Mary Lou Retton’s daughter offers positive update on her mom: ‘Her path to recovery is steadily progressing’

0

Mary Lou Retton, who captured the attention of the nation when she won the all-around women’s gymnastics competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics, has been “fighting for her life” in a hospital, according to her daughter.

However, McKenna Kelley, Retton’s daughter, offered an encouraging update on Saturday saying her mother’s health is improving.

“Mom’s progress is truly remarkable. Prayers have been felt and are being answered,” Kelley wrote in an Instagram post along with a praying hands emoji. “Although she remains in ICU her path to recovery is steadily progressing. Her fighting spirit is truly shining!”

On Tuesday, Kelley revealed that her mother has been in an ICU “over a week” with a “very rare form” of pneumonia. Since then, financial support has poured in as Retton “continues to fight.”

The Spotfund page also noted that Retton does not have health insurance.

“GET WELL MARY LOU!! You are America’s Sweet Heart and we are all rooting for you!” one donor wrote on the fundraising page.

Retton is receiving treatment at a Texas hospital, according to The Associated Press.

Kelley also mentioned that Retton is becoming less dependent on machines.

“Her breathing is becoming stronger, and her reliance on machines is diminishing. Though it’s a lengthy journey, witnessing these improvements is incredibly heartening! She’s beginning to respond to treatments,” Kelley noted on Saturday in a social media post.

Retton’s win at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles marked the first time an American woman won the all-around gold medal or any individual Olympic medal in gymnastics.

She appeared in several films and television shows in the 1980s and 1990s and was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.

After she retired from gymnastics, Retton became a motivational speaker and frequently shared messages about the benefits of proper nutrition and exercise. She also served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under former President George W. Bush.

Ravens’ Mark Andrews praises Travis Kelce amid Taylor Swift rumors: ‘Raising the bar for a long time’

Baltimore Ravens star Mark Andrews has nothing but praise for his friend at tight end as he strides quickly to the national spotlight.

Kelce and Taylor Swift dating rumors continue to swirl. The pop star appeared at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night and watched the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs won the game 19-8, making it 3-0 when Swift has been in attendance.

“That’s an exciting thing,” Andrews told the Baltimore Sun on Friday. “He’s been raising the bar for a long time.”

Andrews’ remarks seem to echo that of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. The six-time Super Bowl champion leader reacted to the rumors after Swift first appeared at a Chiefs game last month.

“Well, I would say that Travis Kelce has had a lot of big catches in his career. This would be the biggest,” Belichick said on WEEI Radio at the time.

Nothing is officially official between Kelce and Swift. It doesn’t appear they will be updating their Facebook statuses any time soon.

However, Swift was seen again in the suite talking with Donna Kelce, hugging Brittany Mahomes and cheering on the tight end every time he made a catch. And he performed in front of her, too.

Travis Kelce finished Thursday’s game with nine catches on nine targets for 124 yards. It was the first time this season he’s surpassed 100 yards receiving.

The iPhone 15’s hot mess

0

Are you one of the people who recently snagged the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone Pro Max and are now feeling the heat? You’re not alone.  Some new owners are still reporting that their iPhone 15 Pro devices overheat after the release of Apple’s fix in iOS 17.0.3.  Apple originally said it was unrelated to the titanium frame that is supposed to dissipate heat better. So, what is causing this problem, and how can you fix it?

The issue with the iPhone 15 Pro line overheating

The issue is not just a hardware problem but also a software bug in iOS 17. Apple has acknowledged the problem of the iPhone 15 running warmer than expected and it rolled out a solution in iOS 17.0.3, which was supposed to resolve the overheating issue, but reports continue to come in from new iPhone Pro 15 owners.

One user reports that after updating with Apple’s overheating fix, his iPhone 15 Pro Max is getting hot on the sides near the side buttons and on the lens area, especially when making longer phone calls and taking several pictures in a row.

Another iPhone 15 Pro Max user says that listening to music with AirPods on causes his phone to get very hot.

Reports are difficult to verify in social media, but the volume of them leads me to believe there are still some unresolved overheating issues with the new pro versions of iPhone 15.

How iOS devices normally protect themselves from overheating

According to Apple Support, iOS devices have built-in protections to prevent them from getting too hot. They can sense when the temperature inside exceeds the normal operating range. Then, it will attempt to regulate its temperature by reducing or stopping some features or activities, such as charging, display brightness, cellular radios, camera flash, and performance.

It will also display a temperature warning on the screen and turn off the display if you are using navigation features.

It will resume normal operation when the temperature drops within the safe range.

Some report improvement after iOS update, while others still struggle

Some owners have confirmed that their iPhone 15 Pro devices run cooler after updating to iOS version 17.0.3. Others still report overheating when using the camera, playing games, keeping their phone in their pocket, or making phone calls.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see another update from Apple very soon.

In the meantime, check to make sure you have the latest iPhone iOS software, regardless of which iPhone you own.

How to prevent your phone from overheating

While Apple is attempting to do its part to correct the overheating problem with the iPhone 15 Pro, there are some things you can do to help keep your iPhone from overheating.

  • Close out your apps: If you have a lot of apps open, close out of them fully by swiping upward from the bottom of the screen and pausing in the middle of the screen. Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close. Then, swipe up on the app’s preview to close the app. This will help reduce the workload on your phone.
  • Turn off unnecessary features: Turn off features such as background app refresh and location services when not in use.
  • Check your connection: Try connecting to a stronger WiFi network if you’re using a cellular connection. You can check your modem or router if you believe you’re having a poor connection at home, or call your internet provider.
  • Charge your phone: Before using a high-resource app, plug your phone in, and don’t use it until it has charged fully.  Also, avoid charging your phone in direct sunlight, and do not overcharge your iPhone. Limit charging time to prevent overheating.
  • Update your software: Keep your iPhone updated to the latest version of iOS to ensure optimal performance.

The iPhone 15 Pro models are some of the most advanced smartphones on the market, with features like a 120Hz ProMotion display, a triple-camera system with 3x optical zoom, and a MagSafe charging port. It also has a sleek design with a titanium frame that is more durable and resistant to scratches than aluminum or stainless steel.

However, no device is perfect, and glitches can happen. The overheating issue is one of them, but luckily, Apple is actively working to resolve issues with software updates. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro, make sure you update it to iOS 17.0.3 or later, and be on the lookout for possibly more updates in the future.

Ethereum losing streak vs. Bitcoin hits 15 months — Can ETH price reverse course?

0

The price of Ethereum’s native token, Ether (ETH), is trading around a 15-month low versus Bitcoin (BTC), and the lowest since Ethereum switched to proof-of-stake (PoS).

Will it continue to weaken for the remainder of 2023? Let’s take a closer look at the charts.

Ethereum price breaks below critical support vs. Bitcoin

The ETH/BTC pair dropped to as low as 0.056 BTC earlier this week. In doing so, the pair broke below its 200-week exponential moving average (200-week EMA; the blue wave) near 0.058 BTC, raising downside risks further into 2023.

The 200-week EMA has historically served as a reliable support level for ETH/BTC bulls. For instance, the pair rebounded 75% three months after testing the wave support in July 2022. Conversely, it dropped over 25% after losing the same support in October 2020.

ETH/BTC stares at similar selloff risks in 2023 after losing its 200-week EMA as support. In this case, the next downside target looks to be around its 0.5 Fib line near 0.051 BTC in 2023, down about 9.5% from current price levels.

Conversely, ETH price may rebound toward its 50-week EMA (the red wave) near 0.065 BTC if it reclaims the 200-week EMA as support.

Bitcoin bull case overshadows Ethereum

Ethereum’s persistent weakness versus Bitcoin is reflected in institutional capital flow data.

For instance, as of Oct. 6, Bitcoin-specific investment funds had attracted $246 million year-to-date (YTD), according to CoinShares. On the other hand, Ethereum funds have lost capital, witnessing outflows worth $104 million in the same period.

The discrepancy is likely due to growing buzz about a potential spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETF) approval in the U.S.

Trade pundits argue that a spot Bitcoin ETF launch will attract $600 billion. In addition, Bitcoin’s fourth halving on April 24, 2024, is also acting as a tailwind versus the altcoin market.

The halving will reduce the Bitcoin miners’ block reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, a bullish case based on historical precedent that cuts new supply in half.
