Lakers barred from wearing alternate uniforms for In-Season Tournament game due to potential clash with court

0

The Los Angeles Lakers have enjoyed a successful run with their black “city edition” jerseys this year, but it appears their time wearing the uniforms is coming to an end, at least for the semifinal round of the In-Season Tournament.

The Lakers are 4-0 this season in the black uniforms.

The team sported the jerseys earlier this week during a three-point win over the Suns to advance to the next round of the tournament. Los Angeles takes on the New Orleans Pelicans Thursday night in Las Vegas.

According to a report from ESPN, the NBA cited concerns over the alternate uniform’s potential “visual contrast between the jerseys and the design of the specialized in-season court.”

The uniform schedule posted to the Lakers’ official website showed the team now plans to wear the gold “icon jerseys” for the highly anticipated matchup with the Pelicans.

New Orleans will wear its white uniforms.

LEBRON JAMES REITERATES DESIRE TO OWN NBA FRANCHISE IN LAS VEGAS: ‘HOPEFULLY I CAN BRING MY FRANCHISE HERE’

On Wednesday, Lakers superstar LeBron James heaped praise on NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for his role in launching the league’s first In-Season Tournament.

“Adam Silver is a genius. It’s that simple. This is gonna work,” James told ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.

At least one member of the Lakers reportedly expressed displeasure shortly after learning the “city edition” uniforms would be nixed for Thursday’s game.

Lakers forward Rui Hachimura wore a black face mask to protect himself following a recent nasal fracture during Tuesday’s win. James, a four-time NBA champion, was spotted wearing an all-black outfit before the game against the Suns.

Over the past few years, the Lakers have racked up a number of wins when they wear alternate jerseys. Los Angeles won the NBA title inside the league’s bubble in 2020, going 4-1 in “Black Mamba” uniforms.

Shortly before the start of the regular season, James cited one of NFL legend and Colorado football coach Deion Sanders’ fashion-related mantras.

“He’s got the old saying of, ‘When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you play good. And when you play good, they pay good,'” James told ESPN in October. “I mean, I feel like that’s instilled in me since I was a kid.”

Yankees could bring in more stars if they dropped ‘wack’ facial-hair policy, World Series champ says

The New York Yankees are the most famous sports team on the planet with plenty of tradition, although one tradition may be a bit outdated.

The Bronx Bombers remain the only team to exclude player names on jerseys, and aside from MLB-sanctioned initiatives, the Yanks are one of two teams who have never worn alternate third jerseys.

But one other policy on the books since George Steinbrenner bought the team in 1973 prohibits players from having facial hair below the upper lip.

The rule is now over 50 years old, and one former Yankee says it’s time to nix it.

Cameron Maybin spent just one season in pinstripes, but he was clean-shaven for all those games.

Maybin says it’s time for the rule to go.

“This might be an unpopular take to Yankees fans, but you’d be surprised how much more attractive the Yankees would be if they got rid of that facial hair rule,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“You wouldn’t believe how many quality players just think it’s a wack rule to have. I mean cmon we’re coming up on 2024 let that go already, and I swear it would be more appealing. Again this only comes from conversations I’ve had and experience from actually Playing.”

The policy led to a makeover for Johnny Damon in 2005, and general manager Brian Cashman ruled out closer Brian Wilson over a decade ago because he said Wilson refused to shave his patented beard.

The Yankees’ new outfielder, Juan Soto, has been clean-shaven throughout his career, so there were no issues there. But it also is not uncommon to see current Yankees grow beards in the offseason or even as soon as they leave the Yankees for another team.

Plenty of Yankees players have grown mustaches, including Yankee legends Goose Gossage, Don Mattingly and Thurman Munson, because the policy does not prohibit them.

Hive Digital says BTC miners bought last Dec have already paid themselves off

0

Bitcoin (BTC) miner Hive Digital Technologies says the move to acquire a fleet of Bitmain mining rigs last year has already paid for itself, due in large part to a significant increase in the price of Bitcoin.

In a Dec. 8 statement, Hive Digital wrote that it had been acquiring mining rigs since the collapse of FTX, a decision it believes will put it in a favorable position for the upcoming Bitcoin halving, currently slated for April 2024.

Hive purchased a total of 3,750 Bitmain S19J rigs on Dec. 22, 2022, with President and COO Aydin Kilic saying the team had also updated its software stack to accommodate the new rigs.

S19J mining rigs were the top-of-the-line ASIC rigs in 2022, but have since been succeeded by the S19Ks, which boast a lower energy consumption rating than their predecessors.

“Since the collapse of FTX in November 2022, which marked Bitcoin heading into a year-long bear market, HIVE has used the opportunity to acquire new generation ASICs at attractive $/TH prices.”

Overall, since the collapse of FTX,  Hive Digital has purchased 29,000 ASICs, with two separate acquisitions of 9,800 Bitmain S19k Pro mining rigs announced on Nov. 14 and Dec. 4 this year.

“The approximately 29,000 ASICs were purchased at an average price of approximately $13.70/TH,” wrote Hive Digital, describing the acquisition price as attractive considering the rigs have an average output of 26 J/TH.

Hive Digital said the recent acquisitions of mining rigs have seen its global fleet efficiency rise to a rate of 28.9 J/TH with an expected operating hash rate of 4.8 EH/s by the end of December 2023.

Additionally, Hive reported that it had produced 276.3 Bitcoin in November 2023 from ASICs and GPUs, representing an average of 66.7 Bitcoins per Exahash.

Since Jan. 1 this year, Bitcoin has grown more than 160%, resulting in a boon for miners, many of which struggled through a particularly difficult crypto winter spanning from the end of 2021 and running through all of 2022.

Bitcoin is currently changing hands for $43,400, up 9.8% in the last seven days, per Cointelegraph price data.
