Vikings offensive coordinator arrested for DWI, still traveling with team for game against Raiders

0

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips was arrested Friday night on a misdemeanor driving while intoxicated charge.

Phillips was booked into the Hennepin County Jail at 11 p.m. CT after reportedly blowing a 0.08% after being pulled over by Minnesota State Police.

Despite the arrest, the Vikings said Phillips will travel with the team this weekend to Las Vegas for a game against the Raiders.

“Wes immediately notified the team following his arrest last night,” the team said in a statement. “This morning, we contacted the NFL, and after internal discussion, made the decision Wes will travel with the team to Las Vegas this afternoon. We will continue to gather information regarding the incident and have further comment at the appropriate time.”

Phillips is in his second season with the Vikings, having spent the previous three seasons as a tight ends coach and pass game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, winning a Super Bowl with them.

The 44-year-old’s first NFL job came in 2007 when he was a quality control coach and offensive assistant for the Dallas Cowboys. He then became their assistant offensive line coach in 2011 and then their tight ends coach in 2013.

Phillips held the latter role for Washington from 2014 to 2018 before heading to southern California.

Phillips is the son of longtime NFL coach Wade Phillips, whom Wes worked for while with Dallas.

‘Drake curse’ lives on after Shohei Ohtani-Blue Jays rumors never pan out

0

Toronto Blue Jays fans got maybe the worst false alarm of all-time, and Drake might have played a role in it.

Throughout Friday, there were rumors circulating that Shohei Ohtani was traveling to meet, and potentially sign with, the Canadian ball club.

A report from MLB Network on Friday said that Ohtani’s decision was “imminent,” and shortly afterward, it caught wind on the internet that there was a plane flying to Toronto that had taken off from Anaheim, where Ohtani had spent his previous six seasons.

MLB Network then reported that Ohtani was, in fact, on his way to Toronto, which got Blue Jays fans hyped.

One of those Blue Jays fans was rapper Drake, who took to his Instagram story to either convince Ohtani to sign with the Jays or celebrate him possibly already doing so.

The Toronto-based artist posted a photo to his Instagram story of him walking up a set of stairs in Ohtani’s 2023 All-Star Game jersey.

The rapper has often been the butt of jokes that he is a curse. Often after meeting athletes, their teams lose, notably the 2016 Golden State Warriors and Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2019 national championship. Most of the jokes have been put to rest since his hometown Toronto Raptors won the NBA Finals in 2019, but they’ll be back up and running after this.

That’s because Blue Jays fans were let down on Saturday afternoon, when Ohtani signed a record-shattering $700 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Drake also placed an $850,000 wager on Logan Paul to knock out Dillon Danis back in October, but Paul actually won by disqualification.

SHOHEI OHTANI AGREES TO RECORD-SHATTERING $700 MILLION DEAL WITH DODGERS

Thousands of people wound up searching for the viral flight online, patiently waiting for what they thought was Ohtani’s arrival in the 4 p.m. hour. However, it was actually Canadian businessman and “Shark Tank” investor Robert Herjavec and his family on the flight.

MLB Network called the reports that Ohtani was en route to Toronto “inaccurate” and regretted the “mistake.”

The 10-year pact for Ohtani is a record for North American sports by a wide margin. Patrick Mahomes’ $450 million was the previous record (although not all of it is guaranteed), and Ohtani shattered his former teammate Mike Trout’s then-MLB record of $426 million (all of that is).

Ohtani just won his second unanimous MVP in three seasons. (He would have won in 2022 also, had it not been for Aaron Judge’s record-breaking 62-homer season where he was in a Triple Crown race.)

At the plate, Ohtani led the majors in 2023 with a .654 slugging percentage and 1.066 OPS; his .412 on-base percentage was second; his 44 homers were fourth; and his .304 average was ranked ninth.

Ohtani was also brilliant on the mound, going 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 132 innings pitched. Among pitchers who threw 130.0 innings, his ERA was the ninth-lowest in MLB, and his K/9 was sixth. Among AL pitchers with that number of innings, he ranked fifth and third, respectively. His 10.0 WAR, by far, led the majors; Mookie Betts, who is now Ohtani’s teammate, ranked second with 8.3.

The modern-day Babe Ruth will continue his career in Los Angeles.

Shohei Ohtani, the two-time winner of the American League MVP, will sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency after spending the first six years of his career with the Los Angeles Angels, Ohtani announced in an Instagram post.

Ohtani’s agent announced the deal with the Dodgers is for $700 million over 10 years.

“This is a unique, historic contract for a unique, historic player,” Nex Balelo of CAA Sports said in a statement.

“Shohei is thrilled to be part of the Dodgers organization. He is excited to begin this partnership, and he structured his contract to reflect a true commitment from both sides to long-term success. Shohei and I want to thank all the organizations that reached out to us for their interest and respect, especially the wonderful people we got to know even better as this process unfolded. We know fans, media and the entire industry had a high degree of interest in this process, and we want to express our appreciation for their passion and their consideration as it played out.”

Ohtani is coming off his second MVP in 2023 as a two-way phenom.

In an announcement from Ohtani’s agent, Dr. Neal ElAttrache provided information on the surgery without saying that Ohtani underwent a second Tommy John procedure.

“The ultimate plan after deliberation with Shohei was to repair the issue at hand and to reinforce the healthy ligament in place while adding viable tissue for the longevity of the elbow,” ElAttrache said. “I expect full recovery, and he’ll be ready to hit without any restrictions come Opening Day of 2024 and do both (hit and pitch) come 2025.”

Bengals cleared of mishandling Joe Burrow’s injury status following investigation

0

The NFL has cleared the Cincinnati Bengals of any mishandling of Joe Burrow’s injury status after he suffered a season-ending torn ligament last month, an NFL spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Burrow was not listed on the team’s injury report going into the November 16 game against the Baltimore Ravens. The team posted a video on X, which appeared to show him with a soft cast on his right hand, but later deleted the post.

Burrow later explained that the cast was actually a compression sleeve, noting that it was not uncommon for players to wear them on flights due to potential swelling.

However, on Cincinnati’s touchdown drive in the second quarter, Burrow was seen in clear pain as he threw a touchdown pass to running back Joe Mixon. He was replaced on the next drive, and the next day, the team announced that he’d miss the rest of the season.

Burrow, though, called the ligament tear a “completely new injury.

“The league reviewed all medical records, studied practice video from the week preceding the club’s Week 10 game against the Houston Texans and the Week 11 game against Baltimore, interviewed relevant medical personnel and Burrow himself before arriving at its conclusion,” the NFL said in an email to Fox News Digital.

The league has taken injury reports more seriously in recent years, given the increase in fantasy sports and legalized gambling. The NFL reportedly warned teams in the spring meetings about reporting injuries properly.

The Bengals made Burrow the highest-paid player in NFL history with a massive five-year, $275 million deal when the season started in September, $219.5 million of it guaranteed.

Burrow missed most of training camp when he strained a calf. In 10 games prior to the wrist injury, he threw for 2,309 yards on 66.8% passing with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Cincinnati have split their two games without Burrow, losing to their AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers in their first full game without him, but upsetting the Jaguars in Jacksonville this past Monday night in overtime.

Since taking over, Jake Browning has completed 75.6% of his passes for 649 yards, three touchdowns, and a pick. Against the Jags, he went 32-for-37 for 354 yards.

Celtics’ Jaylen Brown calls out ‘overemotional ref’ following first career ejection

“To be honest I’m not sure,” Brown said when asked what led to the ejection. “But I wish I would have got my money’s worth. I always thought my first career ejection would be something a little more exciting. Maybe a tussle or something. Guys get folded up, go to the ground.

“Not some overemotional ref who had a bad day. [What] I’m most upset about is I should have gotten my f—— money’s worth.”

Crew Chief Mark Lindsay told a pool reporter that Brown earned the first tech due to the “use of profanity toward a game official.” The second technical was for a “wave off directed at the official, which under the respect of the game guidelines is considered an overt gesture and an unsportsmanlike act.”

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla told reporters after the game that he was doing everything he could to “not cost myself $25,000.”

“I’ve been on the sidelines for five years, and I’ve seen players act and say things that are way more disrespectful than that,” Mazzulla said.

Brown exited the game with 7:19 remaining, having scored 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field.

“I think there’s a difference between showing emotion and it being disrespectful or derogatory towards another person,” Brown said. “I don’t think I was directing it towards him whatsoever. Especially on the second one. It wasn’t even close. I’m on the bench. I’m talking from the sidelines. He can’t even hear anything I’m saying.

“So, he called a tech from across the court. That’s for sure. Have to deal with somebody having their emotions too involved in whatever else is going on.”

‘Never thought I would compete again’

Following a turbulent Olympic Games in 2021, gymnast Simone Biles stepped away from the sport she dominated for years.

She suffered a series of setbacks during qualifications during the COVID-19 delayed Tokyo Olympics. Biles later took to social media, where she wrote that she felt “the weight of the world on [her] shoulders,” at the time. She eventually withdrew from the competition.

But she returned to international competition this year. She picked up right where she left off, winning the gold medal in the women’s all-around final at the World Championships in October.

The iconic American athlete recently revealed that at one point she thought her gymnastics career was over.

“It honestly feels amazing to return to competition, I never thought I would compete again, so this is a blessing,” Biles told PEOPLE. “My favorite moment has been competing alongside my (World Champions Centre) WCC teammates.”

AMERICAN SIMONE BILES BECOMES MOST DECORATED GYMNAST OF ALL TIME: ‘IT WAS EMOTIONAL’

In 2016, Biles had one of the most impressive showings by an American athlete at an Olympic competition in history. She brought home four gold medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In the summer of 2021, Biles opened up her experience with “twisties” in Tokyo.

“It’s the craziest feeling ever. Not having an inch of control over your body,” Biles said on Instagram at the time. “What’s even scarier is since I have no idea where I am in the air, I also have NO idea how I am going to land. Or what I am going to land on. Head/hands/feet back…,” she wrote at the time.

Biles described the situation as “petrifying.”

“It’s honestly petrifying trying to do a skill but not having your mind & body in sync,” she continued, adding, “10/10 do not recommend.”

“The twisties” is a condition that many gymnasts have described as a loss of control of their bodies while they are making twists in the air. Typically, those who experience it will involuntarily create an additional twist that they otherwise would not have done.

In some instances, a gymnast could even stop midway through a routine without any prior warning.

“I’ve never been so nervous before in my life. [But,] I felt confident walking down the aisle. Seeing Jonathan at the altar was a dream. Our guests were cheering for everyone. I was shocked by the love in the air. The ceremony was so beautiful and dreamy!” Biles recalled to Vogue.

Pittsburgh boy, 10, needs second liver transplant to save his life: ‘Only possible through love’

0

A Pittsburgh boy with a rare liver disease is fighting for his life — and his family is hoping for a second miracle to save him.

Lucas Goeller, now 10, was born with a rare, life-threatening kidney disease called biliary atresia, which is a blockage that prevents bile from traveling from the liver to the gallbladder.

Eight years after he received his first transplant as a toddler, his transplanted organ is now failing again — and his life depends on receiving another donation.

ONE FAMILY DONATES FOUR KIDNEYS TO SAVE A NEW YORK MAN’S LIFE: ‘DEFIED ALL ODDS’

In 2015, when he was just a toddler, the child’s health declined rapidly.

He spent 18 months on the liver transplant list, getting sicker each week, and did not receive a single organ donation offer.

“He was on the brink of death, unable to walk or talk,” said his mother, Jessica Goeller, in an interview with Fox News Digital.

God told me to start a Facebook page for him, and at the time I really wasn’t into social media.”

That page led to a viral national campaign — complete with local news stories and donated billboards — that attracted the attention of a Nebraska family.

ARKANSAS MILITARY VETERAN RECEIVES WORLD’S FIRST WHOLE-EYE AND PARTIAL-FACE TRANSPLANT

And in July of that year, at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, little 2-year-old Lucas received the liver of 3-year-old Olivia Swedberg, who had passed away a day earlier of brain cancer.

“I’m in awe when someone can take their suffering and turn it into something beautiful by donating and giving someone a second chance,” said Goeller.

After that first transplant, her young son made a “miraculous recovery,” Goeller said.

For “eight beautiful years,” Goeller said, Lucas experienced a normal life as a happy, healthy boy.

“He was able to do things that he never could do before,” she said. “He went from watching out of windows to being an active participant in life.”

“I’m in awe when someone can take their suffering and turn it into something beautiful by donating and giving someone a second chance.”

But all of that changed this year, when his routine medical scans and blood work indicated that his liver had begun to fail.

“His failing liver is affecting his lung function and his ammonia levels,” Goeller told Fox News Digital.

“That would be drastic for anyone, but for a child who’s growing and cognitively developing, it is devastating to [his] development.”

Dr. George Mazeriegos, chief of pediatric transplantation at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, said Lucas is experiencing some of the more subtle changes of liver failure.

PIG HEART RECIPIENT’S ‘LAST WISH’ WAS TO HELP DOCTORS LEARN FROM PROCEDURE, DYING MAN SAID: ‘WE WILL MISS HIM’

“Those include not being able to grow normally and not getting the proper levels of oxygen to his body and brain, because the blood is being shunted away from the liver,” he told Fox News Digital.

“Those are important and potentially life-threatening complications.”

As of now, Lucas is still at home and “managing his symptoms,” Mazeriegos said, but the doctor emphasized the importance of his receiving a timely transplant before further complications occur.

The Goellers are now seeking support again, launching the “Save Lucas” campaign across social media.

And the city of Pittsburgh has rallied once more behind the family, with newly donated billboards and media campaigns.

“We’re trying to not only save Lucas, but also to build organ donation awareness for both deceased and living donors,” said Goeller.

ULTIMATE FATHER’S DAY GIFT: SON DONATES KIDNEY TO SAVE HIS DAD’S LIFE

“We want it to really sink into hearts around the world because it’s so important.”

Despite his challenges, young Lucas Goeller remains positive, active and upbeat, continuing to enjoy his love of the outdoors and hunting with his father and his three brothers, aged 12, 8, and 4.

Mom Jessica Goeller hopes “this campaign will inspire others to keep the conversation going and keep talking about Lucas and about other children and adults who need transplants,” she told Fox News Digital.  (Holly Lefever)

“He’s always filled with so much joy,” his mother said. “We get our strength from him. He encourages all of us to continue to look at the positives in life.”

The ideal living donor for Lucas is someone with type O blood, aged 20 to 49, with a BMI below 30.

Challenges facing pediatric transplants

Beyond seeking a liver for their son, the Goellers are looking to raise awareness about the critical need for donors to help the more than 100,000 individuals on the organ donor list.

Children on transplant lists in the U.S. face three key challenges, Mazeriegos said.

TINA TURNER SUFFERED FROM KIDNEY DISEASE BEFORE HER DEATH: ‘I HAVE PUT MYSELF IN GREAT DANGER’

“First, there is a great demand for life-saving transplants, and there are 10 times the number of adults on the liver transplant list as there are children,” he told Fox News Digital.

“This creates a challenge to allocate the right or the best organ for the children who are waiting on the list.”

Flyer

The family has launched a second “Save Lucas” campaign in an effort to save their son’s life. (Jessica Goeller)

While Mazeriegos noted that the allocation policy is slowly improving, it’s still imperfect and doesn’t always prioritize children appropriately.

Each year, dozens of children in the U.S. die while awaiting a new liver.

Mazeriegos is determined to eliminate this “wait list mortality” through the use of partial liver transplants. That’s when either a living or deceased donor’s liver is donated to two different recipients.

“Saving lives is not about competition — it’s about collaboration.”

Another challenge is that not all the centers in the country have the capacity to perform highly complex transplants like the one Lucas needs.

“We need to train centers across the country on the techniques that will allow them to transplant these children,” Mazeriegos said.

Lucas Goeller

“He’s always filled with so much joy,” said Jessica Goeller of her son. “We get our strength from him. He encourages all of us to continue to look at the positives in life.” (Jessica Goeller)

Both the Goeller family and the UPMC doctors stressed the importance of raising organ donor awareness so that more families register as organ donors.

Mazeriegos noted that people need to be made aware of living donation, which is when donors give part of their liver to a recipient.

In 2018, UPMC started a learning network, the Starzl Network for Excellence in Pediatric Transplantation, in honor of Dr. Thomas Starzl, who is recognized as the father of transplantation.

“This is an effort to level the playing field and extend the expertise to centers that want to provide the same level of care their patients deserve.”

Goeller brothers

In Pennsylvania alone, 18 children are waiting for liver transplants, while 300 children are on the list nationwide, Goeller pointed out.

“Life-saving donation is only possible through somebody else’s love,” she said.

She said she hopes “this campaign will inspire others to keep the conversation going and keep talking about Lucas and about other children and adults who need transplants.”

She added, “Saving lives is not about competition — it’s about collaboration. It’s going to take more than a village to get this message across the entire world.”

Eagles’ head of security barred from sidelines for Cowboys game after 49ers altercation: report

0

The Philadelphia Eagles won’t have their head of security on the sidelines for their Sunday night matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Dom DiSandro, known as “Big Dom” to many in the Philly community, will be allowed to travel to Dallas with the team but will not be on the sidelines against Philadelphia’s NFC East rival, according to ESPN.

DiSandro’s absence from the sidelines stems from his altercation with San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw in Week 13.

DiSandro stepped in front of Greenlaw after the 49ers star linebacker suplexed DeVonta Smith out of bounds and was flagged for unnecessary roughness during the third quarter of San Francisco’s 42-19 win.

DiSandro got between Greenlaw and Smith before the 49ers linebacker appeared to make contact with DiSandro’s face.

Both Greenlaw and DiSandro were ejected from the game.

The NFL is reviewing additional material to see if further discipline is warranted, according to ESPN.

A few days after the altercation, Greenlaw told reporters that he and DiSandro had apologized to each other through intermediaries.

“We just exchanged a formal apology just between me and [Niners general manager John Lynch] and some of the same people that we do know that in the building and stuff like that,” Greenlaw said, per ESPN. “He seemed like a genuine guy. Seemed like a guy that everybody loved in the building. So, I hate that, honestly. I really hate that it even escalated and went to that.”

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said he had no hard feelings toward DiSandro.

“I definitely don’t have any hard feelings towards Dom or anything like that,” he told reporters on Monday, via CBS Sports. “I don’t want anyone to go too hard on him. I think he just got caught in a weird situation and an emotional situation. So, no hard feelings towards him. I know a lot of people who know him and speak very highly of him. I just couldn’t believe we lost our player because of it.”

The Cowboys and Eagles kick off Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. ET.
