is second with 21.

Army stops Navy on goal line in final seconds for victory

0

Army linebacker Kalib Fortner scored on a fourth-quarter strip sack and then stuffed quarterback Tai Lavatai six inches from the goal line with 3 seconds left to help the Black Knights beat Navy 17-11 Saturday and win the 124th meeting of the nation’s oldest service academies.

After falling behind 17-3, Lavatai led the Midshipmen to one touchdown to make it a one-score game and then drove them to the Army 6. With no timeouts and about 30 seconds left, Lavatai threw two incomplete passes before hitting Alex Tecza, who was tackled in bounds at the 2.

With no timeouts — and no opportunity to spike the ball on fourth down — Navy scrambled to line up and managed to get the play off. Lavatai surged forward as his whole team pushed — ahead of him and behind — but Army held its ground.

The play was whistled dead, and the replay confirmed the ball never crossed the goal line. To kill the remaining 3 seconds, Army quarterback Bryson Daily took a shotgun snap, hesitated and stepped out of the end zone for an intentional safety.

Cadets began to storm the field before being sent back for another review to see if time had expired. The confirmation from the booth set off another wave of Army fans onto the field.

Bryson Daily ran for 84 yards and threw Army’s first touchdown pass against Navy since 2015 to help the Black Knights claim bragging rights for the second straight year and the sixth time in eight tries.

Kanye Udoh ran for 88 yards for Army, which also claimed the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy that goes to the team with the best record in head-to-head matchups against other service academies. The Black Knights upset then-No. 17 Air Force last month.

The matchup of patriots at the Patriots’ stadium brought an injection of pomp and excitement to Gillette Stadium, where the six-time Super Bowl champions have stumbled to a 3-10 record and failed to score in their last home game. New England is on pace for the worst season in Bill Belichick’s three decades as an NFL head coach, stripping some of the shine off the devoted Navy man who is in the discussion for the Greatest Of All Time.

Wearing gold uniforms that paid tribute to the Dogface Soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division, Army took a 10-0 lead against a Navy team that had zero pass completions at the half.

Lavatai, Navy’s backup quarterback, replaced started Xavier Arline in the second quarter, rushing for 74 yards and completing 16 of 26 passes for 176 yards. Lavatai drove Navy into field position early in the fourth to make it 10-3.

But with about five minutes left, Fortner punched the ball out, picked it up on one bounce and scampered 44 yards for a touchdown that gave Army a 17-3 lead.

ARMY-NAVY GAME HONORS VALUES THAT BIND US TOGETHER AS ONE NATION

Lavatai hit Jayden Umbarger from 14 yards out to make it 17-9 with under five minutes left; the two-point conversion failed. After an unsuccessful onside kick, Navy forced a punt and came within inches of a potential game-tying score.

For its 124th edition, America’s Game made its first trip to Massachusetts, where George Washington first took command of the Continental Army and the USS Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned naval warship.

Organizers squeezed in a weekend of activities at historic sites in the area, including a pep rally, a pull-up competition and debate at Faneuil Hall, a ceremony to mark the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party and a tug-of-war at the Old North Bridge in Concord, the location of “the shot heard ’round the world.”

Nearly 100 buses carried students from West Point and Annapolis to Foxborough, where they took the field in their dress grays and blues in a pregame “march-on of the Brigade of Midshipmen and Corps of Cadets.” Ultramarathon relay teams ran game balls from their campuses, and parachute teams dropped onto the 50 yard-line. New recruits were sworn in during a third-quarter timeout.

Representatives of the two academies gathered at midfield for the coin toss; the Army cadets taped onto their gray overcoats “EAT SQUID”; Navy countered with “NUKE ARMY.”

With the Patriots getting the weekend off after their Thursday night victory in Pittsburgh, Belichick participated in the pregame show, pulling on a Roger Staubach-era Navy helmet to give his prediction. Belichick, who grew up in Annapolis while his father worked as a Navy assistant coach for 34 years, spoke to the players Friday night.

Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin lays motionless after taking hit to head; helped off ice following scary scene

Ravens DB talks hardships of playing defense in offensive, flag-happy league

0

Officiating has been under the microscope for some time and has been getting heavy criticism across all sports.

Maybe it’s because replay technology makes officials mistakes so clear in hindsight.

At the very least, drawing penalties seems to have become a part of the NFL offensive playbook.

Baltimore Ravens defensive back Marcus Williams says his fellow secondary members can’t worry about what a ref is going to call.

“It is what it is. We don’t really worry about that. We just worry about playing our technique the right way because, at the end of the day, they’re gonna make whatever call they’re gonna make,” Williams told Outkick’s Dan Dakich.

“We can’t control that. All we can control is making a play on the ball and staying off the receiver.

JETS’ AARON RODGERS SAYS MEDIA LEAKS ARE A ‘PROBLEM WITH THE ORGANIZATION’ AFTER LATEST ZACH WILSON REPORT

“We take care of all the other flags and stuff that we can potentially get. But if you worry too much about the flag, then you might not make the play. So, if they call a flag, they call it, it is what it is. In the NFL, you never know what you’re gonna get.”

Williams says he’s surprised any time he’s flagged.

“Shoot, I’m going for the ball every time. So, if they throw a flag, I’ma be pretty mad because I know I’m going for the ball,” he joked. “So, if they throw a flag on me, I’m like, ‘What are you calling?’ Because we both went for the ball. It’s equal opportunity.”

Williams understands a tie goes to the offense, and the NFL has turned into an offensive league.

“But DBs can make highlight plays too. So, they at least gotta give us the opportunity to do that,” he added.

Steelers’ place TJ Watt in concussion protocol after star pass rusher reported symptoms

0

T.J. Watt, the 2021 NFL defensive player of the year, is in the midst of another strong season with 14 sacks through 13 games.

Watt’s sack total is second in the NFL, one behind league leader Khalil Mack’s 15.

Earlier this week, Watt reported concussion-like symptoms to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ medical staff.

The team placed the 29-year-old pass rusher in concussion protocol. Watt told team doctors about his symptoms Friday, one day after the New England Patriots upset the Steelers.

Alex Highsmith, who with Watt forms one of the most formidable pass rush tandems in the NFL, missed most of the loss to New England after entering the concussion protocol in the first quarter.

Pittsburgh’s linebacker corps has been ravaged by injuries this season. Inside linebackers Kwon Alexander and Cole Holcomb are already out for the year, and Elandon Roberts played against the Patriots despite a groin injury.

“Bill was an a– to me on something that had nothing to do with football, like after my career,” Scott recently told Barstool Sports.

‘Shark Tank’ investor Robert Herjavec pokes fun at Shohei Ohtani rumors after viral plane ride

0

A plane people thought Shohei Ohtani was on was actually occupied by a shark on “Shark Tank.”

Internet users found out a plane was headed from Anaheim, where Ohtani played his first six seasons, to Toronto Friday night after a report circulated Ohtani’s free agency decision was “imminent.”

Thousands of people hurried to track the flight, which was slated to land in the 4 p.m. hour Friday.

It was all just internet speculation until an MLB report said Ohtani was en route to Toronto.

However, both USA Today and the New York Post dismissed that report, saying Ohtani was home in southern California.

The CBC was on hand at Toronto’s Pearson Airport as the Ohtani rumors swirled, and when the plane landed, Ohtani was nowhere to be seen.

It was actually Canadian businessman Robert Herjavec of “Shark Tank” aboard the plane.

Herjavec instantly became the butt of a joke but played along with it.

MLB Network acknowledged Saturday morning its initial report was “inaccurate.”

The Blue Jays never signed Ohtani. He agreed to a 10-year, record-shattering $700 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Urban Meyer rips Ohio State’s Kyle McCord over decision to enter transfer portal

0

Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord made headlines this week when he decided to enter the winter transfer portal.

McCord was named the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback at the start of the season, beating out Devin Brown. The junior had 3,170 passing yards and 24 touchdown passes as Ohio State went 11-1 during the regular season. The team’s lone loss came against Michigan last month.

The Buckeyes are slated to play Missouri in the Cotton Bowl later this month. It remains unclear whether McCord will suit up for the game.

Unsurprisingly, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day was noncommittal when asked about McCord’s status.

Urban Meyer, who won a national championship during his head coaching stint at Ohio State, spoke to On3.com and touched on McCord’s surprising decision to test the waters via the transfer portal.

“That made no sense,” Meyer said. “I’m still trying to comprehend it. I tried to take a position of Kyle or even Ohio State, and it just doesn’t compute.”

WHAT WAS LEARNED FROM CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND: THE 12-TEAM PLAYOFF CANNOT COME FAST ENOUGH

Aside from trying to make sense of McCord’s logic, Meyers said that even if another football program offers the quarterback a position as a starter, it likely would not create a better situation than what Ohio State presented.

“I’m trying to make it compute because I want to be empathetic and I want to say, ‘OK, I understand.’ There’s no place better for Kyle than Ohio State. That place does not exist, unless he’s being guaranteed a starting spot,” Meyer said.

“But, once again, I don’t agree with that’s the best place. I think iron sharpens iron, steel sharpens steel. The best thing that anybody can ever do is go and compete your tail off, get better and maximize who you are as a player.”

Meyer insisted his comments were not made to rip McCord. He instead doubled-down on his belief that Columbus is the best place for the quarterback to play football.

“I’m not ripping Kyle at all, because I don’t know him. I admire him, and I think he was in a tough situation all year. But, yeah, I didn’t dig in too hard because I don’t want to. But it does not compute with me. I guess I love Ohio State, and I think competition brings out the best in you,” Meyer said.

“If he goes to a better place than Ohio State, I’ll be the first one to say he went to a better place. I just don’t know.”
